Last month stage performances, fireworks, lasers, snow (artificial, of course) and plenty of festive spirit launched Christmas in the Milton Keynes Business Improvement District (BID) on the MyMiltonKeynes stage. The big switch-on of 64,000 LED lights throughout the city centre has really set the seasonal scene.
Now is the perfect time to think about others, as well as our own fun and games, so take a look at YMCA MK’s brand-new soup cook book. As well a deliciously warming recipes, it’s part of a fundraising campaign – you can buy the book and then host a soup supper to raise funds with some friends.
Supporters of Willen Hospice have been busy again, with a group of 31 cycling from Paris to Nice on the French Riviera. In just seven days they covered 650 miles including some impressive Tour de France climbs to raise £58,000. Well done to them and remember the Santa Dash on 18th December.
Now that Christmas is almost here it’s panto time again. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is sure to be a favourite at Milton Keynes Theatre – who could resist Lesley Joseph as the Wicked Queen? You can also look forward to beanstalks, fairies and magic lamps with Jack and the Beanstalk at Northampton’s Derngate or The Castle Theatre in Wellingborough. There’s Potted Panto and Santa’s Christmas Rescue at The Core, Corby, and an alternative Snow White at The Old Savoy in Northampton. There are many other festive frivolities for you to enjoy as well, so be sure to browse the ‘What’s On’ pages.
Don’t forget you can support Transition Town Milton Keynes at any time with projects like the Doughnut Economics Action Group or Planting Up MK. Or, why not take part in a social evening on the first Wednesday of every month?

Families and friends from across Milton Keynes came together outside Midsummer Place to enjoy singing, dancing and some very merry mascots on the MyMiltonKeynes stage, hosted by local radio station, MKFM.
As darkness descended on the city centre, Father Christmas joined the Mayor of Milton Keynes, Mohammed Khan and breakfast show presenters, Darren and Lia as they counted down to the big switch-on of 64,000 LED lights throughout the city centre.
The lights, invested into the city by the BID, and which will brighten central Milton Keynes every day until the New Year are in the shape of parcels, the three kings and wrapped around every tree lining central MK’s boulevard.
Lia Christodoulou, breakfast presenter on MKFM said: “Wow, how incredible to turn on the most epic Christmas Light display in Milton Keynes.”
Successfully mandated by businesses in 2017, MyMiltonKeynes has provided £5 million of additional improvements to central Milton Keynes, creating a safer, cleaner, better connected, smarter and more vibrant city centre for all. The BID is now in an important stage in its history, as it awaits the results of its ballot this November, which will determine if it is able to continue to provide these fantastic FREE events, as well as many other essential improvements.

to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a lightall fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords
are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.
Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been
referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Service With A Smile.
Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have
any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.
When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window
once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

Contributors include Paris House, Namji, Scania, MK College and Warbler of the Wharf. A group of YMCA residents worked alongside the chef at MK College to create a Spiced Butternut Squash and Carrot Soup recipe –the very first YMCA soup!
Remi who works in HomeGround, the YMCA MK Café, created a beetroot and horseradish soup. This is cheap to make as well as being nourishing and colourful. In the current cost of living crisis, you can use red cabbage in the soup if you don’t have much beetroot to make this soup super affordable.
You can support YMCA MK this winter by buying a book or hosting a soup supper. All you need to do is invite some friends around, make a soup from the book and raise money for a local charity. Milton Keynes Council leader Cllr Pete Marland, Deputy Mayor Cllr Mick Legg and Deputy Mayoress Mrs Mandy Legg joined the Milton Keynes Hindu Association’s vice president Ramnikbhai Gohil and hundreds of visitors to enjoy the sight and taste of annakut – ‘a mountain of food’ consisting of hundreds of dishes freshly prepared by devotees, artistically arranged as a devotional offering of the first meal of the New Year made in thanksgiving to God and to seek blessings for the year ahead.
The event was organised by the Hindu organisation BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, which has been serving the Milton Keynes community since 1990. It provides educational, community and spiritual activities for children, youths, families, and the elderly.
This year’s celebrations marked the centenary of the birth of BAPS founder His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, who died in 2016.
Younger children joined the celebrations at Medbourne Community Pavilion, creating a dedicated art zone, exhibition and model making decorations.
“We are proud to witness this year’s celebrations which include a tribute to His Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj,” Cllr Legg told guests.
Diwali and the Hindu New Year bring values of goodwill, charity and harmony across communities. “These deep principles are embodied during these celebrations,” said Mrs Jagruti Bhatt, a volunteer at the children’s activity zone.
Festival ‘waves a magic wand over Milton Keynes and beyond’
Friends and families of all faiths and background come together to celebrate the traditions and rich cultural heritage of the Hindu faith and the vibrancy of sounds, flavours and colours of Diwali – ‘The Festival of Light’ – and the Hindu New Year.
Ladies volunteers thank devotees and visitors
Deputy Mayoress Mandy Legg said:
“Attending the festival of the Hindu New Year and being able to witness the children’s activities exemplified a feeling that Diwali waves a magic wand over Milton Keynes and beyond… Everything is so bright, colourful and beautiful.” BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha in Milton Keynes is part of an international communitybased Hindu organisation affiliated to the United Nations, caring for individuals, families,
and societies through its more than one million members, 55,000 volunteers and 3,850 centres.
In the UK, BAPS is one of the largest and most active Hindu organisations in the country. It is particularly known for its multifarious community outreach activities and the internationally acclaimed BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden, north London.

Pedal power brings home £58k for hospice
Seven days, 650 miles… and £58,000 raised for Willen Hospice.
Agroup of 31 cyclists rode to the challenge to cycle from Paris to Nice on the French Riviera, enjoying the picturesque Maurienne Valley through the French Alps before tackling three unforgiving Tour de France climbs; Col de Saint-Jean, Col du Galibier and Col du Telegraphe.
“This was a fantastic challenge which really pushed and rewarded
the cyclists,” says Willen Hospice’s Challenges fundraiser Dawn Clark, who was part of the support crew on the cycle ride. “Not only should they be proud of themselves for conquering the Paris to Nice ride but they should also be incredibly proud of the amount they managed to raise for Willen Hospice.”
The money is a valuable boost to the hospice’s work providing specialist, compassionate care for people affected by a life-limiting illness. Ms Clark also thanked the support crew and the ride sponsors Incentive Smart, hireful, Corley Cycles, Marcus Jordan, Workwear Pro Direct, VizionWealth and Dawson Group.
> Willen Hospice needs to raise £5.9 million a year and relies on ,local community support for much of those funds. The charity’s next challenge is a trek to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania in January. Find out more at www.willen-hospice.org. uk/Kilimanjaro.

Is a Kitchen re-spray the new way to update and
Many of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially now we have had more time at home lately.
But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.
Now local company FX-SPRAY MK is offering a complete professional paint spray service for kitchens.
It is a quick and simple process that leaves your kitchen looking brand new, says FX-SPRAY MK. The company removes and sprays 90 per cent of the kitchen off site, which means that very little work has to be done in your home, in turn meaning minimal disruption. An average kitchen can be completed within a week and home owners continue to use it during the process.
FX-SPRAY MK only use specialist products and having the latest spray equipment means the company delivers that brand new factory finish. A colour matching service to all major paint brands gives a huge choice - you can even go with a two-colour scheme.

