re you ready to break a record? MK Food Bank wants to collect 132,000 cans of food to arrange along 10kilometres in Campbell Park later this year. If the MK CAN campaign succeeds it will beat the previous South African record of 90,000. We love a challenge. This year’s Midnight Moo walk was a spectacular success, raising more than £100,000 for Willen Hospice. Some say it was the ‘best yet’ and you can now register your interest for next year’s Moo. While we’re talking of ‘moos’, you might want to visit your favourite concrete cows at Bancroft. They’ve just had a makeover thanks to The Parks Trust and artists Emma Wilde and Aaron Head.
Liz Leyh’s original herd is now housed at MK Museum which continues to celebrate its half century. Some of the Museum’s stalwarts shared their memories with us, including the sprightly 89 years-young Bryan Egan.
Another local treasure is the Milton Keynes Scale Model Club (MKSMC). For more than three decades its members have been making and customising scale model kits. Many have turned their childhood interest into an engrossing grown-up hobby. It’s a great way to practice mindfulness too.
Another hobby that might catch children’s attention this summer is in the garden. They can use their tablets and smartphones to discover all sorts of interesting outdoor projects. Then they can put them into practice from vegetable plots to perfect planters. If you don’t have a garden, why not a window box?
There’s plenty to interest the young ones at Milton Keynes Theatre too. Everyone’s childhood favourite, Annie, is on stage from 7th August, followed by 42nd Street on 28th. In between you might still grab a returned ticket for Gary Delaney’s Punderland or enjoy some dino-delights with Teach Rex Live. Have a great time this month everyone!

The ‘can do’ attitude that is the hallmark of Milton Keynes is set to break records
Now MK Food Bank is looking to extend its fundraising across the wider Milton Keynes community with its MK CAN initiative which aims to set a new world record later this year for the longest continuous line of cans of food. The charity is calling on the community, community groups and businesses to join in.
The charity, which is providing food aid to hundreds of families and individuals struggling in the cost of living crisis, is experiencing soaring demand for its services. It has delivered more than 14,000 food parcels this year already – similar to those at the height of the pandemic, said operations manager Louisa Hobbs.
“The cost of food is rising but our donations are going down,” she said
at the launch of the MK CAN record attempt. “We are only receiving around half of what we need to meet this demand.”
MK Food Bank’s target for MK CAN is to line up more than 132,000 cans along ten kilometres around Campbell Park, shattering the previous record of 90,000 cans set in South Africa. It is calling on businesses, community groups and other organisations to sponsor a 25-metre section and commit to provide the 350 cans needed to cover the 25 metres. Businesses are asked to pay £250 for the sponsorship opportunity, which will be free to other community groups, she told guests at the MK CAN launch event at the Milton Keynes Rose in Campbell Park.

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a lightall fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords
are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.
Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been
referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have
any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.
When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window
once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

Is a Kitchen re-spray the new way to update and save?
Many of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially since we have had more time at home. But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.
Now local company FX-SPRAY MK is offering a complete professional paint spray service for kitchens.
It is a quick and simple process that leaves your kitchen looking brand new, says FX-SPRAY MK. The company removes and sprays 90 per cent of the kitchen off site, which means that very little work has to be done in your home, in turn meaning minimal disruption. An average kitchen can be completed within a week and home owners continue to use it during the process.
FX-SPRAY MK only use specialist products and having the latest spray equipment means the company delivers that brand new factory finish. A colour matching service to all major paint brands gives a huge choice - you can even go with a two-colour scheme.
“Can any kind of kitchen can be refinished or is respraying just for solid wood?” As long as your kitchen is in reasonable condition, FX-SPRAY MK can refinish it., even carrying out minor repairs and changing handles as part of the process.
FX-SPRAY MK also treats doors, windows and furniture. For more information or a free quote, email jason@fxfinishing.co.uk or visit www.fxfinishing.co.uk

Midnight Moo unites community and raises more than £100,000 for end-of-life care
Flashing headbands, garlands, and wings illuminated the night as more than 1,000 fundraisers embraced the Midnight Moo, Willen Hospice’s renowned flagship event.
Midnight Moo’ers started and finished their 5 or 10 mile sponsored walk from Midsummer Place Shopping Centre, with walkers setting off at 10pm. MKFM were broadcasting live with DJ Simon Tuck, complete in inflatable cow costume, getting everyone in the party ‘Moo-d.’ The Good Gym MK led the herd in a group warm up and a representative from the main sponsor, Specsavers MK cut the ribbon on the countdown to 10pm.
Peta Wilkinson, Willen Hospice CEO was amongst the walkers on the night. “The atmosphere at Friday’s event was truly remarkable. You could feel the love for Willen Hospice, and it really drove home the profound impact we have on local families. It was heart-warming to see so many people walking in-memory of their loved ones,
as well as those who just wanted to do something incredible to support their local Hospice.
“This year I’ve run in the London Marathon for Willen Hospice and trekked across the Sahara, so of course I had to take part in the Midnight Moo. This is the fourth time I’ve walked it, and it was the best one ever.
“Thank you to the amazing volunteers, our incredible sponsors and supporters who made this event possible.”
Liz Sparham, whose team raised over £3,000, said “I walked with 10 of us who work and volunteer at the Willen Hospice charity shop in The Point. We wanted to take part and fundraise because we want Willen Hospice to be there for us, should we ever need it.”

Striking a different sort of pose!
We are usually told that bigger is better, but there is at least one group in Milton Keynes who would strongly dispute that, and Milton Keynes Scale Model Club (MKSMC) members are out to shake up any stuffy preconceptions you might have about the hobby too. Pulse’s Sammy Jones learned more from club secretary John Willshere and keen member Andy Mc Glashan.
MKSMC certainly has staying power – it’s been a permanent fixture in the town turned city for more than three decades.
Members range from 12 years old to one chap in his 90s. How’s that for all encompassing?
But before we get lost in jargon, what exactly is a scale model club?
“It usually involves building, customising and painting a boxed plastic kit, like Airfix, Revell and Tamiya, and often setting it onto a base relevant to the subject,” explains club secretary John Willshere.
John has been involved since 2016: “I was modelling on my own but really enjoyed the banter at the club, which led me to try lots of different modelling subjects.”
The pandemic ate into every part of our lives, and even had an influence on the numbers who have picked up the hobby and joined the club.
“Many adults found their childhood interest reignited during the extended lockdown,” he said, “We have three founding members still active in the club and this year a few younger members have come along with a
parent. The skill range is from the enthusiastic starter through to national champions and professional model builders and review article writers.”
John’s first foray into the ‘other’ world of modelling was as a keen seven-year-old when he pieced together an Airfix Spitfire.
“...I then got into Wargames and modelled for that hobby until I was 14, then it all went into the loft for three decades when I started making models with my children, and that got me into serious model making. I think this is a frequent pathway, although many of our members have consistently made models or have a crossover skill to engineering.”
Another MKSMC member whose interest was piqued as a wee lad is Andy Mc Glashan: “I did the Airfix kits when I was a kid. I dipped in and out of it as I grew up, and then got back into it while working as a prototype engineer, producing one-offs and utilising the skills I had learned from the hobby.”

