First I want to say ‘we are a city’ – what a wonderful Platinum Jubilee honour. No wonder our contribution to the celebrations was so fantastic with key workers, community groups, residents and students all playing their part in the fantastic ‘thank you’ dance along the Mall. Now, back to 15 pages of Summer Fun. Football fans won’t want to miss the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 at Stadium MK this month.
You can explore 750 acres at Stanwick Lakes and The Parks Trust is encouraging you to discover Milton Keynes’ greenspaces. Youngsters can learn about plants, ponds, birds and insects at Howe Park Wood. Don’t forget the remaining summer Moo events in aid of Willen Hospice and remember to buy your Summer Draw tickets – there’s a £2,000 first prize. You can also support Cancer Research UK at Northampton’s Race for Life and Pretty Muddy events or the Northamptonshire Health Charity at the Northampton Half Marathon. The MK Playday is back and there are also Parkland Play and Summer of Play events. You can go on a nostalgic train ride to help the Marston Vale Line celebrate its 175th anniversary and discover more about the Northampton and Lamport Railway with Laura Malpas. Historic Delapré Abbey, grounds and the Walled Garden will be home to all sorts of events and there will be plenty to see at all our local museums and galleries. For arts lovers there are theatrical treats from Aladdin to Peter Rabbit and summer song writing sessions at The Stables. For a spectacular weekend of entertainment next month try the first New Bury Summer Festival. Here comes summer!

Grand Mentors from Volunteering Matters, the Milton Keynes Hindu Association, MC ACT, MK Collective: Artists & Makers, Sew & Grow and Childcare Pathways. Shobhna Padhiar, who took part in the pageant as a representative of Milton Keynes Hindu Association, said: “I felt very proud, honoured and privileged to have been able to represent my community in this once in a lifetime opportunity. It was immensely amazing and wonderful to celebrate Platinum Jubilee for the best-known and respected Queen in the world.” Students from Arts1 danced around the three queens with colourful silk flags representing environmental themes as a pledge from young people to take care of our planet. The Thank You Dance was created by co-artistic directors Ali Pretty from Kinetika and choreographer Jeanefer Jean Charles, who had created the Celebrate Milton Keynes event. Producer Rachel Wright said, “It was fantastic pay tribute to the key workers, the community and the Queen for her 70 years of service, and to see all of the participants enjoying the crowds in the Mall and in front of Buckingham Palace.”
Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust! These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords
are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been
referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems. When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window
once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”. Secret garden is restored to its former glory
T
ucked away in the south-west quarter of central Milton Keynes, the garden has laid undisturbed for several years. Now it has been restored to its former glory after work by the landscaping team at MyMiltonKeynes BID. They support the council’s work in maintaining and regenerating green space within the BID area and, following a site visit to the overgrown and unused Grafton Park, were eager to uncover its natural beauty and set to work on clearing, strimming and sculpting the garden. “It has been incredible to witness the unveiling of this beautiful and quite unbelievable park in the middle of central Milton Keynes, with its whimsical water features and carefully sculpted paths,” says BID chief executive Melanie Beck. The site is also among Milton Keynes Council’s new ‘wildlife havens’, attracting biodiverse plants and wildlife. “We are excited to be supporting the BID in their work to restore Grafton Park to its former glory and look forward to the positive impact that this exceptional greenspace, in the centre of Milton Keynes, will provide to the local community,” says its head of environment and waste Nicholas Hannon.

LEGAL
‘I’m applying for contact, but my ex has raised allegations against me’
Najmin Matin and the Heald Family Department deal with separations and divorces with kindness and good sense.
Artemis House, 4 Bramley Road Milton Keynes MK1 1PT
The above information is for general guidance only and does not constitute legal advice. Heald Solicitors disclaims and excludes any liability in respect of the contents of this article or for action taken based on this information. If you need legal advice, please contact a solicitor.
It can be extremely frustrating if you have made an application to the court to have contact with your children and your ex has made allegations about you. Being faced with this kind of situation can make it harder for you to be practical and realistic. What you need to do is work on a plan to knock down each barrier between your current situation and your ultimate goal. You need to remember that until the judge has decided whether the allegations raised are true, there is a duty to protect the children if there is a risk of harm. It can feel disenchanting or even infuriating when false or exaggerated allegations are made against you, especially when they are made with the aim of limiting or preventing contact. However, patience will be needed until the court has had the opportunity to hear the evidence. Try to focus on ensuring that any contact, whether direct or indirect, is positive and try not to open yourself up to any criticism. Gather any evidence in support of your case, take part in any assessments that are recommended or directed by the court, and demonstrate to the court that you are a caring parent who has their child’s best interests at heart. Focus on the things you can control - which is your own behaviour and your own evidence. Avoid falling into the trap of mudslinging and having it out with your ex in the court arena just because they are making false allegations about you. This will just create a bad impression and distract you from the strengths of your case. Also, try and foresee the consequences of your actions. If the allegations are that you are violent or have anger management problems, your ex could easily provoke you into behaving in a certain way and then using your reaction as evidence to prove their point. It is also tempting to respond to allegations with counter allegations. Unless your application is also an application for the children to live with you, this is unlikely to help your case and may even harm your case, because the court may see you as hostile. It is difficult to be the only parent under the spotlight, but if
you are asking for contact and serious allegations have been made against you, that is the way it is, and the court process will need to be followed. So, concentrate on showing why there are no good reasons to restrict your contact, rather than on trying to prove that your ex is worse than you. The court will usually restrict the issues and the evidence to what is relevant to the application at hand, so if you are applying for contact, the court is not going to be making decisions about the standard of your ex’s parenting; but will be more concerned about the level of contact that you are seeking and whether this in the child’s best interests. Going on about how rubbish the other parent is will just give the court the impression that you are resentful towards your ex and less interested in the welfare of your children. As a general rule: If you are applying to have contact with your children, put your best feet forward and concentrate on showing yourself in the best light, instead of trying to show your ex in a bad light. And finally remember, the court will take the view in almost all cases that children should have a relationship with both parents, unless it finds that the children will be at serious risk of harm if direct and/or indirect contact is to take place. If you are looking for further assistance or information that will give you peace of mind, our family law team would be delighted to help you.

Hello
NATURE I
f you fancy getting out and about in the country, Stanwick Lakes near Wellingborough is a no-brainer; a 750 acre attraction and nature reserve in the heart of the Nene Valley. Its extensive space is ripe for exploration and suitable for families, walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. Get busy with the adventure trail and playground, reach for the binoculars and enjoy a spot of bird watching or stretch your legs and fill your lungs with countryside air on a lakeside walk. A summer programme of events tailored for children will allow them to start enjoying nature in an engaging, educational and fun way: “Discover the underwater world at a pond dipping session, hunt for mini beasts in the undergrowth and build a magnificent den in our newly opened woodland,” is the call from the reserve. The visitor centre has been spruced up too, and now includes a fresh, modern cafe and gift shop, and a range of function rooms and spaces that will present a rolling programme of heritage and art exhibitions. Stanwick Lakes is the perfect spot for those looking to get away from it all, but still be home in time for tea!

Stanwick Lakes is rich in wildlife including bats, otters, stoats, rabbits, foxes and badgers. The meadows are home to shrews, voles, field and wood mice and Muntjac deer are a familiar sight. The lakes and reedbeds are protected and internationally important for nesting birds, harvest mice and many species of moth. Thousands of visitors every year come to see the birdlife, and there is lots; from Common Terns and Great Crested Grebe to Tufted Ducks and Wigeons. Aside from its wintering species, its green spaces and wetland areas are also home to Barn Owls and Tawny Owls and ducks, and the bramble and hedgerows often ‘chatter’ with some of our prettiest garden birds including Chaffinch, Goldfinch and Robin, and the less common Goldcrest, Long-tailed Tit and Bullfinch.

nything that gives youngsters a break from their technology and encourages them to enjoy the flora and fauna around them is a great thing. And one of the best ways to foster a love of the great outdoors and an appreciation of nature is to engage with some of the many events hosted in the green spaces of Milton Keynes by The Parks Trust. Throughout July and August they will be hosting a number of opportunities for little people to boost their learning. Love Nature Day (July 2) will explore different ways children can help nature at home, and they’ll be able to meet volunteers with a passion for moths, swifts and bats. Bug hunting and pond dipping experiences will also be hosted at the event at Howe Park Wood, which is home to more than 30 different species of butterfly and more than 200 plant species. Professional storyteller Terrie Howie has a passion for telling tales outside; Summer Stories in the Park will be sharing immersive local folk stories when she visits Great Linford Manor Park (July 25).