Wicked, but wonderful!
Christmas is almost upon us, and if ever there was a need to come together for some laughter and escapism, the time is now. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is this year’s sure-to-be perfect panto at Milton Keynes Theatre, and it stars Lesley Joseph and Rob Rinder who will reprise their roles as the Wicked Queen and the Man in the Mirror as they both make their debut panto visit to the new city. Pulse’s Sammy Jones met them...
This is the second year that Lesley and Rob will have spent Christmas together on stage, uniting communities in laughter, and bathing them in some much needed feel-good.
“We did Strictly together, and when he was asked to do panto last year, Rob said, ‘Yes, I’d love to, if I can do it with Lesley,’ because he is a friend and I think he trusts me in terms of the quality of the show,” Lesley said.
“We broke box office records last year in Bristol, during a pandemic, which is crazy. We were absolutely thrilled.”
Rob is a fan of Lesley every bit as much as he is a friend.
At the pantomime launch back in the summer, post-photoshoot he swapped his stage attire for a t-shirt emblazoned with Lesley’s face.
“I adore her – I didn’t wear it just for today,” he said at the time, “She is the Beatles of
the panto world. There is no-one better and when you are on the stage she just lifts the whole thing. I learned so much from her last year. When you do something with someone who is really good at it, it makes it better for everyone else.”
Panto might be silly and bright, but those who head up the extravaganza understand the weight on their shoulders – a trip to boo the baddies and be thrilled at the happy endings is often the first time little people have ventured into the theatre.
Those early memories can influence a lifetime of return visits.
“If you can catch a child when they are young, it means you’ve got them for the rest of their life, hopefully. It’s not just something you do off the top of your head, it’s a work of art.”
Lesley has been creating panto memories for the past 30 years, but though she has made plenty of visits to MK Theatre - if you’ve got an early edition of Pulse, she is still here in
December 2022 | MK Pulse Magazine | 32,000 Copies delivered every month door to door across Milton Keynes 14 INTERVIEW
Sister Act - she has never sprinkled fairy magic on our stage.
“I love Matcham theatres which are really old, beautiful, ornate and wonderful, but as modern theatres go, I think this is fabulous, I think it is a great atmosphere here and it’s in a really good place and they run it extremely well. Shows do well here, which means there’s an audience here.
“I love pantomime, I am passionate about it, and I take it really seriously and don’t work with me if you are going to play around,” she warns, before sharing how she keeps the panto machine rolling day after day in her role as the Wicked Queen.
“For me, you have to work with an audience, you have to know when the show is going too slowly and you have to pull the strings in and drive it along.
You are part stand-up, part dramatic actress, part comedy actress, you are telling a story, you are talking to young people, you are talking to old people...
“If you lead the company which I am and have done for many years, which I think is an honour, you have to drive the show through, and you work with the audience, you come out and talk to them and it is wonderful to break the fourth wall, but sometimes you have to pull the fourth wall back, and you think ‘they are going off on one,’ I’m going to pull them in – I’m going to get nasty now.
“You are part stand-up, part dramatic actress, part comedy actress, you are telling a story, you are talking to young people, you are talking to old people...
“With someone like me, after Birds of a Feather people feel that they know you and I can talk to them – and I can flirt with any men who are out there, there is a connection through the fourth wall.
“In this one, there are moments when I can be really funny, and sweet and loveable and then I will suddenly turn on them, ‘voom!’”
Having starred in his own television show, Judge Rinder showed off his fancy footwork competing in Strictly and heading up morning news programme Good Morning Britain, we are used to seeing Rob on the small screen. But this is the new city’s first opportunity to see the Barrister starring as the Man in the Mirror.
2022 has been a typically busy one for Rob, or we should say Mr Rinder MBE – he was the recipient of the award for his services to Holocaust education and awarenesss.
It was all the more special, and rare, as his mother received the same MBE at the same time. They collected their gongs from the then Prince of Wales.
“At Windsor Castle where we collected it, they said that they hadn’t done a two-some for a while like that.
“It was really magic and she deserved it so much,” he said of his mum’s award, “The 45 Aid Society that she runs is so extraordinary as is the amount of work she does. I always feel that I’ve cadged my honour off her coat tails really.
“But above all else what it did was highlight the importance of learning about the
holocaust, not necessarily just as a part of history, but much more especially as part of citizenship, and now a programme that we made, The Holocaust, My Family and Me is being taught in schools.”
It’s an incredible achievement, but right now his focus is on something quite different - perfecting the art of the panto.
He is still learning – but with Lesley at his side, he always has an expert close at hand: “I often ask Lesley for tips, I really do, and

what is nice about her is, much like me, she is all about authenticity over kindness when I’m getting it wrong.”
With only one previous season tucked under his belt, panto is still a new phenomenon for Rob, but he can certainly wax lyrical about it.
“I know that some people, only the really dim ones, will roll their eyes and shrug their shoulders and think, ‘Oh, it’s panto,’ but only the people who are deeply stupid dismiss panto.” he says, “... because precisely like Strictly it has more than just a capacity for tawdry escapism.
“It has the limitless cultural joy of being a piece of theatre that everybody can share in. It is completely inclusive, regardless of background and regardless of age, we have people - four generations sometimes, who get that one opportunity to be transported into that magical world of Christmas.
“It has real value, it matters every time that you go out that it is fresh for everybody and being completely able to share in the delight of a real magical experience, and it can be silly and funny and the audience takes part as well. Being part of a community where people leave a space that you’ve been part of, happier than when they found you? What an absolute privilege to be able to do that.”
And all the better if you can share the experience with pals – MK’s own Greg Rutherford shared in the Strictly Come
Dancing experience with Lesley and Rob, and firm friendships were formed.
Presumably, Greg will be long-jumping in to catch a performance?
“Greg will be here, 100%,” Rob answers, quick as a flash, “He is basically my spiritual husband - and you can print that!”

Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to panto for these four, too...
Paul Chuckle will star as hapless but loveable Oddjob – and he knows a thing or two about raising laughs; with his late brother Barry, they’ve been keeping the nation smiling for decades, and pantomime has been a large part of that.
“Come and see it because it is going to be loads of fun,” he invites, simply.
Mind you, he’s not so sure about his hotel accommodation: “It’s a got a funny little seat in the corner with a hole in it!” he quipped.
Charlotte Haines was part of the recordbreaking team in Bristol last year, and she
will be playing Snow White again this festive season.
Panto in Milton Keynes isn’t a new experience for Charlotte though; she also joined Diversity on stage in MK last year for their final week of performances – with just 24 hours notice. A total pro!
Dale Mathurin was also part of the cast in 2022, and as Prince Charming, he is an instant audience favourite!
“People attach themselves to fairytales – you are always going to remember Prince Charming and you are always going to remember the
Princesses and the Queens. Being a part of some child’s introduction to that kind of world and genre, I do feel a responsibility. “Especially because there will be young kids in the audience that look like me and they will see me as a handsome Prince. I think that’s a projection to put out there.”
Comedian and impressionist Aaron James is set to be all of a Muddles throughout December.
“I did Woking last year, which was Snow White too. I’m hoping it’s the same script as well, which would be handy!” he quipped.

Young adults and the importance of making a Will
Research shows that 70% of the population do not have a Will with adults between the ages of 18 and 34 the biggest offenders.
Tricia Longmore and the wills, trusts and probate team provide effective and proactive guidance when dealing with estates and estate planning.
The main reasons that young adults give for not writing a Will are that they are for older people, they don’t have a lot to leave, and death is a long way off, so they don’t need to plan for it.
So why is a Will important?
A Will is the only way to make sure that your possessions go to the people and causes you care about.
If you die without a Will, you die intestate, and the law decides where your assets go. It also means that there may be more work for your family to do to wind up your affairs.
Artemis House, 4 Bramley Road
Milton Keynes MK1 1PT
“I live with my Mum as I haven’t seen my Dad for years, I don’t need a Will because she will get everything.”
Wrong. The law states that if you die without a spouse or children, your estate will pass to your parents equally, regardless of whether you have a relationship with them or not.
“I live with my partner, I don’t need a Will as they will get everything”
your children, the court may have to become involved, and they may appoint someone who you would not have chosen.
“I don’t have anything to leave!”
You may have more than you think. You may have insurance through your place of work or life insurance.
Once you reach the age of 18, you can make a Will and it doesn’t have to be complicated.
What do I need to do?
Ask yourself some questions and write some notes:
• Who do I want to inherit my money and possessions?
The above information is for general guidance only and does not constitute legal advice.
Heald Solicitors disclaims and excludes any liability in respect of the contents of this article or for action taken based on this information. If you need legal advice, please contact a solicitor.
Wrong. Under the intestacy rules, your partner is not entitled to anything. They may even end up having to claim against your estate for financial support.
“I have a child, but I don’t need a Will as I don’t have anything to put in it”
Wrong. If you have a child, you will want to state who looks after that child if you were to die. If you do not appoint guardians to look after
Wills aren’t just to pass on money and property though. Through a Will you can appoint people to administer your estate, set out what kind of funeral you would like, make sure the care of your children is undertaken by someone you chose, make sure any pets you have are provided for and looked after, make gifts to charities, and leave your possessions to the people you wish them to go to. You can even set out what happens to your social media and other online accounts.
No one knows what the future holds, so it is a good idea to have something in place so you can relax knowing that your loved ones are aware of your wishes and your money and possessions are going to go where you want them to.
• What do I want each person to get?
• Do I want to leave anything to charity?
• Do I have special funeral wishes such as music, a party, an environmentally friendly funeral or colour theme?
Make a list of people you trust to act as:
• Your executors, these are the people who will administer your estate and make sure the right people get the right things
• Guardians for any children
• People who will look after your pets.
Then speak to our friendly team, and we will write a simple Will for you clearly setting out your wishes.