For John, there are many positives to be had from his hobby: “The mindfulness of concentrating in a focused way on the detail of model making; a passionate interest in the history surrounding the model being built; and the personal endeavour to improve my skill, invention and artistry. I spend about half of my time researching the subject, reading up about who made, designed, drove, rode or fought in, or on, the subject.”
You might have visions of rooms in houses being taken over by parts and boxes and glue and all sorts of modelling paraphernalia, and while that is sometimes true, it needn’t be the case.
Andy says: “You can work off a tray or a small area, although some of us older members do have a studio in a spare room, or a workshop in the garden...”
And don’t go knocking Andy for spending hours in the creative workshop: “It can be quite labour intensive but it’s good to keep in mind that it’s a hobby not a job - you can lose hours and evenings working on things, but that’s the same with every hobby,” he says, “I’d rather that than lose a night watching tv - this you can do with a bit of music on in the background.
“The next build is always a great challenge to push yourself further and gain a new skill set along the way,” he says explaining the allure, “Aside from the social aspect, you learn problem solving and engineering skills that can be taken into future careers.”
Over at John’s place, he works from a small utility room which his wife has declared ‘the hutch’!
Modelling mightn’t be as sexy as some hobbies, but ‘don’t knock it till you’ve tried it’ could be the unofficial motto of the MKSMC.
“Think what subject might inspire youmaybe a model of your favourite Ferrari, or a tank that your father served in and give it a go,” urges John, “Have a look in a proper model shop like Al’s Hobbies in Wolverton at the range of kits or even try Hobbycraft to see the variety of subjects available.
“You are always welcome to pop along on our club night and see what goes on – you don’t need to stay or come again, just stick your head round the door to see what we’re up to. The offer is there for the inquisitive newbie or
anyone who has been making models for a while, but didn’t know about the club.”
Andy adds: “Everybody’s got their thing, and a hobby is good for mindful wellbeing. Try it, and still think it’s boring, then I’ll respect your opinion, but it’s a good hobby for younger people who may be on the spectrum as they can produce super detailed work and get a sense of satisfaction from the completion.”
If you think the extent of modelling is miniature planes, car models and tanks, you’d be wide of the mark. Of course they are still popular choices, but how about the figurines of the most famous cat and mouse duo, Tom and Jerry? Perhaps a miniature Schwarzenegger as The Terminator? Or some downsized Ghostbusters characters? And rather than sinking money into a full sized VW Camper that you’ll have big ideas for, but leave to rot, why not opt for the small, more cost effective version? It’s what smart people would choose to do. There are model kits for all, no matter what your passion.
As with any hobby, there can be peaks and troughs though.
“How long is a piece of string?” John replies when asked how labour intensive the activity can be, “Some modellers work on a single large passion project for many months or years. Others knock out a model every couple of weeks or so. These things have to fit around other commitments and also depend on the prevailing ‘mojo’. Sometimes it’s all consuming, other times it’s hard to get or stay motivated.
“It’s an absorbing pastime with a sense of achievement in artistry or construction that fuels and feeds off interest in many and varied topic areas,” John promises.
And, while it might still appear to be a male dominated hobby, Andy says that the tide is changing.
“There are definitely more girls and ladies joining the hobby...there has been a big resurgence in kits from Marvel and Star Wars franchises, which are popular with everyone.”
Scale modelling isn’t without risk though –and the occasional model might accidentally be painted blood red. There are disasters.
“Mostly involving sharp blades and fingers,” John adds, “It is very difficult to handle plastic parts with plasters on fingers!”
> MKSMC meets on the fourth Wednesday of every month at Ousebank House in Newport Pagnell.

‘It's not just the items, it's about interacting with the people...’
As the Museum continues to mark its half century, Pulse's Sammy Jones takes another look back at how the history hub has evolved, by speaking with two of those volunteers whose input has been invaluable.
“Iremember my first job at the Museum, which would probably put anyone off for life,” Neil Loudon says, laughing at the memory, “It was in the print shop, cleaning all the parkay tiles and then laying them!”
That was in 1980, and he has been a valued volunteer ever since.
“I started off fairly unskilled. I had just moved here and was looking for something to do, although I don’t think I really knew that at the time. I just sort of fell into it really.”
There isn’t one facet of the Museum that takes Neil’s attention – there are many.
“I am really interested in the objects and do a little bit of conservation and restoration, as well as manning the telephones, and now I’ve retired I do a little bit in the print room too,” he says, “But now it’s not just the items, it’s also about talking to people, interacting with the people and helping them to have an enjoyable time when they are here that appeals to me. Hopefully they will go away having learned something, and you can learn so much yourself as well, from the stories that people share.”
One such occasion presented itself only the day before our chat with Neil.
“The last people who came through the Communication Gallery said ‘I don’t suppose you remember someone living in the farmhouse?’ so I told them about the artists in residence who used to be here, and about Jack Trevor Story, the writer who was based at the farmhouse. It turned out the lady was the granddaughter of Jack’s brother!
“They had only met him once, and I was able to tell them about him. He was a real character. And that all came out of talking to them about some of the telephones!”
There have been some mega highs at the Museum, and watching the history hub grow in size and stature is right up there.
Not all memories are so positive though, and the arson attack in the early hours of New Years Day 1996 understandably casts a dark shadow