Songwriting sessions at the Stables
Hello
MUSIC
A different sort of chorus line!
T
he Stables is tuning up to nurture musical minds this summer with songwriting sessions ready to unlock the potential of youngsters. Participants at one of the events will join with like minded music lovers to write and record a song in a day. The collaborative session will use games and music play to learn how a song can start, how to contribute ideas and work to record a brand new track that will be performed and recorded before the end of the day. 20
Ages 10-11 are invited to the workshop on July 27, with those aged 12-14 attending the following day. The sessions will run 10am-3pm. Organisers will hit the right note with an opportunity to work on those aforementioned songwriting skills on July 29. How do you start a song? How should you structure it? Are there rules, and if so, can they be broken? This is an opportunity to find out. Suitable for those aged 15-17 years old, it works for newcomers to the songwriting process, and for those who have already started on their journey. Finally, a three-day Summer Songwriting Workout (August 1-3) will offer a chance to explore and learn in a practical way what to do to get song ideas into shape, dealing with melody, harmony, chord progression, hooks, analysing songs and learning from different styles. If participants can sing, or play an instrument too, then so much the better. While the workout isn’t geared towards recording or production, there will be an insight into Digital Audio Workstations as part of the journey. This workshop is for ages 17-19. > For details call 01908 280800 or visit stables.org

BOOKS W
e said there is no need to go whizzing off to faraway climes, but whether you are looking for a new page-turner for your time on the beach, or just want to curl up on the sofa at home with a new read for some quiet time, Waterstones in Milton Keynes has recommendations aplenty. The bookstore also has some special events coming up, starting with leading real-life Criminologist David Wilson, who visits the store on Thursday, July 14 from 6pm. Wilson is Professor Emeritus of Criminology and the founding director of the Centre for Applied Criminology at Birmingham City University. His incredible career has brought him into contact with nearly every recent serial killer in the country, and he will be sharing those experiences. He will also concentrate on the case at the heart of his brand new book, A Plot To Kill which explores the shocking story of two victims who had been groomed, seduced and mentally tortured by a man in the community who used his position to target and exploit the elderly.
Tess Gerritsen visits Waterstones on July 23
Start a new chapter this summer Very little shocks David, but this case in the sleepy village of Maids Moreton, astounded him. The book will be available to purchase at what is certain to be a fascinating event. Something completely different follows a week later (July 21, from 6pm) with a Manga Extravaganza! Whether you are new to the genre or a longterm fan, there will be plenty for you. Visit the store and browse the many series they have to offer. Check out the games, figurines and products based on popular characters and then give your brain a manga workout with a themed quiz. Wear your best cosplay outfit if you want to – someone is going to win a prize on the day. And on Saturday, July 23, best-selling author Tess Gerritsen will be visiting to sign copies of her new Rizzoli & Isles thriller, Listen To Me.
Tess is also a physician and she brings firsthand knowledge of emergency and autopsy rooms to her work. This is the 13th book in the addictive series and her appearance is a chance for fans to get her squiggle on their copy of the book. On August 4, Bethany Clift will be in conversation talking about her second book, Love & Other Human Errors, an original novel about the chaos of love in all its forms. So something that we can all identify with! “We spend a huge amount of our lives looking for love, if we are lucky enough to find love it sets our world on fire and when we lose love it can literally break our hearts. Everything that I have ever written is about love and everything that I will ever write will have love in it. I wouldn’t want to live without it. Love really does make my world go round,” she told Pulse.
at its core – making use of their brilliant imaginations, of course! This year’s event – on Saturday, July 2 - includes sessions with authors Lauren Child (Clarence Bean: Scram) and Chris Smith (Frankie Best Hates Quests), a ‘Book Club for Super-Spies.’ Local authors will get a look in too – with half a dozen ready to spark creativity in youngsters. The Pollinator Parade looks like it will ‘bee’ brilliant; it’s a celebration of our buzzy pals, with fun facts, a giant bee-hive, and the aforementioned parade followed by educational craft workshops. Kids can even make their own pom-pom bees, while learning about the importance of the insects.
Or, how about spending some time with Professor Frost and his fantastical fleas. This is the biggest little show you’ll ever see, and if you miss the mini menagerie in play you’ll be hopping mad! Elsewhere, cast members from the enchanting new musical Hexwood School of Sorcery will perform songs, and you can meet the cast post-performance. Other things to get stuck into include live art and sand art, a nature quest and a free Gangsta Granny workshop, and Festive Road will bring their larger than life dragon Gwynhaff to the show.

Hands-on interactive displays allow visitors to try their hand at real intelligence-management techniques used at Bletchley Park, and experience some of the daily challenges faced by managers in keeping the operation afloat under wartime conditions. There’s an interactive recreation of the Naval Plotting Room used by naval intelligence officers to track the movements of ships.
A close-up look at wartime machinery, explains more about the processes used to manage the enormous amount of data generated. The force will be with you at Northampton Museum & Art Gallery
Hello
EXHIBITIONS A bington Park Museum is currently hosting the exhibition It’s A Bug’s Life which takes a peek into the lives of the minibeasts and creepy crawlies that inhabit our gardens, fields and green spaces and explores just why they are so important. This is your opportunity to find out how beetles see and hear, how they defend themselves and how to make a beetle home in your garden. You’ll also go home understanding the differences between a butterfly and a moth, and what mud-puddling is. A range of children’s summer workshops are also planned. The Wonderful Wednesdays events include Viking purse making (July 27), a chance to explore the microscopic world with Look Closer (August 3), understanding how

Meanwhile, Fantastic Fridays will include a Tiger Activity Workshop (July 29), Flower Painting (August 12) and the chance to Get Tactile with Textiles (August 19). This must-see show for all Star Wars devotees features toys that have never been exhibited previously, and it is the biggest version of the exhibition ever opened to the public. Entry is free, and the show continues until September 4. While we’re on the subject of Star Wars, on August 16 the Museum is holding a Bricks 4 Kidz Lego Builders Workshop, where youngsters aged five to 12 years old will get to build motorised models from Lego Technic. It’s a chance to bring some of their favourite characters to life, and other themed Lego activities will run simultaneously. May the creativity be with them! Another exhibition starting at the Museum on July 9 (and also continuing until September 4) shines a light on the life and work of one of this country’s best loved author-illustrators, Judith Kerr. Judith, who passed away in 2019, was responsible for the much-loved classic The Tiger Who Came to Tea. This show celebrates the 50th anniversary of that book, and will be an opportunity to view quality facsimiles of Judith’s illustrations from the Seven Stories archive. It will be roar-some. A snapshot of the past
M
ilton Keynes Gallery is currently hosting the exhibition, Vivian Maier: Anthology which explores the remarkable story of a mysterious Chicago based nanny who led a double life as one of the greatest street photographers of the 20th century. Incredibly prolific, this is the first time that Vivian’s work has been exhibited in the UK. During her lifetime she amassed hundreds of thousands of images, but they were kept hidden in a storage locker where they stayed undiscovered until 2007. The MK Gallery show features 140 black and white and colour images, together with film and audio. It is a fabulous look into the everyday life that was, and a true visual treat. The show continues until September 25.

