t’s time for the nostalgia of a bigger and better Victorian Christmas at Milton Keynes Museum. Come along on Fridays to Sundays before Christmas for beverages of all sorts, plenty of food and Carols in the Parlour. What could be better?

Willen Hospice needs over £16,000 a day to provide all it’s important services. Can your help raise funds by volunteering in one of their shops? The new Hospice Select shop is opening soon offering designer clothes, collectibles and antiques. Pop in for a preChristmas treat. Or you could stand in for Santa on school visits or be a helpful elf in the Grotto. Most of us probably haven’t put up our decorations yet, so it seems a shame to think about taking them down after Christmas. However, you can have your tree recycled and also help Willen Hospice raise funds to carry on their amazing work. They’ll be collecting from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th January. Just go to their website for details or scan the QR code inside.

And of course, pantomime season is well underway – oh yes it is! Check our ultimate guide to your local pantos. Billy Conley and his daughter Lucy are spreading the Cinderella magic at Milton Keynes Theatre. There are alternative versions to see too at the Old Savoy in Northampton and The Cube in Corby. Snow White at the Royal & Derngate will be strictly fabulous with Ore Oduba or there’s a different production at Stantonbury Theatre. You can choose other favourites like Jack and the Beanstalk and Sleeping Beauty or something different like Hansel and Gretel or the Stick Man. Why not go to them all? Finally, a big shout out for Oakgrove School, the UK’s second Beacon School recognised by the British Beekeepers Association. It will soon be summer and time for the bees to be busy again.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas.

he countdown to Christmas is on, and Milton Keynes Museum will be turning back the clock and celebrating Yuletide with the return of its popular A Victorian Christmas – which is set to be bigger and better than ever! Visitors can eat, drink and be merry with freshly roasted chestnuts to nibble on, and mulled wine, or a non-alcoholic alternative, served for just 20 shillings a glass, and you’ll want to be in tune if you fancy joining in with the Carols in the Parlour. As you move around the Museum at leisure you’ll see all of the usual attractions which will have been dressed for the festivities, and the volunteers will be suitably attired too. Children will experience real magic – come rain or shine there will definitely be snow in the Street of Shops, and some special Christmas crafts to keep them entertained. If you want to make things even more special for the youngsters, book them in for a meeting with the man in red – Santa Claus is leaving home early this year and setting up his grotto at the Museum where he will be greeting and giving gifts to those boys and girls who have been good all year through. Is a Kitchen re-spray the new way to update and save?

M

any of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially since we have had more time at home. But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.

“Can any kind of kitchen can be refinished or is respraying just for solid wood?” As long as your kitchen is in reasonable condition, FX-SPRAY MK can refinish it., even carrying out minor repairs and changing handles as part of the process.

FX-SPRAY MK also treats doors, windows and furniture. For more information or a free quote, email jason@fxfinishing.co.uk or visit www.fxfinishing.co.uk Jason Thompson, FX-SPRAY MK

Why replace when you can refinish?

Now local company FX-SPRAY MK is offering a complete professional paint spray service for kitchens. It is a quick and simple process that leaves your kitchen looking brand new, says FX-SPRAY MK. The company removes and sprays 90 per cent of the kitchen off site, which means that very little work has to be done in your home, in turn meaning minimal disruption. An average kitchen can be completed within a week and home owners continue to use it during the process.

WILLEN HOSPICE

Give the gift of time this Christmas Every year Willen Hospice cares for thousands of local families whose lives have been turned upside down following a devastating diagnosis of incurable illness. As well as supporting patients by addressing their physical symptoms, the Hospice’s expert staff meet patients’ emotional, psychological, social and spiritual needs through activities such as counselling and art therapy.

he Hospice’s care is free of charge but it costs more than £16,000 a day to run their specialist services. With only 15% of running costs met by ongoing NHS funding, the charity has to raise millions of pounds each year through fundraising and relies heavily on volunteers to help keep costs down and ensure continuity of services. “We simply couldn’t function without our team of passionate, dedicated volunteers. Whether they’re helping us in our shops, keeping the gardens neat or supporting our clinical teams, they are an important part of our Willen family,” said Lisetta Carpenter, voluntary services administrator at the Hospice. any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems. When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window

once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust! These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords

are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been

referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

PANTOS

You shall go to the ball!

It’s the most magical time of the year, and pantomime is a huge part of that family entertainment, with lost slippers, ‘wooden actors’ (read the feature!), talking mirrors, lost children and all sorts of bonkers stories waiting to be told. Sammy Jones once again picked up the magical wand and sprinkled some fairy dust to bring you the ultimate guide to pantos in the area. Oh, yes she did! Panto: Cinderella Starring: Brian Conley is swapping Albert Square for the new city – and his daughter Lucy will join the cast this time Where: Milton Keynes Theatre When: Saturday, December 9 2023 – Sunday, January 14 2024 What to expect: Another top class production from the team behind Crossroads. They say: “This Cinderella is a bit different, so I think you are going to want to see it. Even though you might have seen Cinderella before, this is a nice, different story,” promises Lucy. Who’s it for? Absolutely everyone, without exception. And another thing: Ben Stock and Neal Wright return to star as Tess and Claudia, and they are the best Ugly Sisters – they’ve got a gong from The Pantomime Awards to prove it! Book: atgtickets.com/miltonkeynes

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Derngate

Panto: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Starring: Strictly winner Ore Oduba and Corrie’s Wendi Peters head the cast Where: Northampton Derngate When: Friday, December 8 – Sunday, December 31, 2023 What to expect: With lavish sets, hilarious jokes and fun for all the family… Hi-ho, Hi-ho it’s off to panto you go! They say: My favourite thing about doing panto is being able to get dressed up, be a bit silly and have a lot of fun!” says Ore. Wendi Peters – playing the Wicked Queen – added: “If I haven’t made somebody cry, I’m not doing my job properly” Who’s it for: It’s perfect fun for all the family, of course. And another thing: This is the third year that top dame Bob Golding will be bringing his panto magic to Northampton. Book: royalandderngate.co.uk

Retain key staff whilst saving tax!

T

here are lots of great ways you can motivate your staff as well as retain key members of your workforce and attract new talent to help your business grow. Some of these methods also provide tax savings for either the employee or the business owner too! Employee ownership is one of the great ways you can retain and attract staff, and this can be achieved in a number of ways.

ENTERPRISE MANAGEMENT INCENTIVES (EMIS) AND OTHER SHARE SCHEMES There are a number of different HMRC-approved share schemes. Each of these share schemes come with their own tax benefits and conditions, but can also provide a brilliant way to incentivise your staff and keep them motivated to help the company grow. The most common schemes amongst SME’s are EMI share schemes and nontax advantaged share schemes.

For example, there are many different types of employee share schemes available such as Enterprise Management Incentives (EMI). You can also offer key staff members Growth Shares to encourage the team to work towards long term company growth. If you are looking to exit or partly exit your business, you can also set up an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT).

For EMI schemes, in a nutshell, employees are awarded options to purchase shares in the future (say 3 years’ time) in their employer’s company, usually at the market value of the shares today. The employee therefore receives a discount on the share price, but do not pay tax on the difference if the shares have grown in value by the time they are purchased.

In this article, we provide an overview of these three options.

Some share schemes can be targeted towards retaining and incentivising specific key employees.

It is also possible to run an unapproved share scheme. While these schemes do not receive the same tax benefits as a HMRC-approved scheme, they can offer a greater ability to tailor the share scheme to create a bespoke arrangement to fit the business and business owner’s requirements. These share schemes can be great for any business, regardless of its size or future plans.

GROWTH SHARES Growth shares are a class of shares awarded to employees, which typically give them capital rights above a set target value of the company. For example, if a company is currently worth £1million, a growth share awarded to an employee may entitle them to 5% of any value achieved above £2million, on eventual sale of the company. This allows the business owner to retain full control of the company

and rights to annual dividends, and ring fences any value built to date, but encourages employees to push to grow the capital value of the company. Employees pay no income tax on the acquisition of the shares provided if they pay full market value of the growth share. Depending on the conditions set on the shares, they are typically valued at a much lower price than ordinary shares. Provided the employee paid full market value for the shares, the only tax charge they will incur will be when they sell the shares. This is becoming a very popular method of incentivising key staff members in SME companies, where the owners do not want to forfeit dayto-day control.

EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP TRUSTS (EOTS) EOTs are becoming an increasingly popular way to pass ownership (or part-ownership) of a company over to the employees, whilst providing very generous tax breaks to the exiting business owner. If the specific conditions are met, the sale of the business to an EOT can be completely free of Capital Gains Tax! The EOT ownership model has been likened to the John Lewis model. Essentially, the owners of the business sell their share (or some of their shares) to a trust which holds the shares in the business on behalf of the employees of the business. As well as providing the business owner with a way to exit the business without paying any Capital Gains Tax,

enquiries@advaloremgroup.uk 01908 219100

an EOT owned-company can also pay annual bonuses of up to £3,600 to employees free from Income Tax. At a high level, many companies are eligible to set-up an EOT structure, provided that they are a trading company , all eligible employees participate on an equal basis (some consideration can be made for differences in seniority, length of service or remuneration) and a few other conditions are met. The sellers must also sell at least 51% of their shareholding to the EOT. EOTs are quickly growing in popularity amongst SMEs and provide a really effective exit strategy for business owners. SUMMARY These are just a selection of the ways you can incentivise your staff, retain key employees and attract new talent. Should any of the options for employee incentivisation be of interest to you, or should you wish to discuss further ways in which you can incentivise your staff or retain key talent, please do not hesitate to contact us.

LEGAL

What to do when someone dies:

Information for Executors and Administrators

Sara Taylor and the Wills, Trusts and Probate Team provide effective and proactive guidance when dealing with estates and estate planning.

Artemis House, 4 Bramley Road Milton Keynes MK1 1PT

Where to start Before you start to deal with a deceased person’s property it is important to find out whether or not they left a valid Will. A Will may be held by a bank or a solicitor or with the deceased’s personal possessions. A Will sets out how an estate is to be distributed following death. Where a person dies with a valid Will it is described as a “Testate Estate”. The Estate will be then distributed in accordance with the terms of the Will. Where a person dies without a valid Will it is described as an “Intestate Estate”. The Estate will be then distributed in accordance with the set Rules of Intestacy. Entitlement If there is a valid Will appointing an Executor(s), they are responsible for dealing with the Estate administration. The Executor’s authority to act starts at death. If there is no Executor appointed or an Executor declines to act (due to illness, death or unwillingness), a Will remains valid and the responsibility of dealing with the Estate will be that of a residuary beneficiary under the terms of the Will. Such residuary beneficiary would be termed as an Administrator. If a person dies without a Will (Intestate) the Rules of Intestacy determines and identifies who has the legal responsibility and beneficiary entitlement under such Rules. Grants of Probate and Grants of Letters of Administration Where there is a valid Will and probate is required, a Grant of Probate application is submitted by the Executors to the Court and a Grant of Probate is issued to enable the Executors to administer the Estate. Where there is no Will, a Grant of Letters of Administration is applied for as above by the identified Administrators. Where there is a Will but no able or willing Executor, a Grant of Letters of Administration (with Will) is applied for as above by an identified residuary beneficiary. The term “Personal Representative” is often used as a broad term to cover both Executor or Administrator, similarly a “Grant of Representation” is also used to describe either or any forms of Grant. The administration of an Estate of a deceased must be administered in accordance with the Law . This involves gathering in of assets, settlement of all liabilities, funeral costs and taxes (including Inheritance Tax, Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax all of any of which may be applicable in an Estate) and distribution of estate funds.

The above information is for general guidance only and does not constitute legal advice. Heald Solicitors disclaims and excludes any liability in respect of the contents of this article or for action taken based on this information. If you need legal advice, please contact a solicitor.

20

Rules of Intestacy Whilst joint assets pass to the survivor of such asset on death, it is not correct to always assume that a spouse benefits from all of the assets in the sole name of a deceased. Where there are children of a deceased, the surviving spouse benefits from the personal effects and a

statutory legacy of £322,000.00 (for deaths from 26th July 2023 (increased previously from £270,000.00) and the rest of the estate is divided as to half to the children of the deceased and half to the spouse. If there are no children of a deceased, the surviving spouse does benefit from the whole estate. If there is no spouse and no children of a deceased, the Rules of Intestacy and entitlement is determined as to the blood line descendants of the deceased. Inheritance Tax Inheritance Tax is considered on Estates which exceed £325,000.00 (net). However, assets passing between spouses are free of Inheritance Tax. Other exemptions are available in certain circumstances, (for example transfer of a late spouse nil rate band and residence allowances). Inheritance Tax is charged at a rate of 40%. If a minimum of 10% of an estate is passed to charities – if the estate remains taxable, a reduced rate of 36% will apply. Insolvent Estates An Estate is insolvent if there are insufficient assets to settle the estate liabilities. Great care and reliable advice should be immediately sought in such matters. Business Interests Personal representatives may need to deal with business interests held by a deceased which may include daily management until it can be realised. Administrators may have limited powers that Executors and advice should be sought (Accountant/legal). Deeds of Variation Wills can be altered after death provided those affected beneficiaries are in agreement and are over 18 years of age. This can also apply to Intestate Estates to alter a distribution post death to redistribute assets or include other beneficiaries. Advice and Information – Where can I obtain further help? At Heald we can assist with all aspects of Grant applications and if required to also include estate administration from verifying assets, grant applications, gathering in assets, settlement of liabilities and distribution of Estates. Heald’s conveyancing department are also here to assist with any deceased’s property sale and work closely with the Probate (private client) department in dealing with probate property sales or transfer of property to beneficiaries. If our Probate Department can offer any help to you, either on a fixed fee information basis or a full instruction, please do not hesitate to contact Sara Taylor or any of her experienced team members, Tracy Bates or Mia Graham who will be pleased to help you.

Come rain, shine or 3ft of snow, every December 25 morn since 1901, Bradwell Silver Band have taken to the streets of New Bradwell bringing musicality to Christmas morning. Starting with Byrom’s Christians Awake Salute The Happy Morn, the music certainly shakes people from their slumber, as one resident recalled: “The time-honoured custom began with the first blow at the corner of Bridge Street and Church Street...the first time I heard it, I nearly shot out of bed wondering what the hell had happened. But the tradition is loved by all Bradwellians, young and old.” Residents reward the music-makers with drinks and snacks to keep the cold chills at bay, and tradition says that no child should open their Christmas presents before they have heard the band.

LOCAL HISTORY

The bright lights

A poignant note

Newport Pagnell’s illuminating Christmas display has been an annual event since 1960; on Friday, December 2 Earl Beatty of Chicheley gave the command for the very first switch-on. Santa Claus has been charged with switching on the lights from time to time, but he’s not the only one; Jazz ace John Dankworth took on the task in 1977, with friends on Newport Pagnell High Street ‘lining the curbs with two-penny pieces collected from shoppers to help pay for the town’s amenities,’ and Anglia television announcer Michael Speake had to battle floods to switch on the 25th annual celebrations! In 2022, organisers scored a goal of their own – by tempting lioness and local girl Leah Williamson to do the honours.

Albert French was born in June 1899 in New Bradwell, later moving to Wolverton with his family. In 1915, Albert left his employment at the Railway Works, 'without notice' on October 16 and joined up to fight in the Great War. Albert documented his time in training and in action, regularly writing home to his sister, May. Tragically, Albert was killed in action six months after this letter. On June 15, 1916, he died while ‘doing his duty nobly for King and Country.’ He lost his life a week before his 17th birthday. Arthur was one of the 906,000 British young men to lose their lives in the 1914-1918 war.

Newport Pagnell’s Taylor family, responsible for the famous mustard which found royal favour with King William IV, were hugely successful and did much for their local community. Frederick James Taylor firmly believed in giving back; among his many acts of kindness, every pupil at Cedars School was given an orange before they broke for the Christmas holidays. And during the food shortages of World War One, an orange would have been highly prized indeed!

I hope you will not mi nd me not writing bef ore I have been so busy in the trenches, that we hardly knew what da y it was. So I know you will excuse me. I exp ect you were all anxio us, and wondering why you did not have a Christm as letter. I did send a let ter on Christmas Eve, but it was not a proper Ch ristmas letter. I scribb led it off in my spare tim e. I just managed to finish it. I have not had a Ch ristmas letter yet, and it is 9.30 p.m. Christmas Sunday night now. I am expecting one any tim e from you now though .I know why I’ve not had a letter. I know you wi ll all be very busy, the sam e as I was. I hope you had as happy a Chris tmas as possible, und er the circumstances. I had a decent Christmas, but it was nothing like being at home. Still, I made a decent job of it.

If you do not receive a letter any time for a good while, you must not be anxious, you mu st put it down to trench diggin g, or night marches, or something of the sort. So you will know nex t time if you are a long while receiving a letter. You can expect me home within a fortnight. We are hav ing 7 days leave. It will be a decent leave, wo n’t it? I shall have time to have a good look rou nd Wolverton, and have a jolly good talk. I thi nk I shall be able to tell you as much about soldierin g as most of them. I’ve had two parcels, one from inhabitants of Wolverto n, the other from a cha p’s uncle. This chap, who sleeps near me, likes me , and got his uncle, who lives at Brighton, to send me a Christmas parcel, as a kind of surprise packe tI used to be unlucky at one time, but I seem to be quite lucky since I joi ned the army.

