t’s amazing what you can achieve when you work together. Four of our local Lions Clubs and the Milton Keynes Hospital Charity have funded over £5,000 worth of snacks and refreshments for patients and families using the MKUH Cancer Centre. What a great project and well done to everyone involved.

Continuing the heritage theme, of course, this month we can all enjoy the Heritage Open Days. It’s grown a lot since the very first event in 2006 and there are dozens of places to visit between the 8th and 17th. There’s something for everyone from the Victorian station house and booking office at Ridgmont Station to guided tours of the MK Rose.

If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll be delighted to know that the Butterwick Bakery has opened a new store at Midsummer Place. Their delicious treats are freshly baked each day – it would be rude to visit the Boulevard and not try one! You won’t want to miss the Big Boulevard Bash on the 2nd September when you can check out the other new eateries too. There will be plenty to see and do including live music, kids’ activities and face painting.

Last, but certainly not least, we’re very pleased to launch our redesigned website, mkpulse.co.uk. It’s your one-stop hub for local news, stories, features, reviews and guides. It’s perfect for the latest news and information about Milton Keynes and North Bucks. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Enjoy the last and the best of summer.

Lions roar into action for local cancer patients and help raise money for Milton Keynes Hospital Charity

Four local Lions Clubs have been working with Milton Keynes Hospital Charity and funding the provision of snacks and refreshments for patients and families using the MKUH Cancer Centre.

In an historic move, clubs from Milton Keynes Central, Bletchley, Newport Pagnell and Olney and Stony Stratford came together in 2021 to collaborate on the project and have so far funded over £5,000 worth of supplies.

Lion Bharat from the Milton Keynes Central Club said: “The Lions carry out projects to support the local community and we are very proud of our association with the hospital and the work we have done to improve the experience of local cancer patients.”

Charity said: “We are so grateful to the Lions for all of their support and dedication. The feedback we have received from the cancer centre team about the difference the snacks and refreshments make is

wonderful. It’s a very special thing for them to do.”

Be ‘that person’ for Kat.

Can you think of a person who helped you become who you are today? By supporting YMCA, you could be ‘that person’ for someone else.

Someone like Kat, who came to YMCA after years of homelessness and sofa surfing. She had an incredibly difficult childhood, which led to mental health issues and substance misuse in her teens. When we first met her, she told us she felt at ‘rock bottom’.

But today, Kat’s life is completely different. She lives independently in a flat of her own, has had mental health support and built a healthy network of friends, and is taking part in employment coaching to find work that gives her purpose. She is safe and supported, just as she deserves to be.

Every year, YMCA supports thousands of young people like Kat. Young people who simply haven’t had a fair start in life. We stop at nothing to ensure they get the opportunity and acceptance they need.

This is the impact you could have with a gift in your Will to YMCA. By supporting us in this special way, you can be ‘that person’ who helps someone like Kat transform their future. It’s a gift that will stay with them for life.

Is a Kitchen re-spray the new way to update and save?

Many of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially since we have had more time at home. But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.

Now local company FX-SPRAY MK is offering a complete professional paint spray service for kitchens. It is a quick and simple process that leaves your kitchen looking brand new, says FX-SPRAY MK. The company removes and sprays 90 per cent of the kitchen off site, which means that very little work has to be done in your home, in turn meaning minimal disruption. An average kitchen can be completed within a week and home owners continue to use it during the process.

FX-SPRAY MK only use specialist products and having the latest spray equipment means the company delivers that brand new factory finish. A colour matching service to all major paint brands gives a huge choice - you can even go with a two-colour scheme.

“Can any kind of kitchen can be refinished or is respraying just for solid wood?” As long as your kitchen is in reasonable condition, FX-SPRAY MK can refinish it., even carrying out minor repairs and changing handles as part of the process.

FX-SPRAY MK also treats doors, windows and furniture. For more information or a free quote, email jason@fxfinishing.co.uk or visit www.fxfinishing.co.uk

Why replace when you can refinish?

Hampstead Gate Day Nursery scoop top eco-accreditation

There was cause for celebration at Hampstead Gate Day Nursery in Milton Keynes as proud children and colleagues learnt that they had received another prestigious eco-accreditation.

After scooping two ‘Green Flag’ awards with distinction as part of the international Eco-Schools programme over the past two years, pre-schoolers from the setting on Eelbrook Avenue were delighted to add a third to their impressive repertoire, following a sustained environmental project and curriculum of green topics, involving children of all ages.

The accolade, which is the highest achievement in the international programme, recognises sustainable initiatives in nursery, which include growing herbs and vegetables, creating habitats for wildlife, crafting with natural and recycled materials and litter picking sessions, as well as enterprises such as sponsoring endangered turtles to learn more about marine life.

Hampstead Gate Day Nursery Eco-Representative, Rachael Wright explained;

“We are committed to giving our children the best possible future and looking after the environment plays a huge part in that. Our preschoolers are hugely enthusiastic about the activities on offer and have a great deal of care for the planet which is incredible to see.”

Childbase Partnership has recently been named ‘Early Years Provider of the Year’ by Keep Britain Tidy for earning the ‘Green Flag’ award in every single nursery setting.

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Service With A Smile.

Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have

any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window

once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

‘It’s like being a detective of the past...’

Tabatha Barton is the archaeological curator and collections conservator at Milton Keynes Museum– a position she took on at the start of 2019. But what does the role involve?

Sammy Jones spoke with her about the day-to-day tasks and the importance of preserving our new city's ancient history...

Tabatha's love of history has been present for as long as she can remember.

“When I was about four years old I told my parents that I wanted to be an archaeologist but it was another couple of years before I was actually able to spell the word!” she recalls with a smile, “I’d grown up with a lot of books about dinosaurs, ancient Egypt, and world mythology, so the past has always been of interest to me...”

Much later, while working on her undergraduate degree in Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology and Classical Languages (Greek and Latin), Tabatha was given the opportunity to do some archaeological excavations in Portugal.

“On these excavations, I learnt that there was a lot more to archaeology than just digging. Actually doing the excavation of a site is an

important part of it, but the recording that comes afterwards interested me a lot more - be this recording and illustrating the site, artefact recording, or conservation work. I decided to pursue conservation as a master’s degree because it seemed like the postarchaeological excavation activity which was best suited to my natural skill set.”

Tabatha's undergraduate degree was from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, USA, and she followed that with a master’s degree in Conservation of Archaeology and Museum Objects from Durham University.

“The course included a year's placement at a museum, and most of my conservation experience came from working with Louise Mumford at the National Museum of Wales. She definitely taught me everything I know. I hope that soon I will be able to go and do a PhD too.”

What does the role of an archaeological curator and collections conservator involve?

“It is like being a detective of the past,” she explained, “As a curate, I look after all of the archaeology that comes to the Milton Keynes Museum. I make sure it is safe and won’t degrade, but I also get to do research on the objects and find out their purpose and uses. As a conservator, I get to find out about the process and materials involved in making the objects that we have in our collection. By analysing how something was made, I can better care for it and preserve it for future generations.”

Cataloguing is a large part of her role: “When we receive new archaeology, an oxymoron, I know, my first job is to go through all the boxes and catalogue them. I add every object in the boxes as an entry in our database, so we know what we have and where it all is!

14 September 2023 | MK Pulse Magazine | 32,000 Copies delivered every month door to door across Milton Keynes LOCAL HISTORY
Archaeological curator and collections conservator at MK Museum, Tabatha Barton Bancroft Villa mosaic

“Preventative conservation is so important too - if you have ever visited the museum and noticed a weird yellow box flashing in one of the rooms, it’s not for security - it's one of our humidity and temperature monitoring systems. Every six months I retrieve these data loggers, download the information on them onto the computer, and put them back out. This information lets me see if our rooms are a good humidity and temperature for the objects in them.”