Now and then: Neil Loudon pictured in the Communication Gallery and on the fire engine Pic: Keith Wootton
in the memories of those who were there that dreadful day.
“After the director, Bill, I was the second one on site when the fire happened – it was a very cold, icy night and I got a call from Bill saying ‘The Museum is on fire.’ I had to de-ice the car and by the time I got to the end of my road –which is a mile or so away – I could see the flames in the sky.
“Then you turn up and it’s shock and horror, and there was nothing we could do except stand back and let the firemen do their job.
“In the aftermath sifting through the ashes, I was thinking, ‘I restored that item, that’s gone now...’”
Bill said they would rebuild, and they certainly have – the Museum that visitors engage with today is the biggest and best it has ever been.
“Unique is a difficult word isn’t it, but we get people commenting and saying things like ‘I’ve never been to a Museum like this before,’ and ‘This is the best Museum I have ever been to,’ which is really gratifying...”
And what has kept you here through the decades?
“They lock me in every night and won’t let me go!” he laughed.
But if that were the case, we don’t think Neil would mind one bit!
Bryan Egan is 89 years young, and for half his life he has been entwined with the Museum. It’s in his blood.
“I was on the committee that first thought about having a Museum,” he says, “But though I didn’t join them, I would still lend a hand.”
The vast space that now houses the Museum hasn’t always been that way. In the early days it only occupied a small part of Stacey Hill Farm, the property it has now claimed as its own.
Back then, the main quarter was occupied by writers, artists and new town planners.
“...as they shrank, we grew and took over the spare bits,” Bryan recalled.
In those days, the new town of Milton Keynes was only a toddler itself, and with few of the features it is known for today.
John Dankworth and Cleo Laine were working hard in Wavendon, turning their vision of bringing music to the area into a reality, but their herculean efforts aside and the new town was largely quiet, with leisure activities limited.
Bryan’s wife, Pam, was whipping up interest working as a publicist for the Museum and she was clearly doing a great job – more than 1,000 people turned up one weekend!
In those formative years the Museum was gifted a great deal of items – one of the first was a significant Akroyd Stuart Diesel Engine from the 1800s.
Finding gifts left at the gate was a common occurrence: “As farms shut down, farmers would dump their stuff here,” Bryan recalls, “We’d take what we wanted and make good use of it.”
By the time local schools started visiting in the 1980s a great selection of historical wares had been assembled to aid the educational sessions exploring life in days gone by.
Neil mentioned the fire which lit up the Museum for all the wrong reasons as it swept through the threshing barn and cowshed, both of which had been on the site since the 1850s. But while the fire services spent time damping down the ruins post-blaze, the will and determination of the volunteers would never be dampened.
“It was bad,” Bryan acknowledges, “But everyone simply rolled up our sleeves and got going again.”
Today, Bryan can be found at the Museum every Saturday, welcoming visitors and sharing fascinating stories of its past; he remembers the Concrete Cows being constructed by artist Liz Leyh – they took shape in the area that now works as the Servants’ Room.
You won’t realise it, but Bryan’s handiwork is in evidence all over the Museum – he restores brasses, specialises in metals and is often found tinkering with something or other.
If an old oil lamp needs some TLC it’ll be Bryan to the rescue. He also stripped the parlour and created the Edwardian kitchen!
“I like the 1840s period, the country and engineering moved forward then – it was a time of real progression,” he explained.
Bryan is thrilled by the recent year additions to the Museum – the most significant being the impressive new gallery spaces, which in time will tell the ancient and the modern history of the new city.
“The expansion has made the Museum even more lively and hands-on,” he states, “We’ve got to look forward in order to look back and we certainly are doing that.”
In 2019, at the sprightly age of 85, Bryan was one of the recipients of the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, which recognises the outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. The honour put a bounce in everyone’s step and was richly deserved, as anyone who has ever spent time at the Museum will agree.
Bryan was one of three volunteers chosen to accept the official document, delivered by Vice Lord Lieutenant Alexander Boswell DL on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
“It was a recognition of what we have achieved as volunteers - everyone comes together and it’s a real community,” Bryan said, “The Museum keeps me skipping, and I will carry on giving my time until I have a tombstone put over me!”

How should you own your property?
Joint Tenants v Tenants in Common
If you are purchasing a property between two or more people then you will be asked how you wish to hold the property. There are two answers to this question, either as Joint Tenants or Tenants in Common. It is very important to understand the difference between these, and how they can affect you both now, and in the future.
Joint Tenants
This is when two or more Joint Tenants own the whole of the property, and there are no definable shares attributed to each. This is regardless of unequal contributions to the deposit or mortgage payments.
On the sale of the property, all parties are due an equal share of the proceeds.
If one party dies, the property passes automatically to the other Joint Tenant. This cannot be overridden by a will.
Tenants in Common
This means that each co-owner owns a specified share of the property. This can be 50% each or any other percentage agreed between the parties, to reflect for example, unequal contributions to the purchase.
If you want to hold the property as Tenants in Common, then it is advisable to enter into a Deed of Trust, setting out your shares and what is to happen on the sale of the property. It is also important to have a Will advising who should inherit your share of the property.
On the sale of the property, each party would be entitled to the percentage agreed. Any payments would usually be made from the net sale proceeds. This means that,
once all costs of sale have been deducted (Estate Agents fees, legal costs etc), the remaining funds would then be split between the owners in the agreed shares.
Each party can also leave their share of the property in their will to anyone they wish, including a third party.
What should you consider when making this decision?
Most married couples are happy with a Joint Tenancy, as they are most likely to leave the property to each other on death and the property being jointly owned fits in with the idea of joint marriage assets. Some of the exceptions to this are when there are children from previous relationships or if it is a large estate or an estate with multiple properties, in these cases estate planning considerations
may show that Tenants in Common may be more suitable.
For any other situation, it is advisable to own the property as Tenants in Common and ensure that both a Deed of Trust and individual Wills for each owner are in place. This protects every individual owner’s interest, especially if there is an unequal contribution. Deeds of Trust can also be used to alter the shares in a property if certain conditions are met or set out what is to happen if the parties disagree on the future of the property. It also allows each share to be passed to different people either via a will or intestacy on the death of an owner.
It is possible to swap from one type of ownership to another and can be advisable to do so as relationships and circumstances change.

Fans queued for hours to meet her at the hometown event, with some making quite the journey.

A new approach to bathrooms
Anyone who has driven by a piled high skip will know just how much is simply thrown away when renovating a home.
It does not need to be that way. Paul Rising, who set up Olney Bathrooms ten years ago, has taken a fresh look at the way he and his team work. He realised clients can still have their dream bathroom but through the use of sustainable products the completed space will have a lot less impact on the environment.
This new way of working does not mean clients have to compromise on style or pay more for their bathroom.
Paul, who has more than 20 years in the trade, said: “Everyone is far more
environmentally aware, and we knew it was important for us to play our part. It really didn’t make sense to me that we are sourcing materials like tiles and marble from across the world and then notching up hundreds of air miles to get them delivered.
“Now we are sourcing similar high-quality products but making sure they are available much closer to home and far more sustainable. Once we talk clients through the options it might be that they see ways of giving their bathroom a new look but don’t have to rip out everything and dump it in a skip which will be destined for landfill. We have always tried our best, but it is frustrating that so much cannot be recycled, so we decided to take a different approach.”

Paul Rising Olney Bathrooms

The new style eco bathrooms use less to no plastic, including pipework, and the paint is also environmentally friendly. Traditional tiles that cannot be recycled and are a drain on the environment are no longer used. The alternative hybrid tiles are made from recyclable materials and when a client wants a new look can be recycled rather than added to the skip.
Micro-cement, which comes in an extensive range of colours, is another option for those looking for something different for their walls, worktops and windowsills.
Paul said: “Micro-cement is such a versatile product and is a total alternative to tiles. No grout is needed and the seamless 100 per cent waterproof walls are totally free of plastic. Feedback from clients is that the bathroom is so much easier to maintain, and it is good to know there is little impact on the environment.”
There is no limit to the different looks for bathrooms with some opting for a traditional look to suit their homes while others favour the minimalist look. One of the latest design trends is to combine micro-cement and glass with stylish slatted walls, using woods like birch which is very strong and waterproof. The fitted furniture can be made in-house to any colour to complement the micro-cement.
Paul said: “We work closely with each customer to make sure they get the room they want at the budget they have set.
“Renovating a bathroom correctly takes planning and forethought and is always installed with patience to avoid cutting quality. When completed correctly a properly fitted bathroom can last for a very long time. The use of micro-cement means a new look is easy to achieve with a change of colour or texture, so it feels like a new room again with little impact on the environment.”
The first step to getting a dream bathroom is to arrange a home visit. Call, email or send a WhatsApp message on 078844 80131. After talking through the options Paul will provide an estimate.

But now there’s a beauty tool to tackle those vulnerable areas – some of which are caused by spending too long looking at mobile devices. Yep, ‘tech neck’ really is a thing!