With fondest loveliest

love from Albert

Buzzing with success: Oakgrove is awarded for beekeeping brilliance Oakgrove School becomes the second in the UK to receive Beacon School status from British Beekeepers Association.

O

nly the second school in the country to be presented with Beacon School status by the British Beekeepers Association, Oakgrove School is “delighted” that educating its pupils on the enjoyment and importance of bees in the environment has been recognised. President of the British Beekeepers Association, Anne Rowberry, visited Oakgrove for a student-led tour of its apiary and to present the school with its Beacon School certificate. Headteacher Ian Tett said: “It was a privilege to welcome Anne to Oakgrove School and to be officially acknowledged as a centre of excellence by the National Beekeeping Association.” During her visit, Anne met staff and the students who attend the school’s twice weekly Bee Club. The students explained how they benefit from the wide-range of activities that the school’s on-site apiary provides.

“Oakgrove, which has 22 hives, shares its knowledge and best practice with other schools and the local community,” said Ian. “We have installed two hives at St Paul’s School and will soon be setting up hives at Kents Hill Park School. We also recently held an open day to demonstrate to the local community the value of beekeeping,” Each of the hives produces 50 to 80 jars of honey per year, with some jars sold to help fund equipment for the Bee Club. INTERVIEW

Like father, like daughter for Brian and Lucy Brian Conley will be donning his familiar Buttons costume and spending Christmas at Milton Keynes Theatre in this year’s pantomime, Cinderella, and he’ll be joined by a very familiar face this time - his daughter Lucy will be making wishes come true in the production. They sat down with Pulse’s Sammy Jones for a chat at Chicheley Hall.

B

rian is the king of British Pantomime in our opinion, and we’ve seen enough of them to know. Mind you, he’s had plenty of practice when it comes to honing his craft in the seasonal spectaculars – he’s added the giggles and sparkle to more than 35 of them. Nothing gets in the way of Brian and panto. Not even the birth of his daughter. “I was induced two days early so he didn’t miss a performance, which my mum agreed to,” giggles Lucy, “I am fully a panto baby!” The two clearly share a passion for entertaining, and they have a wonderful father-daughter relationship too. He is most definitely the proud father: “He’s my biggest cheerleader,” Lucy grins, “It’s very sweet.” Having been a familiar sight in the wings watching her dad play in numerous productions, this Christmas she will earn her wings – as a fairy in training on the stage. “I’ve got to give Cinderella a happy ever after and then I’ll get my wings!” she explains. “I’m excited to change the show up a bit; me, dad and our director Kathryn came up with this little storyline. Kathryn is amazing, she came over, we sat in the kitchen and kept thinking of different ideas and then we had this learner 28

Cinderella - it’s a family affair

fairy thought. It just works well with the show and is quite different...” Forget any ideas you might have about nepotism being behind Lucy’s upcoming stage engagement as Fairy 312. She has worked hard for her spot in the cast list; Lucy trained at the Oxford School of Drama and now goes out doing stand-up and improvisation. This might be her first year in panto with her dad, but last Christmas she starred in Goldilocks & the Three Bears in Richmond.

“I really wanted to feel like I had earned it and I don’t want to be in a position where I am going to let people down,” she told me, “You want to know that you are capable of taking on something like this, so I’ve been training really hard...” Perhaps, given her dad’s super successful career, it was inevitable that she would want to follow him into that spotlight. She showed signs very early on: “When Lucy was two, we were in the lounge and I got a microphone and started

Slipper wars! The cast of Cinderella do battle at the launch

singing ‘Somewhere beneath the sea...’ she didn’t know the words, but she started making noises,” he recalls of the old family video which now features in the one-man show Brian has been touring in 2023. That’s a one-man show with a little help from Lucy... “I show it to the audience, and then I come on singing it, but the audience don’t know that Lucy is also a part of the show - then she walks out as this 21 year old woman... it sends shivers through me,” he admits. Brian has appeared in award-winning West End musicals and television sitcoms, presented his own chat show, recorded five albums and completed numerous sell out tours of the UK, as well as appearing a record eight times on The Royal Variety Performance billing. He’s been there, done that and not only got the t-shirt, but also gained a wonderful reputation as one of our very best entertainers in the process. Lucy’s burgeoning star is a chance for him to relive some of the early year magic once more. “It’s a bit like as a parent when you’ve got your little kids and you see Christmas through their eyes – seeing it through her I am aware of how much I take for granted,” he admits. And what is Lucy learning from dad? “How he handles situations,” she answers with no hesitation, “He is just so professional about everything - there have been times where he has messed up very well known

songs and I firmly believe the audience thought they got it wrong... he is just such a pro. “On stage he obviously plays this very silly character, but he is the smartest person I know. He is so intelligent and has really honed his craft.” It might come as some surprise that the man who raises the smiles on the stage is every bit as funny at home.

I was induced two days early so he didn’t miss a performance. I am fully a panto baby!” “I don’t know when he turns off. He just doesn’t change,” Lucy smiles. “It is very much his character, but all his family are like that; my uncle Alan, my auntie Lil ...all of dad’s side of the family are in this sort of industry. My grandad used to rig cameras for the BBC, and my nan is the funniest person in our house - that’s where he gets it from!” Was there any anxiety about Lucy entering the perilous world of show business? “Of course,” Brian says, “When I was a young kid and went to stage school there were only

four of them and I didn’t stop working from the age of 12. Now it’s a huge business and there are millions of bloody schools out there taking money off of people who probably shouldn’t even be there. “So I appreciate how difficult it is. You have got to be talented, but you do need luck, and I look at my career and think I’ve had a bit of luck here...” But luck wouldn’t have sustained his career. That is down to talent and hard work. Even after close to five decades on stage and screen, he keeps coming back stronger. In 2023, he has been causing mischief in Eastenders. Another discipline that requires dedication. The call to join the cast came in during Covid, which saw him lose his role in the magnificent 9 to 5 musical when the curtain came down on life as we all knew it, overnight. “It all fell through,” he remembers, “Then suddenly I get a call saying ‘Do you want to be in EastEnders’ and I’m like, ‘Let me check my diary!’” he giggles. “Nothing can prepare you for doing something as huge as EastEnders; it is a juggernaut, and when you are there you can be lost like a rabbit in headlights. “You have got to know where to go, you’ve got to sort out your admin and make sure know what scripts are important to learn, when. At first it is absolutely terrifying, because suddenly you are there with Gillian Taylforth, or Natalie

INTERVIEW Cassidy, or Steve McFadden - people that have been there forever and it is just rolling out of them. “And you’ve got to learn two names – you have to know them by their character and real name!” It’s no secret that Brian will soon be ‘doofdoof-doof-doofing’ his way out of Albert Square – after spending far longer there than the initial contract suggested. “I’ve had the most amazing time over the last two and a half years, but I feel it’s time to spread my wings,” he explains. Not that he fancies taking on his daughter’s angelic role. He’s looking to Manchester for inspiration instead. “I’m thinking of going to do Coronation Street now!” he says, chuckling at his own joke. Brian was last in panto here in the new city six years ago, when he was joined by Gok Wan. Life has changed significantly for everyone since then. The pandemic saw to that. How has life changed for you? “Well, I stopped dying my hair in lockdown,” he smiles, “I had this era – that decade in the 90s when I was on Saturday night TV, getting 15 million viewers a week and I had ‘a look’, and once you’ve got a look, that’s it. You can’t suddenly change it. “But in lockdown I just let it all go and suddenly I was doing EastEnders and I thought

As I’ve got older I think I’m much more content with where I am in life.”

‘this is an opportunity to not worry about it’. I am so glad I did. “Of course, my girls are much older now too, and have very much left home, so in some ways my wife and I have got closer because we haven’t got the headache of worrying about them and picking them up from school and things like that. “As I’ve got older I think I’m much more content with where I am in life, and about what makes me happy and what is important.” Right now, it’s panto that is important on the work front. In order to bring the laughs on stage, a whole load of grafting goes on behind the scenes. “It’s a commitment. When people have paid good money, especially in this climate, I know they want to have a good night and we are gonna take them on that journey. “The big thing that’s always in the back of my mind is they have got to go away and tell their friends – that’s the only way the show will survive and do well. “I always say ‘give me the first week full and we’ll take care of the rest,’ and whether it be a matinee or an evening show we give it everything.” With two performances a day, and only Christmas Day off during the five week run, it’s intense and all consuming. Lucy might pop to the shops to pick up some presents while here, but she won’t be found propping up any bars post-show. “I am definitely going to get home and rest. It’s another leaf I have taken out of dad’s book; when I was 17 I would be like, ‘everyone is going out, shall we go out?’ but dad would always go home. At the time I’d think ‘Why is he doing this?’

