Northampton Fireworks Spectacular to take place at the Racecourse The Northampton Fireworks Spectacular is set to take place on Sunday, 5th November at the Racecourse, lighting up the skies with an awe-inspiring display.

A

free event, organised by Northampton Town Council, attracts thousands of visitors every year with an exciting evening of entertainment planned for all the family from 4pm. Visitors can enjoy funfair rides, live music from local band Six Feet Apart and breathtaking fire and pyrotechnic performances from live performers, along with a delicious variety of food and drink stalls, ahead of a spectacular pyro-musical fireworks finale at 6pm. New for 2023 and produced by the Northampton Film Festival, the Northamptonshire Gunpowder Plot story will play on big screens, telling the tale of how history’s most infamous attempt to bring down the Houses of Parliament has links to the county and resulted in the eponymous Guy Fawkes Night. Cllr Jane Birch, Chair of the Community

Services Committee at Northampton Town Council, said: “The Fireworks Spectacular will be even bigger and better this year, and we are thrilled to bring something a little different to the event, with the addition of lights and lasers and a specially commissioned film exploring the local history of the Gunpowder plot. “The council has also worked closely with suppliers to ensure that the fireworks used are as environmentally friendly as possible. “We are looking forward to this fantastic evening and would like to thank the event sponsors Maintenance Services Electrical Ltd and Midshires Electrical & Lighting Ltd who are providing additional lighting at this year’s event.” Entry is free. Charges apply for funfair rides and food and drink stalls. For for more information visit: northamptontowncouncil.gov.uk/fireworks

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust! These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords

are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been

referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

If David Beckham did have an affair, would it be relevant to divorce proceedings? In the spotlight, the Beckham saga raises questions about alleged affairs. Since ‘nofault’ divorce’s introduction, the landscape has transformed, eliminating the need for blame. Ed Rawlins from Wilson Browne Solicitors unravels the impact and broader implications of these changes on today’s divorcing couples.

I

n a four-part TV series, titled ‘Beckham’, ‘Posh’ addressed the speculation that David allegedly had an affair while he was playing for Real Madrid. The questions is…Did he? Didn’t he? Is there any evidence, or is it all media speculation? Before 6th April 2022 adultery was a fact that could be relied upon to issue divorce proceedings – if it was admitted or there was evidence that it had taken place. However, since then ‘no fault’ divorce has been introduced. The traditional process for divorce entailed one party providing a

specific reason for ending the marriage. This often involved alleging wrongdoing (including unreasonable behaviour, adultery, or desertion) by the other party. No-fault divorces seek to remove this element of blame and instead allows one or both parties to file for divorce because they believe the marriage is beyond repair and broken down irretrievably, and it is no longer necessary for either spouse to apportion blame for the failure of the marriage. Instead, one or both spouses can make a “statement of irretrievable breakdown”. No-fault divorce has its advantages, one of many being it’s usually cheaper than the previous system, as a result of there being less litigation. Some people argue there are disadvantages, such as weakening the institution of marriage. Back to the Beckhams, and this scenario does not need to be any allegation of adultery or any other ‘fact’ to issue an application.

What about whether ‘adultery’ affects a financial settlement within divorce? It is very difficult to imagine a case where an extramarital affair would itself impact a financial outcome. There is a factor summarised as conduct that would be ‘inequitable’ to disregard, but that is relevant in only the most exceptional of cases. Such behaviour has been defined as ‘gross and obvious’, for example an assault by one spouse upon another resulting in the victim being unable to work. So, the reality is that speculation will continue about Becks, but if Posh ever wanted to issue divorce proceedings against him she could do so without having to prove or allege adultery. As to the financial settlement, they may have entered into a pre or post-nuptial agreement which could be the basis upon which those matters are resolved anyway.

Ed Rawlins

For Northampton, my mission signifies a hopeful health future – an NHS that’s resilient, receptive, and always reliable

My Commitment: To get the NHS back on its feet in Northampton

F

or many in Northampton, the struggles of getting help from the NHS aren’t distant stories. They’re tangible, everyday experiences that touch our families and neighbours. With people waiting months for hospital and mental health services appointments, NHS dentistry services drying up in the town and GP surgeries at breaking point, our NHS needs reform. It must be made fit for the 21st century. I’m profoundly committed to Labour’s mission: To get our NHS back on its feet. The NHS must be there when we need it most. From GP appointments to emergency operations, mental health support to long-term medical treatment. But right now, after 13 years of Conservative government, we’ve seen damaging cuts to services and waiting times extend from weeks to months to years. My commitments to revitalise our cherished NHS are not mere words but deeply-felt pledges: Cut Waiting Times: I am resolute in ending the distressing waits for treatments. By championing investments in cutting-edge technology, more healthcare staff and improving social care, we can significantly reduce these times. Wes Streeting, our shadow health secretary, has committed that Labour will deliver two million more appointments a year to cut waiting lists and 700,000 more appointments with NHS dentists. For our community here in Northampton, this will mean faster access to crucial care. End the 8am Scramble for GP Appointments: We’ve all experienced the stress of vying for a GP slot. My vision ensures no one in Northampton will feel that anxiety. You should have the choice, whether that’s a direct consultation or a phone discussion, without the current chaos. We’ll do this by investing in new technology, so you can book an appointment when you need it and see a GP on your terms. And, of course, we’ll sort out the doctors’ contract so they stop leaving the profession and stay to support the communities they love. 14

Tackle Britain’s biggest killers: Losing someone to a treatable health condition is a pain I understand deeply. We need to tackle Britain’s biggest killers, heart disease, cancer and suicide. I’m dedicated to elevating survival rates by ensuring timely detection, swift treatment, and thorough aftercare. We need a revolution in front-end diagnostics, identifying early signs of illness long before they cause you harm. More Care in the Community: When it was created, the promise the NHS offered was treatment for infectious disease and short-term illness in hospitals. However today, most of the NHS’s work is treating long-term ongoing diseases such as arthritis or diabetes. I’m pushing for a shift in care delivery, emphasising community-based services, keeping people out of hospital, relieving pressure on primary care services. This means our Northampton family will get the care they deserve right here, surrounded by the warmth and comfort of familiar settings, rather than enduring lengthy hospital stays. My ambition for the NHS is clear and bold. Our NHS heroes have supported us through the pandemic, despite the cuts and mismanagement of the Conservative Government. The Labour Party are not just aiming to mend the mess the Tories have made of the NHS; we’re aiming to transform. It’s about evolving our NHS to be preventive and proactive. For Northampton, my mission signifies a hopeful health future – an NHS that’s resilient, receptive, and always reliable. Under my vision, I promise that our NHS will stand strong, embodying its original promise: available for all, free at the point of need.