Hello
ACTIVITIES
Go karting to unleash the racing driver within
T
hink back to the last time you lined up alongside another car at the traffic lights. Did you feel the urge to get away from the lights before the other car? Were you like a coiled spring, focused on the red light, anticipating the moment the lights turned green in the hope of leaving the other car to eat your dust? If the answer is yes, then read on to find out how you can unleash the racing driver within. We’re a nation of motorsport fans and the UK is known for producing amazing racing drivers, Formula 1 race winners and world champions, like Sir Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Damon Hill. But high costs and limited access means that going racing is sadly a dream for most of us, which deprives your ‘racing driver within’ from what it craves most, competition, and speed. Fear not, there is an answer. Go-karting is the closest thing you can get to racing for real. In terms of the skills required and sensations experienced, there’s literally no difference. In karting, you sit inches from the floor in a machine built for one purpose, to race. After all, where do the great racing drivers start and learn their craft, in karting.
Up and down the UK you can find many indoor and outdoor go-kart circuits but there is one in Northamptonshire that stands out from the rest. New Bury Festival will offer a fun-packed weekend which will include a BMX daredevil stunt team and the impressive horsemanship of the Devil’s Horsemen
FESTIVAL
brand new event is making its debut this August, and the New Bury Summer Festival is promising a spectacular weekend of entertainment and displays that will thrill the whole family from its base on the outskirts of Leighton Buzzard. Children will have a wonderful time with inflatables, a land train and fairground rides, and they will be able to learn a little of the beauty of animals over at the petting farm. Alpacas and ducks will be around to meet and greet, too. If they need to get rid of some of that extra energy, you might like to accompany the little ‘uns to the stunt bike course, while grown-ups will enjoy Laser Clays and archery or can take to the air while staying firmly rooted on the ground, with a simulator plane ride. A chainsaw carver, glass blower and hedge layer will also be showing off their abilities, and wheelie great fun will come from the BMX daredevil stunt team.
Little mouths will be well catered for too, with a nutritious three-course kids menu, and at least two of their five a day in every main course. The Willen Dragon brings together the welcoming atmosphere of the pub, with modern design details, a range of seating options and BT Sports on the big screen. If you fancy dining al fresco, take a pew in one of the covered and heated areas and private beach-style huts, and let the youngsters loose to roam in the outside play area.
Ray Aliker’s falconry display will give you a bird’s eye view of the area, and the Devil’s Horsemen will be galloping in. You’ll be able to check out lots of lovely bodywork over at the vehicle show ground, with classics and cruisers parked up for inspection, alongside retro machinery and steam engines. It can be hungry work having so much fun, but there’s no need to pack a snack – the site will have plenty of artisan food stalls selling nibbles and bites. And don’t tell the designated driver, but those of a proper age who aren’t getting behind the wheel will be able to sup up – maybe a craft beer, a sweet cider or a cocktail? Aside from the food stalls, an interactive Food Theatre will welcome some ace chefs
from around the UK, and there’s even going to be a cookery school for kids. It’s a decidedly tasty event! Lots of shopping outlets will be vying for attention with small businesses from the surrounding areas on site. Saturday will deliver on the live music front, with artists playing all day long and if you want to make a weekend of it, the camp site will be open. Pitch up and party! The New Bury Summer Festival runs across August 13 & 14. > Get more details and book tickets at newburysummerfestival.co.uk

You could go far with a career in care
When Dana Large saw an advert for a Care Professional for Home Instead Milton Keynes 9 years ago, she never would have thought that 5 promotions later, she would be the Deputy Care Manager. The business was only 1 year old when Dana joined the team of 30, originally based in Olney.
" You have time to build relationships"
Having previously managed pubs and working as an airline stewardess, Dana had a solid understanding of customer service and how to relate to people. She was already working in the care industry when she saw an advert in her local Post Office. Unlike the pressure of her current job where visits were only 15-30 mins and travel time didn’t get factored in, this one stated that visits were a minimum of 1 hour and there was a focus on matching the right Care Professional with the right client. To this day, Dana still talks passionately about their ethos “Home Instead Milton Keynes is just how a care setting should be, you’re seeing the same clients and you have time to build relationships with them”.
Continuing to build on her experience Dana was promoted to Senior Care Professional, Scheduler, Field Care Supervisor and later in 2020, Client Experience Lead. This latest role was all about getting to know the clients inside out and really understanding all of their needs, likes, dislikes, hobbies and generally asking lots and lots of questions. Being a people person, for Dana this was never a problem and having a genuine interest in her clients made the role all the more rewarding. It's this part of Home Instead Milton Keynes that sets them apart from other care companies, the relationship between the client and Care Professional works two ways and it's important that the fit is a good one.
Dana supporting 'Wear A Hat Day' for Brain Tumour Research
Dana’s role today as a Deputy Care Manager means she oversees the running of the care team with the Care Manager, ensuring everything is running smoothly. This involves everything from appraisals, mentoring the care team and generally being a soundboard for any concerns colleagues may have. So whether you’re currently working in the care industry or you’re doing something completely different, you could be the next Dana and have a career in care. Call us today 01908 774333 for an informal chat.

LOCAL NEWS
new report has revealed the urban areas in the UK where residents have the best access to spaces such as gardens, bodies of water and woodland areas. Milton Keynes comes in third for access to wildlife-friendly spaces . Its index score of 79 is over seven times that of other areas, such as Brighton and Hove and Milton Keynes has more than double the amount of publicly accessible green space to be found in cities such as Exeter, Oxford and York. Milton Keynes Council has also announced five new ‘wildlife havens’ that will attract biodiverse plants, insects, birds and other animals. “Residents of Milton Keynes are fortunate enough to have access to an extensive network of green infrastructure, including open water, parkland and woodland,” says the council’s ecologist Andrew Irving. “Emberton Country Park is a great spot for seeing waterfowl, the Blue Lagoon Nature Reserve is important for a host of invertebrates or you can visit one of our ancient woodlands and immerse yourself in nature among the trees. “Wherever you are in Milton Keynes, you’re never far from somewhere to engage with nature.” Even small gardens can become valuable areas for wildlife”, he adds. “You can put up bird boxes and sparrow terraces for nesting, create gaps at the base of your fence for hedgehogs to forage from garden to garden, dig a small wildlife pond to support amphibians or build a habitat pile or minibeast hotel.”
Back to nature… and where better than in our green city Its green space and parkland totals more than 6,000 acres. Now Milton Keynes is confirmed as having more wildlife-friendly space than almost any other town or city in the UK. ‘Wherever you are in Milton Keynes, you’re never far from somewhere to engage with nature’
The study was created by bird food specialist Ark Wildlife. “Spending time watching or walking in nature has been shown to benefit both mind and body,” says Ark Wildlife’s founder and wildlife expert Sean McMenemy. “Sitting quietly in fresh air or walking in open spaces calms the mind and body, balancing our
physiology and promoting production of positive hormones” A study commissioned by the National Trust found that listening to woodland sounds, such as birdsong, led to a 30% increase in feelings of relaxation. “Time spent in nature is never wasted,” Mr McMenemy says.

LOCAL HISTORY
A thoroughly modern history! Isn't it brilliant to finally be able to say, 'we are a city'? Milton Keynes was one of eight places given the civic honour to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, and is now the fourth city in the region, with the Cabinet Office declaring MK is ‘the pinnacle of the national post-war planning movement, rebuilding the nation and accommodating its growing population.’
The War Veteran by Ronald Rae
M
ilton Keynes is a young, energetic place, which many of those settling here to raise families or operate businesses declare to be ‘the city of dreams’ and a ‘can do’ place, and it has long forged its own path. Quite simply, while outsiders sometimes refer to MK with a sneer and a scoff, us Keynesians get on with the business of getting on. And what a lot we have achieved in our 55 year history. Sammy Jones looks at how things have developed... > When it was set out, the new town of Milton Keynes was built around six principles; one of them stating ‘we want to be an attractive city.’ We might still be known as the ‘concrete town’ by the uninformed, but the wider area of Milton Keynes is leafy and gorgeous, with well in excess of 20 million trees having been planted here. The Parks Trust maintains more than 6000 acres of our parkland and green space, and everyone in the city is within half a mile of green space. > A campaign was launched in the 1970s for a new hospital for the new town, with the slogan ‘Milton Keynes is Dying for a Hospital.’ But it wasn't until 1984 that Milton Keynes University Hospital saw its first patients - until that time, residents were served by Northampton General Hospital and Stoke Mandeville. Today the hospital has around 550 beds, employs more than 4000 staff and treats around 400,000 patients annually. > The Church of Christ the Cornerstone was the first ecumenical city centre church in the whole of the UK. Lord Campbell of Eskan, the first Chairman of Milton Keynes Development Corporation – and the man whose name was taken by the city park – cut the turf on the site of the building in May 1990.
MK Gallery originally opened in 1999

> We know how to rock (and roll), and during its four decade history, The National Bowl, on the site of a former clay pit, has played host to artists including Michael Jackson, Guns N' Roses, Black Sabbath,

Queen, Foo Fighters, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Take That and The Prodigy. The venue itself was based on the Hollywood Bowl. > Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher opened Milton Keynes Shopping Centre on September 25, 1979 – at the time, she had been resident at No10 Downing Street for just 10 months. The centre took five years to build and cost almost £24 million. In its opening year, its fusion of steel and glass bagged it a Structural Steel Design Award. ‘Not since the construction of Crystal Palace has England seen metal and glass architecture on this scale,’ noted the judges. It is estimated that more than three quarters of a billion visits have been made since it opened, and today the centre:mk employs more than 5000 people. > Our grid road system is so revered that it attracts interest from far and wide; people from as far away as China visit Milton Keynes to see how the city works and to learn from it, and to replicate elsewhere. Roundabouts? We've got a few. Actually, at the last count we had 130 of them, and incredibly, Milton Keynes has more bridges than can be found in Venice!

