t’s time for Easter treats and you’ll find plenty of egg shaped excitement in our round up of activities. There’s Abington Park’s Easter Egg Trail and Spring Wreath making at Delapré Abbey. Animals in Need are holding their Spring Fayre on 31st March. In Milton Keynes the annual egg hunt at Milton Keynes Museum is running from 29th March to 1st April. At Oakgrove there’s the Parks Trust Easter Eggstravaganza and Emily’s Star egg hunt at Wolverton.

Even with all these activities, you could still support the Franklins £50 Challenge to raise funds for local charities. They’ve even enlisted the support of Nick Hewer, best known for his roles on The Apprentice and Countdown. Can you turn £50 of seed money into a significant donation?

8

You won’t want to miss Coleen Nolan this month who is ‘Naked’ in Northampton – sort of. She tells Sammy Jones all about the butterflies she still feels every time she performs. Supported by her son, Shane, you can join her at The Old Savoy for some ‘get up and dance’ music.

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust! These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords

are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been

he challenge grants teams £50 of seed funding, with the objective to grow this amount through various fundraising activities over a threemonth period. The 2024 challenge will run from Tuesday 20 February to Tuesday 21 May with the underlying aim of fighting hunger, fuelling wellness and changing local lives. Since it began in 2018, the Franklins £50 Challenge has raised more than £100,000 for local charities, showcasing the potential for collective efforts to bring about meaningful transformation.

Nick Hewer, who lives in Northamptonshire, said: “The Franklins £50 Challenge is a brilliant initiative to test your entrepreneurial skills and see how you could grow £50 seed funding into substantial funds for charities across Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes.” Andrea Smith, a partner at Franklins Solicitors, expressed gratitude for Hewer’s support and emphasised the firm’s aim to achieve record participation this year, further enhancing the challenge’s contribution to local causes. Eight charities from across Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire have been selected to benefit from the challenge: Cynthia Spencer Hospice, the Hope Centre, The Lewis Foundation, Northamptonshire Community Foundation, Willen Hospice, MK Act, Harry’s Rainbow and YMCA.

INTERVIEW

Col’s in the mood for singing!

Coleen Nolan will be getting Naked in Northampton this March, in a manner of speaking. She told Pulse’s Sammy Jones what’s on the musical menu... 8

S

he’s the Loose Woman with the quick wit and the empathetic nature, and she’s super confident. Or so we thought, but talking to Coleen Nolan she assures us that she struggles with confidence. “I am scared of everything. I have been doing Loose Women for something like 23 or 24 years, and before every show I get nervous,” she admits, “Even the Loose Women are like ‘I

March 2024 | NN Pulse Magazine | For the latest local news visit www.nnpulse.co.uk

can’t believe you still get nervous.’ But I don’t necessarily think nerves are a bad thing and it’s because whatever I set my mind to, I want to do it well.” Right now, Coleen is out on the road starring in her own theatre show, Naked, and those nerves are bristling. Incredibly, this is the first time she has stepped out solo. Which begs the question; ‘Why do it?’ and ‘Why now?’

INTERVIEW

“...because I don’t want to get to an age where I can’t do it and it’s a regret,” she considers, “Singing is what I grew up with and it is the love of my life in a way. “There is no denying I am scared to death,” she admits, “I sometimes wake up and think I’ll just get in my car and drive away somewhere, but equally I am excited and looking forward to it because it is not the end of the world. No-one is going to get hurt. “I don’t want society to say to me, ‘You are too old to be doing that now.’ You are never too old – if there’s something you want to do, just do it.” Worrying about the curtain rising every night is a drag, and she can’t even reach for a cigarette to have a different sort of drag; after a lifetime of smoking, Coleen stubbed the last one out before Christmas. “Oh you have no idea!” she says when we ask her how it’s going, “The times I have got in my car to run out and buy 1000 cigarettes is unbelievable with the stress!” she laughs, “...but I haven’t. It’s hard, I’ve been smoking since I was a kid, but I got such a bad chest infection at the beginning of December, and they were talking about, you might have COPD, or you might end up with emphysema. I was on inhalers and steroids and thought, ‘What am I doing?’ “I want to be around for as long as possible for my family, my kids and grandkids, so I thought ‘I need to stop’.” Naked is a concert with some nattering in between, not the other way around. Reaching for the mic and belting out an earworm is hardly a novelty for Coleen, who made her name as the youngest of family supergroup, The Nolans. “...every kind of girly anthem you can think of,” is the setlist promise, “I want everyone up dancing and singing, but obviously there will be bits in between where I speak, I am not just going to sing for an hour and a half. “I’d like to maybe take some questions from the audience, but the vast majority of it is a concert with a band and backing singers. “Some of these songs do have a meaning to me and fit into things that have happened in my life, whether it’s my marriages breaking down, or amazing things that have happened, or a song I used to dance round my kitchen to...” It will be a jukebox of banging tracks: “I do a bit of Cher, I’ve got Whitney in there, I’ve got Miley Cyrus, a girl band medley, another girl band instead of us, obviously I’ve got some Nolans stuff in there, a bit of everything...” There will still be a family connection in the show too – son Shane is supporting and might well join his mum for a duet. “We are so close anyway, but we also really bounce off each other, and he is a brilliant entertainer himself. He’s really, really good....” When it comes to having a good old chinwag, Coleen excels – it’s what Loose Women is all about, after all. Is there any subject that would make her squirm? “I think it depends on the timing of it. There’s no subject I’m scared of talking about, but, for example, before I started talking about my second marriage when it was coming to an end, I waited until it did come to an end, because I don’t think that would have been fair on me or him.

Coleen is looking forward to being on stage once again

“There is a time when it’s the right time, but as far as topics go, I am a bit of an open book. Obviously nowadays you have to be very careful about what you talk about, because we are a cancelling culture and you can say one thing that is slightly controversial and that’s you done.” Does that make you think before you speak? “It makes us all wary now. We were talking about this recently on Loose, I think it’s the 25th anniversary this year, and compared to 25 years ago, the things we could discuss openly then – even if you didn’t agree with someone’s opinion – you just can’t do that anymore to a degree.

I was always scared of upsetting people and said yes to things I didn’t want to do because I was too frightened to say ‘no’. All of a sudden I got to an age, probably only in the last two years, where I thought ‘I’m gonna learn to say ‘no’ and be ok with it.’

“In some ways it’s a shame, although I do think all the change that has happened has been for the better really, and it’s a learning process. “Even what I thought 25 years ago, I wouldn’t think that now, because you learn yourself and you grow, and if you can’t do that, then you should be cancelled! she says. Age is a big conversation starter on Loose Women, and for us all, but Coleen - who is nearly 60, but ‘I feel 25’ – has accrued wisdom aplenty during her days on planet earth. Recently, she’s learned how to say ‘no’. A little word, but using it can have a big impact. “I was always scared of upsetting people and said yes to things I didn’t want to do because I was too frightened to say ‘no’. All of a sudden I got to an age, probably only in the last two years, where I thought ‘I’m gonna learn to say ‘no’ and be ok with it.’ “I don’t intentionally ever want to upset people, but if I do, then I do, because I spent a lot of time where I would walk away and go ‘I’m not comfortable doing this’ or, ‘I don’t really want to do this’ but it makes them happy so I’ll do it. And I’m not doing that any more. “Losing a sister and having another one with brain cancer, you realise, ‘God, how fragile life is’,” she says, about doing what she wants to do. One of those things she is committed to supporting is The Real Full Monty annual television specials, which sees celebrities