CHARITY

Give the gift of joy to a patient in hospital this Christmas

I

magine it’s Christmas, you’re elderly and in hospital, feeling a little isolated and alone. This scenario is a harsh reality for many elderly patients, some of whom may not receive any visitors or gifts. Northamptonshire Health Charity is launching its annual Christmas Gifts for Patients appeal, a heart-warming initiative that seeks to brighten the festive season for patients who find themselves in the hospital during Christmas. The charity supports Northampton General Hospital (NGH), Kettering General Hospital (KGH) and the Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT). Alison McCulloch, Head of Fundraising for the charity said, “Our Christmas Appeal was started many years ago to support those elderly patients who have nobody. Bringing a little joy to them on Christmas day really makes such a difference. The support for the appeal has always been incredible and we are so overwhelmed with donations of gifts that we can make sure that no inpatient in our local hospitals is forgotten on Christmas day.” The best items include toiletries, slippers and socks, dominoes, small puzzle and colouring books, sweets and chocolates. Additionally, an Amazon Wish List has been created for

those who prefer to select items for donation online. Visit www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ ls/2388BCLQ07H41 to donate something from the list. Donors can drop off gifts Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm at the charity office located at Springfield near the main and A&E entrances to NGH (Northamptonshire Health Charity, Springfield, Cliftonville, Northampton, NN1 5BE). Emma West, Patient Flow Coordinator on Becket Ward at NGH said, “The joy we see from our patients when they receive an unexpected gift makes us so happy. The patients appreciate the fact that there is such a community spirit and that as an organisation we do care that they are away from their families and loved ones at Christmas. Being poorly is not nice at the best of times but a small gift really goes a long way at Christmas!”

Jane Drew from NGH Brampton ward

LOCAL HISTORY

Ka’iulani, the last Princess of Hawaii Words by Laura Malpas

T

here’s an unexpected connection between Northamptonshire and Ka’iulani, the last heir to the Hawaiian monarchy. Her amazing life story naturally enough began in Hawaii in 1875. She was born in Honolulu, 4th in line to the Hawaiian throne, the only child of Princess Miriam Likelike and Scottish businessman Archibald Scott Cleghorn. Ka’iulani’s father was an Edinburgh Scot who had spent much of his youth in New Zealand where his father was Superintendent of the Auckland Government Domain. Aged 16, Archibald travelled to Honolulu with his father to set up a dry goods business. Despite his father dying, Archibald’s business thrived and expanded through the Hawaiian Islands, making him prominent and influential. In 1870, he became a Hawaiian citizen, and married a high-ranking member of the Hawaiian Royal Family, Princess Likelike. Five years later their only child Princess Ka’iulani was born to great celebration, as she was the only direct heir by birth to the throne. Young Ka’iulani had an idyllic childhood. She had been given a country estate, named Ãinahau, or ‘cool land’. Archibald built a home and cultivated a wonderful garden filled with plants from all over the world, with turtles and a family of peacocks roaming freely. Ka’iulani enjoyed playing there, and riding her favourite pony, Fairy. Her parents entertained many international visitors, several of whom became friends with the young princess, including the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. She was an athletic child, dancing hula and 18

practicing the Hawaiian martial art of Lua. She especially enjoyed swimming and surfing, often worrying her governesses with her risk taking, confessing that she was ‘naturally naughty’. This blissful childhood ended abruptly with the early death of Ka’iulani’s mother Likelike. The two had been close, and suddenly she was alone. As his heir, the King decided that Ka’iulani needed to be educated properly to prepare for her future as Queen. This meant travelling to England to boarding school for a suitable education, initially for a single year. The school chosen was at Great Harrowden Hall in Northamptonshire (now a wedding venue and golf club). In 1889 after a wonderful party at her home in Ãinahau, Ka’iulani left for Britain, accompanied by her older halfsister Annie from her father’s previous relationship. They were in the care of Ka’iulani’s guardian a British sugarcane plantation owner, Mr Davies. Ka’iulani was not to return home for four years. It was quite a culture shock, but very exciting for the two girls, attending concerts, visiting art galleries and local

landmarks and exploring the countryside. The thirteen-year-old princess met many celebrities and was inspired to make the most of her time, growing closer to her half-sister. Her only complaint was that English food was too bland for her tastes. Once the school term started, Ka‘iulani was in a class with other students for the first time. She and Annie studied French, German, maths, history, and English literature. The girls spent their

mornings in class, and the afternoons doing homework and playing sports such as tennis and cricket. Her first Christmas must have been exciting as she was able to see her cousin, Kawãnanakoa, nicknamed Koa, who was also studying in England. Ka‘iulani and Koa had been close in Hawaii, and wrote to each other regularly. Koa was homesick, and the weather was a trial. Ka’iulani wrote about her first

Northamptonshire winter ‘I rather like it when you can roast yourself by the fire but it is no joke out in the open air. I think I would like it moderately cold, not quite as cold as it is now’. The princess thrived at school, receiving glowing reports from Mrs Sharpe the headmistress. It was decided that she should continue her studies, but there was no more money for her half-sister to stay on. Annie left for home and was very distressed. However, Mrs Sharpe noted that Ka’iulani behaved correctly as a princess should, with self-control. That autumn, Ka’iulani received a puzzling letter from her uncle the King. He warned her to ‘watch out for enemies whose names he dare not write’. She had no idea to whom he was referring, so she wrote to ask. No answer came back, and a few months later the King died whilst visiting the USA. Ka’iulani’s Aunt became Queen Lili’uokalani, and the fifteen-yearold princess became the heir apparent, continuing her education at Harrowden Hall. It must have been hard for her to remain in Northamptonshire, but she was determined to be the best Queen she could be when the time came. However, in Hawaii, the situation was chaotic. Tensions were growing between political factions, notably from the Hawaiian League, foreign politicians representing the plantation owners, the sugar industry, and Christian missionaries who were undermining

the Hawaiian indigenous customs and practices. The Queen was managing very difficult circumstances. Life at school in Northamptonshire became more difficult for Ka’iulani now she was Crown Princess. Her letters show she was under stress, uncertain about what her future might hold. When the school year ended, her father Archibald came to visit, and together they visited London, and Archibald’s home, Scotland. Afterwards, Archibald sailed home alone, frustrating the princess. She wrote to her Queen about what was happening asking how she could help Hawaii, but the queen was not forthcoming, and told her to stay in England to continue her education. After completing her schooling, Ka’iulani remained based in England. She stayed good friends with her former headmistress Mrs Sharpe, visiting her in Burton Latimer. Ka’iulani then moved to Brighton, where she rekindled her passion for surfing on the south coast beaches. She loved being on the water again, and the bracing sea air gave her renewed energy. Today Ka’iulani is credited with becoming the ‘mother of modern surfing’. Early in 1893, she received a telegram, ‘Queen deposed. Monarchy Abrogated. Break news to Princess’. A pro-American group had pulled off a coup and overthrown the Hawaiian monarchy, hoping to create a republic. Shocked, Ka’iulani set sail for the USA to appeal to the President for help. Congress refused to

listen to the plea as it was greatly in the interests of the USA to control Hawaii. This plan succeeded in 1894 when Hawaii was declared a Republic and became a U.S. Territory in 1898. Ka’iulani made headlines wherever she went, such a romantic story of a ‘beautiful dusky princess’ fighting for her country predictably engendered much interest and racist comments, but she never stopped campaigning for her nation. She eventually returned to her beloved home, Ãinahau in 1897. Whilst out riding in the mountains she was caught in a storm and contracted pneumonia. Sadly, she never recovered, and died in 1899, aged only 24. Princess Ka’iulani never returned again to her Northamptonshire friends, but she is still remembered as a charming visitor. Today I am sure the ‘mother of modern surfing’ would have loved paddling down the river Nene, or wakeboarding at Grendon Lakes, and perhaps even swinging a golf club at her old school, Harrowden Hall, now Wellingborough Golf Club. LEGAL