> The impressive Stadium MK was opened in November 2007 by Her Majesty the Queen. It has 30,530 seats. A 304 bedroom hotel is also on site. The stadium is the home of Milton Keynes Dons Football Club, which was formed in 2004. While the stadium was being built, the team played their home games at The Hockey Stadium in CMK. That stadium was demolished and the space now accommodates Network Rail. > Speaking of big businesses, Milton Keynes is a hub for thriving companies, and for business start-ups. And we are home to some big names; Marshall Amplification, Red Bull Racing and The Open University all have their headquarters here. > Milton Keynes Theatre opened its doors for the first time on October 4, 1999. That build took 500,000 man hours, and more than 25,000 tonnes of concrete! It has given a platform to community groups and hosted the biggest shows in theatre-land. The late Sir Roger Moore, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, Sheridan Smith and Joan Collins are among the A-listers who have trod the MK Theatre boards. Pantomime has delivered its own stars, with Priscilla Presley, Mickey Rooney and Diversity providing seasonal entertainment.
Part of the building includes colour chart themes from a 1970s Habitat catalogue. Habitat founder Terence Conran was a consultant to the MK Development Corporation. > The UK’s first multiplex opened in Central Milton Keynes in November 1985. In the original proposals, The Point design was going to incorporate a six-screen multiplex, but this was later amended to 10 screens. The attendance goal for the first year was 760,000 visitors. The Point achieved 1,050,000 – more than any cinema in the UK had achieved for 15 years – including Leicester Square! > The Xscape complex has been a popular attraction since 2000 and is home to the UK's first indoor ski slope. The length of the indoor ski slope is 170m and the building is 44m high. > Everyone knows that Milton Keynes is home to a family of concrete cows. Artist Liz Leyh worked with local children to create them. The figures in situ at Bancroft are replicas though – the originals are found grazing at the Milton Keynes Museum, which means they are back home; they were made here in 1978.
> A neighbour of the theatre, MK Gallery was launched the same year, and its history is rich with many acclaimed exhibitions, including shows featuring works by Andy Warhol, Jeremy Deller and Stubbs. The gallery reopened in 2019 Starshop robots are a familiar following a major renovation sight around the city and expansion.
> As Milton Keynes began to grow, it became clear that it was going to need a train station to match – Milton Keynes Central railway station was opened on May 14, 1982, although its official opening followed three days later, with HRH Prince Charles doing the honours.
Her Majesty the Queen and the HRH Prince Philip visited Milton Keynes in 2007 to officially open the Stadium MK
Bowl-ed over - Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne on stage
> Those who moan that Milton Keynes is devoid of culture have clearly never taken in the area – we have more than 230 pieces of public art. They include Elisabeth Frink’s famous Black Horse (1978), The Whisper (1984) by Andre Wallace, The Octo (1980) by Wendy Taylor and The Space Between (Eilis O'Connell, 1992) which is located in Campbell Park and based on ancient Celtic boundary markers. The Frog Clock (Kit Williams, 2000) in Midsummer Place shopping centre is one of Britain's biggest animated clocks and weighs a whopping four tonnes. > Getting around in Milton Keynes is a breeze – thanks to a network of cycle and pedestrian routes that enable easy movement. The network is said to be around 170 miles in length and is known as The Redway. > Hundreds of the Starship bots zip around MK delivering groceries to us – from essential goods to that forgotten bottle of wine to have with dinner. People thought MK was crazy, but in the four years since they debuted here, they've expanded into many other areas. And in a thoroughly modern MK way, our successful bid for city status was sent off using one of the robots!

Women who love to sing Women who love to sing are being encouraged to join the award-winning A Cappella chorus, Junction 14.
T
he barbershop style chorus has hit all the right notes since setting up in 1987. Now, with growing demand for their work, Junction 14 is hoping to find more women to join their ranks who want to sing for fun, competition and charity. The four-part harmony group, which is part of the Ladies’ Association of British Barbershop Singers, LABBS is headed up by musical director, Hannah Washington. Awards include the recent success at the MK Arts Festival in March where their performance won the Barbershop Chorus Category for the fourth consecutive year. Chorus spokesperson Val Hutchinson said: “It is wonderful to be back performing and we were very proud to have won the award. We give everyone a warm welcome and it is like a big family where we support one another. It is a just a joy to be part of Junction 14.” Junction 14 which is a not-for-profit organisation has supported many charities through its paid performances and collection buckets. The Milton Keynes branch of The
Motor Neurone Disease is their 2022’s nominated charity. Val said: “This is a charity close to our hearts as this terrible disease has affected members and, as in previous years, we hope to raise muchneeded funds.” Their variety of performances range from birthday parties and anniversaries to singing at the railway station at Milton Keynes. In 2014 they even appeared at the House of Lords to celebrate the retirement of Alice Maynard, at the end of her six-year term as Chair of the charity SCOPE. Alice, a baritone with Junction 14, who was made a CBE in the same year, invited the chorus to perform at the event to mark her achievements. Interested in joining the chorus? Members, who must be over 18, do not need any experience just a love of music and able to make a commitment. Rehearsals are on Thursdays, 7.30 pm at Shenley Brook End School, Milton Keynes, MK57ZT. >> To find out more visit: www.junction14.org or email: enquiries@junction14.org For bookings email: bookings@junction14.org

PULSE PICS
It was a unique event and Milton Keynes celebrated accordingly; with street parties, parades and lots and lots of bunting! Here’s a little look back at four very special days when we celebrated HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee...

The splendid sight of the beacon illumination in Campbell Park – one of around 3000 beacons that were lit at 9.45pm on Thursday, June 2 in a fiery night that lit up the country.
This piece of unrivalled mower art was the result of a couple of hours work in Downhead Park by father and son Roger and Charles Costelloe.
Newport Pagnell celebrated the Platinum Jubilee with a huge vintage event which took over the town – and included a superb flypast from a Lancaster. Pics: Sammy Jones

PULSE PICS
Despite all of the festivities, HM could still be found ‘hanging around’ in Wolverton – look at this colourful creation.
Check out this wonderful royal procession, and then look again! It’s actually a model of HM the Queen’s horse-drawn carriage, as created by members of the Milton Keynes Model Railway Society – proof that small is beautiful! James Woodley from the MKMRS said the jubilee decorations were the work of a handful of members, and took a month to complete. Street parties and events were held across Milton Keynes, and of course sweet treats were on the menu; HM adorned the cake in Great Linford, while at MK Museum the biscuits were the crowning glory!