The old curiosity shop
All too often when we visit our local High Streets, we are focused on the next thing 'to do', or are so glued to our mobile phones that we forget to take in our surroundings. And how often do you look up? Take the time to do that in Newport Pagnell and you'll be rewarded by a higgledy piggledy of buildings through the ages. It's a character lacking from our modern, purpose built shopping hubs. It can't be made, it comes only with history and time – and 'Paggers' has more of that than most.
No.38 the High Street is one of the oldest buildings in the town, and possesses all of the associated charm, intrigue, tales and marks of those who have come before us, writes Sammy Jones.
The building dates to the early seventeenth century, and an article produced in 1950 by Warren Dawson, who was a distinguished antiquarian, is wonderfully detailed, and evocative.
He wrote that when the house was built, people living in the town would have remembered the Spanish Armada. The death of Queen Elizabeth I and the Gunpowder Plot were recent news.
If its walls could talk, No.38 would have a great deal to say.
But actually, those walls still offer a great peek into this historically rich property – a survey dating to 2002 by the late local architect and historian Paul Woodfield offers a fascinating insight and confirms its early seventeenth century construction. It was timber framed and built on a medieval burgage plot.
Certainly the building enjoyed many improvements over the centuries; like the 'high quality architectural treatment' afforded the first floor in the 18th century, which shows itself with the marble hearth of a fireplace.
At the time of that restoration, some doors, panelling and fittings were re-used in the upper rooms. So the careful craftsmanship of the original carpenter survives centuries on.
But for all the oddities, curious spaces and a bricked up cellar which may harbour more secrets, the property has plenty to be going on with.
Rumours are that one of the beams in the store came from a ship. Maybe, maybe not – historians argue the authenticity of these facts which are frequently associated with historic buildings, but are often fabrications. Often, but not always, and the beam in question is markedly dissimilar to anything else in the building.
One thing that most certainly is real, and is a pretty special survivor is the original 17th century box-framed staircase, and it is a particularly detailed example, at that.
December 2022 | MK Pulse Magazine | 32,000 Copies delivered every month door to door across Milton Keynes 26 LOCAL HISTORY
The aforementioned architectural study mentions that it is 'constructed on square newels with bun caps and turned finials below.'
The Jacobean staircase – of black oak –goes to the top of the house, but the lower flight has been replaced. The staircase occupying the higher levels is original.
Though not as detailed, many buildings in the High Street had similar stairs. It is the belief that once upon a time there would have been a carpentry 'school' in the area, which would have been a hive of activity working to deliver for local properties.
In 1938, the building to the right of No.38 was demolished and replaced with shops and four flats, one of which I called home for a time.
But I would far rather the 'interesting timber framed building' that pre-dated it was still with us. Sadly, the Taylor family (responsible for Taylors mustard, a family with its own long history with the town) who owned the property decided otherwise.
No.38 is a great survivor in a town that has been stripped of some of its most historic charm – it has been much altered in the last century; razing parts of St John Street in the 1950s was a travesty, and there are many other buildings lost to developments which are mourned by those old enough to remember the lost beauty.
Curiously, they call it 'progress'.
Fire has also played its part in robbing us of more buildings, and then there are those that have been left to crumble.
The town owes the late John Clare a debt for ensuring that No.38 is still present today.
The antique dealer appreciated the beauty of the property housing his family business, and he had the foresight to faithfully restore the building – which included removing the heavy rendering from the facade.
That work, carried out in 1950, revealed the original timber framework you see today.
The Connye family, headed by John Connye,
were wool merchants and drapers and their name appears in the town from the mid-sixteenth century. John owned No.36 High Street, which he left to his son Mathias, in 1586.
In 1607, Mathias purchased the adjoining property, No.38 as we know it today, although evidence has been discovered of an earlier building on the same site.
In 1614, Matthias gave the property to his son Edmund in a marriage settlement. Edmund was also a draper, and though No.38 would pass through a number of successive owners, remarkably it remained as a drapery for well in excess of 200 years.
In fact, its business in textiles is believed to have only ceased in 1885, when the owner at that time, Charles Joseph Redden, retired – selling the shop to Richard Wadhams who was a saddler and harness maker. When he too retired, in 1901, No.38 was sold at auction at The Swan Hotel.
Prospective purchasers would have been able to peer through the front window and across the road at the property they were eyeing up.
That sale, on June 19, saw Newport man Joseph Gilbert Austin take charge, ushering in a new era, for his business was as a jeweller, optician and china dealer.
When Austin retired in 1929, it was the aforementioned Mr Clare who took over the store and acted as a custodian in the best sense. He also continued the more recent business, working as an antique dealer and restorer. The family business carried through to the 1960s.
Since then, the shop has enjoyed serving its community with a number of tenants. Perhaps most memorably it was the bed shop, Upstairs Downstairs, and later a bridal shop, but in 2014 it entered a new chapter of its life, as a vintage emporium, called simply No.38.
Pip Handy is the owner of the business, which has more than 50 traders operating

When she walked past the property in 2014, Pip announced the venture to her husband Mick; “That's my shop,” declared, and set about making it a reality.
“It is perfect for a vintage shop as it's full of character dating,” she said, “We are very proud of the emporium and feel that we do the building justice by being within it.”
As with any building of great age, there are the occasional odd nooks and crannies, things that can't be explained, and tales passed down the line; was there really a serving maid who vanished from the building after being attacked by a traveller she had wronged, or is this just fiction?
Regardless, it appears that some of those who plied their trade there in years gone by are still keeping an eye on their past concerns: “We have dogs come in that won't go into certain areas of the shop, and they start barking at the air,” Pip said.
Pip and another customer have both had their arms pulled back to stop them walking across the shop, and shoppers have their own stories to tell.
Pip added: “Items have been caught flying off shelves on CCTV, and we have had a number of people walk in and tell us they can feel two ghostly presences...”

‘Prep schools are amazing places’: New head relishes Swanbourne appointment
Nick Holloway pledges to enhance the educational experience of his pupils when he takes the reins at the start of the 2023-24 academic year.
Swanbourne House School has appointed Nick Holloway as its new head. Mr Holloway, pictured, will take up his role at the start of the new academic year in September 2023 but will work closely with the school near Winslow for the next two terms.
He is currently deputy head of Brambletye School in Sussex, having begun his teaching career at Cothill House in Oxfordshire. Before switching to teaching, Mr Holloway worked in finance for 12 years at HBOS plc.
Until September, Swanbourne will continue to be led by acting head Simone Mitchell, the school’s deputy head.
“I look forward to working closely with the staff, pupils and parents to promote and enhance the values and the ethos of the school and further develop the educational experience of the pupils,” says Mr Holloway. “Prep schools are amazing places and I am committed to developing the exceptional all-round education offered at Swanbourne House.”
Swanbourne House is an independent day and boarding school set in 55 acres of Buckinghamshire countryside.
Last year, the school joined with Stowe and Winchester House in Brackley to form The Stowe Group of Schools. Membership of The Stowe Group gives Swanbourne House pupils access to a combined site of more than 800 acres with top-class educational and cocurricular facilities.
Dr Anthony Wallersteiner, head of The Stowe Group, says: “We had a very strong field of candidates for the role of head of Swanbourne and Nick impressed the selection panel with the clarity of his strategy and vision. He has acquired a wealth of educational and managerial experience from Brambletye and Cothill and can draw on his previous career in finance.
“Nick is committed to building on the many existing strengths of Swanbourne. I am confident that Swanbourne will continue to flourish and thrive with Nick’s leadership.”

Proof we can design the future we want
If ever there was a time for fresh, bold, and visionary thinking – for reimaging everything - it is now. Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition movement and author of From What if to What Next, often invites people to do a time travel exercise that stretches your imagination. In it, he asks you to imagine what life is like for you in 2030 in a utopian future that is the result of us having done everything we possibly can in these intervening years to make it a future we want to live in.
Imagining the future
Having done that exercise over 100 times, Rob Hopkins has found that the responses are always the same - “The birdsong is louder”. “There are far less cars”. “The air smells so much cleaner”. “The streets are full of kids playing”. “There is a strong sense of community”.
An imagined future made real
One place that has made a reality of the future that they dreamt of in that exercise is Vauban, a district of Freiburg in Germany. Home to over 3,000 people, it is one of the most ambitious, eco-friendly, and best-known car-free areas in Europe. There, local people wanted something different, and campaigned for 3 years to ensure that their vision happened. The result was a planning process that was inclusive of future residents’ ideas and dreams, and that was expanded to include social and ecological issues of concern to residents.
The final scheme was designed to have the site serviced by an amazing tram system that has regular trams running into the main city, removing the need to own a private car, and giving bikes and pedestrians priority. As well as the beautiful car free lanes lined with huge trees and a swale to return runoff water to the water
The Vauban - car free area
table, the plans also prioritised housing cooperatives, individual self-builders, and community building groups over private commercial developers and investors. This has meant that most of the houses are built to very high energy efficiency standards, many to Passivhaus level, with solar panels everywhere, and a Combined Heat and Power scheme that is augmented by that solar power.
Designed with zest
Unlike most modern housing developments in the UK which feel inherently stingy with space, the Vauban is designed with vision and generosity, allowing room for abundant nature in playgrounds, parks, and gardening areas, lots of social enterprise buildings for public use, and complementary artistic touches. All the different apartment blocks are in different styles and different colours for example, where most apartments have plant-filled balconies and inner courtyards filled with fruit and nut trees. And all of this, in a place where cars are the exception not the rule, makes the area buzz with the vibrant sounds of people and nature over all else. (For pics and recordings, visit our website.)
What we can do
Like this pioneering example of a cocreated place to live for community and the ecological future, the Transition movement is about us firing up our imaginations with possibilities and ideas for how we can make exciting, playful, and inspired ways of living together more sustainably.

