CONTENTS

Are you ready for the Willen Hospice ‘New Year, New Challenge’ campaign? You can find out about fundraising experiences from skydiving to Mount Kilimanjaro at their information evening on 22 February.

Camphill is another remarkable local charity that supports adults with learning disabilities and autism. It’s wonderful to hear BBC Radio 4’s Martha Kearney is to become its first patron. She will be helping to raise funds for 60 new accessible rooms at Willen Park and Pennyland. Her brother-in-law was a resident at Camphill for many years, so she really knows what a difference it makes.

February is the time for romance. If you’re planning your big day with your Valentine you’ll find useful tips and information for your wedding plans across 10 pages in our Bride Guide. There’s helpful budget advice, beautiful venues, bridal bouquets and gowns, and perfect presentation for grooms too. We haven’t forgotten the allimportant cake creations either.

Did you know that animal welfare campaigner Dominic Dyer calls our city home? We interviewed him to find out how he decides which campaigns to support and to hear his views on how animals can help with our mental and physical wellbeing. And, of course, we can be more aware of what we eat too.

If you missed the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch at the end of January you can still encourage and entice some feathered friends into your garden. Have you considered a bird feeder or table and some water?

Lastly, you can find out what Men in Sheds, MiS or Shedders are all about. You might even want to join one of over 100 local MiS members – it’s not only for men. All you need to come along to the Shed at Kiln Farm is some time, an interest in community projects, and good kettle operating skills.

Keep going - spring is just around the corner!

For the fitness fanatics there are cycle challenges across the UK and Europe. Or achieve yiour running goals by applying for a charity in place in some of the world’s most iconic running events, including the MK Marathon and the Berlin marathon.

“The New Year offers a fresh start for many of us, where we can reflect on what is important in life and seek what we want to achieve over the next 12 months,” says willen Hospice Challenges fundraiser Dawn Clark. “Signing up for a challenge is a great way to commit to making 2023 the best year yet. This time next year you could be saying ‘I ran a marathon’, or ‘I did a skydive’, or after a year of training and fundraising, you could be packing your bags for our Mt. Kilimanjaro challenge.”

Challenges offer both an incredible experience and a fantastic way to fundraise, Dawn adds. “Friends, family and colleagues can be very generous

Kia wins big at DrivingElectric Awards

Kia has once again found success, with four models being declared class winners at the fifth annual DrivingElectric Awards.

The Driving Electric Awards celebrate the most efficient cars money can buy. Each category winner is decided by the publication’s judging panel, considering factors such as overall value for money, performance, and practicality.

The EV6 GT continues to further the brand’s reputation as a leader in electrification, being named ‘Best Electric Performance Car’. The all-new Sportage PHEV and Niro, both launched earlier this year, were awarded ‘Best Plug-in Hybrid Family Car’ and ‘Best Hybrid Family Car’, respectively.

Richard Ingram, Editor of Driving Electric commented on the EV6 GT’s award win: “In a category previously dominated by supercar-slaying German brands,

the Kia EV6 GT challenges the status quo and shows its rivals a clean set of heels. The scintillating straight-line performance is only part of the package; the GT is an incredibly capable all-rounder.”

The 577 bhp Kia delivers power and acceleration never before seen from the Korean brand, and further emphasises Kia’s commitment to fully electric

mobility. The combination of eyecatching design and jaw-dropping performance stunned visitors to the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the EV6 GT burst onto the scene and made its debut up the famous hill climb. However, it’s not just the EV6 GT which impressed judges at the 2023 Driving Electric Awards, with the all-new Sportage PHEV and all-new Niro both adding

to their resumé of prestigious awards.

“DrivingElectric sister site Carbuyer.co.uk voted the all-new Kia Niro as its overall Car of the Year only a few months ago, and it goes on to triumph here as well. Spacious, super-efficient and good to drive, there’s no finer hybrid family car currently on sale.”

It isn’t just Kia’s latest models that have won accolades. The previous-generation Niro was named ‘Best Used Hybrid Car’. Having launched both the all-new Sportage and all-new Niro earlier in 2022, 2023 is shaping up to be an equally big year for Kia. Next year, the brand will launch the fully-electric EV9, as Kia moves towards its goal of launching 14 EVs globally by 2027.

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a lightall fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords

are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.

Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.

Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been

referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’

So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Service With A Smile.

Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have

any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.

When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window

once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

National BBC Broadcaster Announced as Camphill MK Patron

She has accepted the invitation from the charity, which works with adults with learning disabilities and autism, and will be a figurehead in its fundraising campaign to build 60 new accessible rooms at its sites in Willen Park and Pennyland. Her brother-in-law was a resident at Camphill for around 30 years and Ms Kearney her husband are regular visitors. They also welcome Camphill MK residents to their home each year for a summer party. As a patron, she will advocate for the community, attend fundraising events, help the community to engage on a greater level and fly the flag for the charity.

“I am thrilled to be supporting Camphill MK as a patron,” Ms Kearney says. “The community is dear to my heart and I look forward to working with the team in any way I can to help them to secure such much-needed funding. Camphill MK is unique in its approach and enables adults with learning disabilities to live full and rich lives.”

Established in 1981, Camphill MK provides support, accommodation, and day workshops for adults with learning disabilities and autism. Ms Kearney will be supported by Camphill MK chief executive Tim Davies and head of development Lucy Davies.

Camphill M’s capital campaign began last year and aims to raise £15 million to 4xpand its facilities and double the number of rooms available. The new buildings will include fully accessible accommodation designed to adapt and grow with residents’ needs to include items such as level access, hoists, adaptive technology, and carer sleep-in space.

The campaign will also create a new purpose-built workshops unit for activities including pottery, weavery, tools refurbishment, an outdoor learning zone and new level access to the Camphill Theatre.

The project will be delivered over the next five years, with phase 1 (two accommodation blocks) under way by the summer.

Hearing loss should not be a barrier to leading an active, productive and fulfilled life. And the work being done by a specialist clinic in Milton Keynes has earned it a major national award. The highly qualified audiologists at Hearing Health Hub take patients through the entire assessment process, from a free hearing test through to free after care and support to make sure that the patient is at ease with and enjoying the benefits of the agreed hearing solution.

In awarding the clinic in Wolverton Road, Blakelands, the Audiology Healthcare Provider of the Year, the judges of Global Awards praised its range of solutions. The clinic has also partnered with industry-leading companies including Oticon and Phonak.

“We would like to say a massive thank you for all the support we have received from the local community and clients who we see on a daily basis,” says Hearing Health Hub’s principal Rahim Mitha. “The continued positivity that we have seen here at Hearing Health Hub has been amazing and we aim to keep building on this for the future.”

Assessments are undertaken using a video otoscopy and patients see before and after images to better understand their condition.

Hearing Health Hub’s assessment and treatment of earwax problems and tinnitus is second to none. The ear wax removal service is widely regarded as one of the safest methods in the industry, as it uses a microsuction device and a microscope so patients feel safe knowing that the entire process is

completed under close supervision. There are no liquids involved so the method is also entirely mess-free.

Tinnitus, a constant noise in the ear or head that can leave sufferers feeling debilitated, is often a symptom of an underlying hearing condition but Hearing Health Hub audiologists are able to offer effective treatment.

Is a Kitchen re-spray the new way to update and save?

any of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially now we have had more time at home lately.

But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.

Now local company FX-SPRAY MK is offering a complete professional paint spray service for kitchens.

It is a quick and simple process that leaves your kitchen looking brand new, says FX-SPRAY MK. The company removes and sprays 90 per cent of the kitchen off site, which means that very little work has to be done in your home, in turn meaning minimal disruption. An average kitchen can be completed within a week and home owners continue to use it during the process.

FX-SPRAY MK only use specialist products and having the latest spray equipment means the company delivers that brand new factory finish. A colour matching service to all major paint brands gives a huge choice - you can even go with a two-colour scheme.

“Can any kind of kitchen can be refinished or is respraying just for solid wood?” As long as your kitchen is in reasonable condition, FX-SPRAY MK can refinish it., even carrying out minor repairs and changing handles as part of the process.

How to help your lawyer help you and make your house move easier

Despite the current economic uncertainty, conveyancing remains as busy as ever, with many property lawyers working longer hours than ever to help get clients moved. So, what can you do to help your lawyer?

the more notice everyone in the chain has, the more likely your requirements can be met.

Holidays

If you are going away, it’s always advisable to let your lawyer know, so if they need anything from you, they can organise this before you go. Delays often occur because a client in the chain is unavailable to sign documents, or give authority for their lawyer to exchange contracts.

Source of Funds

Your Estate Agent

The above information is for general guidance only and does not constitute legal advice.

Heald Solicitors disclaims and excludes any liability in respect of the contents of this article or for action taken based on this information. If you need legal advice, please contact a solicitor.

It may seem that after a sale or purchase has been agreed your estate agent has done their job. This is not the case, your estate agent can be the key to a smooth transaction as they are the only person who can speak to all of the parties. This means they can get you updates and are best placed to liaise with parties about things like inspections or completion dates. They are also well placed to deal with non-legal issues, such as bin days, bus routes or the location of the stop-cock. A good and pro-active estate agent can work with you and your lawyer to make the process run smoothly.

