From sights to sounds - did you know that local Singing for the Brain sessions organised by the Alzheimer’s Society have become very popular amongst people living with dementia? We all know our favourite tunes can bring back happy memories, and these fortnightly sessions are really something to shout about.
And, while we’re thinking about happy memories, Milton Keynes Museum has been preserving and sharing our local history for 50 years. Its collection shows the rich history of our new city, with some exhibits dating back 200 years.
On a sadder note, veteran road manager Neville Chesters, who finally settled in Stony Stratford after 50 years travelling around the world, passed away in April aged 77. He’ll be missed by many music legends. He was surely one of those born to be a rock and not to roll.
Enjoy the month.

Boyd & Evans: High Time
Saturday 27 May – Sunday 17 September
This first major survey of artist duo Boyd & Evans in over a decade marks 55 years of their collaboration.
The exhibition will focus on paintings, spanning their careers from the 1960s to today. It will display many of their experiments: from collage and stencil to spray-gun and brushes; surreal dramas that unfold in domestic, urban and suburban settings; and visual games between the real and artificial. It will include satirical political work, much loved scenes of Milton Keynes and epic depictions of the natural world in the USA, Malaysia and Brunei.
In 1980 Boyd (Fionnuala Boyd) & Evans (Les Evans) were commissioned to make work by the Milton Keynes Development Corporation. They were then invited back as artists in residence and have remained ever since. One of their best-known pieces, Fiction, Non-fiction and Reference (1984) situated in the Central Library, is treasured by Milton Keynes residents. Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a lightall fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords
are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.
Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been
referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have
any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.
When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window
once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

Celebrated at a unique ceremony at the Silverstone Wing, the Autocar Awards celebrate the best of the automotive world, as well as recognising individual excellence throughout the industry.
Kia’s diverse range of vehicles have had a confident start to 2023, with the all-new Niro and Sportage continuing to cement themselves as class leaders. Both models regularly contribute to making Kia the most popular brand in the C-SUV segment – and are now among the UK’s top 10 bestselling models overall. Kia’s range of EVs also continues to impress, with the EV6, Niro EV and Soul EV all receiving regular praise from critics and customers alike. It’s not only Kia’s award-winning products which hailed the win, it’s also the brand’s customer experience quality including first class ratings and the selection of convenience services and apps.
Mark Tisshaw, Editor of Autocar, commented: “It seems like a very long time since any of us have thought of Kia as ‘that funny budget car brand from Korea’. What a transformation Kia has been through. Very few brands of Kia’s size can boast product lines half as up-to-date. Both the totemic

EV6 and Sorento family SUV were launched in 2021, and still feel box-fresh. The sheer confidence exuded by the design of the Niro and Sportage was what really impressed, and made it so obvious that this year’s Best Manufacturer award could go nowhere else.”
Paul Philpott, President and CEO of Kia UK, said: “The past year has been fantastic for Kia.
Record sales in excess of 100,000 in 2022 meant we entered the year with full confidence in our model line-up, with each vehicle appealing to different customers. Everybody at Kia and throughout our nationwide dealer network is fully committed to ensuring we maintain this impressive trajectory, and I am thankful for the hard work and dedication shown by the entire
With plans to introduce a lineup of 15 fully-electric vehicles by 2027, Kia shows no signs of slowing down, and aims to further strengthen its position as a leading brand in the global EV market. The EV9, arriving in the UK later this year, is developed on the company’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and will usher in a new era of sophisticated, hightechnology, sustainable mobility for Kia.

‘We refused to let a flood stop us in our tracks’
The stylish modern offices of an estate agency in Milton Keynes mask the devastation that brought the business to the brink only 18 months ago.
A total 30 staff at Cauldwell Property Services in Central Milton Keynes had to be evacuated as tiles fell from the ceiling and water poured from the three floors above. The cause: a burst mains pipe in the apartments above the company’s ground-floor office, severely damaging the flats and Cauldwell’s 5,000 sq ft premises.
“Pretty much everything apart from the kitchen sink had to be removed and replaced,” recalls Cauldwell director Wayne Murphy.
The company was able to move to temporary offices in premises behind its water-soaked office and was up and running again within hours.
“We refused to let a flood stop us in our tracks,” says Wayne. “We made sure that all our customers were well taken care of and within just four hours of the flood we had a new temporary office secured, all IT and phone infrastructure reestablished,
moved our office belongings and started the process of refurbishment with our insurance company.
“The amazing local fire service came out and saw to everyone’s safety as a priority. We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to them.” All staff and residents of the apartments were safely
evacuated without injury. Cauldwell staff returned to the company’s repaired and refurbished offices in Avebury Boulevard six months later.
“We could not be happier with the refurbishment,” says Mr Murphy, who founded the independent estate agency 19 years ago with co-directors James Vintner and Jason Holmes. “We are delighted with our new office space which will always act as a reminder of what can be done in the face of adversity.”

Is a Kitchen re-spray the new way to update and save?
Many of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially since we have had more time at home. But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.
Now local company FX-SPRAY MK is offering a complete professional paint spray service for kitchens.
It is a quick and simple process that leaves your kitchen looking brand new, says FX-SPRAY MK. The company removes and sprays 90 per cent of the kitchen off site, which means that very little work has to be done in your home, in turn meaning minimal disruption. An average kitchen can be completed within a week and home owners continue to use it during the process.
FX-SPRAY MK only use specialist products and having the latest spray equipment means the company delivers that brand new factory finish. A colour matching service to all major paint brands gives a huge choice - you can even go with a two-colour scheme.
“Can any kind of kitchen can be refinished or is respraying just for solid wood?” As long as your kitchen is in reasonable condition, FX-SPRAY MK can refinish it., even carrying out minor repairs and changing handles as part of the process.
FX-SPRAY MK also treats doors, windows and furniture. For more information or a free quote, email jason@fxfinishing.co.uk or visit www.fxfinishing.co.uk