Gingerbread chocolate ganache tartlets
Our recipes come from MK Pulse food writer, Sofia Gallo, an acclaimed local chef, food writer and teacher at Milton Keynes Cookery School. She has recently won the ICG Cooking Competition and was a contestant on BBC’s Masterchef.
Follow Sofia: Instagram: @in_cucinacon_sofia FB: incucinaconsofia www.lamiacucina.co.uk METHOD 1. Sieve all the dry ingredients and set aside. 2. In a bowl, cream together butter and sugar, add the golden syrup, the egg yolk and slowly the dry ingredients. 3. Combine well in a smooth dough and start rolling between two pieces of parchment paper to about a 5p coin thickness. 4. Once the pastry is ready, line the tartlet cases, prick the bottom with a fork and let these rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes. I find it easier to roll first and then cool, but you can place the dough in the fridge to set, before rolling and shaping, if this is your preferred method.
5. Preheat your oven to 1800 C/Gas Mark 4. Blind bake the tartlet cases for about 10 minutes and a further 5 once the baking beans have been removed. 6. While these are cooling down, prepare your ganache by warming up the cream to a warm temperature, being mindful not to boil it. Pour over the chocolate and leave for a minute.
7. Gently whisk the cream and the chocolate using a spatula or hand whisk, and add the butter to obtain a shiny finish. 8. Divide the ganache between the cases and place in the fridge until set. If you have leftover pastry, make some festive decorations and why not use some edible gold spray to embellish? This tasteful dessert can be prepared in advance.

Strike gastronomic gold at this hidden gem
I’ve given props to Cornwall Place Kitchen’s daytime café in a previous edition of MK Pulse but, having recently been lucky enough to attend a Chef’s Table event in their upstairs evening space, I couldn’t resist talking about this hidden gem all over again.
If you don’t already know, Cornwall Place Kitchen (CPK) is an eco-conscious coffee shopcum-fine dining establishment, only ten minutes from Milton Keynes in Buckingham, in the lovely Cornwall Place mews off the high street. Head chef George Spires and restaurant manager Sarah King are the masterminds behind this innovative dining venture – George is the brains behind the kitchen while Sarah heads up all things front of house.
It is important to say that this meal was complimentary and while I have been lucky enough to travel extensively over the years and eat in some fantastic restaurants, this meal was genuinely one of the most memorable for many reasons but predominantly for the superb quality of each ingredient and every unforgettable course.
We arrived at CPK for our private dining experience on a particularly warm evening and the first thing to note was that only a handful of us had actually met before and I was certainly a little worried. Dining with strangers is anxietyinducing for me at the best of times but I was concerned that eating in such an intimate environment would perhaps be too much yet, as soon as I walked through the front door of CPK, my mind was put at ease.
Sarah talked us through the evening and explained that the original concept had always been to create a homely environment for their private dining experience, with perhaps less of a focus on lunchtime coffees and toasties. She explained that CPK supports local wherever possible, recognising the importance as a small business of supporting other small businesses; our menu on this evening would celebrate seasonal, quality, hand-picked and local ingredients, while pairing drinks would highlight English producers, brewers and distillers.
Our apéritif was a Sloe Berry Fizz, featuring one of my all-time favourite spirits (local or otherwise!) Bucks Brothers Pomegranate Sloe Gin, served in a sugar-rimmed champagne coupe. Just sweet enough without being too much, this was the perfect way for conversations with somewhat-strangers to start flowing. Then came the canapé: a Bloody Mary Tapioca Puff. As a bit of a tomato juice-phobe, I was tentative, but frankly it was the perfect way to set up your appetite for the plethora of savoury offerings ahead.
The first course was a Blue Cheese Scone, with cheese sourced from local food market Cheese on Towcest’, served with mushroom clotted cream and onion rum jam. As a huge blue cheese fan, I felt perhaps that the scone itself could’ve packed more of a punch but I appreciated the need to keep it subtle to cater for all palates. The umami flavour of the mushroom cream converted even the mushroom-haters in the group but the star here for me was the onion rum jam – sweet and tangy and the perfect way to complement all of the other elements.
Next up was our first food and wine pairing. This special edition pale rosé from local Gawcott estate Chafor, picked up from Buckinghambased wine shop Cavavin, was perfectly delicate alongside our fish course: Mackerel Pate served on an Onion Waffle with Beetroot and Celeriac. As we had all been getting to know each other through the previous courses, this was my first opportunity to really see the craftsmanship behind the cooking and plating and, I believe, one of the biggest selling points of this experience: seeing Chef George at work. I enjoyed watching how the plate came together just as much as I loved eating every single morsel.
What followed were probably my two favourite dishes of the evening and what may possibly go down as the nicest red wine I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. First up: Mushroom Risotto with a Cheese Soufflé, Jus (using the same red wine the dish was paired with) and a Thyme Cracker. George really knocked it out of the ballpark here – a truly elegant dish that somehow struck that balance between real comfort food and elevated dining.
Now the wine – a wine which I instantly purchased online as soon as I returned home that evening – was absolutely sublime: The ‘Penny Red’ from Staffordshire-based Halfpenny Green Wine Estate was out of this world.
I don’t claim to be a wine buff by any means but this wine was rich and chocolatey and had all of us around the table absolutely hooked. This dish was followed by the meaty main with pork sourced from Buckingham-based butcher Smith & Clay: Pork Loin with Ragout, Dauphinoise, Parmesan and Parsnip which, despite appearing a little dry, ended up being so deliciously succulent.
Next up was a Blood-Orange Margarita Pop – a brilliantly boozy palate cleanser in the form of an ice lolly – followed by the dessert: a Chocolate Delice with Beetroot Marshmallow, Smoked Cream and White Chocolate, served with a Rum Old Fashioned and, last but by no means least, the mignardise: sweet and salty Fudge. The dessert, by those around the table with a sweet tooth, was dubbed the ‘best ever,’ and I wasn’t far from agreeing here.

I genuinely can’t remember the last time I had such a wonderfully relaxed and enjoyable evening. From being able to man the Spotify playlist all night, continuing friendships and making new ones to eating some of the most flavoursome and exquisite food I’ve had the pleasure of trying, I would recommend CPK’s private dining events to anyone and everyone.

Foliage for festive times
It’s one of the most appealing of all festive sights; a Christmas wreath hung on a front door, giving cheer to passers by, and welcoming visitors to the home.
Many of us buy wreaths each year, and some of us book onto those ‘learn how to make your own’ sessions, which can be a lovely way to share in the creativity with others – and with a seasonal cup of mulled wine and a cheeky mince pie, it’s a very sociable thing to do.
But really, wreaths aren’t that hard to make from scratch. You just need a nice selection of foliage; long-lasting greenery like eucalyptus, fir, conifer and spruce.
Holly is often used in wreaths, but you don’t need the berries – our feathered friends will use those for nutrition during the cold months,
and their need is greater than ours. If your holly is berry bare, it doesn’t matter.
Don’t be afraid to add other colour too; Fallen oak leaves that have browned look magnificent cutting through the many shades of green for a real contrast.
You might have the necessary foliage in your garden, but if not, forage responsibly.
You can also make your own wreath ring by twisting willow and vines into that necessary circular shape, or purchase a metal one from your local florist – who will also be
Top Tip
...
Lots of people bring flowers into the home at Christmas – orchids and poinsettias are popular choices, but a Christmas cactus can be fabulous too. Super easy to maintain, the cacti originated in the Brazilian rainforests, and naturally they like humidity – our selection thrive in the kitchen, but they will be just as at home in the bathroom.
These plants work up a thirst, but never allow them to sit in water – stem rot is the enemy.
In fact, you should only water the base of your plant once the soil has dried out.
Ours have withstood some pretty dramatic times and come back brighter – if you treat them well they will reward you with beautiful blooms; the plants can deliver an abundance of flowers.
And they aren’t just for Christmas –they’ll last for decades.
able to set you up with some garden twine or paddle wire necessary for holding that foliage in place.
The size of your wreath is down to the size of your door, and personal choice, but the art of making it is the same regardless.
Foliage needs to be arranged into small bunches, which you can either tie together with the wire, or fix straight onto the wreath by winding the wire securely around the bottom of each bunch.
Remember the leaves aren’t being watered, hence the need to use evergreens which will serve you for longer, but even so, you’ll need to secure them tightly – they will shrink a little as they dry, and you don’t want a wilting wreath after a week or two!
Take your time as you fix the stems in place, ensuring the space in the centre of your wreath keeps its circular shape, and the foliage and stems completely cover the wreath ring. Placing each bunch over the bottom of the previous bunch will give a continuous aesthetic – and that’s what you need to aim for.
Every wreath has its own charm, so treat it that way – don’t be uniform with the greenery; there are so many textures and colours and it’s lovely to mix them and allow everything to shine.
Foliage looks fabulous on its own, but if you do want to add more colour and texture – and haven’t already used berries – remember that pine cones are wonderfully abundant and look great, too.
Just use any ‘additions’ sparingly to set the wreath off, rather than complicate it.
Happy designing!