NETSET
Main image: Dress by Monsoon £80
Things are really hotting up outside (seems the sun got all our memos), so it’s time to rummage (through your wardrobe at home first, obviously) for the summer-ready cutouts, light/sheer fabrics, billowy blouses, skirts and dresses befitting all this heat.
Whether you’ll be enjoying it on home soil, or following the herd down to Greece (...) on holiday, loving the 90’s trend is still key; think halter tops, strappy tops, the miniest of miniskirts, and lots of straight leg denim. But what else is pretty (and) cool right now? Who’d have guessed but: crochet. Spied on the catwalks at Saint Laurent, Supriya Lele and more, were knitted, netted and wovenwear - from versatile two-pieces (which you can find at River Island) to stand out dresses (see Matalan and Monsoon), and basics elevated by a bit of fringing or sparkling yarn (found everywhere). Worn well, the look’s far from ‘granny-ish’ and easy to include among the items you already own, too. Just try weaving in one crocheted accessory with your current fave summer ‘fit - a bucket hat, a clutch or tote bag, or Primark’s cute knitted collar.
River Island £18
Right for circling the shops or the pool, you also can’t go wrong wearing a hint of mesh, lace or broderie anglaise - but join the jet set in a net set and you’ll find that keeping your outfit super cool is a (literal) breeze. Oliver Bonas £69.50 >>

RRP: £55 Born in Roma Donna is a floral oriental that takes from jasmine, and adds a little extra luxury with vanilla bourbon. Valentino says it represents Rome street culture. Anything capable of giving us a little bit of the romance that oozes from one of the most beautiful cities in the world is a winner with us. Experimental and captivating in equal measure, Born in Roma has a bottle to match, making use of Valentino’s famous stud pattern. For those who lead, not follow. RRP: £56.50
Jean Paul Gaultier’s Le Male EDP is an elegant woody oriental trail that promises to disorient the senses in the best possible way. It is masculine and marvellous. ere’s a controversial thing. If they aren’t interfering with your best garden displays, would you consider letting gastropods live free in your garden? Slugs and snails have long been treated with contempt by green-fingered types, but things are changing; The Royal Horticultural Society has had a rethink regarding slugs and snails, and they are no longer being classed as pests. Instead they will be promoted as a positive part of a garden’s ecosystem, and rightly so; those great big slugs that take our attention as they slowly slide around our outside spaces actually munch their way through dead and decaying plant material and other debris. You might want to think of them as important mini compost machines! Aside from clearing the old plants, they are predated on by other garden residents, who are themselves struggling to survive. Hedgehog numbers are declining, so too are many of our garden bird species. And both are partial to slugs and snails. Frogs and toads gobble them up too. Slugs have their place in our outside spaces, and so too do snails. It’s also a misconception to think that all snails and slugs attack your green stuff, but of course there are a proportion that do, and if your cabbages have been catastrophically munched, or your blooms devoured, it can be devastating - especially after so much hard work has gone into growing them. A ban on slug pellets was brought in earlier this year – they often contain metaldehyde, which doesn’t just stop the slug dead, it is also harmful to birds, hedgehogs and even dogs.

Finding the right energy efficient windows for your character property

inding the right energy efficient UPVC system for traditional or heritage projects, isn’t always easy. Striking the balance between design, aesthetics, energy efficiency and noise reduction while keeping a traditional look can be difficult to navigate. Design

It’s becoming second nature for companies to follow an eco-conscious route, pressured by consumers and laws to ensure the environment is at the forefront of decision making. Interior design is no different, with homeowners, interior designers, architects and students all having a responsibility to design with an eco-friendly approach in mind. To achieve truly sustainable interior design, many aspects should be considered - composition, origin, transportation, waste reduction, energy efficiency and longevity. But being sustainable doesn’t rule out buying new or having nice things in your home. You don’t solely have to be reusing and upcycling to be environmentally mindful. Designers Guild’s eco-friendly range of vibrant matt emulsion, eggshell and floor paints are water-based and low or very low in VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds, that contribute to atmospheric pollution). VOCs in paints are usually solvents, which evaporate as paint dries and release pollutants into the environment. Waterbased paints are kinder to the environment and enable you to clean your brushes and other equipment simply using warm, soapy water. No need for harsh chemicals. are washable (including their chalky matt emulsion) and extremely durable. All offer excellent coverage, adhesion and flow, meaning fewer coats are needed, when compared with other premium paints. They are also quick drying meaning your decorator can finish sooner. They are manufactured in the UK so have a lower carbon footprint than internationally manufactured paints and the paint tins are made using 50% recycled steel which can be recycled again after use.1 As a major contributor to the textile industry, Osborne and Little play their part by embracing new eco-friendly technologies. They recently introduced ‘Ocean’ - their first collection of fabrics made by processing plastic bottles into chips and then filament yarn. The yarn is spun, textured and woven into beautifully soft fabrics. In addition, 10% of this collection’s first year’s turnover
is to be donated to support the One Ocean Foundation. This funds amazing projects throughout the world, reducing pollution and returning the oceans to the cleanliness they deserve.2 Indirectly, Colefax and Fowler, a British company distributing luxury furnishing fabrics and wallpapers across the world has been supporting the effort to lessen its impact on the environment. The company has recently achieved the Planet Mark certification and in doing so has set a target to reduce its carbon emissions by 5% annually. Through Planet Mark the company has also protected an area of endangered rainforest thanks to Cool Earth, a charity working alongside rainforest communities to halt deforestation. Its pledge through Cool Earth goes directly towards supporting the Asháninka community in Central Peru.

THE ARTS They have also helped the Eden Project – an educational charity building connections with each other and the living world, exploring how we can work together towards a better future.3 In addition to the big names doing their bit at corporate level, there are plenty of ways for us to shop conscientiously for our homes both locally and online. Whatever product you’re thinking of buying, be sure to ask the company or use the search option online to explore what eco-friendly products are available. At the Walls and Floors tile showroom in Kettering, the Yuri Sand range of recycled tiles have a raw, industrial feel that emulate the look of salvaged metals and concrete, with small details in their appearance like abrasions and oxidisation. In light shades of beige, they are mottled and metallic, creating comforting feelings of warmth and relaxation; you can almost feel the soft sand beneath your feet. They are made from 90% recycled raw materials, water and minerals, with an eco-friendly manufacturing process. With no compromise on quality or finish they are the ideal choice if you’re keen to have a more sustainably designed bathroom or kitchen.4 At Coreside Nursery, you’ll find pretty Ocean Plastic Plant Pots, made from 100% reclaimed fishing rope and nets from UK oceans. The Braided Rug Company make their rugs from recycled plastic whilst Homescapes Online have a colourful range of rugs made from 100% cotton, sourced from recycled fabric offcuts. Whether you chose to adorn your home with recycled glass accessories, curtains made from plastic bottles or washable paints originating in the UK, rest assured that it is completely possible to redesign your home in a way that not only reduces your impact on the environment but could also be instrumental in improving it for future generations to come. www.designersguild.com 2www.osborneandlittle.com www.colefax.com 4www.wallsandfloors.co.uk

SPOTLIGHT ON
FABIAN PEREZ Enter the atmospheric world of Fabian Perez
F
or those that love the craft and beauty of figurative painting, the work of Fabian Perez will stop you in your tracks. Fabian Perez takes inspiration from his fascinating upbringing in the back streets of Argentina, but his artistic skill creates sophisticated, seductive art that has led him to huge international success. Born in the capital Buenos Aires in 1967, Fabian had a tumultuous childhood. His father was a charismatic man with a difficult life, owning a number of brothels and illegal nightclubs which meant he was frequently running from the law. But the scenes he witnessed as a young boy during this time left a deep impression and led to a lifelong fascination with the underground world of city nightlife. He often draws on his father for inspiration when painting male figures, as the brooding cool guy at the bar and he remembers the beautiful women he would see in the clubs or dancing the tango. It was Fabian’s artistic mother that encouraged him to pursue his talents and ultimately his creativity led him to a better life. Incredibly considering his talent, he has never received any formal training in painting. He developed his style and skillset over a number of years through a deep love of art and
painting portraits of his friends and family. In particular he is influenced by artists such as Picasso, Sargent and Cézanne – but his work is unmistakably his own, with its distinctive interplay between shadows and light. Fabian has named his style or art movement, called Neo-Emotionalism, which he says places emphasis on emotion and dramatic narrative, “I do not want to paint on canvas, I want to let my feelings become shapes on the canvas without thinking about the results – letting my experiences tell their own story with each brushstroke” – Fabian Perez.
Fabian’s success has led him to become one of the world’s most collected artists as well as receiving commissions to paint a number of famous people including Pope Francis, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Al Pacino. In a local connection, he recently made an appearance at the family home of Princess Diana, Althorp House in Northampton, where he unveiled a portrait of Lady Countess Spencer.

