It’s good to see the Spring arriving and there’s a lot happening too. For example, the students at Stowe School are busy helping the Willen Hospice fundraisers. They’re checking the pre-loved goods donated for the charity’s shop and online sales and learning some valuable business lessons too.

It’s time for keen gardeners to get busy as well. Have you done your post-winter garden tidy? Top of the ‘to do’ list now is planting summer-flowering bulbs, so get going with your gladioli. You can plant your strawberries and cabbage and cauliflowers under cloches.

Then you’ll deserve a well-earned treat at MK Theatre, which has a packed programme this month. There’s still time to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you can reminisce with Sounds of the 60s, the soothing sounds of popular Luther Vandross titles, or see the hair-raising exploits of Rapunzel.

Don’t forget, you only have a few more weeks to register to vote or apply for a Voter Authority Certificate for the City and Parish Council elections on 4 May. You won’t want to miss your chance to take part.

K Pulse and our sister title Business MK are delighted to support the Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival again this year. It takes place on 22 July, but you can enter now, which will leave you plenty of time to prepare. Up to 48 teams are expected to take part, so there’s a good chance they can exceed last year’s fantastic fundraising total of £37,500.

Willen Hospice teams up with students from Stowe School in new business initiative

Students at Stowe School near Buckingham are playing their part in the ongoing fundraising drive by Willen Hospice.

be involved in activities where they can develop their skills in active learning, emotional intelligence, creativity, innovation, communication, technology, leadership, social literacy and analytical thinking,” she added.

The partnership helps Willen Hospice to increase its online sales and boost its fundraising. The hospice needs to raise £5.9 million every year to deliver its services. Less than 20 per cent of its funding comes from the government.

Stowe has donated clothing and accessories worth around £2,000 for resale. Last month more than 40 students and their teachers volunteered at The Point in Central Milton Keynes and at the hospice in Willen.

The Milton Keynes-based charity has partnered with the public school to help the sales of donated goods via the hospice’s online retail shops as well as sites such as ebay and Depop.

Stowe students – Stoics, as they are known – are checking items for damage, measuring products, calculating suitable online prices, writing descriptions of and photographing items.

The work is part of weekly volunteering carried out by fourth form students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award.

“This project suits us perfectly as it can be accomplished onsite, and will help to round their education through development of their volunteering ethos and change-maker skills,” said teacher Jessica Nichols.

The school encourages its Stoics to

“Helping in this way will grow our online inventory and ultimately increase the amount raised for our hospice,” says Dulcie Stewart, the hospice’s commercial manager, online retail. “The students, supervised by their teachers, are sorting, photographing and carefully preparing the items for resale on our online platforms. They also conduct online research to produce accurate and realistic pricing, so that items have a good chance of selling for the maximum price.”

Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival is coming to Willen Lake for the 20th year!

Entries are open for this year’s Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival which returns to Willen Lake in July.

Festival organiser NewWave Events is expecting up to 48 teams to sign up and beat the 2022 fundraising total of £37,500, all going to local charities.

The Dragon Boat Festival is again supported by MK Pulse, its sister title Business MK, MKFM and MK Charities. Up to 48 crews take part in the races, which will take place this year at Willen Lake on July 22. As last year, crews – many of whom represent businesses across Milton Keynes – can raise money for a charity of their choice.

The top fundraisers will win a charity trophy and the sponsorship raised by the participating teams is expected to make a significant contribution to the charities in and around Milton Keynes.

“We are thrilled to announce that the event returns for 2023. The event raised an amazing amount for charities in 2022 and we are hoping to beat this amount this year. We are super excited to see all the amazing companies

that enter year on year and we are also looking forward to seeing some new ones. Our dragons are ready and waiting, so see you all for a great day of fundraising and teambuilding.”

said New Wave Events executive director Alicja Mierzejewska.

Fellow executive director Lucy Morton added: “The Milton Keynes Dragon Boat Festival has such an amazing community feel and it is great

to be able to bring people together this way for the benefit of so many fantastic local charities.”

As in 2022, the festival will be using smaller 30-feet long dragon boats – holding up to 11 crew – to make it easier for companies and organisations of all sizes to enter teams. Entries represent a mix of new and returning crews, all with the same aim in mind – to enjoy a fabulous day out with colleagues and friends and make a difference in their community. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit and enthusiasm. The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races.

Enhanced Gold and Silver entry packages are available which include marketing benefits such as the company’s logo on each side of a dragon boat as well as a significant donation to the charity of their choice.

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust!

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a lightall fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords

are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.

Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been

referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’

So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have

any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window

once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

Hospital in Milton Keynes welcomes new Executive Director

The Saxon Clinic has announced the appointment of a new Executive Director Oliver Doyle. Oliver who lives in Leighton Buzzard, began his working life 10 years ago at Saxon Clinic as an admin assistant. Oliver’s plans for the future of Saxon Clinic are underpinned by how he has seen healthcare change since working in the sector, and how patient behaviour has changed in that time.

Oliver said:“The pandemic has allowed us to appreciate what is important and to remind us all that we cannot take our health for granted and need to make the most of our free time. There is a desire from patients to get back to doing the things that are important to them faster than ever so providing the

access to do that is vitally important in meeting patients demand.”

Oliver went on to explain the importance of forming key local relationships, particularly with NHS Trusts and businesses in the community, something he hopes to do more of.

Saxon Clinic recognises the need of patients in Milton Keynes and with the newly announced city status, there is a clear demand and need for a private healthcare facility that supports the local population.

Saxon Clinic is looking forward to what it’s new Executive Director will bring to the hospital, and to seeing how it will develop with his support and ideas.

‘We very much look forward to welcoming our youngest and newest Swanbournians’

Swanbourne House, an independent prep school near Milton Keynes, is expanding with the opening of a new pre-reception class in September 2023.

Mrs Ruth Nicoll, Head of Lower School at Swanbourne House, says: “This is an incredibly exciting time for the school as we open our new pre-reception class and welcome children from the age of three to Swanbourne House once again.”

For Swanbourne House’s Lower School, it has been an important year of investment and development.

“We started the academic year with the both the building of our brand new 20ft play structure The Fort and the installation of new and improved floor play graphics - including a particularly popular solar system,” says Mrs Nicoll. “We now look ahead to the

enhancement of our Magic Garden and refurbishment of our pre-reception class in anticipation of opening our pre-reception in

September.”

Pupils joining the Lower School’s pre-reception will have the opportunity to be taught by a

qualified Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) teacher and teaching assistant in a maximum class size of 16. They will take part in Forest School in Swanbourne’s woodland and outdoor classroom, receive specialist teaching in music and sport, have access to the school’s varied and enriching activities programme and benefit from the many advantages of being part of The Stowe Group.

“We very much look forward to welcoming our youngest and newest Swanbournians to PreReception in September,” says Mrs Nicoll.

Spaces for the pre-rception class are now being booked. To find out more about admissions at Swanbourne House and to arrange a private tour, visit www.swanbourne.org or email admissions@swanbourne.org

Is a Kitchen re-spray the new way to update and save?

Many of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially now we have had more time at home lately.

But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.

Now local company FX-SPRAY MK is offering a complete professional paint spray service for kitchens.

It is a quick and simple process that leaves your kitchen looking brand new, says FX-SPRAY MK. The company removes and sprays 90 per cent of the kitchen off site, which means that very little work has to be done in your home, in turn meaning minimal disruption. An average kitchen can be completed within a week and home owners continue to use it during the process.

FX-SPRAY MK only use specialist products and having the latest spray equipment means the company delivers that brand new factory finish. A colour matching service to all major paint brands gives a huge choice - you can even go with a two-colour scheme.

“Can any kind of kitchen can be refinished or is respraying just for solid wood?” As long as your kitchen is in reasonable condition, FX-SPRAY MK can refinish it., even carrying out minor repairs and changing handles as part of the process.

FX-SPRAY MK also treats doors, windows and furniture. For more information or a free quote, email jason@fxfinishing.co.uk or visit www.fxfinishing.co.uk

Do I need a Will?

provide effective and proactive guidance when dealing with estates and estate planning.

A significant proportion of people still do not have a Will nor see the benefit of having one.

In England and Wales, if you do not have a valid Will at your death, your estate is deemed Intestate and the distribution of your Estate will be determined by the Rules of Intestacy whereby your spouse or civil partner may have to share your estate with your children.