And what do you do when you receive something that is out of the ordinary – something that isn't instantly recognisable?

“That does happen,” she admits, “Sometimes we have no idea what they are. I don’t like to label things as unknown objects - so this is when the research part of the job kicks in! I will use online databases like the portable antiquities scheme, online archaeology journals, and monographs about excavations from Milton Keynes. Normally, I’m able to work out what the object was used for.

Visitors to the museum won't be aware that the history hub is the custodian of 1000s of coins: “We have a large numismatics collection in the archaeology department. There are more than 4000 coins and the majority of those are Roman. Not all of them have been identified, so a large part of working with the collection involves identifying the ruler, the mint,

and the date of the coin. I am also working on repackaging all our coins into special coin boxes.”

Ask Tabatha to wax lyrical about the part of her job that she loves and she'll tell you it's the research that holds her attention: “There is something really satisfying about finding something out about an object which no one has noticed until you pointed it out! It is a nice sense of achievement. Also, I love writing papers and since I am not in school anymore, when I find something out it becomes an excuse to write about it. The best part is that both conservation and curator require research!”

But what about the mundane? Tabatha loves her work so much that nothing feels like a chore. Imagine being that happy every Monday to Friday!

“The cool thing about archaeology is that every site is different, every object is different. Conservation is the same, no two objects can be conserved with the exact same process.”

Press her for an answer though, and she digs deep to find something: “It is probably pest management,” she realises, “Every few months I have to check the pest traps that I set out in the museum and make sure we have no infestations - I am not the biggest fan of bugs!”

Let's talk about career highlights – what is your biggest achievement to date?

“The conservation of the Bancroft Villa mosaic that I undertook in 2019,” she answers with no hesitation, “I had a wonderful team of volunteers to help me with this project,

but it certainly was a large undertaking. It also involved a lot of work outside the actual conservation - including applying for and receiving grants, writing up and publishing the work, and of course the logistics of building a mosaic in the museum!”

Her efforts were recognised when Tabatha became the joint winner of the Joan Elding Prize in 2022 from the Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society for her work on the project.

That conservation has set off a spark, and Tabatha hopes to engage with similar opportunities in the future.

“I really want to do more big conservation projects. I really enjoyed conserving the mosaic - the process, the research, and the result were all really satisfying! I have a few other largescale conservation plans in the works, which hopefully can be started soon, but I am hoping someone finds something really cool in Milton Keynes one day so I can conserve it!”

It's nor all ancient history that gets Tabatha excited though – she can 'do' modern too.

The museum is 50 years young in 2023 - what do you think it will look like in 50 years’ time?

“I hope in the next 50 years we will finally get one of the cute delivery robots in our collection! We keep asking the company that owns them but we keep being ignored. Since they were trialled here it makes sense for us to have one,” she smiles.

“Joking aside, I hope the museum continues to grow and represents everything MK.”

And what about your own personal legacy –what do you hope to leave behind?

“One of the fun things about working here is that I got to set up the entire database/ catalogue for the archaeology collection.

“Milton Keynes Museum has artefacts and objects from the Pleistocene all the way through to the modern day. The richness and diversity of the collection is so special,” she says. “It is a living and growing museum that inspires an interest in many periods of history as well as addressing modern issues.

“I hope that whoever has my job after me keeps the system I have set up and continues to add to it. I hope what I have done is good enough to hold up to the test of time!”

Milton Keynes Museum is one of the best interactive museums, a perfect outing for all ages, staffed by friendly volunteers, and highly recommended by visitors on TripAdvisor. Northlight Dental Raising smiles for over a decade

When Dr Sunil Passan established Northlight Dental in 2010, he did so with a clear vision in mind. To provide a unique combination of patient-centric values, top-tier expertise, and innovative technology to those seeking high quality dental treatment. Sunil explains the practice's guiding principles and what he feels makes it special.

A bespoke and patient-centric approach

At the heart of the practice's ethos is its unwavering commitment to its patients. Dental anxiety is real, and many steer clear of necessary treatments out of fear or previous traumatic experiences. Northlight Dental is acutely aware of this. Every element, from the clinic’s calming decor to the compassionate staff, is designed to put patients at ease. The practice humanises the often clinical nature of dentistry, fostering an environment of trust. Here, patients aren’t just names in an appointment book, but individuals with unique needs and concerns. The practice also stays well clear of ‘dental fads’, or only focussing on treatments that are currently in vogue. As a good example, Composite Bonding has gained huge popularity in recent years, and although it can be very successful, as with any treatments, there are some downsides. Northlight’s approach is always to provide its patients with a full range of options, with a clear explanation of the positives and negatives of each alternative, so an informed decision can be made.

Cutting-edge technology

Dental science, much like every other field of medicine, is ever evolving. Northlight Dental stays not only abreast of these changes, but often ahead of the curve. By integrating the

latest in dental technology, from the use of intra-oral scanners that avoid the use of traditional dental impressions, to an in-house CT scanner, the planning of all cases, even the more complex, is always performed accurately and efficiently.

A comprehensive range of services

Northlight Dental’s strength lies in both the quality and breadth of its services. Whether in need of general dentistry, cosmetic enhancements, orthodontics, or more complex procedures like dental implants, the practice offers it all under one roof, with no need for external referral. This holistic approach saves patients’ time, but also ensures consistent quality and a continuity of care.

An emphasis on patient education

The practice believes in empowering its patients. More than just treating issues, the clinic dedicates a robust emphasis on preventive care. Patients are made partners in their journey towards optimal oral health through the exhaustive education about the importance of oral hygiene, as well as maintenance of dental health.

Accessibility and affordability

In an era where quality healthcare is often equated with hefty bills, patients turn to dental tourism and are left with no continuity of care and a subsequent high risk of post-treatment complications. Northlight Dental takes a unique approach towards the accessibility to top-tier treatments. Their pricing is competitive, transparent, and devoid of hidden costs. Furthermore, by offering financial plans for more substantial procedures, they ensure that high quality dental care is within reach for all.

The practice has also recently extended its opening hours to provide early morning, late evening, and weekend appointments to those with even the busiest of schedules.

In a nutshell, Northlight Dental blends a caring and holistic approach with professional competence and state of the art technology to provide an exceptional patient experience.

Heritage Open Days Free fun for everyone

This September, Milton Keynes will once again mark Heritage Open Days with dozens of events taking place over 10 activity packed days. 2023 is the 17th annual HoD being held here, and it has grown considerably since making its debut in 2006 – back then we had just 15 events to choose from!

Heritage Open Days is an opportunity to engage with a wealth of activities for children and families, spanning exhibitions and workshops, walks and tours, open days and craft events and performances.

And at a time when the purse strings are being tightened more than ever before, it’s a delight to be able to say that every event can be enjoyed for free!

The full programme can be found at heritageopendays.org.uk but over the following four pages, Pulse’s Sammy Jones shares some of the enticing events - and there are others listed in our What’s On pages. Dig deep and enjoy.

Friday, September 8

Love Freedom Ukraine is an exhibition being hosted at MK Central Library which will include pieces by refugee artists and children, which asserts Ukraine’s resilience during these terrible times, through its ability to imagine, ponder and create.

Pop in and view during usual library opening times, through to September 16.

Ridgmont Station Heritage Centre will be inviting you to explore inside too – and it’s worth taking a peek at this award-winning Victorian station house and booking office restoration in the Gothic cottage orné style, dating back to 1846. A museum, station master’s parlour, vintage tea room and gift shop also feature.

The centre will also welcome visitors on September 9, 10, 13, 14, 15, 16 & 17, 10am- 4pm.