MK MAYOR
Celebration time for the city Our first catch-up with the 50th Mayor of Milton Keynes, Cllr Amanda Marlow
T
he start of my Mayoral year began with the momentous news that on our fourth attempt, HM The Queen has granted Milton Keynes city status. I cannot begin to describe the elation and excitement that has been shared far and wide, with congratulations being sent to us the world over. So far my first month in office has already proven to be incredibly busy, with celebrations held over the long bank holiday weekend to mark HM the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. On 2nd June, together with MyMiltonKeynes, the MK Rose Trust, the Parks Trust and the Mayor’s Office, we kicked off the start of the Platinum Jubilee with a parade along Midsummer Boulevard. Our city came out
for Her Majesty, with hundreds of people taking part in the parade, and scores of spectators waving flags, cheering and joining us at the MK Rose in Campbell Park, to give thanks for 70 years on the throne. It was incredible to see the many organisations who took part in it, marching with our armed forces and cadets. My heartfelt thanks go to Melanie Beck and her team at MyMiltonKeynes for taking on the lions share of the organisation, Mayor’s Chaplain Andrew Geary for performing the Jubilee Thanksgiving Service at The Rose, the RBL for their parade leading and also to MK Chorale for their incredible singing of Zadok the Priest and Jerusalem. The jubilee has been celebrated right across the city by you all in the form of street parties, concerts, big community picnics and barbecues, jubilee fetes, afternoon tea parties, and also with the lighting of beacons up and
The Thanksgiving Service held at the MK Rose
down the country, including many here in Milton Keynes; with events taking place in Campbell Park, Hanslope, Emberton, Olney and at Milton Keynes Museum to name a few in our area. The celebrations culminated with a chorale concert ‘Crowning Glory’ to mark the end of the Jubilee Weekend held at Milton Keynes Theatre. It was a joyful event filled with beautiful singing and music provided by the MK Chorale, the Alina Orchestra and guests. It was a fitting finale to a weekend filled with celebration, and it has been wonderful to see the love that we have for our Monarch. Each year, on the 1st - 7th June is Volunteers Week which celebrates and recognises the incredible work that volunteers provide for charities and organisations across the country, and of course right here in MK. Volunteering comes in many guises, and I am always struck by the amount of personal time and commitment that people are willing to give to make something worthwhile and to help others. Volunteers help to make a difference to not only other people’s lives, but also to their own. We also celebrate Carers Week (6th-12th June) which shines a light on the invaluable contribution that carers make to families and communities throughout the UK. Finally, I would just like to remind you that we are fortunate to have the UEFA Women’s Euros coming to Stadium:MK in the form of three Group B games and a semi-final match. I am sure that this tournament will prove to be inspirational to many girls and women across Milton Keynes, and that hopefully we will see a surge of women and girls taking up football locally. MPS OUT & ABOUT
Milton Keynes is now a city! and innovative noise cameras could be trialled
S
ince my last column we have received the brilliant news that Milton Keynes was finally made a city as part of Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. I am absolutely delighted we have been recognised for the role we have played throughout history from Wolverton Works to Bletchley Park and into the future by leading the way on innovation and technology. Thank you to everybody across Milton Keynes who played such an important role in making sure our bid was a success. And as part of that I want to congratulate some truly remarkable MK residents on receiving honours in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list – Dame Ann Limb who was awarded a damehood, DREAMSAI founder Lakshmana Kastala who received a BEM and Odette Mould on her MBE for her work with Harry’s Rainbow. Thank you all for the work you do for MK and our country.
Ben meets the team at Keeping Kids Off The Streets
week and are open to youngsters from the age of 4 through to 18. They are always looking for more volunteers and fundraising support so if you can offer any help please do get in touch with the team.
New innovative noise cameras will help to ensure communities can enjoy their public and residential spaces
Noise Camera Trial Application Submitted - A number of constituents have emailed asking me to apply for the Government’s new noise camera trials to help stop rowdy motorists revving their engines unnecessarily or using illegal exhausts. I am aware this has been a particular problem for residents in Bradwell Common and those near the Network Rail car park which is often used for car meets. Since the technology is just in design phase, MPs are currently being invited to submit applications to trial new innovative noise cameras in their local area, helping to ensure communities can enjoy their public and residential spaces peacefully. The technology, backed by £300,000, can automatically detect when vehicles are breaking legal noise requirements, helping provide police and local authorities with the tools and evidence to take action against drivers who flout noise laws. Police have existing powers, including the ability to issue fines, but currently have trouble gathering evidence. Ahead of submitting my application I met with Thames Valley Police, who are aware of the issue, and worked with them to put the application together to give us the best chance of success. Free Boxing Sessions For Young People In MK - I was invited to meet Karl Hanif and his team at Keeping Kids Off The Streets who provide free boxing sessions to young people across Milton Keynes. The sessions are run in Great Linford, Newport Pagnell, Broughton, Kiln Farm, Olney and New Bradwell throughout the 60
Visiting The Community Payback Scheme In Downs Barn I paid a visit to the Community Payback scheme currently taking part in Downs Barn to see the work they are doing with offenders in Milton Keynes. Run by HM Prison and Probation Service who work with local Parish Councils, charities, schools and other organisations the scheme aims to get offenders involved in local projects to benefit the community. These can include projects such as litter picks, working in charity shops, helping to set up allotments at schools and other schemes. The programme I visited in Downs Barn involved maintaining the green spaces and I was able to meet some of the offenders who were currently working on clearing the Redways and footpaths of overgrown trees and hedges. MK Council
The city of Milton Keynes I t has been an exciting and eventful month here in Milton Keynes, as we have officially been granted city status. Her Majesty the Queen named Milton Keynes a city as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. This civic honour will put Milton Keynes on the map as a forward-thinking, innovative, and unique place to do business. It will boost our local economy and our local communities.
• Mitigating the rise in child poverty and the impact of the
Although young in age, Milton Keynes is rich in history and boasts over 1,000 listed buildings and significant places such as Bletchley Park. We have called Milton Keynes a city for many years, but it’s nice to know that it is now official. Thank you to everybody who supported the bid – we can’t wait to have an official ceremony to mark city status later this year!
Each year we will implement policies and tasks that will help us reach these aims. The Progressive Alliance will work for the benefit of residents, while ensuring the Council continues to deliver high-quality core services and provides support for those who need it. Our new Council Plan is an exciting look forward at what the city of Milton Keynes can achieve in the next four years.
Our Four-Year Plan Last month, councillors agreed the Council Plan which outlines the authority’s corporate priorities for the next four years. The Progressive Alliance wants to transform the new city into a place that is thriving, progressive and sustainable. We will also be working towards key outcomes that we hope to achieve by 2026, such as:
Those who want to find out more about the Council Plan can do so by visiting www.milton-keynes.gov.uk.