If you die Intestate leaving a spouse or civil partner, and you have children (issue), your spouse or civil partner will receive your personal effects and whilst any joint assets pass automatically to the surviving holder, for any assets in a deceased sole name, only the first £270,000 of any assets you own will pass to your spouse or civil partner and the rest will be divided equally between the spouse or civil partner and your children.

In addition, Intestacy provisions provide no entitlement for the

consideration of step-children and it may be estranged or unknown family members may benefit instead.

A Will may also deal with specific consideration of particular direction of childrens guardianship, distribution of personal effects and provision for any pets. Direction can be given for funeral instructions or specific wishes you may have.

If you die without a Will there are certain rules that dictate how your money, property and possessions should be allocated, and this may not necessarily follow your wishes. Taking expert advice now will give you complete complete control over what happens after you’ve gone and allow you to specify who will benefit from your legacy. The

You may wish to consider in your Will provision for family members who may have special needs where it may be in their best interests to have their inheritance managed for them under a Trust or Discretionary Trust. A will can also provide Inheritance tax efficiencies which could be lost under an Intestacy.

If you do not have any immediate or close family, you may prefer your estate to pass in your Will to friends or charities rather than it potentially passing to the Treasury solicitor to administer under a Bona Vacantia and pass your estate to the crown.

In summary dying Intestate can cause uncertainty, delay and worry to the family whilst the Rules of Intestacy are applied to your Estate and the correct representative identified and the estate distribution clarified.

If you die without a valid Will, you may find that those who you would wish to benefit, may be lost.

The best way to ensure that your Estate is distributed in accordance with your wishes, your intentions carried out, and to protect your family, yes it is most important that you have a Will.

Introducing a visionary

What makes A World Divided even more special is that the production is home-grown; written by Milton Keynes man Christopher Edwards who has enlisted the best in local actors and musicians to bring this work to life.

On April 17, ticket-holders will take their seats for the world-premiere of the musical, which is being delivered by Skyboat Productions. But let’s be clear, this is no quick delivery. It will have taken more than a decade from idea to curtain up.

‘In a post-apocalyptic world divided by separate tribes, one young hero must embark on a perilous journey to stop war from once again destroying what is left of humanity.’ It might sound like the synopsis for an upcoming Hollywood blockbuster, but it’s actually the teaser for an ‘epic edge-of-your-seat journey’ produced in the new city and coming to MK Theatre this April. Sammy Jones got the lowdown on a brave new production ready to shake up theatre-land...

“The idea came to me around 2011,” Christopher told Pulse, “After the threat of war from Korea, I was kept up for nights with a fear of war, and I decided to write a poem called Ctrl/alt/del after the shortcut on a computer that used to reset the system,” he explained.

And then his mind’s creativity really started whirring!

“Suddenly, characters and songs started presenting themselves in my head, and I put down the initial ideas, but when I went to start the project, life got in the way, and it was put off for many years, although the characters never left me.

“After a time I realised each character in the story represented a different aspect of my mental health, and in lockdown I finally decided to get the ball rolling after hearing about a composer who was an acquaintance who was my age, and had passed away from covid.

“I realised then, life is very short and could end at any time. I decided not to avoid finishing the project anymore!”

So covid was the impetus to move this musical on, but once this beast was prodded in mid-2021, there was no stopping it. Producer

Stephen Bowcott jumped onboard and it has been a constant ever since.

Stephen didn’t need his arm twisting to sign up for the ride, either.

“When I first met Christopher through my 13-year-old daughter, I was immediately struck by his incredible talent as a musician and producer,” he recalled, “He casually mentioned a musical he had written and that it was his life’s dream to take it to the stage, and upon hearing it I was absolutely blown away!

“It is totally different to anything I have heard before – so fresh, so brave, so challenging, so special.

and apocalyptic masterpiece

Stephen added: “Through the ‘fire-andbrimstone’ storyline and rousing musical score, Christopher has created a visionary and apocalyptic masterpiece that promises to achieve not only his dream, but the aspirations of many of his acting cast.”

It’s fair to say that A World Divided has consumed its creator, and all those involved: “...completion of scripts, scores, building the team, the infrastructure, revising, building stages, props, designing costumes, puppets and ideas...It’s a monster of a machine,” Christopher said.

There’s no respite at home either; his partner Lisa is fully engaged with the show, having designed the characters and the costumes, which look amazing.

A World Divided – in numbers

One puppet horse will clippety-clop into the show

There are a whopping 18 songs in A World Divided

Those songs will be performed by a band of 10 who will be on stage the whole time Cast and creatives have spent at least 130 hours in rehearsal

A core cast of 10 members will feature, with an ensemble of 20

“Lisa is truly a major contributing factor to the look of the show, and the characters within it,” Christopher said, “Without her skills it would not be what it has become.”

Christopher is resident in Milton Keynes, and as we mentioned, he has utilised the talent on the doorstep to realise his dream. More than 70 people are involved in the production.

It’s a win-win – a great way to profile rising talents, and there’s no excuse for people not making it to rehearsal on time!

“It has meant the world to me to build this as a friend and family project with all the people I have grown with, or love, having put a piece of themselves into the show. We are one big family who care about one another and have worked very hard together. It was destiny that these people came into this project with me!”

Musicals are big bankers in theatre-land, but this is hardly The Sound of Music or West Side Story.

What sets it apart from other musicals?

“It challenges people’s view of what a musical is,” Christopher promises, “It’s not ‘happy clappy’ all the way through, but it does tick those boxes. It’s edgy, it teaches many lessons and highlights real issues, without shoving them in your face!

“It’s a story that cuts deep and you will be taken on an emotional rollercoaster. A fine balance has been drawn to catch a varied audience range, from the young to the old.

“We have carefully crafted the show, but there are scenes that could prove a touch emotional, and a touch scary – much like the hyenas in The Lion King – so we have rated it as a 12A.”

The MK Theatre performance might be the realisation of a dream, but it is also just the start.

“We aim to take it to the masses, and hope that one day it will take its place in the West End.”

So come on Christopher, give us the plug –why should people reach for the plastic pal and go book their seat?

“Well, aren’t you sick of the same old, same old as much as I am?” he asks, “Don’t get me wrong, I love the oldies, but there is rarely anything new, fresh, edgy or willing to challenge theatre these days because it’s so hard to get the work out there!”

A trip to the theatre is a luxury in these challenging times, but if you do splash the cash, you’ll get an amazing experience in exchange for your pounds.

“If Les Miserables, The Wizard of Oz, and Alice in Wonderland had an orgy, this would be the love child!” Christopher laughs, “It’s the epic storytelling of Les Mis meets the intensity of War of the Worlds with all the fun of Rocky Horror!”

Great Escapes arriving at Formula Fast Indoor Karting

First stage of multi-award winning venue’s expansion plans is complete with the launch of ‘Cipher Escape’.

Formula Fast, located near Stadium MK and featuring a world-class 500m+ indoor kart circuit, have been expanding into a multi-activity facility, reaching an important milestone with the completion of several authentic, fully-immersive WW2-themed Escape Rooms located on the same site.

Cipher Escape have two rooms currently in operation, with a third in the pipeline. The setting of the first room, ‘Hut 17’, pays homage to local Bletchley history as guests race against the clock to break the enemy code before time runs out.

Each room caters for between two and six ‘escapees’, with a recommended minimum age of 12 years old. Rooms are priced between £20-£30 per person, dependant on group size and chosen package. Manager Charlie Butcher is keen to ensure the experience is authentic and respectful when it comes to the historical theme, as well as designing the experience to be exciting and unique.

“We’ve taken a lot of care to source genuine props from the 1940’s to really immerse players in the experience whilst staying true to the history,” explained Charlie.

“Our puzzles are designed to be as varied as possible. We’re known for being innovators with our karting experience, so we also want to put Cipher on the map when it comes to creating a ground- breaking escape room experience for our guests.”

Cipher Escape opened its doors last month, and has so far seen rave reviews, with 5-star ratings on both Google and Tripadvisor. Behind the scenes, the rooms utilise state-ofthe-art technology to run a variety of interactive puzzles, props and effects. Guests are monitored via CCTV and microphones by their game host, who can provide hints and pointers via a real 1940’s phone system.

The next room to be built will be set inside a WW2 submarine, with the final room featuring a bunker theme.

The business behind Cipher Escape, Formula Fast, recently won another award for ‘MK’s Top

Attraction’, and last weekend hosted the famous ‘British Rental Kart Championship’, featuring a first- class racing driver line up from all over the world.

The family-founded business was established by former F1 engineers in 2009 before moving to its current MK location in 2013.