Executors and Administrators Responsibilities - Claims Against an Estate
This article covers the legal duties of executors and administrators regarding claims against an estate, including creditor and beneficiary claims. It emphasises the importance of managing these claims properly to avoid legal consequences and potential risks and liabilities.
Executors appointed under a Will of a deceased and Administrators appointed under the Rules of Intestacy (when there is no Will) should consider and be aware that claims can be made against an Estate within 6 months from the date of issue of a Grant of Probate/Letters of Administration.
Sara Taylor and the wills, trusts and probate team provide effective and proactive guidance when dealing with estates and estate planning.
The Executor/Administrator should caution against distributions out of an Estate from being made for the first 3 months and to be aware that claims can be made within the 6 month period.
Examples of Claims against an Estate
Reasonable Provision claimed by:-
• Any spouse or civil partner.
• Any former spouse or civil partner, provided they have not remarried or registered a new civil partnership, and provided no court order was made at the time of their separation that specifically precludes them from bringing such a claim.
The above information is for general guidance only and does not constitute legal advice. Heald Solicitors disclaims and excludes any liability in respect of the contents of this article or for action taken based on this information. If you need legal advice, please contact a solicitor.
• Any other person with whom the deceased was cohabiting continuously for the two years immediately preceding death as spouse or civil partner.
• Any children (which includes illegitimate, adopted and adult children, and children conceived but not yet born at the time of death, but not stepchildren unless they have also been adopted).
• Any person who the deceased treated as a child of the family in relation to any marriage or civil partnership and who was dependant (eg a former spouse’s child from a former relationship).
• A person the deceased may
have maintained (eg.in making a substantial contribution towards their reasonable needs up to death), on the basis that he or she had assumed responsibility for them.
Other reasons of challenges to a Will may include :-
• If there has been ‘undue influence’ on the deceased at the time the will was made.
• Mental incapacity of the deceased.
• All or any of the Will not being correctly signed, dated or witnessed
Liabilities of the Estate
It may be that the Revenue (HMRC), the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) or any other unknown creditors (Creditors may have a claim against an Estate). Full enquires should be made by an Executor/Administrator and consideration of the placement of Statutory Advertisements.
Heald are here to provide legal advice and take instructions from Executors/ Administrators (our client) to assist with Grants of Probate/Letters of Administration and to deal with Estate administration (ie. Grant application,
taxation gather in assets, settlement of liabilities and distribution) on behalf of our Client.
If you have been appointed as an executor or administrator of an estate, it is crucial to be aware of the potential claims that can be made against the estate and the timeframe in which they can be made. Take caution against making any distributions from the estate for the first three months and be prepared to handle any claims that may arise within the sixmonth period. This includes claims related to reasonable provision and challenges to the validity of the will.
Additionally, there may be liabilities of the estate to consider, such as taxes and creditor claims.
At Heald, we are here to provide legal advice and assist with estate administration to ensure that you fulfill your responsibilities as an executor or administrator properly. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help you navigate the complex process of estate administration.

Time to find a sense of balance
At times, many people have found the value of turning to a therapist like Lisa Alsford who has the experience and empathy to help make a difference.
Lisa, who has a wealth of treatments in her ‘toolbox’, has worked with many individuals looking to find a balance to their life.
“I like to talk to a client about what they are looking for and then put a treatment package together that will suit their specific needs,” said Lisa, who set up her business in 2008. These treatments include anything from crystal healing to natural therapeutics, reflexology, Indian head massage to Reiki. Massages, which might not be for everyone, are another option.
“Each client needs to be comfortable with the treatments so, for some, they may opt for a reiki which is not hands-on rather than another style of massage,” said Lisa, who is committed to keeping skills up-to-date with the latest treatments.
This attention to detail and experience means she is currently updating courses for the Think Tree Hub, a national network of training providers.
Lisa said: “It is important to me that each person gets the right treatment for them. They may think they are stressed because
of relationship support?
of work but the reason may be something from their childhood or a relationship.
“It is important to listen to each person and understand what they need to help them move forward. I am hoping to work with yet more people who are genuinely interested in healing – whatever that means to that person.
“I hope to be able to facilitate and help each person restore their balance inside themselves so they can then feel able to face other challenges which might be affecting their lives.”

Using music for memories
We know that listening to a favourite song makes us feel good, and a certain tune on the radio can trigger specific memories. Music is incredibly evocative, which also makes it such a brilliant tool for those living with dementia. In Milton Keynes, Singing for the Brain sessions have proven so popular that the fortnightly musical meetings – organised by the Alzheimer’s Society – recently celebrated their ninth anniversary. Sammy Jones spoke with Dementia Advisor Chelsea Gadd about the power of music.
Chelsea has worked to support people living with dementia for the last eight years; first as a live-in carer and then in a care home.
“When I first became a live-in carer, I supported a lovely lady who was diagnosed with dementia. After living with her and hearing her stories and experiences, I developed a keen enthusiasm to continue supporting people who are affected by dementia, and it’s mostly what I’ve been doing since,” she told Pulse.
When an opening to work for the Alzheimer’s Society presented itself two years ago, she didn’t think twice: “I jumped at the chance!” she said, and her day to day work now includes facilitating the groups the charity offers locally – Singing for the Brain is a small, but significant part of that role, although she won’t take the credit.
“We rely on our wonderful lead singing volunteers, Ruth and Tracey, to lead the singing. All our wonderful volunteers at Singing for the Brain work so hard in helping me run the sessions – I wouldn’t be able to do it without them!”