MUSIC
The sounds of summer
Traditionally, it’s bird song that you hear in Campbell Park, but in the coming weeks, our feathered friends will be up against some stiff competition from the world of chart-bothering players who will be entertaining the masses on the green, green grass of the new city. Sammy Jones has the lowdown on the big gigs... Who: Craig David presents T5S with Ella Henderson, Nathan Dawe & Emily Nash When: Friday, July 22 Forged in his Miami penthouse, TS5 began its days as the most exclusive pre-party around, and though Craig is now based back on British soil, TS5 has evolved into a worldwide success. In a career more than two decades long Craig has kept dance floors humming and venues pumping with his ace ability at bringing the tunes, whether collaborating or out on his own. His new album ‘22’ is a celebration of those 22 years on the music scene and you’ll be able to hear some of those tracks at this date too. We still remember watching Craig David on his first visit to Milton Keynes where we caught him on stage with the John Dankworth Jazz Orchestra many years ago. We interviewed him then, and we’ve interviewed him since and he remains one of the nicest blokes in the business. And musically? He’s the gift that just keeps on giving. Beat mash up: Rewind, Fill Me In, Ain’t Givin’ Up, When The Bassline Drops, 16, Who You Are
Craig David
Who: Rag'n'Bone Man with Jade Bird and Charlotte Jane When: Saturday, July 16 In 2017 Rag'n'Bone Man’s colossal debut album Human turned him into a household name. The release smashed into the top spot on the album chart the week of release (eventually going 4 x platinum) and became the fastest selling album by a male artist for the decade! But with that voice and song pedigree to match, it’s not such a surprise... A little over a year ago and the man who made face tattoos cool (we always said they could be) returned to the fray with Life By Misadventure, which offered up the fabulously catchy, brilliant rock track All You Ever Wanted. We’re hoping to stow away in the flight cases after the Campbell Park gig so we can see him at The Fonda Theatre in L.A. later in the year. What an awesome, intimate date that will be. Mind you, MK is going to be sweet too. The hit list: Giant, Human, Skin, All You Ever Wanted Rag'n'Bone Man

Abba Symphonic at Campbell Park
Who: ABBA Symphonic with Joe Bygraves When: Friday, July 15 Everyone knows the songs, but you’ve probably not heard them delivered quite like this; with leading star performers from the West End production of Mamma Mia! and a quite brilliant rock band, together with a full orchestra. Frankly, it’s enough to put everyone in the mood for dance, and when you get the chance...well, you know what happens then. You can dance, you can jive, in fact ABBA Symphonic demands it. Split with the Money, Money, Money and say Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! a ticket. You’ll be pleased you did. Top of the Pops: Voulez-Vous, Super Trouper, Lay All Your Love On Me, Chiquitita, I Have A Dream, Does Your Mother Know
Who: Paloma Faith with James Morrison and Katie Kittermaster When: Sunday, July 17
Who: Reggae Land 2022 with Julian Marley & The Uprising and Shaggy When: Saturday July 30 & Sunday, July 31
The inimitable Miss Faith brings some glamour to the central MK site as part of The Age of Optimism tour. The double platinum, BRIT Award winner is an all round ace these days; putting her music aside, she has coached others to success on The Voice and The Voice Kids, and has a flourishing acting career - including showing out in the Batman prequel series Pennyworth as Bet Sykes. “Acting is like a holiday for me,” she laughs, “It’s so nice to do something collaborative, and also play someone totally not like me. Sykes is kickass, doesn’t give a toss. Whereas I’m super sensitive to what everyone is feeling. When I am Bet I get to kill people and beat them up without sentimentality!” But this MK visit is all about the music - and there are five albums of material to choose from. Fellow BRIT award-winner James Morrison is the special guest. Earlier this year, he issued his Greatest Hits album. Not for James just a boring gathering of old songs though - he reworked and refreshed all of his familiar tracks, as he explained: “Many of my songs over time have taken on a new life of their own: new emotions, new meanings and new feels both from the way I perform then and in the way my band has played them. I’ve also become a better singer and inhabit the songs in a different way now.” Crowd pleasers: (PF): Picking Up The Pieces, Can’t Rely On You, Only Love Can Hurt Like This (JM): You Give Me Something, Wonderful World
This is the ultimate in line-ups with Julian Marley & The Uprising and Shaggy topping a bill that is rich in great stuff, with others including Chaka Demus & Pliers, Inner Circle, The Duelers and Third World. And Musical Youth and Aswad and David Rodigan. And Dub Pistols Soundsystem and Gentleman’s Dub Club... and plenty more. It’s not every day you get to enjoy Bob Marley’s son doing his thing on your doorstep and he’ll be fresh from dates in Switzerland, France and Italy when he takes control here. It’s going to be something else – and a chance to surely hear the new track Don’t Ruin My World (Soil of Life) at the show. Enjoy a weekend of wow-some with the absolute best. Book the Monday off work now or regret later. Music to groove to: (JM): Boom Draw, Awake, Just in Time (Shaggy): It Wasn’t Me, Boombastic, Tease Me (Aswad): Don’t Turn Around and too many more to list
Paloma Faith
Who: Steps with Louise Redknapp, Liberty X, Gareth Gates & Dean McCullough When: Friday, July 29 Be honest, everyone loves a bit of Steps and if you say you don’t, you are fibbing! Claire, Fay, Lee, H and Lisa were on fire in the noughties and then called time on their feel good fun – have racked up 10 smash hit singles and three multi-platinum albums. But 2017 saw the quintet get back down to the business of musicmaking and they’ve since delivered two new elpees to sate their still ravenous audience. Expect the perfect blend of old meets new when they stage step in Campbell Park.

Return of the riffs!
Nebula make their first appearance at The Craufurd Arms
F
ans of the hard and the heavy are in for a month of marvellous stuff at The Craufurd Arms, and things start the way they mean to go on; with supersized riffs and grooves at the hands of Orange Goblin, writes Sammy Jones. The last time we spent the night in the company of the DIY daredevils they were on the road with Corrosion of Conformity in a pre-pandemic world. Can you remember that far back?! The heavy hounds are now eyeing up their 30th anniversary which is only a couple of years away. What a party that is going to be! But what’s the secret to their success? “We obviously argue and disagree occasionally, but there has always been a mutual respect in the band,” reckons frontman Ben Ward, “We’ve never taken ourselves too seriously and always maintained a sense of humour, which you need in the music business.” Always rough and ready, the London-based noise makers visit the Wolverton music hub on Friday, July 8, with support from King Creature and Blind River. The midweek hump will be strangely absent on Wednesday, July 20 when Nebula makes their Wolverton debut. 1999s debut player To the Center was issued through Sub Pop Records, but after several elpees the band went on hiatus in 2010. It’s fair to say that they didn’t rush back; only pooling their resources again in 2017, although founder Eddie Glass and longtime bassist Tom Davies are now joined by Mondo Generator drummer Mike Amster. The desert psychedelic fuzzsters are on the road in support of their new opus, Transmission From Mothership Earth, which is on its way to us courtesy of the Heavy Psych Sounds label. If I didn’t shop at HPS I’d possibly have a decent bank balance, but they have so much magnificent vinyl with all the colours of the rainbow I can’t help myself... It’s a sweetie shop for record heads. Nebula are always a mighty proposition, but this show will deliver double deliciousness – with the welcome return of The Atomic Bitchwax. 64

It could be around seven years ago that AB last stormed through the Keynes, but they left their mark with one of the most balls-tothe-wall rock ‘n’ roll evenings in memory. From New Jersey to the new city, Chris Kosnik, Bob Pantella and Garrett Sweeny will blow your mind. If you know your musical ‘family trees’ you’ll know that they are all former or current members of the magnificent Monster Magnet, and the Bitchwax are just as splendid. It’s the opening date of their UK tour, and we need to set the audience appreciation bar high. We’ve waited a long time to get gigs like this back on local soil, so let’s enjoy the Saturday night vibes in a midweek setting. See you down the front.

