Flagship fundraiser rides again for Cynthia Spencer Hospice Cycle4Cynthia, the flagship fundraising event organised by Cynthia Spencer Hospice Charity to raise money to support the care provided by the hospice, is set to take place at the Althorp Estate in September.

L

ast year’s event raised more than £40,000 and the organisers are hoping to top that total this year.

Event organiser Sarah Denston explained some of the changes that have been made to offer more choice to riders, including a new route “We have planned to add a ten-mile route for some time as we know many of our younger participants have wanted to ride this distance and we are very pleased that our hosts, Althorp have helped make this possible.”

There will be a massage station at the finishing line - “we are sure will be very welcome to our riders when they have finished their routes,” says Sarah. There will also be a bouncy castle, face painting stall and other attractions.

Team Rawsthorne, who raised £1,937 in memory of Tom Rawsthorne, who passed away in 2020 after a long battle with cancer, came out as the top fundraising team at the 2021 event.

Tom and his brother Sam had taken part in the Cycle4Cynthia ride back in 2013 when Tom

had first beaten his cancer. Sadly it returned and Tom passed away in March 2020, after receiving care from Cynthia Spencer’s hospice@ home team.

“It is incredible what the nurses do,” says Sam. “It is so important at that time, especially near the end as it is very stressful for families so making sure someone’s at ease. It is massive, ??? it really is.

“The hospice is something everyone in Northampton can relate to and connect to so we did not have to do a lot of banging on doors to raise money. We shared our fundraising page on social media and with help from friends we spread the word to reach a great fundraising total.

“A team of us representing Tom will definitely be signing up for this year’s Cycle4Cynthia too.”

Cynthia Spencer Hospice is calling for as many people as possible to get on the bikes this year.

“The last two years have been extremely challenging for our charity to ensure we are still able to support the amazing care

that the hospice provides to the people of Northamptonshire,” says director of income generation Anita Frith. “We are still recovering from the effects of the pandemic and what we really need is the support of the people of Northamptonshire to help the hospice, just like the hospice has been there for them and their families over the years.”

The hospice is looking for participants to commit to raise at least £250 each. “If everybody manages this, the total fundraising will make a huge impact on our annual fundraising for the hospice,” says Anita.

‘Your life will be worth living again’ Feeling trapped in a relationship built on violence and manipulation, Hannah Martin was terrified and scared that she wouldn’t be believed if she sought help. But the brave Northampton lady made one phone call that changed everything. Now she is sharing her story to encourage others to reach out. She spoke with Sammy Jones...

W

hen she first met Hayden Wykes, Hannah was raising a young baby on her own.

The 32-year-old said she was ‘happy, but vulnerable,’ and when she met Hayden he made her feel special.

“He was everything I could have hoped for and seemed really interested in me, but I now know that he saw me as vulnerable and that’s what he used to get into my head.

“He was just sussing me out, like a prey I suppose...” she says, her voice faltering a little, It took six weeks before the first push came.

“It started off with a little push here and there, and escalated to a punch in the arm or leg, but he would always say to me, ‘I know not to punch you in the face, because that’s where people can see.’”

Having told everyone how happy she was with her new romance, Hannah felt unable to tell friends and family what was happening. “...because I was embarrassed,” she says.

Her silence allowed the abuse to continue, and it worsened with time. Hannah was living in constant fear, and anything would provoke an assault.

“He would usually be most violent when he’d been drinking. I could be looking at the floor and he’d say, ‘why did you roll your eyes at me,’ and then I’d get a whack. Afterwards he would make me feel that it was my fault, and I truly believed that.”

At one point, the physical violence she was subjected to resulted in a burst ear drum.

“Because of the injury, medical professionals had already twigged what was going on, but he made me feel like if I said anything, my son would be taken away from me, or I wouldn’t be believed, so I brushed it under the carpet.”

Hannah maintained her silence, but her mental health was buckling under the pressure.

“I like to think I’m quite a smart girl, but the way he manipulated my brain was something

I’d never experienced before. The complete mind control was worse than the physical violence, and had the most traumatic effect on me,” she told Pulse, “I would be quick to make excuses for what he had done.

“It’s mentally exhausting, you are pulled in every direction and every ounce of energy is drained from you. I don’t ever want to feel like that again. Your brain is battered every day, and I know now that it could happen to anyone.”

There was a period when she broke free from the relationship, “...but he would always find another way to contact me, and the abuse continued. Several times he told me to kill myself.”

Cut off from friends and family and stripped of her confidence, she heeded those vile words.

“Unfortunately I did take an overdose and did have to go to hospital, but he turned up there pretending to be the knight in shining armour.

“He spoke with my family, picked up clothes for my son... I had no control of anything in my life.

“At that point I thought ‘no-one will believe me now. Whatever happens is my own fault.’

Hannah took him back. It’s something known as a ‘trauma bond’ that sees the victim return to the abuser: “I didn’t realise what he was doing. I thought he was coming to look after me, but it was this love bombing cycle

DOMESTIC ABUSE of abuse, then he would start to get agitated, then aggressive for a few days and then there would be a violent outburst, and the cycle would begin again.”

During one prolonged attack, Hannah suffered three hours of abuse at the hands of the man who should have been her protector.

“He was drinking and I could see him getting agitated so I removed myself from the room he was in and went upstairs, and the attack just happened and he just started laying into me,” she said.

“Because I was being too noisy, and telling him to get off me, he put his hand over my mouth and closed my nose,” her voice falters and she breaks down, “He was saying, ‘Do you want me to kill you?’”

The attack left Hannah in agony with broken ribs, but incredibly she didn’t go straight to hospital.

“I knew my ribs were broken, but he didn’t want me to go to the hospital because he thought I would tell somebody. He let me go to the hospital four days after.

“The pain was on a par with labour pain, and because I wasn’t breathing properly, I developed a bad cough.”

At the hospital, Hannah still couldn’t bring herself to tell anyone what she had been subjected to, but once she returned home, she knew she had to escape the abuse for good.

“I knew if he was to hurt me again I wasn’t going to be here anymore. I had to make a really quick decision. I had PC Gina Anderson from Northamptonshire Police working my case. She knew something was going on because reports had been made by neighbours. I had her number and messaged her really quickly, while he was sitting next to me.”

I am so desperate to make a difference and I know I will.

This abuse isn’t spoken about enough and I am set on helping people get the confidence to come forward.

Petrified that Hayden would discover the text during one of his frequent checks of her phone, she deleted the message straight away.

“I texted and said ‘do not reply to this message, but I need you to text me at 10am in the morning because he is going out then,’ and she did,” Hannah says, her voice cracking with emotion.

“She rang me and he was arrested and remanded.

“Getting the police involved meant going into the unknown and it was scary, but I literally had no other option.”

Wykes was jailed for almost four years, and Hannah is now sharing her story to encourage others – male or female – living in similar situations to break free.

Furthermore, she is making a difference – she is working with Northampton Domestic Abuse Service to educate girls in schools

that coercive control and physical abuse is never acceptable.

“I am so desperate to make a difference and I know I will,” she says resolutely, “This abuse isn’t spoken about enough and I am set on helping people get the confidence to come forward.

“To be able to speak to people like myself who have been, or who are going through the same thing is really empowering.”

What would you say to someone wanting to break free from an abusive relationship today?

“Trust your gut. If you think now is your time to get out, then get out because you will be believed by the police.

“You just have to have a little bit more fight in you,” she urges.

“I can promise you that your life will be worth living again. I am back to my former self, if not a bit stronger. My confidence is back, and I’m

not the person I was when he did what he did,” she says, and you can hear the positivity in her every word.

She has found love again too – real love.

“I’ve met someone new, and I am treated like an absolute princess. I feel completely loved and adored and I never thought I would feel like this again.

‘Please come forward we will believe you’ When PC Gina Anderson filled out her application to Northampton Police, she had more motivation than most, writes Sammy Jones.

“H

aving been in an abusive relationship myself in the past, I knew I wanted to help people suffering from domestic abuse. It is such a complicated area, but one which I always wanted to be involved in. When the opportunity to join the domestic abuse team presented itself, I jumped at it, for me it was an exciting moment in my career.”