Price

There are many reasons the property price may change during a transaction, from issues discovered during a survey to mortgage rates changing on a seemingly weekly basis. It is important to keep your lawyer updated of any price change,

as this has an effect not only on the contract, but also on the amount of SDLT payable, and possibly your mortgage offer.

Leasehold Property

If you’re selling a leasehold property, contacting your Managing Agent, Management Company or Landlord early in the transaction can save delays. You may need to purchase a management pack and any arrears in ground rent or service charge will have to be dealt with prior to the sale.

Exchange and Completion Dates

Generally, it takes about 12 weeks for a matter to progress to completion. If you have a set exchange or completion date you want to work towards, or other requirements regarding these dates, it is important to let your lawyer know about it as soon as possible. They will be able to advise you if a date is realistic and if not, explain the reasons for this. If it is possible,

Your lawyer is obliged under their professional regulations to obtain a comprehensive paper trail evidencing how funds towards the purchase of the property have been accrued. If the money has come from savings, a copy of a savings account statement together with evidence of how the savings have been accrued will be required. If the money is from inheritance, we will require a copy of the estate accounts or a letter from the Probate solicitor showing the distribution of the funds. Where money is accrued by way of a property sale which we have not been involved in, we will need to see a copy of the completion statement from the solicitor who dealt with the sale. Even if money has been paid to you by your parents, we still have to obtain copies of their ID and evidence as to how they accrued the funds.

Having all of this information to hand at the start can really help to avoid delays later down the line.

The first day of the new year was a wheelie big hit with motoring enthusiasts who flocked to Stony Stratford for the annual Vintage Stony car event.

Dozens of pre-war cars, classic motors and motorcycles coloured up the streets and the Market Square, with monies raised going to Willen Hospice.

ZSL Whipsnade Zoo staff made use of all their fingers and thumbs when they began the significant task of the annual stocktake earlier this month.

The zoo is home to more than 10,000 animals and zookeepers gathered their clipboards and calculators to take stock of every invertebrate, bird, fish, mammal, reptile and amphibian. It was a case of one, zoo, three...

Spider man spun a web all the way to Aspley Guise a few weeks ago, when he stopped by the Blue Orchid restaurant for dinner.

Actor Tom Holland who plays the superhero was happy to pose with staff at the eatery, a popular draw with fans of thai cuisine.

If you saw our feature in last month’s edition, you’ll know all about Chris Read and his alternative views of the place we call home. This month, he’s been droning on and on (not in the traditional sense, but rather with technology) and he’s shared these splendid birds-eye views, showing the main route through Olney and an alternative look at Newport Pagnell’s historic St Peter & St Paul Church.

Getting organised for your perfect day

Going down on one knee and popping the question is the easy bit.

If you have been given the right answer and they have said ‘I do’, you and your best friend are now agreeing to take your commitment to the next level.

But first, you’ll take on the all-consuming role of wedding planner with your partner (unless you decide to invite someone into your bubble to take care of that stuff for you).

Most of us choose to take on the burden (it might feel like that on occasion!) ourselves, and while thoughts of perfect wedding days are romantic, the best way to achieve all that you want is to be organised with a capital O!

Spreadsheets might not be all about hearts and flowers, but they will enable smooth planning, prevent brain fog and keep your blood pressure in the correct range – so reach for the laptop.

First things first, and you need to name the day so that you have something to work towards.

What time of the year? How far into the future will it be? Do you dream of a sundrenched day surrounded by family and friends, or would you rather take advantage of the colder months of the year, which offer their own appeal – think of frosty mornings and winter wonderland-themed receptions.

They can be every bit as magical, and offpeak weddings are naturally kinder on the bank balance, too.

Perhaps you already have your dream venue in mind. But if you’ve no idea, it’s time to google, and ask for recommendations. We’ve given you a few beautiful opportunities to investigate in the area, too – turn the page for those.

How does your day look? Perhaps you will want to keep things small and intimate for the ceremony and meal, followed by a significant evening celebration, or maybe you want everyone there to share every moment with you.

It’s time to get the guest list into some form – and don’t worry when it changes. It probably will, frequently!

Where is the evening venue? What about hotel stays for guests travelling a distance? Many hotels will offer deals and bulk bookings, so think ahead to prevent issues down the line.

Speaking of the floral side, petal power rules and a florist will need to be in place in good time, although you don’t need to discuss the specifics at such an early stage.

Whatever your choices, you will want a record of your special day, so employing the correct photographer and videographer is important. After all, there are no second chances to get it right. Letting Uncle Jimmy sway around with his mobile phone ‘capturing’ the action won’t suffice, and you know so.

‘Save the date’ cards need to be sent out with lots of warning. You can purchase them, but with a little effort, you can produce something pretty and unique to you.

It’s worth bearing in mind that peak wedding season is usually between May and October.

Set a budget that works for you, no matter how much or how little, but stick to it.

Occasional wriggle room is ok, but fight the urge to act on impulse – sleep on any decisions which aren’t part of the plan but will leave the bank balance looking poorly!

In 2022, the cost of the average UK wedding came in at a little over £20,000 pounds.

You want to enjoy the day with your new partner, and your friends and family. But do you really want to be starting married life with a wealth of debt?

We’re trying to be a little voice of reason here! When you’ve confirmed your spend, or perhaps simultaneously, you can begin the search for the perfect wedding location and reception spaces, which may be one and the same, if you choose not to opt for a church wedding.

Everyone wants the perfect day, but what that means to every bride and groom will vary tremendously, and there are actually very few things that every wedding dictates as essentials.

Be prepared to get busy with the pen, because though you might not think so, weddings do come with rather a lot of paperwork. And don’t forget the all important Notice of Marriage or Notice of Civil Partnership, the fee is negligible, but nothing is more important.

Organising a wedding is huge fun too, and a chance to explore your creativity; what theme will the day take? Will it be demure and traditional? Colourful and creative? Or something off-the-wall bonkers and unique? This is your show, so be as bold as you feel comfortable with.

What colours do you have in mind? They might feed into everything from bridesmaid dresses to table settings and floral arrangements, so don’t pick in haste!

The same goes for the wedding invitations – keep them simple, cute, or elegant. It’s all down to individual taste.

Of course your prime interest is for your nearest and dearest to be a part of your special day, but it’s also wise to think about your gift list.

If people are keen to give you a gift, would money towards your dream honeymoon be the perfect suggestion?

How will you travel to the ceremony?

From elegant motors to the clippety-clop of hooves, these things have to be thought out and enquiries made in good time to avoid disappointment.

There is so much to be organised but if you keep your cool, and get the big things taken care of, the little things will be a whole lot easier to work through.

And if you need help, reach out - you’ll have a network of friends and family keen to support you.

Your wedding day deserves to be every bit as special and unique as you are. Love every moment.

There is an enormous checklist of things to sort to ensure that your special day is bloomin’ marvellous – but choosing the right flowers is surely one of the most satisfying parts.

Georgianna Gillings runs Milton Keynes-based Jade Flower Boutique and has been in business since 2008. She was bitten by the flower bug (not in the literal sense!) from the get-go years earlier: “On my first day on the job I worked on a wedding, helping out and learning as I went along, and I’ve loved it ever since.”

The perfect floral scheme is as important as the right dress or suit, or cake; these elements all lock together to deliver the day you want and deserve.

Georgianna’s advice is to find a florist that you like and get them signed up as soon as you’re able.

“It’s ideal to try and book them as soon as you find one that you feel understands your ideas and vision for the wedding,” she told Pulse, “I have couples booking as early as two years in advance, but I can work with much shorter time

frames, so long as the date is available in my diary.

“It’s great if people have a rough idea of what they need; bridal bouquet, how many bridesmaid bouquets, buttonholes, and any decoration and table arrangements, which will help me to guide on schemes and give ideas.

“Very natural styles with lots of foliage and neutral colours for the flowers,” are the preferred choices for couples tying the knot in 2023, says Georgianna, “Pale blues, pinks and greens are still very popular, as they were last year.

“Flowers bring the room alive, bring the outdoors in and fill the space with the most beautiful of scents. They can completely change a dark room with bold vibrant blooms, or create a subtle romantic look with pale tones.”

Petal power Confetti

The origins of confetti can be traced back to pagan times, but although the exact materials thrown have changed the tradition still stands.

Showering the newlyweds in confetti when they leave their ceremony has long been a thing, and the first paper confetti originated in Italy in 1875. Two decades later and the UK had adopted the tradition.

Seeing the multi-coloured paper pieces blowing around a church frontage would give away that nuptials had recently been held there. But though it may be pretty, it is still litter, and when eaten by our wildlife, can prove nasty. And plastic confetti doesn’t break down, but adds to pollution. Things are changing and in recent years many venues will welcome you to say ‘I do’, but themselves say, ‘We don’t’ when it comes to allowing confetti on their land.

But you can still have your confetti – simply consider using biodegradable products.

Nature’s natural colours are the prettiest, they

won’t leave a mess and will decompose naturally.