In Willen Village, picture perfect St Mary Magdalene Church, a Grade 1 Listed building designed by Robert Hooke, will be open. The church has been a place of worship for three

and a half centuries, with the first worshippers welcomed inside way back in 1668. Visitors will be able to learn more about the history of the church, the priory and the hospice.

A plant sale will be held daily from outside the church steps. Visit daily through to September 17, 10am-5pm.

Newport Pagnell Historical Society is opening its museum doors (at Chandos Hall, in Silver Street) with lots of new artefacts and exhibitions to view. They do a fab job of preserving the town’s rich history and you’ll learn plenty!

The museum is also opening on September 9, 10, 16 & 17, between 11am and 4pm.

Woburn Heritage Centre will host an exhibition of paintings by local creatives called Woburn Artists and Artisans. The pieces are by artists who have lived in the village for more than 50 years and show both the familiar and the unfamiliar views of the place they call home.

The C13th chapel will also be open on September 13, 14 & 15 between 2pm and 4.30pm, and on September 9, 10, 16 & 17 between 10am and 5pm.

St Lawrence’s Church in Broughton is described as a time capsule of social, religious and political history, with its beautiful medieval wall paintings and chained books from the Reformation to the stunning Victorian stained glass windows. The 13th century church, now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust, is still consecrated and occasionally used for services.

It will be open between 10am and 1pm on Saturday, and again on Sunday, September 10.

If you want to make the most of the historical side of religion locally, Bow Brickhill Church & Tower, which in the main dates to the 15th century, will be open and it affords outstanding views from the top of the tower, if you have a head for heights. It will be open between 10am and 4pm, and tea and cake will be served.

St Mary’s Church in Bletchley – on the Church Green Road – is even older, dating to the 12th century, and boasts a Norman archway and medieval tomb. Pay a visit to the War Graves or just sit quietly in the restored historic courtyard. St Mary’s will be open between 10am and 4pm, and again on Sunday, September 10, from 1pm to 4pm.

Sunday, September 10

The chances are that you will have enjoyed a seat and a show at The Stables, the venue founded by jazz aces Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth, long before now, but you won’t have enjoyed a tour behind the scenes, courtesy of the original architect. This is your opportunity to put that right.

Milton Keynes Synagogue Open Day is a chance to enjoy tours of the District Reform Synagogue in Great Linford, view the Torah Scrolls and take in a multi-media exhibition.

‘The Jewish community in Milton Keynes is nearly 50 years old and comes from a wide geographic area and from surprisingly varied ethnic origins,’ organisers said, ‘Besides the common factor of being Jewish, we are also European, Middle Eastern, North American and South African in origin, bringing together our different Jewish traditions.’ Pop along and get educated between 10am and 4pm.

Bradwell Abbey is holding a Medieval Family Fun Day with Chapel tours, guided site walks and the promise that a 12th century Grumpy Prior will be in the building! Try have-a-go-archery before pitting your strength against the sword in the stone under the watchful eye of King Arthur! Herbalists will be in the herb garden, and medieval stallholders and re-enactors will add to the authenticity of the event. As will the mead!

Go medieval between 11am and 3pm.

Passenham Church is dedicated to the 8th century Saxon saint Guthlac. It’s one of our most favourite historic churches, and visitors will be able to enjoy unique wall paintings, ornamental carvings, models and carvings from the English Civil War, bell ringing and talks about the historic 1000 year old history. Open between 11am and 4pm (also on Sunday, September 10).

In Hanslope, 12th century church St James the Great will give tours. Here’s one for all your fact finders out there; it also boasts the tallest steeple in Buckinghamshire. Open between 11am and 4pm (and again September 16, with tours at 11.30am, 1pm and 3pm).

MK’s Alina Orchestra will be bringing music to the MKHoD’s with a Band in a Van concert, delivering musical discoveries from the 1920s and the century that followed. The interactive concert at Kingston Library (11am-midday) promises that you’ll be toe tapping, arm waving and singing along. The motor will keep running with another session at MK Library (2-3pm). Time to tune up!

Charcoal artist Beck Gouverneur and Westbury Arts Centre resident artist Robin Souter, whose work is dedicated to

atmospheric oil painting, present Charcoal Meets Oils at the venues’ Barn Gallery. The weekend event – also happening on September 10 – is open between 11am and 4pm.

Living Archive presents The Point – Down Memory Lane, a celebration of one of MK’s most distinctive and best-loved buildings, and this display is being hosted inside the iconic former cinema. Pop along, remember, reminisce and enjoy – the event will run between 1pm and 4pm.

Bradwell Windmill is one of the last remaining windmills in Buckinghamshire still producing wholemeal flour, and it will be open for visits today and on Sunday, September 10, 1.30pm to 4.30pm both days. There is no need to prebook, but be prepared to wait if it gets a little bit busy.

North Crawley Historical Society will lead you on a two hour field walk which will be at a gentle pace on grass footpaths in the main –with the odd stile.

Key aspects of the countryside around the village will be explored, and there will be a commentary on the field names and historically important features. Remember to wear proper footwear for this one!

On a (hopefully) sunny Sunday morning, what could be nicer than joining members of the Buckingham Canal Society on a Hedgerow Recipe Walk? The perfect way to learn while you love being outside. It’s also ‘a unique way to showcase the abundance of flora and fauna along the canal’, say organisers. Participants will be taken on a guided walk to learn about the various plants and herbs present in the hedgerows – and you’ll receive recipes for snacks, teas, soups and desserts using those ingredients.

Pre-booking is essential – email volunteer@buckinghamcanal.org.uk putting Registration For Hedgerow Walk in the subject line.

A Parks Trust guide will lead a walk around the ancient woodland of Shenley Wood (11am-12.30pm) and the listed 17th century manor of Westbury. Powers of Attorney - An Introduction

Often overlooked but immensely important is the topic of Powers of Attorney (PoA). Discover how this legal instrument can safeguard your interests, ensuring crucial decisions are made by someone you trust when you’re unable to. From finances to healthcare, learn about the different types of PoA and their advantages.

Whether it is, or dealing with your money, a house sale, a utility provider, your GP or care home, if you are not able, you can choose for an Attorney to be appointed to act on your behalf. The Attorney should be someone you know and trust. A PoA empowers who you have chosen with the legal authority to assist you (the Donor) in making decisions or acting on your behalf if you are no longer able to. Your family, including your spouse or civil partner, will not automatically have this right; therefore, you should grant authority to whoever you want to act for you. There are two main types of PoA:

1. Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA)

EPAs are a form of authority popular in the 1980s and 1990s; they are valid and can last a lifetime, enabling your appointed Attorney(s) to make property and financial decisions on your behalf. If you lose capacity, an EPA cannot be used until registered with the Office of the Public Guardian. Whilst now replaced, they still remain valid for financial matters.

2. Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)

LPAs replaced EPAs in 2007. An LPA continues to have an effect even if you lose capacity, which allows your chosen Attorney to make decisions on your behalf when you are unable. You can choose whether the LPA comes into effect immediately or when you lose capacity, limit what decisions your Attorney can make or express a preference on how decisions are made. There are two types of LPA:

a. Property & Financial – allows for any financial and property decisions

b. Health & Welfare – allows for health and social care decisions

Should I replace my EPA? EPAs are still valid and can be used if you have capacity without being registered. However, they cannot be used for health or welfare decisions and cannot express preferences or wishes like an LPA.

To use an EPA when you lose capacity, it must be registered at the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). This can be a long process as notices must be served upon family members and the Donor in addition to the OPG procedures.

It is good to review any EPA to ensure that it reflects who and how you want to make decisions for you. It may be a good time to change to an LPA if it doesn’t. If you have an EPA you may wish

to in addition complete a Welfare LPA to cover both financial matters under the EPA and Welfare matters under the LPA.

What are the advantages of an LPA?