FEATURE
These events can average two dozen or so people, and it is important they are inclusive: “We have a wide range of ages that attend which is why it’s so important to have a diverse song list at each session.”
So what does a typical session sound like –what’s on the setlist of sorts?
“We sing a range of different songs including material by Neil Sedaka, The Beatles, and Queen. Sometimes our singing leads will set a theme for the sessions such as musicals, or if there’s a particular event near the session then we will centre the theme around that, like Christmas or summer holidays.”
As we mentioned at the start, music is a special kind of medicine. It is uplifting and all-encompassing, and for people dealing with dementia, it helps to replace isolation with a social side, and can help them recall memories and reminisce. It aides wellbeing, and connects the present with the past.
“Listening to favourite songs can bring back old memories and feelings,” Chelsea agrees, “Many people living with dementia are still able to enjoy music and to sing even when they start to lose their language abilities.
“While the search for a cure continues, we all must work together to support people living with dementia so they can live meaningful lives. Music is a wonderful way to do this.
“Research shows that musical memory is often retained when other memories are lost; music can help people to recall memories due to the nature of preserved memory for song and music in the brain. It brings people together with a common interest where they can share stories about a particular song they enjoy and reminisce about the ‘good old days.’”
If the pandemic left many of us feeling isolated, those feelings were only amplified for people living with dementia. The first time the group was able to get back in the room together post lockdown gave Chelsea one of her fondest memories to date.
“It was particularly memorable,” she recalled, “During the pandemic, people were very isolated, so everyone was so happy to be back
to the sessions and it really brought a sense of community to the group and showed how important and vital the service is to the people who attend.”
The benefits of these meetings are many, and obvious, but taking that first step to
connect can be daunting, scary even, but Chelsea and her team do their best to make everyone feel welcome.
It’s a safe, friendly space.
“Anyone attending the group for the first time will be greeted at the door and shown around to where the singing takes place. They will be introduced to the staff members and volunteers at the group. We provide name badges so that everyone can be reminded of each others’ name. The first half an hour of the session is spent having a chat over a tea or coffee and getting to know each other before the singing starts, attendees can choose where they would like to sit and there is always someone on hand to answer any questions.
“We want the group to be a positive and fun experience for everyone, with the well-being of the attendees as our top priority.”
Chelsea is a lady who really loves her work: “The part of the job that gives me the most satisfaction is seeing the difference in the people I support. Being diagnosed with dementia, or having a loved one living with dementia can be one of the most stressful, worrying and difficult times for a person and if the work I do can bring a bit of positivity to that experience, then I feel I’ve done my job right.”
> Singing for the Brain sessions take place on the first and third Monday of every month at Herons Lodge Guide Centre in Great Holm, between 2pm and 3.45pm.
> If you are worried about your memory, are a carer or a person living with dementia and you would like some support, Alzheimer’s Society also offers a support service in the new city.
Dementia Advisors are experienced, trained Alzheimer’s Society staff who can give information, tips and strategies based on your personal circumstances and support needs.
Support, information and guidance is available by phone, email, and face-to-face visits.
> Anyone wanting to talk in confidence can either phone 01908 232612 or email miltonkeynes@alzheimers.org.uk

The old history behind the new city
We love peeking into the past and sharing the secrets and stories of our local history, but this month, we thought we would shine a light on all that the Museum has to offer. It's a constantly expanding collection and the only one that tells the complete history of the place we all call home...
Yes, Milton Keynes is a new city, but the space it occupies is rich in history – and here at Milton Keynes Museum, we have been sharing that history for 50 years.
When you enter the Museum you do so through the front door, but in Victorian times only important visitors were afforded that privilege!
As we have explored in the past, Stacey Bushes Farm was bought by Oxford's Dr Radcliffe, but that farmhouse has long-since disappeared and the farmstead you visit today was built in 1847.
Around the same time that work on the farmhouse progressed, someone planted a Cedar of Lebanon tree, which is magnificent and dominates the space to the front of the property.
Once inside, you'll head straight into The Parlour. On a chilly day, the roar of an open fire as the winter sun peeks through the curtains makes the space instantly inviting.
Victorians used The Parlour as a space to display their most favourite possessions –they wanted to impress their visitors, and back then, the pianola and fancy curiosities were to be envied.
Across the hall, a room dedicated to Home Entertainment is to be enjoyed.
Forget downloads and music streams. Victorians were charmed by Roller Organs, Seraphones and Polyphon music boxes, and when you've brushed up on those, you can learn what it was like to hear a recorded voice for the first time from cylinders played on Edison's phonograph.
It was the cutting edge technology of its time and its arrival would have been met by much excitement.
Our Servants' Room explores what life was like for those in service – a 'career' which began at just 13 years old.