INTERVIEW

Coleen and son Shane, who will be supporting her in the live show

stripping off to swell the coffers for cancer charities. If you tune in, you’ll laugh and cry. Guaranteed. “It is a really hard show to do because your emotions are everywhere, and it’s a lot of filming, it is hard work leading up to it; it’s a good two or three months of filming. “I love that even while I’m sitting watching it I have people messaging me saying, ‘I’ve just examined myself and I’ve found a lump and I wouldn’t have found it if you hadn’t reminded me to check.’ Loads of them text back and go it was just a cyst or whatever, and some people have said, ‘It’s cancer but I’ve caught it early, and I wouldn’t have, had I not watched the show. And that’s why I do it.” Coleen’s life is laid bare on Loose Women; her time in the spotlight, her personal life, her family’s brave battles with illness. Even the day to day business of feeding her pet goats. Seriously. These days she shares her wisdom working as an Agony Aunt on a national newspaper. “I like to think of myself more as an agony friend than an agony aunt,” she confesses, “Some people haven’t got friends or family members to talk to, or they just can’t talk to people. “I base it on my own life experiences, and what I would say to any friend of mine going through anything – and it’s always easier when you are not emotionally involved to give advice, but it’s really hard to listen to that advice sometimes; people did it with me and I was walking away going, ‘You don’t understand,’ but actually they were right. “I’ve had therapy loads of times throughout my life and it’s been brilliant. “You need somebody that has no preconceived ideas about you, or the person or people you are talking about. I find that a lot of the problems I get is because of the lack of communication between people who find it so 10

hard to talk; whether it’s to a partner, to kids, parents... they just can’t talk. “I find it hard to stop talking!” she giggles, “That thought is mind-blowing for me – ‘what do you mean you can’t talk?’” Quite rightly, she takes the role seriously. “I would never give somebody advice if they wrote to me and they were drug addicts or alcoholics or abusers or whatever, I would always direct them to the professionals, because that’s where I don’t have a right, I don’t know enough to deal with someone like that,” she admits, “But if it’s to do with relationships or kids or anything day to day life, menopause...I’ve been there and done it. I can only say how I got through something, and if that helps them, then great.” When it comes to her own problems, Coleen has to head to the magazine aisle in the supermarket to learn more. “I love going into Tesco’s and reading about my life in the magazines, and the things that even I didn’t know were happening! “Like you said, they will make a really big headline out of nothing. I saw one last week and it was something like, ‘Coleen; I can’t do this any more’ and I thought, ‘Jesus Christ, what can’t I do? I had to stop and read it!

Just to come out and forget your troubles for a couple of hours and to get up and dance and have a fun night out would do everyone good I think, and I’d love to provide that for everyone.”

March 2024 | NN Pulse Magazine | For the latest local news visit www.nnpulse.co.uk

“The only ones that upset me is if they have got it so wrong and it’s a defamation of character, or they really have taken something out of context that could be dangerous for what I do. Then I have a problem with it. “But if it is just gossip that has got a bit exaggerated that’s fine.” Now Coleen is saying ‘no’ more, she spends more time in her happy place at home, but the animal mad lady has her hands full there, too: “Four dogs, three cats, two goats and a pony,” is the current non-human tally. And a house move is on the cards: “I have bought a smaller house with a bit more land because I am animal crazy. Ciara (Coleen’s daughter) has had a pony since she was 10 years old and she’s 23 now, and I want to get the pony to the house, with a little friend. That has always been my dream. “I would love to open a small sanctuary. That’s on my bucket list, to open a sanctuary of some kind. I’ll look into that as soon as I move.” And the pecking order will change with the move - literally: “At the house I am moving to I am inheriting ducks and chickens...” But back to the here and now, and Coleen will bring Naked to The Old Savoy on March 2. “The climate we’re in at the moment is all very depressing. Just to come out and forget your troubles for a couple of hours and to get up and dance and have a fun night out would do everyone good I think, and I’d love to provide that for everyone.” And she does mean everyone – this ain’t just for the girls... “Oh god, no, the more men the merrier!” she laughs again, “I’m very open to men turning up as well!” > Coleen Nolan, ‘Naked’ comes to The Old Savoy on March 2. All’s fair in love and war Wilson Browne Solicitors expertly navigate divorce’s emotional and financial complexities. Their team offers clear guidance on asset division and settlements, emphasising transparency and tailored advice. They aim to simplify the divorce process, empowering clients to make informed decisions. This month, they delve into “All’s fair in love and war,” focusing on the nuances of divorce and asset allocation.

D

ivorce can be an extremely stressful experience for many people, involving the inevitable emotional upheaval of ending a long-term relationship, and the practical challenge of securing your future financial situation.

Once mediation has been considered, if it’s not possible to agree a financial settlement, divorcing couples are able to make an application to court, as to how any assets should be divided. Disagreements obviously occur regarding how assets should be divided (completely understandable in what can be a stressful and emotionally charged situation) which causes delays to the divorce which in turn, can lead to increased stress and ill-feeling. The court’s first consideration is to ensure that the needs of any minor children are met, which at the most basic level, means

ensuring they have a roof over their heads. In turn, it also means the primary carer of the children has a roof over their head. In some cases, the assets may not stretch beyond providing a home for the primary carer of any children, and as the primary carer will be responsible for looking after the children on a day-to-day basis, the court may award them a greater share of the assets if their situation/needs justify it. It is not uncommon to encounter situations where one party to a divorce enters into a new relationship and starts to live with that person, or even makes plans to marry them. In such situations, parties are required to disclose a summary of that person’s assets and income. Whilst the court does not have the power to make orders in relation to the new partner’s assets, they will still be a factor for consideration.

For example, if a party to the divorce had moved into a property owned by their new partner, there may be an argument that their housing needs are met and as such, the other party to the divorce may have a valid argument to receive a greater share of the assets in order to allow them to rehouse too. It is nearly always preferable for couples to reach an agreement on any settlement themselves – this saves time, emotional energy and a costly, drawn-out and adversarial situation. No two cases are the same and there is no scientific way of determining the outcome, so it’s essential to get advice early on.

If you need simplified advice or clear guidance with the divorce process, call us on 0800 088 6004. Alternatively visit www.wilsonbrowne.co.uk or scan the code to find out more about divorce and dividing assets. For the latest local news visit www.nnpulse.co.uk | NN Pulse Magazine | March 2024

The horrifying reality of trying to get an NHS dentist is a warning for Northampton’s residents

S

hocking scenes of hundreds of people desperately queuing to sign up for a dentist in Bristol are a warning sign for Northampton’s residents. As more practices stop accepting NHS patients or close altogether, hard-working people across our town face limited or unaffordable options.

disappointingly, the Prime Minister Rishi Sunak couldn’t say he would help our town.

I am very concerned that our town is becoming a dental desert. Speaking to my neighbours across the town, I’ve heard horrifying stories of people having to wait months in pain, or even resorting to DIY dentistry, when they either can’t afford private dental care or can’t access NHS dentist services.

It’s time for change in Northampton. It’s time for a fresh start and a return of NHS dentist services to our town. Labour has a fully costed and deliverable plan to fix dentistry in the UK. We know that, with people facing the highest tax burden in over 25 years under the Conservatives, there is no bottomless pit of money. Offering millions of theoretical places would be disingenuous and dangerous. But the plan offered by the Government this week does just that, and has already been described as not offering hope to millions struggling to access care by dentists.

Under the Conservative Party, dentistry isn’t working Whilst there was some fanfare over a Government announcement of a new Recovery Plan for dental care this month, the British Dentist Association has said the plan is “unworthy of the title” and that the Recovery Plan “is incapable of even beginning to honour Rishi Sunak’s promise to ‘restore’ NHS dentistry.”

It’s clear the Conservatives have run out of ideas and towns like ours will continue to be worse off.

Lamport Hall marks its 50th year as a Preservation Trust

2

024 marks 50 years since the charitable Preservation Trust was set up by Sir Gyles Isham, 12th Baronet to ensure the future preservation and care of Lamport Hall, gardens, parkland and estate. To celebrate this landmark year, the Hall will be putting on a series of events as well as launching a brand new exhibition and accompanying catalogue with contributions from staff, family, volunteers and trustees past and present, and academics and experts from around the world. The brand new exhibition will open a door on the past 50 years at Lamport and explain why it was so important for the Preservation Trust to be developed in the first place. With interactive elements, newly commissioned art and oral histories, it’s sure to give new depth to the visitors’ Dr Faustus knowledge of Lamport Hall. The accompanying exhibition catalogue provides a lovely souvenir for visitors. The exhibition is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays, from April to October.

There will also be a series of events throughout the year to mark this special occasion. Festivities begin on the 10th of May with a concert by musicians from Rugby School, the school attended by Sir Gyles when he was a boy. There will also be a return to the traditional study days previously hosted at Lamport. Four experts will be giving lectures on the 18th June and lunch is included. Lecturers are local author Neil Lyon, Dr Laura Engel from Duquesne University in the USA, Dr Megan Leyland from English Heritage and Dr Jane Eade from the National Trust. On the 27th July Lamport Hall will be hosting a 1930s cocktail party in a nod to the Hall’s short-lived use as a country club. There will be themed cocktails and canapes, dance demonstrations, a gramophone DJ and live jazz vocals. Dressing up in period attire is encouraged! Finally, on the 13th September they will welcome Oxford University Dramatic Society for a performance of Dr Faustus. Sir Gyles was President of the Society during his time at Oxford and performed this very play, so it will be an appropriate finale to celebration events.