‘I am a panto baby’ says Lucy, aka Fairy 312

“Then, when I did the show last year, I messaged him and said, ‘I am so sorry that I ever tried to get you to go out after the show!’” By the time you read this, Lucy will be well into her seasonal countdown: “I’ve started celebrating Christmas on November 1, because I want time to listen to the music and enjoy the season. In panto you get that Christmassy feeling, but it’s not like Christmas at home. Panto is worth it, though, that’s for sure!” Crossroads Pantomimes are bringing this show – and another 23 pantos – to stages across the country. They are the undisputed leaders in their field, with the production values to match. It’s a spectacle in every sense. Take that coach which will take Cinders to the ball... “That’s very special; it has animatronic horses, and it turns 180 degrees,” Brian says, getting technical, “I sit there on top as the coachman, and I look at these big bruisers in the audience, guys who if you saw them in an alley you would be frightened they were gonna beat you up, and they are sitting there with tears in their eyes going, ‘This is why I’m here!” he says, smiling broadly at the memories. What is it that makes this recurring role of Button’s so irresistible? “It’s me – he’s a cheeky young lad,” he pauses, “Well obviously I’m not that, but I have always based a career on that cheekiness. “Milton Keynes is going to be a lot of fun and it has to be in the era we’re in – it has to be an amazing show. “It is so tuned up and all of it works and all of it is making sure that at the end of the night the audience all stand and applaud – and I don’t want polite laughter, I want to see them with their hankies out, I want to see them rocking in the aisles!”

INTERVIEW

‘I believe in the passion of the British public’ Celebrated singer Will Young is also an Olivier Award nominated actor, and a passionate advocate for animal rights, and his latest ‘role’ is one of his most important. It’s not enough for him to simply put his name to a campaign – the committed activist has launched a petition demanding an end to any form of testing on animals in the UK, most specifically our four legged friends. He spoke to Pulse’s Sammy Jones about his very special cause...

“I

think dogs, and our pets in general are our confidantes,” Will starts, “They provide unadulterated love. They are just great for so many reasons; they get us out of the house, and they bring a lot of joy into my life...” Will speaks from experience – he currently has three dogs at home, and is pooch pa to border terrier Esme, and pitbull mixes Iris and Domino, who Will rescued from a kill shelter in Los Angeles during the pandemic. “They were about an hour away from being put down...” As a ‘nation of dog lovers’ we are ruled by our paw-fect companions, and yet, in 2022, more than 4000 dogs were experimented on in Great Britain, enduring psychological trauma and pain and suffering. “It used to be, ‘Well, we’re allowed a certain amount of cruelty if it’s getting results, but it’s just not getting results,” Will said, “It is just a system that has been forgotten about and it takes someone like myself to point it out and go, ‘Hang on, this system is archaic.’ “Understandably it has been forgotten about because there is a lot of stuff to concentrate on in running this country, but I think it is time to update.” An All-Party Parliamentary Group has acknowledged that 92% of drugs fail in human trials despite being tested on animals, which should be all the evidence needed to call time on this unnecessary practice. “I spend a lot of time talking about the science because you can’t debate it – the non-animal testing methods are so much better, even Pfizer and AstraZeneca stood up in a conference in Toronto three months ago and said ‘we don’t even want to be testing on dogs’. “They said, ‘We don’t want to, we have to and we don’t get any results from it’ – that’s two big pharmaceutical companies,” Will emphasises.

INTERVIEW

Will has created what he calls a ‘coalition’ of likeminded people who are working for positive change. “I have been speaking to very smart people,” he tells me, listing people including Chris Packham and Deborah Meaden. “I talk to Animal Aid, I talk to top scientists who do non-animal testing methods, I talk to the brand Lush, this is across the board. “These aren’t people who are disruptors, these are people who are very bright and want the best for animals, and actually want the best for humanity.” He cites a law change in Europe as a prime example of change for good – testing for cosmetics is now a thing of the past there. “It’s a good example of a roadmap of law change making companies change their policies and now they are all done on non-animal methods; no one has died, the industry hasn’t crashed, so there is a roadmap for how you can ban testing on dogs.” So why are we not moving with the times? Why is it still acceptable to inflict such horror on these poor animals? “I think it’s undeniable that we’ve had a government where a lot of them have got drunk on the attention and taken their focus away from the citizens of this country and more into navel gazing at themselves, so you are never going to get results for humanity or indeed animals.

An All-Party Parliamentary Group has acknowledged that 92% of drugs fail in human trials despite being tested on animals...”

“I actually find it very energising. I enjoy how politics works,” Will admits, indeed he studied politics before finding fame, “I enjoy the bustle of it, it’s a little bit of a card game, but I like that. “I think that’s fun – I like seeing positive change.” When Will discovered MBR acres in Cambridgeshire, he handcuffed himself to the gates of the puppy breeding facility, supporting many other activists in the drive to have the unit shut down. His involvement raised the profile of the campaign, and led to him spearheading this petition. Instead of trying to shock people into action by using uncomfortable lab images, Will prefers to use the power of the word for change: “From a campaigning point of view often imagery turns people off, so I try to focus on the amazing science that there is now which is way more efficient, obviously less cruel and also a massively burgeoning industry - growing at 700% a year. It is an industry that the UK could be really getting involved with more, so I am really hoping that will happen. “The imagery I’ve seen is from a legal puppy breeding facility, and I know the conditions that they’re in - not just the awful conditions, which no-one seemed to want to do anything about, but also the dogs being bled out and that is pretty awful to see. It is quite telling that there aren’t many images you can find anywhere of dogs being tested on, because scientists know that’s not popular...” Let’s look at a best-case scenario – how soon could some of these tests be relegated to the past? “Probably two years once a government gets into power” he thinks, “and if I’m honest the best case scenario is that it’s a Labour Government who have a much better record on animal rights.

Will Young - standing up for the voiceless Pic: Michael Wharley

“And we need a good home secretary, not a monster, or unhinged pantomime baddie that we have at the moment,” he says, talking of Suella Braverman who is still Home Secretary when we talk, although, as it would transpire, not for too much longer after our chat. They say ‘a week is a long time in politics’ for a reason. It should be a no brainer for people to click and sign this petition, shouldn’t it? “Well, that’s what I think, and this isn’t a shaming thing, I just think if you are a dog owner or a pet owner, it’s a given,” Will says, “One has to ask why it doesn’t happen; people have busy lives, people have only a certain amount of bandwidth for things, but I think this is a really positive thing. I believe in the passion and the care of the British public.”

“I think it’s interesting that someone like Zac Goldsmith left the party, and one of the primary reasons was because of the Tories lack of movement on animal rights as well as the environment. I think that’s quite telling. “But I think it’s looking positive that there are companies like AstraZeneca who are saying ‘We have to legally do this,’ they don’t want to be torturing these poor beagles.” Knowing what the dogs are going through out of the sight of Will with his dog Domino, © Will Young public view would weigh heavily on some people. Will concentrates on the positives. “That’s probably because of the type of person > Search for Ban the use of dogs for testing and I am,” he thinks, “I like to see the positive and research purposes in the UK petition, the momentum, I also think it’s quite a privilege click to https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/645885 to be able to be in a position to give animals or or scan the QR code humans voices that don’t necessarily have a voice, or feel like they have a voice.