Leaves are perfect, and can be holepunched to create wonderful patterns.

Of course florals are fantastic, and The Real Flower Petal Confetti Company has been ‘handpicking the best petals since 1997,’ and their easy to navigate website is the answer to every question you’ll ever think of. Pretty and perfect.

Going to the chapel and we're... going to say what?

Wedding vows and the exchange of rings might be a small part of the wedding day, but they are the most important bit, so they need to be right for you both.

Your first vow should be one to yourself that won't be read out on the day – you should vow to get everything just right!

Will you opt for the traditional vows or will you choose your own? And if you do opt for something bespoke, modern and unique, please make sure that you put down on paper what you want to say long before you are on the way to the service!

You don't need to be a great wordsmith, but if you are struggling, speak to a professional, or ask a friend to help. As long as the sentiment is yours, a little help is ok. Whether traditional, modern, civil ceremony or non-denominational a few things apply for all; the words are about you and your partner promising to be there for each other, and declaring your love for each other in front of those who mean the most to you.

Because it’s His Day too!

Grooms: we have everything you need to be completely involved in the planning of your wedding. Brides: Let him know we’ve got his back.

His Day is on a mission to make sure the groom(s) have the wedding resources they need, readily available so that they can have as much involvement in the process as they would like.

We are a future Husband and Wife team, David and Anna. We got engaged in 2022 and are planning our 2023 wedding. After attending a few wedding fairs, it became very clear that there was very little to nothing for the groom to see or do at these events.

That’s why we created our own groom community, aimed towards the groom, giving them the resources and ideas they need to get involved with the planning of their special day, because after all, it’s His Day too.

Much more than wedding fairs, His Day will give the groom somewhere to go for ideas, insights, and know-how on what to do in the

build up to their wedding, and how to make their special day as perfect as possible.

We are bringing you wedding fairs with an emphasis on men, an online community of like minded grooms, and a catalogue of resources to help with the whole process.

A slice of perfection

Euthymia Cakes owner Eva Cockrell has been whipping up wonderful wedding treats for clients for more than a decade.

A pastry chef and dietician with a fine eye for detail, she uses high-quality ingredients to deliver breathtaking wedding cakes, cake pops, pastries and cupcakes for those special occasions. Prefer vegan? Eva can sort that for you, too.

Euthymia Cakes is based in Milton Keynes, but covers Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire.

She walked us through the steps to wedding cake success.

“Although it might seem like a long time in advance, I would recommend allowing at least six to 18 months to start planning and contacting any suppliers that have caught your attention,” Eva advises, “Especially if your chosen date is one of the popular ones, and there are a few!”

Having a chat with your chosen cake creator nice and early will allow them to get a feel for your wedding, understand your theme and your wishes, and work towards what you want – and if you don’t know what that is, they can help with that too.

You don’t want an average cake for your big day, so there won’t be an average price either.

“There are so many factors that influence the price of the cake,” Eva said, “The size, shape, amount of tiers, quality of ingredients, custom colours, decoration, level of skill of the cake decorator, and then of course there is the amount of labour that each single part will take.”

Wedding dress fashions aren’t the only thing that change - cakes do too.

“Just like dress fashion, cake fashion follows very closely,” she agrees, “The pantone for 2023 is magenta and I can already see lots more orders for pink wedding cakes.

“Semi-naked wedding cakes are still popping up on social media, but there has been a decline in recent years due to the hot weather,” Eva revealed, “Cakes covered with sugar paste/fondant are easier to travel over long distances, because they usually have a sturdy chocolate ganache underneath the sugar paste.

“Classic florals, edible flowers and textures are very much on trend. Wedding cakes are now also more personal than ever, reflecting the couple themselves with colours and textures used for the wedding day.”

And never let anyone tell you otherwise – cake is important!

“Cake is more than a tradition, it is the focal point of the room, and unique edible art,” Eva added.

(Everyone’s crazy ‘bout) a sharp dressed man

Let’s be honest, when it comes to weddings, everyone wants to know about the dress – but that is only half the story. There is a groom to consider, too!

Men dress to impress as well, and it’s not as simple as just swapping from casual wear to any old suit. There is just as much thought that goes into the groom’s attire, and that of his best man, the father of the bride...and so on.

Northampton-based Saint Crispin Bespoke Menswear knows how to give leading men their perfect styling for the perfect day – irrespective of whether the wedding will happen at home, or away.

Dean Anderson has spent three and a half decades dressing men, and there have been lots of natural changes with the passing of time.

“Men of all ages are now far more conscious of their visual appearance than ever before, and many have never needed to wear a suit ever, so there is even more pressure to find the right suiting,” he explained.

A wedding suit is never ‘just’ a suit, and creativity rules here too!

“It needs to reflect the formality of the surroundings and how the bride is dressed,” Dean explains, “A bespoke suit will allow the groom to create his own very individual stamp, while also taking into consideration the bride’s colour themes.

“The sky’s the limit from the selection of fabric type, colour, linings, button finishes to hidden touches of the couples’ initials on the inside of the jacket or on the cuff. Everything is chosen to the groom’s specifications.

“The groom’s suit is vitally important in the overall look and feel of the occasion,” Dean added.

The same attention will be given to all the groom’s men and the father of the bridewhether a formal two-piece single breasted suit, or a double breasted three piece suit, it needs to be perfect.

If you are thinking of holding your church or civil ceremony abroad, you’ll also need to take into account the heat – you’ll still need to cut a sharp figure and any tailor worth his salt, and given enough notice, can sort that for you.

You need to look as though you are keeping your cool irrespective of those rising temperatures!

Remember, bespoke garments take time to create, and Dean advises that you give your tailor at least six month’s notice. The perfect fit really is just a call away.

Love or loathe it, Valentine’s Day returns, reigniting the high street’s flames for red and pink ensembles. A statement combination, whether you’ve a hot date to make, doing something solo, or spending the day with friends.

Sweet news is: you’ve probably got plenty to pull from your wardrobe at home already. So grab your old coats (in red, rose or cream), pair with one of the going out tops or dinner dresses you’ve been neglecting (in a clashing or matching colour), and step out looking a treat.

If in your heart of hearts you’re just not that into pink or red? Lilac and black make great alternatives. But at River Island

there are red wrap dresses to slink about in, which couple up nicely with Primark’s pink platforms and cute peep toe mules. ‘I never expected such a big political scandal’

His fight for animal welfare everywhere has taken him far and wide, but when he’s ‘off duty’ Dominic Dyer calls the new city home. He spoke with Pulse’s Sammy Jones about his work, and its associated challenges.

Everyone remembers the tense story of the former Royal Marine, Pen Farthing, battling to evacuate staff and animals from his Nowzad charity in Kabul during the fall of the Afghanistan capital to the Taliban in 2021.

Pen refused to abandon his staff and their families, or those animals being cared for at his facility, until they were granted permission to leave.

The whole gritty scandal that followed, including the war of words that rocked Whitehall, was detailed in the Channel 4 documentary, Animal Airlift: Escaping the Taliban

While Pen was in Kabul, a key collaborator was galvanising national and international support from here in Milton Keynes.

Dominic Dyer wears many hats connected to animal welfare, and is currently British Wildlife Advocate & Policy Advisor with the Born Free Foundation. His twitter handle says he is a ‘wildlife protection and animal welfare campaigner’ which is a succinct explanation.

Dominic had met Pen at a fundraising event and the pair bonded over a shared passion for dogs.

“When Pen was having this crisis moment in Afghanistan, he contacted me and I said ‘If I can help...” I took two weeks off my job at Born Free and threw myself into trying to rescue his staff and families and all of the animals.

“At the time it seemed crazy and impossible, but we got such huge public support wherever I went across the country.

“We gave back to back interviews on Good Morning Britain and the BBC and we got half a million pounds given to us by an American billionaire to enable us...”

So there was enough cash to charter a plane, but then came a locking of horns with

INTERVIEW
Dominic with Pen Farthing at COP26 in Glasgow Dominic Dyer addressing campaigners

the British Government. It ended up being Farthing and Dyer v the Ministry of Defence

“It all became a big scandal afterwards, but it’s about the 67 men, women and children and the 170 dogs and cats who got out of there. To me, that was an achievement which I am still extremely proud of, even though there was a huge amount of controversy,” Dominic says, resolutely.

“It was an important thing to do and I just felt I had to do it,” he remembers, “I had an opportunity, I had the contacts and I threw the kitchen sink at it. Pen was doing what he was doing in Afghanistan and I was doing what I was doing here and the combination of both of us, our characters are somewhat different but we just came together at that moment in time and we created this big media storm... but not everyone likes that.

“My relationship with dogs suddenly became a big international story and then a big political scandal, all because I wanted to help people who were helping dogs.”

Print and television news featured the story frequently, and as the clock ticked down and evacuation looked less likely, more and more people became invested in the cause.

“I never slept for those two weeks, and Pen obviously didn’t, he was risking his life. It was an extremely stressful period of time, and it didn’t really end there. It suddenly became more than about dogs – it became about the future of a Prime Minister and about our democracy, but having worked in government, trust and integrity are really important to me.