Deene Park

Adeline, the Scandalous Countess

S

Laura Malpas explores the colourful life of Adeline, Countess of Cardigan and Lancastre

ometimes a historic character jumps from the page with such personality that they seem alive. Countess Adeline captured her memories of Victorian Society life in her autobiography ‘My Recollections’, written in such a vivid and breathless style that it feels like she is talking directly to us, and what tales she tells! Adeline Louise Maria Horsey De Horsey was born on Christmas Eve in 1824, to a wealthy family in Berkeley Square, London, the oldest of three children and the only daughter. A socially confident and intelligent child, 20

she was a quick learner, benefitting from having both her own French governess, and the opportunity to learn with her younger brothers’ tutors. Adeline was an accomplished musician, a graceful dancer, and remarkably pretty. As a child she was was welcomed into London’s finest drawing rooms for plays and parties, including occasions attended by the young Princess Victoria who enjoyed listening to Adeline singing Spanish songs accompanying herself on guitar.

Adeline around the time of her marriage to Lord Cardigan

At eighteen, awestruck Adeline was presented to the young Queen Victoria, who was only five years older. Adeline was delighted to attend the first fancy

LOCAL HISTORY dress ball given at Buckingham Palace. She was dressed as a pretty shepherdess and was much admired by both Victoria and Albert. Sadly, Adeline’s idyllic life ended the following year when her beloved mother caught scarlet fever and died. Adeline kept house for her father and found the official mourning period a difficult contrast from the gaiety of her former life. As an educated, young, beautiful, wealthy and well born girl she was considered quite the catch on the marriage market and she recalls with satisfaction the many proposals she received. Her father did his best to protect her, which proved difficult as they regularly attended many country house parties, balls and parties. Adeline visited Northamptonshire several times, recalling events held at Apethorpe and Deene Park. She acquired a reputation as an ambitious flirt, and the relish with which she shared the gossip and scandalous goings-on in her memoirs bears out her disregard of conventional behaviour. In 1848 she met Count Carlos Montemolin, heir to the Spanish throne. He fell passionately in love with Adeline, and she was dazzled at the prospect of becoming the Queen of Spain. The couple shocked Society when they became engaged, but when

Adeline in 1847, by John Henry Robinson

it became clear that Carlos would not be crowned, Adeline ended their engagement abruptly.

The Charge of the Light Brigade

Back at home with Papa, she saw a great deal of her father’s friend, the Earl of Cardigan whom she had known since a child. Cardigan was unhappily married to a divorcee, and had separated, consoling himself with amenable ladies. But he was enchanted by his friend’s beautiful and vivacious daughter. He invited Adeline and her father to a house-party at Deene Park and was smitten as soon as he saw her there. Despite being twenty-seven years her senior and married, Cardigan also dazzled Adeline. He was a Royal favourite, wealthy, and a war hero, having heroically led the infamous ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ during the Crimean War. Adeline found him fascinating and fell deeply in love with him too.

LOCAL HISTORY

It was highly improper, and Queen Victoria never forgave Adeline for it, but Cardigan began courting her, taking her for outings whilst unchaperoned. Lady Cardigan was terminally ill, and this bad behaviour caused much gossip upsetting Adeline’s father and brothers. They pleaded with her to stop, but she refused. She became Cardigan’s mistress, and Adeline began to be shunned by her Society friends, but it did not affect her happiness.

Adeline further incurred Queen Victoria’s displeasure by styling herself Countess of Cardigan and Lancastre using both her English and Portuguese titles. The Queen was offended because she herself travelled Europe incognito as the Countess of Lancaster.

Adeline circa 1888 Photograph by Herbert R Barraud

Within the year Lady Cardigan died, and they were free to marry. For propriety, they allowed some time to elapse before setting sail for Gibraltar where they married in the Military Chapel. In December 1858, Adeline, now Countess of Cardigan returned to Deene Park as its mistress, to be greeted by six hundred tenants on horseback accompanying the couple from the railway station to the House. This began the happiest ten years of Adeline’s life. The new Countess threw herself into country estate life with her husband. She especially enjoyed riding and hunting with the Quorn, Belvoir, Cottesmore and Pytchley, becoming a popular figure in Northamptonshire Society, less concerned with morals than London Society. Cardigan indulged his lively young wife, even building her a ballroom at Deene so she could party in style and kept her mounted on the most elegant horses to show off her graceful horsemanship. Sadly, this blissful time ended abruptly in 1868 when Lord Cardigan died after a fall from a horse. His body lay in state in the ballroom and was viewed by six thousand mourners. An elaborate funeral followed for the war hero with internment in Deene Church. Lord Cardigan was childless and left everything to his beloved Adeline for her lifetime. Although the estates were heavily mortgaged, she was proud of the improvements she made to the house and estate. Adeline loved Deene inside and out, even its ghosts. She wrote with pride describing the new stables and a riding school she built, and the restoration of Deene Church and the construction of the Brudenell family Chapel to house the grand tomb of her husband. She continued to live mostly at Deene for the rest of her life. 22

Lieutenant General James Thomas Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan 1797 - 1868

Widowed and wealthy in her mid-forties, the Dowager Countess now enjoyed the status of a courtesan. Queen Victoria’s society had not forgiven her for the scandal of her marriage to the Crimean war hero, but the Prince of Wales’s Set enjoyed her company. She decided to remarry and considered a proposal from Israel Disraeli, whom she had known since childhood. She rejected him because of his halitosis although she liked him well enough. Holidaying in Paris, Adeline met and married Don Antonio de Lancastre, a Portuguese noble. She enjoyed travelling with him in Lisbon and Paris before returning to Deene Park, apparently needing to attend to estate business. Don Antonio found the countryside uncomfortable, and they spent much of their marriage apart.

Adeline was widowed again in 1898, and now enjoyed her eccentricities to the full. Popular locally and generous with her tenants, she became something of a local tourist attraction, riding and cycling through the area wearing Lord Cardigan’s bright red military trousers. She enjoyed smoking in public, considered most unladylike, as were the steeplechases she organised through the estate graveyard. She continued entertaining at Deene, and famously scandalised her guests by arranging herself elegantly in her coffin, which she kept in the ballroom and asking to be admired. She frittered away the family fortune she had been left, and eventually had to sell off some of her possessions including the stables she had built. In her last years she dictated her book ‘My Recollections’ a best-selling volume full of scandalous gossip, remaining unrepentant to the last. Adeline died at her beloved Deene Park in 1915 and was interred in the church next to the love of her life, Lord Cardigan. The final words of her ‘Recollections’: ‘I have seen everything worth seeing, and known everyone worth knowing, and although I am sometimes inclined to say, ‘all is vanity’ yet I think life’s little vanities are the sauce picquante of existence’. LEGAL

Can I postpone the sale of the family home when separating? A look at Mesher and Martin orders.

NORTHAMPTON 29 Billing Road Northampton NN1 5DQ 01604 622101

hen a couple separates, the value of the family home is often the largest asset that they have to divide, and it can also be the most contentious. This can be for a multitude of reasons, for example, one spouse or partner may feel emotionally tied to the house, or you may be concerned about having to move children from the home they have grown up in.

KETTERING 18 Brooklands Court Kettering Venture Park Kettering NN15 6FD 01536 523434 bmtclaw.co.uk

‘While a clean financial break is normally what separating couples aim for, at times it may be appropriate to consider postponing the sale of the family home. This can be achieved through what is known as a ‘Mesher’ or ‘Martin’ order,’ explains Connor Williams a Litigation Executive in the family team with Borneo Martell Turner Coulston. What is a Mesher order? A Mesher order allows for the postponement of the sale of the family home until either a certain period of time has passed, or an agreed ‘trigger event’ occurs. It is used when there are minor children living in the family home, and it allows one of the spouses or civil partners to continue to reside there with the children. The ownership of the property is not impacted, and the spouse or civil partner remaining in the home does not ‘own’ the home outright. Trigger events typically include: • the youngest child of the family finishing full time education; or • the spouse or civil partner, who has remained living in the house, remarrying or cohabiting with a new partner for a set period of time (typically six months).