ther shows worth checking in for this July include American death metal deliverers Gatecreeper, who play The Craufurd on Sunday, July 10 with support from Urne and local noise bringers Casketfeeder. THEATRE
Him & Me: Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice
Bubbles and tickling the ivories, mind games and terrible performances. Sammy Jones has details of July’s hottest theatre tickets...
D
on’t forget that David Walliams’ Billionaire Boy is at MK Theatre (June 30-July 3). It’s a modern story that shows why all the riches in the world can’t buy real friendship. Of course it’s all wrapped up in Walliams’ quite brilliant storytelling, which is a little bit bonkers too! The venue then goes dark for a couple of weeks, but what better way to welcome back audiences than with Strictly favourites Anton Du Beke and Giovanni Pernice? The longest-serving professional turned judge is joined by 2021’s trophy winner (July 17) in a show they’ve called Him & Me. Anton & Giovanni will be joined by a cast of svelte movers and tunesmiths, delivering a show to enthral Strictly fans. The Ballroom King The Pla y and Jive Master are in Goes W That rong demand and will need to be nifty on their feet with two performances on the day – at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. Jools Holland has just been back in play on BBC 2 with the 46th series of his Later With... sessions. His ability at the keys to step in with artists from across the musical spectrum has long given us mixed emotions; part awe, part jealousy! As the UK’s most popular pianist and bandleader, the man who boasts an OBE has performed and recorded with some of the most talented musicians and songwriters in the world, including Eric Clapton, the late
George Harrison and Luther Vandross, Sting, BB King and Paul Weller. But for Jools nothing feels quite as good as when he is leading his 20-piece Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, and incredibly he has been touring these shows for the past quarter century. Milton Keynes is regular spot on the itinerary, and some of you will recall his Campbell Park shows. This time, he’s sticking with his now familiar visit to MK Theatre. The vocal prowess of Ruby Turner and soulful sounds of Louise Marshall will also feature. Mind control and psychological illusion follows with Derren Brown (July 19-July 23). This is Derren’s first brand new show in six years and what to expect is a closely guarded secret. But if you are one of the thousands who have sat open-mouthed at the theatre during one of his previous visits, you’ll know that it’ll be nothing short of amazing. It’s edge of your seat viewing, and he’s got the Olivier nominations and awards to back that up. The show following will be one big let down – but that’s exactly why you should take a ticket! The Play That Goes Wrong (July 25-30) is coming back to town for more mishaps, mis-timed entrances, and calamities concerning stage props. You’ll laugh ‘til it hurts with this slice of brilliance. ‘The Cornley Drama Society are putting on a 1920s murder mystery, but as the title suggests, everything that can go wrong....does! As the accident prone thesps battle on against all the odds to reach their final curtain call, hilarious results ensue!’ If the cast really do screw up while trying to get things wrong the right way, things would really go wrong in a bad way, if you see what we mean! Last up for July at MK Theatre, a one night stand (July 31) with Some Guys Have All the Luck – The Rod Stewart Story. From Handbags & Gladrags to Stay with Me and Twisting The Night Away, fans will be

At The Stables, Two Mr Ps in a Pod(cast) have been doing great business – their show at the Wavendon venue (July 2) has been selling so swiftly that the siblings have been snapped up for a second date on July 23. This is real life through the lens, and Vivian was incredibly prolific – recording thousands of photographs during her lifetime, which now serve as a remarkable look at life in New York and Chicago in the 1950s and 1960s. She wasn’t even a snapper by trade – she was a children’s nanny! An amazing story, and an equally amazing show. Development: mkgallery.org

Reflected Greatness
T
he Global Warming Debate rages on. Does it exist? Is humanity responsible for it? Will it still rain on UK bank holidays? Regardless of the truth, we do seem to be in receipt of rather a lot of sunny or dry days recently. So I thought of an idea which might be of great benefit to car owners regardless of whether Global Warming is real or the invention of overpaid marketing people. Some may say that it is a stroke of genius, but I am happy merely knowing it will help many. Have you ever opened a car door on a sunny day and been greeted by what seems like air escaping from a furnace? You wait for the initial blast of heat to pass before getting in. Even when moving the temperature build up is intense. It is all that glass. It makes the car behave like a greenhouse. The only differences seem to be the possession of wheels and no straggly tomato plants growing on the back seat. If you are having a conservatory built, for a little extra (okay, a lot extra – I don’t want to come over as a salesman) you can have special glass installed that reflects much of the sun’s rays so as to avoid turning it into an oven on sunny days. What we need to do is use the same glass in cars.
The problem, as I see it, is that the hot air released by opening a car door goes into the atmosphere. Forget cows with their bottom burps – wafts of hot air from cars are far worse. Remove those waves of heat and you remove a contribution to Global Warming, should it be a thing (which it may or may not be – I don’t want to attract the ire of anyone on either side of the argument – although I am beginning to suspect that I may already have upset almost everyone by daring to have an opinion either way). But back to my great idea. In addition, the paint on cars can be formulated to reflect the sun’s rays in order to reduce or eliminate the heating effect through the roof or body panels. The knock-on effect is that there would be no need for air-conditioning, nor would there be need for mechanisms to open windows, thereby leading to a reduction in vehicle weight. In turn that would give better fuel consumption figures, meaning less by way of hydrocarbons being released into the air. If Global Warming were to not be a thing (although it might), then at least car drivers could kiss goodbye to being roasted at the beginning of journeys and enjoy lower running costs. A potential downside would be the need for both drivers and pedestrians to wear sunglasses to overcome the glare caused by traffic. In built up areas with heavy congestion, it would probably be wise to hand out free pairs to residents who, without doubt, would be affected by reflections resulting from my greatness. PHIL O’HARA

THE ASTRO-GUIDE
Flavour of the Times - If June was faster moving than usual, July slows it all down. It is more emotional too and maybe a bit selfcentred, clingy even. It is family-centred as well and you may find yourself setting personal goals in your home that will in time, give you a greater sense of security. It’s a good time at the beginning of the month to do something to provide for the longer term as well. I’d recommend a little caution though, as there are some limitations built in to what can be achieved.
CANCER June 22 – July 23
SCORPIO October 24 – November 22
PISCES February 20 – March 20
LEO July 24 – August 23
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22
ARIES March 21 – April 20
After the mad social, maybe slightly frantic Geminian whirl of June, you can start to feel better as this month opens – it’s as if your personal needs are finally getting some room to breathe. You may feel that a lot of emotion has been held back inside of you and now is the time to work out what you can to make yourself feel safer and more secure.
You may believe that you are very emotionally connected but how much do you actually show this to your nearest and dearest? The depth of feeling in you is undeniable and now is a good time to reveal it. The importance of family ties and how you create a nurturing spirit of safety and security around your home life will be emphasised.
There is a danger of misjudgments causing you to come unstuck this month as July may not work quite as well for you as you might hope. There is a risk of false starts, overblown ideas and personal projects that other people just see as self indulgent and selfish. You may be seen as emotional insensitive and perhaps petulant as a result. Patience is definitely required now.
When did you last nurture your ‘inner child’? Yours is a playful sign so this month is a great opportunity to have fun and indulge yourself a little. However, with Jupiter challenging the new moon, there is a definite risk of overdoing things, so keep an eye on any possible excesses because they could come back to haunt you at the full moon on 13th.
VIRGO August 24 – September 23
CAPRICORN December 23 – January 20
If you are involved in a radical restructuring of your life, this month provides the chance to check out if your plans will achieve for you what you hope they will. The devil is in the detail and you may be in your element fine tuning things to suit you better and make your life more secure. Your natural analytic nature should stop you getting too emotional at the full moon on 13th.
Emotions that have been well hidden may come bursting to the surface this month. You may have been taking on far too much responsibility for the well-being of others, so perhaps you can find time now to look at your own needs. As they say in flight safety briefings: put your own mask on first before trying to assist others!
LIBRA September 24 – October 23
AQUARIUS January 21 – February 19
Mars is still opposing your sign this month but you may be feeling a little less pressurised than you have lately. You may sense that it is a good time to try to pull people together and create emotional connections that will lead to greater harmony and balance between people. Don’t lose sight of your own personal needs at this time.
You get some relief from the over stimulation of last month and can now spend some time working out which of all the ideas on offer are actually going to suit you best. You are probably restructuring how your life works but this is an emotional rather than a mental process, so try to recognise what nurtures you as a unique individual and follow that instinct.

This is a good month for asking why you are doing what you do. You may have felt you are going through the motions or you may feel a constant sense of disruption from your usual routines that leaves you feeling ungrounded. Your need for security is very important to you so I’d advise you to spend time reflecting on what it is inside you that is looking for some love and TLC at the moment.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21
You had a lot of fun last month, but this month, the emotions catch up with you and may have left you feeling a little high and dry. There may still be opportunities for flirtations and hints about possible new relationships but how well do you really understand what you really, really want (or need for that matter)? A good time to spend some quiet time thinking about all this!

You may still sense the fiery force of Mars in your sign but it lacks direction and purpose now, so you should definitely ease your foot off the accelerator. When you do, you may notice that there are things that need attention in your life that you should slow down for and consider. If you really do have to be so active, look for the DIY jobs that need doing!

The social whirl of last month may have left you exhausted and as usual, you have spread yourself far too thin. It is a time to take stock and find some space for nurturing yourself. Neptune is about to go retrograde which is an energy that invites you to live in the real world and wake up to reality as it is, not what you would like it to be. Spiritually, invest in your own self-worth.