Making a best interests decision under an LPA

Making ‘best interests’ decisions under an LPA often treads a delicate line between legal obligations and personal conscience. Susan Owens from Borneo Martell Turner Coulston provides invaluable insights, grounding her advice in the Mental Capacity Act. A must-read for those seeking clarity in these pivotal decision-making roles.

I

‘In practice, this can be easier said than done with difficult decisions such as whether the person should be cared for at home or in a nursing home setting, whether they should receive specific medication, or whether their house should be sold,’ says Susan Owens, head of the wills and probate team with Borneo Martell Turner Coulston. NORTHAMPTON 29 Billing Road Northampton NN1 5DQ 01604 622101 KETTERING 18 Brooklands Court Kettering Venture Park Kettering NN15 6FD 01536 523434 bmtclaw.co.uk

This article is for general information only and does not constitute legal or professional advice. Please note that the law may have changed since this article was published.

Fortunately the Mental Capacity Act provides guidance and sets out various factors that you must consider when deciding what is in another person’s best interest. It is important to follow what the Act says, and a solicitor can help you to understand your obligations under the law. Mental Capacity Act factors The key things to consider when making a best interests decision are: • whether the person is likely to regain capacity to make the decision at some point in the future; • the person’s general beliefs and values; • the person’s past and present wishes and feelings; • whether the person has made any written statement about their wishes; • as far as is possible, you must also permit and encourage the person to participate in their own decision making; and • you must also take into account the views of anyone who is involved in the person’s care. If the person is likely to regain capacity, then you should factor this into any decisions you make, ensuring that they are as temporary as is suitable for the circumstances.

f you have been asked to be an attorney for someone under their power of attorney, whether for finances or health and welfare, then they have placed their trust in you to act in their best interests at all times. This will also be the case if they did not have a power of attorney and the Court of Protection has appointed you as a deputy.

If they have some capacity to participate, you should make sure that they are given the opportunity to do so as far as possible.

decision unanimously. Even if you are acting alone, it is useful to consider the thoughts of the person’s family and friends.

How to gauge a person’s wishes and feelings

Where the decision to be made is one of a medical nature, you should request a best interests meeting with medical staff. This can greatly assist with the decision making process and help to reduce the pressure you may feel around having to make such a decision on someone else’s behalf.

Ideally, if you are appointed as someone’s attorney, you should discuss with them in advance what they would like to happen in various situations. However, this is not always possible (for example, if you are appointed as a deputy, the person will have already lost capacity). Circumstances can change over time, and questions may arise which you have not considered. Whilst any previously discussed wishes and feelings would be the most important factor, some useful guidance from previous cases in this area of law is that the following should be considered: • what was the person like before they lost capacity? • what was their job or their hobbies? • what was important to them? • what were their likes or dislikes? • did they have any specific religious, spiritual, or ethical beliefs? Involving others in a best interests decision If you have co-attorneys, you should ideally all come to a best interests

How can we help? If you are struggling with making a best interest decision or you wish to understand the law in this area a little more clearly, our solicitors can help. If you have concerns about the actions of another attorney, or any decision they have made, our litigation team can assist.

‘Socialisation while young is so very important’ A number of shocking dog attacks in the UK have placed the issue of so-called 'dangerous dogs' in the spotlight. Following some harrowing strikes by American XL Bully dogs, the government moved quickly, announcing 'Bullies' will become a banned breed. Sammy Jones spoke with Annie Marriott from Animals In Need about the need for changes in dog ownership laws - and whether it is man or beast who is responsible for these attacks...

‘D

Teddy is an XL Bully recently re-homed by Animals In Need

og attacks are devastating for victims and their families and it is clear that more now needs to be done to stop them and protect the public,’ said Environment Secretary Therese Coffee, “That is why we are taking decisive action to ban the American XL Bully. ‘This is on top of the work the government has been doing for some time with the police and local authorities to encourage responsible dog ownership and make sure the full force of the law is being applied.’ Coffey was speaking following the front-page stories that made for terrible reading – a 52-year-old man sadly lost his life in a frenzied attack, and several others had been mauled in a separate incident by the same breed, prompting Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to announce that XL Bullies would be banned before the end of this year. As a nation of dog lovers, it is a decidedly emotive issue, but is it too easy to order blanket bans on certain breeds?

Social media is rife with animal lovers asking for owners to be held accountable; ‘Any dog can be a beloved family member, or they can be weaponized. It’s not the breed...it’s not the dog...it’s the human.’ As someone who works with all types of dogs, many who find their way to the shelter after themselves suffering abuse, and occasionally showing unsavoury behaviour, Annie has had years to form her opinion. "A few months ago I re-homed a stunning XL Bully who was from Milton Keynes. He came to us as the result of a relationship breakup and he is the biggest, softest, squidgy boy you could hope to meet,” Annie said, “In fact, his new family changed his name to Teddy, which was particularly fitting for him. “In light of the negative publicity and the awful incidents I did speak to

FEATURE the family and asked if they might like to return him to us. “Clearly Teddy has stolen their hearts because they adore him and said they would never part with him. “When XL Bullies are added to the dangerous dog list they are likely to be assessed and then, provided they are even-tempered, they will need to be neutered, chipped and insured – Teddy is all of those things and muzzle training has already started. “Sadly, when they become a banned breed, if one arrives at the pound it will be euthanized – people who already own one will have to get through a tough process in order that they are allowed to keep them with strict restrictions in place.” Annie has more experience than most with dogs of all shapes, sizes, breeds and temperaments. No one can dispute the modern day rise in big, powerful dogs as status symbols and for protection, but are certain breeds more likely to act out of character? Are some canines simply ‘devil dogs’ as perceived in the media, or does the problem begin at the other end of the lead – with the owner? “It really is those on the other end of the lead that need sorting out,” Annie stresses, “Any dog has a potential to be a danger when