This article is for general information only and does not constitute legal or professional advice. Please note that the law may have changed since this article was published.

Once the order comes to an end, the family home will be sold. Then the balance of the proceeds of sale will be divided in line with whatever terms has been ordered or agreed. What is a Martin order? A Martin order is similar to a Mesher order in that it postpones the sale of the family home until an agreed trigger event

occurs. The main difference is that a Martin order does not relate to minor children living in the house. This order is typically used when there are either no children involved, or any children the couple had are already over the age of 18. Is postponement the right option? This decision will depend on your circumstances. In most cases, postponement will only be delaying a problem for you to deal with in the future. Delaying matters could mean having less of a working life left to secure a mortgage for a new property. Most separating couples now prefer to cut their ties and know where they stand financially. On occasion, a postponement may be the right option. For example, if you have very young children, you may not be returning to work until they are at school and postponing a sale could push forward the need to obtain a mortgage until a later date. You could also be tied into a good mortgage deal at the moment, which you would risk losing if the property had to be sold now. It is important to note that postponing the sale of the home is not the only option to enable you to stay in the house. Our family lawyers will be able to advise you on the viability of other options, such as offsetting your interest in other assets to retain the family home without your former spouse or partner remaining as an owner.

How can we help? If you are concerned over what might happen to your family home following separation, one of our family lawyers will be able to advise you on your options. For further information, please contact Connor Williams in the family law team on: 01604 622101 or email connor.williams@ bmtclaw.co.uk

Harpole’s hidden histories: Northampton dig unveils 1,300-year-old secrets Significant archaeological discoveries dating back 1,300 years have been unearthed at a housing development in Harpole, a find that experts anticipate will enhance their understanding of life and how people lived during the period.

A

n excavation in 2022 revealed fragments of teeth alongside an elaborate gold and gemstone necklace. Since then, new techniques have examined earth removed from the site, which led to the discovery of bones from the body, thought to be of a young adult. Conservators from Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) used a technique called micro-excavation to remove whole sections of earth from the site before completing the excavation in a laboratory under controlled conditions. “Our work on the Harpole Burial has really demonstrated the value of block lifting and microexcavating these types of features,” says MOLA’s conservator Riva Boutylkova. “We have been able to find and record details that may have been lost outside of the controlled conditions of the lab. This unlocks a world of possibilities for future

research and analysis, which will give us a much richer understanding of this extraordinary find.” MOLA specialists are continuing to piece together the story of the Harpole Burial. They hope to find out more about funeral rituals at the time, as well as learning about the person buried. The bones uncovered in the laboratory had been partially preserved by a crushed copper plate which was buried on top of the body. Experts say the burial is similar to those of other high-profile females. Osteologists now hope to find out more about where the person lived, and about their diet. The necklace has been cleaned and analysed, revealing a central cross and a smaller golden cross, along with garnets and Roman coins. Further examination of the materials is expected to provide insight into jewellery-making techniques at the time. The intricacy and high value of the necklace point towards it having

belonged to a senior figure in the Christian community. “While our role is to create new communities, we are pleased that this archaeological project has uncovered so much about past civilisations,” says Vistry South Central Midlands’ technical director Dan Oliver. “It is a privilege to have been involved in such an important project and we look forward to learning more as the research continues.” Following the initial discovery, the artefacts were reported to the coroner as potential treasure and the legal process is ongoing.

Why stop at just the one search? After all, there’s no need to put all your eggs in one basket, says Sammy Jones...

And while you search for those egg tokens, you get a wonderful tour of the history hub, too. This traditional family friendly event is the perfect way to spend some time – whether you are a fluffy chick, or an older bunny! “Let’s be honest, no matter how old we are, we are never too old for a bit of fun, and our egg hunt is definitely that,” said Museum director Bill Griffiths, “Watching family members and friend groups united in the search is great fun for us, and everyone enjoys collecting their treats at the end!” 28

As you ‘scramble’ around the Museum, you’ll get to enjoy everything the site has to offer; from fascinating examples in the Transport Hall, including a canal boat and a Penny Farthing bike, and in The Connected Earth Gallery you can explore the story of human communication - the Museum’s amazing collection of telephones always prove irresistible to visitors of all ages, and you can get hands-on with many of them. There’s more than a century of toy examples to peruse and play with in the Story of Childhood exhibit, too. Elsewhere, do a spot of window shopping in the Street of Shops, take a seat for a Victorian school lesson, and discover parlour games – the entertainment of choice in an era long before the small screen and smart phones ruled the world. You will even be able to pop to the family privy, where everyone could spend a penny at once! If the hunt leaves you all eggs-hausted, the Museum’s Granary Tea Room will have a selection of hot and cold drinks and tempting snacks to stop bellies from rumbling. Mushrooms Risotto INGREDIENTS Makes 2 portions Easy - Time 20 min 150g carnaroli rice 150g mixed mushrooms (I use frozen this time of the year to have a variation) 30g unsalted butter + 10g to ‘mantecare’ the risotto 1 clove garlic - not peeled but crushed 1/2 diced shallot - check my tip on how to ease this 500ml stock of your choice Salt and pepper - if required depending on the flavour of the stock Fresh chopped parsley

METHOD Step 1 In a heated frying pan add the 30g of butter and the crushed garlic, and let melt and flavour. When the butter starts sizzling around the garlic, add your mushrooms straight from the freezer and let cook for about 10 minutes. These will be added back a few minutes before finishing the dish. Remove the garlic and in the same mushrooms flavoured juices, add the shallot and let soften. Add the rice and let it roast. You will know when this is ready by moving the pan and the rice will sound ‘crunchy’. Step 2

Our recipes come from NN Pulse food writer, Sofia Gallo, an acclaimed local chef, food writer and teacher at Milton Keynes Cookery School. She has recently won the ICG Cooking Competition and was a contestant on BBC’s Masterchef.

From this stage on, start by adding the stock and lower the heat to a medium to low. Do not stir the rice and don’t be tempted until later in the cooking progress. You will notice the rice absorbing the liquid, but still keeping separated. Once there is only about 150ml of stock left, add the mushrooms back to the rice and finish the stock. You can now give it a stir and adjust seasoning if more is needed. Step 3 For the mantecatura, take the pan off the heat and add the 10g butter and any grated cheese of your choice. My preferred option is Parmigiano Reggiano. I serve this risotto with the addition of crispy oyster mushrooms coated in a homemade garlic dust. Buon Appetito!

Training can be 'tyre-ing'!

On your paws, get set, fetch! Animals in Need relies on a small army of people giving their time to help keep things going - and when it comes to dog training, Nathan Watson 'leads' the way.... He explained more to Pulse's Sammy Jones.

T

hose of us old enough to remember Barbara Woodhouse being a regular fixture on the small screen will remember the robust training methods she employed to train our four legged pals. Had she met the acquaintance of naughty pooch Fenton (hit YouTube if you don't know) then that viral video with the unsettled deer would never have happened. Famously, Barbara said that there were 'no bad dogs' only bad owners, and Nathan, founder of Dog Rehab agrees that any dog can be trained. 32

“...but there does have to be realistic expectations and every dog must be treated as in individual when we consider prognosis,” he said, “A 12-year-old dog who has been exhibiting a behaviour most of their life, could potentially be a trickier case than a two year old dog with a similar behaviour that has recently developed. Health concerns play a huge part in many behaviours; we know if we are unwell or in pain, we may be less tolerant with family, friends, and colleagues, so that often has to be ruled out, treated, or managed in dogs first, too.” His passion for training began back in 2011, borne from a personal experience. “I had previously adopted my Staffie, Bullseye, a beautiful dog who had some challenging behaviours to work with, which inspired me to begin learning about dog behaviour so that I could help him. The passion for dog training grew and I knew it was the path I had to take professionally,” he told Pulse. Throwing himself into this role, he completed a Foundation Degree in Applied Canine Behaviour and Training and a Bachelor's Degree in Canine Behaviour Management. The national media is delighting in fear grabbing headlines about dog attacks, and

there is no escaping the fact that there have been terrible fatalities. The XL Bully ban has seen a huge increase in the breed being handed to rescue centres, and euthanised. As a professional in the industry, how do you view the situation?

