Paid leave for workers facing domestic or sexual violence Up to five days of paid leave will be available for employees impacted by domestic or sexual violence, or parents of a child or dependent impacted by this kind of violence, thanks to new legislation.

Rally to Mark Sexual Exploitation Awareness Week

n Tuesday March 10th, the Abbotsford Community Action Team (ACAT) will host their annual public rally against the sexual exploitation of children and youth.

“The rally is an opportunity to raise continued awareness that exploitation of youth is happening right here in our community, said Wanda Phillips, a youth services team lead at Archway Community Services and ACAT member.

“Our hope with the rally is to increase understanding and promote community mobilization to address the issue.”

March 9 – 15th is provincially recognized as the Stop the Exploitation of Children and Youth Awareness week.

Now in its 22nd year, the awareness week recognizes the importance of supporting communities to develop prevention, education, enforcement, and intervention strategies to address the sexual exploitation of children and youth.

Sexual exploitation is the exchange of a sexual act for money, drugs, food, shelter, transportation, love, acceptance or any other consideration.

According to a report by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General, “victims of sexual exploitation include children and youth of different ages, genders, abilities, sexual orientations, and cultural and economic backgrounds in both rural and urban areas.” The report also shares that the average age when youth are first exploited is 13 to 15 years old.

Community members can also show their support by wearing fuchsia ribbons. Ribbons are available at the front desk of Archway at 2420 Montrose Avenue while supplies last. The colour fuchsia was chosen because it is a combination of red – representing red-light districts – and purple, which is the provincial colour for violence prevention.

Anyone who suspects someone is being sexually exploited is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police. The Archway Youth Resource Centre can also provide support and resources.

At about 1:00 AM on 19 July, 125 Vancouver policemen and 35 special police of the immigration department service in a large tugboat, Sea Lion attempted to board the ship “to tame

The Canadian government finally agreed to provide rations and fuel for the return journey. It also agreed to consider reimbursing the Shore Committee for its $25,000 worth of expenses which was never repaid.

With the guns of a cruiser, the HMCS Rainbow pointed at it, the Komagata Maru sailed out of Vancouver harbour at 5:10 AM on 23 July, 1914 with 352 passengers on board. Hundreds of Vancouver residents, who stood on the docks, cheered when the ship steamed away.

Gurdit Singh and the Komagata Maru’s passengers felt greatly humiliated by the hostile reception of the Canadian government and indifferent attitude of the British Raj towards their plight. Yet, Gurdit Singh still had “a ray of hope” that, once back in India, the British Government would redress their grievances when the “real facts are [laid]” before it. The next chapter proves how terribly and tragically wrong was Gurdit Singh in his estimation of the British Government of India’s sense of fair play and justice.

Champion, Coach, President: Gurjot Singh Kooner

orn and raised on a berry farm in Abbotsford, Gurjot Singh Kooner is a first-generation Canadian wrestler who was inspired to join the sport to live his father’s dream. Currently serving as head wrestling coach at the University of Fraser Valley and assistant coach at Miri Piri Wrestling and President of BC Wrestling, Kooner’s wrestling journey took off when he won the Simon Fraser University wrestling scholarship. He is a two-time provincial champion, six-time national champion and multiple time Canadian National Team member, as well as an All-American Champion with the SFU Varsity Wrestling team. He

graduated from SFU with a degree in Math, Kinesiology and Education, and completed his Real Estate Licensing course through UBC and currently works as a real estate agent in the Fraser Valley.

Gurjot’s biggest inspirations to wrestle were his father and brother.

Gurjot’s father wrestled for only a short while and did not get the chance to fully train and compete as much as he would have liked to for he began working at the age of 14. The fire to wrestle was particularly ignited for Gurjot as he watched his older brother, Inder wrestle to the national championship title.

Kooner first started practicing at Surrey Wrestling Club at Khalsa School. Their father would take both the brothers to Surrey 4-5 times a week for practice. It was 1999 was when Gurjot’s father decided to build a wrestling club on their farm. He

called it Miri Piri Wrestling Club. The club started off with around 20 young wrestlers. Today, Miri Piri Wrestling Club is a well-known name in the community for having tremendous success with training young wrestlers including national and provincial title winners including: Inder Kooner, Dr Hardeep Aujla, Harjit Purewal, Chanmit Phulka, Jora Nijjar, Hardeep Kaler, Rajin Gill, Gurman Gill, Harman Gill, Gurbaj Gill, Justin Gill, Sukhman Sidhu, Maneet Klair, Devin Purewal, Ranjit Lidder, JD Dhaliwal, Jas Uppal, Joban Phulka, Navi Toor, Jasmit Phulka and more.

Current wrestlers coached by Gurjot include provincial champions and provincial placers such as Summit Mann, Gagan Grewal, Parmjot Sidhu, Pritpal Sidhu, Juvraj Lidder, Anmol Lidder, Jasdeep Dhillon and Omrao Dhadda.

Jasmit Phulka. Luckily, two Abbotsford retired teachers took it upon themselves to help keep the program alive. Jim Mitchell and Ron Sweeney raised funds and helped coordinate the team.

They negotiated some gym space and were provided with two 90 minutes practices on campus, as well as access to the gym. They hired Kooner on as the head coach. “Without them, the wrestling team would not exist this year”, he says.

However, each athlete is still paying thousands out of their own pockets to not only attend UFV, but to wrestle and travel with the wrestling team.

“It is amazing that high school wrestlers see the success and opportunity with the UFV wrestling program and still want to compete for UFV. But a lot of them don’t know if they can afford it. I am hoping for next year, we are able to get some more practice time at the University, as well as some funding for the trips the wrestlers need to go on to compete at the nationals. These are very hard-working student athletes and I believe they should get just as much opportunity and support as the other student-athletes on campus.

In his role as Head Coach of the University of the Fraser Valley Wrestling Team, Kooner is responsible for everything from conducting practices on the mat to flying out with the team to all their competitions. “Although we have a small team, it is a very talented team.
