from the EDITOR To be totally honest, when I was handed the reins of The Pulse Magazine more than four years ago, my thinking was that I would stick around for a while until I found a “real job”.

Pulse felt like a relic from the early 2000’s that had somehow survived the chopping block fate that too many of the region’s other print publications had met. But I quickly realized we had the ability to cover aspects of the city that were being overlooked, or under-celebrated such as Beyond Wrestling at The White Eagle, pieces from Worcester State University’s senior thesis art exhibition, or Shaun Connolly’s insightful humor on an in-depth break down of local sports mascots. For me, Pulse Magazine stopped being “this is fine for now” and turned into the “real job” I had been waiting for.

There are countless people who helped Pulse thrive, and it’s important that they are recognized: Paul Giorgio, creator of The Pulse Magazine, for his vision and dedication to the publication for over 20 years. If not for Senior Sales Executive David Simone’s hard work through the Pandemic and uncertain print media landscape, we wouldn’t have been able to move onto this new chapter. I’m also grateful for our dedicated columnists and writers who have worked with us for years, they’ve brought so many diverse views to the magazine.

Next, I must thank both Stephanie Ramey and Cliff Rucker: Stephanie’s initial passion for the magazine caught the attention of the Rucker Investments team. They saw both the potential and importance of continuing the only printed arts and entertainment publication for Central Mass. Kate McEvoy, our new publisher, is a total dynamo and has seemingly been working 24 hours a day for months to elevate Pulse to this new level.

So what is the new chapter Pulse Magazine going to look like under Merit House Media?

You may have noticed the layout has changed, let’s get our ones up and acknowledge Pulse’s long time art director Kevin La who is beyond talented. We are so excited to bring back some familiar faces, writers who epitomize all facets of the city. Starting with radio-and-news champion Hank Stolz, whose daily podcast will soon be found on www.thepulsemag.com, and legendary Telegram and Gazette columnist Dianne Williamson, who covered literally everything in Worcester for 25 years. We are all looking forward to collaborating with media royalty, and honored that our project was compelling enough to pull Dianne out of nearly a decade of peaceful retirement.

We’re also going to be rolling out new columns to accompany our well loved favorites. Josh Lyford, former Pulse editor and Worcester Magazine reporter, is returning with Wormhole, a monthly column about music, culture and whatever weirdness that ginger icon is getting into. Casa Project Executive Director and number one dog mom Julie Bowditch will talk all things pets in Tails of the City. Stay tuned to our social media channels and our website as we share out some more exciting names over the next few weeks.

The bottom line is, Worcester is quirky and stubborn and has so many unique qualities that make it great, and we deserve a printed publication that highlights all of it, from Hedge shows at the Hotel Vernon to the glamour of a black-tie fundraiser at Mechanics Hall. The Pulse Magazine has been a part of the Central Massachusetts community for more than a decade, and will be an even bigger part of our region’s future.

WORCESTER HOT DOG SAFARI Irena Kaçi Worcester’s culinary landscape may have leveled up over the past two decades, but there’s always room for well loved classics. The Hot Dog Safari has turned the hot dog into the focus of a delightful, albeit intense, citywide competition turned fundraiser since 2011. Despite its playful name, this event that started with childhood friends, has elevated local small businesses, combatted food insecurity and has become a summer staple.

The Hot Dog Safari is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, but it began in the mid 1990s with a group of childhood friends. Worcester public school teacher, “Big Bob” Mahoney, had summers off and looked after the neighborhood kids while their parents were at work. His son, Tom Mahoney, had fond memories of piling into the back of Big Bob’s pickup truck with his brother Sean and their friends to find the best hot dogs in the city and surrounding areas. Give it Hell T BRIAN DOWD

When speaking with Taylor Nunez-Murray, you quickly learn she is many things to many people: a daughter, a wife, a mother of two, a fitness enthusiast, and an avid runner who completed the Chicago Marathon. She is even a former contributor to this very magazine you’re reading right now.