Before he came to Animals in Need he had a Police Order on him,” Annie explained, “He was a rescue dog and one very hot summer's day when he was out with his owner and another rescue called Ona, a stranger knelt in front of him and rubbed his ears – he took exception to that and reacted unfavourably. “But unknown to his owner, and to the stranger who shouldn't have presumed she could get so close to him uninvited, was that

he had a raging ear infection. Having his poorly ears rubbed would have caused immense pain, so of course he reacted and bit her. I would have too!” said Annie. “Because of that incident he went to a rehab kennel, but the police have decided he has to live his days out as a sanctuary dog, or be euthanized. He is safe here with us and is such a happy, loving boy. Everyone falls for him and he has his own fan club!”

it hasn’t been raised and taught properly. Essentially, it is all about taking responsibility – no-one prepared to put the effort in with their pets should open their home to one in the first place. “The most reactive dog we ever had in our care wasn’t a Rottweiler or an American Pit Bull Terrier or any other ‘big dog’ you might like to mention. It was actually a Chihuahua called Kevin! “No joke, he was particularly aggressive and went to live with a behaviourist because no-one else could cope with him.” Annie certainly doesn’t want to make excuses for the recent spate of attacks, which she says are ‘as appalling as they are tragic,’ but she isn’t in favour of a blanket ban of any breed. “I don’t think dogs are born a danger, I truly believe they are let down by humans and then

end up with behavioural issues and get into trouble,” she said, “I don’t perceive any as violent, aggressive breeds. I have a few dogs of my own who might have the potential to bite, but we simply wouldn’t let that happen – it’s about keeping the dogs and people safe, and socialisation while young is so very important. I can’t stress that enough.” Meanwhile, in a statement, the government said: ‘Owners whose dogs are dangerously out of control are already breaking the law, and we already have a full range of powers to apply penalties to them. Under the Dangerous Dogs Act, people can be put in prison for up to 14 years, be disqualified from ownership or their dangerous dogs can be euthanized.’ Annie thinks there still needs to be change, but what? Could the reintroduction of licences work, maybe?

“Something definitely needs to be put into place that works for the animals and their owners and keeps everyone safe,” Annie said, “Would licences work? I honestly don’t know; people have cars and drive with no licence, tax or insurance, so I’m not sure that dog licences would be any more respected. And who would police it? “It’s a difficult situation that needs a proper well-thought out, robust reaction and change, as opposed to a knee-jerk reaction that won’t solve the issues. “Meantime, I implore people to stop buying dogs as status symbols, or for protection. And if you have a dog, training and socialising is imperative. Putting rules and boundaries in place from the start will prevent behavioural issues later on. If you aren’t sure, seek the support of a behaviourist. It’s not something to just think about. It’s something you need to do.”

XL Bullys on the list The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 prohibits a person from owning a dog belonging to certain breeds. The XL Bully will become the fifth dog banned in the UK, joining a list that already includes the Pit Bull Terrier, the Japanese Tosa, the Dogo Argentino and the Fila Brasileiro.

Days out that e v o l e l yu

lney’s Dickens of a Christmas is a staple on the annual calendar – a one-day event that sees the town flooded with visitors. This year, the Victorian themed day falls on Sunday, December 3. Stallholders dress in the attire of the era and sell their wares in the Market Place and along the High Street with plenty of opportunity for you to seek out those stocking fillers, Crimbo gifts and treats. The Olney Centre will open its doors too, with craft fairs to tempt you. The old fashioned fair, street organ entertainers and Olney Brass Band will bring more colour and sounds to the day. At the Cowper & Newton Museum, the courtyard will be open to serve mulled wine, hot chocolate and tea and coffee (10am-4pm) and entertainment in the garden will run at midday, 2pm and 3pm. With the event proving such a hit, park and ride is a wise option for motorists – a service will run from Emberton Park and the Yardley Road Industrial Estate.

Olney will be having its usual Dickens of a Christmas on Sunday, December 3

Stanwick Lakes will celebrate Yule – The Festival of Mid Winter on Sunday, December 17, with ancient Viking and Pagan traditions at the fore, to mark the returning of the lights. Visitors will be able to explore a Viking camp, join in fireside Shamanic Drumming, take part in yule themed craft activities, and join with the torch lit lakeside procession and celebrations over in the outdoor theatre. Of course, you’ll be invited to feast too, with food and refreshments available. Festival of Mid Winter at Stanwick Lakes

FRUGAL CHRISTMAS

Have yourselves a frugal little Christmas

W

e all want to see the wonder of our children tearing open the wrapping paper to reveal their most wanted gifts on Christmas morning. It’s a chance to relive the experience we enjoyed as youngsters through fresh eyes, and it’s a joy. But with the cost of living hammering our finances, it’s simply not feasible to think that we can support Santa the way we used to. Gifts don’t have to be worth a fortune to be appreciated, and with some inventiveness you can ‘do’ Xmas on a tight budget. Remember, it’s not really that long ago that children were happy to receive a satsuma, some nuts and and some candy in their stocking! But seriously, no amount of Xmas day smiles is worth landing yourself in debt for. If you can’t afford it now, you won’t be able to afford it any easier when the bills arrive later on. But when you are shopping for gifts, never take the first price you see. Shop savvy and you can make great savings; use price comparison websites, make the most of store event days, and always zap the store card to get benefits, cash back or points. Non perishable foods can be bought gradually as part of the general weekly shop – have a Christmas food list and check in store to see when the deals are on to stock up on those seasonal choccies and boxes of nibbles. Team up with family, friends or neighbours and buy your booze in bulk – 25% off deals

48

can make quite the saving. And consider ‘own brands’ as opposed to those premium ones. You’ll be surprised by the quality on offer. Christmas decorations are sparkly and cool, but all too often, pricey! Instead, do a quick internet search for ways that kids can get creative with doilies and toilet roll tubes, coloured paper and glitter.

How about getting creative to make your own unique christmas decoration?

November 2023 | Pulse Magazine | Christmas in the County

The decorations will be a fraction of the store prices and truly unique. And don’t forget that budget shops sell all you need to colour up your house and festive tree for less. And so to that tree; will you have a real one? A plastic one? Do you need one at all? Think carefully before your purchase – will you take a real fir with roots that can become an annual part of your seasonal festivities? If you buy a plastic one, you need to think long term – please don’t use it once and send it to landfill. At this time of year, many charity shops will bring out their selection of Christmas trees and decorations at affordable prices. Start your buying experience there and you’ll be helping great causes too. We love receiving a Christmas card; a personalised message spreading festive cheer is often more thoughtful than a gift, but it’s becoming an ever more costly annual expense – with the cost of a stamp now a whopping £1.25, the days when you could afford to visit the post box with an arm full of cards is long gone. There are still many ways to send Seasons Greetings - pick up the phone, drop a text or send an email. But however you do it, be sure to reach out to your nearest and dearest, and to those in your community who might otherwise spend the season alone. The gift of kindness is the best of all, and it’s free...