Into the Blur
Things are hotting up nicely, now 2023’s finally got the memo re: sunshine for summer, inviting us all to dress for the occasion. And, whether you’re skipping off on a sandy holiday or suffering through unexpected British heatwaves, there’s a trend to keep your wardrobe cool: blurry ombré, and summer’s blast from the past – tried and tested tie dye.
This season’s catwalks were awash with it — Altuzarra (inspired by desert myths, “world travellers and trekkers”) sending models out in waves of zig-zaggy tie dyes in ocean blues, oranges and lime, rippled with raspberry and lemon; Prada putting subtle smudge prints on silk dresses (think red or brown, inked with deep plum blotches) or defining collars and hems with dip-dye; and Roksanda showing pieces in abstract, solarised prints, taking inspiration from Swedish artist Pipilotti Rist. Meanwhile in Milan, sunset shades in ombré walked the catwalks at Ferragamo and Etro.
To wear it, choose from mesh tops and long tulle dresses, lightweight maxi skirts or wide leg trousers in sweet, zingy hues. The colour-shy among you should swap for subtle watercolour palettes. Simply pair with white to look the epitome of summer style. Prefer to down-play your prints? Stick with standout accessories instead. Avoiding

Iwork with clients presenting with depression and anxiety, addiction issues and relationship problems.
Addiction stems from trauma; it’s a survival technique subconsciously used to stop feeling painful emotions, so we shop it, drink it, take drugs, over-eat, smoke or use behaviours such as sex or unfulfilling relationships, gambling or constantly scrolling our phones. It’s not about the substance or behaviour, it’s about the need to numb the pain, to feel connected, to feel loved, to feel secure. The cycle starts with craving the substance or behaviour, then short term relief, and then the cycle starts again. Unless we address what’s underneath, the addiction won’t just go away. Many clients report that when they stop drinking or smoking, they notice they’re shopping or scrolling their phones more. This is because the pain underneath, is still there and so is the need to numb it. It takes time, but it’s liberating to know yourself more deeply, to know why you’re in pain, and the ways you’ve learned to ignore it. Childhood experiences profoundly shape us and we survive by acting as though we are ‘fine’.
I want to work with you to help you reach that self-awareness and create healthy change. I look forward to meeting you to work out your needs.

Marco’s NY Italian style served with a smile
Pulse restaurant reviewer, Emma Norris, went along to Marco’s New York Italian restaurant to see if it is living up to its billing.
Last month, I was invited along to try Marco’s New York Italian, situated inside the Holiday Inn at Saxon Gate in the centre of Milton Keynes’ business district.
Acclaimed chef, restaurateur and TV personality Marco-Pierre White has restaurants UK-wide, including two here in Milton Keynes - Marco’s New York Italian and Marco’s Steakhouse Bar and Grill. White’s branches of New York Italians are motivated by his Italian roots and his affection for the city of New York. Inspired by a mix of Italian traditions and eclectic NYC trends from ‘the city that never sleeps,’ the food at the New York Italian is true to Marco’s ethos; you come to enjoy a casual dining experience at affordable prices with a menu that appeals to everybody that shares Marco’s passion for American and Italian food. Not only is the restaurant a great spot for a business dinner and ideal for drinks with colleagues if you’re staying at The Holiday Inn, the proximity to The Hub and Milton Keynes
Central Station make it a fantastic venue for anybody who wants to experience Central MK’s Nightlife.
The menu boasts a variety of different dishes: from finger food, like the New York buffalo wings and fresh ground beef burgers to the finest quality Campbell Brothers’ steaks and light bites such as salads and seafood.
We entered via the foyer of the Holiday Inn at Saxon Gate which, after its refurbishment, is now particularly modern and spacious, mimicking the atmosphere within Marco’s restaurant; the restaurant space is open plan and vast, without feeling ‘empty,’ with a clean and minimalist feel.
The cocktail selection was great, with a few designated specials, as well as a selection of classics that would be sure to please the masses.
The service is certainly timely and attentive; all of the wait-staff were quick and professional without being overbearing, checking intermittently whether we needed our water topping up or if we wanted anything else to eat. While we settled in, enjoyed our cocktails and looked at the menu, we opted for some nibbles; the Martini Olives with fresh herbs (£4.50) were absolutely huge and, quite frankly, delicious – I could’ve eaten the whole bowl myself!
For starters, we shared the NY Buffalo Wings (£7.95) and the Calamari (£9.50) which were both lightly fried and just the right level of crispy. Our mains arrived in good time - we opted for the Avocado Caesar Salad (£13.95) with the addition of a grilled, smoked chicken breast (£3.75) which I really enjoyed as it was so fresh and light. It was rich with garlic, flakes of parmesan, whole anchovies - a divisive fish, but one I absolutely adore - and lightly dressed in a creamy dressing. The avocado, although subtle, worked well in combination with all the other flavours too. We also shared the Hickory smoked baby back ribs in BBQ sauce with New York fries and coleslaw (£18.95). The ‘slaw was really delicious and evidently freshly prepared, while the ribs fell off the bone as soon as you picked them up – ‘Perfetto!’
There is a good variety of food, all of which would be just as appropriate for a working dinner or for a family feast. From beginning to end, at Marco’s NYI, we were served with a smile.

George Davies Turf ‘The Landscaper’s Choice’
Exceptional customer service and a dedication to sourcing and supplying high-quality products has helped local business George Davies Turf grow from a one-man-band to a multi-million-pound business.
Based in Olney, Milton Keynes, and working with landscapers of all sizes, they are the UK’s largest independent supplier of turf - proudly recognised as ‘The Landscaper’s Choice’.
Their hard working team have helped the business maintain an impressive trajectory of growth, now supplying 1.5 million rolls of freshly cut turf to 35,000 gardens a year.
The George Davies Turf product range also includes topsoil, bark, compost, artificial grass and composite decking – offering a complete solution to their customers.
Exceeding customer expectations every time
With over 22 years’ experience working with landscapers, the team at George Davies Turf understand how important it is that their customers receive their turf quickly and in perfect condition, ready for immediate transplantation.
George Davies, founder and managing director, said: “We have structured the business around a 40-mile radius to achieve the fastest delivery from turf farm to landscaper using our own fleet of lorries and drivers. This gives us complete control over timing and last year 99% of deliveries arrived within the dedicated 2-hour timeslot.”
George Davies Turf is proud of the fantastic relationships they have developed, retaining a large and loyal customer base - many have been with them for over 20 years.
Providing the perfect example of how feedback is used to enhance their service, they recently developed an app - the first of its kind in the industry – to simplify the ordering and tracking process.
New look, same great service
Last year as part of their 21st Birthday celebrations, the business rebranded with a new logo, website, uniforms and lorry signage.
“From the first click on our website to delivery on one of our big red lorries, we wanted to provide a distinctive and consistent image in line with our values,” explained George.
“We know how busy landscapers are and part of our rebrand included investment into our digital channels so we can provide information, news and tips in an easy format at a time that suits our customers.”
Giving back
George’s generous team have created a culture of giving back and supporting othersthis year alone they have donated over £7,000