“I never expected what we were doing that August was going to turn into such a big political scandal.”

The Kabul affair might have quietened now but, sadly, there is always another cause for Dominic to throw his weight behind. How do you decide which causes to pick up with?

“I tend to choose a campaign that I think I can bring some weight to and some focus to, because I get asked to do loads, and I can’t possibly do them all, unfortunately.

“In the context of what I do with Born Free, there are a lot of policy issues and I dip into different areas where I bring my expertise to bear, and that continues to be Bovine TB in badgers, fox hunting and wildlife crime.”

Dominic also sits on the board of Wildlife and Countryside Link, a coalition for all of the big charities including the WWF, the RSPCA and the Wildlife Trusts.

He began working in Government when he was just 17 years old, and his time with the Ministry of Agriculture took him to the Whitehall boardrooms. What he learned there, gave him knowledge and ability that is now utilised in his work for animal welfare.

Public speaking is a passion, and a Cop 26 debate he organised saw Craig Bennett, Head of the Wildlife Trust, Chris Packham and Deborah Meaden on the stage.

“I am lucky that I can bring people like that, and organise events where we can have big discussions and debates like we did there about the global environmental crisis.

“There is a thread through my work, increasingly nowadays I look at where governments need to do things to stop exploiting animals, or where attitudes need to change to domestic or wild animals and I tend

to try and follow that thread. It might be about dogs in Ukraine or Afghanistan, or it might be about the Faroe Islands and how they kill whales and dolphins, or it might be the ongoing debate about our farming systems, and bovine TB and badgers...”

Dominic, who has lived in MK for more than 20 years, says the issue between animal and human rights is becoming an increasing focus for his time.

“Quite a lot of my work is leading in the direction where it coincides more and more; the mental and physical wellbeing of having animals, but also the issue around trying to protect people’s rights and animal rights in countries like Afghanistan are interconnected, and I guess the older I get the more I like to be seen as an influencer; as someone that can make people sit up and think...”

INTERVIEW

And there is certainly plenty to think about.

“I say this a lot, but I was born on the 21st of July 1970, exactly a year since Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. Then, there were 2.7 billon people on planet earth. There are now eight billion people on planet earth.”

If you let the enormity of that increase sink in, it’s obvious we need a change now.

“Britain is one of the most nature-degraded countries in the world, but the whole of the planet has struggled massively. My generation has done massive monumental damage to the planet and we need to engage with younger people to try and find some vision for nature to survive, that’s really important,” he thinks.

Sometimes the issues we face can seem too colossal to tackle, but it’s not about one person doing a lot, rather all of us doing something. We can all apply ourselves to helping reduce the exploitation of animals. Change can only come from us.

“Be more aware of what you eat, what you wear, where you go on holiday, who you interact with and the impact that has on animals and

We call them man’s best friend, but ultimately not every pooch is afforded the luxury of long walks, belly rubs and cuddling up in front of the fire.

We use animals for good; the work being undertaken by the locally-based charity Medical Detection Dogs shows how well we can coexist and how, with training, dogs can save lives. But elsewhere, the UK still breeds dogs for experiments.

“The work of Medical Detection Dogs is incredible and groundbreaking and we should be supportive of that, but then if you go to Huntington you find MBR Acres, a beagle breeding facility which provides puppies to biomedical research companies,” said Dominic.

The singer Will Young is one of the outspoken opposers of the facility. In the past he has chained himself to the fence of the unit to raise awareness of the practices there, and he has joined Dominic at the House of Commons for discussions.

Dominic said: “In Britain now, abuse of a domestic dog can lead to a prison sentence of five years, but under Home Office licence you

can experiment on them and make a lot of money breeding them for what are often failed animal experiments, which I think should end - and that’s a view widely shared beyond the animal welfare movement.”

Clearly there are great inconsistencies at work in the way we treat animals, at home and away.

Dominic’s four-legged companion Lassie is a rescue dog from Romania, and serves as a great reminder, though of course none is needed, of the importance of his work.

In Turkey, authorities are killing stray dogs in terrifying, brutal ways with many beaten to death and poisoned or strangled before their bodies are dumped in landfills. Others are tied to the backs of vehicles and dragged to their deaths.

Dominic’s twitter account is awash with difficult to watch videos, accompanied by pleas for us all to make a stand against such barbarism.

“I’ve had more than 1000 young people from Turkey follow me on twitter... and a lot of these are young women who have grown up under the Erdoğan regime in the last 20 years, in a country which is increasingly authoritarian,

the natural world – and don’t be afraid to speak up if you get angry about something,” Dominic encourages.

“If you are seeing awful images of dogs in Turkey, share them, speak up, tell the tourism board that you won’t go there. Contact the Turkish Ambassador in London – send them an email.

“If you are not happy about the Faroe Islands killing whales and dolphins, contact the Faroese Ambassador in London, tell the Danish ambassador, tell pop stars not to go to festivals there and not make big films there, like James Bond!

“There are lots of things people can reflect on to try and change what happens in certain parts of the world.

“And those small things too, like trying to reduce how much meat or dairy you eat, or try more plant based foods. I think they are all worth doing.”

And change starts on your doorstep.

“Engage in your local community - there are so many green spaces to be protected and enjoyed here in Milton Keynes. There is a lot of building and development going on here, too. Wildlife is under huge pressure: badgers and bats and other animals. We need to live in harmony with nature.

“In many ways The Parks Trust have done a good job of allowing nature to flourish in Milton Keynes and we should value that and treasure it and tell other people about why it is so important.”

As the New Year came in, Dominic sent out a reassuring post to his ever increasing followers: “My New Year resolution is to keep shouting out for animals and the natural world and being a mighty pain in the a*se for animal abusers and exploiters,” he promised.

Join him and stand up for the voiceless.

where human rights are being infringed. They are really risking everything by speaking up for animals.

“What the Turkish media haven’t zoomed in on is that ultimately this is as much about human rights as it is about animal rights, because if young people are standing up and saying ‘We want the government to stop all of this cruelty and all of this corruption,’ they are taking on the government, on a much wider issue than just dogs,” he explained.

“I know some of the young people I engage with could put themselves in harm’s way by demonstrating or protesting in a way that I’m not risking by being here, and that is something else that makes me think these days,” he admits.

“But it is so important that young people are willing to do it – whether it’s about street dogs in Turkey or climate change or about what we are doing about food and livestock production, we need young people. They are going to be in politics, in government, and they need to be able to make tough decisions - because our generation to a large degree have failed to do it properly.”

Cinnamon castagnole

February in Italy means Carnival, festival of masquerade, colours and music. Up and down the country, all regions celebrate in their own way, but with the same spirit: to have FUN. And not only dancing through the streets to the loud rhythm but having fun with food as well.

METHOD

1. Whisk the eggs and sugar until pale, add the cinnamon and continue whisking on a low speed. 2. Add the milk, oil and finally the flour and baking powder sieved together. Fold the ingredients until fully combined and to a gooey consistency. Let the batter rest for about 30 min.

In the meantime, place the vegetable oil in a saucepan and bring to 160° C.

With the help of 2 spoons, drop 1 tbsp at the time of the batter, and fry 4 doughnuts at the time, turning them often until of a golden brown colour. 5. Serve coated with sugar and cinnamon or make them naughtier, like I did, with a drizzle of maple syrup.

DIGGING DEEP The Big Garden Birdwatch

If you are sat with a hot-off-the-press copy of Pulse, you will still be in time to partake in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch this year.

In the last 50 years due to the nature and climate emergency more than 38 million birds have been lost from UK skies.

The Big Garden Birdwatch is an opportunity to document what is happening to the birdlife where you live, by simply counting the birds on your balcony, in your garden or in your local green space for one hour.

But even if you’ve missed the chirpy event in 2023 (over the weekend of January 27-29) there is nothing to stop you encouraging and enticing feathered friends to your garden right away.

If you want to incorporate a bird feeder or table into your garden, think about where it will be most useful – it should be somewhere quiet and safe. Avoid placing it close to bushes where predators could be waiting, but ensure it is close enough to cover so the birds can easily dart to and from the table. And it should be sheltered from harsh winds.

Disease is easily spread and can be fatal, so bird feeders need to be cleaned weekly with warm soapy water and dried thoroughly before refilling.

A constant water source is just as important – a saucer or shallow plastic tub will suffice; birds don’t care about the pattern on the pot!

Don’t be surprised if you don’t have an influx of beaky sorts flying in on day one, it can take a while for them to find and explore a new feeder, but patience will pay off.

Not all birds will use feeders and blackbirds are ground eaters who enjoy getting stuck into fatty nibbles and mealworms.

Don’t have a garden? No problem – you can still attract birds to your property; even if you live in a flat, a little bird feeder attached to the window will attract tits and prove a far better source of entertainment than the small screen!

We have a feeder attached to an upstairs window and have enjoyed generations of blue tit and great tits families visiting daily for the past few years.

Top Tip ...

There can be a tendency to hold back from getting out into the early year chill, but this is the time to get busy – plan now, and you’ll reap the success later.

