Since its founding in 1841 by Protestant missionaries on lands given to them

by Hawaiian chiefs, Punahou School has educated students to become the next generation of leaders and innovators. Now the largest independent school on a single campus in the United States, Punahou serves over 3,777 students from kindergarten through grade 12, preparing them for success in college and throughout life.Through world-class academic and co-curricular programs, Punahou encourages students to cultivate their interests and talents, aim for their highest potential and become positive forces in the world.

Additional Exceptional Programs Centers Distinctions This four-year program honors exceptional achievements in knowledge, skills, and dispositions within the Wo International Center, Luke Center for Public Service, Kuaihelani Center for ‘Ike Hawai‘i, CASE Accelerator for Student Entrepreneurship, Civic Education, and Design, Technology and Engineering. Students earn distinctions by demonstrating focused study and skill aligned with Center competencies, culminating with a Distinctions Defense, during which students will present their portfolio to a panel of Centers leaders. Students may only pursue one Center Distinction. Transcripts will indicate whether a Center Distinction is “expected” and later “received.”

Interdisciplinary These courses combine the key concepts and crucial skill sets from at least two disciplines into one course. Students practice exploring ideas or solving problems through the lenses of each discipline, while also striving to construct a lens that transcends the individual disciplines. Various interdisciplinary (ID) courses are offered in grades 9 – 12. Global Sustainability by Design (GSD) courses are offered for 9th and 10th grade students interested in tackling sustainability issues of global and local significance. These courses provide credits from more than one discipline.

Ke Kilohana This Social Studies course enables students to apply their skills and knowledge in service to a community of practice. In their senior year, students select from various Ke Kilohana courses that emphasize applied learning across disciplines. They engage in collective service opportunities and identify a community need to create an individual service project, culminating in a public product, presentation, or performance.

This is a semester-long course worth half a credit and satisfies the Social Studies graduation requirement.

Explorations This program offers an immersive opportunity for students to explore unique and authentic topics in a supportive learning environment. Each course is open to interested students whose schedules allow for participation. While student growth is assessed, the focus is on learning and exploration rather than traditional grading, and no graduation credit is assigned.

School Year Abroad To support rigorous academic study abroad, Punahou partners with certain institutions to offer a diverse range of semester and yearlong study programs, enabling students to immerse themselves in different cultures while pursuing their academic goals.

Global Online Academy The GOA offers diverse and rigorous credit-bearing courses to students in member schools around the world, ensuring that learners can engage deeply with the material at their own pace. All GOA courses have both synchronous and asynchronous components, allowing for meaningful live interactions alongside flexible independent study.

Unique Leadership Opportunities Carnival Carnival is an annual, campus-wide initiative that builds leadership and community while raising funds for financial aid. Led by the junior class, the two-day event welcomes tens of thousands of visitors and involves thousands of student, parent, faculty, staff, and alumni volunteers.

Together they raise more than $2 million, while juniors gain valuable experience in leadership and collaboration in support of financial aid.

Holokū The Holokū tradition highlights student leadership and cultural pride through a vibrant celebration of hula and Hawaiian heritage. Students coordinate rehearsals, design costumes, and manage logistics, strengthening teamwork skills while honoring their roots. This annual event fosters community and helps students carry forward leadership qualities that last well beyond Punahou.

Outdoor Education The Outdoor Education program cultivates leadership and self-confidence by connecting students to the land through inquiry-based, hands-on learning. Through experiences that meet physical, emotional, and curricular needs, students develop awareness of local and global environments while deepening their connection to Hawaiian culture.

I Ho‘okahi The I Ho‘okahi 9th Grade Orientation Student Leadership Team consists of seniors and juniors who help ease the transition for incoming Academy students. These leaders guide a team of student mentors and oversee recruiting, training, a club fair, student panels, registration, and advisory activities across two days of orientation.

Variety Show A cherished tradition since 1952, the student-produced Variety Show showcases the creativity of the senior class through comedy, music, theatre, and dance. Seniors take the lead in writing, choreography, and directing, strengthening leadership and collaboration while sharing their artistic talents.

The show is a highlight of Carnival and a capstone experience for the class.

Luke Leaders The Luke Leaders program supports Academy students who aspire to build peace, organize communities, and confront injustice. Students design and lead projects, receive one-on-one mentorship, and connect with changemakers through group meetings. The program encourages them to identify local needs, engage with the community, and drive meaningful change.

Sustainability Fellowship Supported by a grant from the E.E. Ford Foundation, the Punahou Sustainability Fellowship empowers Academy students and peers statewide to lead projects and internships advancing climate action. Fellows receive mentorship, attend workshops, and collaborate at events such as the Hawai‘i Youth Climate Festival.The program builds innovation, leadership, and responsibility, preparing students to be changemakers for a sustainable future.

Advanced Schooling: Four Year History We take great pride in our graduates and their college choices. The range of schools they attend reflects the diverse talents and interests of our vibrant student body. Virtually all members of the Class of 2025 pursued higher education, enrolling at 143 institutions worldwide – 98% at four-year colleges and 2% at two-year colleges.