MK Museum's wonderful Street of Shops with many original store fronts, and (right) the 'Lovat' steam fire engine from Newport Pagnell
Today, we can order food online, or ask a robot to deliver it to our door. In the 19th century, things were very different, and when you had the food, you didn't store it in a fridge – there were no fridges!
The Kitchen – another hot spot on a cold day – is also the place to make fresh toast using the range. There were no shortcuts in Victorian times, but they did have tools for everything and we have many of them on display. Our wonderful volunteers will be happy to explain how they worked and let you try many of them out yourselves. Wherever possible, we like to be a hands-on Museum.
If you fancy a spot of window shopping with a difference, our Street of Shops is the place to head to; this is a truly authentic, unique opportunity to browse the stores of yesteryear which existed in our local towns.
We have the original facades for many shops, including the art deco appeal of the Newport Pagnell Co-op, Stony Stratford's long-since gone watering hole, The Angel, and the earlier branch of the Cox & Robinson chemist, complete with many original fixtures and fittings.
Contents of the ironmongers came from the long and trusted Odell name, and from Olney business Sowman's, which was founded before 1822 and declared themselves, 'Electric and hot water engineers, general furnishings and building ironmongers, shoe grindry merchants, house furniture, gas, tin and coppersmiths, artificial manure merchants and crockery merchants.’
If they didn't have what you were looking for, no-one would!
If you came over ill while shopping at these stores back in their time, you might have needed an ambulance. Our Bischoffsheim dates to 1903, and was hand carried. Reassuringly, it bears no comparison to today's high-tech ambulances. The Bischoffsheim have their place in history though, and were widely used by the police – they weren't withdrawn from use until 1938.
Children left school at a younger age than today, but the importance of learning hasn't changed.
Pupils were expected to show respect for their teacher and for their lessons, but the punishment was more severe. Boys not willing to toe the line might well feel the cane across their backsides or on the hands.
Finger stocks were used on those who would bite their nails, fidgeted or would not sit still during lessons – will you be brave enough to try them for size in our Schoolroom on your visit?
Continue on and you will come to the Barn, which will explore our relationship with the land which we were all connected in the not-toodistant past; we understood its value, knew the changing seasons, and could tell the time from the sun.
This ability is sadly largely forgotten today. The barn is also full of the equipment that our ancestors used in the efforts to fend off starvation and provide for the community.
The Communication Gallery is always a smash hit with children and adults who are actively encouraged to dial a phone or use the switchboard – very novel when you consider today's clever tech!
We do have a wide-variety of mobile phones too, including some early examples that you might well recognise. And Buzby the cartoon bird who fronted TV ads for Post Office Telecommunications (remember the catchphrase, 'Make someone happy with a phone call?') is resident here.
How do you take your news today? On your phone, possibly?
In Wolverton, 'The Print' was McCorquodale's Print Works which offered jobs to women who couldn't work at the Works across the road, and was the way to share the news of the day.
The machines on display in our Print Room show 150 years of printing and are still in working order.
As you move into the Hall of Transport, you will be greeted by the magnificence of the world's biggest steam tram, which once ferried workers between Stony Stratford and the Railway Works.
Sedan Chairs were popular during the 1600s and comprised a cabin mounted on poles, which would be carried by two men. It was a rudimentary forerunner of today's cab, and just the same as today, they needed to be licensed too.
Canals and waterways were crucial when it came to transportation of goods, and they have representation here, as do bicycles that span the centuries; from Penny Farthings, through to Chopper bikes.
Back in the 1859s, workers at Wolverton Works had no baths at home, and so a bath house was built for them to scrub up.
The hall of transport includes items from the bath house, including one of the baths.
And we have a lovely example of a horsedrawn steam fire engine, which came from Newport Pagnell.
The first recorded use of the 'Lovat' as she became known was at the Unionist Working Men's Club on Boxing Day 1912. The engine remained in service until 1939.
This brief stroll around the Museum is just a glimpse at what is on offer, and we hope you'll come to explore more of the history on your doorstep with us.
Our outside space is perfect for relaxation and enjoying the fresh air – we have a nature trail, the Bloomer locomotive, and you can stroll around our kitchen and war-time gardens which are rich in vegetables and have plenty of petal power during the summer months and beyond.
And a visit to the Museum could never be complete without catching sight of our 'moody' residents, the world-famous concrete cows!
As we celebrate our 50th year as a Museum we are working on our future; which will include taking visitors back to our ancient past, before dropping you into the here and now.
After all, what happens today is tomorrow's history...

Beachwear after a mastectomy
If you have had breast surgery and are wondering what to wear on the beach this summer, then we have you covered. There is no need to hide away under a beach dress unless you particularly want to and there are heaps of choices when it comes to bikinis, tankinis and swimwear.
Choose a well-made, pocketed swimsuit or bikini and it is possible to sunbathe, swim and even play beach volley ball if that’s your thing, all while securely and discreetly wearing your breast form. There are even breast forms designed for swimming that instantly drain as you leave the water.
Locally, Eloise (at Furzton Lake Milton Keynes) have a great selection of mastectomy bras and swimwear. Styles like the Carini are a great choice after surgery. Pocketed on both sides, the costume is designed to securely hold a breast form and the slightly higher neckline means that not only will the breast form be concealed but any higher scarring will also be covered. You can of course pair this with a co-ordinating or matching cover up for walking around the beach or pool.
So if you have a holiday planned this summer, why not visit the Eloise fitting suite on Furzton Lake, Milton Keynes Just call 01908 340 094 to make an appointment.

Woven Wonders
Temperatures are climbing, the sun’s staying up late, and some of us are looking forward to our first tan lines of the year
But, enter fashion’s plans for this season’s style — plans set to make those tan lines… complicated.
It’s the crochet, you see, dangling from darn near every rail, in almost every store on the high street right now. Plus the netted, knotted, fringed and raffia pieces - all inspired by the catwalks’ craftsmanship trend for Summer ’23. To wear it, follow Victoria Beckham and Jil Sander’s thread of thought; look for midi dresses finished with thick cascades of fringing; woven bodices and skirts that net the ankles. Else choose knitted, slimfit two-pieces as seen at Schouler; embellished macramé like the looks at Lanvin
Before you spend on anything new though, get crafty with what you already have at home - pull out the old woven wonders lying entangled at the back of your wardrobe. Added style points for any roped, beaded or wooden accessories you can weave into your look.