What summer bulbs are you thinking of? Gladioli perhaps, lilies maybe? Get them ordered, and start looking at those planting positions.

Prune evergreens and winter-flowering shrubs that have bloomed, and with frost a concern, tree and soft fruit can use a helping hand if they are to crop well; small fruit trees will benefit from fleece covers (overnight only, remove during the day). Strawberries will also benefit from the same treatment, or the use of a cloche.

Pigeons and collared doves drink from the water tub attached to the ledge, and the fat balls hanging from the window proved a regular temptation for a magnificent great spotted woodpecker last summer.

Robins seemed all the more visible during the recent cold snap; one landed at our feet outside a shop in a very urban setting – the ground was snow covered and hard, and food scarce. I took to leaving the house with a pocket full of seeds and nuts to help them out!

In readiness for spring planting, I cleared a yard of weeds and general garden waste while the snow was down and a robin introduced himself and patiently sat on the fence hoping to hoover up any little live snacks I uncovered. They are called the gardener’s friend with good reason!

Birds bring colour, life and delight to gardens. Ditch the plastic grass and set about improving their lives. In return, they’ll remind you to stop, slow down and appreciate their beauty - and the sound of birdsong is food for the soul.

T&K’s Insulate+ Replacement Roof system creates an all-year round living space

Astylish insulated roof tiled roof can now replace transparent glass roofs which have been the norm for conservatories for many years.

Multi-award-winning T&K Home Improvements are leading the way in the innovative roof styles which not only look great but will insulate your home and significantly reduce energy costs from older roofs.

A change in building regulations has enabled the reliable and trusted brand to launch the new product range – T&K’s Insulate+ Replacement Roof system. Until recently, a conservatory roof was required to have a minimum 75% transparency. While this ensured the space was flooded with natural light it also meant the conservatory would be far too hot in summer and too cold in winter to use. The launch of a new solid roof system offers a stylish alternative which are tailor made to fit the existing framework so a conservatory can be transformed with minimal disruption to an all-year-round living space.

Thermally efficient transparent vents can also be added to the new roof to create more light and circulation of air in the summer months Adrian Timbers, Sales and Marketing Manager, said: “The changes in building regulations are great news for homeowners looking to update their conservatories to use.

“The insulated alternative will transform a conservatory into a contemporary extension which can be used all year round whilst reducing energy costs, carbon emissions and increasing the value of their home. Increased security and noise reduction are also other great benefits from transforming your tired conservatory roof.

‘The insulated alternative will transform a conservatory into a contemporary extension which can be used all year round whilst reducing energy costs’

“It is now possible to have a living space that stays cool in the summer, warm in the winter and, at the same time, make significant reductions in energy bills. The continuing pressure on the price of materials and manufacturing means this a good time to buy rather than delaying the decision and then finding in the coming months that it will cost a lot more to make the changes, and with paying for a new roof monthly it makes it more affordable.”

T&K guarantees the work unconditionally for ten years with the fitting undertaken by the family-run company’s team of experienced fitters. Monthly repayment plans are available to spread the costs for up to ten years.

Building friendships and things

If you think that Men in Sheds (MiS) is all about blokes getting busy with nails and bits of wood, you’d be a little bit right, but also very wrong. There’s more to it than that, as Pulse’s Sammy Jones discovered.

Nationwide, there are around 13,000 MiS members, or Shedders, to give them their collective name. It’s a healthy number and, impressively, the Milton Keynes branch is one of the most successful collectives in the country, with more than 100 members signed up.

Nigel Pigott is one of them. He made contact after retiring from the Open University back in 2013, and has been ‘an active member’ ever since. Today he is hands-on in more than one guise; he also serves as secretary for the branch.

“I have always been keen on woodwork and metalwork and the Shed offered facilities and expertise that I could never have found at home, as well as good company,” he says of the initial attraction to MiS.

And that’s the point – the Shed is a bit of a creative bubble, but it also offers social interaction and a welcoming environment. It’s a place of positivity that is about more than just toolboxes.

“We have many members who live alone and some suffer from mental health issues such as depression or anxiety,” says Nigel, “They find attendance at the Shed provides a ready made social environment and many relish the opportunity to fill their time with creative activities; others are happy simply to spend time in the company of others.”

So, while the Shedders are traditionally a ‘can do’ bunch, they don’t have to be super productive.

“We also have members who, for their own reasons, prefer simply to come to the Shed

and enjoy the company, without necessarily doing anything.”

When it comes to the practical side, Men in Sheds is an opportunity for people to get busy with a wide range of activities; from the aforementioned woodwork and metalworking, and plenty more besides. It enhances hobbies, utilises skills and members get to support community projects too, which is encouraged.

You might not realise it, but work by those Shedders pops up all over the new city.

Garden, made a treasure chest for an Easter challenge in Stony Stratford, and their replica music stand for The Rhythm Aces – a band active in the area from the 1940s – took pride of place at the 2021 Wired For Sound exhibition.

They have carried out work in support of the MK Food Bank, completed theatrical props and also created a fabulous tree for a touring theatre group. That job saw them employing help from a specialist company to assist with the machining – because if they can’t do it, they might know someone who can!

Their DIY skills keep them busy, but also colours up the area.

You need to be at least eighteen years old to join, and those currently signed up here in Milton Keynes include members in full and part-time work, those out of work, carers who need to take some ‘me’ time and people who have long-term medical conditions.

By far the largest group are people who have retired from the day job, but still have plenty to offer, and want the warmth of a ‘working’ community.

Collectively, the various Shedders bring a variety of skills to the table that can be shared and learned from.

It’s the members who decide what happens in the Shed, which in MK is located in a large industrial unit in Kiln Farm. The space also incorporates the Men in Sheds sub group Milton Keynes Maker Space, which provides facilities for technical projects including electronics, computing and 3D printing.

And at odds with the name, these days Men in Sheds also welcomes ladies to the fold.

“Until fairly recently we resisted approaches from prospective female members – given our name and the focus on men’s health,” Nigel explained, “However, we began to receive requests from a small number of women who were keen to learn woodwork and for whom no other facilities existed in Milton Keynes, so we let them join, and the outcome has been very positive.”

It’s safe to say that things are going from strength to strength: “Not only have they become, in a short time, some of the most skilled woodworkers we have, but the effect of having women in the Shed, from my perspective anyway, has been beneficial.

“They generally have better listening and other ‘soft’ skills and they are very tolerant of the occasional laddish behaviour from the men. We now also run evening groups in more traditional ‘female’ activities such as crochet and machine sewing.”

If you’ve been away from work or social circles for any period of time, the thought of attending anywhere new might be daunting. But do take the plunge and reach out – you’ll be glad you did.

“Anyone who is looking to spend their time productively and perhaps to contribute to our

community projects is welcome to join, as is anyone who is looking for a friendly social group with diverse backgrounds,” Nigel encouraged.

Join Men in Sheds and two things are guaranteed – you’ll make acquaintances, and be called upon to operate the kettle every once in a while. After all, brews make happy Shedders!

A productive start to 2023

Ihope this article finds you well after a positive start to 2023. It has been a busy but productive month back in Parliament and I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the things that I have been doing as your local MP.

Knife Angel

In early January, the Knife Angel departed from Milton Keynes following a month of action against violence of all forms. The Knife Angel, also known as the National Monument Against Violence and Aggression, has been made from over 100,000 weapons that have been seized by or handed in to the police. I had the opportunity to visit the monument and to meet with the CEO of MK Dons Sports Education Trust, Maralyn Smith, to learn more about the range of work that is being done whilst the Knife Angel was outside Stadium MK. Hearing the positive feedback and the progress made with schoolchildren across Milton Keynes was really reassuring and so I would like to thank all the partners involved in making it possible.

Funding To Tackle Homelessness In Milton Keynes

I am pleased to share that Milton Keynes has received a boost to end homelessness in the city with a further £4.2 million worth of funding from the Government for the next two years. As part of the Homelessness Prevention Grant, Milton Keynes will receive £2,082,830 in 2023/24 and £2,165,337 in 2024/25 to prevent more people from becoming homeless or sleeping rough in Milton Keynes. I welcome the news that this Conservative Government is providing £4.2 million of funding to tackle homelessness in Milton Keynes over the next two years. Whilst the funding is ring-fenced, I am pleased that the Council will have some flexibility in how to spend it and so provides the maximum impact.

Funds Available To Improve Facilities For HGV Drivers

Also, I have been encouraging Milton Keynes businesses to improve their facilities for HGV drivers with Department for Transport funding. Whilst it is no secret that Milton Keynes is an ideal location to have a logistics hub, I know that the facilities and parking in the city for HGV drivers are not as good as they could be. I have visited businesses at the Magna Park site and have heard first-hand of the issues that HGV drivers face on a regular basis. I am also fully aware that there are other distribution centres that would like to see better facilities and parking in Milton Keynes for their drivers. That is why I really welcome this funding opportunity from the Department for Transport to improve conditions in Lorry Parks and I hope that distribution and logistics businesses in Milton Keynes will apply to take up this opportunity.