Astylish insulated roof tiled roof can now replace transparent glass roofs which have been the norm for conservatories for many years.
Multi-award-winning T&K Home Improvements are leading the way in the innovative roof styles which not only look great but will insulate your home and significantly reduce energy costs from older roofs. A change in building regulations has enabled the reliable and trusted brand to launch the new product range – T&K’s Insulate+ Replacement Roof system.
Until recently, a conservatory roof was required to have a minimum 75% transparency. While this ensured the space was flooded with natural light it also meant the conservatory would be far too hot in summer and too cold in winter to use. The new solid roof system being launched is a stylish alternative which are tailor made to fit the existing framework so a conservatory can be transformed with minimal disruption to an all-year-round living space.
Thermally efficient transparent vents can also be added to the new roof to create more light and circulation of air in the summer months
Adrian Timbers, Sales and Marketing Manager, said: “The changes in building regulations are great news for homeowners looking to update their conservatories to use.
“The insulated alternative will transform a conservatory into a contemporary extension which can be used all year round whilst reducing energy costs, carbon emissions and increasing the value of their home. Increased security and noise reduction are also other great benefits from transforming your tired conservatory roof.
‘The insulated alternative will transform a conservatory into a contemporary extension which can be used all year round whilst reducing energy costs’
“It is now possible to have a living space that stays cool in the summer, warm in the winter and, at the same time, make significant reductions in energy bills. The continuing pressure on the price of materials and manufacturing means this a good time to buy rather than delaying the decision and then finding in the coming months that it will cost a lot more to make the changes, and with paying for a new roof monthly it makes it more affordable”
T&K guarantees the work unconditionally for ten years with the fitting undertaken by the family-run company’s team of experienced fitters.

Paired back perfection
Christmas is typically a time of excess, full of extravagance and glitz. Each year, gifts seem to get ever more intricate and expensive, pre-lit trees are produced in a vast array of colours, styles are updated from previous years to suit the prevailing trends. Advances in technology mean new and improved indoor and outdoor lighting options become available, controlled by the touch of a button or the click of an app. With so many opportunities to overspend, it’s not surprising that more than half of the respondents to a Which? questionnaire expressed that they had concerns about this coming Christmas. Indeed, in a recent survey by American Express, 86% of millennials (aged 23 to 38) spent more money on Christmas last year than they planned to. Of those who overspent, about one in five (21%) went over budget by approximately £500 or more.1 And in other research by YouGov, it was discovered that in 2019 (our last ‘normal’ Christmas) the average Brit spent £1,116 across the Christmas period.
Whilst your default might be to leave out some presents for the wider family or limit children to a maximum spend, gifts are not the easiest areas to cut back on as it is in our nature to want treat those we love and give children a Christmas to remember.
A much more manageable and achievable way to limit our spend is to switch to a more sustainable and paired back level of Christmas décor. With a little creativity and a willingness to improvise, homemade, salvaged or foraged decorations can be just as magical as the bought equivalent and are undoubtedly more unique and original.
Seek out inspiration on Pinterest, or watch tutorial videos on YouTube and TikTok. With a little imagination, even the simplest pine cone, jam jar and glitter combination can be used to create a pretty snow globe. Natural materials are ideal for Christmas decorations. Think wood, foliage, glass, metal, card, string, rope, cloth, linen or even home baked goods such as biscuits and cookies.
Driftwood, branches, twigs, pine cones, pallets or crates, combine any of them with some greenery, a candle or some battery fairy lights to give them a seasonal look. Hang bell, Christmas tree or holly shaped biscuits from a multi-stemmed branch or use the metal shape cutters on their own as decorations instead. Twigs can be tied together with twine to create a star shape with glitter added to make it sparkle. Glass bottles look great at any time of the year and work well on their own, but they can look

especially elegant at Christmas when combined in a small display with soft linen, dried whole fruits such as oranges or pomegranates, or with aromatic cloves and cinnamon sticks.
Christmas tree prices are expected to escalate this year with labour, supply and Brexit all having put pressure on availability last year. If you haven’t already purchased an artificial tree, then December 2022 may well be the time for you. If you don’t like the idea of having a fake tree, then why not visit a local garden

centre and ask which are the varieties of real tree that you can plant in the garden and re use each year. Another alternative would be to make a homemade tree. Just do an online search for ‘pallet Christmas trees’ if you’re short of inspiration! Other options could involve suspending paper cut Christmas trees or kirigami or origami shapes from coat hangers hung on the back of a door, from a picture hook, on a chimney breast or in a window.
If you live in an urban environment, do not have access to parks or open spaces or lack the time to dedicate to producing hand-made options then try second hand selling sites such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay, Depop, Secondhand and Vinted.
Freecycle, Olio and Gumtree might provide used decorations or crafting materials for free in return for collecting them, alternatively why not offer your Facebook or Instagram friends a swap, your old decorations in return for theirs, as a novel way to gain a new look without having to travel very far.
If you like the idea of hand crafting items or have children that enjoy being creative, save on expensive and typically non-recyclable, shiny wrapping paper by using brown paper to which they could add a stamp, pretty, colourful ribbon, personalised tag or drawing.
When it comes to styling the house, be mindful that less is more. Keep it natural and understated by using as much greenery, glass and wood as possible, then give selected arrangements more prominence by adding a colourful ribbon or metallic bauble. Mirrors reflect light and can be used to give prominence to smaller arrangements. Tall candles can give height to a display and can make excellent alternatives to advent calendars with the use of a fine tipped marker to add the numbers 1-24 from top to bottom.
This Christmas, in the face of the cost of living crisis, high energy bills and uncertainty about the economic climate in 2023, it’s essential that we all remember that having baubles in matching colours, illuminated reindeers in the garden and expensive presents under the tree is unlikely to be what we remember most about Christmas 2022.
Doug Hyde artist profile: Meet the man behind the smile
Since Doug Hyde’s first collection was published in 2003, the smile he introduced us to has become iconic and the popularity of his work has continued to climb.
His characters have a childlike appeal and his style captures a warmth and comfort that draws us into a truly joyful world. While this style has been consistent throughout Doug’s work, every new collection he releases brings something slightly different for us to explore and enjoy.
The Life
Born in Bristol in 1972, Doug Hyde created paintings for family and friends in his spare time before releasing his first collection to the public. Despite his own reservations, in 2005 - just a couple of years after releasing his first collection - Doug was named the UK’s biggestselling artist and described by the BBC as the UK’s most popular living artist.
Doug’s work continues to be inspired by family and friends - he tells how the Masters of Disguise collection was influenced by, “My son’s request for a painting of Spiderman combined with my own love of vintage concepts to take me back to the ‘70s”. And the Rural Retreat collection grew from the new life he and his family created with their move from Bristol to Gloucestershire.
This countryside living has provided Doug and his family with a very different perspective on life, yet his focus on those closest to us means the visions he shares in his works has retained the same warmth and affection we love.
As well as three children, Doug’s family now includes Nancy the Great Dane, a herd of Alpaca, chickens and eight cats. While he explains the expansion of their entourage has been - at times - unexpected, he explains, “The animals are a great way to make the most of your environment as they force you to go outside whatever the weather. Checking up and locking them in last thing at night is a lovely way to finish the day.”
The Work
Having published his first work almost 20 years ago, Doug Hyde says that he still creates art for the same reason he did then, “because it is my passion; because I love it.”
His style is clearly recognisable, with welcoming smiles and open arms conveying a positivity and warmth we’re all drawn to. The combination of bright colours, engaging characters and intimate moments bring to mind illustrations of childhood, which may go some way to explaining the appeal his work has across the generations.
Recognising the confidence and reassurance he has gained from his many collectors, Doug has declared his gratitude to them, saying, “I feel very fortunate that you like and relate to my drawing style, technique, humour and sense of fun – we share a connection and an enjoyment in art and perhaps in life as well.” He does, however, also recognise a need to forget about those who are buying his work when he is creating, ensuring that his pieces are directed by his passion.
The comfort and care resonating through his work are provoked by the positive emotional responses Doug captures. It is no surprise that he has chosen to make use of these instinctive tender responses to support organisations which are important to him. Over the years Doug has used his artwork and creativity in a number of ways to raise money and awareness for charities such as Children in Need, the NSPCC and local organisations Families for Children, St Peter’s Hospice and Look Good, Feel Better.
As his life has changed, Doug tells us that his work also changes and evolves with new ideas constantly flowing. We see that within his collections, with characters in new settingsthese exciting developments encourage us to wonder what will come next!
The Future
Doug Hyde has produced work which comes from the heart and reaches out to those who see it. While the familiarity of his characters and style are reassuring, the new stories and variety in his use of different media (sculpture, print, neon and more), give us new ideas to explore.

