CHARITY
Tee off at Charity Golf Day and help enhance facilities for local NHS hospitals
Calling all you avid golfers! Join Northamptonshire Health Charity for an un-fore-gettable day at their 7th annual Charity Golf Day on Thursday 8th September. The independent charity, which supports local NHS hospitals and community services across the county, are looking for teams to help raise money towards their two current major appeals.
The charity team are working hard with the local community to raise funds for a new outside play area for the children’s wards at Northampton General Hospital. For a child, being able to play whilst being treated in hospital is really important for their recovery as it is reassuring and familiar, enabling children to express their feelings and anxieties.
The funds raised from this year’s Golf Day will also benefit the Twinkling Stars appeal for the new maternity bereavement suite at Kettering General Hospital.
Lead Bereavement Midwife, Lisa Drummond, said: “Each year we care for up to 100 families who suffer the heartbreak of losing their baby… While we work very closely and supportively with parents in this situation, we know that our facilities really let us down and we want to change that.”
At present, parents experiencing this devastating loss are in the delivery suite itself. They hear babies crying and it can be unavoidable to see a new mum with her baby. Amongst the new facilities, funding from the appeal will create a new bereavement room as well as family room that is entirely separate from the delivery suite.
Last year’s event also supported the two appeals and raised a fantastic £5,900, meaning £2,950 for each. Sign up your team of 4 and take part in this year’s golf day and you will be helping to make a huge difference to people across the county.
The winning team from last year’s Golf Day Crown Business Finance
It costs £260 for your team of 4 golfers and there will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd teams, nearest the pin and longest drive. Hole sponsorship is also available. For more information and to sign up please visit the charity’s website https://northamptonshirehealthcharity.co.uk/

charging point, increased soundreducing insulation, and an air source heat pump, which could aid in reducing energy bills. Complete with a private rear garden and private parking, prices for The Olney start from £345,000.
There is also a range of threebedroom Thornton homes available, with a spacious open-plan kitchen/ dining room to the rear with doors leading to the private garden. Ian Delaney, resident at Hayfield Walk, said: “I have compared the energy consumption we are using at our new home at Hayfield Walk with our previous home. In both cases, the houses are four-bedroom detached, and we are now using 10 per cent less energy.
“Our house is set up for the future, being powered by an air source heat pump. This is working well, as the house is well insulated and retains the heat, with independent temperature controls in each room. We have two electric cars, so the charging point installed as standard by Hayfield is well used. I am very pleased to have moved to such a good quality home, with flexible heating and reliable car charging.”
The Hayfield Walk show home is open seven days a week from 10am – 5pm. It is located off Castlethorpe Road in Hanslope, MK19 7HQ. For all enquiries, please call 0800 161 5488, or email Hayfieldwalk@hayfieldhomes.co.uk. Alternatively, you can register online at www.hayfieldhomes.co.uk.

Planning your legacy through charitable giving in your will
There are many reasons why someone might choose to leave money to charity in their will. Tax planning may be a key incentive, or it could be that a person does not have any close family members, and some may simply have strong feelings about a certain cause.
‘Last year, Fisherman’s Friend heiress, Doreen Lofthouse hit the headlines when she left £41.4 million from her family’s fortune to the Lofthouse Foundation.’ Susan Owens, Solicitor explains ‘Doreen contributed generously to causes close to her heart throughout her lifetime and leaving such a significant sum on her death was designed to allow the foundation to continue her philanthropic work.’
Susan explores the key motivations for charitable legacies and highlights the benefits.
Charitable gifts are a great option for those without close family If you no longer have any close family or friends, you might not want your money to end up with distant relatives you never speak to or see. If you find yourself in this situation, a gift to charity could have more meaning to you.
Making a will in which you clearly set out your wishes is the only way to ensure that any charities can benefit from your estate. If you die without a will then the predetermined intestacy rules apply, and these never provide for money to pass to charity. Even if you leave no distant relatives, intestacy will mean all your assets end up being left to the Crown.
Creating a lasting personal legacy with charitable gifts Leaving any sum to charity under your will allows you to ensure that you are remembered for the causes that mean the most to you. for revitalising her hometown of Fleetwood in Lancashire. Not only will the donation benefit those in the area, but locals have also called for a memorial to be erected in Doreen’s honour.
Whilst not everyone who leaves money to charity ends up with a permanent memorial, charities are grateful for any sums they receive and your legacy will live on in the meaningful work they are able to provide because of your gift, whatever size it may be.
The effect of charitable giving on inheritance tax For many, tax saving is not the key consideration for leaving sums to charity, but it is usually a welcome side effect.
Any gifts you leave to charity in your will pass free of inheritance tax. This reduces the value of your estate by the amount of the gift, leaving a smaller pot to fall subject to inheritance tax.
In addition, if you leave 10 per cent or more of your estate to charity the remainder benefits from a reduced inheritance tax rate. Inheritance tax calculations and tax-planning is complex, and it is advisable to seek advice before finalising decisions based on tax.
How can we help? If you wish for any of your assets to pass to a charity close to your heart, the only way of ensuring this happens is to include clear instructions in your will. Making a will allows you to control how your estate passes when you die, including specifying charitable gifts, whilst making sure everything passes in the most tax efficient way.