Marston Vale Line Suspension

Over the last month, I have been lobbying the Rail Minister for an early as possible reinstatement of rail services on the Marston Vale line between Bletchley and Bedford. I am fully aware of the disruption that the line suspension has caused for my constituents and users of this line, and I will continue to lobby for a resolution to this situation.

As always, if I can be of any help as your local MP, please do get in touch with me on the contact details provided below.

Fighting for better rail services in Milton Keynes

Since I wrote my last column for MK Pulse we’ve had some fantastic news with a number of people from across Milton Keynes receiving awards in His Majesty The King’s New Year’s Honours List. To name just a few, congratulations to David Foster, the former Parks Trust’s CEO of almost 20 years, for his BEM, Leah Williamson, Newport Pagnell’s very own Lioness, for her OBE, and Louisa Hobbs, who does fantastic work with the Food Bank, for her BEM. It’s wonderful to see people providing such a positive, impactful contribution to our community being recognised for that.

We’re a month into the new year now and I want to remind you of my priorities for Milton Keynes. Getting tough on crime. Investing in healthcare. Tackling the cost of living. Preventing reckless overexpansion. Campaigning for MK:U. And there’s much, much more. Whether that’s fighting for better bus services or working to prevent flooding. I will continue to work for you.

2023 Cost Of Living Support In Milton Keynes

As we know the impact of Putin’s war in Ukraine and significant spending to keep people in jobs and businesses afloat during the pandemic have both caused an increase in the cost of living in the UK, and around the world. The Government is committed to supporting the most vulnerable people in society through this difficult time and I’m pleased they have now set out plans for support across 2023/24.

Exact payment windows will be announced closer to the time, but are spread across a longer period to ensure a consistent support offering throughout the year, with 3 Cost Of Living Payments worth £300 coming in Spring 2023, Autumn 2023 and Spring 2024, a £150 Disability Payment coming in Summer 2023 and a £300 Pensioner Payment arriving in Winter 2023/24.

£4.2m For Milton Keynes To Tackle Homelessness

I’m delighted Milton Keynes will receive £4.2 million as part of the Conservative Government’s the Homelessness Prevention Grant. The funding will be spread across two years with £2,082,830 in 2023/24 and £2,165,337 in 2024/25 to help prevent more people from becoming homeless or sleeping rough in the city. This follows a £321,034 boost announced in December to tackle homelessness this winter in Milton Keynes and is on top of significant funding provided over the last few years. The ringfenced grant will be provided upfront each year and can be used flexibly by councils to deliver their homelessness and rough sleeping strategies - by offering financial support for people to find a new home, providing temporary accommodation, working with landlords to prevent evictions or other measures to prevent homelessness.

Fighting For Better Rail Services

I’m continuing to fight for better rail services in Milton Keynes as I’m well aware of the frustrations faced by commuters on the trains being a regular train user myself. I recently spoke in a debate in the House Of Commons on the West Coast Main Line and called on Avanti to be stripped of their contract if the service they provide does not improve. Before that debate I had written to Avanti and they had apologised about the service and promised improvements, and I have also now secured a meeting with them to discuss this even further. Thank you to everybody who shared their experiences with me and if you would like to see my speech you can find it on my website beneveritt.com

The varied life of a Mayor

The Mayor of the city of Milton Keynes, Cllr Amanda Marlow gives an idea of the highs and lows of her role in a description of a day from last November.

One of the key things about being Mayor, about being a part of civic life, is that your day can be an emotional rollercoaster. This was something that I felt very keenly last November when my days engagements reflected the depth and the impact of how you have to deal with your emotions and thoughts throughout the day. At the start of my day I attended the Business Breakfast in Bedford, where I gave a positive speech about what becoming a city means to not only Milton Keynes, but also to our geographical neighbours. My speech was well received and I was pleased with how it had gone. I got into the car and drove back to MK for my next engagement, which was a hard hitting campaign run by Thames Valley Police entitled “Safe Drive Stay Alive”.

I spent the next hour quietly crying, watching and listening to the powerfully thought provoking narrative that was played out, not only by the film that they showed, but also by those who gave their personal testimonies that are left behind.”

It is aimed at young adults of driving age, and is about the devastating impact caused by poor driving, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, and not wearing a seatbelt. I spent the next hour quietly crying, watching and listening to the powerfully thought provoking narrative that was played out, not only by the film that they showed, but also by those who gave their personal testimonies that are left behind. All bearing witness to the tragedy that is born out by thoughtless and reckless driving. I was sat next to a lovely man, who had lost his teenage son in a motorbike accident over the summer. We sat clutching each others hands, both of us feeling very overwhelmed and affected by what we saw and heard.

After that event, feeling emotionally drained, I hurried to my next appointment which was at Niftylift in Shenley Wood, where they had opened up their engineering

and manufacturing plant to demonstrate and encourage secondary school aged girls to choose tech as a career path. It was a fascinating interactive visit, covering working the lift controls, understanding facial recognition software, seeing how the machines are assembled and how they work, and the logistics of sourcing parts globally. I was then filmed and asked about why I felt it was important that women and girls should think more about choosing science and engineering, and about why apprenticeships are without doubt a major contributor to the success of business in Britain. Through out all of this activity, at the back of my mind, was the powerful message from the Safe Drive Stay Alive campaign –replaying over and over. I had two further engagements that day, which was a meeting with a local business leader and then on to an Interfaith event which was about the Cost of Living crisis. All the while I was still processing what I’d seen earlier in the day, while trying to do my job as Mayor and not show how affected I’d felt by the morning’s presentation. It literally took me several days to get over TVP’s messaging and I hope that it will have struck a chord with all of the hundreds of sixth formers and college students who attended the two presentations, and that it will be something that young drivers will remember when they’re behind the wheel of what is effectively a weapon.

It’s a funny old business being Mayor of the city that you love. The impact is something that

stays with you forever, and I hear this statement so often from previous mayors. We have a lot to celebrate here in MK as well as a lot to support each other through. The kindness and generosity of others never ceases to amaze, whether it be through the MK Food Bank’s monthly Big Doorstep Give or through taking time to help others. We are blessed to have a fantastic community here in MK, who give so much.

It was great to end the year through sporting success, on such a positive note. Oracle Red Bull Racing who won not only the World Drivers Championship, with Max Verstappen having had a superb season, but they had also won the Constructors Championship. To celebrate, they took to the streets of Milton Keynes on 10th December, roaring up and down Midsummer Boulevard. It was an incredible spectacle to mark the end of an incredible year for the team. Add that to the news that Red Bull by 2026, will be building the F1 engine in their Tilbrook factory alongside the chassis, which will mean that the whole car will be built right here in MK. Ferrari are the only other F1 race team to do that. This is tremendous news for not only Oracle Red Bull Racing, but also for Milton Keynes, and it just goes to show how much faith Christian Horner and his team have by being based here in MK, and that they will be bringing even more jobs to MK. What an end to an incredible year, and let’s see what success 2023 will bring to MK.

£5.7m funding for a new radiotherapy unit at Milton Keynes University Hospital

As more and more people continue to choose Milton Keynes as their home, it is crucial that we continue to invest in expanding our key infrastructure.

That is why I’m pleased to say that Milton Keynes City Council is set to fund £5.7m for a new radiotherapy unit at Milton Keynes University Hospital, bringing the total it has given to the hospital for cancer and acute care to £15.7m.

We have worked closely with the Milton Keynes University Hospital Trust for several years, using money that we raise from commercial developers as they build new homes to develop facilities and health services on the campus at Eaglestone. This money can then be spent on a range of facilities that benefit local people as the city grows.

Previously, this meant £5m could go towards the Hospital’s Maple Centre for emergency assessments and care which opened in late 2022, and £5m was put towards its bespoke Cancer Centre which opened in early 2020.

The new £5.7m adds a local radiotherapy unit to the Cancer Centre, meaning MK patients who currently have to travel to the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, which is often a three hour round trip, could instead receive essential treatment on their doorstep.

This is a major benefit of living in a growing city, as people will have more specialist healthcare closer to their home. It’s great news that this funding will help the University Hospital unlock this important facility for local residents. £15m buys some stateof-the-art facilities which the team is making and will continue to make fantastic use of.

I look forward to working with the University Hospital as the plans progress, and we could see the radiotherapy unit open as early as spring 2024.

Show some love for Lavene

When they formed in 2019, Benefits were, by their own admission, ‘a fairly standard Idles-lite shouty punk rock outfit’, but one that has since evolved into a highly politicised group merging noise, hip hop, industrial rock, electronica and garage...so you’ll get your monies worth when they visit on February 2.

Despite having no management, no label and no PR, and having no radio support (because of their naughty lyrics), they are still getting through – because creativity and relentless enthusiasm counts.

Fans include Elijah Wood and Sleaford Mods. Nice.

Welsh players Holding Absence wrap up a 20 date tour of these shores at the Wolverton venue on February 5.

The cover stars of Kerrang! magazine’s seasonal edition will be joined by Void of Vision, but this info is only of use if you’ve got your ticket; as with much of the tour, the show sold-out before Christmas!