FEATURE “Banning breeds does not work. We know this as it’s the very reason we are where we are with the very sad XL Bully situation.” he says, “There are many brilliant dog owners who safely train and manage dogs of all sizes, including the more powerful breeds. However, there are people who want large dogs to use as threats, and when one breed gets banned, they will move on to another breed. “I expect we will see a rise in the number of incidents involving other large breeds over the coming years. The dog training and behaviour sector are currently completely unregulated, and this has given rise to many completely unqualified people offering their services and using methods that are quite frankly abusive, and potentially dangerous to the dog and the people around them.” Aside from working as a dog behaviourist, Nathan also works on the committee for the Pet Professional Guild (PPG) which was set up to advocate for ethical pet training. The global organisation are founding members of the UK Dog Charter, which was put together by many of the UK dog training organisations to ensure there are minimum standards in training and behaviour, to prohibit the use of any aversive methods and equipment including shock collars, prong collars and choke leads. The UK Dog Charter is an invaluable resource for owners wanting to find a qualified trainer, and to ensure those trainers are accountable. Progress is being made: “Shock Collars are due to be banned imminently, all being well, but there is a long way to go, and whilst we continue to see abusive methods promoted on platforms from TikTok to TV, we must continue to improve standards to ensure public safety.” Just like us two legged types, dogs are individuals too, and have their own quirks and struggles. Is it easier to train a big beast, or a tiny terrier? “It’s certainly easier to deliver a training treat to the mouth of a Labrador, than it is to a Miniature Dachshund who is only a few inches off of the floor, but then a Labrador is a lot stronger and has more potential to pull

a person over,” Nathan said, “I never know what a dog is going to be like until I meet them. They’re individuals and a huge part of the job is understanding that and training the dog in front of you. You have to be a problem solver!” When it comes to training a mutt, there is no set time frame – it's a case of how long is a dog lead! “The first few years are likely going to be the most full on, if you have a puppy you’re likely going to have the toilet training, biting, crying at night or when left, stealing things etc, and as they grow they may have a fear stage where things can become scary, then adolescence when impulsivity can be a challenge, so it’s definitely not a case of do a course then you're all set,” he promises. “You have to establish behaviours and maintain them, just like a weightlifter has to establish strength and then maintain it. There are always new situations that you may decide to train for too, and it’s important to keep a dog’s brain active. Training doesn’t always need to be useful, it can be for bonding and even help to reduce stress, maybe for you and your dog!” Nathan is a firm believer in giving back and regularly donates his time to Animals In Need, assisting with training of the animals who through no fault of their own find themselves waiting on new homes at the Little Irchester site. “Animals In Need do such amazing work,” Nathan says, “All of the staff, volunteers, and supporters put in so much time and effort to ensure they can help as many animals, both pets and wildlife, as possible. What they have to deal with every day must be so physically and emotionally draining. Charity founder Roy Marriott has just turned 75 and still works hard every day to save animals. Anything I can do to help, with a bit of advice or fundraising is a must for me.” One common reason people use as a reason why not to re-home from a rescue centre is, ‘We don’t know its temperament or background’.

Little Squirrel

“One of the great things is that you can and should get to meet them, walk with them, and start to build a bit of a relationship prior to the adoption,” Nathan advises. “There may be no major concerns at all, or there may be things that require work or management, but you have a chance to explore some of this beforehand. Of course, things can develop or appear later on, but support is there, and everyone has access to a free group support session.” What would you say to someone who is looking to rehome a rescue – what should they think about before introducing one into their family? “Think about the time you can give to a dog, not just in each day, but also the number of years, they could rely on you for 10 to 15 years or even more if you are lucky, so please think about what you can give in the long term; think about the size of the dog, their energy levels, and whether you will be able to hold the lead securely, this is so important!” Dogs are called man's best friend with good reason, but we need to be their best pals too. “Take time to understand your dog's needs, they are doing their best to fit into our world,” Nathan urges, “Set their world up for success; train the behaviours you want, notice all the great things they do, reinforce them regularly, and show them love.” As the owner of two strong-willed felines, we have to ask; 'Can cats be trained too?' “They can definitely be trained, but not by me!” Nathan laughed. HOME & GARDEN

DIGGING DEEP Gnome Sweet Gnome?

How does your garden grow?

I

T

o have gnome or not to have gnome? If that is the question posed to gardeners, you may hear some choice replies, because these little folks are incredibly divisive. They are loved by some and loathed by others, but the idea of small stone figures in our garden spaces is hardly a new thing, and actually dates back to Roman times. Indeed, Priapus, the ancient phallic god of fertility, was a regular feature in the gardens of the time. During the Renaissance period, gardens of wealthy villas sported groups of stone ‘grotesques’ including Punch style figures typically a metre tall and garishly painted. In Germany the history of these garden figures has become inextricably confused with the tradition of ‘little folk’ or dwarves who were believed to help in the mines and around the farm. Dr. Twigs Way ‘gnomes’ more than most about the little beings – the garden and landscape historian has even issued a book on the subject, Garden Gnomes: A History. Northamptonshire is home to what is believed to be the oldest surviving example. “Who brought the first gnome to England will probably never be proven, but the first to record using the figures in his garden was Charles Isham at Lamport Hall who by the 1870s had a series of gnome tableaux in amongst his giant rock garden,” Twigs said, “‘Lampy’, the sole survivor of the once numerous Lamport gnomes, now lays claim to being the oldest garden gnome in England and regularly attends gnome conferences around the world, with a suitably high holiday insurance of a million pounds! “Sir Frank Crisp at Friar Park in Oxfordshire was another ‘early acquirer’ of the garden gnome, with his grand country house garden housing several of the larger one metre tall gnomes by the late 1890s,” Twigs said, and they are a little bit rock n’ roll too: “It was Sir Frank Crisp’s gnomes that featured so prominently on the cover of the George Harrison album, All Things Must Pass,” she explained. 34

Twigs with one oversized pal

In the first decade of the 20th century gnomes became popular and high status features of country house gardens and venerable vicarages, but the reputation of the Germanic gnome suffered with the outbreak of World War I. Disney eventually revived the dwarfish fashion with their now classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. “In the 1970s a whole new gardening generation rushed to buy multi-coloured plastic gnomes dressed in football strips, beachwear and even disguised as Smurfs,” said Twigs, “Solar driven gnomes whistled and farted, and ‘naughty gnomes’ boasted areas of the gnomish anatomy that Priapus would have been proud. Perhaps not unconnected with the spread of gnomish undress, the late twentieth century also saw the much awaited arrival of the female gnome.” These days you can even get punk rock icons The Ramones and indie fellas Oasis in gnome form! Love ‘em or loathe ‘em? How does Twigs view the chaps and ladies in the red pointed hats? “I see gnomes in the context of the wide variety of features that have graced our gardens over the centuries as the height of fashion at the time but were later derided... until of course fashion turned again!” > Twigs will talk about ‘The Unexpected History of The Garden Gnome’ at Denton Village Hall in Northampton on Monday, March 11. Entry is free to members, £3 for visitors – all welcome. For more information call 01604 890875. > Garden Gnomes: A History is available through Amazon.

t’s March – a month of every sort of weather. Longer days, though, so time to remove greenhouse insulation and clean the glass and staging. Seed sowing of annuals can take place now. Fill a tray with multipurpose or seed compost, firm it and water it before sowing. Then cover the seeds, using a sieve, with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite before putting the tray in a warm place. We will sow tomatoes, cucumbers and beetroot in modules, as well as lettuces, rocket and sunflowers. Leave the can of water in the greenhouse overnight so that it is the same temperature as the compost in the morning. Towards the end of the month the sprouted first early potatoes may be planted, not in rows, we haven’t the space, but in large pots. We will put one, two, three or five tubers in each, depending on the size of the pot. We are going to grow Maris Javelin and Sharpe’s Express, such was our success last year. The overwintered fuchsias and pelargoniums are growing new shoots – I am taking some of them off as cuttings, cutting below a leaf joint, removing the lower leaves and inserting into fresh, fine compost in a tray or modules which are again dressed with vermiculite and then stood in shallow water which will be taken up into the modules. Spring is here – good luck! Ralph Westmoreland, Denton & District Gardening Club member > Denton & District Gardening Club is a small, friendly club which meets on a Monday evening every month. New members and visitors are always welcome. For more information please contact Margaret at m.pateman@yahoo.co.uk or 01604 890875

Black Magic H

eady, moody tones continue to play a significant role in our interiors, filling spaces with decadence and drama or adding a subtle but chic finish. If you wish to explore your “dark side” a little more this year, there are a multitude of tones from deep jet blacks to softer smoky charcoals that will help you absorb this trend into your home.

the relief of it. Add panelling, moulding or use a textured wallpaper. Equally, hanging pictures, mirrors or textiles will stop the wall looking one-dimensional by bringing depth and interest to your space, giving the eye lots of lovely aspects to rest on. Then on the other side of the room, balance the black wall with a piece of black objet d’art, just one item will be enough or a solo, black picture frame.