An LPA once signed does not work and requires registration at the OPG. It can be registered at the time of creation or left signed in abeyance and then registered when needed.

If you don’t have an LPA and you lose capacity, a Court of Protection application will be needed and this can be a lengthy and expensive application.

If you think a car full of kids is taxing, imagine putting this lot in the back of the motor! This family of swans was rescued from the canal in Milton Keynes after an oil leak left them covered in oil. MK Swan Rescue volunteers Bryan Lea, Allie Short and Helen Shield rescued the parents and cygnets, and transferred them into the care of The Waterfowl Sanctuary near Huntingdon. After treatment, they were returned to the water locally.

The 2023 edition of the IF Milton Keynes International Festival delivered 10 days of amazing events across the new city, including appearances from playful street acrobats Be Flat who delivered Follow Me, and the outdoor spectacular, Place des Anges, meaning Place of Angels – in a scoop for the festival, their performances here were their only European dates of the year.

Castle Galleries in Central

Milton Keynes is renowned for working with artists including Bob Dylan, Billy Connolly and Ronnie Wood, and last month it took delivery of Johnny Depp’s most personal art release to date. The original reference for the hand-signed image is a still from a shoot for Dior’s Sauvage fragrance, and the piece proved particularly popular with fans, who had only 13 days to secure a copy. “If the piece resonates with even just one person, this art has purpose,” Johnny said.

Isn’t this simply Shrek-tacular? We would LOVE a trip around town in this amazing road warrior. Some might say it’s ogre the top, but put simply, it’s a giant in its field and we think it’s fit for a Princess! Adrian Pinckard spied it parked up in Stony Stratford High Street and took this great shot.

Four bears have been pictured letting their fur down at Whipsnade Zoo, galloping around their wooded home before cooling off in their pond, after soaking up the sun. Two-year-old Naya, sisters Mana and Minnie and Cinderella all enjoyed splashing around in the water to keep cool, and Zookeeper Sarah McGregor took these lovely images. Sadly, many European brown bears are at risk of extinction in the wild. “Brown bears used to be widespread across Europe, but over the centuries populations across western and central Europe have been driven to extinction due to human-wildlife conflict and loss of habitat,” Sarah said.

Film Reviews

OPPENHEIMER

FILM OF THE MONTH - Star Rating: 4.5/5

Oppenheimer‘s remarkable box office success, despite looking like the exact opposite of summer movie fun, speaks to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s enduring reputation. Yet even by his standard for more serious films with big budgets, Oppenheimer is a risky semi-biopic venture that pays off wonderfully – and disturbingly, it must be said.

The film continually cuts between 1940s and 50s, World War and Cold War, between the objective and subjective perspectives on events, as scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer leads the Manhattan Project to develop a nuclear device before the Axis powers. After the war, he’s questioned for Communist sympathies at the behest of conniving politician Lewis Strauss (Robert Downey Jr., magnetic as a dual, villainous protagonist of sorts).

Oppenheimer, through its introverted, ambitious if rather blinkered protagonist,

MEG 2: THE TRENCH

Star Rating: 3/5

The Meg (short for Megalodon) films, seemingly competing with the Fast and Furious series for aggressive stupidity, don’t really require a plot summary. Suffice to say that in this sequel to the 2018 original, Jason Statham gets to fight multiple giant sharks and gun-wielding mercenaries, often at the same time, all while he treats it as the expensive pantomime it is. There’s some decent one-liners and visual gags, though some of them are pretty bad too. It could definitely be shorter but there’s trashy fun to be had, like Sharknado with a bigger budget. The efforts at story and character are no more than cursory (nor is that a huge problem), so why does it have to be nearly two hours instead of under ninety minutes? ✪

adds considerable tension and even dread to a story where you already know the basic outcome. The project succeeds, Japan gets atomic bombed into surrender and Oppenheimer becomes, per the famous quote, “death, the destroyer of worlds”. But Cillian Murphy’s performance, perhaps the culmination of working with Nolan on multiple films before this, is exceptional in showing the fraught humanity of this withdrawn, increasingly guilty man who realises too late the real outcome of his work, however “necessary” it might have been to end the war.

Although the Trinity nuclear test is spectacular in terms of build-up and payoff, the intrigue and huge cast each delivering something unique (including welcome levity from Matt Damon’s general), make this a frankly kinetic three hours as the intrigue and unreality of dealing with unbelievable destructive powers unfolds, followed by the long fallout (no pun intended). ✪

GRAN TURISMO

BARBIE RENFIELD

Star Rating: 2.5/5

Nicolas Cage playing Dracula, complete with freaky vampire makeup and costume – sounds like a riot, right? Except Renfield’s more about, well, Renfield and other much duller, non-Nic Cage things. Nicholas Hoult plays the put-upon servant who’s trying to move out of his dark master’s shadow in modern day America. He’s an enjoyable foil for Cage’s ham-and-cheese craziness and you’ll pine for more scenes involving them both but the film just doesn’t have enough material for them. Instead, we waste time on scenes with forgettable rom-com energy, including with Awkwafina, admittedly at her least obnoxious in a while (mercifully, she’s not rapping like in the recent Little Mermaid remake). Even the bloody fight sequences can’t make up for the missed opportunity for a memorable horror comedy. ✪

Star Rating: 2/5

The famed driving simulator game series becomes a film, based on Nissan’s GT Academy programme which turned avid gamers into real-life racers. A few snarky lines from David Harbour as the no-nonsense mechanic training the academy finalists are the most human this film gets. Otherwise, it relies on repetitive and predictable sports film beats, including staging a photo finish at least three times. Ironically for a film about graduating from games to real life, the racing scenes themselves often become purely digitally-rendered affairs. Only Orlando Bloom might be more artificial here, stuck with a role veering wildly between blustering naivete and slimy cynicism. Plus, the racing aficionados among you might notice how many tracks they attempt to dress up the Hungaroring (of F1’s Hungarian Grand Prix) as, including Le Mans. ✪

Star Rating: 1.5/5

The other half of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon is undeniably a smash hit. But for this reviewer at least, it came across like The LEGO Movie, only so meta and concerned with identity politics that it neglected to tell a cohesive story. Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken make the trip from Barbieland to the real world, and the film regularly descends into monologues that want to deconstruct Barbie’s societal impact on women but feel painfully obvious and awkward given how exaggerated, even pastiche this film’s “real world” gets. As if the filmmakers haven’t thought this all through, Ken (thank goodness for Ryan Gosling’s over-the-top comedic acting here) is weirdly more sympathetic than Barbie as he discovers masculine agency, having hitherto been blissfully unaware of his Barbieland life of (essentially) servitude. ✪

Easiest Sticky Toffee Pudding

with rum caramel sauce

INGREDIENTS

Makes one cake of 22cm

100g unsalted butter, softened

160g dark soft muscovado sugar

2 large eggs

225g self-raising flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

40g molasses

150ml full-fat milk

Double cream or vanilla ice cream, to serve

For the sauce:

100g unsalted butter

125g dark soft muscovado sugar

1 tbsp molasses

1 tbsp rum or preferred liqueur (optional)

300 ml double cream

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/Gas mark 4. Line a round cake tin with parchment paper. You could also use an oven dish, lightly greased.

2. For the cake, place all ingredients, bar milk, into a mixing bowl. Beat using an electric handheld whisk until combined. Pour in the milk gradually and whisk again until smooth. If the milk is colder than the sugar, the mixture might look like has split, but it’s absolutely fine. When the cake is baking, the butter will melt again.

3. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for about 35 minutes or until the cake is springy.

4. In the meantime prepare your sauce. In a saucepan over a medium heat, place your sugar and the molasses and let this melt into a lovely amber colour. Add your butter a little at a time and whisk gently until all combined. Take the saucepan off the heat and pour the cream and the rum. Bring back on the heat and cook for a further five minutes until it thickens.