The Kris Barras Band (Feb 8) enjoyed their highest charting album in 2022 when Death Valley Paradise made it into the Top 30 UK album chart. It signalled a new beginning with a darker and heavier approach, and it’s working well for them.

The band have been reaching new ears with juicy support slots alongside artists including Bon Jovi, Black Stone Cherry, Beth Hart and John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, but now it’s

time for the former cage fighter and his cohorts to take centre stage.

“People used to think I was crazy to be fighting in cages, risking damage to my hands,” Kris says of his violent past, “Truth is though, I always enjoyed it and found that the fighting world offered me more opportunities than the music industry. I got to fight in front of 800 people in Asia...I would’ve much rather played to them instead of getting punched in the face!”

Scottish trio Anchor Lane (Feb 15) have just released their new elpee, Call This A Reality? and will share some of that with you, before Scott Lavene (Feb 16) visits.

Essex born and raised, Lavene has struggled with addiction (a battle now won), was told to ‘Get a grade – you can’t do music,’ in his formative years, and answered that train of thought from his stepdad by heading to France armed with a guitar. He lived in a tent and travelled around before reconnecting with English soil. Canterbury was his new home and he lived among fellow creatives and stoners.

Later, in London he lived on a house boat and started a band that he says sounded like ‘Chas ‘n’ Dave meets Queens of the Stone Age, basically,’ which sounds like our kind of musical heaven. But all was far from fine, and things played out badly:

“I was just not well,” he recalled, “The madder I got, the more inclined I was to write about going mad. And then my mental health hit a point where I just stopped everything. I stopped playing music for seven years. My life was just solitude, self harm and mental institutions.”

And then, gradually, the rebuild began. He started working with a charity for addicts and alcoholics, and helped to run a music workshop for folks in similar positions to him.

Music has threaded its way through Scott’s family; his grandfather was a successful trad-jazz musician, while his father was a ‘failed musician’, but now Scott was creating with a real honesty, and the results were worth pursuing.

In 2016 he delivered Deadbeat Ballads under the name of Big Top Heartbreak, and then in 2019, Broke followed.

In 2021, Milk City Sweethearts was added to the musical armoury. Scott Lavene’s journey has been frenetic and with some highs and lows we can only guess at. His biography says ‘he’s that voice in our ear who always has a tale more weird, more tragic, more funny than our own, but in whose experiences we can see our own.’

Scott said: “I’ve had people tell me my gigs made them laugh, and then moments later they wanted to cry. In the end, people want to feel things, don’t they?”

He comes to The Craufurd on February 18. You should go.

And we can’t go without giving a mention to Torus. 2023 is shaping up to be a fine year for the rising rock mob who have all sorts of cool plans, but first things first, and they cater for the home crowd with a newly announced date at the venue on February 17. Quality assured.

Calling from the underground!

Iwas working on my fanzine when the Roadrunner Records package arrived with a pristine vinyl album in, writes Sammy Jones. There was nothing unusual about that – it was the early ‘90s and media sorts digested all new releases that way. Way more exciting than the streams today, which are delivered to your inbox by faceless PRs.

River Runs Red was the debut album from New Yorkers Life of Agony. It was another album for the pile of listening.

Except that it was anything but just ‘another’ album. It was as dramatic as it was musically delicious as soon as the stylus made the connection with that vinyl.

Step On for tickets

If you were reading a couple of issues back, you’d have caught our exclusive interview with Happy Mondays fella Shaun Ryder, who passed through Milton Keynes recently.

Now, Shaun’s bandmate is heading this way. Boogie boy and maracas shaker Bez will be live at Unit 9 on February 3 with a DJ set spilling the best in indie dance anthems.

Bez will be curating the bash, and will be joined in spin by DJ Arlo and support.

> Get tickets at unitninemk.com

Its content was dark - abuse, neglect and suicide was all addressed within the tracks of the concept opus.

“River Runs Red was an album that helped so many people get through some really dark times,” reflects bassist Alan Robert, “It was raw, heavy, and extremely emotional when it dropped back in ‘93. We had no idea the impact it would have on that generation, let alone being able to see it have such longevity three decades later.”

I still have that vinyl release, and their music has been a staple of mine ever since.

Life of Agony last played here in the new city in October 2019, and they return to The Craufurd

Get yourself in a spin

The delights just keep on coming at Off The Record, the pre-loved music store located at The Point in Central Milton Keynes, which swells the coffers of Willen Hospice.

The shop is well-stocked with vinyl, cassettes, CDs, concert programmes, music autobiographies, instruments and more.

Our choices this month are first edition copies of two metal classics; Ace of Spades by Motörhead and the self-titled debut album by Iron Maiden

Both elpees – which are in excellent condition – hit the shelves in 1980 and both served the band’s well. Ace of Spades became the anthem for Lemmy’s fast and furious legendary

rock trio, and Maiden’s release featured their first ever single, Running Free.

That track sold more than 10,000 copies in its first week of release – a major achievement for a largely unknown band, and they did it without any mainstream play.

Iron Maiden have gone on to shift in excess of 130 million albums, which isn’t too shabby, is it?

If you want to bag yourself a slice by two of metal’s finest, hurry along to the store.

Stripped show for W&W

Wilson & Wakeman make their return to The Stables in Wavendon on February 3.

Damian (Wilson) has a versatility to his vocals which means he can sing his way across the genres like few others can. Aside from his six solo albums, Damian took the lead on stage in Les Misėrables for two years, which saw him hit up many of the UK’s premier stages.

Adam (Wakeman) has enjoyed success in his own right, alongside his father, Rick, and with artists too varied to mention in their entirety,

but also including Take That, Annie Lennox, Slash, 10CC and Will Young.

Adam is the keyboard player and guitarist with Ozzy Osbourne, and held the same role with Black Sabbath. Most recently seen on the Stables stage with Jazz Sabbath, this date is an opportunity to engage in the Wilson & Wakeman catalogue, which spans three albums, along with a splash of stories and songs from their respective back catalogues.

Solstice shine in national poll

The annual Cropredy line-up has been announced and looks set to be a blast with 10CC, Richard Digance, Merry Hell, Beans on Toast, Wilson & Wakeman and the ever entertaining Toyah and Robert Fripp all heading over to the Oxfordshire village for the Fairport Convention headed festival.

And there’s another familiar name in the listings – MK’s own Solstice are booked to play.

“Great to be announced as part of the first wave of acts,” said guitarist Andy Glass, writing on the band’s Facebook page, “Just waiting for confirmation on which day, but proposed is a 75 minute slot late Saturday afternoon which would be phenomenal.”

> Cropredy runs August 10-12. For more festival details and to book tickets visit fairportconvention.com

And while we are on the subject of Solstice, the results of Prog Magazine’s 2022 readers’ poll were recently announced, with Marillion taking the top spot in the band category, and the Pulse music faves, Finnish masters Von Hertzen Brothers in at number 6. And Solstice bagged 8th spot.

There was further success for the band, with Andy Glass voted 5th in the poll for most favoured guitarist, and Jess Holland hitting 4th position in the category of female vocalist.

And it’s not only Cropredy that is signing up MK talents. Annual metalfest Bloodstock (August 10-14) will be headed by Killswitch Engage, Meshuggah and Megadeth in 2023, but Tuskar and Casket Feeder feature among the supporting cast.

He’s ‘bean’ before and he’s coming back!

Outlaw folker Beans on Toast will be back in the Keynes on February 24, serving up another portion of protein heavy goodness, as part of his Back Out On The Road tour.

Beans is a particularly prolific creator, and he’s been at his game for more than 17 years, so there’s a huge catalogue of tracks from which to pick for the evening’s setlist.

In December, Beans released his 15th album, The Fascinating Adventures of Little Bee, which saw him targeting a new audience; he teamed up with Jaime and Lily Adamsfield to deliver a collection of illustrated stories and songs for children.

Don’t take the kids to this show though, which is more likely to pull from musical moments including 2021’s album, Survival of the Friendliest

“Folk music is an age-old art form, and it’s more relevant than ever in these wild and crazy modern times,” Beans said, telling ticket-holders that they can get set for a warm and fuzzy time at the MK11 show, “You can expect an inspiring and entertaining gig, a relaxed and fun affair that leaves you feeling like you’ve met up with an old friend, and you’re all the better for it.”

Classic Dahl delivery goes on the Roald!

Pulse’s Sammy Jones takes a look at the month ahead in theatre-land, which features a ‘chocolate box’ musical and enough comedy bringers to make your face ache.

Adevilishly delicious tale begins its first ever UK tour here in the new city this month, and it’s a bonafide classic from the perfect pen of Roald Dahl.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory follows golden ticket winner Charlie Bucket and the mysterious confectionary wizard Willy Wonka. Take your seats for a sweet treat that will transport you to a world of pure imagination!

When Charlie wins that special ticket to visit Wonka Chocolate Factory, he has the chance of a lifetime; to indulge in all the sweets he’s ever dreamed of.

But when he and the other winners go beyond the gates and down the sugary corridors, they discover that amongst the incredible and edible delights, not everything is as sweet as it seems.