As for her career, Taylor is in her tenth year as an English and Journalism teacher at The Gerald Creamer Center here in Worcester. Not just any teacher, either, but a beloved one and the recipient of the 2026 Worcester Public Schools Educator of the Year Award. When asked about her reaction to her selection, Taylor was gracious and humble. “(It was) just really unexpected, and it was so nice, because I felt like it was a recognition of all the work that I’ve done in my time in the public schools. It was really, really kind. To be respected for my work and for my teaching just meant the world to me.”

Unfortunately, late last year, Taylor found out she was something else, too. After multiple appointments and an initial misdiagnosis, she was officially diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or ALS. Being diagnosed with an already rare disease that is most common in men between the ages of 40 and 77, despite having no genetic predisposition, came as a devastating shock to the 37 year old.

In the face of this terrible disease, an old saying of her father’s has become a motto and rallying cry for perseverance.

“My dad always said to me growing up, ‘Give it hell, T.’ And that’s it. My motto for life. When I got diagnosed, that was the first thing that he said to me. I’m not someone that takes many things lying down, for better or worse. I kind of always put up a fight, even when it’s not worth it sometimes. So that’s been our big phrase. About 12 people are walking around right now with ‘Give it hell, T’ tattooed on their bodies, including me.”

In these darkest moments, we are reminded of something else we are: loved and supported by our community. For Taylor, family, friends, colleagues, and students have shown up in spades.

“The faculty and students have been amazing. I have no words. My principal could not be kinder to me or more understanding. Even downtown administration asking ‘what do I need?’ and helping me navigate. My colleagues have made dinner for my family. My students, too, they’re so sweet. I think my school has this perception that our students are really tough but my experience has always been that they’re extremely kind and thoughtful. They have a level of understanding that you wouldn’t expect from a teenager. They’ll help me carry my things, it’s so sweet.” The kids are alright.

Her diagnosis has also introduced Taylor to a new support system in the ALS community. “You know, this isn’t a super common disease. So we’re a small group.

I always call it ‘the saddest club to have a membership to’ but it’s also the mightiest group ever. I feel like when people who have a connection to ALS hear you have ALS, they completely rally around you. They understand how devastating the disease is in its own unique way.”

The support of the ALS community has led Taylor to become yet another thing, a powerful ALS advocate.

“I’ve done some advocacy work at the ALS Association. In March, for ALS Advocacy Day, we went and spoke with state representatives about policies to better support ALS patients and their families.

Then recently, I was the walk ambassador for The Walk to Defeat ALS, which was also through the ALS Association.”

As you can see, Taylor Nunez-Murray is a lot of things. Worcester Public Schools Educator of the Year, ALS advocate, and a true inspiration. What she isn’t, is a quitter. Give it hell, T.

It’s obvious that (altogether, now) satisfaction is the death of desire, but in a monstrous case of, no, please, anything but that, Satisfaction is the Death of Desire, the debut album from Connecticut’s Hatebreed released nearly 30 years ago. While that is an interesting tidbit, it also shows a sense of perseverance (groaning is not allowed here) as their annual-ish Summer Slaughter tour hits the Palladium on Sunday, July 5. They’ll be joined by a legitimately unfathomable 12 bands including Bleeding Through, Devourment, Edict, Rose Lane and Vomit Forth. Most importantly for the interests of this column, however, is Worcester’s High Command who – if they don’t have an actual reenactment of the Battle of Bannockburn live on stage – will at least sound like it.

In a delightful surprise, Worcester’s Mountain Man shadow dropped their latest EP: FOUR at the tail-end of June and if you are already aware of the collective, then you’ve already splayed yourself to better absorb the frenzied and beautiful energy. If not, this is as good a

time as any to tune in. As one obviously intelligent and likely quite handsome listener wrote, “A forlorn march through the desolation of our modern world, FOUR is frantic feeling paced by faithful rhythm and dour urgency.” Available on all streaming platforms. Chills, yeah?