Owner Phil Stanley has big plans to grow the business, with venue improvements and new activities.

“I’m thrilled that we’re finally able to announce the opening of Cipher Escape, which will be a great addition to our activity line-up,” said Phil.

“We’re looking forward to offering more exciting options for our guests as the year progresses.”

They are very probably the most famous of all Milton Keynes' residents, and they have quite the history. Sammy Jones looks at the origins of the new city's Concrete Cows...

A moo-vellous modern story!

While our cud chewing bovines aren't without ridicule from some quarters, they do keep great company. In 2005 they made The Sculpture 100, a look at the most 'distinctive significant, quirky, glorious public sculptures' made for England in the century from 1905 to 2005.

Our Concrete Cows were nestled on a list which also included The Victoria Memorial on the Mall, the Cenotaph in Whitehall, and works by luminaries including Henry Moore. The friesians were the creation of Americanborn Canadian artist Liz Leyh. She had

been given the first Arts Council bursary for an artist-in-residence in a new town, which was co-funded by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation.

Liz worked out of Milton Keynes Museum, which was then known as Stacey Hill Farm, and at the time was utilised for community projects. Working in the area of the Museum which is now the Servants' Room on the tour, Liz created a number of pieces of public art, but it is the cows – created in 1978 - that have been adopted by the city as its mascots.

Liz took inspiration for the work from her friend, the author Jack Trevor Story, who was the author-in-residence at the farm. It meant he had to make frequent visits to the Stacey Hill premises, but he kept getting lost on his travels to the new town, which had no landmarks at that time.

Jack commented that if only there were some cows in the field, he would know which roundabout to turn off at. It's a wonderful story, and one that sowed the seeds of our iconic bovines.

The cows were made from scrap and concrete, newspaper and chicken wire, with

children from local primary schools helping their creation. It took around two years for the cows to reach completion, and while today they are black and white, they are believed to have been brown and white originally, and each had a hidden heart painted on its 'skin'.

When Liz asked for some adult support to help the children with painting the cows, Denis Mason responded. He remembers helping the youngsters with the painting in a field beside the railway bridge at Stacey Bushes.

“My memory is that Liz spent about £35 on materials – scrounging a lot more – one of the essential skills of a Community Arts Worker,” he said.

The cows were launched in the summer of 1978 with an official installation event, and home was initially Bancroft Park.

Right from the start, they seemed to capture the attention of the press, and not just locally; these robust concrete animals made headlines on the front of national newspapers here and in media outlets overseas too.

It's up to you Moo York, Moo York, given an unwanted paint job, on another elpee cover and with fellow stars, Diversity members Ashley Banjo and Perri Kiely Images: Sammy Jones, Living Archive & MK Museum

And, love them or hate them, the cows turned into quite the moovers and shakers. There were six cows in all; three adults, and three calves, however today you can count their number on one hand; one of the calves, which we'll call the Bancroft Baby, was stolen for ransom and never returned. There have been cow-ardly acts of vandalism over the years, too, and if you want to know what's happening in the world, the cows often reflect the issues of the moment – when BSE (mad cow disease) caused panic among carnivores, the cows were daubed in graffiti, and back in 1982, one of the adults was given a new paint job, when someone took it upon themselves to 'dress' him in pyjamas!

In the past when temperatures have dropped to below 'friesian' they've been wrapped in scarves and hats to keep off the winter chill, have received Christmas hats for the festive period, and during the Covid crisis, they led the call for residents to don face coverings - even though they had herd immunity!

The bovines have featured on album and single release covers, on t-shirts, celebratory birthday cakes and Christmas cards, and they've even had books written about them.

The cows also lent their name to Willen Hospice's annual Midnight Moo.

A business was set up to give everyone the opportunity to have their own little concrete

Did you know?

cow, and MK Cows that fit into the palm of your hand are sold and gifted around the world. They are a hit with locals and tourists alike.

The company offers customised cows too; there are little moo's out there celebrating all sorts; from the Olympic achievements of our own Greg Rutherford, to a special edition Shrek cow created to celebrate the arrival of the musical in Milton Keynes in 2015.

I have to admit to owning my own mini cow who travels on holiday with us; to date he has been to Lapland, New York, L.A and Berlin!

But if you go down to Bancroft Park to see the cows today, don't be mistaken in thinking the little herd greeting you are Liz's original creations.

Those in the park are mighty fine replicas, from the hand of the late, and much-loved, Milton Keynes artist Bill Billings. His other exceptional pieces of work in the city include the triceratops dinosaur in Peartree Bridge.

In 2012, those cows were faced with another paint job to mark Halloween – and ended up with skeletal appeal.

That scarily great design was eventually attributed to Bill's son who was concerned that they were going to ruin.

The triceratops had previously undergone the same skeletal treatment to highlight the dying public art in the area.

Speaking at the time, he said: "Ironic, now that the cows are skeletons they look more alive than ever.”

As for Liz's original concrete family?

They went on an extended tour. Two of the animals travelled abroad to appear at the Venice Biennale of Architecture, and the family spent time at Stadium MK which has also taken on the cow theme. The stand for home supporters of the MK Dons is known as The Cowshed, and their retired mascots were cows too – Donny and Mooie.

Eventually the cows moved to Midsummer Place, in the shadow of

the now lost mighty oak tree. But in 2016 the Concrete Cows went home to the Milton Keynes Museum.

At the Milton Keynes Rose – the city's place for celebration, commemoration and contemplation – a pillar has been dedicated to them. September 3 is now officially Concrete Cow Day.

Cucumber sandwiches and cups of tea were served at the original installation of the cows back in 1978, a tradition that has been reinstated at the Museum. Of course, if tea isn't your thing, maybe a little tipple from the MK-based Concrete Cow Brewery will quench thirsts. Their legacy just keeps on growing. The cows are settled at the Museum where they do their best to keep the grass down and they prove udderly charming to visitors.

The Bancroft Baby is still pining for his parents, and they would dearly love to be reunited with their chip off the old block. If you know where the concrete calf is, or if he is languishing in your back garden, please contact us at Pulse. We would love a happy ending. No questions asked.

The great outdoors gives learning a whole new dimension

Classrooms extend into the natural environment that abounds within the expansive grounds at Akeley Wood School, set in the beautiful North Buckinghamshire countryside. And outdoor learning is an important part of the school curriculum until Year 9, longer than many other schools.

Forest School learning sessions are part of the week at the lovely Wicken Park campus, home to the Junior School when tree climbing, a mud kitchen, bug-hunting and caring for guinea pigs and chickens are all part of the experience. The Forest School concept means that activities are child-led, which enables pupils to use their imagination, develop teamwork and problem-solving skills and enjoy learning in the fresh air.

“One of the first things I noticed when we started Forest School eight years ago was how worried pupils were about getting dirty,” says Forest School lead Teresa Sandiford. “As they gain confidence from the activities and being outdoors, none of this fazes them. The social, physical and emotional aspects of Forest School makes them more confident, grow their self-esteem and empathy to care for others and their surroundings.”

The Outdoor Learning area at nearby Akeley Wood Senior School sits at the edge of established woodland. Outdoor learning lead Kyle Sumner oversees activity on the low ropes course - a physical challenge but great for teamwork development, he says. There is a firepit; students make dens and cord out of nettles they have foraged in the woods. Axe-throwing relieves stress and improves coordination. Akeley Wood students are in the woods in all weathers – except high winds. Each keeps a set of waterproofs at school because, says Kyle, outdoor learning can be muddy but the youngsters relish the opportunity to be outside. Kyle has also created a special outdoor classroom where students learn skills such as tree identification.

“Young people spend so much time indoors and need to learn these ‘soft skills’ that we keep hearing they no longer possess,” said Kyle. “The pupils learn about taking calculated risks outdoors but in a safe environment.

“I’m not going to allow them to get hurt but here they can build resilience and confidence and learn about teamwork.”

An opportunity to teach respect for fellow humans and each other

The Knife Angel may have left Milton Keynes but its legacy has begun with a permanent monument designed by young people in the city and first put on public display at MK Gallery.

It stood, 20 feet tall, outside

Now members of MK Gallery’s Street Arts programme have created a new sculpture to be part legacy of the Knife Angel’s Month of Action that ended in Milton Keynes in early January. The group is using the 4,500 anti-violence pledges that visitors left at the Knife Angel to create a permanent 3D monument for Milton Keynes that is on show at MK Gallery until March 8. Established in 2020, Street Arts runs termly for young people from the age of 11 to 15. It is supported by MK Together Partnership, MK Gallery and Paramount Parkour Academy to deliver workshops and activities for young people at risk of knife crime. The programme combines Parkour training – the art of freerunning through a town, using skilful movements to jump over walls and other objects – and artist workshops. Members of the Street Arts team have enjoyed creative sessions including spray painting, film making, T-shirt printing and photography.