Merry and bright Where and when to enjoy the Christmas light switch-ons....

I

n Stony Stratford, the big Christmas switch-on is set for Saturday, December 2 and before the illuminations comes a full day of fun. Morris Dancers will be showing off their fancy footwork and jangling as they move with a range of styles and colourful costumes being shown off around the town during the day, and it is hoped that the impressive Stony Stratford Mummers will show out too. Take a ride in the High Street and the Market Square with the fun fair, and there will be live music at Watling Fest – providing local talents a platform in Market Square from late morning.

52

November 2023 | Pulse Magazine | Christmas in the County

Red Phoenix will be heading off on a walk around the town at 10.30am and weaving stories as she goes – join her for an entertaining stroll. It is hoped that Santa will stop off on the day to see you all, and if you are looking for festive treats, you would be wise to check out the stalls set up for business on the High Street. When darkness falls over the town, the lantern parade will meander down London Road onto the High Street and into the Market Square ready for the big countdown before the lights go on at 5pm. A good old carol sing song will round off the festive fun. Keep up to date on developments at stonylights.org

The centre:mk hosts its Santa Parade on Friday, November 17

Newport Pagnell’s annual illuminations go live on Saturday, November 25. The High Street will be closed to motorists, and for one day only traffic will be replaced by a street market – try your luck on the tombolas, purchase a cheeky treat to eat, stock up on handmade Crimbo pressies and support local charities as you go. Roads will be closed between 8am and 8pm. Don’t say you’ve not been warned! In addition, an afternoon of entertainment will begin at 1pm. For all the latest news visit FB: Newport Pagnell Christmas Lights Page. The lights will shine brightly at Delapré Abbey from Friday, December 1, when the historic Northampton site will hold a festive switch on in its 19th century stables. The free event will run between 4pm and 6pm and entry is free.

In Olney, the switch will be flicked on Thursday, November 23, but there are other events around the town to look forward to too; see elsewhere in this guide for more on the annual Dickens of a Christmas event (Dec 3), and local retailers will open their doors for late night shopping on Thursday, November 23 and Thursday, December 7. In St Peter and St Paul Church, the annual Christmas Tree Festival will run over the weekend of December 2 and 3.

At centre:mk the annual Santa Parade is confirmed for Friday, November 17. Beginning at door 1 at 5.15pm, members from the cast of Cinderella - this year’s pantomime spectacular at Milton Keynes Theatre - will meet and greet families waiting to see Santa. The man in red will arrive at 5.30pm and a parade will wind its way down the length of the centre to Middleton Hall where the grotto will be declared open and the festivities will begin.

Stand tall for our trees

I

E

arly November is the best time for autumn colour in the garden. Strong winds loosened tree stakes and ties and these needed to be checked. Damage to the bark of some ornamental and fruit trees was found. Bare-root trees and roses are now available and should be stood in water before planting - liberally sprinkle mycorrhizal fungi on them to encourage plant growth. The rows of salad greens were covered by plastic cloches, which have saved them from damage by heavy rain. They are providing additions to the school’s meals. A large root of rhubarb was dug up, divided and planted elsewhere, leaving room for two short rows of broad beans, Aquadulce Claudia, to be fitted in, and a row of garlic cloves pressed in firmly, after a mulch of fresh compost has been added. In spite of a poor show this summer, I am sowing sweet peas one cm deep in pots of fresh, multipurpose compost. Pelargoniums and fuchsias, potted up from the garden, must be kept frost-free in the greenhouse or in a cool, light room. Continuing to feed the birds and keeping the birdbath topped up is an important routine. What happened to Bonfire Night? Shower, walk-in bath, or wet room? We can help you decide

C

hoosing with clients presenting with a new bathroom involves understanding your bathing needs but there are a variety of options to consider when deciding to alter your

bathroom. One option is to replace your bath with a low-level shower, this is suited to those with limited mobility and who struggle to step into a traditional bath. Slip-resistant shower trays are available in various sizes, and accessories like shower seats mean you can relax and let the water wash over you. Grab rails provide further safety and they come in a variety of modern designs, so they won’t make your bathroom feel clinical. However, some people still like having a bath to a shower so this is when we would recommend a walk-in bath. These are available in various sizes and come with moulded seats (sometimes heated), quick fill and drain options and some even have jacuzzi functions to help ease aches and pains. The third option is a wet room which eliminates obstacles with slip-resistant flooring and a central drain, making them ideal for wheelchair users and caregivers however they can be more costly. It can be overwhelming knowing which solution to choose but at AHM Installations, we have a friendly team of home surveyors who will visit you at home to discuss your bathing needs. We provide FREE quotations and visuals of how your new bathroom could look. Cherry Bomb Deep, earthy reds are having a revival thanks to the intensity of hues available across the various paint brands. Little Greene describe their Baked Cherry 14 as a sumptuous crimson hue ideal for formal dining rooms and studies. They say that the wonderfully rich pigments used to make this paint create a luxurious atmosphere perfect for use in any large space which you’re wanting to make feel cosier. Farrow and Ball purport that their Preference Red is the ‘preferred’ red of modern homes, and Paint and Paper Library offer Grenache and refer to the colour as ‘intimate and rounded’, suggesting it is combined with soft grey. Designers Guild sell Red Velvet, and yes it does look as scrumptious as the cake. It’s described as rich, dark, dramatic, and velvety; what’s not to like?!

Rosie Kinsella Interior Designer 01604 751262 www.millsandkinsella.com 60

Red is a colour most associated with passion, love, intimacy and joy. It is a stimulating colour that can energise any decorative scheme, from the most traditional to the ultra-contemporary and cutting edge. Whether you’re updating your kitchen, remodelling your living room, or adding a bit of romance to your bedroom, red is strong enough to work on its own but also works well alongside other shades. Some schools of thought suggest that red can make meat looked undercooked in a kitchen and attribute red walls to elevated feelings of hunger and increased appetite in dining rooms. Mindful of these considerations, red may, or may not work for your situation. As an interior designer, I love encouraging clients to be brave with their use of pattern, colour and texture. A bold scheme can give a small space personality and flair, and these deep moody hues suggest a scheme that’s been put together with confidence and competence. Even a small number of red accents can make a statement by warming up a cool-toned room.

hic, sultry and effortlessly stylish, cherry red is undeniably the 'it' shade of this Autumn / Winter season. We’ve been seeing it paraded on the catwalks and featured heavily on TikTok, and now, as the colder months approach, this moody hue is destined for our homes. Whether you’re looking for a few statement accessories or want to go all out with this trend, the warmth and interest of this colour will certainly add spice to your home!