5. Serve the pudding with warm sauce and vanilla icecream if preferred.

Back to School Basics

September always brings with it crunchy leaves, crisper air, and a craving to look shiny and new. Those back-to-school feels simply transcend with age, turning from new pencil case/pinafore pandemonium, to quiet hysteria over which Autumn-Winter coats and shoes are really worth the investment.

Right now, and luckily for those who want to reinvent without spending, the trends for this season are all about the basics; the clothes and accessories we probably all have hiding away in our wardrobe.

Think mid-blue denim, classic shirts, oversized hoodies, wide-legged trousers and skirts that meet the shins. Coats right now are coolest in shades of camel or deep black, although any longline trench you can find (a la the models at Gucci, Fendi, Miu Miu) will be your trophy.

Also having a moment: the metallics you typically reserve for your end of year parties. With bronze, silver and gold making an appearance at Paco Rabanne, Ferragamo and Giambattista Valli, you’ll win first place style points for adding any into your outfit now — top of the class even, for molten flats or boots like the models at Dries Van Noten. So no need to spend money or time waiting for an invitation to upgrade your basics - find your shiniest shoes from yesteryear, today and see how they scrub up nicely in your casual ensembles.

DIGGING DEEP

Prepare in autumn for a better spring

Somehow, we’ve arrived in October again – how has that happened?

It feels like we’ve dashed straight from spring to autumn, side-stepping summer altogether, but you won’t be able to sidestep those gardening jobs!

Instead, October is the time of the year when you get to do as a bee; and buzz around the garden in a busy fashion!

This month you’ll wind down the grass mowing, but when you’ve given your lawn its final trim for the year, spend a little time examining the mower before retiring it for the winter - maintenance is key, so check the blades and give it a good clean. Get things straight now, and you’ll have no unpleasant surprises in the spring.

If you have a greenhouse, cleaning its panes will help your plants to find as much of the reducing sunlight that is still straining through, and bubble-wrap is a fine way to increase insulation to combat falling temperatures.

Do check any plants that you bring into the greenhouse for pests though – they might love a cosy greenhouse at this time of year, but you definitely won’t love the results of their stay!

The bare-root planting season is also approaching - and it’s a cost effective way of purchasing fruit trees and shrubs. Simply, bare root means the tree has been dug up from the ground and will be sold with no soil around its roots - meaning it can be easily planted once you take delivery.

How does your garden grow?

September is approaching and school is back! It’s a new start, and the soil is warmer than in April and the days just as long.

We will be sowing lettuce ‘All the Year Round’, a hardy outdoors variety, on the plots but I will have raised some in modules in the greenhouse.

Broad beans and peas will be sown, Aquadulce, Claudia and Meteor are hardy varieties and will be ready for picking in spring. The peas will be covered with cloches to give protection from pigeons and frost.

A couple of rows of garlic and onions will be set.

Pot grown runners will be used to start a new strawberry patch on one of the raised beds. This is a good time to propagate many plants from cuttings, taken whilst tidying up the borders. I will focus on Box, Euonymus, Forsythia, Fuchsia, Hydrangea, Lavender, Salvia and Teucrium which have all grown so well this summer. Taking new growth stems up to 15cm/6”, cutting below a leaf joint, using a 50/50 mix of potting compost and grit or Perlite, pot them up as soon as possible.

After a dry summer and a ‘no-mow May’ the lawn is in a sorry state. A firm raking, levelling and reseeding should improve this important area of the garden scene.

Hoses and drip feed systems have done their job for the year, but if you leave them laying out, they will split in the cold weather and you’ll be paying to replace them, so get tidying and store them away now.

At a time when there is lots of cutting back, weeding and sweeping of leaves to be done, it is still nice to look forward to next year’s first blooms - and spring bedding plants like wallflowers are a great bet to turn drear to cheer. Hardy and pretty, plant them out now and they will smile at you in early spring.

Amaryllis make for a truly striking feature in any house, and if you plant now, you’ll have a fabulous centrepiece in time for Christmas.

The flowers - which have their roots in the subtropical regions of the Americas - will bloom within six to eight weeks after setting, just keep the pot free from draughts and direct sunlight. And it’s worth reminding you that our canines and kitties don’t get on with these dramatic blooms, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and lethargy. Making time to visit and speak to constituents

Parliament’s summer recess is always a busy time for me as it means I can spend much more time back in the constituency so I’ve been out across Milton Keynes speaking to residents and listening to the issues that matter to you. It was absolutely fantastic to be joined on one of those days by Penny Mordaunt MP who was out speaking to people on the doorsteps in Oakridge Park and Pennyland

We also had the excellent news that from 1st August the Government cut taxes for 38,000 pubs and bars across the country by lowering the duty paid on a pint compared to supermarkets. This is so important in making sure that our locals, which are at the heart of so many communities, can continue to do just that.

Social Care Funding Boost For MK

I’m delighted the Government has confirmed a £12.4 million funding boost for social care across Milton Keynes. This also includes £1.3 million to improve recruitment and retention, boost workforce capacity and ensure a sustainable social care workforce fit for the future in MK. A stronger care system will better meet care needs around the country and support the NHS for future winters, preventing admission to hospital and helping people to be discharged from hospital more quickly, cutting waiting times for A&E and ambulances. The multi-million-pound investment will deliver tangible improvements to care and support services, benefitting millions working in or supported by care.

Defibrillator Installed At Every School In The City

The Government has now successfully completed its rollout of defibrillators to every state school in Milton Keynes. Last year, the Government committed to ensuring there is a defibrillator on the school grounds of every school across the country and since January more than 20,000 have been delivered to almost 18,000 schools. I know some schools were well ahead of the game on this and already had one installed but I’m pleased the Government has stepped in to support those who didn’t have one. Having access to defibrillators in schools drastically increases the chance of pupils, teachers and visitors surviving a cardiac arrest and all eligible primary, special and alternative provision schools who did not already have a defibrillator have received one.

Minister Visits Inspirational Homelessness Charity

I was proud to show the Homelessness Minister Felicity Buchan the incredible work local charity The Bus Shelter MK does to support homeless people in Milton Keynes. Recently the Housing Market and Housing Delivery APPG I chair and the Homelessness APPG launched a joint report on the benefits commercial to residential conversions could have. In response the Minister agreed to visit one of the homelessness charities in Milton Keynes and joined Ben at the Bus Shelter’s Stantonbury site to meet some of their guests and discuss the challenges the Government need to overcome to end homelessness. The Minister spoke about the support the Government can offer to local charities to increase their support for homeless people, as well as the joint APPG report, the differentiation in the Local Housing Allowance, the Homes For Ukraine scheme and much more.

Tackling Speeding… An Update!

In my last MK Pulse column I mentioned the fact I co-sponsored a Bill in Parliament calling on the Government to to publish revised guidance on the deployment, visibility and signing of speed and red-light cameras for traffic enforcement. Roads Minister Richard Holden MP has since confirmed that the Department for Transport are planning to update the guidelines in autumn so I’m thrilled we’re seeing some progress on this already.

Also this month…

• I met with Health Minister Lord Markham to continue to push for progress on the brand new Women and Children’s Hospital for Milton Keynes which will be built before 2030

• I’m continuing to focus on tackling knife crime and met with the Safety Centre to hear about the amazing prevention work they’re doing and our local policing team in Wolverton to discuss the issue, plus more including anti-social behaviour and car racing.

MK City Council placing education to the fore

The summer holidays have now drawn to a close. During August, Milton Keynes City Council ran the Summer of Play and provided thousands of holiday activities to children in receipt of benefit-related free school meals. The programme, from cooking classes to cinema trips, was a real success and we hope everybody had a great time attending the sessions. Now that the children have returned to school, I wanted to provide an update on what else the City Council has been working on to support our youngest residents and their families.