George Davies Turf are proudly known as ‘The Landscaper’s Choice’, supplying thousands of garden projects each year
It is hard to miss the impressive fleet of George Davies Turf lorries on the roads
to local and national charities and sponsored a variety of local community and sport groups. Not just UK based charities, last year George Davies Turf began supporting ‘Empowering Kids in Kenya’ - a charity which provides free secondary school education to children in Bombolulu, a suburb of Mombasa, one of Kenya’s poorest cities.
Industry events
Regularly attending and exhibiting at key industry events, the team love to meet existing and new customers and stay ahead of the latest products and trends. In September they will be exhibiting at GroundsFest – a brilliant interactive event combining indoor business and education opportunities with outdoor demonstrations, live music and unique street food.
Looking to the future
“We’re always expanding our core product range to include an even wider choice of landscaping products to recommend to existing customers,” added George.
“We’ll also work with suppliers to look at alternative turf sources which are better for the environment. We already guarantee naturally produced turf without the use of harmful plastic reinforcing mesh, but we’re looking into the first ever plant-based netting option too. Our ultimate goal is to use 100% natural materials by 2026.”
George Davies Turf team have recently launched a series of educational videos on YouTube in response to customer requests, which cover hot topics and how to guides.
Well-deserved recognition
Acknowledging their dedication to providing fantastic customer service, the team at George Davies Turf were delighted to beat off hundreds of applicants to win ‘Best Customer Service’ in the Milton Keynes Business Achievement Awards (MKBAAs) earlier this year. They were also finalists in the prestigious national BizX Awards.
George said: “Our customers tell us all the time how much they value our service, but to have beaten off so many applicants and such tough competition in these awards was amazing.
“George Davies Turf has been built around exceeding customer expectations – always has and always will.”

DIGGING DEEP
How does your garden grow?
The school holidays are here but the vegetable plots are still productive. The first trial harvest of new potatoes from a container was interesting – there were only a few tubers, but they were “beautifully formed”!
Runner beans and peas were picked and tasted, a few corn cobs were ripe, and garlic was surprisingly good. As was the abundance of salad leaves - the red coloured ones aroused the most interest.
Sowing the seed for the next generation
With the summer holidays upon us, there is plenty of opportunity to ‘grow’ youngsters’ interests in gardens – and while it’s healthy to get the kids away from their tablets and iPhones every now and then, there are some bonuses to be had from the internet.
The web is full of fun things to do with little creatives that will nurture their love of flora, so you don’t need to spend hours trying to remember those episodes of Blue Peter you watched years ago for inspiration!
There are numerous simple projects you can help them with, and they are a great way to understand about plants, flowers and food.
Herb gardens offer variety, have a fab fragrance and kids can grow them and follow them into recipes and onto the plate. Make them fun by coming up with colourful, interesting ways to label the individual plants; perhaps by decorating lollipop sticks, or using toys, to name each herb.
Before popping those empty tin cans into the recycling, they could enjoy a second lease of life as miniature flower planters. Use a safe metal paint to transform the cans and with a little help from adults they can be attached to fences. In bloom, they will really elevate your outdoor space, and the pollinators will come and visit more often too. Remember to drill a draining hole in the bottom of each can and beware of any sharp edges.
Bigger planters will offer more choice, of course; take children to choose their
own blooms from the array of affordable ranges that can be picked up at your local garden centre.
Seed collecting is another fun way to learn –kids will love finding them, and can then collect them up to use next year.
Even if you don’t have a garden of your own, you can still experience the beauty of nature on your doorstep – go and explore one of the local parks and the different wild flowers and trees growing there. Books or phone apps can help you identify flowers and leaves with ease.
I can still remember collecting Sweet Gum leaves for show and tell at school as a wee nipper!
The trees shed their beautiful star shaped leaves, and the colours were stunning shades of red and burgundy. Remember collecting conkers or picking up acorns or pine cones? It’s easy fun, but connects little people to nature.
When you’ve done the tree hunt, how about a bug hunt? An understanding of the insects living in our green spaces adds to the wonder of the outdoors, and making a bug hotel (we shared how to do that back in April’s edition) is a fab way to invite six-legged guests into your outdoor spaces.
Children will love the process of being little garden helpers, will learn an appreciation of all that exists beyond the screens, and lots of fresh air means they’ll sleep well too!
Some of the herbaceous perennials at the back of the border have put on their show and their flower stems have gone to seed. It is time to cut them down to their base, tidy and weed round them, work in some compost as a mulch and place young plants (raised in the cold frames or bought from a local nursery) in the gaps.
Hardy geraniums are always good to add to the border.
The box hedge at the back of the border is too tall and needs to be drastically trimmed, as do the topiary box balls, to regain their compact shapes.
I am continuing to deadhead the climbing and bush roses to promote late flowering and to clip back and rearrange the formation of a new framework for rambling roses to carry next year’s blooms.
May we enjoy a colourful autumn.

Multitude - the festival that’s beyond a bargain!
The inaugural Multitude Festival was an absolute blast at The Craufurd Arms last year, and you’ll get the chance to indulge in the feast of fabulousness again on Saturday, August 5 when the second event in the series goes live.
Twenty-three bands will play across three stages and all for just £13. It’s beyond a bargain – and the chance to check in with some of the best rising talents from across the country, including Naked Next Door and Jasmine Burns
Car Boot Sale claim to reference ‘treasured sonic textures from the hard-hitting rock of the 70’s and the euphoric alternative indie of the 90’s on their single, Miss It. The track was produced by Hugo Nicolson, who has been at the production desk with artists including Primal Scream, Beck and Radiohead.
Cowboyy brought a concoction of punk, prog, metal and jazz on their debut EP, while DSM IV – formed by Guy McKnight, who some of you will remember from The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, deliver a sound cacophonous and epic, with powerful soundscapes as standard; hear more on the debut album New Age Paranoia, which hit the racks in June.
Brighton’s Opus Kink will top the Myriad Stage, with a blend of punk, jazz, sickly folk and rough country music which has made them something of a unique prospect on the current scene.
Yaang promise they are powered by the rocketfuel combo of pulsating drum loops, clangorous guitars and a wicked sense of humour, and the Manchester bunch will be jostling for position on the Multitude billing with others including indierock trio Ciel formed in the land of seagulls (aka Brighton), who combine elements of fuzzy indie rock, goth, and shoegaze.
Sunny Gym’s members are spread between Northampton, London and Manchester, but the productivity isn’t being hampered any. The band, whose influences include Neil Young, Yuck and Big Thief, cut loose their debut EP back in February, and Scottish proposition Yamma finds inspiration from the malevolent power structures within an exhausted musical landscape.
It’s a mammoth bill of brilliance. How much can you take?
‘We will rock ‘til we drop’ say The Subways
The Subways will call in at MK11 on Tuesday, August 8.
It’s hard to believe that their floor-filling single Rock Roll Queen is coming close to marking its 20th birthday. What the hell?!
Since then, they’ve delivered five elpees including the current opus Uncertain Joys, but after completing the recording process for that, drummer and founding member Josh Morgan stepped away from the band.
In his place stepped former Ramonas lady Camille Phillips, who was announced as the permanent replacement at the start of last year, joining Billy Lunn and Charlotte Cooper on their creative journey.
And what a journey it has been to date –they’ve played more than 100 international festivals, including Glastonbury’s hallowed Pyramid Stage, Reading & Leeds, Rock Im Park, Rock Am Ring, and Hurricane.
“We will rock till we drop, as there is nothing more exciting for us than being on tour,” they