www.sofa.com

As an accent colour, you could try painting an entire piece of furniture, picture frame or lamp base in your deep red. Equally, a bold plain red velvet curtain, a headboard, or painted roll top bath can be particularly impactful when positioned against a neutral or monochromatic background. For even more drama, paint your staircase, or have both the walls, skirtings, architraves, doors and curtains all in the same hue. Dark colours produce rooms that look elegant and sophisticated. If this is the look you’re after then cherry red could well be the one for you. If you go all out for red and then find that your chosen tone is too stimulating once it’s on the wall, you can soften it with the addition of wood

tones and metallic finishes in furniture and accessories. Any natural material added to a scheme that includes moody, heady tones, will provide an earthy contrast and serve to soothe the overall aesthetic. Incorporating red into your interior design scheme can create a striking and impressive look. It’s very versatile and can be paired with almost any other colour. So, if you love grey, or blue, or green, opting for a deep red does not have to preclude your favourite alternative. Interior design is all about expressing your personal style and creating a space that reflects who you are, so don’t be afraid to experiment with the power of red and see how it can transform your home into a bold and elegant retreat.

ith October comes the warm colours and crisp temperatures of autumn. While, in recent years, the celebration of autumn seems to be dominated by spiced coffees and halloween, the art world has been celebrating autumn for centuries with many of the greats - including Monet and Van Gogh - creating stunning autumn paintings that we love. Closer to home, the chill outside often encourages us to create cosy spaces inside with autumn colours for interior design inspiration. We love the rich browns, yellows, golds, reds and oranges which create warmth within our spaces. While you might create this autumnal colour scheme with decoration or furnishings, there are plenty of artworks in our gallery to help you get cosy. We want to take this opportunity to celebrate the season by focusing on some of the artists on the walls of our gallery inspired by autumn. Autumn Landscapes We can’t talk about autumn without mentioning the vibrant colours we enjoy on the leaves of autumn trees. While some artists bring us autumn landscapes that are wide and spacious, bringing us dramatic skies and jewelled foliage, others choose close, cosy moments to enjoy the detail of a place. The popular Sam Toft has given us many works which embrace the yellows and golds of autumn, however the stunning When Everything is Unfolding Just the Way it Should takes us deep into the season with its copper leaves and the comfort of huddling in shelter on a brisk day. The artist Maya brings us a different perspective, presenting us with trees stretching up to the clouded sky, leaves falling and winds changing. Animals Lovers of the English countryside - and particularly the wildlife within it - can also find an abundance of art reflecting their interests at this time of year. Again, we see the autumn colours reflected in the oranges of the fox coat, deep browns of hare or deer and exquisite patterns of birds. Jackie Morris, renowned illustrator of The Lost Words, has released some beautiful pieces

depicting animals and flowers of the season, embellished with gold leaf to bring that true autumn warmth and glow. One of our favourites is Slightly Foxed, this handsome fox dancing in the fallen leaves captures a playfulness we can’t help but admire. Debbie Boon is another artist who seems able to bring her animal subjects to life. Inspired by her local Norfolk countryside, her work features foxes, horses, rabbits and owls. The awesome stag in Contemplating draws you into its space, prompting you to consider the scene and those within it. The use of colour and light in this piece reflects autumn so effectively you can feel the breeze. Cities While autumnal colours might bring to mind landscapes and foliage, the changing light of the season can also be seen in our cities. While that might be seen in greying clouds and rain slicked streets, the softer light and shadows bring their own drama to streets and the people within them. Alena Carvalho has a great talent for bringing cityscapes to life with colour, light and detail. Her piece Autumn Rain, Trafalgar Square is a great example, with the subdued autumn light reflected back off damp pavements. This piece reflects the different shades and reflections that autumn brings, while giving us an enthralling scene to explore. The grey skies over Bath are central and captivating in Joe Ramm’s The Royal Crescent, where her quirky characters and whimsical illustrative style encourage you to wonder what the story is and where this walk might take you. As the season brings chills, we hope you’ll enjoy the warmth of these pieces and are inspired to see the glow of autumn in your own home.

ast year’s Bluetones Acoustic session at The Black Prince was fully booked way in advance, and tickets are expected to fly (see what we did there?) for their return (Nov 10) when Mark Morriss and Adam Devlin take listeners on a laid back 90 minute journey through tracks including Marblehead Johnson and Slight Return. A quick mop over the floor and wipe down of the bar and the venue will entice you in for another returning face; this time the highpriestess of psychedelic rock is slinking in. Rosalie Cunningham is a real performer and has an armoury of cool AF songs. “The band slayed with their 2022 performance which was a pure highlight of the music year calendar,” said promoter Phil Moore, “We absolutely had to have them back.” Plenty of material from Rosalie’s second elpee, Two Piece Puzzle will be lifted for the show by the lady Prog Magazine declared to be ‘one of our most delirious talents.’ Tuppeny Bunters will warm the stage up on the night.

Hard-working cross-genre punk outfit Millie Manders & The Shutup (Nov 17) are nearing the end of their current UK road trip, the perfectly titled Shut Your Mouth tour. Grinding guitars, irresistible horns and Millie’s vocal class have seen them accumulate plenty of fans and friends in decent places. Lyrically they deliberate on loss, betrayal, anger, anxiety, environmental catastrophe and political unrest. It’s safe to say they’ll not run short of things to write about then, which is helpful seeing as how the band has been working on its sophomore album, which is set for release next year. Support will come from Ramona’s Tea Party, a vivid quartet of the slightly absurd and fun who are centred around Ramona Lundberg and her witty and hearty songwriting. Society’s rejects The SoapGirls come hither on November 18. Fearless French-born sisters Millie and Mie and their energy, rawness and authenticity have earned a global group of followers who call themselves The SoapSuds. The SoapGirls write outsider anthems that are ‘androgynous, audacious and straight from the heart’ according to the press blurb, and when the politicians curtailed activities during the pandemic, these gals kept on rolling – unable to travel they played more than 400 live streamed shows, taking those SoapSuds on a world tour from the comfort of their living rooms. As creative with their look as they are with their music, these ladies also know how to

throw shapes we can’t even imagine contemplating. If you want a show to remember, this is the one to get you all in a lather! Support is coming from grunge influenced alt-mob Debris, and art-punkers The Dodo Appreciation Society, from here in ShoeTown. It’s a busy month, but before SBD Promotions pours a bucket full of gin and pulls down the blinds for a wee break there is still one more show to go – and it’s ‘fampton familiar Andy Croft delivering one of his acoustic shows. The Moons singer and Paul Weller associate will play for you on November 19 – both seated and standing areas will be on play for this date. > To book for any of the aforementioned goodies, click to sbdpromotions.com or scan the QR code >>