Calcutta Brasserie, the popular multi-award-winning Indian restaurant located in the heart of the historic town of Stony Stratford, is a reminder of the stunning independent restaurants our region has to offer.
Set within a beautiful 17th century chapel, Calcutta is one of the most highly celebrating and accoladed restaurants in the country. Recently under new management and celebrating after receiving the highest hygiene rating of 5 stars,
Calcutta Brasserie has a long-standing reputation for providing exceptional Indian cuisine, and this latest achievement is a reflection of the restaurant’s unwavering commitment to delivering quality food in a safe and hygienic environment. The owners of the restaurant have worked tirelessly to upgrade their facilities, making significant changes to the kitchen and undertaking structural modifications to the historic building that houses the restaurant.
With an investment of £25,000 in improvements, the changes made to the kitchen included installing new equipment and upgrading existing appliances to ensure the highest standards of food preparation and hygiene. The structural changes made to the building included updating the ventilation system and installing new flooring and wall coverings, all of which are designed to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the restaurant. Staff have also received additional training and achieved their level 2 in hygiene.
Commenting on the achievement, Mr. Ali, the owner of Calcutta Brasserie, said, “We are thrilled to have received a five-star hygiene rating from the FSA. Our team has worked incredibly hard to upgrade our facilities, and this rating is a testament to their dedication and commitment to ensuring that our customers can enjoy our food in a safe and clean environment.”
He added, “We take food hygiene very seriously, and we believe that it is essential to the success of our business. We are proud to have achieved this prestigious rating and will continue to strive for excellence in everything we do.”
Now, the restaurant is putting plans in place to reveal a new menu, announce exciting new events and entertainment in the coming months.
For now, guests can enjoy a wonderful array of weekly offers including the hugely popular Sunday Family Style Dining - a stunning feast experience that’s been created for sharing with the family. Choux Pastry great for savoury or sweet profiteroles and eclairs
METHOD
Makes 20 choux or 14 eclairs
INGREDIENTS
60g unsalted butter
60g full fat milk
60g water
pinch of seasalt
1 tsp caster sugar - optional if using for dessert recipe
110g lightly beaten whole eggs - this equates to 2 medium eggs
35g plain flour
35g strong bread flour
In a saucepan, place the pinch of salt, sugar if using, butter, water and milk and bring to a rolling simmer.
Take off the heat and add your flour all at once. Combine fully and place again on the heat, to cook the flour for a few minutes, until a slight film at the bottom of the saucepan is created.
Remove from the heat and at this stage you can transfer to a bowl of a stand up mixer, or place the mix in a cooler bowl and start cooling down the mix with a wooden spoon.
Once the mixture is no longer steaming and warm to touch, start adding your eggs little at the time. Make sure to incorporate the egg fully before adding more. The mixture will split at first, but as you combine, this will come together resembling a thick custard consistency.
You know that it’s ready to be piped when lifting the spoon, the batter will drop, rather than flow from it, and leave a V shape point.
Transfer the mixture in to a piping bag, no need for a tip, and start piping in your preferred shape. These can be filled with a sweet filling of whipped double cream and coated in melted dark chocolate or use your preferred savory filling.
Our recipes come from MK Pulse food writer, Sofia Gallo, an acclaimed local chef, food writer and teacher at Milton Keynes Cookery School. She has recently won the ICG Cooking Competition and was a contestant on BBC’s Masterchef.

How does your garden grow?
June is the month we have been waiting for –the longest days and the borders all in flower! However, weeding and watering are most important. Water butts are proving their worth. We are continuing to sow short rows of salad greens, beetroots and carrots and the radishes are providing a tasting opportunity for the children. The leaves are edible, too, and make an unusual addition to the salad bowl.
Young courgettes, pumpkins, squashes, sweet corn and tomatoes may be moved out of the greenhouse (after careful hardening off) when the temperatures are above 10°C (50°F) at night.
It is time to plant up wall and hanging baskets using the special compost available for the purpose. Thoroughly water both the selected plants before planting and the filled baskets to ensure their establishment. Some roses may need dead-heading and the sweet peas might have to be persuaded to cling to their support structures. Take care! The baby birds in the garden are hiding under hedgerows. They have left the nest but can’t yet fly. They may look abandoned, but their parents will know where they are.
Like them, spend your days in the garden –enjoy it!
Ralph Westmoreland.
It doesn’t seem so long ago that we were advising you to tidy up the garden for the winter months, and here we are already looking towards the longest day of the year, on June 21.
Of course the arrival of summer means the garden is at its active best; with flowers, fruits and vegetables all lining up for inspection.
Together with the blooms and nature’s parlour, weeds also pop up everywhere, but their arrival is received less favourably. The easiest way to keep them down is to hoe your borders regularly in dry weather.
If you mow, lawns need to be cut weekly, but perhaps have a rethink for the moment.
If you leave the mower in the shed for a while, you’ll get more free time and our pollinating insects will flock to your garden to enjoy the wildflowers that start to spring up – and our wildlife needs all the help we can give it.
The charity Plantlife says we have more than 20 million gardens in the UK.
Every one that is left to flourish will make a difference to the climate, and for our insects like bees and butterflies.
Common plants recorded by Plantlife last year which benefited from mow-free times included creeping buttercup, white clover, oxeye daisy and yellow rattle.
We all have a responsibility to play our part in giving a space back to nature, and No Mow May was just the beginning.
If you have a greenhouse, it will likely be bursting with good things, but if you fail to introduce shading and ventilation, all your hard work will wilt and die; plants need humidity, shading and air circulation. Netting and blinds are widely available and worth the little investment.
With temperatures rising and plants to nurture, watering is key, but climate change and increasing demand on H20 is having an effect on supplies in the UK.
Plants start to use water when the sun rises, so watering in the morning is ideal; evening watering isn’t as effective and encourages our garden gastropods.
If you soak them when temperatures are at their hottest, much will be lost through evaporation. How often and how much you water depends on the plant of course; heed the advice on your care labels and learn to ‘read’ your plant. Too much or too little and it will let you know.
Rainwater will always be the preferred choice for gardeners. If you can, introducing a water butt to your garden is ideal, although it won’t pay dividends quite yet!

Muse prepare to bowl you over
Back in early 1999, alt-rock quartet Gene played at the now defunct Wolverton venue The Main Arena.
The support band that night had yet to release their debut album, and they played for a £90 fee and a crate of Stella.
One imagines their rider – and their fee – will have increased significantly when Muse lead The National Bowl through their back catalogue on June 25.
The band has been to the Bowl previously though. In 2010, the full-stage production for The Resistance tour was set up at the venue for a tech-check.
Support at this upcoming date will come from Brighton two-piece Royal Blood, who are familiar with the venue having accompanied Foo Fighters on their 2015 shows there.
The Bowl date is another opportunity for Royal Blood to stretch their musical muscle before a crowd of up to 65,000 but they are up to the challenge – they’ve previously headlined London’s 02 to 20,000 of their own disciples. The Warning are tasked with opening the event.
> Tickets are still available through gigsandtours.com
Weeping Willows to play Wavendon
Australian Folk Music award-winning Americana duo The Weeping Willows visit The Stables this month. The date is part of an extensive tour of these shores in support of last year’s third album, You Reap What You Sow
Devoted to each other and to the life of the artist in seemingly equal measure, every dark hour spent huddled together refining their
sound in the dimly lit backroom of their home on the Southern outskirts of Melbourne is a labour of love.
Your chance to invade their personal space (respectively) comes when they play the Wavendon venue on June 17.
> To book for their Stage 2 appearance, visit stables.org