Hometown warm up for Casket Feeder
New York hardcore leaders H20 will be stopping off in the new city on Thursday, August 3.
I think I first met their musical acquaintance at the long gone London Marquee aeons ago.
Nearly three decades on and they are still on fire, and if you want to be up close and personal when they lay siege at The Craufurd Arms, go grab those tickets pronto.
The band is only doing three dates on British soil and the Wolverton date is the last.
Casket Feeder will play on Friday, August 4 – a warm up for their show the following week at the Bloodstock Festival in Derbyshire.
Our lads will be bringing the noise to the Sophie Lancaster stage on the Saturday, the day when Meshuggah are event headliners. Acts of Vengeance and Beyond Extinction will join them for the hometown show.
Tickets are six quid on the doors. Moving the diary on a little, Watford-based prog metal proposition SiKth will return on August 17.
In 2022 they marked their 20 year anniversary too.
Their Craufurd show is a warm-up show for the Bristol Festival ArcTanGent.

GoGetSome music from TheGetGone
Just a couple of quick mentions for some nice new releases, starting with TheGetGone who issued their new five track EP, Lead Me Nowhere, a couple of weeks back.
This release is the fourth from the band, but the first where they have taken the reins and self-produced.
TheGetGone have been stage sharing with Space Pistol, Howling Skulls, Battery Farm and Gaylips this year, and they are far from done – the band is currently booking shows for later in 2023, so there will be lots of opportunity to check them out before too long.
Meantime, if you head to your preferred streaming platform or their Bandcamp page you can check the aforementioned EP right away. Lead Me Nowhere is a collection of heavy pop songs, riffs, whoa’s and themes of misery and jubilance,” promises guitarist and vocalist Ben. Enjoy.
Our Man in the Bronze Age cheered fans with their first new music in a while, with the release of the The Waiting Islands, which had people asking on social media if a new Don’t get too excited quite yet though: ‘Just an audio burp or two at the moment,’ they said.
Reggae Land is nigh
In the last issue of Pulse Music we gave you the full low down on the upcoming Reggae Land festival, which will be transforming the National Bowl on August 5 & 6.
Here’s your quick recap: The weekend will deliver more than 80 artists, including headliners Sean Paul, Beenie Man and Barrington Levy who will play to an audience of 30,000.
The event will be brimming with extra cool too; a Reggae flea market, a fairground, an entire Carnival Float stage, dancers, VIP zone, Caribbean Food Village and drinks in the assorted rum shacks, gin bars and Caribbean cocktail bars.

Karma times ahead
After more than two decades, Milton Keynes-based band Supakarma will release their self-titled debut album this August. Sammy Jones looks at the band’s journey to this point.
The end of the nineties was nigh. Britpop mania was over, and the Y2K bug was about to wreak global damage at the turn of the new Millennium.
Remember that?
In Milton Keynes a quartet of musicians were diligently crafting in the rehearsal room and didn’t care much about bugs or anything else. They were consumed by their creations; harnessing the best bits of an exploded genre, and giving their songs a brash, experimental indie rock edge. It was all sounding exciting.
The band (frontman Daniel Binks, guitarist Jamie Paul Morris, bassist Steven Sciberras and drummer Ben Hallett) soon took
Track by trackSupakarma in full
What Are You Waiting For?
It’s about resilience, determination, hope and faith. Behind the romantic idea of utopia on another plain, the underlying message in the song is that no matter what happens in life, somehow you’ve got to find the strength to take the punches and keep hitting back. It’s about survival.
Digital Vision
The title came first and the rest followed. Our guitarist, Jamie, thought the chord progression was off the wall and quite “Coxon-esque”... It’s a hedonistic play on technology at the dawn of the world wide web.
New Test Cannonball
A virtual object containing every traumatic event in life that most Homo sapiens could possibly imagine or endure.
their sounds out of the rehearsal space and into the live, cutting their teeth on the London circuit and making their mark at select festivals in the low countries.
They found favour with those dates, and their musical musings landed them an extended stay at top-flight studio, Great Linford Manor with esteemed producer Tony Platt (AC/DC, Bob Marley).
Everything was very nearly magnificent, until band friction led to the session unravelling. Instead of the promised robust release, an acrimonious split left the project unfinished and gathering dust.
Those tracks might well still be sitting on the shelf today, were it not for the devastating loss of guitarist Jamie, in 2019.
His untimely death reopened lines of communication between the remaining members, and where there had been discontent, there was a realisation that they had unfinished business, and the band have reconvened to deal with it.
“We decided we would finish the album as a tribute to Jamie and feel that even after all this time the music still has its own place out there in the musical void,” said Ben, “Once finally released others might stumble across it and
It takes no prisoners, it knows no boundaries and it does not discriminate.
Demons
In short, Demons is a psychological deep dive into the dark abyss of temptation.
The Way It Is
A true story about a broken man. When you find yourself face to face with tragedy and loss, the only thing left is hope and love.
You Could Be My Heroine
Originally referred to as ‘song two’ because it felt like the kind of track to put second in a set, purely because of its pace and raw energy. It’s a tale of redemption in search of salvation.
appreciate what we made. It just took a while.”
The elpee will be released on August 4, and the same night they’ll host a launch party at The Craufurd Arms in Wolverton. The bar side album listening party will begin at 9pm. Entry is free.
You’ll journey from the raw jagged postpunk guitars that air with ‘You Could Be My Heroine’ through the anthemic swagger of ‘The Way It Is’ to the delicately poised acoustic of ‘My Own Advice’, perfect for showcasing the range and fragility of Daniel’s voice, and the epic melancholic flower powered finale of ‘I Remember You’
It took two decades and a tragic turn of events to re-ignite the flame, but in these ‘Karma’ times the band have made good on their promise from years ago.
“I was pleasantly surprised when revisiting these songs at how fresh and punchy they still feel. We were able to give them a bit of a facelift in terms of the sound, but the raw energy needed little in the way of encouragement,” said Tony Platt, who was back for the production process, “I guess the band were somewhat ahead of their time!”
> Supakarma will be available as a limited edition on vinyl (300 copies) and available on all streaming platforms through Forte Distribution.
My Own Advice
A soul-bearing enigma wrapped up in an emotional riddle.
Calmer Coaster
It starts off with a kind of eerie hypnotic bass line and the opening guitar riff locks so rhythmically well, together they sound like the heartbeat of an engine room gathering momentum and it gradually morphs into this epic monster of a roller coaster full of dynamic twists and turns.
I Remember You (Say Goodbye)
A tribute to the new wave of aspiring musicians that emerged from the second summer of love in ’89 with a genuine swagger. A vision and a sense of destiny became apparent to the few that picked up a guitar and played while the rest of the raving acid house ‘baggies’ stood gazing at their shoes.