Roadmender tickets are going, going Gong... H e has traveled from Surrey to Osaka, from Banstead to Berlin and Norway to New York spreading his chaphop vibes, and on November 2, Mr.B The Gentleman Rhymer will be bringing his beats, rhymes and manners to The Roadmender. Expect songs about cricket, pipe smoking and high society and you’ll not be disappointed. His illustrious career so far has seen him rap for Jeremy Paxman on Newsnight, obviously, and his mug has adorned the front page of The Wall Street Journal. Oh, and The Daily Mail has called him ‘controversial.’ Not sure what to make of that one. When the chap hops it, so to speak, the venue will host a drum n bass extravaganza with two of the genres’ finest pioneers - Roni Size and LTJ Bukam (Nov 3). At the time of writing, tickets were very limited. Try with haste to bag your place. Doors from 10pm ‘til 3am for this one. Mansun frontman Paul Draper (Nov 4) will be joined by a live band to perform Mansun’s

album Six, which, incredibly, is celebrating its 25th birthday in 2023. Alabama 3 (Nov 9) made it into the home of millions of people when their track Woke Up This Morning was taken as the theme for HBO series The Sopranos, and today – decades since they first came together at an all-night squat party, the band is continuing to explore their uniquely British absurdist twist on Americana. To that end, the band releases its 14th studio album, Cold War Classics Vol. 2 this Friday (Oct 27) and the Northampton date is the opening night of an extensive tour that will culminate on their home turf, with a show at the Kentish Town Forum. Embrace marks the 25th anniversary of their debut album, The Good Will Out (Nov 10), but tickets sold out months ago, so all you good, good people without tickets won’t be able to come back to what you know this time. Instead you’ll have to sit it out at home. Heaven 17 is marking 40 years of The Luxury Gap (Nov 11) but that is fully booked too. Bradford’s Bad Boy Chiller Crew (Nov 20) whose 2020 debut single, 450, racked up more than 14 million views on YouTube, have had quite the 2023; including being shortlisted for Group of the Year at the Brit Awards. They chose to arrive on the red carpet in a horse and carriage. Their second album, Disrespectful, went straight into the chart in the No2 position – beating Adele, and coming in just behind Ed Sheeran. In September the trio released Sliding, their latest club-charged anthem steeped in

tongue-in-cheek lyricism and an addictive organ bassline, and their fourth album, Influential is set for release on November 3. Ozric Tentacles (Nov 23) bring trippy soundscapes that are so effective they manage to unite fans of prog rock, psychedelia and dance music culture. “The opportunity to put together a full live band after such a long hiatus is both daunting and exhilarating,” said Ozrics’ bandleader Ed Wynne, “One thing is for sure though, this tour will be an amazing experience to share with all our fans.” Gong’s beginnings date back to 1967 in a French commune. Since then the band and its musically diverse world have had to work through mismanagement, court cases, break-ups and rejoinings, deaths and rebirths. But the music has been constant. And so it will be when they join the Ozrics for that ‘Mender show. Irish boys The Mary Wallopers (Nov 24) issued their second album, Irish Rock N Roll at the start of October, and they have been on tour since early September, playing their way through Europe and North America. They visit Northampton at the tail end of a British stint, before heading home to wrap up the year with a 12 date tour of Ireland. Scouting For Girls (Nov 27) is another sellout and the last date of November for the venue. > For those shows with availability visit theroadmender.com or scan the QR code >>

Saphron cuts loose ‘empowering anthem’ A fter more than a decade putting pen to paper as a songwriter (her writing credits for artists including Markus Schulz, Ben Gold and Super8 & Tab have racked up an impressive 17 million streams) earlier this year Saphron dropped her debut EP Identity Crisis, and the addictive earworm, Nice Try. Now she is back with the latest single from that EP, Consent, which is out now. Musically, the track, featuring rising rapper Bekah, is a fusion of trap, rock and rap, and lyrically it adds to the conversation around sexual consent, at a time when the subject is once again in the headlines. Speaking about the delivery, the Northampton-based lady says it is ‘an empowering anthem that encourages listeners to reflect on their perceptions of consent and take control of their own narratives.’ “The release of our track comes at a time when the issue of consent is front and centre but even without recent allegations coming to light, this is a hugely important topic. Having worked in the music industry for over a decade, I’ve spoken to many other artists about consent and how boundaries can be crossed,” Saphron said. “Bekah and I wanted to create a song that not only entertained but also sparked important conversations. Consent is something we should

all be talking about, and we hope this song encourages people to reflect on their own experiences and beliefs,” she said. Bekah added: “It’s a declaration that everyone deserves to be heard, and their boundaries should be respected without question.” A remix of her recent single Nice Try was cut loose earlier this month, and is doing well – the

original made it onto airwaves of national and local radio outlets and hit the charts in her home country of Sri Lanka. > Keep up to speed on all things Saphron by following her on Twitter, Insta and TikTok: @saphronmusic or connect on FB: saphronmusicuk

MOTORING

Build your dreams ADAM TUDOR-LANE reviews the electric BVD Atto 3

I

n the ever-evolving world of electric vehicles, a Chinese giant named BYD, which stands for ‘Build Your Dreams,’ has made it to UK shores. BYD is one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers and has sold nearly 200,000 EVs each month in the first half of 2023 alone. With 600,000 employees, including 50,000 engineers, BYD’s commitment to innovation is pretty clear. Their first assault on the UK market is in the form of the Atto 3, a compact-to-medium-sized electric crossover. Think Kia Niro EV, smaller than a VW ID.4 but larger than a Peugeot e-2008. Starting at £37,000 for the ‘Active’ model, with the ‘Comfort’ at £500 more, and the rangetopping ‘Design’ at £39,695, the Atto 3 is keenly priced. While the Atto 3’s exterior may not be groundbreaking, its electric identity is evident with a blanked-out grille, full-width front and rear lighting, and metallic rear side panels. Inside, vibrant colours and playful design elements target a younger audience. And despite its size, the cabin offers ample space, with a 440-litre boot.

Performance-wise, the Atto 3 accelerates smoothly, reaching 0-62 mph in 7.3 seconds. It handles UK roads comfortably, though the brakes lack modulation ending up feeling rather digital – on, or off. All models are powered by the same 60.4 kWh battery, which provides up to 260 miles of range, and it comes with a heat pump as standard which will help increase efficiency in our chilly winter months. In terms of pricing and features, it competes well against established rivals. BYD’s “blade battery” is a standout feature, it uses a cell-to-pack design that maximizes usable battery content. This approach allows the Atto 3 to use a less energy-dense chemistry, saving costs, enhancing durability, and reducing environmental impact. Additionally, the Atto 3 integrates the motor, power electronics, charger, AC-DC inverter, DC-DC converter, and battery management system into a single unit, reducing weight and complexity. So the BYD Atto 3 may not boast the most eye-catching exterior, but it offers a compelling package. Its unassuming design conceals a funky and spacious cabin, making it a practical choice for families. While it doesn’t lead in battery capacity or range, it strikes a balance that is more than enough for most drivers. High levels of standard kit further distinguish it from rivals. The question now is whether the British market will embrace the BYD Atto 3. Historically, the UK has welcomed foreign

