Province and Red Cross team up to help people affected by disasters

s flood waters recede throughout the province, and with another wildfire season on the horizon, the Province of British Columbia and the Canadian Red Cross have announced a new initiative designed to help people and families affected by disaster better transition into long-term recovery.

The new Recovery Transition Program is the first program of its kind offered in B.C., and was jointly developed by Emergency Management BC (EMBC) and the Canadian Red Cross. The program is in its early stages. EMBC and the Red Cross will work with local governments to implement it as quickly as possible.

Nemrava, Canadian Red Cross vicepresident for British Columbia and Yukon. “With the support of generous British Columbians, and in close collaboration with the government, we are pleased to be able to provide this assistance.” British Columbia operates one of the most-generous emergency social services programs in Canada, providing people with immediate emergency supports. These supports can include short-term shelter, food and clothing. Those affected by an emergency typically receive emergency social services support for up to 72 hours. The Province has been extending this timeline to meet the needs of those impacted by the flooding in Grand Forks. The Recovery Transition Program will commence when emergency social services concludes, and provide assistance for up to 90 days to households that are primary residences and have been determined to be uninhabitable by the local government. New strategy unveiled to recruit and retain more graduates in family medicine

esident medical graduates and graduating nurse practitioners will be offered positions in the new primary care networks, announced Adrian Dix, Minister of Health. “To address the gap in primary care, we are recruiting 200 nurse practitioners and 200 family doctors, including new graduates and residents of family medicine,” Dix said. “Through implementing team-based practices, we’re making sure new doctors are supported to focus on diagnostic medicine and developing strong relationships with their patients, and receive a good salary while they are also paying down their student debt. This kind of support can encourage more residents educated and trained in B.C. to stay and serve in the province’s primarycare system.” Through the provincial health authorities, the Province will offer graduating medical residents and nurse practitioners the opportunity to start their careers within primary-care networks in team-based practices on alternative payment arrangements, instead of the traditional fee-for-service payment plan. This means new doctors can benefit from the experience and knowledge of other health-care professionals, receive a steady level of compensation to offset any student debt they may have, and access benefits.

“Resident physicians have completed medical school and hold educational licences to deliver medical services, under the supervision of fully licensed practising physicians, and use their resident placements to gain valuable experience to determine their areas of expertise,” said Dr. David Kim, president, Resident Doctors of BC. “Having comprehensive support to experience family medicine within a team can mean greater success for new physicians, such as myself, as well as meeting the needs of primary care patients in British Columbia.”

The Team U10 Abby black played an amazing game but came up short with an 8-6 loss and finished 2nd place in the Provincial Championship. This was an amazing showing for a team with some brand-new football players. he Honourable Carla Qualtrough, Member of Parliament for Delta and Minister of Public Services and Procurement and Jati Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Mission – Matsqui Fraser –Canyon, today announced today that the Raincoast Conservation Foundation will receive $2,658,217 over five years for a project to help restore coastal habitats in the Fraser River Estuary of British Columbia.

In May 2017, the Government of Canada announced the $75 million Coastal Restoration Fund to help rehabilitate some of our most vulnerable coastlines and protect marine life and ecosystems. The Coastal Restoration Fund, under the responsibility of Fisheries and Oceans Canada, supports projects that contribute to coastal restoration on all of Canada’s coasts, with preference given to projects that are multiyear and involve a broad number of partners, including Indigenous groups.

The Raincoast Conservation Foundation’s estuary connectivity project will improve connectivity and natural processes on the banks of the Fraser River Estuary for the benefit of juvenile chinook, pink and chum salmon, as well as other fish species, and the species which rely on them. Applications for universal child care pilots now being accepted

As part of the Province’s commitment to creating affordable, accessible and quality child care in B.C., the Ministry of Children and Family Development is now accepting applications from licensed child care providers who want their facilities to become prototype sites — which will model child care at a cost of $200-a-month per child — and report on the results. Information learned from these prototype sites will inform changes and the expansion of universal child care over the next 10 years. The new prototype sites, which will run from Sept. 1, 2018, to March 31, 2020, will convert approximately 1,800 licensed child care spaces at existing facilities around the province into low-cost spaces for families. Flora Oswald earns UFV’s Governor General Silver Medal as top undergraduate

lora Oswald of Mission has tattoos on her face and chest, dropped out of high school at age 16, researches sexuality in a traditionally conservative market, changed her name this year, finished her four-year degree in three years despite suffering a serious brain injury, and ended up with a perfect 4.33 GPA on her last 30 credits to earn the Governor General’s Silver Medal as UFV’s top graduate from a bachelor’s degree program. She isn’t your average student. It will be exactly 1,000 days from Oswald’s very first class at UFV to the moment she crosses the convocation stage June 5. She finishes her bachelor’s degree with a major in psychology honours and minor in sociology.

