Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction – Honorable Shane Simpson Visits PICS SURREY - On January 9th, Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction visited the head office of Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society. While there, he had the opportunity to interact with staff, management and clients, and he re-emphasized the provincial government’s commitment to reducing poverty in BC. “Too many people are struggling to make ends meet, earn a living wage, or find and keep affordable housing. Too many families are suffering without necessities, relying on food banks, going hungry or sending their children to school hungry.

We need community organizations like PICS to partner with us to address this situation”, he said.

University of the Fraser Valley names new President

D

r. Joanne MacLean will be the new President and ViceChancellor of the University of the Fraser Valley.

MacLean is currently Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at UFV and will officially assume her new role on May 1, 2018. She replaces Jackie Hogan, who has held the office on an interim basis since June, 2017.

With more than 30 years of experience as a professor and university administrator, MacLean held appointments at the University of Windsor and Brock University in Southern Ontario before coming to UFV in 2012. She earned her undergraduate and master’s degrees in physical education at the University of New Brunswick in her hometown of Fredericton. She holds a PhD from Ohio State University, where she studied human resource management in sport and recreation, and administration in higher education.

MacLean has held positions as Professor, Department Chair, Athletic Director, and Dean. As an accomplished university basketball coach, she was selected Ontario Coach of the Year three times while at the University of Windsor. She participated as a coach and administrator at three World University Games, and was Canada’s Chef de Mission at the same event in 2003 in South Korea.

She is the author of two books and over 70 peer-reviewed publications and presentations, and her research interests include human resources and performance management, sport governance, and the Canadian sport system. She was named a Research Fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management in 2009.

She is the first woman to hold the title of President at UFV in a non-interim role.

Communicating with babies—studies show moms and dads can differ in approach Moms and dads living in urban and Western societies tend to differ in how they speak to babies—also known as ‘babytalk’—according to two SFU studies led by SFU psychology professor Tanya Broesch. The studies focus on the acoustic properties of speech used by parents.

Mothers were found to alter the pitch of their voice when speaking to infants, compared to when they spoke to an adult, in similar ways across cultures. Meanwhile in a study published in the journal Child Development, fathers from Vanuatu, a non-Western society in the South Pacific, also modified the pitch of their voice in ways that resembled mothers from

around the world. However, fathers from a Canadian city did not. Instead of raising their pitch, they slowed down their speech rate—another feature of babytalk.

Broesch is completing two follow-up studies with SFU linguistics professor Henny Yeung and collaborators Elise McClay and Senay Cebioglu. One study looks at the acoustic properties of infant-directed singing across cultures, and another, on parents’ use of “hyperarticulation,” or exaggerated speech, in Vanuatu.

The studies are part of Broesch’s larger research focus on how early experience shapes development. The research is among the first of its kind

to study how parents modify the range and pitch of their voices when speaking to their babies, and gives some insight into how parents approach their verbal interactions with their babies.

“Why do we change our pitch and speech style when we talk to babies?” asks Broesch, a developmental psychologist. “There are several proposed theories of infant-directed speech. I was interested in determining whether those in distant cultures also altered their speech when addressing their babies.

“Evidence for this suggests that this parenting behavior may be universal – something that is common across di-

verse societies. It is also interesting to see how these behaviors work across cultures and among primary and secondary caregivers,” says Broesch, adding that the studies show how behavioral traits can vary across distant cultures while still potentially solving similar communicative problems.

The exhibition explores our profound connection to the world’s oceans. This large-scale installation features sculptural forms

based on ancient water-going vessels and made from willow, dogwood, fig, and cedar branches, cheesecloth, animal skin and gut, bathymetric maps of oceans, and layers of wax. These evocative forms are suspended in a dimly-lit gallery and accompanied by a haunting soundscape. An embodied experience, the exhibition calls attention to the life-

sustaining connections between the precariously balanced chemistry of the ocean and the human body.

The Projectionist by Winnipeg artist, Mark Neufeld, brings together video, painting, performance, and objects from The Reach’s historical collections. It explores cinematic histories, settler narratives, gender roles, and museum collections as sites of contested value and values, as well as the role played by museum artifacts (and objects in general) in the construction of identities. Neufeld’s expansive and playful approach to exhibition-making conflates artistic and curatorial conventions while loosely tethering strands of narrative and pictorial traditions with an overarching sense of theatricality.

In Search by Image, Langley artist Christopher Friesen’s recent paintings are based on the ubiquity and circulation of imagery from the Western art historical canon. Using landscape paintings by French artist Jean Baptiste Camille Corot (17961875) as a point of departure, Friesen explores notions of influence, quotation, authorship, and the “real” in the age of digital reproduction.