Girls, Gays & Theys night debuts at The Craufurd Arms
Pet Needs were due to kick off the month of June at The Craufurd Arms (June 5), but the Essex-based punk rockers have bowed out in order to take on a run of European shows as support to Flogging Molly. They will play here later in the year.
Lifesigns (June 10) say they are ‘in the business of music, not in the music business,’ and they certainly have playability and credibility in plentiful supply; members have worked with artists including Asia, The Scorpions, Bonnie Tyler and Quincy Jones.
Fans? They’ve got a few – their 2021 album Altitude was crowdfunded in 40 countries worldwide and has been compared to artists including Steely Dan and Pink Floyd. Intrigued? Go take a ticket.
A spanking new alternative club night out on its debut nationwide run is stopping off at The Craufurd (June 17).
Girls, Gays & Theys is a welcoming space for all, but will ‘focus on women, non binary folk and trans people as DJs and will give anybody who isn’t a cis-male a platform.’
DJ sets will come from Janine Vukovi, Feralwitch and Colly, and they’ll be bringing the best in metal, emo, pop-punk, punk and alternative sounds.
Tickets are a mere three quid in advance and the music rolls from 8pm.
Key reference points for the recently released Liminal EP by ĠENN include Baxter Drury, LCD Soundsystem, Captain Beefheart and Warpoint..
The EP contrasts searing post-punk missives with more allusive mediations cocooned in psychedelic textures. Sounds like quite a meal for the ears. You can catch the quartet live on June 18. No prizes for guessing what Nirvana UK are all about, and this trio do their utmost to recreate the distinctive sound of the Seattle stars, using the same instruments, effect boxes and preamp that the real deal used in their time. Set-wise, expect to hear material not only from Nevermind, but from the whole spectrum of their live and studio catalogue.
The band will be in bloom, as it were, on June 24. Smells like a right good tribute night...
American hardcore punk mob Show Me The Body (June 28), and The Fillers – a tribute to Brandon Flowers’ Killers (June 30) brings June to a close at the venue.

Sean Grant and the Wolfgang promised Pulse Music that 2023 was going to be a busy one, and Sean wasn’t fibbing; at the end of April they released the single We Are All Of One, and earlier this month the single launch – at The Cannon in Newport Pagnell – was a hot and sweaty one.
Sold-out in advance, the bill also featured Howling Bee, Post Machine and Broken Castles.
The track, described by the band as ‘a bold and darkly hypnotic call to cosmic arms, born out of a synth pulse that throbs into life, forged from an 80s aesthetic, brooding bass rolls and orchestral bombast’ preaches a moment of unity.
“We’re always looking for meaning about why we’re here and we try to gain that from outside
of ourselves,” says the frontman, “But ‘We Are All Of One’ is about recognising the power in us all and realising that it’s a miracle we’re all here in the first place, in this space and this time. This is something to celebrate.
“We are all reflections because we, as people, are the universe experiencing itself. It’s also true that what you see in other people is a mirror image of what you see in yourself, whether that’s good or bad.”
The single is the first track taken from the spanking new four-track EP, Kybalion Part I which will be released on June 9 through Vandalism Begins at Home Records. The band will play an EP launch show at The Castle in Luton on June 16, and if you have wheels and want to travel, Wolfgang will be live at The Castle Hotel in Manchester on August 11.

Neville Chesters 1945-2023
The music world is mourning the loss of former road manager Neville Chesters, who passed away on April 27. He was 77 years old, writes Sammy Jones Yorkshire born, Neville worked for some of the industry’s biggest players in music, a career that began in 1963 with The Merseybeats, which is when he first made the acquaintance of Lemmy Kilmister, who would of course go on to be the frontman with Motorhead.
“I remember it well – we were playing at the Blackpool Palace Ballroom,” Neville told me during one anecdote laden conversation.
Lemmy told Neville about his band, The Rockin’ Vicars, and during backstage chats a firm friendship was forged.
“He was a little bit brazen even then, but nowhere near like he became,” Neville recalled.
During the sixties and seventies, Neville was a road manager for bands including The Who, and it was Neville who gave Lemmy his infamous job roadying for Jimi Hendrix.
“...he never ever did anything! He would pick up two guitars, carry them into the gig, and then he’d disappear.
“But Lemmy just slotted in. Although he didn’t have the job for long, there wasn’t an actual end to the relationship, other than him telling me that he was going to put his own band together.
“He always had a respect for me, and me for him. To me, Lemmy was a lovable character, and a loyal friend.”
Neville worked for bands including Cream and The Bee Gees, and spent time with The Beatles’ founded label, Apple Records.
Despite taking breaks from the industry, the live environment always lured him back and he went on to work with many other artists including Greg Lake, from Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
At the start of the ‘90’s he upped sticks and moved to New York, launching film company, The Loft.
In 2013, he moved back to these shores, settling in Stony Stratford, where became friends with local musician Neil Harrison.
“Neville had many sides to his love of music including supporting the grass roots DIY Punk scene,” he said, “He became great friends to local punk band Crash Induction and was involved with the aptly known Concrete Punx Gig Nights,” Neil said.
“Neville attended nearly all these events at The Blacksmiths Arms in Downs Barn. Neville would often introduce the bands on stage, and loved chatting to the band members and punters, sharing his amazing stories. He was very popular and much respected.
“A ‘Punk 4 Neville’ night is currently being planned in his memory.”
Musician Malcolm Bruce – son of Cream bassist Jack Bruce, said: “Such an amazing and unique person with an incredible life story.
Neville was always so encouraging and positive and honest, I know he had an impact on a great many people and he will be sorely missed. Much love Neville, fly high and keep smiling over us.”
Stray frontman Del Bromham also paid tribute: “Trying to pin down the exact date when we first met is hard to remember,” Del said, “I know it was in Milton Keynes at The Craufurd Arms, possibly sometime mid to late 1980’s. I was hosting a musicians jam night. My friend Stuart Uren had been on tour with Dexys Midnight Runners and became friendly with the American session guitarist Jerod Minnis.
“Stuart brought him along to play a few songs. Jerod was playing his Fender guitar left handed and it was like having Hendrix in the room.
“Unusually, Neville was there that evening and introduced himself, enquired who the guitarist was and could I introduce him? The more we talked I realised the reason he was interested was because this was the infamous Neville Chesters who was once the road manager for Jimi Hendrix.
“Over the years I got to know Neville well. He always talked affectionately about my choice of guitars - mainly the Gibson Firebird. I am going to miss him at my shows and sharing our stories and his bright pink dayglo trainers,” Del added, “They don’t make ‘em like Neville Chesters. Rest in peace old friend. You were a special man.”
New York based musician and Blues Hall of Fame inductee Tommy Maher met Neville more than a decade ago and the pair struck up a mutual appreciation: “Neville was one of my very closest and best friends. Probably the most caring and unselfish man I’ve ever met,” Tommy told Pulse Music, “I only wish he could have seen himself the way others saw him. He was an icon, a legend, and a major part of rock n roll history. Rest easy my brother. See you on the other side.”