PC Anderson joined the specialist team after two and a half years as a uniformed response officer.

The statistics make for sobering reading.

Every week in England and Wales two women are killed by a current or former partner.

“It is statistics like these that motivate me to do the work I do as it is only by tackling domestic abuse reported to the police robustly that these statistics will change,” PC Anderson told Pulse, “We want people to have confidence in reporting to the police, so we can intervene earlier to keep them safe.”

And she is keen to stress that this is not an issue only faced by women – one in three victims are male.

“It is also thought that men are less likely to tell someone or report to the police when they are being abused. Northamptonshire Police want to encourage anyone suffering domestic abuse to come forward, regardless of their gender, we are here to help.”

But as Hannah’s story described, the victims are stripped of their confidence, scared of what will happen to them, and having been isolated, they often feel that noone will believe their story.

“Hannah is truly an inspirational woman,” PC Anderson said, “To see how far she has come from when I first met her is a testament to how strong she is. Hannah’s case was shocking in that the abuse she was suffering was both mentally and physically very severe, and she had become bonded to her abuser through the trauma she had been through.

“The abuse Hannah endured was not black and white. Domestic abuse very rarely is. It can be extremely complex.

Love should lift you up and make you feel safe and happy, it shouldn’t make you feel anxious, fearful and controlled.

“If someone is suffering domestic abuse in any form, whether that be emotional, mental, financial or physical, or they aren’t sure if their relationship is abusive, I would urge them to reach out.

“I know from my own personal experiences and from working with survivors of abuse that there are many reasons why people may be reluctant to come forward. There are safeguarding measures we can put in place during investigations to keep you safe, and we will work with you on an individual basis as every case is different.”

And, even if you aren’t ready to take that step straight away, there are still places, and people, that can help.

“There are amazing support agencies out there, such as the Sunflower Centre, Women’s Aid, Refuge Against Domestic Violence and National Centre for Domestic Violence.

“They are always there to talk, and can offer advice and support, or reach out to a friend or family member, or even your GP. Making someone aware of your situation is the most important step in keeping yourself safe.”

The impact of domestic violence can be truly devastating, and is wide-ranging.

“In the short-term survivors of abuse may become more withdrawn, stop communicating with or seeing friends and family, their work can suffer or they may stop working entirely to try and hide the abuse. They become isolated, leaving them vulnerable to further abuse,” PC Anderson explained.

“In the long term it can continue to impact their ability to create and maintain healthy relationships, their ability to feel safe in social situations and it can shape how they see the world.”

It’s anything but a nine to five job for PC Anderson either: “Investigations mean immersing yourself into someone’s world, you learn the most personal details about people, and study the worst moments they have been through.

Hearing from survivors the abuse they have been subjected to, and visually seeing the impact that has had upon them, can leave an imprint on you and stay in your thoughts when you go home at the end of the day,” she admitted.

On behalf of Northamptonshire Police, PC Anderson has some final words of advice for anyone wanting to escape an abusive relationship: “Love should lift you up and make you feel safe and happy, it shouldn’t make you feel anxious, fearful and controlled,” she said.

“If you are suffering in a relationship, please come forward. You deserve better. We will believe you.”

Early-bird entry open for Northamptonshire Health Charity’s Superhero Family Fun Run

A

s we well know, not all superheroes wear capes and this July you can be a superhero yourself by taking part in Northamptonshire Health Charity’s first-ever Superhero Family Fun Run at Wicksteed Park in Kettering.

Northamptonshire Health Charity is the independent charity supporting three local NHS Trusts in Northamptonshire by funding projects and initiatives above and beyond what the NHS provides. The charity’s mission is to enhance patient care and experience and support NHS staff wellbeing.

Open to all ages and abilities, the 5K event is taking place from 10am on Sunday 3 July. It can be a fun day out for all the family, including your four-legged friends! Whether you choose to run, jog or walk the distance you will all be superheroes to our local NHS teams.

A smoother path to divorce from April 2022 O nce you have decided that your marriage is over and you have taken the first step towards divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership, most people would like to be able to complete the formalities as quickly and smoothly as possible. However, the historic laws of divorce have meant that the process could often be confrontational, and one partner could refuse to cooperate.

Such was the situation in the recent case of Owens v Owens where the argument centered on whether Mr. Owens had behaved in such a manner that it was unreasonable to expect his wife to continue to live with him. The court found that his behavior did not meet the legal standard for unreasonableness, and the only option for Mrs. Owens was to wait until they had separated for five years. Mrs. Owens could not get a divorce sooner without proving that her partner was at fault, as he did not agree to the divorce.

‘From April 2022 you will be able to apply for a no-fault divorce in England and Wales, and this will be welcome news for many who seek a divorce without having to point the finger of blame at their former spouse,’ says Dr. Diana Rose, Partner, and family law expert at BMTC Law. What will change in April 2022?

The old laws are being replaced with a new law, meaning you will be able to apply for divorce by simply citing that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. It will not be necessary to wait years, or to have to blame your former spouse.

If you both agree to divorce Under the new law you can apply for your divorce jointly.

Both of you can give notice to the court and sign, as part of your application, a joint declaration confirming the irretrievable breakdown of your marriage.

If one spouse disagrees Either of you can give notice to court and sign a declaration as part of your application that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. It will not be necessary for your spouse to agree to, or to sign, the declaration. Your application must then be sent to your spouse.

Removal of objections Finally, there will be less ability to defend a divorce. At present if you do not wish to get divorced then, as Mr Owens managed to do, you can defend yourself against

the accusations of fault. Alternatively, you can contest the length of your separation.

Under the new simplified legislation these bases are removed and defending a divorce will now only be possible on very limited grounds.

Is this a quickie divorce?

The changes include a 20-week cooling off period to provide an opportunity to change your mind, between having applied for your divorce and before the conditional order is made.

After the conditional order has been made, you must wait a further six weeks to obtain your final order. Bearing this in mind, it will not necessarily be a ‘quickie divorce’ but is certainly quicker than waiting two or five years.

Moving on Eliminating the need to find fault will undoubtably speed matters up in some cases and will reduce potential conflict.

It can often be extremely upsetting and even provoke anger to read the allegations which have been made against you in a divorce petition. Removing the need to prove fault will remove some stress and acrimony for many couples.

Having a less contentious divorce should help to maintain better relations and communications which will ultimately benefit everyone. It can greatly assist children to come to terms with their new life, if they can see their parents communicating amicably.

Reduced costs The benefits also include keeping costs down and saving on court time. Under the old rules, a defended divorce was often expensive and timely. The new rules will mean defended divorces will become almost unheard of.

It is important to note that in most cases the lion’s share of legal costs arises in relation to disputes over the financial separation rather than the actual divorce.

think many living in Northamptonshire will have heard the name John Dryden at one time or another. As one of Northamptonshire’s most famous sons, there are many buildings and institutions bearing his name, but who was he? And what made him so highly esteemed by society, yet ignored by his Northamptonshire family?

The Dryden family was established in Northamptonshire around 1550, when the first John Dryden from Cumbria married a wealthy Banbury heiress, Elizabeth Cope. They settled at Canons Ashby near Daventry, building a manor house now under the care of the National Trust. The couple were fervent Puritans, and against the old Roman Catholic Church and the trappings of monarchy.

This family stance remained consistent through subsequent generations.

Those relations who dared to practice Catholicism were excluded from the inner circle of the family. Our John, John the poet, was the great grandson of the first John Dryden, and born in 1631 in the Northamptonshire vicarage of Aldwincle, where his maternal grandfather was the parish priest. It seems that the Aldwincle Drydens were on good terms with their cousins at Canons Ashby, and young John in time developed a romantic attachment to Honor, the eldest daughter of his Uncle, Sir John.

Young John grew up in troubled times.

By the time he was ten years old England was in the grip of conflict between the demands of the Roman Catholic monarch Charles I and Parliament.

His family, also Parliamentarians with Puritan leanings, moved to Titchmarsh, just across the Nene valley.