Mission-based artist Marjatta Itkonen presents her recent project Touch. As one of five children and a mother of four, like many women artists of her generation, Itkonen has been required to balance the creative impulse against the demands of family life. For Touch, she creates figurative paper sculptures that recall her relationship with her mother, who remained in Finland when she came to Canada in 1972. Her treatment of domestic subject matter and adeptness with human form culminate in poignant visions of the persistence of familial relationships across time and space.

Rounding out this robust season of exhibitions is Art on Demand 4.1.

Curator Kendra Anderson has selected paintings that remind viewers that Abstract Expressionism is very much still alive in recent paintings

by Joy Kinna. Though the movement is nearly 80 years old, Kinna revives its physicality and aesthetic appeal while reclaiming a style that has historically been associated with

male artists. Joy Kinna was raised in the Fraser Valley and currently lives in Langley where she attends Trinity Western in her third year. Curator Kendra Anderson is currently a studying fine arts and art history at the University of the Fraser Valley. The Art on Demand exhibition program is a part of Emerge @ The Reach, is a membership-based creative incubator that offers exciting professional development activities to aspiring curators and artists between the ages of 18-35.

On the heels of the Thursday exhibition opening, The Reach hosts a free Artist Talk with Mark Neufeld on Friday, January 19 at 7pm. Neufeld is an artist working out of Winnipeg where he currently teaches at the University of Manitoba School of Art. He works with a variety of media, though painting remains the starting point for his activities. His exhibitions often take the form of installations that interweave paintings with readymade objects, assemblages, and presentation strategies borrowed from the curatorial domain. Neufeld will discuss his recent project The Projectionist within the context of his oeuvre and provide a short tour of the exhibition.

Sushant Sushant Singh Rajput, known to be among the league of A-listers often found buried under books, has taken his passion for reading a notch higher by creating a book club on social media. Rajput, almost apologetic for coining the name, says the platform will enable members to "discuss great books" and "share ideas."

Rajput says launching the club is only one among the series of things he intends to do this year. "This book

club is open to anyone who is interested to join it.

On the forum, we will discuss which books should be read, a timeline to finish them, and then share the takeaways.

recent spike in influenza activity throughout the region is prompting Fraser Health to remind people to get their flu shot to protect themselves and their loved ones. Since December 28, Fraser Health has seen five confirmed and four suspected influenza outbreaks in residential care facilities across the region.

“In the last week, we have noticed a significant increase in influenza

outbreaks across our region,” said Medical Health Officer Dr. Martin Lavoie. “While seasonal increases in flu activity are expected, we remind people that if they have a non-emergency health concern they have many options in the community to help them avoid a trip to the emergency department to ensure emergency services are available for those who need them.”

The symptoms of an influenza infection are fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, and cough. Complications from influenza, such as pneumonia, are more common in the elderly and those with heart, lung or other health conditions. Influenza is easily spread from person to person, and an infected person can spread the virus before they develop symptoms.

Flu shots are recommended for everyone six months of age and older and are available free of cost in B.C. for all children between six months and five years old, seniors 65 years old and older, pregnant women, Aboriginal people and individuals with

chronic health conditions or compromised immune systems. Cascades drop 65-50 decision to Spartans The Trinity Western Spartans turned in a tough defensive performance on the road Friday evening, earning a 65-50 win over the UFV Cascades in Canada West women’s basketball action.

The Spartans limited the Cascades to 27 points over the first 30 minutes of the game, and held UFV to 34.7 per cent shooting from the field to improve to 10-2. The Cascades fell to 4-10.

“Trinity’s a good veteran squad, and they taught us some lessons this weekend,” Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer said. “It’s a shame that we came out with an effort like we did tonight.”

ometime, it is hard to predict as to how things will turn out in future. Going back more than fifty years ago, who could have predicted that three childhood friends who went to school to-gether will meet again and work to-gether in one of Metro Vancouver’s prominent places of worship. This is exactly what happened in case of three individuals- Mohan Singh Sandhu, Sohan Singh Basi and me-Balwant Singh Sanghera.

