Dear Friends of Punchestown,
On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to the final day of the 2023 Punchestown Festival. We say it time and time again, although it really is the people that make Punchestown, it simply would not be the same without you. We truly thank you for supporting us in these challenging times and for joining us today, we really hope you enjoy everything that the Punchestown experience has to offer.
Today is about community, family, youth and looking forward to the next generation. The Grade 1 €125,000 Ballymore Champion four-year-old Hurdle takes centre stage as the feature race on day five. I would like to welcome Sean, Bernardine, their family, friends and guests back to Punchestown. The Mulryan’s have been fantastic supporters of Punchestown for many years and we wish them and their team in Ballymore every continued success.
The Saturday of the Punchestown Festival has certainly been one of the success stories of Irish Racing. Formerly the Saturday was an industry day but was introduced as a fifth festival day with the concept of family and community. The attendance has grown from under 2,000 to a massive 37,000 in recent years. This made it the largest attended day of the week and its popularity is in no small part due to the brilliant support from Ballymore who were the driving force behind it. One of today’s main focuses is to introduce our next generation of racegoers to Punchestown and instil and strengthen the strong tradition that we have within the local community.
I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors today and indeed throughout the week for their continued support. It is their involvement that enables us to showcase the highest calibre of equine and sporting talent on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season. Whilst the season is nearing the end, with over €3.3 million in prizemoney and 12 Grade 1 contests on offer over the past five days it ensures there is still plenty to play for right to the very end.
We were thrilled to see such an array of notable entries from the U.K. throughout the week who were intent on renewing rivalries again on Irish soil. The U.K. involvement is such an integral part of our festival and we sincerely thank all trainers, owners, jockeys and racing fans for making the extra effort to travel to Punchestown. We really do hope you enjoyed the experience and we wish you every continued success and a safe journey home.
The Punchestown Festival takes an enormous amount of planning and hard work from countless numbers of people. The heroes of Punchestown are the people who make it. That includes sponsors, customers, contractors, trainers, jockeys, stable staff, volunteers, owners, medical staff, I.H.R.B, H.R.I, Naas Gardaí and too many more to mention. Punchestown is famous for its atmosphere and without people you have no atmosphere so a massive thank you must go to you all from everyone here at the home of Irish jump racing.
I would also like to give a very special mention to my own team here in Punchestown whom I’m extremely proud of, your only as good as the team around you and what a team they are. They take it personally and endeavour to ensure your experience at Punchestown exceeds all expectations. I want to thank each of you for your endless hours of hard work, dedication, commitment and support behind the scenes. You played a hugely significant role in staging yet another very memorable Punchestown festival which you can all be very proud of and ensured that we all had a week to savour.
Thank You and Well Done.
Kindest Regards, Conor O’Neill, Punchestown
CEO.

Runner-up in this race last season, THE DABBLER appeared to lose confidence with an early mistake at Fairyhouse. He may now cope with the in-form veteran Sir Bob who finished second in that Fairyhouse event. My Design has taken well to fences, and Velvet Elvis has a sound chance over a trip that should bring out the best in him. [Alan Sweetman] Source: Racing Post

RACE VERDICT
It was a career best from LOSSIEMOUTH when justifying favouritism in the Triumph last time and on the back of that career best performance, she’s hard to oppose. Gala Marceau was a creditable second in that contest and can give another good account but the less exposed Enjoy The Dream might be the main danger after a huge run in a Grade 2 at Fairyhouse earlier this month. RACE VERDICT
A case can be made for plenty of these including the well treated Felix Desjy who seems to save his best for this venue and An Epic Song who was only narrowly denied in the Coral Cup last time out. SEDDON is the preferred option. He took out a competitive renewal of the Plate at Cheltenham last month and he’s rated 9lb lower over hurdles. Heia and Risk Belle are two of the leading hopes for Willie Mullins from the Champion Trainer’s sextet and Green Glory still has plenty of upside on just his third handicap start. RACE VERDICT
With no Rules form to go on, it’s worth taking a chance on SORRENTINO a fine season with their bumper horses. Willie Mullins has been banging in the winners all week and this five-year-old is the firststring over the well-bred Rainbow Trail was only narrowly denied in a point on debut and he could be the main danger for another outfit that do well in this sphere.