With plenty of light, high-speed internet and convenient charging stations, you can be sure to stay connected in this home away from home. As aforementioned, KiKi’s is family-centred and family-run – Ruby’s passion for food and hospitality led her to establish KiKi’s alongside her husband Shaz (who also runs a dental practise called Dental Works located next door to the café) and son Faizan – who’s niece Kira is KiKi’s namesake. KiKi’s food selection is inspired by Ruby’s travels and experiences of different cultures. In fact, their menu has

recently been transformed by local chef Aaron Johnson of ‘Chef Hat Home.’ Aaron, who has over 15 years of kitchen experience, now runs his own catering company where he offers private dining, wedding catering, corporate events and gala dinners. Having worked at fine dining establishments in Australia, as Head Chef at the Carrington Arms in Moulsoe, Robinson’s in Newport Pagnell and the Chester Arms in Chicheley before moving into corporate hospitality as Head Chef for Mercedes Benz, Aaron has also joined KiKi’s as their Consultant Chef. On this particular evening, KiKi’s Café and Chef Aaron hosted an invite-only dinner as a ‘pop-up’ supper club – something which KiKi’s

are keen to host more of in the future (so keep a beady eye on their social media accounts and website for further announcements!) Our threecourse meal was perfectly crafted and small, but perfectly formed – the real essence of fine dining. Our starter consisted of whipped goat’s cheese, beetroot, orange and horseradish with confit duck terrine, which I think had to be my favourite of the three courses (as an avid goat’s cheese and beetroot fan!) For my main dish, I opted for the wild mushroom and sage stuffed chicken breast, Pommes Anna, glazed carrots and chicken jus which was also delicious. The vegetarian option of mushroom Wellington also looked mouth-wateringly appealing! For dessert we had meringue, lemon curd, lemon sorbet and blackberries which was slightly sweet and super tart – the perfect palate cleanser to round off our meal. Kiki’s Cafe truly is a destination for all seasons and events. Supporting other local businesses such as Chouxly Scrumptious and Cheeky Cheesecakes for their baked goods cabinet, alongside their known brunch offering, they can cater for all sorts. KiKi’s offer: private parties and events; craft classes – they currently collaborate monthly with ‘Something Less Boring’ for a monthly art club; and children’s parties – with their next upcoming event ‘Breakfast with Elsa’ available to book on their website now. Whatever you’re looking for, why not consider this stunning spot that sits right in the centre of Milton Keynes. > iIf you would like Emma to visit and review your restaurant please get in touch at mkpulse@pulsegroupmedia.co.uk Follow Emma on Instagram: @emmaroseeats

MUSIC

Songs to get you rocking around the Christmas tree Music and merriment go hand in hand at Christmas, and when it comes to the former, the new city’s charity store Off The Record has all you need to soundtrack the season. Pulse’s self-confessed vinyl junkie Sammy Jones popped along to the Midsummer Place store for a rummage through the racks...

C

hristmas seems to arrive earlier every year, but it is still mind boggling to think that Mariah Carey’s ‘love it or loathe it’ festive number All I Want For Christmas Is You was downloaded a whopping 300,000 times on September 1. It’s still officially summer! As Noddy Holder never said, ‘It’s not Christmaaaaas yet!’ But as we look towards the arrival of advent and seasonal songs are blaring from radios, accompanying the constant stream of advertisements on the small screen and in every supermarket, festive tunes are here to stay until January. And, whether you want to celebrate with Paul McCartney or have a right old knees up with Chas & Dave, Off The Record has the best – and most eclectic mix – for miles around. Remember a few years ago when the industry insisted that vinyl was only good for frisbees and that streaming music was the way forward? They got it wrong and sales of the black stuff have gone through the roof in recent years, which has proven to be a gift for local charity Willen Hospice, which finds previously loved music collections new homes while swelling the coffers for its essential work. I regularly flick through the cases of vinyl, 40

But Christmas vinyl? I’ve never been bothered by that. Until now. The store has its own seasonal section, pulling together the obvious, the obscure and occasionally, the downright bizarre! “We’ve got material to cover practically all genres, and all tastes,” promises Graham Bishop, team leader with Willen Hospice who sources music products for the store, “From the classic to the classical and pop to the pan pipes! “Whatever you are looking for, we’ve got the right release to get your party started, and you’ll be helping the hospice to help others at the same time.” The Disney brand took some of its biggest stars into the studio to put their own spin on snow-capped favourites; Dewey, Huey, Louie and Daisy Duck handled vocal duties on The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Goofy took on White Christmas and Mickey Mouse and The Gang were responsible for Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer! The aforementioned Chas ‘n’ Dave’s Christmas Jamboree Bag from 1981 steers away from songs about snowmen and mangers, and instead rolls out proper sing-along favourites like Run Rabbit Run, Any Old Iron and the George Formby classic, When I’m Cleaning Windows. From the looks Queen Bey wore throughout her recent Renaissance tour, in celebration of her disco-themed album, to the designs at Valentino and Rodarte – icy cold, silvery looks should make your wardrobe wishlist right now. DIGGING DEEP The parasitic plant

we pucker up to!

I

t might have fallen out of favour briefly when the pandemic restricted contact, including smooching, but that was just a blip in our long-lasting love affair with mistletoe. Historically, mistletoe has been considered a protection against evil, and an aid to health and fertility. While we no longer subscribe to those notions, the green sprigs and its sticky white berries are still a common festive sight; sprigs are held aloft in the hope of a cheeky peck, and the distinctive plant still features widely in Christmas decorations. Mistletoe is semi-parasitic, meaning it grows on host trees, the most common including apple and poplar. Its large globular shapes make it easily recognisable in the tops of trees. Mistletoe won’t kill the tree it lives on, but it will absorb water and nutrients, which can leave the host weakened. If you intend working them into your own Once you have your berries, choose a branch festive features, or hang some above a from the tree which is at least 10 cm thick and doorway, it is important to remember that open to receiving lots of light – it should be every part of the plant is poisonous to us, and high up. to our canine and feline friends, so do keep Ideally, you’ll find a small crevice in the bark, yours away from little folks, pooches and cats. but failing that you can make a small slice Birds are partial to the berries though, and in the bark, lift it and insert the seeds; when cleaning their beaks – or through plant several rather than one or their waste – they unknowingly two at each spot – they won’t spread the seeds, allowing them all germinate and so more to latch onto a new host and seeds means more chance begin the slow process of success. of germination. How does your garden grow?

D

ecember’s weather is often the worst of the year but there is much to do in the garden. We have broad beans growing in pots in the cold frame and two rows in the raised bed. A few of the sweet pea seedlings need pricking out at 10cm and kept in good light. The children have sown two rows of pak choi and rocket for succession and have looked at ‘spring 24’ catalogues, to choose and order seeds for next year. In the orchard we will prune the long shoots of the apple and pear trees, back to the second or third buds, to encourage fruit bud development. The cordons and espaliers will be pruned as well. Prune clematis ‘jackmanii’ and viticella either down to 12” (30cm) or leave a framework of stem up to 36” (90cm). Also, prune wisteria tidily back to its trellis, to two to three buds from the main branch framework. Dogwoods and cornus should be pruned hard, down to 12” (30cm) to promote the growth of brightly coloured new shoots, which are so cheery in early spring. It is not too late to plant any remaining tulip bulbs in containers or in the ground. Any forced hyacinths should be brought into the light and put into a warmer place when the flower buds emerge. Temperatures in the greenhouse should be checked and the heater set to keep a minimum of 4°C if possible. The birds’ water and feed areas should be topped up during the cold, short days. Save Big on Energy Bills with T&K Home Improvements Established 1979

A

s winter approaches and the cost of living continues to rise, finding ways to stay warm without breaking the bank is a top priority. At T&K Home Improvements, they not only understand the importance of keeping your home cosy but also how to make it energy efficient.

Here are their tips to save on energy bills this winter… Efficient Heating Habits: Over half of energy bills go towards heating and hot water. Consider changes such as only heating occupied rooms, lowering your thermostat, and investing in quality draught proofing. T&K Home Improvements can enhance your home's insulation with services like double glazing, reducing energy consumption and saving you money. 48

Smart Kitchen Practices: Simple changes in the kitchen can make a big impact. Things like boiling only the water you need, and regularly defrosting your fridge freezer will increase energy efficiency. T&K's focus on insulation also extends to energy-efficient windows, helping to maintain a comfortable temperature in your kitchen. Appliance Efficiency: Condenser tumble dryers and American-style fridge freezers are costly to run. T&K advises changing how you use these appliances for positive differences in energy payments. Additionally, washing clothes at a lower temperature can cut costs significantly. Insulation Matters: Improve your home's insulation to have the most significant impact on your energy bills. T&K’s services will stop heat from escaping through gaps around doors and windows, providing cost savings and a cosier home.

Review Energy Bills for Small Savings: While energy prices may not be at their lowest, small savings can still be achieved. Consider switching to paperless billing, managing your account online, and paying by direct debit for cost-effective solutions. Energy-Saving Apps: Leverage energy-saving apps that provide detailed information about your energy usage. You can also embrace smart thermostats that allow remote heating control via your mobile device. As the colder months approach, T&K Home Improvements is here to ensure your home is not only warm and comfortable but also energy efficient. Visit www.tkhi.co.uk to explore their services and start saving on energy bills today.