Young John, clearly a bright boy, was sent to Westminster school with a scholarship where he studied the classics. He published his first poetry while still a pupil, and them went on to Trinity College, Cambridge where he received his BA. Dryden first wrote to celebrate the heroism of Oliver Cromwell, but then, despite his family’s political position, went on to use his literature to entertain and flatter important figures, including the newly crowned King Charles II. In the hedonistic Restoration years, the demand was high for all kinds of entertainment, especially theatre, and Dryden began to write plays.

However, John had seriously blotted his copybook with the family at Canons Ashby. Letters show that there was an understanding between him and his beautiful cousin Honor. There are even hints that they may have ‘anticipated’ a wedding, in relationship terms. But with John now embracing the frivolous world of theatre and London high society, and a move towards Roman Catholicism to please his patrons, marriage to Honor was now out of the question.

The Canons Ashby Drydens were still practicing Puritans, and Honor remained unmarried for the rest of her life.

In 1663, John had married the sister of his theatrical partner Sir Robert Howard, both a Royalist and a Roman Catholic. By 1665 he had made his reputation with ‘The Indian Emperor’, a heroic drama which was a box office hit. His income was healthier than his marriage proved to be. Lady Elizabeth Howard had come to the marriage with a compromised reputation. It seems that even though John was considered socially inferior, Elizabeth’s brothers had to bully John Dryden’s birthplace in Aldwinclde

him into marriage. Elizabeth was not considered a good catch, for she had enjoyed an intimate relationship with a dissolute nobleman, and her personality was considered unreliable. However, they both shared love for their children, if not so much for each other. Dryden also enjoyed the intimate company of at least one actress.

John’s literary work, poetry, prose, and plays made him fashionable and popular.

He impressed and flattered some of the most important men in the England, and within a few years was elected to the Royal Society, awarded a master’s degree by the Archbishop of Canterbury, created Historiographer Royal, and gained his most famous accolade as the first officially appointed Poet Laureate.

This acclaim made him overconfident, and he enjoyed poking fun at his contemporaries with witty satirical verse.

This did not increase his popularity with them. According to a newspaper of the time, a poem caused his rivals, thought to have been led by Lord Rochester, to hire ruffians to teach John a lesson.

“Mr Dryden, the great poet, was set upon in Rose-street, Covent Garden, by three persons who called him rogue and son of a whore, knocked him down and dangerously wounded him, but upon his crying out murder, they made their escape.”

John survived and offered a reward of £50 and a Royal pardon to learn the identity of who was behind the assault, but to no avail. However, this hardly affected his productivity, as he continued to write, mostly successfully. As he grew older, he turned his pen to religious matters, moving further towards Roman Catholicism. After the death of King

Charles II, and the coronation of James II, a Catholic, John fully converted. This proved a problem three years later, when James lost his throne to the Protestant William and Mary. John refused to swear an oath of allegiance to the new monarchs and lost his laureateship to a rival. However, he continued to make a living writing poetry and translating classic works. John died of gout in 1700, aged 69, with his reputation intact. He was buried and memorialised with honours in Westminster Abbey.

And in his will, he left money and property to found a school for the poor children of Northampton.

John Dryden was seen as a leader of cultural life in Restoration England.

In literary circles his lifetime became known as ‘The Age of Dryden’ and he was referred to as ‘Glorious John’. He has remained a widely read and quoted author, who innovated literary styles and forms, whose contribution is still appreciated today.

And as a footnote from his disapproving Canons Ashby family…

On the death of Robert Dryden in 1708, the family had run out of direct male heirs. Although Robert and John had been friends, the family could not tolerate a Roman Catholic inheriting their Puritan possessions. John’s son inherited the baronetcy, and should also have inherited the estate, but the family objected. Cousin Edward inherited instead as he was a Protestant.

It was only after the fact that the family discovered that Edward’s wife was from a Roman Catholic family, but that is indeed another story.

‘Companies like Cosworth are willing to invest heavily on the next generation of talent’

R

ecently I met up with Cosworth boss Hal Reisiger and his Group Marketing Director Nick Greenway at their Headquarters on St James Mill Road. Cosworth is a worldclass high-performance engineering and technology firm, an important part of the cutting-edge Motorsport Valley family mainly based here in Northamptonshire and one of those companies many people would be able to name as known for their association with Northampton.

We had a good catch-up on their business opportunities and risks.

I came away with the sort of information that is very useful for me to raise in my meetings with various Government departments to help them shape and adapt their policies.

Cosworth devotes huge resources towards research and development, making it a truly pioneering business - especially around the high growth, high yield areas of electric powertrains, battery technology and software development.

Cosworth is the sort of growth business that is vital for the future economic security of both the Northampton and the wider British economy. It has ambitious expansion plans, but there are risks.

Cosworth wants and needs to train up a new generation of skilled workers and the sector is struggling to find enough apprentices who have a talent for engineering and software technology. This is a huge opportunity for local schools and colleges to link in and work with Cosworth and other high performance technology companies to inspire and create the next generation of software and engineering pioneers. Companies like Cosworth are willing to invest heavily on the next generation of talent entering the world of

work and are especially keen to have female STEM specialists. This is a win-win collaboration opportunity for local industry and schools.

Back in Parliament I chair the All Party Parliamentary Group for Small and Medium Housebuilders. This skills shortage is hitting the construction industry too, which is why I launched an Inquiry into skills and the SME Housebuilding sector. We will be taking evidence from those with the hands-on and thus expert knowledge in the sector and beyond, to look at what the main constraints are and how we can alleviate the shortage. It is all too easy to say ‘we need more skills’ in our economy, but which skills, at which level and delivered in which way is not always as easy to ascertain.

The results of this inquiry and the accompanying report will be presented to Government in due course and will be published online.

I need not remind anyone of the critical nature of building enough houses to meet not only the current demand, but burgeoning future demands. New housing stock and getting the balance right between social rented, discounted and full market is critical for unlocking future economic growth, giving your children and grandchildren the opportunity to live in and indeed to own a home.

Skills for work in a changing and uncertain economy, skills to provide the much-needed housing stock for our country: Two key and very much linked challenges that I want to see Northampton leading the way in answering.

Defining Your Brand Vision, Mission and Values Think about the brands you purchase from over and over. Why do you choose to buy products and or services from them, even when cheaper options exist? Well, there's a good reason for it — because of their values.

Darren Isaac explains why a company's values are vital to its success.

I

f you run your own business, one of the first things you should do is define the fabric of your brand—what does it stand for? It’s actually quite common for many businesses not to have done this but it is hugely important and valuable in defining your direction and every decision you make.

When working out ‘what should we do?’, you need a brand barometer to evaluate your decisions against so you are actually considering ‘what would our brand do?’.

Why we do what we do The reason many business owners overlook this is that they simply aren’t aware it is something that should be done. Most of us are so focused on delivering what we do day to day, that we end up forgetting the importance of why we are doing it and who we are doing it for. Without our customers we have no business so we serve our customers’ needs and expectations and have to embody this in all that we do. The underpinnings of your brand decisionmaking are all about ‘finding your why’; why there is a need, why I am doing this and, ultimately, why should people buy from me? (or do they buy from my competitors?) When we look at what drives our business from the customer end we start to look more from the outside in than the inside out and this is the most important viewpoint we can have.

Defining your Vision The first place you should begin is with the vision you have for your brand. The aim is to write a few succinct lines, maximum a short paragraph of around 50-100 words, that define what success looks like for your brand. You really want this to be ‘big thinking’ in the context of what you personally would like to achieve. This can be as big as you want it to be but it shouldn’t be any bigger.

What I mean by this is there is no sense in having a vision for growth and expansion if you would simply like to be the most popular Italian restaurant in your area. On the flip side, you may have a dream of building a regional franchise network of Italian restaurants. Let’s imagine you run a dry cleaning business and your goal is to retire in ten years’ time with a group of dry cleaning stores that virtually run themselves.

Your Vision may look like this and should follow this type of format:

“Vision Statement: Clean Genie’s vision is to be the most profitable independent chain of dry cleaning stores in Buckinghamshire.