Fuschia’s bubble has finally burst! Fashion is moving on to (slightly) paler things - like candyfloss-coloured cardis, bubble gum denim, and accessories that look like sweets.

Yes, Spring-Summer’s It pinks have arrived on rails, inspired by the sugary ensembles seen at Victoria Beckham, Acne and Nensi Dojaka, where all from pastel dresses to punchy pink two-pieces were wrapped around model bodies.

To wear the look, pick and mix your pinks with spearmint greens, neutral creams, or chocolate-y browns – else go for a complete saturation of saccharine by wearing pink top-

to-toe. For a double-helping of ‘on-trend,’ choose a baby pink blazer-trouser combo; softshade suitwear’s a key look for Spring, thanks to the runways at Stella McCartney, Rejina Pyo and Molly Goddard. Just see Oliver Bonas and Matalan for some brilliant highstreet options.

But do make sure to scan your wardrobe at home first, or scoop up the pretty pink accessories hiding in your local charity shop. A statement bag or pair of earrings that hardly anyone else has can be the cherry on top of any outfit. And, if the item’s pre-loved or one of your past, forgotten purchases? Sweet! You’ve saved yourself some pennies, and the planet from even more fashion waste.

Modern Heritage

It could seem to be a juxtaposition to have the words “modern” and “heritage” used to describe one type of style. But the reality is that most modern designs we see today are influenced at least in part by heritage designs. The term “heritage” can be defined as denoting a traditional style or product regarded as emblematic of fine craftsmanship; or styles and crafts that have a timeless appeal, a respect for the past which sits comfortably alongside our modern-day living. A successful use of modern heritage in interior design is one that effortlessly combines traditional features and aesthetics with modern art, patterns, textures and appliances.

Living in a modern world does not mean we need to abandon the traditional methods of design, leave behind the crafts of the past or constantly forge forwards to create a new modern aesthetic. We see this also in fashion, where modern collections are often inspired by those that went before. Consider the classic Chanel suit, Louboutin black stiletto, or the Madeleine Vionnet bias-cut dress –each rarely changed since their conception, sometimes updated to roll with the times, but always a stalwart, high fashion design piece.

For British interior design, Morris & Co is one of these reliable and consistent brands that transcends time periods. While many of the designs they still print today are relatively unchanged since their conception in the late 19th Century, seasonally updated collections continue to offer new colourways and contemporary iterations of these traditional designs. Most of the designs are still printed in the traditional way, with the use of wooden blocks rather than the more modern process of using rollers to churn out mass-produced fabrics and wallpapers quickly and efficiently. It is this continued appreciation of the traditional craft of wood block, hand finished printing (while always being aware of the flux in design styles) that gives this brand true modern heritage status. You can find Morris & Co wallpapers and fabrics sitting as comfortably in a stately home as in a modern penthouse apartment. The conviction is in the overall design style; knowing how to blend colour palettes, textures and furniture to create a harmonious, overall vision.

Another obvious modern heritage piece regularly found in kitchens and utility rooms is the Belfast sink. A favourite piece amongst many households since the 1700s, this design classic was originally designed (unsurprisingly) in Belfast, but quickly became popular due to its robust nature and deep bowl, allowing for the washing of large items often found in the homes of the landed gentry. These sinks are said to have evolved from a Butler’s sink, used by house staff to wash clothes and big pots, with the Belfast sink introducing the overflow weir to avoid spillages. Many kitchen brands now offer some variation of the Belfast sink with different sizes, finishes and composition available, but the key look remains the same - a large protruding basin and a deep bowl, forming the centre point of kitchen work tops and islands.

There is no real time limit on the term “heritage”. Mid-century furniture, Victorian floor tiles, art deco shapes, Edwardian light fittings, 1970s patterns - all of these could be considered heritage. Curating a successful modern heritage style means working with, not against, your traditional choices. Blend antique pieces with a contemporary colour palette, reupholster a classic sofa such as a wingback chair or chesterfield sofa in a bold new pattern or colour to create a modern take on a classic design. Use a panelled wall to show off your favourite modern art pieces; install herringbone or parquet flooring as the base of an otherwise contemporary room; select velvet, wool or plaid fabrics to add some classic texture. Farrow & Ball, Sanderson, Morris & Co, Cole and Son, Lewis and Wood, Ercol and Parker Knoll are some great brands to start looking into for that modern heritage style.

When designing with heritage in mind, you needn’t replicate a room from a specific time period like for like. Rather than making a room identical to a historic museum set, blending heritage styles with contemporary aesthetics or ways of living will help give a beautifully curated and relaxed modern heritage style. A great place to start is by being sympathetic to the age of the house you are living in. Make the most of original features such as coving, ceiling roses or panelling, or reintroduce original-looking floor tiles where they may have been lost. If your home was built more recently and lacks such features, you can still introduce modern heritage into your home. Try to keep to one aesthetic and let it flow throughout the rooms. Think of the colour palette that appeals from a certain era, perhaps consider adding wall panelling, or replacing or covering the existing flooring. Finishing touches like light fittings, artwork and ornaments can also help exaggerate or soften how much you want the look to be modern or heritage.

There is no rule on how much of a room should be from a traditional or a contemporary influence. The best way to play with this style is to do your research, find brands that give you what you want, make the most of the existing pieces you already own or hunt through vintage and antique shops to find new pieces that really stand out. Modern heritage is a style that’s accessible to everyone, no matter what the age of your house or how big or small your budget!

4 interior trends for 2023

Always looking to provide you with exciting new ideas, we’ve had a look through some of the interior design trends for 2023 to bring you our favourites, those ideas which will bring you fashion forward while ensuring you keep your own sense of style.

Creating space for something special - the centrepiece

Traditional room layouts have often meant there is no room for surprise - the sofa in front of the fireplace, the dining table central to the room. One way to present our individuality is through statement pieces.

Here at the Rose Gallery, we’ve had increasing interest in Street Art and Urban Art in the last few years, these are pieces which really do make a statement and demand attention. Among these artworks you’ll find visually surprising pieces including art with neon elements, mixed media and unusually shaped works.

Leaving the straight and narrow, embracing the curve

A continuing trend in both furniture and architecture has been curves - with furniture we’re seeing curved back sofas, barrel chairs and round cushions, in architecture arched openings and doorways.

For those looking to bring curves into their home, a circular artwork creates a wonderful change in perspective. Embracing this trend, we have a number of round pieces created by some of our favourite artists including Doug Hyde and Hayley Goodhead.

Inspired by nature - elements of design

Natural elements have inspired us for… well, forever really. And this focus on the natural world has inspired us to bring the outside in,

filling our spaces with plants, natural materials and textures.

As an interior design trend which has captured our hearts, this natural inspiration isn’t going anywhere with designers expecting us to keep searching out natural materials such as wood and stone, rattan and wicker. The presence of plant life and colours of nature are also important to creating the spaces we want to spend more time in.

Art can not only bring the outdoors into our homes through landscapes and seascapes, but transport us to our favourite places.

Finding warmth and calm with neutrals

If the previous trends have been about making statements and capturing the extraordinary, this final trend is about creating warmth and calm with sophisticated neutrals. We’re not looking to create bland spaces, instead using sable, mushroom, warm blues, greens and peaches, to create an atmosphere of peace.

2023 trends, creating spaces for you

Choosing artwork for your home or space might be influenced by any number of things. If you’re looking to stay ahead of the trends for next year, there are certainly a number of things you can consider.

Whether you’d normally look at bright, statement pieces, round works, those inspired by the natural world or neutral colours, these are all things you can explore to discover what moves you.

DIGGING DEEP

Think ahead for summer colour

After what seems like an eternity, spring is just a few sleeps away, and the garden is already teasing us with glimpses of what is to come.

The warmer days and lighter evenings mean that there is more time to get gardening jobs in hand – which is just as well as there is plenty to do!

Have you tidied the garden from the winterwoes? Have you cut back those winter shrubs?

And you’ll need to get busy with the bulbs – now is the time to sort summer-flowering examples.

If you want to go all dramatic, lilies and gladioli are obvious tall examples.