MK CITY COUNCIL

City Council to provide more cost-of-living help this winter

T

he soaring cost of living continues to impact households, families and vulnerable residents across Milton Keynes. The latest figures show that one in five people in this country are ‘occasionally, hardly or never’ able to keep comfortable warm – and one in 20 people struggle to buy enough food. Milton Keynes City Council is committed to mitigating the impact of the current cost-of-living crisis and will be spending over £5m to do so this winter. The funding will help people facing food and energy insecurity, and will ensure investment in preventative measures that will relieve the growing pressure on struggling health and social care services. It has been found that the cost-of-living crisis disproportionately affects our most vulnerable residents, such as disabled people, who as a group are more likely to be unemployed but may have extra costs for energy use or specialist food. In addition, colder homes put people with health vulnerabilities at greater risk of stays in hospital or other care. For children, living in cold homes without enough to eat may mean they do less well at school, which could ultimately limit their life opportunities. These devastating personal impacts not only impact residents directly, but also put extra pressure on services such as the NHS, schools, and social care. Last year, the City Council declared a cost-of-living emergency and spent over £3m supporting projects that provided food, reduced energy bills, and gave other help to our most vulnerable residents. The City Council also recognises that the cost-of-living crisis is far from over, and that more can be done, so plans to extend the support by an extra £5.5m through 2023/24’s Winter Plan. This year, our expanded support includes: Help for children and families – Families of children who are entitled to free school meals will be given £15 of supermarket credit per child for each week of the two-week Christmas holiday and one-week February half term. We will also continue the well50

attended children’s activity programme, which offers free childcare, food fun activities, between 2nd and 5th January. Funding charities to help their work go further – The City Council will provide a financial boost to food charities including the MK Food Bank, and to organisations who give residents financial/debt advice, including Citizens Advice, so they can reach more people. Helping people who are falling into rent arrears – Providing financial help and guidance for council tenants and private renters who are struggling to make ends meet. Funding warm spaces – MK’s Parish and Town Councils will be given money to help them run informal activities, ranging from community cafes to social clubs. Reducing energy and housing costs – A warmth and wellbeing helpline continues, offering advice to residents on how to get support with energy costs. Local people can call freephone 0800 1070044 Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm to speak to the helpline team, who can also advise on wider issues such as avoiding debt, loneliness, and accessibility. Those who are worried about their finances can find out what help is available by visiting www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/benefits/cost-living-support.

Iain Stewart MP and Ben Everitt MP meet with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Michelle Donelan, ahead of the AI Summit at Bletchley Park

The future of AI starts in Milton Keynes and MK CAN

A

s we enter December, I have started counting down the days until Christmas. At the time of writing this, my annual Christmas Card Competition is underway as I ask local pupils to design the artwork for the Christmas card I send to my family and friends.

AI Safety Summit I am thrilled Bletchley Park was able to host the successful AI Safety Summit on 1 & 2 November. It is fitting that the birthplace of modern computing was the venue for conversations about the future use of artificial intelligence. It was a privilege to have been able to welcome the Prime Minister and the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology to Bletchley Park ahead of their meetings with world leaders and tech CEOs. The outcome, the Bletchley Declaration, is a landmark statement which has been signed by multiple countries including the United States of America and China to understand the risks of AI. Bank of England Roundtable The Deputy Governor of the Bank of England, Sir David Ramsden, visited Milton Keynes for a roundtable with a range of local businesses, organisations and representatives to hear the opportunities and challenges that are available in the different industries and sectors. I welcomed the opportunity to discuss the current economic landscape both locally in Milton Keynes and nationally across the country. I would like to thank Sir David for providing this opportunity to local businesses and organisations, I am sure he had plenty of food for thought after the discussion. Over 55s Fair On Friday 3 November, Ben Everitt MP and I hosted our annual Over 55s Fair at Hazard Alley Safety Centre. With over 30 different local organisations advertising opportunities for constituents to improve their health, safety and wellbeing, it was great to see it well attended by members of the public. I would like to thank all the 52

attending exhibitors and the venue for making the event possible! Overall, the Over 55s Fair was another a success and I look forward to hosting the third one next year. MK CAN It was brilliant to be involved with MK Food Bank’s Guinness World Record Attempt at Campbell Park with Milton Keynes Conservative colleagues. I was pleased to have contributed to the line of 102,447 cans, a new Guinness World Record! I would like to congratulate everyone who was involved in making this possible. All of these cans will enable MK Food Bank to support families through Winter and into Spring. Proposed Closure of Ticket Offices I welcomed the Government’s decision to heed the recommendations of the Transport Select Committee regarding proposed closures of rail ticket offices. As Chair of the Committee, I am delighted to have been able to influence this decision. The proposals put forward by train operating companies go too far, too fast, towards a situation that risks excluding some passengers from the railway. At a minimum, changes should be carefully piloted in limited areas and evaluated for their effect on all passengers before being rolled out. If my office or I can be of any assistance, please do get in touch on the contact details provided.

MPS OUT & ABOUT

Thriving over 55s Fair and tackling homelessness

I

can’t believe it’s that time of year again, but as I’m writing December’s MK Pulse column I want to wish everyone in and around Milton Keynes a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! It’s now four years since I was elected as your Member of Parliament, and I am extremely proud to continue to represent the people of Milton Keynes North in Westminster. Despite the challenges of my first two years being affected by the pandemic and not being able to get out and about and meet people, I am so proud of some of our successes. From securing an amendment to the Domestic Abuse Act to ensure victims get priority housing, to the opening of the Maple Centre at MK Hospital using £10 million of Government funding, to working with the Police and Crime Commissioner to launch Op Deter to tackle knife crime, to securing funding to protect at-risk bus services in Milton Keynes, it’s certainly been a busy time!

Ben with the Good Gym at the Over 55s Fair

fantastic to meet with their local team at their base in Greenleys recently. Depaul Nightstop volunteers offer their spare room for the night, providing young people at risk of homelessness with the time, support and safety they need to start again. This is an incredible opportunity for anybody who may be able to help somebody at-risk of homelessness. You can find out more at www.depaul.org.uk/nightstop-volunteer. We have also secured millions of pounds worth of funding from the Government in the last few years to tackle homelessness in the city and I sit on the APPG for Ending Homelessness in Parliament to look at what more we can do to support vulnerable people.

Funding For Stantonbury Swimming Pool In my last column I spoke about the importance of protecting local swimming pools and I’m delighted to confirm the Government has provided tens of thousands of pounds in extra funding to Stantonbury Leisure Centre through the latest phase of the Swimming Pool Support Fund. Another round of funding from the Government is on the way and I am once again hoping we will be able to secure further funding for swimming pools in Milton Keynes which can be such a vital boost to physical and mental health. Over 55s Fair Success I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everybody who attended the Over 55s Fair I hosted with Iain Stewart, the Milton Keynes South MP, last month. And of course a thank you to all the charities, organisations and businesses who had a stall at the event to showcase what they can offer to local residents. It was great to see so many more people attend than last year and create a real buzz throughout the day and we are extremely grateful to The Safety Centre and their volunteers for all the hard work they put in to host the fair. Tackling Homelessness Homelessness charity Depaul are doing incredible work to help people at-risk of homelessness in Milton Keynes and it was

Free-To-Access Chronic Joint Pain Programme It was really interesting to head to Nuffield Health’s gym in the Xscape to hear about their free-to-access programme in Milton Keynes for people living with chronic joint pain. The 12-week programme, which is led by Rehabilitation Specialists, has been designed to help people to selfmanage chronic joint pain and from speaking to some of the people taking part in the scheme it was amazing to hear just how much the programme is benefitting them. Also this month… •W e have extended the £2 bus fare cap benefitting bus users in Milton Keynes until December 2024 • I ’ve signed a letter calling on the Prime Minister to ensure we pass a ban on trophy hunting imports •W e’ve increased the grants people can receive to install heat pumps in their homes to £7,500 to help more people make the switch to greener energy

R

ecognised as one of the founding fathers of the punk era, Eddie & The Hot Rods have been playing loud, fast, in your face Rock n Roll since the ‘70s. They preferred that attack rather than ‘bad mouthing the Queen or fermenting anarchy,’ and even without that middle finger in play they struck a chord – their single Do Anything You Wanna Do was eventually withdrawn by Island Records after sales of more than 475,000 kept it in the charts for the whole of the summer of ‘77. Punks loved their attitude and energy, and everyone else was smitten by their RnB, rock and blues components. The loss of frontman Barrie Masters shortly before the pandemic was tragic, but fan support helped the band reach the decision to continue, with Ian Dean now at the mic. The band even released a new album this year; Guardians of the Legacy is their first for 16 years. The band rounds off 2023 with three December dates, and The Craufurd Arms has the first of them (Dec 1). Transmission (Dec 2) will play the sounds of Joy Division with a set delivering the best of the Unknown Pleasures and Closer albums. When Ian Curtis took his own life in 1980, his death brought the curtain down on the Salford unit, but couldn’t curtail their legacy, and more than 40 years on fans still want to relive the dark, cavernous sound of the band, and this is the perfect way to do it. Metallers Urne head out of the big smoke to join us in the new city (Dec 9), as they continue to celebrate the summer release of their ‘savage’ second album, A Feast on Sorrow. The elpee took shape against a background of decidedly difficult times for Joe Nally, the band’s frontman and bass player. 54