Remembrance Day and a visit to local business Nifty Lift
Remembrance Day & Remembrance Sunday
On Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday, I had the opportunity to pay my respects to all those who gave their lives in war and conflict as well as commemorating all the military servicemen and women in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. It was an honour to lay a wreath at the memorials located at the MK Rose, Bletchley and Stony Stratford. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.
Niftylift
Since my last article, I visited Niftylift in Shenley Wood to meet the owner, Roger Bowden. It was a great opportunity to get an update on the business and their future plans to grow. This meeting also provided me with an opportunity to hear how the Government’s latest announcements and support packages will impact their business as well as hearing their thoughts and ideas on what the Government can be doing to help their industry. I will be feeding in their points and concerns to ministerial colleagues in HM Treasury.
McColl’s Store Closure
Recently, I was informed that the McColl’s store in the Bletchley Town Centre is to permanently close, following Morrison’s takeover of McColl’s. Whilst some McColl’s stores will receive significant investment and be transformed into Morrison Daily’s, I am disappointed to learn that the Queensway store is not involved in these plans. Subsequently, I have written to the Chief Finance Officer to express my disappointment at this news.
With the local investment through the Towns Fund Deal and the East West Rail, I believe this will be a missed opportunity for Morrison’s so I hope that they will reconsider their decision.
Petrol Prices in
MK
Also, I have been made aware that petrol stations across Milton Keynes are charging a higher price for petrol compared to neighbouring areas. On the back of this, along with Ben Everitt MP, we have written to the Competition and Markets Authority and to BP to raise our concerns over the significant regional and local variations in petrol prices with Milton Keynes seeing much higher prices than neighbouring Aylesbury and Northampton, and even London. We hope those in charge of petrol prices share our determination to ease the impact of the global increase in the rise of living by ensuring fair fuel prices at a local level.
As we approach the Christmas Recess, me and my office will be monitoring the email inbox and the phones. If you have an urgent issue or query, please do get in touch on the provided details and one of us will be in contact with you to see what we can do.

Knife Angel comes to MK
December officially marks the month of action against violence here in Milton Keynes, and I am pleased that Milton Keynes City Council is working with partners to bring the Knife Angel – a 27ft monument made up of 100,000 bladed articles – to our city.
Stadium MK will host the National Monument Against Violence and Aggression, known as the Knife Angel, and it will be near to the DoubleTree hotel entrance for the duration of the month. Created in collaboration with all 43 UK police forces, the Home Office, antiviolence groups and hundreds of families who have been affected by knife crime, the monument is a symbol of the nation’s intolerance to violence and aggression. It was created by the British Ironwork Centre by sculptor Alfie Bradley to highlight the impact knife crime has on people, families and communities.
Aside from hosting the knife angel, the month of action will see a range of intervention programmes run throughout the month by colleagues from the City Council, Thames Valley Police, the Safety Centre and other local organisations.
There will be workshops, competitions and activity days taking place to educate young people about the risks and heartbreak of getting involved in crime. I’d encourage everybody to come together to support the initiative, whether it be by getting involved with the upcoming activities or visiting the Knife Angel sculpture to further raise awareness.

Merry Christmas! After two years of Christmas being disrupted by the pandemic I hope you all have a lovely festive season with your friends and family. Looking back on 2022, it’s certainly been an historic year for Milton Keynes after we were (finally) awarded city status and I really am so proud to be your Member of Parliament in the year we achieved it.
I know the global rise in the cost of living continues to be the main worry for most families so please be assured I am continuing to listen to local people and to businesses about their views.
At a meeting with the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt last month I raised a number of concerns and suggestions with him from meetings including a business roundtable with local blogger Sophie etc., as well as many other businesses I’ve met recently.
There has been a significant package of Government support to help those most-in-need and people on means-tested benefits should now have received both payments of the £650 Cost Of Living grant which will have been provided to 30,100 families across Milton Keynes.
As I mentioned in my previous column if you need to check any support you may be eligible for please do visit the Government’s Help For Households website: https://helpforhouseholds.campaign.gov.uk/
Vote For MK North’s Best South Asian Restaurant
You can help me find Milton Keynes North’s best South Asian restaurant and make it my nomination for this year’s Tiffin Cup The Tiffin Cup seeks to promote the importance of South Asian restaurants throughout the UK and receives over 100 nominees from MPs and Peers each year. It’s been a tough few years for hospitality because of the pandemic so this is a fantastic opportunity to show off the incredible restaurants we have across Milton Keynes
Submit your nomination on my website beneveritt.com by Friday 16th December.
Culture Funding For MK Gallery and MK Arts Centre
I’m absolutely delighted to confirm MK Gallery and MK Arts Centre have both received funding from the Government as part of its plans to help level up arts and culture across the country.
MK Gallery has been boosted by £390,360 of funding, while MK Arts Centre will receive £99,803 – providing a long-term investment in our country’s talent and supporting the next generation of creators, performers and artists. I have visited both of these amazing venues in the city over the last year and know just how much of an impact this funding will have on them.
Government Funded Maple Centre Opens At MK Hospital
The brand new state-of-the-art Maple Centre has opened at Milton Keynes University Hospital after it was backed by £10 million of Government funding. It will provide same day emergency care for patients and enable them to receive treatment without being admitted to hospital and includes a new 26 bedded ward. It was brilliant to be given a tour of the new facility by the hospital’s CEO Joe Harrison. The attention to detail in every aspect of the building was impressive and it’s really going to provide a significant boost to healthcare in Milton Keynes. I want to thank the team at Milton Keynes University Hospital and those involved in the wider community for the exceptional work they have put into this project over the last few years.
Also this month…
• I’ve been visiting local businesses as part of Guide Dogs’ Open Doors campaign offering them stickers for their shop windows after I was told more than 80% of guide dog owners have been illegally refused access to a service across the country
• It was an honour to be able to speak to Sixth Form students at Stantonbury School about how Parliament works and the day-to-day life of an MP, as well as taking part in a Q&A on housing, the whips operation and more
• After months of meetings and working with residents I’m delighted the Environment Agency has now cleared the river in Newport Pagnell of weeds and vegetation. I managed to secure the agreement back in May after involving the Environment Minister.

Three winter motoring essentials
ADAM TUDOR-LANE offers up three products to help keep your car windscreen frost-free and charged up this winter.
Around this time of year, I see many ‘Car essentials for winter’ articles. They go to great lengths in advising you to carry a snow shovel, foil blankets, tow ropes, torches, a first aid kit, and while the latter two are definitely handy to have in your car, the majority of us Brits face just two issues come winter.
A frozen windscreen or a dead car.
So here are my three highly advisable winter essentials to make life easier and keep you on the road this winter.
Ice scraper
Put that long-forgotten store card back in your wallet or purse and keep the kettle indoors. Investing in a decent ice scraper is one of those things you always put off. “How much for an ice scraper?! I only use it a few times a year”. Yes, but buy cheap, and you buy twice, or three, or four times. A decent scraper will last a lifetime.
Swedish Ice Scraper – around £14, it’s beautifully designed, strong as anything and made from laser-cut recycled acrylic glass with diamond-polished edges to slice through frost and ice. There’s also a wiper blade cleaning slot; how’s that for fancy?
Get one. You won’t regret it.
Windscreen cover
If you don’t fancy being up an hour early to squeeze in those extra ten minutes needed to clear the windscreen of frost (where does that time go?!), just get a cover.
Then all you have to do is check the weather that night, see if it’s going to be a minus number, go outside, put the windscreen cover on and look smug as you remove it the next morning and be on your way.
I’ve personally used a Maypole windscreen cover for years. It comes in a handy little pouch and folds up incredibly small. What makes it stand out from others though are the small winglets that have a piece of rigid plastic in each side. You open your car door, close these in, and it stays in place with no problem.
Price - £7.95. And I must have had mine a good 10 years. Worthy investment – but still get an ice scraper for those nights you forget to check or need to clear the side and back windows.
Trickle charger
Batteries don’t like the cold. EV drivers will know this with great pain.
As the temperature drops, the chemical process inside car batteries slows down. This reduces its ability to hold charge resulting in less power to turn the starter motor and fire your car into life. If your battery is less than three years old, you’re likely fine, but winter can become a challenge for anything around the five-year-plus mark.
A trickle charger is the best way to look after your battery and prevent this. Plug it into the mains, and it will slowly and safely charge your battery. This will keep it in good health over the chilly months. Now you don’t have to keep it connected all the time. One day a week should be enough to keep you topped up.
You can, of course, replace your battery, but at £22 for a trickle charger like the Ring Automotive RSC804, that’s probably around 1/3rd of the cost, and it will help stretch your battery’s life.
Find it on Amazon by scanning the QR code
I’ve used all these products myself, so I can vouch for them, and I believe they’re all the average motorist needs to see them through winter. All for less than £45.

