A BIG DEAL Having done a fair share of acting over the years, I’ve learned
that the world of theater can, in some ways, be a small one. This is particularly true of local theatre projects and companies.

Case in point:
I met Elizabeth Lucas,
founder of Free Range Humans, about a week before we had planned to sit down to discuss this article. Both of us showed up in Frederick at an unrelated theatre event. Because I had not met her before then, I was only aware of her presence because a Free Range Humans cast member with whom I had been conversing, mentioned the group then introduced me to Elizabeth. As I said, the proverbial “small world” concept at play. Yet the term “small” can mean many things within the theatre landscape. Small turnout. (Negative.) Small donation. (Positive.) And even those not involved with the stage have probably heard the ancient expression, “There are no small parts, only small actors.” In the case of Free Range Humans, “small” is positive. In context it refers to more intimate productions in accessible, often unconventional, spaces. This brings the audience into the production. We call that “immersive entertainment,” and it’s a key concept of

“Everything I’m going to be doing,” Lucas said, “is audience focused.” To accomplish this mission, the for-profit company will focus on musical productions and, some day, original works by local musical composers. Consider the company’s debut production, “Murder Ballad,” a musical about a love triangle that goes awry. It includes only four characters. If you weren’t lucky enough to see it, you can infer from the description and title that it is a story of suspense and passion. Free Range Humans upped the intensity by staging the show at McClintock Distillery. This unorthodox (for a theatre) venue allowed the production to capitalize on all the potential of immersive entertainment; any audience member can literally reach out and touch the performers during the

Another deceptively “small” production, “Always, Patsy Cline” began performances in late summer. Featuring 27 songs from the late country legend, this musical has only two characters, the titular Patsy Cline, and a woman with whom she corresponded for decades, Louise Seger. The two “converse” via letters, which invites the sort of immersive entertainment experience that Free Range Humans offers. Sky Stage, an outdoor venue on South Carrol Street in Frederick, hosted the second outing of the fledging company. True to its experimental, audience-centered nature, the production placed the performers in what are normally the seats, and sat the audience on the “stage.” As of this writing, the response to the company has been encouraging. At present, Free Range Humans does not have a permanent venue. This freedom allows it to travel all over the area in search of locations that other

theatre companies may not use.

Through all of it, Lucas emphasized that Free Range Humans remains a Frederick-based operation. Having recently worked at Frederick’s New Spire Arts, Lucas is familiar with the community and the many “layers” it offers. An enthusiastic consumer of arts offerings in both Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Lucas doesn’t think there’s a need for a regular immersive theatre experience in those places, “like there is here” in Frederick. By filling this void within Frederick, she hopes to make the growing city a regional arts destination in its own right. It may be the “little sister” of cities in the area for now, but the “small” Frederick and surrounding areas will, if Free Range Humans has anything to say about it, make a large impact on audiences.

BEYOND the Cookie Cutter For a lot of people Christmas = cookies. Dozens and dozens of cookies. From chocolate kiss-topped peanut butter to gingerbread, almond horns, thumbprints, pizzelle or spritz, chances are if you celebrate the holidays, you’re doing it with cookies. Two Frederick-based businesses celebrate that way, too, and are here to help you up your cookie game this year. Both Sugar Dot Cookies and Two Sweet LLC create amazing decorated sugar cookies, iced to perfection. And the ladies behind these sweet treats say practice makes perfect when it comes to baking and decorating. We asked them what inspires their creations, and they shared some tips for success for us cookie-baking novices, too.

even Christmases ago, Dotty Raleigh decided her cookie-baking tradition needed an upgrade.
She was tired of making the same-old treats year after year, and just “throwing on powdered sugar or sprinkles” as decorations. So, she did some searching online and found tutorials on how to make professional-looking decorated sugar cookies, starting with stockings and candy canes. “I was very proud of them, except that my red icing was not very red,” she said. “It turned out pink.” Next she tried snowflakes, and soon, “I became hooked,” she said. For years Raleigh continued to practice making cookies for family and friends, for holidays and special events. All that practice paid off when, in 2013, she started Sugar Dot Cookies, selling her creations throughout the region and offering classes for kids and adults. Through it all, Raleigh learned the secrets to a great-looking cookie — preparation, and lots and lots of practice. “Practice is it — the first cookie is usually the worst, but most people are pleasantly surprised that it’s actually not as difficult as you think it is.” The other part — preparation — is what throws most people off.