If you are a sicko (you are reading the third paragraph in a column written by an astral-projected hound dog in a wizard hat, FYI) you are legally obligated to attend The Great American Trash On Tour at Ralph’s Diner on July 2. If you aren’t a sicko, then perhaps it’s time you called Ye Olde Loser Shoppe to renew your prescription for bad vibes. Regardless, New Fear City is laying down some lunacy with no ring wrestling deathmatches that also includes live music and burlesque dancing. If you’ve ever seen Santa and Jesus vying for the top spot in a battle to the death, you already know what to expect, if not, drink some water, eat a carbheavy dinner and prepare for the best night of your life.

If you – a member of the elated multitude – find yourself downtown between 11am and 3pm on a Wednesday between the moment you read this and August 26, well you are one lucky soand-so. BRICKSTONE KITCHEN 4 WORCESTER-PROVIDENCE TURNPIKE (ROUTE 146 SOUTHBOUND), SUTTON (508) 865-8650 BRICKSTONEKITCHEN.COM The Brickstone Kitchen is a very versatile kitchen, indeed, with cuisine ranging from traditional New England seafood to Italian and back to American Regional. My dining companion and I visited them on a Monday evening that was surprisingly busy; happily, our arrival coincided with an open table, so we were seated immediately.

Though Brickstone Kitchen is located along southbound Route 146’s nonstop rush of traffic, it feels like stepping into a neighborhood refuge.

It’s not a large place; every inch is used thoughtfully for staff efficiency and customer dining. The vibe is clearly informal, and the tables around us were filled with intergenerational families and groups of friends. Customers greeted Sheila, our server, by first name for good reason: within moments of greeting us, she had ushered us into the friendly, caring world of Brickstone.

Browsing through the regular menu and its supplements, it soon became apparent that more than a few minutes were necessary to make dining decisions, so Sheila offered to take our drink orders.

When I asked about draft beers, Sheila explained there was a separate menu for them and returned with it in a flash.

Always on the watch for an interesting IPA, I was intrigued by the first one listed.

“Strong Side Brewery?” I asked.

“Oh! Everyone loves Groundwork, their IPA. Strong Side comes from the Milford area, and Dave Hughes, the founder, is such a good guy that we’re happy to offer it here.”

BERNARD WHITMORE She soon returned with our drinks and a basket of bread. My friend’s Bloody Mary was classic in every regard; the tall glass was generously laced with bits of horseradish and a skewer of celery, lime and cucumber slice.

With my first sip of Groundwork IPA, I understood the praise. It is a bright lemony amber in color, a hazy brew with mild bitterness and pleasing notes of citrus. Its relatively low alcohol content, 6.5% ABV, makes it an easy optionfor those who approach IPAs with trepidation.

The breadbasket contained moist Italian bread and, even better, slices of herbed focaccia-like bread studded with baked-in parmesan cheese. Perfect for nibbling while finalizing our order.

It’s reasonable to question a kitchen’s claim to “scratch cooking.” The moment our appetizers arrived, we became believers in Brickstone’s claim to home cooking. My friend’s Stuffed Quahog was a huge clamshell packed thick and high with a breadcrumb stuffing of minced vegetables and small chunks of clam meat.

After dousing it with a few shakes of Tabasco sauce, he calmly proclaimed, “This may be the best stuffed clam I’ve ever had.”

My appetizer, Street Corn, came from Brickstone’s “Summer of Fun” menu. Different in format from what I expected, it arrived as charred corn sliced off the cob and blended with creamy avocado, cotija cheese, finely diced onion and jalapeño peppers. It was served ‘dip style’ in a crock surrounded by green and golden triangles of crunchy fresh tortilla chips. For true summer fun, “on the cob” can’t be beat, but this version was much tidier to enjoy.

Another feature for summer dining is Brickstone’s Fried Seafood Platters, where you choose from up to four seafood options. My friend paired whole-bellied clams with scallops. They were served around a generous plate of French fries topped with a tangle of crispy fried onion strings.

The clams were huge and meaty, and the scallops were golden brown and tender. From my side of the table, everything looked perfect. When asked, he offered one recommendation: “Less salt, please!”

Choosing an entrée from Brickstone’s menus wasn’t easy, but I managed to select what must be one of their masterworks: Jambalaya.