WHATS ON
The Big Park Hangout comes to Campbell Park on August 12
Dino delight with Teach Rex
School’s out, and so too are the many shows that usually jostle for position on our stages. There are still a few possibilities for August though, and they are monstrous and marvellous. Pulse’s Sammy Jones leads the way...
It’s a theatre-land classic and it is back on the stage here in Milton Keynes from Monday, August 7.
Annie is the childhood favourite brimming with hits like Tomorrow, Easy Street and It’s the Hard-Knock Life, and its MK return comes with added fab-u-lous-ness; with Strictly’s Craig Revel Horwood stepping out as the tyrannical Miss Hannigan. Just look at the pins on him!
Annie is set in New York during The Great Depression of the 1930s, and our young lady the show is named after is forced to live a life of misery at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage.
When she is chosen to spend a fairytale Christmas with famous billionaire Oliver Warbucks, things begin to look up, but spiteful Miss Hannigan isn’t about to let that happen easily and comes up with a plan to spoil Annie’s search for her true family...
The Times has declared this new production ‘a glorious revival,’ which is a decent endorsement.
Annie will be in the new city for just six days, so snooze and you’ll lose!
The curtain then comes down on the venue for a couple of weeks respite (and the chance to catch up on some maintenance) before 42nd Street tippety-taps in on August 28 with some familiar names leading the casting.
EastEnders’ Samantha Womack is back with us as Dorothy Brock, Michael Praed (The star of Robin Hood or Prince Michael of Moldavia in Dynasty depending on your TV persuasion) is in the role of Julian Marsh and Steps star Faye Tozer is Maggie Jones.
The enduring song-and-dance spectacular is a timeless and inspiring fairytale with tap dance routines, backstage intrigue, classic romance and delightful comedy.
Fresh off the bus from small-town America, young and beautiful Peggy Sawyer arrives in New York City dreaming of her name in lights. She quickly catches the eye of a big-time director and lands a spot in the chorus line of Broadway’s newest show… and when the leading lady gets injured, Peggy gets her shot at stardom.
If you feel down in the doldrums this is the show to put the fizz back!
Over at The Stables, funny fella Gary Delaney is back with more Punderland for you on August 25.
If you are hunting for snark, Gary’s got it covered, but only if you already have a ticket as this is a long time sold-out. Give the box office a call and try for returns. It’s worth a go.
A roar-some time is guaranteed for kiddies (and their grown-ups) with Teach Rex Live who make their Wavendon venue debut on August 27.
This is for ages three years and up, and puts them in front of some very life-like dinosaurs. It’s a unique show, and one that teaches youngsters about the anatomy and life of these most mesmerizing creatures that used to roam the earth.
Baby dino’s will greet ticket-holders and children will be given a Dino Booklet containing a variety of educational activities, and coloured crayons to get busy with!
This Jurassic event will delve into the jaws of arguably the most famous dinosaur of all – T-Rex. Primary school teachers will take the audience on an interactive, prehistoric journey and you’ll learn how he actually would have looked. Various T-Rex’s and a Velociraptor will be meeting and greeting the assembled, and after the hour long show, everyone will have the chance to get a selfie with the marvellous monsters. There are two performances – at 10am and 12.30pm.
An opportunity for one last treat before little people go back to school, perhaps?

Film Reviews
by Jordan Adcock
FILM OF THE MONTH - Star Rating: 4/5
Much was written last year about Tom Cruise coming to cinema’s rescue with Top Gun: Maverick, proving that belated sequels to classic films don’t have to be depressing letdowns (see Indiana Jones for the latest example of just that). This summer, Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt and not only is the Mission: Impossible series still going strong after nearly three decades, it’s a thrilling palate cleanser after a mostly mediocre summer at the movies. This time, Ethan and his team fight off multiple factions for the key to the Entity, a mysterious AI which could sabotage the world’s intelligence networks. On the way they encounter professional thief Grace (Hayley Atwell, who’s a well-judged addition to the series’ main cast) and Gabriel (played with casual intimidation by Esai Morales), a dangerous agent from Ethan’s pre-IMF past.
DEAD RECKONING PART ONE
It’s a long film, but besides arguably slowing the pacing of its final, audacious set piece on a train, you’ll barely notice as the intrigue and action tear across the world. And it’s action with real locations, choreography and stuntwork on show; more feels at stake and it’s frankly much more fun to watch than something consumed by CGI or deliberately cluttered filmmaking. I won’t give away Cruise’s signature stunt for this instalment, but you have to respect his commitment to keep pushing to create spectacles worth watching. There’s also no question he fully inhabits Ethan Hunt, and his chemistry with Atwell, playing both feisty and vulnerable, is very strong. Don’t worry about the “part one” aspect, eitherthis one’s a fully satisfying experience and you’ll itch to accept part two of this mission, coming next year.
ELEMENTAL
Star Rating: 2.5/5
Elemental could, at first glance, pass for a classic Pixar film. It’s got a pristinely computer-animated world, populated by sentient versions of the four elements, where love sparks between a young fire woman, Ember, and water man, Wade. But where films like the Toy Story series and Monsters, Inc.
(as just two examples) effortlessly blended ingenious worldbuilding with heartfelt, universal storytelling, Elemental isn’t so, well, elementary. Its obvious references to real-world immigration and prejudice make the film feel curiously smaller and more topical, and the plot fails to fully exploit its worldbuilding potential. It’s content to be essentially a romantic comedy in animated clothing. It’s much better than Pixar’s terrible spin-off film Lightyear but the formidable filmmaking reputation the studio had feels increasingly lost. ✪
INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY ASTEROID CITY
Star Rating: 2.5/5
You can rely on director Wes Anderson to be visually distinctive. With previous films like The Grand Budapest Hotel and Isle of Dogs, each shot is so deliberately composed yet with enough charm and essence that they don’t appear artificial. Asteroid City might be even more ambitious than those films as a meandering tale of a tiny desert town in 1950s America, even featuring a framing device where the story is both a play we watch and see developed behind the scenes. But this all comes at the expense of the genuine character and pathos which existed previously. There’s lots of dry dialogue, sprawling between an all-star cast (including Scarlett Johansson) diluted by its own abundance, culminating in a limp ending message to try and justify its own indulgence. ✪
THE FLASH
Star Rating: 1.5/5
Even if actor Ezra Miller’s recent litany of misdemeanours doesn’t leave a sour taste as they play Barry Allen/The Flash, this film (rightly) believes that their extremely awkward screen persona can’t carry a film alone. So we instead get lots of superhero cameos to fill the bloated screentime. Nothing better represents the attempted DC Comics cinematic universe’s abject failure, which started with 2013’s Man of Steel, than this film bringing back Michael Keaton’s Batman from 30 years ago in a convoluted time travel plot. What tiny sparks of story are here (Barry trying to save his mother from murder and his father from being framed across time) exist amid lots of truly uncanny CGI and the overwhelming feeling of remaining scraps being hurled onscreen to desperately create some audience interest. ✪
Star Rating: 1/5
It’s been 34 years since The Last Crusade capped the original Indiana Jones trilogy but his days as cinema’s most exciting adventurer feel even further away with this thoroughly miserable experience. Indiana Jones is now just a sad old man, living alone, divorcing Marian, his son’s dead in Vietnam and he’s about to retire. Doesn’t sound like much fun? At least his insufferable, self-interested goddaughter played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge will help him rediscover his mojo while also taking his place! Plus there’s incompetent Nazis who want to time travel. Harrison Ford, now aged eighty one, does his best with the wretched material but every action piece is tired, overlong and often outright laughable. It’s like the film was made to embarrass Ford and the character; it definitely doesn’t belong in a museum. ✪

