Aloha, It was a joy to be under the tent at the 2019 Alumni Lū‘au, and to feel the deep pride of our alumni as they returned to campus and the palpable energy of classmates reconnecting. It struck me that Alumni Week comes together each year with such spirit and aloha because of the small army of Class volunteers who take the lead on behalf of their classmates and the School. You give of yourselves, your time, and your energy to provide a Reunion experience for others that is unmatched anywhere else in the world. Your commitment to be ambassadors for Punahou’s vision helps support the School today and into the future. You do it because, like me, you love Punahou as a place that had a powerful impact on your life.

REUNION COMMITTEE OVERVIEW Each Class Reunion Committee works closely with the Reunion Team in Alumni Relations. The Office of Alumni Relations supports and guides the committee throughout the year. Punahou suggests organizing a Reunion Committee comprised of a diverse group of classmates to plan Alumni Week Class activities and to inspire the generosity of classmates to pay it forward with a Class Gift. Each Reunion Committee will be asked to identify chair(s) to lead the activity and gift initiatives. Reunion Committees meet at Punahou facilities approximately once a month throughout the year. All events and meetings held at Punahou are arranged through Reunion Team staff. Committee members should contact Alumni Relations for any requests from the following campus departments: Physical Plant, Food Services, Chapel, Athletics, Archives, Video Department and Visual Production Center (VPC).

REUNION GIFT INFORMATION When you were at Punahou, alumni you’d never met supported the campus, teachers and programs that made your experience so special. Today, alumni continue this incredibly meaningful act of philanthropy. Without gifts from alumni, Punahou would simply not be the School it is. The size of an alumnus’ gift can be commensurate with their circumstances. Gifts of all sizes are equally appreciated by the School. While a larger gift may have a greater immediate impact, the multitude of smaller gifts add up to significant resources. All of these precious gifts create the fabric of aloha that binds us together.

THE PUNAHOU FUND

This fund provides invaluable unrestricted support for the School’s highest priorities. Gifts to the Punahou Fund impact almost every area of the School.

While a gift to any area at Punahou counts toward your Class Gift, here are the School’s giving priorities identified for the 2019-2020 school year:

FINANCIAL AID

We are committed to funding a family’s demonstrated financial need so 100% of the bright, motivated and talented students who are admitted to Punahou can attend the School and take full advantage of Punahou’s opportunities and enhance the School’s diverse community.

THE K–12 LEARNING COMMONS

We are reimagining our learning environments and building vibrant, future-oriented K – 12 centers for innovation and creativity. The Learning Commons are a network of resource spaces on campus, including the newly opened Richardson Lab in Mamiya Science Center and the Junior School facilities within Sidney and Minnie Kosasa Community for Grades 2 – 5. 6

TOP 5 REASONS TO GIVE BACK TO PUNAHOU

1 3 5

Giving back is a Punahou tradition. Punahou was founded on philanthropy, including the lands gifted by Hawaiian monarchy. Whether you knew it or not, alumni giving has always been a key ingredient in the “special sauce” that makes Punahou so unique.

The need is real. Really. With 3,750+ students, Punahou is the largest co-educational K-12 school on a single campus in the United States. When you break down our gifts received and overall endowment per student, we lag behind the national average of private schools. Like most top schools, we rely heavily on philanthropy to achieve an outstanding learning environment for our students.

2 4

What’s your reason?

#WhyIGiveToPunahou 8

Punahou isn’t just about Punahou students. Today, the School’s mission and programs impact a broader population in Hawai‘i and all around the world.

These are your people. Met a Punahou student lately? We have one of the most diverse student bodies on the planet. They are innovative, collaborative, empathetic and extraordinary. With your help, they will make the world the best it can be.

9

YO UR C L ASS GIFT Reunion classes are acknowledged and celebrated for the many ways that alumni choose to support Punahou through the Class Gift, which encompasses all gifts, pledges and planned gifts received. Updates will be provided to committee members with the progress towards the Class Gift dollar and participation goals throughout the year. All gifts, pledges and planned gifts supporting Punahou School count towards the Class Gift.

If you are at least 70-1/2 years of age, you can make a tax-free gift of up to $100,000 directly from your individual retirement accounts (IRA) to Punahou every year. Pledge all or part of your required minimum distribution and avoid taxes. Contact Carrie Ogami, Director of Gift Planning, at cogami@punahou.edu or 808.944.5845 for a sample instruction letter to your IRA custodian.

Gifts of appreciated securities avoid the tax liability of a sale. Punahou receives full-value of the securities undiminished by capital gains tax. To receive securities transfer instructions, contact Lisa Tongg ’83 Becker at 808.944.3583.

B EQ U ESTS AND L IFE INCO M E G IFTS

With gift planning, you can make a gift that will benefit Punahou in the future and, in the case of life income gifts, provide you with immediate tax benefits and additional income for the rest of your life. A revocable planned gift can be as easy as naming Punahou as a beneficiary of your estate or retirement plan. Donors 65 years of age and older can establish a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) that pays lifetime income with a minimum gift of $10,000. Deferred CGAs are available for donors 55 years of age and older. For sample bequest language and to learn more about charitable gift planning, please contact Carrie Ogami, Director of Gift Planning, at cogami@punahou.edu or 808.944.5845. Information is available at punahou.edu/giftplanning.

Multi-payment gifts or pledges multiply the impact of your gift dramatically. If you pledge your gift over five years, the total pledge amount will count toward your Class Gift. For example, if you typically give $100 a year, but turn it into a pledge over five years, your Class will get credit for a $500 gift during this Reunion year.