Go along with Bleak Expectations and you’ll not be disappointed!
‘A comedy romp with a heart as big as the laughs it brings’ was promised with The Birds and the Bees which was set for a five day stay at Milton Keynes Theatre this June, but the whole tour - which saw Helen Lederer and Michael Starke in star billing - was recently cancelled.
The Stables stage will be a wee bit busy at the start of the month, with musical aces galore queuing up to share the space. Everyone from Billie Eilish to Kate Bush will be in the house. Kind of.
Ace impressionist Debra Stephenson (June 1) arrives with her show ‘The Many Voices of’, which will see her hurtle through time in a multiverse of musical icons.
The star of Spitting Image and Dead Ringers will also deliver a side portion – her trademark impressions of those who ‘live’ at the Houses of Parliament will also get a look in.
Or, how about Bleak Expectations (June 1-3), ‘an alternative take on Charles Dickens’ delivered by Milton Keynes Theatre of Comedy (MKTOC).
The spoof by Mark Evans is, they say, a ‘splendidly silly story,’ which brings a whole new dimension to the Radio 4 comedy. Prepare to snivel, giggle and swoon.
Thrill to the adventures of Pip Bin, his siblings and pals as they race against time to thwart the schemes of the wicked Mr Gently Benevolent.
MKTOC have the art of cheeky theatre down to a tee, and tackling big brands doesn’t daunt them – they’ve already sizzled on stage with Fawlty Towers, Porridge, Blackadder and Allo Allo.
Go with Bleak Expectations, come away having been royally entertained! Tickets for the show at the Chrysalis Theatre are on sale at mktoc.co.uk
In a statement, producers said, ‘This decision was not taken lightly, but it remains the case that the current market for touring drama is highly challenging in terms of attracting audiences.’
That’s all rather gloomy, and we could do with something to cheer us up now.
Thankfully, there’s another opportunity to find the funnies at Wavendon venue The Stables with the very welcome return of Griff Rhys Jones, who brings his new stand-up show, The Cat’s Pyjamas, here for a two-night stay (June 16 & 17).
This is no scripted affair, either – the theme is there is no theme.
Griff will ramble on the developing national permacrisis. He might talk about age, family, fraud, nostalgia or the Tik Tok generation. His rambling might even include crocodile smuggling or dogs, hotels, drink and midnight trains.
And you’ll get to ask the man, famous as one quarter of Not The Nine O’Clock News and as one half of Smith & Jones, questions. Get those thinking caps on.
A thrilling adventure of fantasy, myth and friendship makes its MK Theatre debut this month, and it’s one that promises to take its audience ‘on an epic journey to a childhood once forgotten and the darkness that lurks at the very edge of it.’
This National Theatre adaptation of The Ocean at the End of the Lane (June 27July 1) is the largest tour they have delivered since pre-pandemic times, and will be on the road in total for 40 weeks. The stint began back in December, so it will be well-oiled when it hits our stage. ‘Returning to his childhood home, a man finds himself standing beside the pond of the old Sussex farmhouse where he used to play. He’s transported to his 12th birthday when his remarkable friend Lettie claimed it wasn’t a pond, but an ocean – a place where everything is possible... Plunged into a magical world, their survival depends on their ability to reckon with ancient forces that threaten to destroy everything around them.
“It’s about who you were and who you are,” explains writer Neil Gaiman, “It’s not like anything else you’ll ever see at theatre... It’s why happy people tell you that they cried while watching it, it’s why it becomes a dreamlike experience in memory, it gets bigger the further inside you follow it. Like a duck pond that contains an ocean that holds the universe...”

Messy Business
My wife and I are in the throes of house hunting. Anyone who has engaged in the practise can testify to the fact that it can be a messy business. If it goes well, then the only things to consider are what goes where by way of furniture, and how to cut the unexpectedly long grass…
Assuming it all goes well.
The secret appears to be viewing lots of houses until seeing one that ticks lots of boxes on a badly written list. Or maybe, forget boxes and just fall in love. Whichever, we made an offer, had it declined, made another offer just under the asking price then heard nothing. After a day, we chased the estate agent only to discover that the seller had another couple of interested parties. There was momentary panic and another offer went in for the asking price.
The secret appears to be viewing lots of houses until seeing one that ticks lots of boxes on a badly written list.
Oddly, the estate agent communicated the offer but advised us that the vendor still wished to allow the other parties to view the property a few days away before deciding whether to accept our offer. This was a pain because, having sold our own property, we really wanted to secure a deal before the coronation weekend. With a housing market in receipt of a thorough kicking from a vengeful economy, one might have thought that someone wishing to sell a house wouldn’t drag their feet when a prospective buyer comes