Fragrance counts too, and aside from the aforementioned, freesias are truly scentsational and come in a variety of colours. If planting now, start them off in a greenhouse.

Begonias and crocosmia will also play a part in turning a garden into a triumph.

Choosing the flowers that you want to bloom in your outside space is all part of the fun, but don’t put it off for too much longer. Think about what you are planting where, and get busy with the task now, for a summer spectacular.

Roses are a garden staple for many, and they are the quintessential English flower, but don’t leave them to their own devices for much longer. Prune them now to improve their health and lifespan.

Top Tip

Five a day is fine, eight a day is great! Eating a variety of fruit and vegetables is key to good health, and they never taste better than when they are home-grown, do they?

As far as fruits are concerned, now is the time to plant up strawberries and if you are partial to rhubarb, cover up your crowns using old containers - it encourages long stalks.

As for veggies? Cabbage, cauliflower, carrot, lettuce, parsley, brussels sprout, broad beans and beetroot can all be sown outdoors under cloches, and cucumber and aubergine will be fine in a heated greenhouse. Don’t have one? A sunny windowsill will work. Get busy now and tasty times will follow.

That doesn’t mean getting busy with the secateurs in a scene reminiscent of Edward Scissorhands – there is much more to it than that, and there are various rules for the various roses – what is good for a rambling rose won’t work for a miniature, for example.

Referring to the relevant labels (if you still have them) will prevent error.

If you are hoping to welcome wildflowers into your garden, our pollinators will love you for it, and you can now sow native wildflower seeds in trays ready to move outdoors later. Now is also the time to get reacquainted with Maurice the Mower! The general advice is to mow every week or two for the six month period from March – it will keep your lawn trim and tidy and help to get rid of weeds.

A word of warning for anyone taking on the lawn challenge for the first time in 2023 though; mowing wet or frosty grass will create problems. If you need to wait a while, do.

What should you consider when buying new energy efficient windows and doors?

Anyone who is considering replacing doors or windows in their homes may feel overwhelmed by the process and the various, options, advice and claims made by different companies.

So, what should you look out for when researching? How do you know that the claims which are being made are true, and what are the key things to look out for? Knowing the answers to questions can make a real difference in making the right decision for such a large investment. As the best product, fitted in the right way can save consumers hundreds every year in energy bills – but getting it wrong can be very costly.

Here are some of the key things to check:

Does the company have independent accreditations and can they prove it?

It is always best to check the company’s independent accreditations. For example, the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) are the leading consumer accreditation for energy efficiency testing, so make sure they are part of the scheme.

The Police-Approved Secured by Design is critical for security. Made in Great Britain for UK-based approved manufacturing, and Which? for complete peace of mind, as they validate company’s finances every year. It’s also worth checking that the company is fully verified on each site by checking online.

Has the company won any national awards? Look out for national awards like the G-Awards, which rewards excellence in the glass and glazing industry. These are independent awards where companies go through rigorous testing for manufacturing and installation. Being a winner or finalist demonstrates that a company is at the top of their game and worth investing in.

Do they manufacture their own products as well as install them?

It is incredibly beneficial for the consumer if the company both manufactures and installs their products. This ensures that there is only one company responsible for the whole process. So should anything go wrong the responsibility lies with one party, and the blame cannot be passed - which unfortunately happens all too often in the glazing industry.

Does the company employ its own installers?

If the answer is ‘no’ and the company relies

on sub-contractors, who will likely be paid per frame, then look for alternatives. A company which employs its own team of installers will work on getting it right first time, rather cutting corners but trying to install as quickly as possible.

Make sure you view the products before making a decision

For most companies, a design consultant may visit your home. It’s vitally important you view the products before purchasing such a large investment. Having a detailed demonstration of the product before you buy will allow you to understand what you are purchasing and all the features and benefits. It’s even better if the company has a showroom, as it’s a great way of seeing more variety, comparing different styles, options and colours so you make the right decision to suit your property.

Always check how long the company has been trading.

There are companies who have a habit of closing and opening again, and again, so it makes sense to use one with a trusted reputation built up over decades of uninterrupted trading. Check online to see how long a company has been trading for and ask for testimonials from previous clients.

What guarantees and what finance options do they offer?

A well-established company will offer an unconditional 10-year guarantee, so check that everything is covered within it. Also check

to see if they offer a range of finance options including interest free, or low deposits up to ten years. The most secure companies will be regulated by the FCA (financial conduct authority) and will able to offer the maximum Home Improvement loan value of £50,000 – so it’s good to check, as this alone also demonstrates their financial stability.

Where do you start?

Buying windows can be a bit of a mine field, that’s why you should always do your research and ask an expert. Award-winning T&K Home Improvements have had 44 years in the industry manufacturing and installing Windows, Doors and Living Spaces for over 60,000 satisfied customers. Their products are manufactured on site and their team of experts are available to give free advice.

City Council to be carbon neutral by 2030

Milton Keynes City Council has long shared its ambition of becoming the greenest city in the world, and it looks like we’re on track to get there.

The City Council is currently implementing various green initiatives including building energy efficient council homes, installing LED street lighting, and generating renewable energy through a solar farm.

These efforts, coupled with future strategies, means that we’re on the way to reach carbon neutrality by 2030. We have cut our own carbon emissions by tens of thousands of tonnes in the last four years, and this is set to improve even more.

Some key eco-conscious projects as part of this work include:

LED Street Lighting – Since 2014, the City Council has upgraded almost 40,000 streetlights, leading to a total saving of 29.2 million kWh of electricity and over 38,000 total tonnes of carbon! We will upgrade the remaining lights by Spring 2024.

Green Homes – We’re planning to deliver energy efficiency measures to more than 1,900 council homes as part of our housing and maintenance programme.

Solar Farm – We’re currently exploring renewable energy generation options, which could include a large-scale solar farm in the city.

We’re committed to making sure that every person and business in Milton Keynes can play a part in tackling the climate crisis. Whether it be using public transport more often, or reducing waste, there are lots of small steps you can take to help us become a world-leading sustainable city.

Throughout the cost-of-living crisis, people are also being helped with cutting their energy usage and costs. Last year, we funded a ‘Warmth and Wellbeing’ helpline which hundreds of people have called since it launched in November. Callers have received advice by an expert team on debt and bills, saving energy, and how to apply for grants to make a home better insulated and more energy efficient.

If you’d like some advice, you can call freephone 0800 107 0044 to speak to someone from the National Energy Foundation’s Better Housing Better Health team, who will assess your situation and suggest some help.

Step on it for Craufurd tickets

The annual Bloodstock Festival will see fans of the hard and heavy flock to Catton Park in Derbyshire this August. This year’s festival billing is topped by Killswitch Engage and Megadeth, with MK acts CasketFeeder and Tuskar also figuring across the weekend.

New talents are being asked to show their ‘metal’ again, by taking part in the Metal 2 The Masses competition in the hope of bagging a slot on the New Blood stage.

Heats are being held countrywide, including here in Milton Keynes at The Craufurd Arms Pop along on March 2, 9, 16 and 23 to watch the heats. Semi-finals will follow in April. More about those next month.

Back to the immediate though, and you can get connected with the Stereo MCs (March 4), but you’ll need to be quick – tickets are flying out to see the band who decades ago went from an essential live proposition to Brit Award winners.

Today, they are still in play and every bit as essential. Stereo MCs are the party band you want to see at a festival. In the confines of the Craufurd? This show will be off the scale!

Naked Next Door have been quiet for a wee while, but are promising exciting news imminently. The MK indie-rock quartet have already stuck their toes into the live side in 2023, with a couple of shows in Bristol and

Manchester, but their Craufurd date (March 10) is the first of the year on home turf.

Support will come from Crystal Tides and Clearcut

After nearly 45 years of punking it up, Cockney Rejects have decided that 2023 is the last year they will be a touring band: “We will still be around on the festival circuit,” they promised, but there will be no more tours.

That’s the bad news for fans, but the good news is that the East End mob will be visiting the Wolverton hub for one more gig (March 11). If you call yourself a fan, you can’t afford to miss this.

Erotic Secrets of Pompeii deliver weird rock for strange times, and describe themselves as an ‘apocalyptic lounge act’.

The Bristolians are also part of the Marshall Live Agency roster and stop the tour bus here on March 15 as part of their Trash Jugular tour.

“We’ve been hitting the rehearsal rooms hard and can’t wait to get back on the road to showcase the Trash Jugular EP in all its greasy glory,” singer Thomas Hawtin told us, “Our set is fully-loaded with songs that teeter on the brink of madness and froth at the mouth with hooks galore!