Removing barriers for former youth in care outside the classroom

Former youth in care have access to additional wraparound supports during their post-secondary studies to help them afford the necessary expenses outside the classroom, with the Government of British Columbia’s renewed contributions to the Youth Futures Education Fund. “Students often turn to family for support with living expenses while they pursue their dreams and post-secondary education. But former youth in care rarely have that option,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. “The Youth Futures Education Fund is about that extra help. The fund is a great example of public and private efforts coming together to support former youth in care, and invest in their bright future.” The Youth Futures Education Fund is held at the Vancouver Foundation. It is guided by a third-party committee made up of numerous organizations that are experts within the field of youth in care, or helped to establish the fund. The fund helps students with non-tuition expenses while they attend school, helping to reduce the financial burden of living expenses — including textbooks, food and rent. “We are committed to making sure everyone has the opportunity to achieve their true potential. This funding announcement builds on our commitment to give youth the support they need to thrive, not just survive,” said Katrine Conroy, Minister of Children and Family Development. “On top of Budget 2018’s expansion of government’s Agreements with Young Adults, the Youth Futures Education Fund is making the dreams of successful post-secondary education possible for former youth in care.” This contribution to the Youth Futures Education Fund continues government’s commitment to supporting education and skills training for former youth in care. Budget 2018 expanded the Ministry of Children and Family Development’s Agreements with Young Adults program. Effective April 1, 2018, the upper age limit for the Agreements with Young Adults program was raised to a person’s 27th birthday, the maximum needs-based monthly support rate increased to $1,250 and students can now receive year-round funding while on scheduled program breaks.

The pattern is simple: youth who receive the support they need as they transition out of care become adults who are better equipped to support themselves and contribute to their communities.” The number of former youth in care benefiting from tuition-waiver programs has increased by 77% since it was expanded in September 2017. About 189 youth benefited from bursaries or waivers between September 2016 and June 2017, compared to 335 former youth in care who benefited from the provincial tuition waiver program between September 2017 and March 2018. Since the tuition waiver program was launched, the Province has reimbursed $1.8 million to postsecondary institutions, and has committed $6 million to the program over the next three years.

For the Record: Convocation is a Time of Celebration, Reflection and Inspiration Spoiler alert – this week’s edition of For The Record will have absolutely nothing to do with politics or public affairs. This week I am putting on my academic hat and getting introspective. For those who may not know, when I’m not busy serving as the managing partner of a public affairs consulting firm I have the privilege of serving as one of two Vice-Chairs on the University of the Fraser Valley Board of Governors – and I can honestly say it is a privilege. My journey with UFV began in my late twenties when – after having had to drop-out of college in my early twenties due to health challenges – I enrolled in a two-year Associate of Arts degree program. Little did I know how UFV would change my life. First and foremost, I fell in love with learning and researching (this from a guy who previously only read chapter headings and summaries). In fact, in addition to my Associate of Arts I went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts (UFV) and ultimately a Master of Laws (Lancaster University). However, it’s important to note that my academic

journey did not evolve simply because I feel in love with learning and researching, but rather because I also fell in love with all the things that make-up university culture.

This generally takes place when our students cross the stage oneby-one. This is the moment where, for many, it becomes real. From beaming smiles to chocking-back tears… from hand-shakes with our President to hugs with faculty members… this is the moment where it really ‘sinks-in’… they’ve done it! The third and final moment is one rooted in inspiration. It’s the moment when the student speaker concludes his or her remarks. In listening to our student speakers, one cannot help but feel inspired. to their fellow students that often times leaves me emotional. For some, university has been an awesome experience. For others, however, such is not necessarily the case. From health challenges, to the loss of loved ones, to balancing their academic responsibilities with family and work obligations, to those who have returned much later in life to accomplish a life-long dream because of challenging circumstance that forced them to put their academic pursuits on hold earlier in life, the reality is that these students have demonstrated what it means to take-ownership of their lives, remain resilient and to achieve their goals despite some substantial personal challenges. Though I may not get paid for it, I can honestly say that serving on the UFV Board of Governors is the best job I have ever had. There is no greater moment during the year than participating in our convocation ceremonies and being privy to these special moments. Justin P. Internationally acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, jury chairperson of the 65th National Film Awards, has praised actor Riddhi Sen for his "world beating performance" in Bengali film "Nagarkirtan". Kapur said. "What a world beating

Regional cinema’s style of work better than Bollywood : Sonakshi Sonakshi Sinha, who made her acting debut with Dabangg in 2010, agrees that certain facets of regional cinema are better than the mainstream Hindi film industry, but she finds it unfair to say it cannot achieve the attention and adulation that movies from different parts of the country are getting.In 2014, Sonakshi worked in Tamil film Lingaa with superstar Rajnikanth. Obituary Bikkar Singh Kahlon, fondly addressed as “Papaji” by his loved ones, passed away at the age of 94 on June 11, 2018 with his beloved family by his side. He leaves his wife of 82 years, his 3 sons, 4 daughters, 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and many extended members of his family. Although he had 7 children of his own, he was acknowledged as a father by all of his nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his 2 younger brothers, son, 2 son-in-laws and granddaughter.