We aim to be the brand that the public knows better than any other and that customers choose first because we consistently meet and exceed their expectations and we do so with personality and style.”

Your Vision Statement need be no more than this and you should have it on your wall and remind yourself every day what you are working towards.

Defining your Mission The Mission Statement is as important as your Vision Statement. How can you achieve your vision without some kind of idea of how you’re going to get there?

Well, this is your mission. You will see an immediate difference in that the vision is centred around you, and what you aim to do, whereas the mission is centred around your customers and how, by pleasing them, they will facilitate your vision. The Vision Statement belongs on the wall in your office and the Mission Statement on the wall in reception. Your mission is your summary roadmap for success and it looks like this: “Mission Statement: We will become the most recognised and loved dry cleaning brand in Buckinghamshire by creating positive and memorable visibility of our brand in all of the locations we serve.

Our style will be bright, vibrant, warm and we dare to be different in ways that our customers will love. In delivering our service, our customers will find that they simply get more than expected with us, consistent excellence and value, and that this keeps them coming back and also telling their friends and family to do the same.”

Though quite simple, you can hopefully see how valuable a statement like this in setting out, very specifically, the components of how you will do what you do. Moreover, it sets out the things that will have true value to your customers and enable your business to reach its goals through a growing customer base. Your mission defines what makes you different in your delivery and the things you will strive for, every day. Ultimately, you want your customers to love doing business with you and to tell others because you do it differently and you do it better.

Brand Values The final piece of the puzzle with your brand foundations is your set of brand Values. It helps to go through the process in the order I have set out above because having a Vision and a Mission are your roots and these help to shape your values that form the trunk of the tree. Your values are essentially a list of words, elaborated into broader sentences, that define the spirit and strengths of how you do what you do.

Your brand values list should look something like this: • Care and Excellence - We care for our customers’ garments as though they are priceless, returning them without a crease or a mark, always on time.

• Warmth - We take the time to get to know our customers, provide service with a smile and simply be enjoyable to do business with.

• Giving Extra - The little things that matter and that make a difference will be prevalent in our service every time.

Ideally, you want somewhere between five and ten core values that you run your business by. Now you have set in clear and simple terms, what your brand goal is, how you’re going to get there and the way you will do things to make it all happen. This should be part of your DNA and, going back to what I said at the very start, should underpin every decision you make and all that you do.

Anyone can run a good business. Running a great business, one that really stands out, takes an unwavering commitment to being different in ways that really matter to customers and that are palpable in a superior customer experience.

Meet our publisher with her finger on the Pulse

One minute she might be commissioning a feature about a round-the-world charity trek, and the next organising her dozens of delivery staff, or getting creative with advertising artwork. As the editor and publisher of the biggest monthly titles covering Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire, Kerry Lewis-Stevenson thrives on the variety that heading up Pulse Magazine involves. Kerry spoke with Sammy Jones about her journey so far and her vision for the future...

ith a keen eye for art and design, Kerry was a creative force from a young age. She completed a foundation course in Art and Design at Nene College before hot-footing it to Liverpool to undertake a three year degree in graphic design.

Returning to Northamptonshire, she worked for Blue Ribbon Label Company in Milton Keynes, which proved a great learning curve.

“I learned the print trade from the ground up, gaining an understanding of every kind of print method there was, and that was the start of my career path,” Kerry said.

“When the company relocated, I worked as a gift designer, but I wanted to go back to graphic design, so I went to work for another local company and they allowed me to work self-employed.”

Kerry’s business brain began ticking: “I realised I could earn the same amount of money that I earned full time working just three days a week for myself. I made the jump and I’ve never looked back.”

Kerry had also studied with the Chartered Institute of Marketing, gaining a Post-Grad Diploma which bolstered her know-how.

In the late noughties, Kerry began drawing up a new plan – for a magazine that would sit at the heart of the community.

“There were other titles locally, and one was being used by everyone to source suppliers and to keep in touch with what was happening. I loved the village vibe that surrounded it. I thought, ‘Why can’t we do that for Milton Keynes?’

“I felt I could do it and had enough print experience behind me to make it work.”

That first issue of Pulse came out in the spring of 2009. The print run was 10,000, which might have been seen as rather ambitious.

“I wanted to hit the ground running,” she explains, “I never thought I’d fail, I genuinely didn’t. It might sound arrogant or foolish, but I just really believed in the product.

I knew it was something that people would respond to, would need and would use.

INTERVIEW I only ever saw the magazine continuing to grow, and that’s what has happened.”

But during those early days Pulse might have been seen as ‘just’ another title in a busy market. What gave it the edge?

“There were other magazines available to people, but they were all A5 and we were an A4 publication, which gave advertisers a bit more space to contribute editorial,” Kerry said.

“People must have picked it up because of its size and because it had fairly good content, but if I am brutally honest, in those early days it wasn’t anything special – it wasn’t the brilliant page-turner that it is today.

“What I wanted was a real community spirit around printed media, and that’s most definitely what Pulse is today.”

Print has been in sharp decline in recent years, but it’s not game over. Far from it. Titles like Pulse are bucking the trend and going from strength to strength.

And it’s not just luck and a prayer that has put Pulse into pole position. It’s a sound business plan and a real understanding of where the title sits in the community that has done that.

“People see us everywhere; walk into an office building, or centre:mk or somewhere locally and you will see Pulse,” Kerry says, “Visibility, content and advertising are all key – if any one of those fails, we don’t have readers, and without them, we are nothing. We will never forget that.”

“We care about the people in our titles - we want them to succeed and get business from our printed matter and digital matter.

“I see Pulse having an online presence as big as the print presence that we already have, and I am actively working on plans for that expansion just now.”

Pulse delivers community stories, exclusive features, music and theatre and much more.

It doesn’t do hard news, and that’s a conscious thing: “News is a different kettle of fish – it’s immediate and it’s taken online. We can see that very much at the moment with the horror happening in Europe,” Kerry said, “Pulse, and the business papers, offer positive stories and promote what is going on locally in the community. It’s real content too – not click-bait nonsense.

“We are something that doesn’t just last a week on a coffee table – we last a month, sometimes two...people keep us and re-read us and that’s what is so important. It proves that people care about our content.”

Pulse is a growing title in MK and Northampton, and it stands to reason that it is something of a sizeable employer too.

With 12 employed staff members, three self-employed contributors and 120 delivery agents, work is definitely not a 9-5 affair for the lady at the helm.

The laptop is always by Kerry’s side, but that’s the way it needs to be: “A lot of people rely on us now and that is a responsibility, but it’s a good responsibility to have,” she

considers, “We have grown the business to where it is today and the whole team has worked to get it to this size, not just me.”

By putting in the hard graft, Kerry has learned that taking a little downtime is not a luxury, it’s a necessary part of the job.

“I would advise anybody starting out in business that you need to put in the hours to make the business a success, but you do still need to take some time out, you really do, otherwise work can really wear you down, which can be really detrimental.”

Her bulldogs Cooper and Diesel take life at a leisurely pace, which forces Kerry to take her foot off the gas every now and then, but she is a dab hand at putting the pedal to the metal too – she shares a love of motorbiking with husband Martin and they relish their trips in the saddle.

“There is nothing better than motorbiking on the continent,” she promises, and we’ll take her word for that!

It was International Women’s Day earlier this month; a chance to celebrate women and their contribution to business. Do you ever feel like a woman in a man’s world?

“I suppose if you think of the hazy days of Fleet Street journalism, you would see it very much as a man’s world, but of course there are a hell of a lot of great females in the industry too,” Kerry shrugged, “I suppose I am a woman in a man’s world, but it’s not something I’ve ever dwelled on – I just get on with the job.”

Visibility, content and advertising are all key – if any one of those fails, we don’t have readers, and without them, we are nothing. We will never forget that.”

Like many other publications, Pulse ceased printing for a spell during the pandemic, but Kerry made sure the magazine came back fast – and first.

“We had to in order to ensure our survival, but also because we are there for our advertisers – and that doesn’t mean only during the good times. It means we are there for them all the time, and I’m proud of that fact.”