There were a lot of dark times,” he sighs, reflecting on two family members affected by degenerative illness. “Losing people is a horrible thing; when reality hits, it shocks you. I was full of pent-up emotion – anger, confusion – and I could only seem to release that through aggression. That means this record is much more aggressive. It’s a lot darker. There were quite a few ‘fun’ elements to our first LP Serpent & Spirit. There aren’t many of those here. “It was an incredibly cathartic experience to be able to write this album, to scream it, to hear it back – and for other people to discover and take from it what they need, too. I’ve got my emotions out. I’ve got my meaning out. I’ve got my message out. What I needed to do is done.” The Girls, Gays & Theys club promotion returns the same evening, when the inclusive event for 18+ delivers a Zand DJ set. The band I Am Kloot might have been retired a good few years back, but frontman John Bramwell is still active. Indeed his promo material says he has been on a ‘never-ending rolling adventure,’ and it sounds like our kind of blissful: “Travelling in his VW Campervan with his dog Henry...John has been able to develop his solo sound and ideas, at his own pace, in the way he likes, with the fans he holds close.’ The man that the New York Times declared to be ‘The UK’s finest export,’ will play the

Wolverton venue on December 14. John’s sophomore album will be cut loose in the new year. London riff-meisters Hang The Ba**ard (Dec 15) are followed by the new city’s Space Pistol (Dec 16), who can’t wait to shake you up in the best fashion as they see out a fab year: “This is going to be a celebration of such a great year for us as a band,” said Dan, “Hitting our stride with a new found confidence as a three-piece, new songs, an album, and a killer set which always leaves us exhausted and absolutely fulfilled! When dressed in pink boiler suits, we aim to put on a show and just enjoy being a band who isn’t fu**ing around anymore, to stop caring about what others think and just play like it’s the last time we will ever get to do this.” And they were doing just that when they put in a sterling performance as support to

Paper. Scissors. Stone. Tune! Katvaly is a new name for the Milton Keynes music scene, although those behind this altelectro dance delivery are stalwarts who have provided plenty of engagement before now. Earlier this month the quartet, which features members of DogzenZendog, cut loose their debut single, Paper Scissors Stone which is a right little catchy builder. Out through Konkarfish Records, Paper Scissors Stone is an electro pop beast with a catchy chorus and plenty of horn (!) and is the first track taken from the band’s upcoming album, Beeta V – you can expect that to drop in March 2024.

The St Pierre Snake Invasion earlier this month. Energy ridden excitement with the songs to match. The Get Gone, Broken Castles and Black Talons will support Space Pistol this time around. Jesus Jones return (Dec 22) with their indie dance meets rock mash-up that delivered earworms like Right Here, Right Now and Real Real Real, and on Christmas Eve eve (Dec 23) the venue presents a Grunge Spectacular with Nerdvana, Smashed In Pumpkins and Freakshow. It’s the big pre-Crimbo bash with one grunge smash after another. This will be busy and festive. Taking the reins for the post-Crimbo bash will be the folks behind the Headcharge promo for a New Years Party happening a little before New Years Eve (Dec 29). The big bill features organisers Torus, Ocular, Balter, Beaucats, Scarper and KC Blackwater. “Everyone is very excited for this date, which will be a perfect way to end the year before we head into lots of exciting things in 2024,” said Torus frontman Alfie Glass.

“KC Blackwater is a new band with immense live energy, and frontman Cam plays in our mates’ band with Alfie Templeman, Scarper is a brand new group fronted by another Templeman live collaborator, Joss Shepherd. Our drummer Jack is also helping them out with live shows, so that will be great to see. “Beaucats will be performing epic new material with a new sound, and super talented young musicians from Northampton, Balter, will be on the stage before jazz fusion, the experimental group Ocular who will showcase a lot of new material to promote their debut album – my brother fronts them!” Alfie and Torus are wrapping things up with new sounds to slide into your ears. “We’ll showcase what we’ve been working on this past new year,” Alfie promised, “It has been a long 2023 and it has been hard at times, but we have some very exciting things coming in the new year. And we mean that,” he said. > Head to thecraufurdarms.com for more.

Space to deliver music for pleasure at MK11 S pace will hit up Kiln Farm venue MK11 (Dec 1) as they near the end of a lengthy spell of touring to mark frontman Tommy Scott’s quarter century songwriting anniversary. The band will play tracks Tommy has penned for all of the Space albums, along with some solo sweeteners, making for a top notch set. It was back in the 1990s when Space turned up on the scene and began bothering the charts with tracks like the irritatingly good Female of the Species and Neighbourhood, at the start of what would develop into a highly fruitful career. Other singles kept up momentum, with tunes like Avenging Angels finding favour with music fans, and albums including Spiders, Tin Planet and Attack of the Mutant 50ft Kebab playing their part in racking up album sales of more than five million. They call their music ‘gritty edgy pop songs,’ which ain’t wrong, and they aren’t about to call time – the band put out the long-player Music For Pleasure Music For Pain in late 2021. > Tickets for the date, part of the ‘25 Years Tour and More’ trek, are available through mk11kilnfarm.com

Also at MK 11 this month...

Band-E-Oke (Dec 1) Your chance to sing along with the songs you love with backing from a live band – tune up and choose from a huge repertoire. Los Pacaminos (Dec 14) Tex-Mex deliverers formed by Paul Young (aye, that one) who still features in the line-up. The Freddie & Queen Experience (Dec 15) Relive the chart-bothering brilliance of Mercury, May, Deacon and Taylor. Their last two dates at the venue have sold out. Buy early. Mad Mods & Englishmen (Dec 22) Roll up for a covers repertoire brimming with hits from The Who, The Small Faces, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Jam and more. The Legendary Christmas Special will come with added festive cheer.

Space will get MK11 rocking on Dec 1

ay Charles told us to go shake it, and this Christmas you’ll be able to do just that, with the return of the Tailfeather promotion. But dilly-dally and you’ll miss out – the motown, soul, funk and rock n’ roll extravaganza is back for one night only, this December 29. “It has been five years since I ran Tailfeather and I’ve had lots of people asking me about doing another event,” deck deliverer Lee Harrington told us, “I stopped running the night because I’d lost the buzz for doing it after several years and wanted to focus on other musical projects.

80s Disco Party Stranger Nights (Dec 22) While the Mad Mods get lively in one part of the venue, over the other side of MK11 an 80s Christmas Disco Party inspired by Stranger Things will be the temptation. Entry is free. Fleetingwood Mac (Dec 23) No explanation needed for this one, surely? Retro Electro (Dec 29) Music by Depeche Mode, Prince, Bowie, Spandau Ballet, Level 42 and more will get you on the floor for this covers band focusing on the sounds from the 80s.

“A global pandemic, venue name change and two children later, and I had the urge to do a one-off event, something big at a special time of year, that’s how the December event came about. People can expect the same fun vibe, great people and classic tunes from Motown, soul, funk, disco and rock ‘n’ roll. “It’s a chance to either escape the family after Christmas, or bring them along!” Lee added. Tailfeather is being hosted at Midsummer Tap in the Theatre District, in the heart of CMK, and the tunes will start spinning from 9pm.

Beautiful Trauma (Dec 30) Stacy Green will get the party started when she takes the mic as P!nk in this tribute to the sounds of the superstar. The Reformers (Dec 30) Entry is free for this seasonal show by the MK quartet of culprits who will dig deep into their seasonal sack and produce material from rock to pop, and glam to punk, putting their own mark on the hits of others.