Music from the original film will feature, which means you get to wrap your ears around The Candy Man, Pure Imagination and I’ve Got a Golden Ticket, but there are plenty of new classics in the making too – written by multi-award winning composer and lyricist Marc Shaiman (Hairspray and Mary Poppins Returns) and Scott Wittman.

Stage star Gareth Snook, whose previous West End credits include Les Misérables, Sunset Boulevard, Aspects of Love and The Phantom of the Opera, will take on the role of Willy Wonka.

There will be plenty of time to enjoy this ‘chocolate box’ of a musical, too – the curtain rises on the month-long stay on February 9 , with performances until March 5..

The tour itself is now booked through to the end of November 2023, with more venues to be announced.

When you’ve taken a golden ticket for a performance of the choccie delight, you’ll still have time to enjoy some other theatre treats, and comedy reigns supreme at The Stables.

Rob Newman (Feb 2) has a new stand-up epic that goes from cave paintings to car-free cities to ask: ‘Who are we?’ ‘Where are we going?’ and ‘How do spiders fly?’

It’s a performance The Times says ‘combines proper scientific argument with dazzling shafts of wit.’

‘It’s Best You Hear It From Me’ promises Hal Cruttenden (Feb 8), talking about his new show, which is about being single again, after 21 years and 224 days of union.

He’s lost enough weight to almost get his wedding ring off, but while he might be flying solo, he still has plenty of company – his grownup daughters, his dogs and his divorce lawyer.

In a recent interview, Hal discussed this new show’s subject matter: “It’s a bit of a gift, comedically, to be getting divorced,” he said, “I feel sorry for people who aren’t in the arts who get divorced. It’s such a good avenue to get your thoughts out.”

Babatunde Aleshe presents Babahood on February 12, but if you aren’t already in receipt of a ticket, you won’t be attending – his stint in the jungle has done wonders for sales - the whole tour is now sold-out!

The

Lucy Porter delivers a Wake Up Call (Feb 18) with her show about revelations, realisations and epiphanies as she covers everything from bin collection schedules to cats and school fair booze tombolas.

Maisie Adam is Buzzed (Feb 22) but unsurprisingly that date is all sold out too, so check in with cult-favourite Paul Foot (Feb 25) who brings Swan Power to the stage.

He’ll take the mic, open his beak and explore topics including a potential solution to the problem of online trolling, the underwhelming sex drive of pandas and a severely abridged reenactment of the blockbuster, Titanic. Oh, and while there is no mention of swans in the show, Eamonn Holmes will be discussed.

If laughter really is the best medicine, we’ll all be feeling more than fine by February’s end after this little lot.

Glitter

Imay have discovered the most enduring substance on the planet. It seems to be indestructible and determined to outlast just about everything, including my patience.

A Christmas card had arrived, its front encrusted with the material. When I opened the envelope in which it hid, the stuff drizzled out then lied about intending to remain where it had landed. Wise to its ways, I immediately brought the vacuum cleaner to bear so as to avoid giving it any time to spread throughout the house.

As I consider myself clever enough to outwit mere glittery powder, I figured the use of a small electric torch to illuminate the spillage while clearing up would be wise. From experience I knew that I could be seeing it for a long time as the light changed through the year and particles glinted according to

I returned the vacuum cleaner to its home in the cupboard under the stairs.

As I walked through the living room towards the drawer unit in which the torch usually resides, my eyes spotted a twinkle at the foot of the door into the room. Torch still in hand, I investigated and discovered a smattering of the persistent little beggars.

Before touching anything, I carefully examined the path I had walked between the original incident and the understairs cupboard. There were no further sparkles and I scratched my head, wondering how it had managed to be transferred. Then my wife suggested it was a previous Christmas card that had been hanging from the door in a rack.

A Christmas card had arrived, its front encrusted with the material. When I opened the envelope in which it hid, the stuff drizzled out then lied about intending to remain where it had landed.”

some mystical optical rules known only to itself and the physicists who specialise in its properties. However, this time I was going to beat the threat.

Had it been flour, salt, sand or any normal substance that obeys the laws of physics, the thirty minutes of vacuuming and peering as I shone my torch into various nooks and crannies would only have been two. When finally satisfied that I had picked up every single speck,

Thinking about it, she was very obviously correct. What I had discovered was the glitter from last year that I hadn’t taken enough care to clear from the carpet. We weren’t displaying any cards on the door this year as the rack broke as I took it down last year.

Or was it the year before?

With the pandemic going on, I wasn’t sure. While I set about using the vacuum cleaner to thoroughly clear the area of those pesky fragments, I tried hard to think which year it was when I broke the hanger. While on my knees and painfully removing all signs of the stuff, it occurred to me that when I had originally and obviously unsuccessfully attempted to pick it up, we had not yet bought the vacuum cleaner I was using.

That meant it had to be Christmas 2010, or possibly even earlier!

Humanity might be pretty good at destroying the planet, but it isn’t so hot at destroying all traces of glitter!

Flavour of the Times - February dawns with hint of further changes in the air. Pluto may not have gone into Aquarius quite yet (which is a future cosmic biggie) but the new moon in Aquarius sets the tone for this month on 21st January. This will have brought all sorts of ideas and alternative thoughts into play so pay attention to that. Things soften in February as we go into Pisces so it’s probably a good moment to start to envision what you need for your own inner self as the year lightens up, signaling the end to the winter darkness. Maybe it’s about breaking old habits or tackling an old problem in a new way. A good month overall for just quiet reflection on what the possibilities might be this coming spring.

AQUARIUS

January 21 – February 19 January was about thinking, but February is more about feeling. Try to flex those emotional muscles rather than trying to think your way out of every situation. We know Aquarians are clever but sometimes ‘too clever by half’ so use this month to take a mental step back: maybe acknowledge some emotional ‘stuff’ that you usually push to the back of your mind.

PISCES

February 20 – March 20

It’s important to recharge your batteries this month. You may have felt that you have been ‘put through the wringer’ (nobody has ‘wringers’ anymore, do they? But you know what I mean!) But your capacity to just melt into the flow is a helpful quality to have now –let go of everything you know you can’t control and believe in a positive outcome eventually.

ARIES

March 21 – April 20

Imagination comes from within not from outside. But how often do you ever listen to these inner truths? Brick walls and heads don’t go together well so make some space for reflection on what’s working and what’s not. The new moon sets the tone on Monday morning, the 20th February, - a good moment to come up with some new intentions.

TAURUS

April 21 – May 21

You may have found things changing for the better towards the end of January as Uranus goes forward again and perhaps a sign of at least some welcome developments. However, too many things still feel out of your control now, ideas may abound but you will want to ground them in the real world before you will feel convinced they are worth all the hot air!

GEMINI

May 22 – June 21

February is much softer and less easy to define then January; don’t agonise too much about this. Allow yourself to be a bit befuddled and try to reduce the level of chatter in your brain. Meditate. Only then will you begin to notice anything that is at all meaningful. If you do, hang onto it because it can easily get lost in the general babble of life and social media.

CANCER

June 22 – July 23

Foundations may feel rocked in the early part of February but by the full moon on 6th, you may have found a way through some of the difficulties. The solution may have come as a surprise to you but go with it anyway. There are always more possible options than we notice when we feel trapped so take the path less travelled this month. Let it meander where it wants!

LEO

July 24 – August 23

You should examine the need for more give and take in your relationships on 8th, just after the full moon. You may wish to ponder on whether you are too demanding of others. Where does this actually come from; what insecurities lurk under that mask of confidence that you wear? If you have never considered this, now is a very good time to start!

VIRGO

August 24 – September 23

Venus will be opposing your sign for most of this month which is not necessarily what your analytic mind seeks. It’s very likely a message to let go of a few things and you may get a hefty reminder of this on or just before 16th February when Neptune joins Venus to gang up on you together. Be careful about mislaid items, or money going out of your account.

Everyone is affected differently by these astronomical movements. To really understand what this means for you on a personal level during 2022, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation that is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year.

LIBRA

September 24 – October 23

As Jupiter starts to get comfortable in Aries, your opposite sign, you may feel a bit overwhelmed by its influence. Painful emotions, maybe from your early years, may be brought to the surface through the influence of Chiron but Jupiter may be just exaggerating things, so try not to get things out of proportion. It’s just a passing effect.

SCORPIO

October 24 – November 22

The moon goes over your sign around 12th February which may briefly stir up difficult and painful memories and feelings. These may be so ‘out of the blue’ that you might wonder where they come from. If this feels as if it is triggering something significant in you, this is probably useful stuff to work with in a psychotherapeutic way.

SAGITTARIUS

November 23 – December 22

Actions taken are rather more determined by your emotional state this month than usual. The urge to just do something, anything, should be tempered by asking yourself if they really meet your longer term or more distant aims. So, taking a couple of steps back for some selfreflection of how you feel deep inside before you act is probably a good thing to do. Try yoga!

CAPRICORN

December 23 – January 20

You are wise and cautious thinking because your credibility and authority are important to you. This makes you a bit serious so the intensity that comes with Mercury conjoining Pluto on 10th will make conversations more serious than usual. Don’t let yourself get fobbed off with casual explanations. It’s more important to delve deep into what’s going on under the surface