Black accents create impact. They add gravitas and dimension to a space, giving rooms a modern, elegant twist that sits well with the many interior design styles in vogue today. Just one or two accents repeated in each room can tie the scheme of a whole house together, providing a way of accessorising that is hugely versatile and ultimately very flexible.

If you think you might struggle to get it right, remember the trickiest of shades can often be the most impactful. Black is a bold choice for walls, but it is a tone that you can have a lot of fun with. Using black as a backdrop is a wonderful way to draw attention to a wall full of photographs or memories recalling life events or trips.

If you prefer to use accents of black, then tread carefully. High-gloss, shiny furniture can be overpowering if the rest of the scheme is light and matte; and grouping too many black accessories together will form a block of colour that your eye is drawn to. This could be to the detriment of the rest of the room if black isn’t used in other areas.

www.bestheating.com

If you have a small room where you are already fighting a lack of natural light, then why not embrace this by painting the entire room black? The effect can be calming and softening, creating a cosy and welcoming space. Equally, if you have a room filled with natural light, using black doesn’t have to undo this. Black shiny tiles in a bathroom will reflect the natural light rather than absorbing it - just ensure you carefully balance the black with other subtle touches in the room.

A feature wall may look flat if there’s no greenery in front of it or pictures mounted, but when paired with a white ceiling and white woodwork it produces a striking contrast. The key is not only to have a black wall, but to alter

Wood is a wonderful material to help soften a black scheme. Slatted, acoustic panels are a hot choice everywhere at the moment and there are lots of lovely tones to choose from and many different ways to incorporate them. Rosie Kinsella Interior Designer 01604 751262 www.millsandkinsella.com 36

Black window frames are ideal if you want to bring attention to a great view. They add drama when paired with light walls and encourage the eye to be drawn to the sight of the garden or view beyond. Inside the house, crittal doors can

be used to separate a room, the black frames define the end of the room you are in, but the eye can continue, seeing through the glass to the next space. In a bathroom, the same crittal frames can be used to create a shower wall or bath screen. The thin lines of black frames can be used to highlight artwork, photographs and mirrors. This works particularly well in neutral schemes where the black helps the pictures stand out from their background, but they can be equally as effective in brighter palettes where the black then defines a place at which the eye can stop and rest from a wall of vibrant colour. Slim black silhouettes and shapes can easily be found to permeate your décor, carrying the theme around the house. Line drawings are excellent for this, as well as rugs with linear designs. Consider prints or rugs featuring artwork by Matisse, Picasso, Kandinsky and Klee, all of whom were known for the beauty of their drawn lines. Kitchens and bathrooms can sometimes look stark, owing to their strict lines and cold materials. This can be offset with a splash of colour or the use of contrasting textures. Metal, wood, marble and ceramic tiles are all natural materials regularly found in our kitchens and bathrooms. Ceramic tiles and wooden accents will soften the look of metal and marble, they’re ideal combinations. And for me, this is why black taps and faucets work so well in these rooms. By adding small black accents, you can elevate the design of your interiors without spoiling them. Black has the ability to contrast with and complement most other colours. It’s the ideal partner if you’re unsure of what to choose.

ave you explored the vibrant world of Urban Art? Taking inspiration from urban settings, graffiti and street art, urban art brings these elements together to explore social and political issues with urgency and style. We at the Rose Gallery are lucky to host the works of a number of exciting contemporary urban artists; wonderful creatives who use a variety of media to share their message. Meet Maxim - Versatile and Talented Maxim is one such incredible talent who’s been building his portfolio and presence since his first exhibition, ‘Lepidopterror’ in 2011. Also known as MM (Double M), Maxim’s work celebrates contradiction with pieces combining the beautiful and the sinister, the polished and the chaotic. Maxim is no stranger to success, having been one third of the band The Prodigy since 1990. In this time he has travelled extensively, sharing the music of their seven albums, picking up awards and celebrating incredible chart success. With the band known for fierce lyrics and a vibrant style, it’s exciting to see this same energy in Maxim’s artwork. Making the most of unusual media presenting on bone china crockery or mutilated boards - and random objects

- bullets, blades and pills - Maxim allows his creative process to evolve without too much planning. Strongly influenced by the surrealism of Dali and Bosch - among others, in his own work we see objects placed in unexpected contexts and images which are thoughtprovoking and challenging. Through this potentially dark and negative imagery however, we can see that Maxim believes in positive outcomes. He brings about some of these positive outcomes himself, supporting a wide range of charities since 2012 by donating artworks or raising funds. He has supported Childline, the NHS, Shelter, Young Minds (the mental health charity), and research into Breast Cancer. “In music you are always aiming for perfection, you’re never 100% happy. Art is much more liberating than that; even mistakes can be beautiful.” (Maxim)

Gonna be a t u o k a e r B m a Bedl The Scarecrows will be drumming up the audience on Sunday

Bedlam pics: Cachi Oms

What started in our local pubs more than 25 years ago, has grown and evolved into the UK’s premier festival for fans of psychobilly. As the 2024 instalment of Bedlam Breakout prepares to go live at the Northampton Roadmender, festival founder Tobe Wright spoke with Pulse’s Sammy Jones about his passion for the sounds...

“T

he scene was pretty hit and miss in the mid-noughties so we decided to do something to keep it going,” Tobe said, recalling the idea to put on a series of shows at the Racehorse. Plenty has changed since those days; the venue still exists, but has been spruced and relaunched as The Black Prince, of course, and what started as the occasional live show is now a full-on weekender hosted at The Roadmender. Bedlam is all about the psychobilly, rockabilly and garage sounds, and Tobe’s ears were tempted by the genre while he was at school. “I was mainly into punk, but a rockabilly friend played me an album by the Meteors, I think 40

in around 1981. Within a couple of years I had drifted away from the punk stuff and the psychobilly scene had taken over my main love for music...” So revered is the Bedlam bash that people arrive via planes, trains and automobiles, travelling from around the world to enjoy the event. How does that feel? “Great,” is the obvious answer, “When we see how much fun people are having, it’s a reminder of why we do it all. Personally, I find it slightly awkward that people know me, as I am a quiet person who likes to sink into the background, but I do feel a great sense of pride in what we have achieved and it’s a small cross to bear if it means this underground music scene keeps going because of the graft we put into it.” Perhaps the continued success of Bedlam is that its creators are passionate music fans themselves. This isn’t about making a quick buck, but supporting the scene. It’s about

Guana Batz headline on Sunday night

MUSIC

a community of like minded music lovers indulging those passions. Tobe met his wife through the scene and his social network has been enriched by the friends he has made over the years through Bedlam. While the festival has a hardcore contingency who book their hotel stay even before the line-up has been announced, newcomers join the party year on year. And there’s lots for the taking. “The Friday night is a great mixture of styles and we tend to have a big name rockabilly band headline, but the main two days of the festival have bands from around the world, psychobilly being the mainstay, but we mix in some rockabilly bands and some great garage punk too. “We promote the newer bands on the scene to get them noticed, and some of the smaller bands from abroad to give UK fans a chance to see what other countries have to offer.” Bedlam attendees will need more than just beer money though, with a range of stalls selling all kinds of merchandise across the weekend; from 50s homeware and t-shirts, to jewellery and handbags, and that’s aside from all of the Bedlam merch and music that is sold at the events and online throughout the year, to help fund the event. Oh, and after you’ve enjoyed the music, what could be better than enjoying some more? “After each day at the Roadmender, we host after show parties at The Bear and have bands playing there until the early hours. It is only accessible once the doors close at The Roadmender and you must be a wristband wearer, so it keeps our crowd together and is a free bonus for them.” Trying to organise this beast of an event is an all-year round job, and so the bash which used to be held twice yearly has been streamlined to one big weekend. It makes things more manageable for the team of 10 responsible for staging it. No-one who has ever juggled the many responsibilities of running an event like this would begrudge them the change. There is always so much to do: from sniffing out new bands, to running the website, and advertising. And let’s not start on the event days themselves. Like we said earlier, it’s a labour of love. “We’re like one big happy family... most of the time,” Tobe says with a laugh. This year’s offering will be an emotional one though, due to the recent loss of one of the