MOTORING

Civic Hybrid impresses ADAM TUDOR-LANE reviews the Honda Civic Hybrid

M

y fondness for the Honda Civic, a longstanding champion in the family hatchback segment, continues with the latest iteration, which has been transformed into the ‘Civic Hybrid’. Despite sporting a 2.0-litre petrol engine, it promises to be MPG-friendly, but is it? In terms of looks, the Civic has seemingly now completed its ‘Americanisation’. It’s wider, lower, and far more masculine than any of its predecessors. Honda went down this route as they used to build different versions of the Civic for different markets, but not anymore. Prices start at £34,995, which is reasonable, especially for a hybrid. The range-topping ‘Advance’ model, at £39,795, offers an extra array of niceties, but the entry-level ‘Elegance’ is the more tempting option, given the high standard equipment across the range. The efficiency of the Civic Hybrid impresses, building on the legacy of the beloved 1.6 i-DTEC diesel. While the diesel variant from yesteryear boasted exceptional MPG, the petrol hybrid

holds its own, achieving a commendable 57 MPG over 250 miles. Which equates to a 10 MPG reduction over the 1.6 diesel. Honda deserves praise for bringing a hybrid so close to the efficiency levels of traditional diesel engines, but we’re not quite there yet. Performance-wise, the Civic excels at motorway cruising as well as navigating twisty back roads with its responsive engine, precise steering, and well-balanced chassis shining through. Clocking a 7.8-second sprint to 60 MPH, the 315 Nm of torque adds punch to make it feel nippier than it really is, while the CVT gearbox kept up with ease and acted more like a regular ‘automatic’ than any CVT I’ve ever driven. Inside the Civic you’ll find a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a built-in sat nav. All models also feature Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to further enhance connectivity. The ‘Advance’ model takes the driving experience up a notch with a fully digital dial display, while the lesser models make do with traditional analogue dials.

FACTS AT A GLANCE Top Speed: 111 MPH Performance: 0-60 in 7.8 seconds Power: 140 BHP Economy: 57 MPG

Though not groundbreaking, the interior design has a quality feel, complemented by physical climate control buttons – which are becoming scarce in a world of ‘everything in the touchscreen’. Rear passengers have ample legroom, and the spacious 404-litre boot adds to the Civic’s practical appeal. Honda’s Civic Hybrid proves to be a wellrounded addition to a rapidly shrinking mid-sized hatchback segment. Its comfortable ride and responsive handling make it ideal for both the daily commute and those longer motorway journeys, with the hybrid powertrain striking a balance, delivering impressive fuel economy without compromising performance. The 2023 Civic Hybrid is a wise choice for those who prioritise substance over flashy looks.

had hoped to report a conclusion to the sale of O’Hara Towers. Almost, but not quite. We had a replacement buyer after the first was forced to withdraw. A bigger, cheaper, better alternative property came up after the first was lost due to that withdrawal. All looked good. We were happy and I was particularly relieved not to be forced into unpacking the boxes. The house price had reflected the desire for a quick sale. Our new buyer made an offer knowing we wanted to Complete during November 2023. That was the deal. Cheap house for a quick sale; completing ahead of Christmas. When a week passed between our buyer’s successful mortgage application and instructing a surveyor to undertake a Level 3 survey, alarm bells sounded. The most expensive survey option seemed to suggest the commitment of our buyer, but the earliest surveyor appointment available was a week further on, meaning a two-week delay! We spoke to our estate agent and they questioned the buyer and came back with, “The buyer intends to Complete no sooner than February 2024.” Reminder: their offer had been accepted on the basis of a November 2023 Naturally, the O’Hara household was livid. We asked the estate agent to communicate our displeasure and make it clear that we considered their intention to be unacceptable. Privately, we decided that we no longer had any confidence in the buyer. Their response was anticipated with curiosity rather than any belief that they would say or do anything that worked for us. Then the surveyor made contact and asked if it was possible to move the appointment forward five days. Did it indicate our buyer realised that they were risking a bargain?

8

1 A nice man came along and spent many hours poking and prodding bits of the house. He made notes. He pulled many faces. He made more notes. Eventually, he finished, we bade him farewell, then he mentioned that the house seemed fine and as to be expected of a twenty-two years old house. We reported to our estate agent. They came back the following day with the news that our buyer stated they would be instructing their solicitor to not issue any queries to ours until after the surveyor’s report was received. We received a clean bill of health the first time around, so we were even less impressed… Our buyer had incurred sundry legal fees, over £800 in surveyor fees, and our serious displeasure. A forty-eighthour deadline for communication between our respective legal representatives to commence was issued, meanwhile we explored a third buyer.

Your stars

HOWARD PARKER

Flavour of the Times - It’s nice to be able to look at the chart for this month and feel that things will be a little less intense and claustrophobic in December. We are over that dark Scorpio period as the Sun and Mars move into out-going Sagittarius and we can stretch our wings a little. A few less surprises around the corner too so hopefully we can relax and allow ourselves to feel a little bit more optimistic all round. However (why is there always a ‘however’?!), Saturn is back in Pisces, which is difficult and we will have to see how this pans out as it gets going. Yes, the structures of society are still falling apart but maybe soon some rebuilding can start to take place.

THE ASTRO-GUIDE

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22

ARIES March 21 – April 20

LEO July 24 – August 23

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 20

TAURUS April 21 – May 21

VIRGO August 24 – September 23

AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19

GEMINI May 22 – June 21

You may have felt very out-of-sorts last month but December is going to feel much more to your liking. Sagittarius gives us a bit more fire and Mars in this sign adds some action to this. The only danger is that of too much shouting and too little listening, so don’t go overboard with berating everyone with your strongly held opinions that you probably held in all last month!

The 21st looks like a particularly good day in a more active month for you. The moon in your sign aligns with the Sun and Mars then, so go for it. Mind you, it’s probably Christmas shopping isn’t it? Still, you should have the energy to blast though any lethargy and fatigue. The new Moon in Sagittarius a week earlier is also a good energiser for you.

Love and money may arise to challenge you a bit this month as Venus opposes the unpredictable Uranus. Jupiter may encourage you to over-spend and over-extend yourself so it’s probably best to rein that in. The new moon is also expansionist and perhaps that is about being considerate toward others – the Christmas spirit, no less! Your foodbank probably needs you!

We are getting to the last gasp of Pluto in your sign now and it’s fair to say it’s pretty much worn out its welcome. The worst thing to do is resist the changes that are coming in the new year and stick to the tried and trusted methods because the wheels will soon be coming off treasured ideas and ways of living. You get a last chance to refocus next month, but this month is not a time for risk taking.

The energy you’ve been lacking will hopefully come back a bit this month. The Sun and Mars in Sagittarius gives us all a boost and the new moon in that sign on 13th may give you some ideas about where to go next. Expect some ‘interesting’ stuff around love and money to pop up a week later near the 21st. It’s not something you can’t deal with, but it will require some adjustments.

The new moon is in Sagittarius this month, which may pull you a bit out of your comfort zone. It is inviting you to think bigger and look wider and further afield than you usually do. Maybe you enjoy gossip just that bit too much and really should stop spreading it? Geminis have a quiet side to their gregarious characters too, so perhaps this is not the right time for being too much ‘out there’.

PISCES February 20 – March 20

CANCER June 22 – July 23

Stick with what you know and if necessary, cling to the wreckage all around you! Sagittarius might make you feel as if you want to make big changes but that’s probably not a good idea right now. Cultivating a gentle dissolving into the quiet dark months of winter is probably a good thing because that is when the batteries get a chance to recharge.

Last month’s Scorpionic influence may have been a bit unsettling but at least you could use the intensity to care deeply for people around you who are suffering. This month, though, people don’t need that quite so much and you may feel a little abandoned to your own emotions. It’s not that they don’t care it’s just the energy of the moment and it won’t last. Just enjoy the respite!

PUZZLE

SOLUTIONS

You are bound to be affected personally by some if not all of the massive changes that are taking place this year. An astrological reading of your chart can forewarn you about how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you on a personal level during 2023, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. This is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year. Sagittarius brings a sense of openness and optimism and this works for you Librans. You like looking at different options and then not committing, so this will probably make for a month where you can wallow in your indecisiveness, and it doesn’t matter too much! Just make sure you have people around you who are a bit more focused than you are!

SCORPIO October 24 – November 22

Uranus opposite Venus in your sign towards the end of the month might bring you something unexpected. Venus rules love and money so it could be either! It could be something that has been gestating for a while, but you may still be surprised by what actually pops up and you may have to work out how to deal with the energy of it.

Chart readings with me start at £67 and last for an hour on Zoom or Skype. Please go to www.astroguidance.co.uk for more details and to book a session. With Mercury about to go direct again at the new moon, your channels of communication are probably opening up. There’s some sense of freedom to be experienced here although you tend to get nervous about losing control, don’t you? It’s about using the Sagittarian spirit of freedom to create order in your life. And of course, there’s Christmas to organise…

There may have been a bit of sexy spice in the air last month but it’s floating away from you now and there’s little to cling on to this time round. Enjoy the sense of freedom this gives you and maybe give your ego a break. Theres a lot to be said for escaping – even from yourself - for a little while and seeing the bigger picture out there. That’s the teaching of Sagittarius.