At a time when business uncertainty was rife, Kerry went one further – expanding the portfolio with two business titles – Business MK and Business Times.

Kerry knows that digital still has a major part to play in today’s environment, though.

“I love print and I think it really is here to stay and it will become more exclusive because there are less of us doing it, but I do realise that I have to future proof the business, so I am working on our online offering and our digital capability, and building Facebook groups and keeping that community feel, which is what the magazines and our business papers do so well.

his is the highest award available as an outcome of the inspection following the inspectors’ visit in January. The report focuses on the achievement of the pupils, including both academic development and personal development.

Head teacher Antonia Lee said: “I am incredibly proud of this wonderful assessment of life and learning at Winchester House. The result is not only a testament to the hard work, dedication and passion of our magnificent team but also to the pupils throughout the school who continue to push themselves to thrive in all areas of school life.”

Inspectors visited the school over a week, joining lessons and meeting with staff and pupils. “I was particularly thrilled to see such positive observations on Winchester House children throughout the report” said Ms Lee. “We have high academic aspirations at the school of course, but to receive such positive feedback on well-rounded Winchester House pupils was very satisfying and a celebration of the rich curriculum and broad aspirations for learning we have here.”

Cauliflower & chickpea tikka masala INGREDIENTS

METHOD

1 medium cauliflower (about 1kg)

1. Preheat the oven to 220°C, gas mark 7. Line a large baking tray with foil.

Break the cauliflower into large florets, reserving any tender leaves. Toss the florets with 1⁄2 tbsp oil and spread over one side of the baking tray. Toss the chickpeas with another 1 tbsp oil and the turmeric, and spread over the other side of the baking tray. Roast for 20 minutes, stirring each side and adding the cauliflower leaves halfway through.

2 tbsp vegetable oil 400g can chickpeas, rinsed and drained ½ tsp ground turmeric 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 15g fresh root ginger, finely chopped ½ x 283g jar Patak’s Tikka Masala Spice Paste 200g fresh tomatoes, finely chopped 3 tbsp non-dairy yogurt alternative, such as oat ¼ x 25g pack coriander, leaves only Steamed basmati rice, to serve Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 25 minutes Serves: 4

2. Meanwhile, heat the remaining 1⁄2 tbsp oil in a large pan. Fry the onion for 5 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and ginger and fry for 1 minute. Add the curry paste and fry for 2 minutes. Pour in 50ml water and cook until evaporated.

3. Add the tomatoes and 200ml water to the pan; simmer for 5 minutes, then spoon in the cauliflower. Simmer over a medium-low heat for 5 minutes. Take off the heat and stir in 2 tbsp yogurt alternative. Add the chickpeas and cauliflower leaves. Finish with the final 1 tbsp yogurt alternative and the coriander leaves.

Serve with steamed basmati rice.

COOK’S TIP This is a wonderfully comforting vegan recipe, though you could replace the yogurt alternative with 3 tbsp natural yogurt for a vegetarian option.

'A groundbreaking change that will better our whole industry'

S

ir David Attenborough has achieved a lot in his lifetime. A worldrenowned traveller, broadcaster, naturalist and environmentalist.

But I wonder if he has ever before been considered a revolutionary? I am sure he has.

At Daily Bread, though, we think we can credit him (at least partly) with starting something that will change the way our co-operative works for many years to come and we hope that, as with endeavours in the past like organic foods and fairly traded products, we will be counted among the first to bring to the business world a groundbreaking change that will better our whole industry.

A few years ago we introduced packaging material that is similar to the plastic bags we had been using in that it is flexible and transparent but which is made from wood pulp and is completely biodegradable and home compostable. We presently pack most of our products weighing 1kg or less in this packaging. There is also a small selection of products packed in paper bags that have no inner plastic liner.

Our other major step, taken about five

years ago was to introduce a refilling station for some of the cleaning and body care products we offer and this has slowly expanded over time including products like unwrapped soap. It has been a huge success that and our other eco products like wax food wraps (beeswax and vegan versions) bamboo straws and many more products. There even is Ecoleaf Home Compostable Cling Film.

John Clarke, our produce buyer, also helped to introduce our latest endeavour, a food refillable station. We currently have 20 popular products on offer, mostly organic.

You can bring in your empty container and refill and save not just on packaging but also money as most of the produce is sold at a cheaper price.

“We are not the first to do this but we hope it will be successful,” said John “with the hope that we will expand the refill area with more bodycare and food products. Animals in Need (AIN) volunteer Zoe Plummer tells Pulse's Sammy Jones about the beauty of bunnies, and why you should think before you give one a home.

ith their wiggly, twitchy noses, their powder puff tails and those lovely long ears, bunnies are undoubtedly pretty little things. And they are often the preferred choice for a first pet.

The kids will love them and they'll be easy to look after, won't they?

And therein lies the problem – it simply isn't true to think of them as low-maintenance pets simply because they don't need to be taken out on a lead twice a day.

“Rabbits are not an 'easy' pet for a child,” says Zoe, “They have a nervous nature, so building a relationship of trust takes a lot of patience. Rabbits, like all all pets, have specific needs for housing, cleaning, handling, and food, and you need to create interesting and stimulating activities for them to do. Rabbits need companionship as much as food, so you should have at least a pair of rabbits.”

Unfortunately, as rabbits aren't as interactive as our feline and canine friends, attentions wane in youngsters, the bunny grows up and parents are left to feed 'the thing in the hutch' in the garden.

Imagine being that little bunny – confined, lonely and largely forgotten.

Some families who realise their mistake do the right thing and take them to their nearest animal charity – which is where Animals in Need steps in.

“We currently have 31 beautiful characters seeking their forever homes,” Zoe told me, but that small number contributes to a colossal nationwide figure, with around 67,000 rabbits being given up to rescue centres annually in this country.

The average length of stay for a rabbit in a rescue centre is a year.

“The most common reason we hear when people bring them to us is 'The rabbit isn't getting the time and care they should.'

Sometimes, people discover they have an allergy to hay or to rabbit fur, and housing situations can also result in families needing to surrender the rabbits.”

While AIN is there to support animals and assist owners in times of need, they would far rather people thought long and hard before deciding to give a rabbit, or indeed any animal, a home, because when things break down and go wrong, these beautiful little creatures suffer terribly.

In November, a large grey rabbit was handed in to a veterinary practice in Northampton. He hadn't been microchipped and so there was no way of contacting an owner. If there even was one.

Staff called him Fred and he was handed to AIN. He was broken.

“His skin was covered in sores, he had fur missing from around his eyes which were so

infected they were raw and bleeding, he was very underweight and his nails and teeth were overgrown.

“He just sat in the corner of his house and didn’t move, he had completely lost his spirit,” Zoe remembers.

Quite how Fred had ended up in such a horrendous state doesn't bear thinking about, but thanks to the persistence and gentle support of AIN's volunteers and daily medication for several weeks, this fragile little fella is learning to live again; he is now grooming himself, his eyes and skin are showing signs of improvement and he is loving his food. He has even started to play – it's a world away from the creature who arrived late last year.

Zoe said: “When we go in to see him, he will now come forward for attention too – it's wonderful to see the change and we hope Fred can be put up for adoption next month.”

And adoption is always the way to go – every time you 'shop' instead of 'adopt' you are adding to the problem of unwanted bunnies. And with 45 million rabbits in the UK, their numbers need no help to grow.

“When you adopt a rabbit, you give them a second chance. Adopting a bonded pair or trio is ideal if you work full time because the rabbits can entertain each other.”

And the reasons to adopt are plentiful: “Adopting from a rescue means the staff can talk with you about the rabbits’ personality helping you find the right fit for your family. You will be supporting and promoting positive animal welfare which makes you a good human.”

And let's talk a little about the positives of giving Bugs a home – there are lots of those too.

“They will make you smile when you are down, will listen when you need to talk and they will sit with you when you need a friend.

Rabbits are the most playful in the morning and evenings so they are the perfect start and end to your day. Rabbits are intelligent, they can learn tricks and play games and they are just adorable to look at, so what is not to love? Bunnies can be sweet, friendly, sassy, energetic, balls of love with plenty of character.