Packing
Can it be true? Is Pulse carrying a written piece on being armed? Have you, dear reader, been transported to a place where reading a gun magazine is, something everyone does? Discussion of the best holster to use when packing heat is not something one might expect when reading a British publication.
Relax in the knowledge that a time and space displacement portal hasn’t opened up beside you. Being sucked in and deposited somewhere far flung, where guns are akin to carrying keys or mobile phones about one one’s person, is more a nightmare than a flight of science fiction or fantasy.
Yes, there is pain, but not the sort associated with the definition of packing as found in some parts of the world. It might be better described as aching. Muscles that have been coasting along these last few years have been rudely awakened and they have expressed their displeasure.
QUICK CROSSWORD
having a free moment and vehicle availability. Regardless, I got stuck in and made sure to drink lots of fluids. Afterwards I had a shower and once more weighed myself. The discovery that I was now 5lbs lighter than when I started came as a bit of a shock; especially considering I had drunk 3 onepint tankards of water during my encounter with the contents of the garage.
A house move is taking place.
I’m currently packing the O’Hara household into boxes. Once safely and securely ensconced in cardboard cocoons it will all begin a journey. It has no need to worry for there will be no guns nor nasty creatures with pointy teeth. It will just be another house.
However, the collection of domestic paraphernalia is wrathful. As the days of packing continue, the pleasure of bedtime doesn’t come close to offsetting the shock of the morning when the wake-up alarm goes off.
Then there is the heat, and it is not the sort gun enthusiasts refer to when they talk of packing. Sticky and horrendous.
I weighed myself the morning of sorting the garage and taking stuff to the tip. The weather was sunny and extremely hot. I wouldn’t have chosen that particular day to do such work, but it was about
As a way to lose weight, house move packing is very effective, but I can’t recommend it. Nor do I reckon on the painful after effects being a positive thing. The last time I moved house the removal company engaged offered a packing service. I smiled at the time. The current removal company made the same offer and I again smiled. After only packing a small portion of the household, I’m no longer smiling. Sure, I’m getting lighter, but I now have pains and aches in places I never thought possible.
Many years in the past, had I been asked whether it is worthwhile paying professionals to pack for me ahead of a move, I’d have laughed. If asked before starting this time, I’d still have laughed, but only until the aches and weight loss…

As a way to lose weight, house move packing is very effective, but I can’t recommend it. Nor do I reckon on the painful after effects being a positive thing.
Your stars
Flavour of the Times - Personal revelations, hidden issues, taboos coming to light – some social and political, some personal. This is all par for the course right now as both Saturn and Pluto smash backwards into our routines, expectations, structures – you name it, the old is crumbling and the new is not yet visible! Take a deep breath, keep your head down below the parapet and hang on for a rough ride well into the autumn (mixed metaphor alert!). It’s hard to stay positive but being observant about yourself, trying not to beat yourself up too much and just following calming routines like yoga and meditation will all smooth the way until the corner starts to turn in a few months’ time.
LEO
July 24 – August 23
A full moon in your sign on 1st may not feel like the most auspicious of starts to the month and you should be careful your ego does not get the better of you. Mid-month, things brighten up with Venus entering the picture, possibly bringing in a little romance. The new moon in Leo is on 15th but you would do well to remain wary as unconscious energies may be at play even if they are hidden.
VIRGO
August 24 – September 23
With Mars now in your sign, you will be able to take some practical steps to achieve results, but these are probably best seen as background things you need to get in place as preparation for bigger achievements. Mercury moves in to assist with communications so you will probably experience some satisfaction with small things well done this month.
LIBRA
September 24 – October 23
Being all things to all people can sometimes be a bit like a mask to hide behind, disguising your confusion because perhaps you really do not know who the hell you are these days! Some self-protection seems like a good idea but avoid too much negativity. There may be some gems under your feet you should look out for and try not to miss out on.
SCORPIO
October 24 – November 22
Perhaps some of the recent pressures ease a little this month? You may have felt a bit awkward and a bit quiet at times while others were being more extravert, but there is some room in these difficult days to make some progress in your relationship with the outside world. Your career aims may progress so long as you are sure of your direction of travel. Don’t expect it to be plain sailing though!
SAGITTARIUS
November 23 – December 22
For the second month running, you may find it hard to find a sense of personal freedom in everything that is going on. All manner of responsibilities, jobs that must be dealt with urgently are all getting in the way of your desire to just drop everything and be yourself. Things flow in your direction a bit more favourably towards the end of the month but even then, you may not get more than a weekend break.
CAPRICORN
December 23 – January 20
Difficult ‘stuff’ may surface from your past mid-month as you experience issues arising from past conditioning by parents and others. This may lead you to consider whether some of the constraints that you feel weighed down by really come from you or maybe they are things from the past that you should try to shake off.
AQUARIUS
January 21 – February 19
It may not feel as if beneficial cosmic energies are in your grasp at the moment but that doesn’t mean you should bury your head in the sand! There are many times when we would do best to plod our way methodically through the difficulties because it is the act of doing that sort of difficult work that will find its ultimate reward in the end.
‘All is coming’, but it’s just not yet!
PISCES
February 20 – March 20
Even though you like to flow with the tides, living with contradictions and maybe even contradicting yourself all the time, the lack of identifiable structures and organisation surrounding you now may have you feeling all at sea this month. When you are thrown into the sea, the best thing is just to float until you spy land.
You are bound to be affected personally by some if not all of the massive changes that are taking place this year. An astrological reading of your chart can forewarn you about how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you on a personal level during 2023, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. This is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year.
ARIES
March 21 – April 20
Sensitivities and perhaps ancient hurts are aroused as you search for the right way forward and your feelings should be taken seriously this month. This will present some challenges and discomfort, some of them possibly involving children early in the month, perhaps reaching a peak mid-month with a little respite coming at the end of it. Phew! You made it!!
TAURUS
April 21 – May 21
Jupiter is in your sign for a good while now, which heralds a search for some inner truths. You may be involved in teaching now and you will experience a strong desire for a more abundant lifestyle. The only real danger in this favourable influence is a tendency of overindulgence, but hey, some chocolate is good for you!
GEMINI
May 22 – June 21
Saturn going backwards in Pisces is quite a challenge for you and your world may be morphing in unusual ways that leave you uncertain of your ground in your community and with friends and family. Structures are shifting throughout society and in your world, generations may be passing away to be replaced by new relationships. Tread gently on the ground.
CANCER
June 22 – July 23
The water element flooded out July, didn’t it? This may have been true for you not just literally but emotionally, since Cancer rules the womb and is also a water sign. Deep feelings may have been expressed. August is more about traditional summer energies like the fire of the Sun in Leo and Mars in Virgo earth –scorched in too many places, I fear. You too?
