On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse
Festival Thursday is all about stamina as the Grade 1 €300,000 Ladbrokes Stayers Hurdle takes centre stage on day three. Again, I would like to welcome all the team from Ladbrokes who are long standing supporters of Punchestown back to the Home of Irish Jump Racing. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors today and indeed over the five days for their continued support. It is their involvement that enables us to showcase the highest calibre of equine and sporting talent on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season. Although the season is far from over as we all gather to celebrate the biggest week of the year on the Irish Racing Calendar, with over €3.3 million in prizemoney, featuring 12 Grade 1 Contests.
I’m delighted to welcome you to the much-anticipated opening day of the 2023 Punchestown Festival. We say it time and time again, although it really is the people that make Punchestown, it simply would not be the same without you. We truly thank you for supporting us in these challenging times and for joining us today. We really hope you enjoy everything that the Punchestown experience has to offer.
Today also features the famous Mongey Communications Cross Country Chase for the La Touche Cup which is one of the highlights of the year at Punchestown and a spectator favourite. Punchestown boasts the only cross country course in Ireland, a race over four miles with 35 obstacles to be encountered it’s certainly hard to believe that this race often produces the tightest of finishes.
The Goffs Punchestown Sale is scheduled to take place this evening after racing in the fitting location of the Punchestown winner’s enclosure. A select number of top bumper and point to point winners who have impressed over the last number of weeks will go under the hammer to the leading trainers, owners and bloodstock agents in the industry. It’s a fantastic spectacle and we look forward to welcoming many of them back to the winner’s enclosure at Punchestown as their careers continue.
The thrilling renewal of the Grade 1 €300,000 William Hill Champion Chase takes centre stage as the feature race on day one and I would like to welcome all the team from William Hill to the Home of Irish Jump Racing. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors today and indeed over the five days for their continued support. It is their involvement that enables us to showcase the highest calibre of equine and sporting talent on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season. Whilst the season is nearing the end, with over €3.3 million in prizemoney and 12 Grade 1 contests on offer perhaps the best is yet to come! It’s a week of celebration as we gather to celebrate one of the annual highlights on the Irish sporting calendar.
We’re thrilled to see such an array of notable entries from the U.K. throughout the week who are set to renew rivalries again on Irish soil. The U.K. involvement is such an integral part of our festival and we sincerely thank all trainers, owners, jockeys and racing fans for making the extra effort to travel to Punchestown. We really do hope you enjoy the experience and we wish you every success and a safe journey home.

The father-and-son Dempsey combination cracked this puzzle last year and may have the solution now with BROOMFIELD BIJOU who trounced the odds-on favourite in a recent mares’ maiden. Gordons Aura and Figaroc are potentially the key horses for the Elliott and Mullins camps respectively and are very closely matched on Fairyhouse form. Tony Martin’s Golf Marin could feature after a confidence-boosting maiden win. Ifiwerearichman appeals with Rob James claiming a very valuable 7lb. [Alan Sweetman]

Though KLASSICAL DREAM ran no race in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, he had suffered an interrupted preparation and that track doesn’t bring out his best anyway. Paul Townend stays loyal, so he can complete a three-timer in this race. Sire Du Berlais was a surprise winner of the Stayers’ Hurdle but followed up at Aintree. He is a big player if still fresh after those efforts. Teahupoo was a close third to him at Cheltenham and a repeat of that will see him bang there. [Tyrone Molloy]

A Great View is going for his third win in this race and has to be respected off 3lb lower than last year but is vulnerable to younger rivals. UK challenger LORD SNOOTIE is of most interest for a trainer who is brilliant with stayers and could still have a bit in hand of the handicapper. His compatriot Kilbeg King isn’t ignored either. Ailie Rose put up a career-best last time and is a player, while Verdant Place, Sweet Will, Seabank Bistro, Walking On Air and Rebel Ivy are others to consider. [Tyrone Molloy] Source: Racing Post