“Expect a vibrant, self-exorcism of a performance; loud angular guitars; weird, wired songs you can ecstatically dance to and a stage covered in sweat. Our music comes from a world that is arch and playful, dark and twisted, and always inclusive.”

The Gallagher brothers mightn’t have agreed to a reunion, but there’s always a winner – and Noasis have been plugging the gap left by Liam and Noel admirably.

This isn’t a karaoke session of sorts, indeed the band says they are ‘Oasis from a parallel universe’.

Noasis are masters at their craft and they’ve had plenty of practice; they formed way back in 2006. So far, they’ve played more than 800 shows.

Their MK performances are legendary, and in 2022 they sold out four dates at the venue. It’s the hot ticket, but you’ve got twice the chance to get involved when the band enjoys a two-night stay (March 17 & 18).

These shows will sell-out though, so don’t expect to simply roll with it – get on it.

Indian folk metallers Bloodywood (March 25) seamlessly fuse Indian folk instruments with metal, giving audiences the chance to listen to ‘the percussive power of the Dhol with the melancholic Flute and other uncommon yet distinctively characteristic sounds from India.’ Catch more of their story in the documentary, Raj Against the Machine

Brisbane boys Dune Rats issued their fourth elpee, Real Rare Whale last year, and the trio are out on a massive international rampage tour which stops off at the Craufurd on March 29. Support comes from Beddy Rays

Black metal titans The Infernal Sea (March 30) will be joined by our own Casket Feeder and Aklash when they take the stage as part of their Tour of Reckoning, and a day later (March 31) Weezer fans will be donning the specs ready to enjoy three mammoth sets; George Gadd & the Aftermath will deliver the Blue album, Weird Elements will present Pinkerton and Beans McQueens will give you ‘all the other Weezer hits you want to hear!’

Post-punks and ‘bassquakes’

Milton Keynes’ electronica postpunks Sir-Vere will release their ‘most confident and fully realised statement’ so far on March 17, with the new album, Lovescope Breaks, acid and electro, indie, metal and punk all find a home in their output, and this release sees long term frontman Craig Hammond in play with Ian McEwan, whose addition has given even more bang to their boom.

Meantime, studio chief Gary Morland and Steve Vega ‘trade raw guitar licks and funk-laden basslines with flailing acid squelches and sublevel bassquakes.’

They’ve only just played a hometown gig at The Craufurd Arms to launch the new release, but with a year of touring planned in support of Lovescope in 2023, Sir-Vere will hopefully be back in these parts before too long.

> Visit sir-vere.com to get your hands on the new opus, and to keep up to speed with all the latest news. You’ll also find them on Bandcamp. Vinyl junkies who act fast will be able to get their mitts on a tasty limited edition gatefold version.

Della Nova, a London-based trio (but featuring two former new city dwellers in guitarist Alex Bowmer and drummer Karl Hall), issued their debut single, Wachasay, a couple of weeks back.

The band, completed by bassist Joe Chauncy, say they are ‘for fans of Alice in Chains, QOTSA and Audioslave, ‘ and what we’ve heard is certainly an accomplished, full bodied sound. Their self-titled debut elpee is in the bag and has another local connection - it was mastered by Tesseract’s Acle Kahney.

Charged up times for Towcester!

We love it when young artists pull together their talents and start making a scene instead of sitting back and expecting it all to come to them, and Headcharge is a great example of things being done the right way.

Headcharge is a collective of bands from Northampton and Milton Keynes who have come together to work on a new live music opportunity for Towcester, which launches at The Mill Brewery on March 4.

Alfie Glass and Lewis Beahan are bringing this debut event to you, which will feature fuzzy garage rockers Mothman, the Man, ‘famptonbased gritty punk-grungers Something To Write Home About, and MK psychedelics Lurch

Fellow new city players Serma will top the bill in The Malt Room.

A food van will cater for hunger pangs, home

brewed beers will feature, and snapper Joe Westley will be selling his prints.

Tickets are a fiver on the door, and ages 16+ are welcome – you will be ID checked.

“There are a lot of young people in Towcester, but we don’t have a reason to come out,” Alfie told Pulse, “We want to give the people a reason to come out and we’re looking forward to exciting times as we deliver Towcester’s first ever real music venue with bands who have big dreams!

“We want to make this the social hotspot for the town – let’s work together and make this a place of our own,” Alfie encouraged.

> This isn’t just about holding a gig, but contributing to the creative community. If you can help and want to get involved, drop an email to headchargeclub@gmail.com

KC ‘kills it’ on new EP

After a manic post-covid time spent on the road with Alfie Templeman, you might think that bassist Cam Owden would relish putting his feet up for a while. But you couldn’t be more wrong.

“I would’ve toured until the sun burns out,” Cam told Pulse Music, “But the sheer weight that Alfie was dealing with everyday necessitates time off, he works so incredibly hard off stage that it was only right for him to take a break.”

All of which means Cam has time to dedicate to his solo endeavours as KC Blackwater; the How To Kill A Man EP will be issued on March 31. It’s a delicious, uncompromising, self-confident belter.

“I want it to be slightly uncomfortable but somewhat satisfying at the same time,” he said, “Like the bad guy meeting a grizzly doom, or the satisfying sunburn itch, I want this project to ride the line between uncomfortable enough to make you think, but bearable enough to listen to.

“With the break from touring, I wanted to take the chance to establish KC as being something more than a project. What that is, I’m yet to figure out. For now, it’s good music to listen to loudly.

“I’m just a guy making punk music in my room and I want to make the best music possible from that.”

Cam has seen first hand the kerfuffle that accompanies big success, and this solo outlet is a chance to cut back to basics, and get with the DIY, which he is doing fabulously.

The tracklisting

Kids!

Having friends in high places seems to get you anywhere, and that certainly isn’t a new thing. I wanted to take this idea to the hyperbolic limit, where kids and their innocence are allowed to be exploited by the rich and those of high social standing, just because they’re friends with or have dirt on someone.

I think the recent cases of Epstein and the far reaching ramifications and list of names involved (that seem to not have been acted on with appropriate vigour) led me to lines like, ‘It makes a lot of sense to see predators break in when the leaders of the people have them paying for their rent.’

The Body

“I want to show people that you don’t have to resort to industry giants, that you can still do things yourself and take ownership of what you’ve made. I haven’t been around the local scene in a while due to touring, but it seems healthy and self-sufficient right now,” says the new city dweller, “That’s really inspiring to me. Making my own cassettes, screen printing my shirts with a local vintage store and releasing everything myself means that, just like the music itself, everything that people order is 100% me, made by hand and delivered from my room.”

Cam won’t rule out working with labels in the future, but he will be ‘incredibly picky’ to retain as much control as possible.

“Fast fashion, fast music and fast friends are all hollow and meaningless and if you rely on any of these things you’re robbing yourself and perpetuating the machine that cares nothing for you, for fans or for artists.”

The EP is a sensation, but this is music surely meant to be played live?

“It’s music made to be heard in a sweaty room,” he agrees, “But I want it to be right. I have to find the right band, teach them everything and practice it to the floor. I only want people to see the best of KC, and I am hoping that when I do take it live that I can blow the roof off of anywhere we play.”

Right now though, Cam will be spending his time crafting away in the locality.

“I still live in sunny Milton Keynes and I can’t see that changing any time soon,” he says, “I love this place and despite touring five continents last year, I’m yet to find a place that makes me not want to come home.”

Artists’ bodies talk for as long as the company wants them to, even if it’s a puppet corpse. The other side of the track speaks to how modern fanbases are sold seemingly infinite access to artists through parasocial relationships and the damage that does.

Phineas Gage’s 5 o’Clock Shave

This expresses the feeling of brain rot that one can get from staring into the many voids available to us these days. The deterioration of the character in this song reflects the sheer exhaustion I feel from hearing a million voices and opinions I was never meant to hear on a daily basis...

How to Kill a Man

This track was the lynchpin of the record. The finishing touch that forever seemed unfinished. I couldn’t release this record without it, yet I never found the words to express what I wanted to say.

Film Reviews

FILM OF THE MONTH - Star Rating: 4.5/5

How much you consider Tár to be the tragic downfall of artistic genius depends on how much you value that genius regardless of the personality behind it. In this film’s case, the downfall is very much deserved but no more pleasant for it. The film’s power is in how compellingly messy the fall is, reflecting society’s own uncomfortable tolerance of “flawed” genius.

Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) is one of the greatest composers and conductors to ever grace an orchestra. Conducting the Berlin Philharmonic to global fame, she’s quietly but utterly ruthless to those around her, openly humiliating students who disagree with her and dispensing with people who no longer best serve her purposes. At its worst, this extends to assistants and young musical hopefuls with whom it’s alleged she’s used to have inappropriate relationships.

M3GAN

Star Rating: 3.5/5

Virtual friends become too real for comfort in this sci-fi shocker that’s more satire of succumbing to endless screen time than straightforward horror. M3GAN (Model Three Generative Android) is a doll-like robot with “Uncanny Valley” facial movements and an even creepier attachment to Cady, the orphaned girl she was made to befriend. As much as M3GAN becomes self-aware during the film, the film itself is fully aware of how ridiculous it gets as M3GAN turns murderous to “protect” her best friend. It’s full of morbid gags about the numbing effects of tech on human interactions, especially those aimed at children. The scary part is that M3GAN’s world is only one step removed from our reality. ✪

TÁR CODA

Star Rating: 3/5

Hopefully this year’s Best Picture Oscar winner is better and more memorable than CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), which won last year. Only on Apple TV+, this story of a hearing high schooler juggling her hopes of becoming a singer with supporting her deaf family’s fishing business has the unique angle of featuring how a deaf family navigates a mostly hearing world. Otherwise, its story beats, character dynamics and ultimate destination remain deeply predictable. It’s never unpleasant and it’s a well-acted, aspirational drama while failing to stand out against more distinctive coming of age films like Lady Bird ✪

Tár’s very gradual start and very dubious protagonist deserve your patience as the film solidly establishes Lydia’s character, how and why she asserts herself so firmly, or more precisely how and why she’s allowed to. Lauded from all sides and without anyone to question her genius, she wields her power and hides her misdeeds (while also being haunted by them in several genuinely spooky scenes) until she becomes more liability than asset and the symphony quickly falls apart.

Cate Blanchett was director Todd Field’s only choice to play Lydia and watching the great actress’s commanding presence carry such self-assurance and yet vulnerability, it’s very easy to see why. Tár is cathartic and disturbing in equal measure, hard to love like its protagonist but even harder to ignore the notes it masterfully plays.

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER

Star Rating: 2.5/5

The Way of Water is both very long and still undercooked, especially since James Cameron’s sequel arrives thirteen years after his first Avatar film. Even compared to the original’s less than stellar storytelling, this one somehow seems even simpler and missing some of its predecessor’s epic quality. The evil humans are back, so Jake and Neytiri take their family to safety with the Na’vi tribes living by Pandora’s seas. This provides lots of opportunities to show off incredibly convincing underwater alien worlds and face off against the humans hunting fantasy whales. With this much eye candy and some relatable family dynamics, it’s not a slog, but as you listen to more rote dialogue you’ll wonder what could have been achieved with these wondrous filmmaking tools. ✪

EMANCIPATION

Star Rating: 2.5/5

Will Smith’s Oscars slap continues to overshadow the star’s career and Emancipation, though well-made and mostly worthy, isn’t impressive enough to change that. Streaming on Apple TV+, Smith plays a Southern slave fleeing his oppressors in the American Civil War after Lincoln declares the slaves freed. He’s certainly decent in a grim and gritty pursuit drama that’s presented almost completely drained of colour and with plenty of diverting, gruelling fights to survive the Confederate South. It which briefly turns war film near the end. However, he’s unremarkable and arguably conspicuous compared to the cast around him when a less well-known actor might have been more fitting. ✪

Shows about dodgy dentists, and traumatised hair, and others that will have you dancing the aisles. And there’s comedy too. Here’s a look at what’s on the theatre menu this March, with Pulse’s Sammy Jones...

A flyaway success with body, volume and highlights

Alittle reminder that performances of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory continue through to March 5 at MK Theatre.

Willy Wonka is played by West End favourite Gareth Snook in the choc-tastic treat that won’t go straight to the hips!

There are lots of brief stays at the theatre this month too, some of which are already sold out, including an evening in the company of retiring astronaut Tim Peake, and The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight

Stewart Lee (March 8 & 9) has spent the last 10 years bringing ground-breaking high concept shows involving overarched interlinked narratives, and massive sets and props to the fore.

Now he’s stripping back the excess and venturing out into the spotlight with just a microphone for company. Cleverly, he’s calling this new road trawl Basic Lee

If you love a bit of country, you can ill afford to miss A Country Night in Nashville (March 11), which will take you to the scene of a buzzing honky-tonk in downtown Nashville with all the associated energy that you would expect from the home of the genre.

Bringing songs like Ring of Fire, 9-5 and The Gambler to life will be down to Dominic Halpin and the Hurricanes, and they visit the Keynes direct from The Royal Albert Hall. More country cool than you can squeeze into a shop of cowboy boots!

On March 14, Tony Blackburn arrives with the Sounds of the 60s Live – an evening of top tunes from the sensational decade performed by the Sounds Of The 60s All Star Band & Singer, with the Radio 2 legend overseeing proceedings.

Award-winning Dada Masilo took the stage in 2019 with a stunning re-imagining of Giselle.

Four years on and Masilo has reassembled her company of marvellous movers for the UK premiere of The Sacrifice

This piece has been inspired by Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, bringing together the European heritage of the music with rhythmic and expressive movement of ‘Tswana’,’ which is the traditional dance of Botswana.

The exhilarating performance does feature partial nudity. Shouldn’t be an issue, but just so that you are aware. The Sacrifice is another two-nighter – view on March 17 or 18.

Luther Vandross passed away in 2005, but he left behind a body of work that was – to quote one of his song titles – So Amazing Other big hits included Never Too Much, Give Me The Reason, Love The One You’re With, I Really Didn’t Mean It and Endless Love

The man known as The Velvet Voice sold more than 40 million albums and this show (March 21) will remember that success with Harry Cambridge and his 10-piece band cutting loose the tracks.

Last up at MK Theatre in March, a stage delivery of Demon Dentist, by David Walliams.

Children are leaving their teeth for the tooth fairy, but when they wake up, there are odd things under the pillows.

Alfie and Gabz are out to resolve the mystery, but what will they discover when they come face to face with the demon dentist himself?!

The Demon Dentist runs from March 23-26 with two performances daily. Times vary –check the website.

A night with Pete Firman is enchanting and ticket-holders are in for a jaw-dropping time when the man called ‘the new poster boy for British comedy magic’ returns to The Stables with his current show, Bag of Tricks (March 3).

Still with The Stables, Theatre of Widdershins deliver Rapunzel & The Tower of Doom (March 12), which is suitable for those aged four years and up.

The folks at Widdershins have taken this traditional tale right back to its roots, teased out the tangles and styled it into a beautifully coiffed hair piece.

And lastly for this month, a nudge to encourage you to pop to the Wavendon venue to see Patrick Monahan (March 18) and listen to his stand up observations on living in modern life. It takes a special kind of talent to make these times funny. He must be great, and the reviews for Classy say as much.

If only ‘everything’ was black and white

The latest crossover from Honda is their reincarnation of the HR-V. This time it’s back as a self-charging hybrid, boasting improved MPG without the hassle of having to plug in.

Prices currently start at £29,410 in entry-level ‘Elegance’ trim and rise to £34,850 for rangetopping ‘Advance Style’.

Colour really does make a difference with the HR-V; take our dowdy retirement red example here. Urgh. But in black or white, it looks the business. Unfortunately, those tones will set you back an extra £650, as the standard nocost colour is ‘Sand Khaki Pearl’ – aka beige.

That hidden rear door does wonders for the HR-V, making it look almost like a coupe. And that skinny rear C pillar is also a welcome change from most modern crossovers. While the rear looks wide thanks to a central light bar running the whole width of the Honda.

So the HR-V is an e:HEV, which means you can drive on electric power alone up to 40 mph before the 1.5-litre petrol engine kicks in. CVT automatic gearboxes are the easiest way to mesh electric motors and petrol engines, and that’s no different in the HR-V. You get 130 BHP in total from the two motors and the small battery pack that sits beneath the rear seats. Energy is recovered via braking to charge the battery. The engine doesn’t charge it directly but can give some of its power to the motors to drive the front wheels in a hybrid drive mode.

Around town is where the HR-V is best suited. It’s easy to drive and keeps pretty hushed as long as you don’t mash the throttle too hard to get away from a roundabout. The HR-V switches drive modes as it sees fit to get the best MPG.