MK’s latest primary school welcomes students

The seventh school commissioned by the City Council in the last decade is now complete! Students will now be moving into Watling Primary School, which is located near Calverton Lane. The primary school has capacity for up to 630 pupils and is the third new primary school in the Western Expansion Area of the city, where thousands of new homes are being built. Aside from facilities for pupils, the school also has a community sports facility and nursery provision. And as part of our plans of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, we have made sure that the school has plenty of intelligent and eco-friendly technologies too.

We will continue to provide vital infrastructure for our communities as Milton Keynes expands, and look forward to welcoming the first students this month.

Record number of children receive free early years education

We’ve been working hard to make sure that lower-income families are aware of the support available to them, and we’re pleased that a record number of local people are now accessing funding for free early years education. According to census data, 81% of eligible two-year olds have taken up a place at a pre-approved pre-school,

nursery or childminder, compared to 74% nationwide. The scheme promoted locally by the City Council, known as ‘Time for Twos’, gives parents in receipts of benefits up to 15 hours of free childcare per week, for a maximum of 38 weeks per year. I’d recommend that families in receipt of benefits check whether they can access this support; young children really do benefit from the extra socialisation and education, which helps their development. It also provides financial relief for parents who may otherwise struggle with childcare costs. More information on this scheme can be found at www.timefortwos.com

‘Pupil signs’ will help boost road safety at schools

From September, you may notice that ‘pupil signs’ begin to appear outside schools across the city. The City Council is now offering schools a chance to loan bespoke child-size signs which feature children in different uniforms, holding ‘think before you park’ lollipop signs. Schools can use the signs in areas where parking is not permitted for safety reasons, such as the yellow ‘School Keep Clear’ zig zags where extra visibility is needed. This is all part of a wider campaign and our efforts to combat dangerous parking, ultimately improving road safety outside school gates. Schools can request the signs by emailing road.safety@milton-keynes.gov.uk or visiting the road safety section of our website.

Let’s hear it one more time for UK Subs...

Get those legs turned to ‘skank’ on the dance-o-meter and go have yourselves a ska-mendous night out in the company of Porkpie (Sep 8) who will fill The Craufurd Arms with the sounds of The Specials, Bad Manners, Madness, The Beat and the like.

Go one step beyond when the octet stops by as part of their Skandemic tour.

Ivy Records are hosting a showcase event the same night, with bar-side live music from rock mob Rowsie, Martha Makes Mistakes and Holly Henderson, with special guests

Gaylips and The Barrys

There might well be an influx of punk favourers with grit in their eyes on September 14 when UK Subs come through these parts one last time.

After 45 years spent colouring up venues around the world the band has decided to pull the plug on a life spent in the van. Does this mean that they’ll put on their punk rock slippers and relax with Emmerdale? Not entirely; this music making is a way of life, and the band isn’t quitting altogether, instead they’ll limit live work to occasional festival appearances and infrequent dates. No-one can begrudge ‘em calling time on that relentless live schedule – they’ve worked the scene for longer and harder than most.

Give Charlie and the fellas the reception they deserve – a sold-out night where the air is hot and appreciation loud. There won’t be any surprises with Whole Lotta DC! (Sept 16), but there will be

a whole lotta rock classics; Thunderstruck, Highway to Hell, It’s a Long Way to the Top, Back in Black, Touch Too Much...

Rock anthem after another, and they recreate the sounds of the Aussie aces using the same instruments. This is their first time at The Craufurd, but they’ve played the surrounding areas plenty in the past. Apparently this production will be bigger than ever, and they’ve got some new canons!

While all of that is being tackled in the gig haunt, over in the bar, Von Wildenhaus will perform for you.

Irish post-punk noise oiks Naked Lungs released their debut album, Doomscroll a couple of weeks back, and they are stopping by as part of a pretty thorough tour of the UK. There is a buzz about these boys that is deserved.

The first single lifted from the opus, Pressure, tells you all you need to know. Nice work.

L1nkin P4rk (Sep 24) will roll back the years to the dawn of Nu Metal – it’s 20 years since Linkin Park released Meteora! already.

Naked Lungs Whole Lotta DC! The UK Subs are in town on Sept 14

‘From the very beginning, our mission has been to pay homage to Chester Bennington and promote mental health awareness,’ the band says. And they don’t just talk a good game, they deliver; giving 50% of their merchandise sales to charities in line with their values.

Pasadena duo System Exclusive will come hither with an armful of mini synths and a pocketful of Tarantino-dusted riffs on September 27.

Ari and Matt make heart-throbbing, capital P pop punch with more than a hint of post-punk.

Their debut self-titled elpee has been called ‘a post-apocalyptic, post-punk electro-bop.’

Cheap can still mean quality – tickets are six quid.

Noasis are back for their third Craufurd show of 2023 (Sep 30) which of course will sell-out way in advance.

The band began playing homage to the Gallagher clan back in 2006, but this isn’t another tribute gig, it’s a bit more than that, or as they themselves put it, ‘it’s Oasis from a parallel universe.’

If you snag a ticket you’ll get all the charm and swagger you expect from the band who have turned into the leading doppelgangers

Sleeper sounds for MK11

In Kiln Farm, MK11 has live music from Sleeper (Sept 7), performing as part of The National Lottery initiative United By Music; you buy one ticket and can bring along a pal for free with any Lotto product. While it’s not quite the Sale of the Century (see what we did there?) it is an opportunity for a right cheap night out with Louise and the boys. Also at MK11 this September, tributes aplenty with Wrong Jovi (Sept 2), the unimaginatively titled Nirvana Tribute (Sept 8), Ultimate Stone Roses (Sept 9), The Black Charade (Sept 16), Forever Nu (Sept 22) playing the best of 90s and 00s metal, Faux Fighters (Sept 23), Just Radiohead (Sept 29) and The Killaz UK (Sept 30).

on the scene – remember when they hit the national news after they were snowed in at the highest pub in the UK?

And when they played the Queen Vic for Mick in Eastenders? They sell out wherever they play, with good reason.

There are other venues but when it comes to the sound of Oasis, no one does it better than Noasis at The Craufurd Arms.

Stray return with new music – and it’s About Time!

After years of teasing it, last year Stray frontman Del Bromham delivered his thoroughly engrossing autobiography, Rock and Roll Survivor, which was a blast. The only thing that could enthuse fans just as much would be new music, writes Sammy Jones

And the wait for a new album ends this September, when Stray come back with the studio release, About Time

The 10 track opus is being released through Talking Elephant on CD and download, with a limited edition vinyl set to colour up hardcore record collections too.

“I favour songs with purpose and narrative and have some pretty special strong feelings about social injustice,” Del said, explaining his writing process, “It’s all about messaging entertainment,” he added.

The band took care of recording during the pandemic – difficult times meant for unusual recording processes.

“We had to record the album differently to how we had worked before, in that with social distancing in place there would only be two of us at a time in the studio. One of those was Simon Rinaldo, who engineered and produced it at his studio, and one other, such as me laying down the bare framework of the song, followed by other members augmenting each song as we went along,” Del recalled.

“They were strange times and I think the songs reflect that. However, although it might seem a dark album musically and lyrically in places, I believe the overall feeling is one of living in a time of optimism,” says the always cheery fella.

About Time is being described as brimming with pile drivers, counterpointed by slower numbers and if you love Stray for their psych and prog splatterings, you’ll not feel short changed either.

A strong return to form is on the cards, and soon to be on your stereo – the release date is September 15.

Blood from a stone

The difference between the wealthy and those in poverty. In London for example, there are buildings standing empty owned by rich investors while others are homeless and sleep on the streets.