“It’s very time-consuming,” Raleigh said, because first you have to bake the cookies and make sure they all come out looking the same. Then comes the icing. There are two types: “flood” icing that stays thin and covers the tops of cookies for a smooth base; and Royal icing for outlining or piping details such as stripes or polka dots. Getting the icing to be just right consistency can be really difficult, Raleigh said, and many people get turned off during this step. To lend a hand, Raleigh began offering DecorateYour-Own Cookie Kits, filled with 10 baked cookies, plus two bags of perfectly mixed icing. “All you have to do is the fun part,” Raleigh said. Thanksgiving and Christmas-themed kits are on her website right now, ready for pre-order. Custom kits for birthdays or other celebrations are also available. For Raleigh, cookie decorating is all about the fun. It’s a creative outlet for her, and she loves helping others create, too. If you’re interested in learning how to create the perfect cookie, register for a class through Sugar Dot’s website, for in-person guidance on how to get started. Then practice at home by pulling up some YouTube videos for more inspiration,

Mama Biscuit’s is another locally made product that can be found on store shelves across the country. But there are two major differences between them and McCutcheon’s. First, this company is relatively new. Founded by Lesley Riley in 2015, the company started out in a shared kitchen space as Lesley worked full-time (and still does) as an IT Project Manager. Second, they have experienced significant growth in just a few short years because of the interest received from larger companies like QVC. This fall, they also launched in Walmart stores in nine states throughout the country, with concentration on stores in the deep South and Midwest. “This is beyond my wildest dream,” Lesley said. “Three years ago, I would never have imagined I would see my product on a Walmart shelf.” They are also in conversations with

D&D at a B&B Have you ever played Dungeons & Dragons? If you’ve never played, there’s a good chance that you’ve at least heard of the 44-year-old role-playing board game. Even though I can’t say I’ve rolled the 20-sided-dice, I can say that virtually everyone I know is involved in some kind of D&D game. So, when I heard that a Dungeons & Dragons-themed bed-and-breakfast, called Adventure Away, opened up in Frederick, I was immediately surrounded by gleeful ramblings of friends waiting to run campaigns with other D&D enthusiasts.

weekend retreat where you can escape your everyday life by being literally whoever you want in a mythical fantasy world. You can plan a get together with a group of friends, or you can go by yourself and meet some new people, to play a full weekend of D&D. If you’ve never heard of this game before, you’re in for a treat! I sat down with Wayne before the kickstart of a weekend session and humbly asked him to explain a little bit about why he’s so passionate about D&D. In short, simply because it allows you to be who you want to be and there are no limits on what you can do. In fact, he says that’s the hardest part to convey to someone new to the game. It helps to think of the game as not a game with winners and losers, but a huge story or a movie and the plot is anything you want it to be: from the Battle of Helm’s Deep in “Lord of the Rings”, to “House of Cards”, to “The Italian Job” and everything in between. As a Dungeon Master, or DM, Wayne has a lot of experience crafting stories and plotlines that will fit with what story you want to tell, he’ll help you create the perfect character and even coach you on thinking and acting as your character to play as during your weekend. Creating a character is not as easy as choosing the top hat charm in Monopoly. Characters in D&D have races, classes,

equipment, stats, as well as unique personalities and backstories that can come up throughout the game. If you have a character you like to play already, no problem! Just make sure to bring your costume...or your regular troll-killing outfit.

They’ve named the rooms after types of characters, like “Chaotic Good,” “True Neutral,” and “Lawful Evil.” Throughout your stay, they provide an endless supply of snacks and delicious food from around downtown, which was part of why they thought Frederick would be the perfect spot for their business. Not only is Frederick a cozy town with yummy food and a wonderful downtown to explore, it’s centrally located. Wayne said they’ve had visitors from all over the DMV, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Both of the hosts are involved in the arts community around Frederick. You can catch both of them at the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, Apple with The Fun Company and Wayne with The Comedy PIGS. When I asked Wayne what his most memorable experience at Adventure Away was, he picked an example that I felt truly exemplified the game and what it means to those who play. He said that a family booked for a weekend to celebrate a birthday and there were three generations of players at the table. He said this game in particular was amazing to host because it was heartwarming to see everyone being truly present with each other. In a time where there can feel like there is such a divide between generations, grandparents, parents, and siblings alike all worked together to kill bad guys and fulfill quests for a full weekend and had a blast with each other. play with fire? If you’re anything like me, the answer is a firm, “No.” I mean, I like a good campfire, don’t get
me wrong, but I can’t say I’ve ever really entertained the mystical world of fire dancing, until now. If you have that need for heat in your life, I am thrilled to tell
you that Pyrophoric, the spontaneously combustible
fire dance troupe in Frederick, is starting their performance season.

Pyrophoric was founded in 2010
and continuously proves that fire is as beautiful as it can be t er r ify in g . They have all sorts of flammable toys, like hoola hoops, fans, umbrellas, pois and more, and when you see them dance about with their emblazoned instruments, they are truly mesmerizing. They have 8 eccentric troupe members with amazing pseudonyms: Soolah Hoops, Brenna Saint Bear, Inger – Steampunk Xena, Marco – Khaos, Singe, Spinning Tatsu, Torren Deadland and Bill (yes, just Bill!) each with their own specialties, from fire hoop dancing to fire-breathing, to fleshing where they trail fire along their skin (without burning themselves!) If you’re dying to catch a red-hot performance, you can get the latest details on their Facebook page. Although they haven’t officially released their 2018 performance dates, if you’re lucky, you may also catch them performing at any number of your favorite Fall and Winter activities around Frederick including: First Saturdays, The Great Frederick Boat Float, Light the Creek, Flying Dog’s Annual Merry Firkin Christmas Freak Show, Screamland Farms at Crumland Farms, or maybe even the next party you’re invited to.