Papaji was born in Mustafapur, Punjab, India. He immigrated to Canada in January 1987 and settled in Abbotsford, BC. He was a hard worker and a great family man who spent a great deal of his time devoted to his Sikh faith. Fraser Valley market finds comfortable pace in May as inventory reaches highest level in two years Of the 1,758 sales processed last month 417 were townhouses and 516 were apartments, together representing 53 per cent of all transactions in May.

SURREY, BC – The Fraser Valley stepped towards a more balanced market in May, with both sales and overall inventory reaching their highest points for the year. The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board processed 1,758 sales of all property types on its Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) in May, a decrease of 35.1 per cent compared to the 2,707 sales in May of last year, and a 2.9 per cent increase compared to the 1,708 sales in April 2018.

Active inventory for the Fraser Valley finished at 6,736 listings last month, the highest level since September 2015, increasing 18.9 per cent monthover-month and 29.5 per cent when compared to May 2017. The Board received 3,965 new listings in April, a 15.6 per cent increase from April 2018’s 3,429 new listings, and a 6.8 per cent increase compared to May 2017. For the Fraser Valley region the average number of days to sell an apartment in May was 15, and 16 for townhomes. Single family detached homes remained on the market for an average of 24 days before selling.

Survey predicts recreational property prices will slump in B.C. Adil Dinani, Royal LePage real estate adviser, said in a media release. However, the same report predicts the prices of recreational property in the Okanagan Valley, where some communities are covered by the speculation tax, will rise. It’s expecting the price of lakefront properties to rise 6.3 per cent compared to last year, while the price of non-waterfront property and resorts or condos to rise 6.9 per cent and 7.8 per cent, respectively. A national survey done by Royal LePage is predicting the price of B.C. recreational properties will slump slightly by the end of the summer. It blames the expected price drop on recreational homes of 2.8 per cent (compared to last year) on the new speculation tax, despite many

popular vacation areas being exempt from the tax. “While activity will continue to flourish in areas that are exempted from the new tax, like the Gulf Islands, regions that are not will stagnate, especially when farther away from the majority of city centres,”

“We are going to see a fairly flat line, maybe a bit of a bump here in the Okanagan,” said Kelowna real estate agent Mark Walker. “With this speculation tax, it has a lot of people speculating on what is going to happen to the prices. There are a lot of out-of-province [owners], as well as people from the coast, who

The Ministry of Finance said in a statement that the tax is part of the provincial government’s larger housing plan and that tax “targets foreign and domestic speculators who are driving up prices and holding vacant properties.” “[The tax] is focused on the largest urban centres, facing the most serious housing affordability crises, and addresses the issue of people from out of B.C. who don’t pay taxes here and take housing stock out of the market,” the Ministry of Finance statement said.

APD GANG CRIME UNIT - HOW THE GANGS OPERATE AND HOW TO GET OUT – HELP LINE WHY AND HOW DO YOUTH BECOME INVOLVED IN GANGS? WHAT ATTRACTS YOUTH? The thought of having money, nice clothes, the ability to buy anything you want, or even having a nice car, are often things that entice youth to be involved in gangs. These simple things are often "hooks" used by gangs to recruit youth to get involved. IS FEMALE GANG INVOLVEMENT INCREASING? Females are not immune to being recruited. Gangsters often recruit females as they think Police will pay little to no attention to them. The reality is that they are subject to the same violence as males involved in gangs. WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT STREET AND YOUTH GANGS? The Public and the Police need to continue to work together on both the prevention / education side of gangs. The police will continue to conduct enforcement, but public engagement and support reporting activity that is believed to be gang related is the key to ensuring we continue to have an impact in gang activity. WHAT ARE THE SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES OF GANG MEMBERSHIP? The short-term consequences of gang membership are that you will likely be subject to violence and/or end up being arrested for a crime. In the long-term, it often becomes harder to leave the gang lifestyle. In reality, there is no long-term, but a violent death is likely. WHAT PROPORTION OF YOUTH JOIN GANGS, AND HOW LONG DO THEY STAY IN IT? There are an increasing number of youth that are joining gangs. Most stay until it's too late and few realize sooner and make steps to leave the lifestyle. I BELIEVE MY CHILD MAY BE INVOLVED IN DRUGS AND GANG VIOLENCE. WHAT SHOULD I DO? GCU encourages parents who suspect their child of being involved in gangs to contact them for assistance. GCU will proactively work with the family to assist them with gang exiting strategy that will allow their child to get back into making positive choices. HOW CAN I WORK WITH THE POLICE TO PROTECT MY CHILD? The APD Gang Crime Unit, is not only an enforcement arm of the APD, but is also available to assist with any families or youth that are looking for assistance in either getting out of a gang or dealing with the peer pressures of entering into a gang.