Film Reviews
The Tragedy of Macbeth
FILM OF THE MONTH -
Star Rating: 4/5
Perhaps the real tragedy of this latest filmed version of William Shakespeare’s Scottish play is being stuck on Apple’s own streaming service AppleTV+, amidst its still pretty small range of films (at least compared to Netflix, Amazon, et al) without enjoying a full cinema release. Made by one half of the Coen brothers, the indie directors behind great films like Fargo and No Country for Old Men, Macbeth’s brutal, underhanded quest for power evokes its stage origins while still being spookily atmospheric.
Stars a terrific Denzel Washington as the warrior bewitched by prophecy and trying to reckon with his own desire for power while being manipulated by his wife. Long-time Coen brothers collaborator Frances McDormand electrifies as Lady Macbeth in her chilly, devious belief in the profit of her and her husband’s murders
and deceit which then festers and haunts her. Even the slightest doubt about two Americans playing a very Scottish couple melts away from their very first lines. The film’s shot fully in black and white with huge, sharp shadows in the castle sets that remind a lot of Orson Welles’ own classic 1940s version. Some viewers might prefer the very bloody, gritty, earthly-coloured 2015 version starring Michael Fassbender as Macbeth over this overtly “stage-y”, even “artsy” depiction. Washington’s Macbeth isn’t as raw or openly menacing, and that’s fitting for this more overtly staged version where he delivers Shakespeare’s manifold soliloquies with exquisite emotional complexity. As bright light and dark shadows live side by side in this version, so truth easily succumbs to lies and murder. ✪
Star Rating: 1.5/5
Speaking of great acting now showing on Apple TV+, Jennifer Lawrence once again impresses in Causeway, an understated drama that’s a far cry from the blockbusters she used to star in. Playing Lynsey, a military veteran trying to pick up her life back home in New Orleans after a traumatic injury, she’s lost none of her acting prowess. Be warned, this is sombre stuff, and the relationship she strikes with James (Brian Tyree Henry) is hardly the stuff of romance (by design). Still, it’s well paced at just ninety minutes, featuring earned emotional turns that avoid any cheap twists or neat resolutions with intelligent camerawork that complements the sad realities that both characters face, especially Lynsey. ✪
Also streaming on Apple TV+ is Mahershala Ali single-handedly making a very flawed sci-fi drama watchable. In fact, you’ll frankly wish they had just focused on Ali as someone struggling with if and how to tell his wife and son he’s terminally ill, because he’s so charismatic and soulful in those scenes of normal family life. The whole plot of him secretly cloning himself so the clone can pretend to be him is sloppy, like the film’s not prepared to fully interrogate the premise or how the character makes the leap to something this drastic, even in his terrible situation. Again, Ali’s great, including when he plays double in multiple seamless scenes, but this film only needed one of him. ✪
To say Black Adam is one of the better DC Comics adaptations is no great endorse ment, yet even this merely okay film still tops the disastrous attempts to rush a cinematic universe to rival Marvel’s. Black Adam himself, an ancient warrior who might be more “super” than “hero”, has the basis for a compelling main character, even if Dwayne Johnson can’t do much with it besides look vaguely stoic and determined. Naturally, there’s plenty of loud CGI action with costumed heroes and one-liners, though at a completely breathless pace which nearly chokes any resonance this story has because it’s so determined to get to the next scene or the next action beat. At least it’s got Pierce Brosnan, and he gets to play the best-written character! ✪
Content to be completely perfunctory at every turn, Prey for the Devil most inspires fear when it tries writing believable dialogue. A young nun working for a special exorcism society wants to train to exorcise demons herself but first, she’s got her own demons to face. While some horror clichés are hard to avoid, this film fails to embrace the story of an exorcist society taking on the devil and his servants wherever they lurk. As corny as that could be, it’d definitely be more adventurous than another film full of generic scenes of someone being haunted alone before sudden jump “scares” which are fully predictable and frankly just tame. Nor do the characters have the excuse of being demon-possessed; they’re just very thinly written. ✪

the Speedhorn, who were at the venue earlier in the year with Napalm Death.
What a magnificent night that was.
They are hairy and creepy, and Black Spiders will be hoping to catch you in their musical web when they crawl in (Dec 17).
Writing on their socials, the arachnid rockers told their fans, “One of our very favourite venues, The Craufurd Arms, gets to host our last show of 2022... we’ll be at the top of our game and ready to melt faces as we burn up the M1. We’ll be ready, hope you are too.’ You bet we are. Good times ahead.
Now, this smells like a great night out – a Christmas Eve eve mega bash topped by Nerdvana (Dec 23).
The last 18 months have seen the trio, ‘the UK’s youngest Nirvana tribute’, honing their style and laying down the grunge greats before audiences around the country, playing a flurry of festivals and iconic venues.
The band is promising to deliver all of the ‘raw, chaotic energy’ that you expect, but with added festive fun, and some Nirvana tracks that the band has never tackled live before... The all-local line-up will also feature support from Serma and The Jettisons
Tickets are a fiver – more fun than Santa could fit in a Christmas stocking and cheap at half the price.
New Year’s Eve can be a whole lot of effort for a lame return. But those among you who still press ‘play’ to Slippery When Wet, and who yearn for a return of those Sunset Strip days of glam n’ roll, stop where you are; King Awesome are bringing the party!
If you’ve seen them in the city before, you’ll know that Oxford’s hair metal tribute mob are
big on effects, pyros and anthems. And you’ll know that this is no below par covers band –they really do deliver.
It’s all about ‘fist pumping, lip pouting, hair flicking, high kicking, face melting, hard rocking arena anthems.’
‘Get ready to party like it’s 1989!’ as the clock strikes midnight. It’ll be like grunge never happened!

Chapter and Verse
With Christmas calling, you might find yourself holed in with the family for longer than usual, and that’s all good. But what happens when the Christmas liquor has been emptied, the festive games exhausted and the season of goodwill is turning sour? That’s when you need to take yourselves off and stick your head in a good book, and retailer racks are full of them.
Here are three of our most favoured recent page-turners...
Lady Gaga Applause
RRP: £25
Who is Miss Gaga? Just when you think you have her ‘summed up’ she takes another unpredictable turn – so far she has gone from pop Queen to jazz ace, to outstanding actress.
Along the way, she has turned the world of fashion on its head, courted controversy and founded the Born This Way foundation. Annie Zaleski’s book is a classy addition to shelves belonging to fans of this ever-evolving creative; a lady who has sold more than 124 million records, and bagged 12 Grammy Awards.

Sex Pistols I Wanna Be Me
RRP: £25
Those who weren’t there at the time might struggle to understand the furore that the Sex Pistols whipped up in their day. Their history was short, but as the leaders of the new punk movement they scared authority, and upset parents everywhere.
As Johnny Rotten is quoted in the pages of I Wanna Be Me, “Suddenly it was like the whole world hated us, which I was perfectly happy with. It means we were doing something right.”
There are some fabulous recollections here and images that will take you back to those early shows – you can almost smell the stale sweat.
Get lost in the pages of an era that music will never forget. Never mind the other Pistols books, this one is the b*****s!
> Get it: palazzoeditions.com
Del Bromham Rock and Roll Survivor
RRP: £20
We mentioned this in the last edition of Pulse Music, but after threatening it for a
while, the founder of Stray has put pen to paper and shared the recollections of a life in music, and with more than 50 years of memories to pull from, it’s an engrossing read.
There are tales here of time spent with Ozzy Osbourne and Lemmy and of touring with artists including Kiss and Rush...and the occasional Mafia boss and Kray family member get a look in, too.
The book comes with forewords by Stray fans, Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris and The Damned’s Captain Sensible which is approval enough.