“They are quiet too, so they will never bother a neighbour or wake you in the night.”

Donating time to Animals in Need is far from a one-way street – it helps the volunteers every bit as much as the animals, and Zoe is a perfect case in point.

Shortly before the first lockdown, Zoe gave up her position teaching photography to work freelance. Her business was an early casualty of the pandemic and closed within two months.

To make ends meet, she took on freelance work as a dog walker, until a freak accident shattered her hip socket and rendered her largely immobile. Six months later she was still struggling to return to pre-accident levels of mobility.

“My mental health was hugely impacted whilst healing from this life-defining event and together with the impact of COVID on social interaction life was not feeling great,” she admits.

And then she came across an advert for volunteers and staff at the centre, and things got brighter.

“Animals In Need has been amazing for my physical recovery and for my mental health,” she said, “The animals and my fantastic colleagues have been a lifeline in my recovery. I smile and laugh every day at work and have real value in what I do.”

They need companionship and stimulation in their home, space to exercise and somewhere cosy to sleep.

A healthy diet will help prevent dental and gut disease; rabbits should eat hay, nuggets and greens and have constant access to fresh water.

You should check that your rabbits eat daily and create plenty of dry droppings.

Their front teeth and nails should be checked weekly. Only vets should correct overgrown teeth.

They need shelter from weather and safety from predators. Annual vaccinations and vet checks are important. Groom your rabbit regularly and give treatment for fleas and worms.

Should we get our bunnies neutered?

Yes, please do. Un-neutered females are at risk of developing womb cancer and un-neutered male rabbits are likely to fight.

W

e’ve spent the past couple of issues advising how and when to start planning the year ahead for your garden and when to think about putting down the seeds that will provide good stuff throughout the year – including fruit and vegetables.

But this month, we are turning our attention to something else you can do to enhance your outside space, and it’s an easy way to help bees and butterflies find their way to you; by sowing wildflowers.

Wildflowers will transform a bland space into an attractive one that is bursting with colour and life.

As a youngster, I used to love feeling the sun on my back, taking in the views of the blooming wildflowers, and listening to the chirping of grasshoppers, but it’s something that future generations will never experience unless we act now.

In less than a century, 97% of our wild flower meadows have been lost.

Of course, our own back gardens don’t lend themselves to a luscious green meadow bursting with pops of wildflower colour, but we can still help to make a difference. If we all do a little, the combined efforts count for a lot.

We can start by ditching the fake stuff!

Insects can’t live in fake grass, birds can’t feed from it, and it uses plastic which can’t be recycled. At a time when our wildlife is struggling to adapt to loss of habitat because of our intensive farming and new builds, do we

Too much water is more likely to kill your plant, as opposed to too little.

Plants don’t like warm water and they hate icy cold water just as much - when giving them a drink, make sure the water is at room temperature, and you might need to increase the frequency or amount you give at this time of the year, simply because many of our plants tend to grow more in the spring and summer.

Wildflowers will help bring your garden to life

And, while you might think they look attractive, it won’t take too many years before the fake lawns look nasty. We’re not trying to vilify those of you who are looking outside at your own plastic installation, but if you do have a fake lawn, you will also know that while they remove the need for a mower, they still need to be washed and brushed...even hoovered!

It’s best to turf out the pretend turf and get back to nature. The birds and the butterflies will love you for it, and there’s a reason why we are told to get closer to nature – it’s good for mind, body and spirit.

Having established that there is no substitute for the real thing, the quickest way to increase colour and support to the garden is to stop mowing – allowing a patch to grow wild will increase biodiversity.

Wildflower seeds and seed bombs are commonplace in stores and online and are an easy way to help launch a wildflower patch or ‘mini-meadow’ – but don’t just expect to toss the seeds on the ground and enjoy instant success; instructions are there for a reason, so do heed them.

Lady’s Bedstraw, oxeye-daisy, common daisies, wild carrot, cowslip, cornflower, common knapweed, selfheal and white and red campion are among those delicate blooms which are aesthetically pleasing, and they will ‘bee’ brilliant for our pollinators.

Our actions today will benefit tomorrow’s generations, and that has got to be worth causing a buzz about!

What a beautiful time of year this is. Daffodils are in flower, as are a wide selection of alpines and heathers (see photo). Spring has sprung!

There’s much to do in the garden. As flowers fade, don’t forget to deadhead. Preventing daffodils from setting seed allows the food from the leaves to be transported underground that will help to produce healthy existing and new bulbs.

Clipping heathers before they produce new leaf growth helps to produce compact plants.

Whilst flowers are still visible it’s a good time to dig up anything you’re not keen on and also to remove the adjacent seedlings.

Flowering currants, Ribes sanguineum, will benefit from a hard prune to encourage next year’s flowers, as soon as this year’s flowers have faded.

It’s also time to sow hardy annuals, herbs and wild flower seeds outside.

Select your site, weed and level the soil and tread lightly beforehand.

Pot marigolds, Calendula officinalis, are an old favourite with single, preferred by bees, or double flowers in various shades of yellow and orange. They will withstand a light frost but do have some fleece at the ready.

Have you somewhere that you could spare to grow wild flowers?

They are a great benefit to butterflies and bees with various mixes available, and many flowering in their first year.

Even though marble has had its fair share of glory days, a preference for overuse in interiors has seen it labelled as flashy and ostentatious in the not-so-distant past. Yet these negative connotations appear to have fallen by the wayside as a new tranche of designers find ever more interesting and exciting ways to use marble to enhance their projects. The key to keeping the look on trend is to use it in smaller areas – accent walls, shower panels, kitchen islands, work surfaces, window seats, fireplace recesses, furniture tops and statement accessories – think less is more and you won’t go far wrong.

Marble is predominantly found in China, India, Italy and Spain, with quarries in these locations accounting for around half of the world’s marble. Although marble extraction leaves a significant environmental impact, almost everything extracted is eventually used, even down to the marble powder.

Thanks to new technology and CNC machinery, marble can be cut and fashioned into all sorts of shapes, creating seductively sweeping staircases, smart linear fireplaces and beautifully curved, built-in baths. The only limitation is the size of the slab, so if you’re planning a long plinth or worktop you’ll need to factor in a join.

If your budget doesn’t stretch to a whole slab of marble, then follow Cameron Diaz’s lead and populate your room with smaller pieces such as marble topped furniture and objet d’art. A pair of marble lamps will make a striking focal point on bedside tables or a hall console.

or British landscape artists, one of the joys of painting our countryside is documenting our changing seasons. This time of year, watching nature spring back into life after the chill of winter provides new inspiration and motivation to create.

‘Flora’ designates plant life but it was also the Roman goddess of animals, wildlife and fertility and as a female figure, she was the subject of early paintings depicting spring.

From the 19th Century, artists such as Van Gogh and Monet focused on flowers and trees and we began to see paintings without any human presence, placing nature at the centre their artwork.

The natural world and our relationship to it provides endless inspiration, even for contemporary artists and here we shine a spotlight on three leading painters in this genre.

Suffolk based Paul Evans focuses on the big skies and gentle landscapes of his local countryside, recording the changing light, weather and seasons from frosted fields to hot summer meadows with stunning results. Paul is particularly renowned for painting bluebell forests, something that is an annual treat for many of us here in Northamptonshire.

Mary Shaw is a talented and entirely self-taught artist, completing her first commission at the age of just thirteen.

After developing a strong affection for the countryside, she became interested in rare and endangered species found amongst England’s hedgerows and they often feature in her work. Mary’s art has a delicate feel and is often embellished with touches of sparkle added to the flowers bringing a sense of light and movement to her paintings.

Kay Davenport is a botanical artist who begins by photographing flowers at different stages of their life cycle, from a perfectly formed bud to a windblown bloom that has lost its petals – everything has beauty and tells its own story in her eyes. Kay places her floral subject as the hero of her pieces, set against a strong coloured background.

Sate your musical appetite by taking in a gig or three in town this month – there’s a tasty array of artists heading our way, not to mention the return of Record Store Day. Sammy Jones has the details...

Music at the ‘Mender Supergrass - Still Alright!