From start to finish I relished the savory blend of Cajun spices, tomato sauce, andouille sausage, green peppers and onions. It was packed with tender strips of chicken meat and a generous portion of shrimp and came served over a bed of rice.

Like a jazz ensemble, each ingredient in jambalaya is an important soloist. Brickstone’s chef found their groove and produced culinary harmony in a dish. The smooth flavor of Groundwork IPA enhanced it.

As we approached Brickstone Kitchen that sunny evening, they were wrapping up a car show in the adjacent field. People were blissfully enjoying a perfect post-heatwave evening in the large outdoor dining area, drinks in hand, and musical entertainment was setting up. Sheila urged us to stay for a while after dinner.

Clearly, Brickstone is ready to make the most of every moment of this Summer of ’26.

THE WONDER OF IT ALL When Wonder comes to Worcester later this year, it will be the newest of seventeen sites here in the Bay State – six of which are slated to open this summer. Not yet even ten years old, Wonder has been a disrupter in the restaurant space by marrying two key concepts: one old (food hall) and one new (on-demand delivery) bundled alongside the heft of well-proven celebrity-chef brands. How do they do it? While we aren’t privy to their secret sauce, we suspect that Wonder’s ownership of the GrubHub delivery enterprise plays a key role. Either way, we’re certainly excited to have Bobby Flay, Marcus Samuels and Jose Andres waiting on our call for delivery or take-out right down the street on Gold Star Boulevard. Oh yes, and there are cupcakes too.

LEGACY: OUR DINERS HAVE IT This year the City of Worcester launched its new Worcester Legacy Business Program, designed to honor businesses that have “helped to define the fabric of our neighborhoods”. It should come as no surprise that of the first round of awardees, no less than seven of them are beloved Diners. The list includes The Boulevard, The Kenwood, Lou Roc’s, Marvin’s Corner Lunch, The Miss Worcester, The Parkway, and Ralph’s Chadwick Diner. Other food & restaurant related honorees include: Addie Lee’s Soul Food, Maria’s Kitchen and Ed Hyder’s Market were honored – as well as Jerry’s Tastee Freeze. And, a very special shout-out to the PULSE Magazine’s next door neighbor and beloved hideout, Moynagh’s Tavern. Watch the City’s website for the next call for nominations this December!

I ACCIDENTALLY JOINED A PET PARENT SUBCULTURE JULIE BOWDITCH When I created an Instagram account for my dog, Brinkley, in January 2025, I had a simple goal: preserve cute photos and videos without overwhelming my personal feed.

What I did not expect was to stumble into an entire subculture.

At first, it was harmless enough. I discovered local pet-friendly businesses, training tips, enrichment ideas, and a community of people who love their animals as much as I love mine.

Before long, however, I found myself immersed in a world of passionate opinions, endless debates, and surprisingly fierce controversy.

Adding to the confusion is a growing marketplace eager to convince us that our pets need more—more products, more subscriptions, more supplements, more gear.

Somewhere between the training videos, targeted advertisements, and influencer recommendations, it can become easy to question whether you are doing enough.

Should dogs eat raw food or kibble? Is crate training helpful or harmful? Are dog parks a

What I have learned is this: there is no single “right” way to be a pet parent.

There are certainly best practices, trusted experts, and important safety considerations worth learning about. At the same time, every animal is as unique as we as humans are. The best decisions are often made by informed caregivers who understand their own pet’s needs, personality, and circumstances.

The longer I spend in this community, the more I appreciate the people willing to share knowledge without judgment. We all love our pets. Perhaps that common ground caries far more value than “winning” the debate.

As of me writing this column, Group Stage has just started. We are now half way through the World Cup hosted in North America. The Scots have taken over Providence, Boston and Worcester, the United States had one of their most impressive starts to a World Cup ever, and the same guys who called soccer “gay” in college are now asking me questions about the game and where we should watch the next game.

I had misgivings going into this tournament. The government was not letting in parts of Iran’s team’s staff, they denied an elite referee from Somalia, and the grift involved in it all being hosted here could make anyone with any sort of moral compass queasy. But, I have to say, it all goes away once that first whistle is blown. We are not defined by our leaders, we are people who love the beautiful game. Watching 48 teams vie for the ultimate trophy, surrounded by like-minded individuals who all hate referees and want to see a spectacular goal really makes the world feel so small. In a timeline where it can feel as though we are suffocating from bad news, the World Cup (of all things!) is releasing that tension.