What’s on the Setlist? The Amy Winehouse Band
An Amy Winehouse show with a difference is heading to The Stables – Forever Amy is a stunning retrospective delivered by her original band.
Described as ‘the only completely authentic reimagining of the Amy Winehouse sound,’ the show will also feature onscreen visuals, and exceptional vocalist Bronte Shand bringing life to Amy’s sensational catalogue.
Dale Davis was Amy’s MD, bass player and friend. He is at the helm of this show, too.
“It’s still great to be honouring Amy’s music and legacy, even though there’s the sadness that she’s no longer here,” he told me.
He shared the three tracks on the show setlist that mean the most to him, and why.
Moody’s Mood
“I love Amy’s interpretation of this song. I asked Amy why she didn’t include it in her set – this was at the beginning of our time together. She said it was a difficult song to sing, which it is, as well as being a great song. At the next rehearsal she sang it with such grace and beauty. I later discovered that she learnt the song in a week before she recorded it, which gives you an idea of how musically talented she was.
Me & Mr Jones
“When I first heard the unfinished version of the album Back to Black, the first song that stood out was Me & Mr Jones for its Rhythm ‘n’ Blues/Rock ‘n’ feel. It’s also a song that can’t be played on the radio during the daytime!”
Love Is A Losing Game
“A prophetic masterpiece. Covered by Prince and George Michael, which puts her up there with the greats.”

Van the man announces Stables dates
Van Morrison will play three intimate shows in Milton Keynes in March, in support of his upcoming album, Moving On Skiffle
The long-player will be released on March 10, with Van playing three shows at The Stables in Wavendon, on March 13, 14 & 15.
Skiffle has always been a part of Van’s musical fabric – as a child he would hang out at Belfast’s Atlantic Records store which opened his ears to artists including Lead Belly and Jelly Roll Morton. In time he graduated to playing with a skiffle band.
“I was still in school when I performed with a skiffle band – a couple of guitars, washboard, tea-chest bass,” he recalled, “I was already familiar with Lead Belly’s recordings so when I heard Lonnie Donegan’s version of ‘Rock Island Line’ I intuitively understood what he was
creating, I knew that it was what I wanted to do. It was like an explosion. This record retranslates songs from that era.”
The timeless selection will find a new audience thanks to Van’s channelling, but while most are being played straight, there are occasions when the rebellious artist tinkered; Mama Don’t Allow (recorded by Memphis Jug Band and Tampa Red almost a century ago) will now be called Gov Don’t Allow. It’s a nod to his fight against the rise in government interference in our daily lives.
Alison Young, Head of Programming at the venue, is thrilled to confirm the shows – which sold out almost immediately.
“We’ve been discussing a mini residency with Van and his team for a few years now and are absolutely delighted that this will come to fruition with the launch of his new album, in a series of intimate shows here,” she told Pulse Music

Many years ago, I lived in Poland when men were men, arguments were mathematical expressions, and social media was a vinyl record liked by multiple people.
At the time it was merely a strange country, once part of the Communist Eastern Bloc, which then bordered the area now known as the EU.
The country had been economically hamstrung after being forced to be part of an economic and political zone that didn’t come out of the Cold War too well. It was otherwise a country of riches, in terms of the people and its welcoming nature towards visitors. Worn-out shop door handles that rattled, and buildings with render flaking off, were common because no one had the money or means to make good whatever had become rundown.
I had been living and working in Germany, grape-picking, and when I left the Weingut one dark morning I turned left instead of right and my original onward destination of Turkey became Poland.
Once I had realised a wrong turning had been taken, I decided to embrace the error and obtain an entry visa. That meant stopping off at the Polish Botschaft (embassy) to complete an application form. It was written in two languages: German and Polish; no English. I used my poor German to wade through the form and hoped to manage well enough to be rewarded with the required visa to insert into my passport.
The hour I spent trying to negotiate it was enough to obtain the important and necessary slip of paper. My trip towards my new objective was not going to result in being turned away at the German/ Polish border.
Once there it seemed wise to learn at least a little Polish as I was discovering that speaking German wasn’t helping me to make friends.
My choices had been: Polish, Russian, German, or pantomime. The first would have been ideal, the second meant instant and severe dislike while the third engendered distrust. However, the last option generally produced smiles and sympathy, but the amount of energy I had to use to get a message across was far more than I could spare over a period of time.
Naturally, I did what any decent foreigner would do and I learnt how to say please and thank you, along with a few swear words. My favourite cuss became choinka (pronounced: hoy-inka). It didn’t appear to be strong and I thought it might help me fit in a little better. Whenever I said it, Poles tended to smile and I figured it was probably to do with the way I pronounced it. I’m sure every native-speaker of English will have grinned when they have heard a foreigner swearing in English. Sometimes it is funny or at the very least, incongruous.
It was a good few years after my return to Blighty before my discovery that I had merely been saying Christmas tree, in place of the true naughty word – just like saying sugar instead of something else after stubbing a toe.

Your stars
Flavour of the Times - The new moon that occurs in Sagittarius releases some of the tension that was so difficult for most of us last month. There is a welcome sense of rediscovering the vision that seemed to have gone missing for a while. The accent is more on expansion and renewed sense of purpose – it’s altogether much more optimistic but the link with Jupiter may mean that good ideas get very over-blown, and people may get carried away with completely unrealistic hopes and dreams that are nothing to do with reality. Travel aims may not match up to their billing. The winter is for hunkering down!
SAGITTARIUS
November 23 – December 22 You might well start the month with exuberant optimism but coming unstuck – probably at the full moon on 7th - is a real possibility here, so keep it real. You might feel desperate to get away somewhere where you can leave the troubles of the world behind but sadly, we always take ourselves with us and your energies may fragment and fall apart if you are not careful.
CAPRICORN
December 23 – January 20
A bid for freedom has always been followed by the consequences. You know this very well so you may feel, justifiably, reluctant to go along with some of the more outlandish ideas that come at you this month. It is, after all, the winter and the energy is low everywhere in nature, and humans are no different. File under ‘ideas for the future’.
AQUARIUS
January 21 – February 19
Feeling a bit detached and philosophical about how things are going is probably a sensible strategy this month. You have perhaps been trying to keep your head above the conflict for a while now so it’s best to attend to your own needs before reaching out to humanity. Mind you, the local foodbank may need your help and enthusiasm as the winter worsens.
PISCES
February 20 – March 20
Jupiter and Neptune are about to leave Pisces this month so any creative and imaginative plans that you may have conjured up might not endure. I doubt you will have the energy to ‘go for it’ now even if you could, so maybe finding peace and harmony with those around you will turn out to be a better bet this month. Bring a little light and warmth to the creeping darkness.
ARIES
March 21 – April 20
You should feel a real lift as you get towards the end of this month. The new moon in Sagittarius is a boost of optimism but as Jupiter moves into your sign at the solstice on the 21st, there will be some sort of shift forward. Jupiter will charge quite fast through Aries this winter, so be aware of any belligerence and aggression either coming your way or, indeed, from you.
TAURUS
April 21 – May 21
You may distrust change in many ways but the position of Uranus in your chart has been challenging your ideas of how you would like things to be for a good while. The intensity of last month may be fading now but it is important to learn the lessons it has taught you. Any lazy thinking or complacency should be strongly resisted now.
GEMINI
May 22 – June 21
The pre-Christmas party season will boost your spirits after last month’s intensity, but as the winter approaches you may not have quite the stamina for it all that you hoped for. You will like the optimism that comes with Sagittarius but keep an eye on burn out and feeling frazzled by the stresses of the year you have had. It’s a time to look after yourself.
CANCER
June 22 – July 23
You may feel sensitive and even a little melancholic at this time of year. You will want to be with your family but you are also well aware of the difficulties everyone has been facing. Life has been tough but your nurturing instincts will be appreciated so long as you don’t come across as being too smothering. It’s important to let people be themselves and find their own answers.
To really understand what this means for you on a personal level during 2022, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation that is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year.
PUZZLE SOLUTIONS
LEO
July 24 – August 23
Sagittarius might not let you sleep too well this month as your mind is teeming with new ideas. You enjoy the optimism the sign brings but December is also the lowest point of the year at the winter solstice, so resist the temptation to try to do much more than just simply enjoy the Christmas season. Gratitude is worth cultivating, particularly at this time of year.
VIRGO
August 24 – September 23
So here we go, getting organised for Christmas. As usual, you take a big sigh as you realise that nobody else is as good as you are at all this but try to also take a moment, let go of all the lists of presents etc. to consider how you might let yourself relax a little and try to enjoy the season for yourself. Find some tranquility to rest yourself.
LIBRA
September 24 – October 23
Your natural sense of harmony will be a great asset through the Christmas period as you bring a bit of calm to potentially fractious relationships and are able to genuinely enjoy being with family and friends. Don’t dwell too much on what you haven’t managed to achieve this year. The year begins anew just as soon as the winter solstice has passed.
SCORPIO
October 24 – November 22
Venus is accompanying the new moon in your sign this month. This could be about money, values or love and sex. Either way, it’s not at all trivial but of course that’s why you might even relish delving into it all. Alternatively, you might fear to tread in those footprints because you know that some deep emotions are being stirred. Perhaps now is the time to own up to what you feel deep down?