crew members and a best friend to many, Steve Buckland, known to many as Tiny, but Bedlam will also serve as the perfect place to celebrate his life. And music-wise, things are shaping up just fine. “We have a fantastic range of old and new bands, including Spunny Boys who headline on Friday, and Mad Sin from Germany are one of the biggest psychobilly names from mainland Europe. They will headline on the Saturday with Irish bands Spellbound and the Klingonz. “Guana Batz headline the Sunday night and have been rocking since the early days, with main support from French psychobilly band the Astro Zombies. “It’s such a varied festival, with bands from Finland, France, Germany and Holland playing over the weekend. If you like anything from rockabilly to punk, psychobilly to garage trash, you’ll find it all at the Bedlam weekender, with top DJs playing too.” ‘It’s a knees-up that adds a splash of colour to Northampton on a cold March weekend,’ the event blurb says, ‘An energy crackles the air as beer flows, old comrades catch up and new friendships are forged...and that’s even before a note’s been played!’ It sounds mighty friendly, and it is just that, assures its founder. “I would say to any newcomer, ‘Even if you come on your own, it won’t be long before you get talking and drinking with people. It is a non-judgemental festival, and very welcoming. All we ask is that any attitudes are left at home. Come on in and enjoy the madness of it all!” Tobe invited. “At the end of the day we are all gig goers, we are just daft enough to organise a big party for the crowd to come to. If we weren’t doing it, we’d be going to it as punters!” > To book tickets for Bedlam Breakout on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 click to bedlambreakout.com > Want to attend the Friday night warm-up? MUSIC

Go Into the Void with Sabbath imitators

W

ith zero chance of seeing the real mccoy play live again, fans of Brummie based genre creators Black Sabbath have no choice but to embrace the tribute thing to get their live fix these days, and SBD Promotions has booked Sabbra Cadabra (March 2) to give it to you. They will be cutting loose a fiery set of Ozzy era excellence with a two-hour long set. Get set for masterpieces including Planet Caravan, Fairies Wear Boots, Sweet Leaf and Paranoid. “The finest of the Black Sabbath tribute bands, Sabbra Cadabra were magnificent,” said Jim Simpson, following a show, “As Black Sabbath’s original manager, I can vouch for their uncannily authentic performance, taking me right back to the ‘Henry’s’ of 1969.” SBD hooks up with Headcharge Club (March 22) for a night of new sounds over at The Lab on Charles Street. Dig The New Breed will deliver ‘dream pop from inner space’ from Earthworm, ‘shoegazey alt-rock’ from Rebecca, jam band Woof, and Latent Dream with their ‘ShoeTown big tunes.’ It’s a musical menu with plenty to tempt you, and if you buy them in advance, tickets will take just a fiver from your funds. You can barely buy a pint for that these days. The same night, SBD will present Scottish composer and multi-instrumentalist, C Duncan. They say that your early years inform your later

years, and you need look no further than Chris for a perfect example; he was raised by two classical musicians, studying piano and viola before reaching for guitar, bass and drums while a teenager. Later, he studied music at the Royal Conservatoire in Scotland, before working on his debut album at home. 2015’s Architect would go on to be a Mercury Prize nominated release. In 2016, his Twilight Zone-inspired follow-up, The Midnight Sun made a shortlist for the Scottish Album of the Year. Chris hit the road with Elbow, playing on both sides of the pond, and then headed to Elbow’s studio to work on his third opus, Health, which also made the shortlist for Album of the Year. A fourth album, Alluvium was released in 2022. This will be a special show in the perfect intimate setting. Speaking of which, Russian psycho-rock players Gnoomes will be welcomed back to The Black Prince (March 30). The last time they were here, Gnoomes had just released their fourth elpee, Ax Ox, which has been described as their ‘most explicitly Russian album to date,’ and they made the decision to sing in their native tongue. They made that choice to support an evolving and inspiring scene at home. But it is also a release that tells of the band’s fractious relationship with its home country.

At The Black Prince this month (from top left) Sabbra Cadabra, Gnoomes and (below) C Duncan

“The last five years before the pandemic are considered to be the golden times for our music community” said Sasha Piankov, speaking last year, “It was a beautiful embryo, which could grow into a very interesting creature, but it was simply killed by the stupid plans of the particular people. Many artists have already spoken out, and they’re not supporting this senseless war, but they get quickly shut up by the government.” Sasha and his wife Masha were both forced to leave their country when mobilisation was announced, a scenario repeated over and over by fellow musicians and artists. The music prevails, and you can’t fight the feeling of unity that music stirs – and it will do just that at this show, which comes with support from London quartet Holy Springs and their fusion of psychedelic influences and love of lo-fi guitars and keyboards. AV Sunset, with one foot in Milton Keynes and the other in the ‘fampton, will bring instrumental rock to the stage, and you can hear that on their debut album, Disconnections. > Get your hands on tickets for all Black Prince gigs at sbdpromotions.com or skiddle.

Step On for Mondays tickets Shaun Ryder and Bez break away from the ‘goggleboxing’ and get back to the day job, with a visit to The Derngate on March 28. fter more than 60 years of delivering academic success to children internationally using paper-based programmes in local centres via specialist Instructors, Kumon has developed their unique worksheets in a digital format, using technology to make them even more accessible and convenient for students to study using their tablet and stylus via KUMON CONNECT. The stylus allows the child to hand write their calculations and answers just as they would a pencil. The process of writing by hand and making corrections on the page has always been a key part of the Kumon Method. For the child it means they’re able to study with focus and speed, and when their submitted work is marked electronically, they can make any corrections swiftly and neatly. They use KUMON CONNECT in class just as they can with paper worksheets and continue their study at home independently on days in between class. Parents have access to their child’s progress and achievements allowing them greater insight into their child’s growth and enabling them to fully support their learning. The

digital service means the Kumon Instructor can replay the student’s work, allowing them further insight into their thinking and the methods they used, truly connecting them both in class and when they’re studying at home. They can send a message of praise or encouragement when required and specifically adjust or set new work for them. This individualised approach to a student’s study is at the heart of the Kumon Method, and KUMON CONNECT further facilitates this connection. Mr Masahiro Shimizu, President of Kumon Europe and Africa, said: “We believe that the relationship between parents and the Kumon Instructor is important

for children’s growth, and we aim to provide a learning service with a human touch that allows students to connect deeply using digital technology. The tried-and-tested worksheets are carefully and individually assigned for each child. Being able to offer the Kumon Maths and English programmes digitally means, with KUMON CONNECT, every student’s Kumon Instructor is always by their side.” You can find out more about studying Kumon on a tablet and benefits to children’s study by contacting with the Instructor between classes at your local Kumon Northampton South Study Centre. MOTORING

Thinking of going electric in 2024? Bells Motor Group outline the five things you need to know when buying your first electric car.

W

ith the electric car revolution in full swing and only set to get bigger in 2024, the number of people swapping their petrol or diesel car for an electric vehicle is increasing rapidly. Yet, despite predictions that electric vehicles will account for 25% of all new passenger car sales in the UK in 2024*, many people still have some niggling uncertainties around purchasing an electric car. To answer these questions, Bells Motor Group is providing their top tips to debunk the myths and help drivers figure out exactly what they need to charge ahead with their first EV. Clive Bell, Managing Director from Bells Motor Group said: “Drivers are welcome to drop in and speak with our expert team about purchasing their first electric car at any time, but for those too busy to visit, we’ve included our five top tips to help you start the new year off in the right gear.”

1. Work out what you actually need “It’s often easy to pick your new car based on aesthetics alone, but it’s important to make sure that the car you’re looking at fits all aspects of your lifestyle, too. Size is an important consideration. Do you need plenty of space in the cabin and the boot, or is one more important than the other? Generally speaking, the larger the car, the larger the battery will be, and so this will take longer to recharge.