Shout

It appears that many have lost the art of conversation and the only way they can get their point across is to be aggressive and shout louder than everyone else.

About Time – Track by Track

Frontman Del talks Pulse Music through the new album

I Am

The highs and many lows of a lifetime of a musician. Due to the desire and determination, and despite the obstacles life can throw at you, he has survived and remains strong, like a lion and like a tiger.

Living the dream

People’s perception of the life you live, which is not always the reality.

Black Sun

What would happen to planet Earth if the Sun died?

Better day

Written at the time of the Coronavirus, which had affected everybody’s way of life. However, we had to be optimistic and believe that things would get much better.

Sword of Damocles

Damocles, a friend of King Dionysius of Syracuse, envied the ruler’s great wealth and power. When Damocles told the king how fortunate he was, Dionysius offered to change places for a day.

As Damocles dined at the head of the table, he happened to look up. There above his head, hung a sharp sword held only by a single horse hair thread. Fearing the thread would break, he pointed out the predicament to the King. Dionysius nodded, acknowledging that the sword was a constant factor in his life. A reminder that someone or circumstance might at any time cut the thread. Such risk, the King added, comes as an integral part of power.

Bonus Tracks

That is not enough

For as long as I can remember, there have been charitable organisations raising money for people, more often than not, in third world countries. Asking for donations for supplying food, water and medicines etc. The situation never gets any better. Nothing ever gets resolved and the irony of it all is that most of these nations have immense wealth, but that wealth is never distributed to its population.

It is a well-known fact that criminal elements often intercept supplies before they reach the ones it is destined for. World leaders should get together in an effort to solve these problems, but I fear the leaders are perhaps too scared to get involved in others’ politics. Meanwhile the innocent remain victims, and vast sums of money are being wasted.

Dust in your pocket

Someone who has worked hard all their life and finds at the end of it, they have nothing to show for it!

Raise your hand

Just like in a meeting or a rally when there is a request for support. The singer of the song is asking questions and asks to raise your hand in support to show if you agree with what is being said.

Deathly delivery from HOAC

Milton Keynes’ metal masters Heart of a Coward are back in play with their new album, This Place Only Brings Death, set for release this September.

Fans of the band will be pleased to hear that the quintet has lost none of its potency on this fifth studio album, but this time around they have taken a more accessible turn away from the progressive and instead are drawing heavily from the metalcore.

This Place Only Brings Death ranges from mellifluous, soft tunes to visceral, hard-hitting tracks, each polished with striking details that add layers of depth and complexity, and as the title suggests, it’s not a sunny release when it comes to songwriting, but rather goes on an exploration of the difficulties of life, and the countdown that we all face.

“This unique blend of accessibility and thematic intensity presents a fresh take on the band’s signature style, marking a crucial milestone in their evolving musical journey,” promise those that know HOAC best.

Heart of a Coward – vocalist Kaan, guitarists Dan and Carl, bassist Vishal and drummer Chris - will toast the release by doing what they do best; playing live.

They are set to hit the road for a headline tour of Europe and the UK at the end of September, with support from Ghost Iris (Eu only) and TheCityIsOurs.

While there is no MK show in the diary just now, the band will wrap up their UK stint on October 20 at Camden Underworld. Tickets for all dates are on sale.

> This Place Only Brings Death will be released through Arising Empire on September 22. You can stay up to date with all things HOAC on FB @heartofacowardofficial

In their own words...

This Place Only Brings Death

This opening track paints a stark, depressing picture of the world we currently live in, stuck in a deadly circle of capitalist greed.

Captor

Sometimes we can feel trapped in life, but we’re also reliant on those very things that chain you down to survive.

This track describes that feeling of Stockholm syndrome we all feel from time to time.

Surrender to Failure

Sometimes it feels like all of our efforts are for nothing and no matter how hard we try we always end up back at the start.

Sometimes your mind is your own worst enemy, in a constant state of internal conflict.

Devour Me

This track deals with the difficult, dark places that our mind can take us to, when you’ve reached the peak of physical and mental exhaustion and you can’t see a way out.

Decay

A reminder that life is short and if you sleepwalk through life you may end up regretting your choices. The only certainty in life is that we all die, so make every day count.

Ghost

We all have people in our past that have had a negative impact on us, it can feel like these faces and feelings are haunting us in later life, following us like a shadow.

Hex

This track delves into the realm of fantasy, to Hex someone is to cast a spell on them to bring them bad luck and misfortune. Some days it feels like we’re all facing imminent doom.

Passenger

Society can feel like an army of mindless drones, endlessly consuming whatever they are fed and incapable of independent thought.

Dehumanise

This track is about how leaders treat people they are supposed to protect, like a number. It deals with the injustice that plagues the world and how people are seen as so easily disposable.

All Life is Finite

A tribute and farewell to the people that have been lost along the way, on our own journey through life.

After Rocket Man welcome Puppetman!

Babies, Batman, Bourne and Breeeep! September is going to ‘b’ great in theatre-land. Pulse’s Sammy Jones explains more...

Puppet pal Paul Zerdin will be back on The Stables stage (Sep 3) in the opening week of an extensive new UK tour, when he will be joined by little folks Sam, Albert, Baby, Roger the bodyguard and an urban fox. But that’s not allthe America’s Got Talent winner, and arguably the UK’s No.1 ventriloquist, also has some new surprises for fans.

“I can’t wait to introduce you to my new characters which have really unsettled my existing dysfunctional sponge family,” he said, calling this Puppetman road trip his ‘most personal show yet.’

Over at MK Theatre, the delightful New Adventures bring Matthew Bourne’s brilliance to life with a classic among classics, Romeo and Juliet (Sep 5-9) .

This is the first co-production between New Adventures and Sadlers Wells, two dance powerhouses.

Together they will give the Bard’s timeless story of forbidden love a scintillating injection of raw passion and youthful vitality, as per Bourne’s vision.

The masterful dance re-telling of an ageless tale of teenage discovery and the madness of first love will be a visual feast. Isn’t everything with the Bourne name attached to it?

Urzila Carlson presents her new show, Just No (Sep 6) at The Stables. ‘Urzila has discovered our frustrations are what brings us together – not sport, not love, not peace – but people who do us wrong and get on our tits.’ Tickets were snapped up, but try for returns. Jordan Gray presents Is It A Bird? (Sep 9) to take on babies, boobies, bigots and Batman in the blistering music and comedy show, and there are more funnies from Seann Walsh with Back From The Bed (Sep 13). Seann thought better of keeping the same show name for this trawl: “Sticking with Same Again? felt a bit triggering after the year we’ve had,” he said, explaining the change, “It is now called Back from the Bed. Some of the material will be the same as I had always planned and some of it will be new because it will be difficult to avoid mentioning the last year in which millions of decent people tragically lost their lives to TikTok.” The Third Age Players invite you to join them for a performance of 36 Titty-Ho Lane (Sep 15 – 17). What’s it all about? Here’s your blurb: 36 Titty-Ho Lane is a crowded council house in suburbia, full of mediocrity, burnt dinners and an out-ofcontrol stamp collection. But the Crankshaws’ day is about to be shattered. Bruce and Blanche are not only in that marital state of near tolerance, together with exasperation, but are desperate for

> Get tickets:

their children to leave home and for Bruce’s mother, Nellie, to… erm, you know. The Crows also live in Titty-Ho Lane, at number 39, and are nightmare neighbours - loud, uncouth and chaotic. Petula’s numerous children (all by different husbands) are always in trouble with the law. Fast forward, and the Crankshaw’s circumstances have changed. But what is Nellie up to? Why is Stella Weiztman calling at the house? And who is Mikhail Volkov and what is his connection to the Crankshaws?

There is only one way to find out – go grab a ticket for a Wavendon Community Centre performance by the mature storytellers.