along. Especially not when that buyer is downsizing, buying without a mortgage and very obviously impatient to move. Our assumption was that the vendor was hopeful of kicking off a bidding war amongst prospective buyers. This was something we were not going to be involved in.
With the coronation on Saturday, the week preceding had become book-ended by the bank holiday weekend and someone selling a house wasn’t going to endear themselves to anyone by ruining said weekend through messing about. Hoping to conclude things, we made another chase call but this time we emphasised the fact that our house was sold, our buyers have sold their property, we were ready for action, and we were becoming rather impatient. Regardless, there was no change of stance on the part of the seller.
Given that they had recently lost their job, our concern was that should the vendor once more secure employment while the wheels of conveyancing rotated at a glacial rate, then they wouldn’t hesitate in pulling the plug and leaving any prospective buyer (us) high and dry, even if it meant doing so merely days ahead of exchange of contracts.
By late Thursday we decided to enjoy the coronation weekend, regardless of weather, rather than fretting over the question of, will they, or won’t they? Driving home, conversation in the car was all about that particular property and possible problems. Action was agreed and I pulled over to call the estate agent and draw a line under the matter by withdrawing our offer and interest: which was a rather cathartic moment as it turned out…

Your stars
Flavour of the Times - The flavour of the most recent new moon may have been about quietly ploughing your furrow and getting stuck into whatever matters most to you but as we tip over into the Gemini period, this month it’s all about communicating. Gemini likes to have fun but can be over-excitable and indiscriminate in who it talks to and, as we know from war-time advertising, ‘Careless Talk costs Lives’. So we should all take a bit more care in how we communicate with and with whom. Remember, communication is a two-way process so listening is just as important as talking. ‘Know when to speak and how much to say’ is one way of expressing what good communication is all about. Know when to shut up is another way!
GEMINI
May 22 – June 21
The new moon in your sign on 17th is a bit flirtatious, particularly for you. Especially with Venus and Mars in the mix; and Leo too. There may be too much showing off and fluttering of plumage to attract a mate. Whether this is serious, though, is very much open to doubt but you can still have a lot of fun and adventures, so long as you keep at least one foot on the ground.
CANCER
June 22 – July 23
This month could cause you to feel a bit left out while social life seems to whirl around you but not include you. There is an opportunity to feel into past hurts and difficulties and just let them slip by. The benefits of this may not be felt until next month when you feel more stable and emotionally secure as the sun moves into your own sign.
LEO
July 24 – August 23
I hope that both Venus and Mars’ sun together in your sign will not to send you too far over the top this month. Preen your feathers and enjoy your charismatic sex appeal if that is what you experience, particularly around 22nd but it will be a fleeting flirtatious influence and will soon be over. Just have fun and enjoy it and don’t expect too much lasting effect.
VIRGO
August 24 – September 23
Others may wish to party on regardless while you are intent on trying to rescue some order out of chaos – as usual. They may also be expecting you to do the clearing up so, at the risk of being a party pooper, you may have to bang a few heads together to make them listen. On the other hand, you could just let your heavy responsibilities go for a while and join in.
LIBRA
September 24 – October 23
Your sometimes overwhelming desire for a spirit of true partnership may be tested this month as the trivial pursuit of pleasure and fun may leave you feeling quite frustrated. You may well be attracted to the joyous sense of fun that many Geminis project but the flirting is often only skin deep for them and they are probably too easily bored to be the right match for you. Just enjoy the party.
SCORPIO
October 24 – November 22
You may have been ‘putting in a shift’ and working really hard recently and you may well have found that quite productive, in that it takes you a few steps forward towards your goals, but June is much more lighthearted so a change of tack now is probably a good idea. An interesting if unexpected encounter with a charismatic Leo may leave you enchanted, but ultimately confused.
SAGITTARIUS
November 23 – December 22
The ground between your feet may feel as if it’s shifting all the time and it is true that big changes may be in the offing – but maybe not yet. You may be restless, wanting a sense of freedom and adventure or at least something different in your life, but there’s always the possibility that the really big changes may be the ones in your head, not over the next hill. Be flexible.
CAPRICORN
December 23 – January 20
Pluto retreats slowly back into your sign on 10th and will be there until the beginning of next year, so now is a period when you should look back at the past to see what you want to take forward. Mistakes should be examined so that you can learn the lessons but it’s also important not to be in any hurry to initiate new commitments. This is a time for serious reflection.
You are bound to be affected personally by some if not all of the massive changes that are taking place this year. An astrological reading of your chart can forewarn you about how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you on a personal level during 2023, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. This is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year.
AQUARIUS
January 21 – February 19
You may feel more than a little confused. After all that work you have put in, nothing seems to have come of it and you are starting to wonder if it was all worth it. With Pluto leaving you in the lurch this month, it’s probably time to just enjoy life the way it is. Your ideas are going to take a little longer to find their moment. Patience is now required.
PISCES
February 20 – March 20
Unconscious fears and worries may be surfacing for reasons that you may not be clear about. Perhaps you are frightened of the future or maybe you just feel ill-equipped to deal with everything going on around you? Questions that you have been wanting answers to for a while may well just resolve themselves in their own good time.
ARIES
March 21 – April 20
Coming down to earth with a bang after the excitement of recent weeks may feel like a bit of a shock to the system, but perhaps that’s a good thing. It will give you pause for thought so that you can regroup, get a few things sorted out in your head. There’s plenty of time for this with Pluto back in Capricorn, so do the wise thing and think things out before acting.
TAURUS
April 21 – May 21
The benefits and rewards of recent hard work can be seen now as Jupiter makes it into your sign. The bringer of abundance is going to be there for at least until the end of the year so you will feel his presence through solid progress building on what has gone before. Persistence will start to pay off this month, so long as you stay grounded in your approach.