I hope as you are reading this the United States is still competing. I hope there was an upset from a smaller country and I hope Christiano Ronaldo has lost and never gets to win. Until then, come fund me either behind City Hall at a watch party or at Boland’s with a pint. “Ole, ole, ole!”

What I’d Order Harbor House’s Permanent Marker eighth would absolutely be the first thing in my cart. If that’s sold out, I’d happily grab almost anything else from Harbor House. At $28 an eighth, it’s some of the best value to quality flower you’ll find on any menu in the city.

Ultimately, the best dispensary in Worcester is the one that consistently carries products you enjoy. That’s why it’s worth it to explore different menus, try our new shops, and occasionally shop outside of your normal routine. This summer, consider giving one of these operators a shot. You might find your new favorite product in a place you haven’t visited before

I moved here from Ireland in 1990. I grew up in Ireland in the retail world - my Mum and Dad started the Erin Gift Store in Blarney to compliment and support our handknitting business Erin Knitwear Ltd. We all witnessed the pressures, good and bad of entrepreneurial thinking and my siblings have gone on to nurture and grow the businesses started by our parents as well as grow their own independent enterprises. Here in the States my work history includes 20+ years at the Telegram & Gazette as well as time spent in other working environments - the culmination of those years of experience is my own business.

What can people expect when they visit your store?

When you visit my store you can expect to feel like you walked into an Irish store in Ireland. In addition to being charmed by all my very carefully curated products I hope you will feel welcome and valued. I also hope you will have a little time on your hands for the chats - I like to hear the stories people bring to me which have been preserved by their families over the years - sometimes centuries.

What’s your advice for someone interested in starting their own business/best piece of advice you were given?

My advice? Blind faith in yourself, your dream and your ability to bring it to life. Do not let anyone derail what you know is right for you.

I own The Fountain in Clinton, a unique three-part business that includes a soda shop, candy store, and mobile event service. We are proud to be the first dirty soda shop in New England, serving specialty dirty sodas, ice cream, baked goods, and a wide variety of nostalgic and trending candies.

We recently celebrated our two-year anniversary and have been grateful for the support of our community. We work hard to keep our products affordable for our customers, even as the cost of ingredients continues to rise. Some items, particularly specialty candies and chocolate, can be expensive due to production and import costs, but we always strive to offer fair pricing while maintaining quality.

I earned my undergraduate degree in Public Relations from the University of Rhode Island and a Master of Legal Studies from Northeastern University School of Law. Prior to opening The Fountain, I owned and operated an interior painting company that specialized in cabinet refinishing.

While I had experience as a business owner, I had very little background in the food industry beyond spending summers scooping ice cream and bartending. Opening The Fountain was a completely different challenge, but one I was excited and determined to take on.

Why did you want to start your own business?

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to create a modern take on an old-fashioned soda shop in my hometown—a place where people could gather, connect, and make memories.

Growing up around small business owners, (my dad, grandfather, and grandmother) I understood the dedication and hard work required to build something from the ground up. After talking about this dream for years, I finally decided to take the leap and turn the vision into a reality. It has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. And one I’m still learning how to do every single day.

What can people expect when they visit your store?

We want every visit to The Fountain to create memories and spark a sense of nostalgia. Whether you’re exploring our retro candy selection, trying a trendy dirty soda, enjoying ice cream with family, induging in fresh baked goods, or picking up your candy kabob order for your celebration (another Fountain staple!), there is truly something for everyone.

Our goal is simple: to make your day a little sweeter and give our community a fun, welcoming place to gather.

In five years, I hope to bring The Fountain to other communities throughout Massachusetts and beyond. Our mission has always been to create sweet experiences and lasting memories, and I would love the opportunity to share that with even more people. Expanding The Fountain while maintaining the sense of community that makes it special is something I am very excited about for the future.