O

ne of the most innovative, feel-good acts to come out of the musically fertile ‘90s were Oxford-ites Supergrass, and the Gaz Coombes fronted quartet will be making everyone feel Alright at The Roadmender on Saturday, April 2.

Now we would remind you of their blinding chart-bothering moments like Going Out, Richard III, Pumping on your Stereo and Moving, but that’ll just upset you if you’re not already in receipt of a ticket – it sold out in super quick time. Obviously.

The inimitable Wilko Johnson (April 9) is promising to deliver material from across the years at his show, and he will naturally dig into the current offering, Blow Your Mind – his first elpee release of new material in three decades.

We have to give special mention to his band too; one a Blockhead, the other a former Blockhead; bassist Norman Watt Roy and drummer Dylan Howe.

If you are seeking musicianship to marvel at, you’ve come to the right place, and Norman’s prowess on the bass is simply unparalleled.

For a man who perished when he was shoved off a cliff, Barry Evans isn’t doing so badly; his Barrioke (April 15) bashes are becoming quite the rave with music fans and Eastenders lovers keen to grab tickets for these events. Shaun Williamson will play a set of the ‘hottest hits on the planet’, and if you are game, you’ll be able to join him at the mic too. If you fancy putting your hat in the ring for that, get along nice and early and sign up.

The Alarm are celebrating 40 years in the music industry, and they stop off in Northampton on April 16.

To mark the anniversary, frontman Mike Peters has created a new Red Poppy t-shirt, which brings together 400 song titles and significant 48

lyrics that have evolved during his time as the band’s principal songwriter.

“This is the year of the Red Poppy” Mike said, “Forty years ago the original symbol appeared on the Marching On single sleeve and has been with us in one shape or another, ever since. For 2022, I wanted to create a fresh image with the classic look... I literally spent hours filling the iconic original shape with the words from all the song titles associated with The Alarm.

“It was a real labour of love, and I thought it was a special way to commemorate and bring together these two most significant 40th Anniversary events – the birth of the band and the symbol that has come to define our community – the Red Poppy.”

In the 80s, Hue and Cry gave us timeless hits like Looking For Linda and Labour of Love, and in 2022 the appetite to hear them played live is still thriving, and so are the brothers responsible for delivering them.

Pat and Greg come to the Roadmender on April 22 with just piano and vocals to do the talking, simply because they don’t need anything else to make them sound great.

Last up, Andy C (April 30) tops the bill at a mighty drum & bass event to celebrate 17 years of Random Concept.

Andy will be let loose with a two-hour set, which promises to show you just why he is called ‘the executioner’!

Grab some giveaways, be floored by the state of the art lighting and lasers, see if you can match the movements of the professional dancers, and go home with confetti in your hair. GEORDIES LEAVE WONDERLAND FOR ROADMENDER RETURN The Roadmender has also announced dates for UK Foo Fighters (June 11), Newton Faulkner who brings his Feels Like Home tour to town on September 29, Glaswegian rockers King King (October 16) and Geordie livewires The Wildhearts (November 11), following their date at the venue late last year.

Lastly, Sweet will deliver a Blockbuster of a night out when they appear as part of their ‘Blitz of Hits’ (December 9).

All the hits will air, alongside some brilliant album tracks. A full light show will accompany the gig, and you’ll want to make it along nice and early to catch ‘fampton finery The Venus Fly Trap opening the show with their ‘Bladerunner sci-fi rock ‘n’ roll mixed with acidic cinematic visions.’

ecord Store Day 2022 is on Saturday, April 23, and Northampton music fans are in safe hands with Spun Out and Vinyl Underground both partaking in the annual celebration of vinyl.

It’s the 15th year this celebration of the round things has been held and big releases this time around include more from Bowie, Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, Prince and Blondie.

Spunout will be opening their doors at 8am and have their excellent mix of DJs and bands lined-up to tickle your ears while you peruse the racks of special releases.

Vinyl Underground will also open up at 8am before dashing across to The Black Prince which is also getting in on the act with a Record Fair, because we can never have too much vinyl!

This year, the fair is running from the slightly earlier time of 10.30am – so as soon as you’ve got your mitts on your most desired releases at your chosen RSD outlet, you can hot-foot it to the pub for more flicking through the racks, and a hearty breakfast of... a pint or two. After all, these special vinyl days are thirsty work!

DJs will be playing for you all day long and entry is free.

And lastly, but by no means least, Spiral Archive Records will be holding a half price record sale. There will also be a Record Fair at Lamplighter between midday and 4pm.

aughter is the best medicine, and by ‘eck could we all do with a little uplift, a fact not lost on Northampton’s Underground, which has booked Matt Forde (April 1) with his show, Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right.

Matt will lash out right, left and centre and bring some funny voices to the performance too – well, he does work on that Spitting Image programme, after all.

The last time we saw Bette & Joan (April 1 & 2) it was on stage in Brighton with Anita Dobson as Joan Crawford and Greta Scacchi as her rival Bette Davis. It was a sublime piece of theatrical weight, and more than a decade on still rates as one of our most favourite deliveries.

Bette and Joan were arch-rivals, and A-list stars who shared the limelight, and sometimes lovers.

The show places them in their dressing rooms on the set of their new film, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

The script was delightful, and despite the scathing bitchiness the audience was able to peer through the cracks at fragility and regret.

This production is by Northamptonshire theatre company White Cobra, which is marking its decade anniversary in 2022.

Victoria Miles is Bette, and Kate Billingham stars as Joan when the curtain rises at The Royal.

Tommy Tiernan (April 4) has hit his half century now, but age hasn’t dulled him, and he will wonder aloud about God, sex and family in a way that seems equally sacred and profane when he visits the Derngate.

Lord of The Dance (April 5-9) has spent the past 25 years kicking perfectly choreographed legs and celebrating Irish dancing.

To mark the special milestone, this tour is going to the next level, with cutting edge technology, special effects and remarkable lighting. Michael Flatley will direct.

Deborah Frances-White brings The Guilty Feminist to the Derngate (April 10), and this is part comedy, part deep-dive discussion and part activism, with a number of world class guests joining to keep the conversation flowing.

FILM OF THE MONTH - Star Rating: 4/5

The Duke is the increasingly rare film that’s comfortable being a breezy 90 minutes long. That might not sound like great praise. However, this film was director Roger Michell’s (Notting Hill) last before his untimely death last year and while The Duke isn’t destined to live on as a ground-breaking classic, it’s a sweet comedy drama that (a couple of aspects aside) isn’t indulgent, tells a quintessentially quirky British true story and reliably excellent performances from seasoned British actors (plus more swearing than usual for a 12A-rated film!).

In this film, it’s evergreen character actor Jim Broadbent as Kempton Bunton, the jovial aspiring script-writer from Newcastle who’s well-read and outspoken, especially about making TV licences free for pensioners. He’s not impressed when in 1961 the nation buys Francisco Goya’s portrait of the

Duke of Wellington for £140,000. One visit to London later, the painting goes missing and Bunton’s red-handed (or is he?).

Broadbent is perfect for the lead role which suiting his unassuming, gently comical onscreen presence, and ensures that Bunton’s likeable despite his motormouth and overall stubbornness, including physically removing the means to receive the BBC on his own TV to not pay the licence (spoiler alert: it doesn’t work). Mirren is equally welcome as Bunton’s wife Dorothy, who’s grown weary not just of his refusal to pay their own TV licence or give up his seemingly hopeless campaigns, but also working through their shared, unresolved trauma of their daughter’s death. Her character, particularly her interactions with Kempton and their spirited son Jackie (Fionn Whitehead), helps ground the film from ever lurching into outright triviality. ✪

When a character’s as lucrative as Batman, reboot after reboot is only inevitable. Director Matt Reeves’ new take, starring a worthy turn

by Robert Pattinson as an especially moody and troubled Batman, certainly puts the ‘dark’ in ‘dark knight’. Namely, its impressively gloomy atmosphere in Gotham that rains almost every night and the Riddler (Paul Dano), here reworked as an unnerving internet-dwelling killer eliminating the city’s corrupt elite. The film gets sloppier the further it drags on with certain plot points introduced right as they’re paid off, which is less forgivable given the three-hour runtime and how it continually extends shots and scenes longer than necessary. It’s not up there with Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight films but mercifully much better than Warner Bros.’s rushed universe-building featuring Ben Affleck as Batman. ✪

Luca is the latest Pixar film sent straight to streaming on Disney+ (and later Blu-ray/ DVD), presumably for mid-pandemic business reasons rather than artistic ones.

