On behalf of the Kildare Hunt Club and the entire team here at Punchestown Racecourse I’m delighted to welcome you to day two of the 2023 Punchestown Festival. We say it time and time again, although it really is the people that make Punchestown, it simply would not be the same without you. We truly thank you for supporting us in these challenging times and joining us today. We really hope you enjoy everything that the Punchestown experience has to offer.

The eagerly anticipated renewal of the Grade 1 €300,000 Ladbrokes Gold Cup takes centre stage as the feature race today and I would like to welcome all the team from Ladbrokes who are long standing supporters of Punchestown back to the Home of Irish Jump Racing. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors today and indeed over the five days for their continued support. It is their involvement that enables us to showcase the highest calibre of equine and sporting talent on both sides of the Irish Sea, for the grand finale of the Irish jump racing season. Although the season is far from over as we all gather to celebrate the biggest week of the year on the Irish Racing Calendar, with over €3.3 million in prizemoney, featuring 12 Grade 1 Contests that makes Punchestown one of the annual highlights on the Irish sporting calendar.

J.P. McManus is well renowned as being one of the greatest supporters of national hunt racing, not only as a prominent owner, but also as the sponsor of the Adare Manor Opportunity Series, the final of which takes place today. This fantastic initiative provides young jockeys in the early stages of their career with a huge opportunity to gain experience and showcase their talent on the racecourse. This is only one of the many ways both J.P. and Noreen support the racing industry for which we are extremely grateful and I’ve no doubt that we are looking at some of the potential future stars of the weighroom in action.

We’re also thrilled to see such an array of notable entries from the U.K. throughout the week who are set to renew rivalries again on Irish soil. PLACING YOUR BETS

STRAIGHT FORECAST: NAME THE FIRST AND SECOND HORSES IN THE CORRECT ORDER.

1. Select a horse by name or number.

2. Shop around for the best odds with the bookmakers or bet at a Tote window.

RACING LINGO

3. Name that horse and the amount you wish to bet to the bookmaker.

4. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your horse name or number to his clerk.

5. Take a ticket as your itemised receipt.

AMATEUR RIDERS – ON RACECARDS ARE DENOTED BY THEIR TITLE MR, MS, ETC. TO INDICATE THEIR AMATEUR STATUS.

6. Always keep your ticket safe until after you hear an announcement of ‘Winner Alright’ as if your horse did not win it might get the race as an outcome of a ‘Stewards Enquiry’ should the winner be disqualified for any reason.

GOING – REFERS TO THE DESCRIPTION BY THE TURF CLUB OF THE GROUND CONDITIONS ON THE RACE COURSE.

HANDICAP - A HANDICAP RACE IN HORSE RACING IS A RACE IN WHICH HORSES CARRY DIFFERENT WEIGHTS, ALLOCATED BY THE HANDICAPPER.

7. When your horse wins present your ticket to collect your winnings.

MAIDEN - A MAIDEN RACE IS AN EVENT FOR HORSES THAT HAVE NOT WON A RACE.

COLLECTING YOUR WINNINGS

1. Keep your ticket safe.

2. If your horse wins hand it back to the bookmaker for settlement.

3. Never destroy your ticket until after the ‘Weighed In’ announcement has been made.

RULE 4 – THIS IS A BETTING RULE COVERING DEDUCTION MADE FROM WINNING BETS IF A HORSE IS WITHDRAWN AFTER THE BETTING MARKET HAS BEEN FORMED BEFORE A RACE COMMENCES. THE AMOUNT DEDUCTED DEPENDS ON THE PRICE OF THE WITHDRAWN HORSE.

4. If your horse has not won there may be a stewards enquiry and the winner, or placed horses, may be disqualified.

5. On rare occasions even the fourth horse has been awarded the race.

STEWARDS ENQUIRY – THIS IS AN ENQUIRY BY THE STEWARDS INTO THE RUNNING OF A RACE. DO NOT THROW AWAY LOSING BETS WHEN THIS IS ANNOUNCED AS RESULTS CAN BE ALTERED AS AN OUTCOME OF AN ENQUIRY.

PUNCHESTOWN CHARITY RACE on Saturday 29th April

2022 was a phenomenal year for the PKRF and we managed to raise €93,577 from the PKRF Charity Race.

Leinster & Ireland rugby player James Tracy raised an additional €21,925 from his brave February Freezebury Challenge.

The total raised raised for the PKRF in 2022 was €115,502

The cumulative total raised to date is €1,702,677 which is phenomenal.

During the past year we managed to support the following projects:

Our 2 flagship projects were the development of a Pilot Peer Support program and also the James Tracy/ PKRF Beam Exercise & Wellbeing Program for Kidney Patients

We continued our research into Polycystic Kidney Disease in partnership with the Irish Nephrology Society under the guidance of the Irish Research Council.