Khalsa High School Bundala (now Government Higher Secondary School) in Jalandhar District of Punjab was (and hopefully still is) a prominent educational institution in the area. It had classes from grades five to ten from all of the villages in the area. This brought to-gether Sohan Basi from Bundala, Mohan Sandhu from Rurka Kalan and me from nearby Pharwala village a few kilometers away. All three of us started grade five (Section B) to-gether in 1950. From the very beginning, all three of us built a very strong bond with each other. Ironically, we stayed to-gether through grades five, six seven and eight. At the conclusion of grade eight, Mohan Sandhu got an opportunity to move to Coventry, England in 1954. The same year, a new high school (National High School) from grades five to ten began operating in Bilga. The school principal at that time-Beant Singh Sanghera – was a close friend of my family. He asked my family and others in the village to transfer all of the students from Khalsa High School Bundala to his schoolNational High School (now Government Higher Secondary School) Bilga.

to Vancouver (Canada) in 1966 to join my brother Gurbux Singh Sanghera and family. After receiving my teacher training here in Canadian universities I began teaching in Hudson’s Hope, BC in 1968. After five years of enjoying the cold winters and hot summers in northern BC, I moved to Lillooet, BC in 1973. After serving in the Lillooet Schools and also as Alderman (Councillor)/deputy Mayor in the Municipality of Lillooet for 17 years I accepted a position as a School Psychologist with Burnaby School District and moved to Richmond in 1990.

Sohan Basi was already actively involved in the affairs of India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas. Soon, Mohan and I also became actively involved in the Gurdwara-first as volunteers then as members. In 2014, both Mohan and I were honoured to become members of the management committee of the Gurdwara and join Sohan. All three of us continue to serve on the executive committee of India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas on Richmond’s Highway to Heaven. It is a great honour and a privilege for all three of us to work to-gether along with our colleagues to serve the community and the Gurdwara to the best our abilities. Our friends often refer to us-three class fellows- as Three Amigos. All of us often wonder that nature works in very curious ways. Bringing us together like this is one such example.

Mohan Sandhu continued to enjoy his stay and work in the Coventry area of England for twenty years. Then, along with his family, Mohan moved to Kamloops, BC in 1973. He liked Kamloops so much that he stayed Balwant Sanghera there for 20 years before moving to Richmond in 1993. After completing (Balwant Sanghera is a retired my high school, I went to complete my School Psychologist and Community B.Sc. from Punjab University. MVB: Cascades wrap up weekend sweep of Royals

T

he University of the Fraser Valley men’s volleyball team grew stronger as the match wore on, ultimately dispatching the Douglas Royals in three straight sets on Saturday evening in New Westminster.

The Cascades, No. 14 in the CCAA national rankings, were coming off a four-set triumph over the Royals on Friday. After grinding out a 25-22 first-set win to open the rematch, they found their form over the last two sets, closing out the match 25-19 and 25-14.

UFV (8-6) is on a roll, having won six of its last seven games with the lone loss coming at the hands of the nation’s No. 4-ranked team, the VIU Mariners. The Royals, meanwhile, fell to 5-9.

“I thought Douglas came out better in the first set, and we did a good job to weather the storm a little bit,” Cascades head coach Kyle Donen analyzed. “So taking that first set felt like it put us in the driver’s seat. In the second set we kind of took control, and then in the third we ran away with it.

It was another good team effort topto-bottom – everyone played well.”

The Cascades truly hit their stride late in the second set – leading 21-19, they reeled off four straight points to go up two sets to none. They tore off a 10-2 run to open the third and essentially drain any suspense from the proceedings, maintaining a lead in the neighbourhood of 10 points the rest of the way.

UFV’s offence was incredibly balanced, as they managed to win decisively despite not having any players in double-digit kills. With setter Adam Frederickson at the controls, Nick Bruce, Ben Friesen and Dayton Pagliericci tied for team-high honours with seven kills apiece, and Matt Whittall had six.

Pagliericci and Frederickson had two blocks each, and Pagliericci and Friesen both notched a pair of aces.

Cervical Cancer Screening Can Save YOUR Life

In BC, South Asian women have a 1.5 - 4.5 times higher incidence of invasive cervical cancer than other women.

The 2012-2014 screening rate for all women aged 20-69 in Abbotsford is 51.8%. This is lower than Fraser Valley’s overall rate which is 55.3%.

cervical cancer can be prevented with regular PAP tests and following up on any abnormal results. Women age 2569 should be screened every 3 years.

(NC) There's a common belief that women tolerate pain better than men, and this is something that can influence your next visit to the doctor.

While it's true that some doctors take women's pain less seriously, there is another, lesser-known way that women's health can be negatively affected by outdated beliefs.

Drug trials and medical research used to develop new treatments often only focus on men, neglecting the differences that are unique to women and their health. The assumption is that if a therapy works for a man, it will work for a woman. However, biological and other gender differences make women more susceptible than men to some common diseases.