Still, if this isn’t Pixar’s worst film it might well be their slightest. Luca the young sea creature discovers one day that he turns human when out of water (literally “fish out of water”?) and makes friends with Alberto and Giulia, though is forced to hide his true self from the seaside town that fears his kind. Too much of the story, and themes of friendship overcoming fear and suspicion, have already been done in other animated films with more imagination and depth, including by Pixar in Monsters, Inc. The attention to detail of its Italian riviera setting and the sweet character relationships aren’t enough. ✪

Released last year and now available to stream, this is Hollywood’s second stab at filming the very violent beat-em-up video game series. Whereas the 1990s Mortal Kombat films remain very poor adaptations but are very silly and funny regardless, this one’s a better adaptation with fight scenes that are better choreographed and blood and gore closer resembling the games. Yet, despite its main cast including someone who gains robotic arms, an ice-wielding assassin and a foul-mouthed brawny Australian, the film’s determined to mostly focus on its bland-as-anything ‘Chosen One’ protagonist, with his motivations to protect his family even blander than his dialogue. Thank goodness this film’s main stakes are in its realm-hopping, magic-powered martial arts. ✪

Speaking of video game adaptations, adventure film Uncharted is much closer to the typical Hollywood butchering they’ve subjected to series like Tomb Raider, Warcraft, etc. The film stars Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, despite them not at all resembling the original game characters Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan, professional thieves who form an uneasy partnership to find hidden gold before the powerful Moncada family does. The lead pair coast on their honed screen charm (Holland’s performance is essentially him as Peter Parker again), because the script certainly gives them nothing to work with. The action’s ridiculous, the plot and logic even more so, and Antonio Banderas gets wasted; Uncharted chases gold but this film’s treasure is eye-rolling rather than dazzling. ✪

Beating the

PRICE SQUEEZE

on fuel costs ADAM TUDOR-LANE offers some timely tips on fuel saving for your vehicles to try and beat the price squeeze at the petrol pumps.

A

s war darkens the skies on European soil once more, the effects of sanctions work both ways, and they’re first being felt here at the pump. VAT currently adds 26p to every litre and fuel duty another 58p. So we pay 84p a litre in tax alone…

With the government unlikely to reduce either of those costs by a significant amount, what can you do to up your MPG (miles per gallon) and save money? Here are a few top tips - aside from buying an electric car.

Tyre Pressure One of the biggest impacts on MPG can be tyre pressures; ‘yup’, those black round things that you get replaced every few years and rarely take much notice of.

You should be checking them regularly as tyres can naturally lose around 2 PSI a month.

A study in the U.S. found that a 10% drop in pressure increases fuel consumption by 2%.

These may sound like small numbers, but at £90 a tank, 2% is £1.80; add that up over a month or two of driving, and you could end up saving a decent amount.

You’ll be able to find the correct tyre pressures for your car in your manual or somewhere on the door shut. If not, pop your reg in online here - tyresafe.org/car-tyre-pressure/ One of the best 12v tyre inflators for the money that I’ve tested is the Ring RTC1000, that way you don’t have to keep going to the petrol station and spending a quid a time to check your pressures.

Fuel System Cleaner

De-clutter

Some call it snake oil, but a fuel system cleaner will actually boost your MPG. If you’ve never used one in your car, then it’s worth doing. A fuel system cleaner such as Redex can remove deposits that build up in the engine and along your fuel lines over time.

All you do is bung it in your tank and drive.

Think of it as an MOT for your fuel system. If you never use higher octane, premium fuels, it’s worth doing at least once a year.

Redex is available for petrol and diesel vehicles, so make sure you buy the right one.

If you always drive around with lots of rubbish in your car, ditch it. That goes for roof boxes, racks and rails too.

Extra weight and drag will use more fuel, it doesn’t make much of a difference around town, but longer journeys or particularly hilly drives will sap away at your MPG. A roof box may only knock around 0.2 off your MPG, but when coupled with less weight and correct pressures, the small gains for little effort can mean money in your pocket.

Air Conditioning No, it’s not a myth. Using your air-con on a city drive can make it dip by a massive 8%. So if you’re ‘pootling’ around achieving 30 MPG, it can drop to around the 28 mark just through having the air conditioning on.

You’re much better off opening the windows; even fully open you’d only lose around 0.5 MPG compared to the 2 eaten up by the AC. On motorways using air-con barely makes a difference, so crack on.

For the sake of a few minutes checking your tyres, unloading unnecessary stuff and bunging in some fuel cleaner, you could squeeze out a few extra miles from your tank.

While you won’t save a tenner overnight, as Tesco says – every little helps.

But the most significant factor when it comes to MPG is driving style, it’s a big topic to cover, so I’ll explain all in next month’s issue.

We had just passed a sign for Toddington Services. Knowing that Junction 13 was just beyond, I decided to push the stricken motorcycle past and off the motorway.

It was the eighties. I was young. I was stupid. I didn’t know any better.

By the time we reached the service area, I was fit to drop. So we decided to park it off the motorway and see if we could hitch a ride home. If even one biker obliged, at least my pal stood a chance of getting home in time.

We were both soaked through; my pillion was six foot of hugeness; and my face was covered in grease and filth from my hands after handling the chain. Sweaty and panting after pushing what I now thought of as a two-wheeled child of the Devil, didn’t help.

We somehow ended up chatting to a slight, smartly attired chap. He had ridden a motorcycle in the past and asked what we were riding. We told him our very sorry tale.

He offered us both a lift in his very posh and expensive Rover (eighties!). Not only that but he dropped each of us to our respective front doors!

Given the times we live in, imagine offering a lift to a pair who looked as if on the run after murdering someone!

The Push

y pillion and I had been on a motorcycle trip to London and were now heading up the M1 in the rain, back home to Pulseland.

Zipping along the almost empty motorway on a Saturday afternoon in the eighties, I could hear a ticking came from somewhere below me.

It was loud enough to be heard over the engine noise, despite wearing a crash helmet. It didn’t sound good, so I slowed and moved onto the hard shoulder, whereupon the ticking ceased. Checking the way was clear (eighties, remember?), I rejoined the motorway.

My reward was a return of the loud ticking.

Again I rolled back the throttle and drifted onto the hard shoulder.

And again the ticking went away.

Intending to rejoin the main carriageway, I accelerated and it came back. So I slowed to a stop and off we got.

My friend hadn’t heard the sound and was puzzled why we were currently miles from home and going nowhere. He had an exciting night out planned and so wasn’t best pleased.

My description of the noise meant nothing to him so I hoisted the machine up onto its mainstand, started the engine, and then ran through the gears. It was as I changed into fourth that the ticking returned, to be followed by the drive chain flying off the back and landing far away along the hard shoulder.

The rain continued. I retrieved the chain and examined it. A side plate had broken and the sound had been a warning of total failure.

I was wet and now had filthy hands.

We were a mess and it seemed certain that my pal would miss his date tonight.

Flavour of the Times - How on earth do I say something that is relevant to people at war in Ukraine and expect it to be relevant to us here? There are three clusters of all the signs, bar two, gathered together in a quarter of the sky – in Aquarius, Pisces and Aries, so it’s still intense and condensed. Pluto goes backwards at the end of the month – still in Capricorn – so it still has some old business to conduct. Other than that, the river of life, society etc. is flowing forward now and the new moon in Aries gives everything an acceleration. Jupiter next to Neptune supports creativity and optimism in everything, so long as we stay a bit realistic, with at least one foot on the ground, while humanitarian considerations and plans are enhanced by Mars, Venus and Saturn huddled in Aquarius. Reasons to be cautiously hopeful, I would say.