Mark Watson makes his Stables return (Sep 17) too, with the show, Search. He’ll consider the search for meaning that we’re all on, with or without Google. A show that’s different every night.

Life of Pi (Sep 19 – 23) made a massive impact on Broadway and in the West End, and now the ‘theatrical phenomenon’ is set to do big business in the new city, visiting MK Theatre as part of its debut UK tour.

After an epic storm in the Pacific Ocean, Pi is stranded on a lifeboat with four other survivors – a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Royal Bengal tiger. Settle back for this epic journey of endurance and hope.

Still at MK Theatre, Tim Vine presents Breeeep! (Sep 26) with a promise that ‘all tickets are non-repundable.’ One-liners, wobbly props and ridiculous humour is the promise.

Life is exciting! A house move is afoot and careful planning has ensured that much of the packing has been done ahead of the moving date. Come the day when a removals vehicle swallows my life, it will be a case of loading up the furniture and everything else in boxes. Only clean underwear, toiletries, laptop and various chargers will be left over to be carried in the car to the new house. Frankly, I have Impressed myself. In other news, I have a beard. It isn’t one of those all-over-the-face things. No, mine is a goatee, but I have heard it called many other things; some less polite than others. My point is that I need to shave the bits where the goatee isn’t supposed to be growing. In addition, I need to trim the edges and keep the whole thing from becoming too long, lest it appears to my young daughter as something that can be braided.

The box into which the above items have been hidden, has been identified. I will either look like the Wild Man of Borneo or have to relent and open that box.

Back to that carefully planned packing.

I mentioned toiletries. When I think of what it means, I didn’t consider electric beard trimmers. Nor did little scissors come to mind. Nail clippers also seemed to miss the list. Oddly enough, beards and nails continue to grow regardless

of how many boxes of stuff have been packed.

The box into which the above items have been hidden, has been identified. I will either look like the Wild Man of Borneo or have to relent and open that box. The problem is this: if I dig out stuff already packed, then what is to stop me opening a multitude of other boxes to do the same; therefore, why bother having packed anything in the first place?

Here comes another seemingly unrelated tangent. I wanted to pin a small perforated ball to the key in the back door. It keeps the door ajar just enough to allow the dogs to get back in from the garden because they can get their noses into the gap to open the door. A short while back, I would have searched through drawers or hunted in the shed for something to insert into the hole located in the bow so as to make it possible to hold the ball in place.

Bow? Yes, bow. It is the bit you hold when you twist a key in a lock. I didn’t know that until I thought how to describe where the hole was on the key, but I digress…

Unfortunately, the contents of the shed have been packed. The drawer full of unidentified objects have been emptied and packed. Fortunately, we have plenty of sticky tape and, rather unfathomably, matches. Strike some and douse them in water. Then tape three together and insert them through the hole. Job done. However, it would have been far more enjoyable having a good old rummage through drawers and in the shed (I’m a bloke – it’s what we do when there isn’t football on the telly).

The temptation to reopen some boxes is growing…

Your stars

Flavour of the Times - Traditionally Virgo – the maiden with a sheaf of corn – marks the end of the high point of the year when, agriculturally, the corn is in and the job now is to get everything stored away for the lean winter times ahead. In our society it’s more about saying goodbye to the summer holidays as we focus on going back to school, college etc. and making practical preparations for the darker days ahead. I’m already collecting wood for when it’s cold enough to want to fire up the stove! This year it will feel very much as if things are slowing down, falling apart even, and nothing is resolved, particularly as Jupiter joins all the other outer planets in appearing to go backwards in the sky. The only positive in this is that Venus resumes forward motion at the beginning of the month in Leo which will brighten things up a bit. Otherwise the general advice is to hunker down and lower your expectations of what can be achieved. Pushing for significant solutions will be ineffectual this month.

VIRGO

August 24 – September 23

Getting organised is what you do best so just get on with it. It’s best to reduce the number of things you focus on. Find what’s most important and move forward one step at a time. Mercury is also in Virgo now so keep conversations short and to the point and you will probably find some satisfaction in how things go. Your character is probably better suited to these slow energies than most.

LIBRA

September 24 – October 23

Any moves towards more justice and fairness in the world will suit you as Mars enters your sign this month. This will be enhanced when the Sun joins it at the end of the month and there will probably be skirmishes, where abuses of power meet protests against it, at the full moon on 29th. These are the early symptoms of a growing unrest out there that may inspire you to get involved in.

SCORPIO

October 24 – November 22

September doesn’t really have much going for you folk, I’m afraid. Benevolent, expansive Jupiter opposite you in Taurus is going retrograde and it backs away from Uranus although the latter is in a tricky aspect with Venus. Some unusual issues over money or love may surface but it will far from clear what direction they are headed. Not a time to commit, for sure!

SAGITTARIUS

November 23 – December 22

The words often used to describe Sagittarius are usually all about freedom from constraints but actually being truly free is mostly just an illusion. The full moon in Pisces opposite the Virgo sun will be a challenge and the new moon in Virgo will probably make you feel even more tied to routines and jobs that just have to be done. Best to accept that that’s currently the way things are.

CAPRICORN

December 23 – January 20

The earthiness of the Virgo month will suit you and allow things to be tidied up and organised and any Virgos you know will be particularly useful to you at this time of year. It’s all very pragmatic which is not exciting enough for some folk, but you will be generally ok with it. Let things take their course, I would suggest.

AQUARIUS

January 21 – February 19

Virgo gives way to Libra at the end of this month, by which time you will want to say ‘about time too’. The ways of the world will probably appall you all month as everyone is focusing on the minutiae in the world in front of their noses and nobody is looking at the big picture. This will have to change but not yet, I’m afraid.

PISCES

February 20 – March 20

Water and Earth: Pisces and Virgo. It either creates the mud of chaos or the solid banks of the river to give structure to the flow of water. Virgo will try to get you organised mid-month when the moon is new but there is so much dissolving of boundaries going on, you may feel it’s all a bit pointless. Letting go to hang on seems like a contradiction, but maybe it’ll work for you!

ARIES

March 21 – April 20

Decisive actions are not flavour of the month as we head into autumn and this is more true this year than it is usually. There are very few planets out to feed your fire and you may feel a bit helpless to act in the face of events happening around you. Your tendency to act first and think afterwards will get your precisely nowhere at the moment.

You are bound to be affected personally by some if not all of the massive changes that are taking place this year. An astrological reading of your chart can forewarn you about how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you on a personal level during 2023, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. This is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year.

TAURUS

April 21 – May 21

Jupiter will have been giving you a boost since the beginning of the summer but now it goes retrograde and recent gains need to be consolidated before you can move on. The Virgo flavour of the month will be helpful so long as you don’t expect to go much further forward for the moment. Things you hold dear should be revisited as the month ends.

GEMINI

May 22 – June 21

There is precious little support for Geminis this month. The sooner you get used to the idea that the summer is over and that things need organising for the winter months, the better things will feel. How about tidying up your files and contacts on your phone? That has probably needed doing for a long while and now is the moment to do it!

CANCER

June 22 – July 23

Clear the decks! Get rid of stuff! Reorganise your life! Go to the tip! That’s what it’s all about this month as the sign of organisation and order, Virgo, comes into the limelight. You cannot bring new things into your life until you get rid of what is no longer useful to make way for it. And there is satisfaction in simplifying your life.

LEO

July 24 – August 23

The only good news as we go into autumn is that Venus has turned and is now going forwards again, giving some impetus for some creative ideas and perhaps buying some beautiful things that you will love. Perhaps a bit more money coming your way through your creative efforts might also provide a boost in a rather dour month when there is not a lot else to inspire us.

Chart readings with me start at £67 and last for an hour on Zoom or Skype. Please go to www.astroguidance.co.uk for more details and to book a session.