The interior of the Volvo EX30

“If you’re someone who has a long commute to work every day, or if you regularly go on long-distance trips, you’ll definitely need to factor in a car that is smooth and comfortable to drive, efficient and has a good electric range. Many people tend to The Volvo EX30 looks striking in Moss Yellow overestimate how much they actually drive – on average, the majority of people drive only around 20 “Chances are, if you buy an electric car, miles a day.** Taking a detailed look at what at some point you’ll need to use public you use your car for on a daily basis and charging spots, too. To save yourself getting observing how many miles you add each caught out, it’s a good idea to look at the week are great ways of staying realistic with different public charging facilities available your requirements.” and get to grips with them – there are almost 54,000 public charging points in the UK****, so have a look at downloading 2. Budget to spend less on maintenance charging provider apps so you’ll be ready when you need them.” “One of the main selling points of an electric car is that maintenance is generally much simpler and cheaper than that of a petrol 4. Know your budget or diesel car. With fewer moving parts in an electric car, there is less to go wrong, “Making sure you have a good idea of your meaning maintenance costs could be up to available budget is incredibly important – half the price you’re used to.*** that way, we as retailers can help you find “Thanks to regenerative braking, which the most suitable, affordable option for you, in many instances uses the electric motor and you know your limits. to help slow the car rather than the brakes “Don’t be put off by the initial upfront cost themselves, the brakes on your new car will of an electric vehicle – electric cars tend to be exposed to less wear and tear, meaning cost slightly more to purchase than a petrol they won’t need to be replaced as often***. or diesel car, but the costs of running are “While electric cars do still need annual MoT much lower, with the likes of fuel, tax and checks, as with all cars, this is generally a maintenance being much cheaper.”***** pain-free experience, with exhaust emissions tests being a thing of the past.”

5. Go to see the car in person

3. Get set up for charging “We know that charging is the number one deterrent from people purchasing an electric vehicle – with so many different options and types, it’s no wonder! “It’s worth doing your research and familiarising yourself with the charging process before purchasing, which may include getting a home charging point fitted. Nearly every electric car owner will find a home charging point beneficial, because charging your car overnight is the most timeeffective option to ensure you’re fully charged for the day ahead – and there’s no waiting around because you and your car will be recharging your batteries overnight together.

“We would always recommend popping into your local retailer to have a thorough look at the car you’re considering – whether you’re certain you know what you want, or you’re stuck between a couple of options, it’s a great way to make sure you’re confident in your decision. “We strongly believe that buying a new car should be an exciting time, not a stressful one, and so we’re thrilled to see 2024 off to an electrifying start!” *Information from GreenMatch in 2023 **Research by Car Analytics in 2023 ***Research by EDF in 2022 ****Research by Zapmap in 2023 *****Information from RAC in 2023

P

lease accept my apologies for having inflicted the trials and tribulations of the O’Hara Household Move upon you, dear readers. I promise I won’t do it again. Well, when I write promise, what I really mean is, I will try not to do it again. Okay, let me be plain and open about this: I will endeavour to avoid not trying to eschew the imposition of woe and trouble, in the form of the written word, on, at or via any third party, on the readership of Pulse. The reason I am loathe to make such a promise isn’t because I am seeking election to High Office somewhere. No, it is because the grown-up members of the O’Hara Household didn’t fully appreciate what they were told about the property they purchased. My desire is to pass on what we are suffering to ensure the Pulse readership is not similarly hurt. Advised: Surface water collects in the garden. Simple, and nothing of much import when presented in such a short and concise manner. Unfortunately, there was more to it. For instance, most of the garden is woodchip and it turns into a pond when three or more raindrops collect together and identify as rainfall. The “surface water” can be four inches deep. When you add that we have dogs, it becomes a bigger problem and is a nightmare. What is supposed to be a last-minute ejection of the dogs immediately prior to bedtime can become a protracted episode involving towels, lest the dogs be forced to sleep the night in wet beds. Something had to be done. The recent storms both illustrated the

nature of the problem and gave the local ducks somewhere to frolic. It wasn’t going to be our hoped straightforward fix involving the laying of an artificial lawn or slabs. The water needed to go somewhere other than the garden. Shouting at it wasn’t working and the neighbours were beginning to talk and give me looks. Clearly, some proper groundwork was going to be required. Digging out lots of earth and replacing it with something less impervious to water was needed, along with doing magical and mysterious professional things resulting in excess water making its way to the drains helpfully located at the wrong end of the garden.

Professionals needed to be asked what would be the best resolution.

Professionals needed to be asked what would be the best resolution. My first step was to bodge a temporary fix. Off-cuts from an artificial lawn were laid on a concrete hardstanding that didn’t join in with the rest of the garden’s game of hiding under the water. Then bamboo sticks left behind by the former owners were stuck in the ground to serve as a makeshift ‘fence’ between the new ‘lawn’ and the unexpected swimming pool. At least bedtime no longer requires the use of towels. I now wanted three or more professionals to come in to assess and quote the likely cost of a proper solution. Luckily a copy of Pulse fell to hand and I found the experts…

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22

TAURUS April 21 – May 21

VIRGO August 24 – September 23

The symbol for your sign is two fish swimming upstream and downstream, and it must feel as if you are doing both simultaneously! Indecisive, much? The recent full moon will have presented you with several opportunities to sort things out, but I’m afraid that with so many planets in your sign as the next new moon approaches on the 9th, getting lost in the mix is likely.

Simply being there for people in your life who are hopelessly adrift right now is where you need to be. Caring is neutral; it’s not judgemental, so you can listen to some hopelessly unrealistic ideas and notions and just empathise with the person behind those notions. It is often called ‘holding space’, and I think that’s a constructive way of dealing with these situations.

Leos appear to be struggling at the moment as the Aquarius challenge pokes at their egos and self-esteem (however much they try to hide it or deny it!). You are probably being quite demanding and testing the patience of people who are forced to listen to you. Empathy may be scarce, even though I’m sure you pride yourself on being a real empath.

Attempting to knit fog is almost always impossible, so I wouldn’t even try. You will find yourself treading water this month, although ideas may be forming for future changes. However, this is no time for action. Use this period to cultivate some personal practice like Pilates or the more vigorous forms of yoga, where you can expend your energy while fostering a calm mind.

You will continue to be disrupted, and the ground beneath your feet is shifting. It’s muddy, and you slip and slide all over the place as you try to gain some traction. But sometimes, you just have to yield to the way things are and let yourself go with the flow for the moment. Rigidity will not serve you well this month, but spring is not far off now, and that is when you will be able to find some stability.

The recent full moon in your sign likely helped you address a few practical issues, but finding order with Neptune in the deep blue depths of the ocean is definitely not on the agenda this month! If you can manage to break lifelong habits and let go, it’s best to swim with the fishes until the end of the month, by which time, spring will officially have arrived.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21

LIBRA September 24 – October 23

Your thoughts will be scattered this month. It’s almost as if you will be inundated with them, and you should treat all of them with a degree of scepticism until the seasons transition into an Aries-led spring later in the month. The new moon on the 9th will be particularly challenging, so find ways to calm your mind and observe what surfaces without jumping to conclusions.

Now is the month for dreams, as the time for action arrives with the onset of spring at the end of March. Dare to dream, and dream big, at the new moon on the 9th March, when all sorts of options and ideas will come into view. Relationships and romantic encounters may be a bit unusual and not what you expect, but at least they’ll be interesting! See where they lead but tread carefully.

You are bound to be affected personally by some, if not all, of the massive changes taking place this year. Not everyone will be equally affected on a personal level, but you will certainly feel it if you are an Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio, or Taurus. An astrological reading of your birth chart can help you understand how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you during 2024, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. I wonder how you Sagittarians will fare this month. You can be quite opinionated, but the strong water energy in March may leave you feeling less confident than usual. The peak of this will be around the new moon on the 9th, so be on the lookout for how things unfold then. Better energies for you kick in at the spring equinox on the 20th, which should reinvigorate you.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 20

Your sign is being somewhat left behind now. Pluto is in Aquarius, and all around you, life is marching to a different rhythm. The spring Aries energy will challenge you to join in or get left behind, so you may feel compelled to commit to some new things that make you a bit uneasy. Do you dive in, or just dip a toe in the water? The choice is yours!

AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19

You may have been charming and eccentrically attractive at the end of last month, but things are changing quite rapidly now. The world of exciting ideas in your head shifts to the murky underwater world of Pisces, where nothing is quite as it seems, and uncertainty reigns. Sink, swim, or float? Try all three, and you should be okay!

you and your life. It will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now, and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year. You may find exciting and out-of-the-ordinary ideas and thoughts coming to you, but some may be quite unsettling. The key here is to examine what makes you so resistant to them. This month at least gives you the chance to ponder them in your mind without committing to any course of action until you’re ready.