FACTS AT A GLANCE Top Speed: 99 MPH Performance: 0-62 in 7.3 seconds Battery size: 60.4 kWh Range: Up to 260 miles manufacturers, like Toyota and Kia, before they gained wider recognition. MG, another Chinese brand, is also doing incredibly well in the UK. With competitive pricing and ample features, the Atto 3 aims to secure a place in the British electric vehicle landscape. he O’Hara household was in turmoil. Boxes of belongings, with nowhere to go, littered the house. The dogs were permanently confused, as was I. Moving home isn’t supposed to be this complicated, perplexing and frustrating, surely? Panic mode had been engaged due to an abrupt chain collapse. We were suddenly up a water course without a propulsion device, and those waters were choppy. It felt like white water rafting, blindfolded while riding in a dinghy slavered in grease. In addition, the water was corrosive hydrochloric acid. It wasn’t a great feeling. We needed to secure a fresh purchaser to replace the original who was now bereft of their own buyer and consequently lacking any financial ability to continue. There was a looming possibility that everything would need to be unpacked so as to return the house to a presentable condition. This was a task that was, at best, rather unappealing, causing a couple of questions: where do all the flattened empty cardboard boxes go, and would it result in our being overwhelmed by the foaming devils swamping our slippery raft?

As it happened, a substantially cheaper, bigger property, with an extra bedroom, became our new target. In the event, a new offer was secured and everything looks fine. The vendor of the original house we were aiming to buy had promptly withdrew the second he heard we had hit an obstacle. As we had anticipated that may be his reaction, we had immediately arranged to view possible replacements. As it happened, a substantially cheaper, bigger property, with an extra bedroom, became our new target. This time around, we had a First Time Buyer, along with conditions written into the sale to ensure a speedy conclusion. The original vendor seemed to have misread the housing market because they relisted their property £3,000 up from the initial listing that had attracted us. Probably as

a result of having been spoken to by their estate agent – who may have spotted that our own property had quickly re-sold after a price adjustment – the vendor then re-offered their property to us at £5,000 lower than we had originally negotiated (£10,000 lower than it re-entered the market). We declined their approach, telling them that with the reduction they were still more expensive than the property with that extra bedroom and greater space. They immediately reduced their listing to what we had rejected, but it was too late – we had seen better and cheaper. Interestingly, were it not for his knee-jerk reaction, there is a distinct possibility that after the hiccup we experienced, we would very probably have blindly stuck with the original deal. He would have realised £5,000 more than he was now asking, having completed instead of currently sitting on an unsold property languishing on the housing market. The happy thing is that we get a bigger house with an extra bedroom (a study for me!), more space, and all for nearly £10,000 less than were prepared to pay right up to the point when he reacted the way he did. Will we be pleased by the end? Watch this space! Phil O’Hara

HOWARD PARKER

Flavour of the Times - It’s that Gunpowder, Treason and Plot time of year! Scorpio time, beginning with Mars and Mercury both close to the sun in that sign. It’s a striking symbolic image of unseen undercurrents with potentially far-reaching consequences: Guy Fawkes and his gang deep in the bowels of the Parliament building, moving barrels around, seeking to overthrow the existing order. Perhaps we should expect nefarious deeds this month too, carried out in secret, in the dark, eventually coming to light? By all accounts, things are on the move again this month. Pluto is direct and Saturn joins it now so there is bound to be progress of a sort: things coming to light that have been kept under wraps.

THE ASTRO-GUIDE

SCORPIO October 24 – November 22

PISCES February 20 – March 20

CANCER June 22 – July 23

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22

ARIES March 21 – April 20

LEO July 24 – August 23

Too clever by half? You may think you’ve got things well worked out in your head, you may feel you understand the deep, dark and Machiavellian manipulations of others, but there is a good chance that you’ve got it wrong. There’s many a twist in a cat’s tail and you could be caught out by circumstances not being quite what you thought they were.

You are not good at clarity and structure, preferring to go with the flow, but as Saturn turns in your favour this month you may find that turning your back on past events becomes easier. You can start to plan ahead a little. There are still issues to work through and your emotions may feel deep but Venus and Neptune working together will help you handle this.

Mercury moves into Sagittarius this month which may cause many folk to go out and hit people with their theories about the world wide conspiracy (you know: the one that isn’t really a conspiracy at all!) There’s a whiff of fundamentalism in the air so try hard not to berate people who may not agree with your own personal ‘truth’.

You will want to ‘get stuff done’ in your usual busy way, but it’s the wrong time of year for you to achieve this. This month is intense emotionally, and while you would rather blast your way past this, you probably should ease your foot off the accelerator and take your time. It’s probably a good idea to appreciate that others do not have your energy, so understanding that is key.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 20

TAURUS April 21 – May 21

AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19

GEMINI May 22 – June 21

You will need to have your feet firmly planted on the ground this month. There is a lot of hidden issues that are starting to bubble up, perhaps in your closest relationships, so I would tend to slow down and deal with things as they occur one by one. It won’t be easy but my hunch is that most of what occurs is resolvable. Not easily but it is do-able.

Have you learnt the harsh lessons of earlier this year? Pluto has turned to direct motion so at last you can move cautiously forward. There is still clearing up work to be done for the real growth to occur but now is a time for absolute honesty, particularly with yourself. Delusions can be laid to rest so that you can see yourself in the cold light of day.

People may say that you are always full of airy, fairy ideas and maybe there is some truth in that, but this month may make you aware that many of these are born of the passion inside you for a better world. You may feel more intensely emotional than usual, and you may find it harder than to hang onto your habitual, rather detached rationality.

Venus moves out of Virgo into Libra on 6th, which will ease health matters and other everyday concerns. At least you will feel you can communicate your feelings a bit better. Nonetheless, it’s all a bit intense out there so your breezy, friendly disposition may not be appreciated by everybody. Look out for folk who are in need of a bit of reassurance!

SOLUTIONS

You are bound to be affected personally by some if not all of the massive changes that are taking place this year. An astrological reading of your chart can forewarn you about how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you on a personal level during 2023, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. This is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year. Not much action for Virgos this month, although you will feel supported by Saturn going direct again in Pisces. This will allow you to resume restructuring your life, bringing it under more control. Less is probably more, so you may experience more benefit from doing less better. Pay attention to family and people around you. Your advice is almost always sound.

LIBRA September 24 – October 23

Venus arrives in your sign early on in the month and is there all month, so that should feel pleasant in a number of ways. Finances and investments may look up or at least come under some control. In the background, though, it’s a violently unfair world out there so fighting for justice and human rights may be something you may wish to get involved with.

Scorpio squares up to Leo this month bringing an unwelcome intensity to your life when you would rather be enjoying yourself. Pluto is moving forward now so some intractable issues, perhaps involving children, are potentially solvable now in a way they seemed not to be before! A love interest is probably not going anywhere so it may just drift out of your life. On the other hand, there is some creative potential this month, so perhaps a new hobby or interest may appear for you.