This is something Karen Jensen, a naturopathic doctor who was in clinical practice for 25 years, tackles in her new book, Women's Health Matters: The Influence of Gender on Disease. “Many healthcare practitioners are not aware of the gender bias in clinical

Moving? How to find the right neighbourhood (NC) The search for the perfect house begins with the search for the perfect neighbourhood, which can be daunting. Searching for something so openended and with so many variables can be an overwhelming task, but it doesn't have to be. You just have to know where to start your search and where you can take it from there. Get ready to find that dream neighbourhood.

Search yourself. You can't really know what to look for in a neighbourhood until you know exactly what you want.

Make a list, take your time. Write down the things that really matter to you. Decide priorities. Order your list from most to least important. Moving in with your partner? Have them do the same, and see where your priorities line up and where you diverge. Now that you know what you want, it's time to go get it.

Search the streets. Don't underestimate the importance of this step. You really can't know a neighbourhood until

you've walked its streets at several different times of day. Get a feel for the level of traffic and noise, decide if you're okay with it. See how the streets feel. Are they lit enough at night? Would it be nice to go for a run through your neighbourhood? Make sure you visit each of your candidate neighbourhoods.

Search the stats. While you hunt at street level, make sure you take your research to a bird's-eye view at the same time. You would be amazed at the kinds of things you can learn about a neighbourhood just from its census data. How old are people there? How many kids are in the neighbourhood?

How many people are home owners?

How much are the average monthly costs to live there? What languages are spoken in the neighbourhood?

Combine your research with your street-level hunting and you'll soon find yourself walking through the perfect neighbourhood for you and your family.

City Manager George Murray to retire 2018; City starting recruitment process City Manager, George Murray has informed Abbotsford City Council of his intention to retire this year, announced Mayor, Henry Braun today.

“For the past 5 years, George has been an invaluable part of our organization,” said Braun. “We will definitely miss his steady leadership and strategic voice at City Hall.”

Murray assumed responsibility for management of the City of Abbotsford’s $260 million budget and approximately 1,000 municipal workers in early 2012. Murray will remain to support the recruitment and transition process for an incumbent to the City Manager position. As such a firm date for his retirement has not yet been set, however his position will be posted this month.

“This was not an easy decision for me to make and there is likely never a perfect time in any organization for this type of transition, but now is the right time for me personally,” said Murray.

“Although I am truly going to miss working for the City, I experienced a significant and unexpected health issue last year and this is the right decision for me and for my family.”

The City has retained an executive search firm to begin the process of finding a new City Manager for Abbotsford as soon as possible.

“George can be extremely proud of the accomplishments the City of Abbotsford has made under his leadership,” said Braun. “George has helped us become a City that is highly attractive to new residents, businesses and developers alike, has a reputation for innovation,

House hunting or selling your home? Check radon levels (NC) One of the biggest mistakes both buyers and sellers make is not testing for hidden health hazards.

But if you're a buyer, you want to make sure that your new home will provide a healthy living environment for you and your family. If you're a seller, showing that your home is free from certain dangers can help close the deal and offer potential buyers peace of mind.

One hazard that Health Canada is recommending that all homeowners test for is radon, a radioactive gas that comes from uranium in the ground and can get into a home undetected.

Since long-term exposure to radon is known to cause lung cancer, it's a smart move to check its levels.

Testing is simple — you can either purchase a do-it-yourself test kit or hire a certified radon measurement professional. The DIY kit will include instructions on how to set up the test and send it back to a lab for analysis once the testing period is over.

To get a realistic estimate of the radon exposure, all measurements should be made in the lowest livedin level of the house where people spend more than four hours per day. Poten-

tial measurement locations include family rooms, living rooms, dens, playrooms and bedrooms. A lower level bedroom is preferred because people generally spend more time in their bedrooms than in any other room in the house. Similarly, if there will be children in the house, lowest level bedrooms or other areas such as a playroom are preferred.

Health Canada recommends a longterm test for a minimum of three months. If you're selling, this means you should complete the test before listing your property. If you're buying, you will need to make sure there is enough time to complete the testing or request that a clause be added to the sale agreement to allow for high radon levels to be fixed. The cost of a radon reduction system, if needed, is very small compared to the cost of the home.

A dream home doesn't become a nightmare if it tests positive for high radon levels — techniques to lower radon levels are effective, affordable and will improve the home's indoor air quality. A radon mitigation system can be installed in less than a day, and in most homes will reduce the radon level by more than 80 per cent for about the same cost as other common home repairs such as replacing the furnace or air conditioner.