Over 200 odd miles of faster A road and country driving, I saw 49 MPG, just a smidge below the official figure of 52.3. However, give the HR-V a more balanced life of around-town miles, and that should be easily beatable.

FACTS AT A GLANCE

Top Speed: 106 MPH

Performance: 0-60 in 10.4 secs

Power: 129 BHP

Economy: 52.3 MPG (claimed)

0-60 is 10.4 seconds, which is rather slow, but the 253 Nm of torque makes it feel a bit punchier off the mark than those figures tell. Hopping inside and the HR-V is all the usual Honda goodness. Everything feels nicely made, all the touchpoints are of decent quality, and nothing feels overly cheap.

Large windows give a good view all around; even the smaller-than-average rear window isn’t an issue, thanks to the aforementioned thin rear pillars. Front and rear parking sensors are also standard.

The infotainment screen is 9” and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; there’s also a USB charging socket just by the gear lever.

In the rear, legroom is excellent for a car of this size, but headroom is a little on the squashed side thanks to that low roofline, but it should only trouble the tallest of adults. There are also two USB chargers in the back.

Boot space measures 319 litres, which is a little tight as a Nissan Juke can hold more. A flat boot floor is split to allow you to stow even more underneath, but Honda’s ‘Magic Seats’ fold into the floor, making the HR-V a cavernous 1,289-litre load lugger.

As a city-loving runabout for short commutes, the HR-V is ideal. Offering diesel levels of MPG without the nasties. It would also make a great stepping stone from an internal combustion engine vehicle to something fully electric.

All are well equipped with decent options available, but plump for the ‘Advance’ model if you can, as it adds folding mirrors, a heated steering wheel, and ‘synthetic leather’ seats for a bit more of a premium feel.

One Way

After many years of supporting Windows PCs, I decided to switch to a Mac. It wasn’t a sudden decision as I had encountered the Applesphere thirteen years ago when an iMac appeared in my household. However, unable to abandon PCs entirely, I ran Windows ‘on the side.’

One day the iMac died and couldn’t be revived no matter how blue I turned the air. Even offering it my First Born wasn’t enough. Delving inside a PC was fine but the iMac was a mystery to me, needing special tools, so I left it to an expert in things all things Apple. It turned out the system board had expired. Then I discovered the difference between the baby iMac and the bigger 27” version: an additional £500 for a replacement board. While swapping out a PC motherboard was child’s play for me; one costing over £600 made my eyes bleed.

Moving on, I bought a MacBook. No, I really am that stupid. I don’t believe lightning will strike the same place three times. The difference this time is that I no longer work in IT supporting PCs with the result I am now happy to become a follower of fruit.

As a writer, I wanted to maintain my routine. I ended up using the same writing tools as before in the belief that they would have the same functions across the two platforms. Oh, I was so wrong. The result was that I sought to switch to an entirely different package and it was then I discovered a problem.

I have old emails going all the way back to 1999. Until 2022 they were easily accessible. Then I imported them into the Mac and in the New Year added those of 2022. However, when circumstances had me looking to move elsewhere, I discovered that I had been locked-in and there was no way to export the emails. I was now faced with paying Big Money to do what was free and easy with the PC version. Being tight, I had to become inventive.

My bodge was to use a temporary web-based email account and copy everything to the internet then download it to a PC. No money left my hands. Very happy but also, very, very tired.

I obviously didn’t learn. A few years later I bought another, and it went the same way as the first. Some might say I was very unlucky. Or very stupid. Whichever, they amounted to the same thing. However, the second iMac was pre-owned and because the cost of repair was about what I bought it for, I binned it.

My years working in IT taught me to always have a back out plan. Failure to do so usually meant being left high and dry without a clue how to get out of trouble. It was a useful approach to life in general.

It’s a pity I didn’t think things through this time. Obviously I’ve been out of the IT game too long…

Your stars

Flavour of the Times - The image for Pisces is of two fishes, one going upstream and the other down – sometimes at the same time! It is the last sign of the zodiac and Pisces people seem sometimes to be either very wise because they’ve learnt from everything that has happened to them, or just maddeningly confusing because they’ve absorbed so much data that they can’t cope with it all. The main thing to remember is that it is a water sign and water goes where it will. March is about watery emotional stuff until around 20th when Mercury and the Sun have both charged into Aries and the energy quickens suddenly. Big changes are afoot, but we can’t quite see how they will unfold yet. Whatever happens between 23rd March until mid-June will give us an inkling of what is to follow.

PISCES

February 20 – March 20

It’s a month of two distinct characters before and after 22nd. Before then, enjoy the feeling of swimming in the soup of the watery depths. After then, like a bolt from the blue, Aries will fire everyone up into sudden action so be ready. Try to maintain some steadiness within you as a lot of actions may be either seriously misguided, or just impetuous nonsense.

ARIES

March 21 – April 20

This month you get a glimmer of what’s to come this year, but only after the new moon in Aries on 22nd. The moon is joined by four other planets, all in Aries, so it’s a potentially massive acceleration forward into the spring and you are the one to get ahead and lead it. Make use of the watery Pisces energy before then by clearing your life of all that has become unnecessary.

TAURUS

April 21 – May 21

While Pisces is the watery flavour of early March, you will feel that nothing much is happening. However, the acceleration that will lurch you forward after 22nd could feel quite abrupt and take you by surprise. Don’t worry about this highoctane moment: your role is to make sense of this rush of energy next month and put it to work in a practical way. All in good time, in fact.

GEMINI

May 22 – June 21

You will like the surge of energy that the end of the month brings with the new moon in Aries but you might struggle to know where to put your efforts. The best advice thing is to try to wear blinkers and exclude too many extraneous diversions. It is preferable to make one significant step forward out of your winter self and into the energy of spring than to scatter your energies.

CANCER

June 22 – July 23

Early March will be quite emotional with all sorts of conflicting feelings coming to the surface. Long standing family issues will feel hard to resolve but try to resist the idea that it is always down to you to solve them. The desire to take action might become overwhelming after 22nd but that could only make matters worse. The dust will start to settle in about five weeks.

LEO

July 24 – August 23

You will need to make adjustments to your life in the first part of March. The self-reflective, rather introspective energy of this time is not really much to your liking but the kick of new spring power in the last 10 days of the month will feel like things have got going again. Find an Aries person to work with and you could be amazed how much progress you make in a short time.

VIRGO

August 24 – September 23

Dissolving watery, boundary-less emotional flooding – not what a Virgo likes at all. You revel in organising, categorising and creating order so the chaos around you may feel highly unsettling. After 22nd though, the new moon occurs in Aries and there are five planets in the sign. Suddenly it’s all action so the question is: how flexible are you able to be during these sudden changes?

LIBRA

September 24 – October 23

I get the impression you will find it hard to come to the big decisions you thought you might resolve this month. The seesawing of the scales that form the symbol of your sign means that you will be unable to come to any kind of equilibrium until the new moon in Aries grabs. Funnily enough, having the decision-making taken away from you may even seem like a relief.

You are bound to be affected personally by some if not all of the massive changes that are taking place this year. An astrological reading of your chart can forewarn you about how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you on a personal level during 2023, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. This is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year.

SCORPIO

October 24 – November 22

There may be some relief to be had from the intense pressure you have felt yourself to be under this month. Some of this may well have been self-imposed but don’t beat yourself up too much. After the 22nd, things may feel palpably different as major changes in the cosmos cause you to shift your course in ways that may turn out ultimately to be fundamental.

SAGITTARIUS

November 23 – December 22

Challenges to your personal life may be holding you back in many ways this month. Emotional issues may force their way to the surface against your will, but you are being invited to acknowledge their existence, maybe for the first time. Don’t turn your back as there are important lessons to be learned here that will help you in the future.

CAPRICORN

December 23 – January 20

Pluto leaves your sign on 23rd and goes into Aquarius until June. This is not yet a big deal for the planet as a whole, but it will be this time next year. Try to think about what has happened while Pluto has been in your sign since 2008. Be ready to move on to meet the new and unexpected changes that will start occurring. Life moves irrevocably on.

AQUARIUS

January 21 – February 19

You may have been dreading this as much as anticipating it but Pluto, the planet of transformation, moves into your sign on 23rd March. It stays there until June, then pops back in Capricorn for 6 months before finally going into Aquarius to stay for about the next 20 years. This is potentially momentous so tread carefully until you find your feet.

Chart readings with me start at £67 and last for an hour on Zoom or Skype. Please go to www.astroguidance.co.uk for more details and to book a session.
