re you ready for #LoveMK Day at the end of the month?Destination Milton Keynes is asking for your help on the first official day celebrating our city status. You can get creative with the hashtag by painting, sewing or baking it. You might even like to make it out of flowers and share it on social media.
Did you know there’s a major project underway to raise funds for a state-of-the-art adventure centre? You can help the youth charity Action4Youth with its £1.4m campaign to create a new centre for outdoor activities.
Have you ever wondered who wins Willen Hospice’s prize draws? This winter’s lucky winner was 100-year-old Joan. She bought her tickets after reading the autumn Friends of Willen Supporter magazine. You could be next – the Summer Draw is launching soon.
Of course, we’re looking forward to a cracking time this month with all the Easter events. The Parks Trust is inviting you to its free Easter Egg Hunt. You might even meet the Easter Bunny. You can visit Howe Park Wood Education Centre too. Or you can search for hidden eggs at MK Museum or Wolverton Secret Garden.
At the Kelmarsh Show there’s everything from parachutes to paws along with plenty of food and fun activities. If you head over to Rushden Station on Easter Sunday or Monday you can ‘hop’ aboard the Easter Bunny Express. There’s an Easter hunt, crafts for the children, and you could bump in to the Easter Bunny here too.
While we’re talking about bunnies, the RSPCA in Milton Keynes is currently taking care of almost two dozen furry friends that are looking for forever homes. If you have a suitable space and some time and patience, could you welcome another pet?

#LoveMK Day 2023 date announced
It’s the biggest one-day social media celebration of Milton Keynes… and Destination Milton Keynes, the city’s official tourism organisation, is asking the people of Milton Keynes to help celebrate the first #LoveMK Day as an official city.
For more than ten years, #LoveMK Day has promoted Milton Keynes as a leisure and business destination whilst also asking people to harness the pride that many have in the place they call home.
This year, on April 27, Destination Milton Keynes (DMK) will be celebrating the first #LoveMK Day since Milton Keynes was officially awarded city status by Her Majesty The Queen in May last year.
DMK and partners throughout the city will be asking the social media community to use the hashtag #LoveMK on all their tweets on April 27 and get creative with that hashtag. Paint it, sew it, bake it, make it out of flowers… you name it, they want to see it.
“The idea for #LoveMK Day started in a very small way over a decade ago,” says DMK marketing manager Carys Underwood. “We never really dreamed we would one day be celebrating with official city status.
“We want to see just how much the people who live and work here love MK. All that energy is harnessed across one day when
you can shout about it from the rooftops and show off why Milton Keynes is such a fantastic city.”
To find out more about Destination Milton Keynes or #LoveMK Day head to their social media pages @DestinationMK or destinationmiltonkeynes.co.uk

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a lightall fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our watchwords
are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.
Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been
referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.
At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9552 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!
Established for over 16 years, Cloudy2Clear windows have become the UK’s leading company for domestic glass replacement. Customers are no longer needing to risk their windows by using the dreaded double glazing cowboy down the road, instead, now they can join over 320,000 happy customers and have their glass replaced in an affordable and ethical manner. Remember, a failed glass unit may no longer provide you with the protection you need or be energy efficient. Why not spend a few minutes checking your home to see if you have
any failed double glazing? If you act now you can avoid any future costly problems.
When talking to the Manager of Cloudy2Clear windows Stephen Moon it became clear that these values have been held dear for a number of years. Since starting the business some years ago Cloudy2Clear have remained true to their core values of supporting the local community by providing a service that saves the public money. The Cloudy2Clear service only requires the glass to be replaced and not the whole window
once the unit has failed. Stephen commented “Cloudy2Clear were able to assist our community through the last financial crisis in 2008 due to the savings that can be made in using our service. Unfortunately we might be going through something similar again soon and the public can rest assured that we will be there to help once again”.

Back to the Roaring Twenties as charity celebrates fundraising extravaganza in style
The money raised, including via a live auction, will give hope to hundreds of children in need and provide Ride High, based at Loughton, with some security during what is likely to be a very challenging year for charities.
Staged at Leonardo Hotel in Central Milton Keynes, the ball included showstopping performances from the Romeo Dance Academy, a casino and a 1920s-inspired eight-piece band. It also paused for epotional reflections by young people helped by Ride High on how its work to transform the lives of disadvantaged children by giving them the opportunity to learn to ride and look after horses and ponies has brought lasting change in their attitude, wellbeing and self-confidence.
The post-war decade was the theme this year’s annual ball hosted by children’s charity Ride High… and the charity is catching its breath after more than 200 guests at the occasion raised a staggering £113,000.
Becca told guests at the ball that the charity had been her lifeline during challenging times. She spoke of her struggle to find the support she needed until a health care professional referred her to Ride High. The charity, which also operates a
public riding school, at its base at Loughton Manor, gave her the confidence, strength and determination to carry on. She had graduated from university last year and thanked Ride High for playing a pivotal part in her achievements.
Ride High chief executive Olivia Sugdon thanked guests and businesses – including ball sponsor Sysmex UK –for their contribution to the “fabulous” fundraising total. “Their efforts will help us to support more children in the greatest need this year than ever before,” she said. The auction lots included artwork created by Ride High members in their clubroom sessions. The children presented the special piece on the night… and a bidding war concluded with longstanding Ride high supporter Marshall Amplification winning the artwork for the second year running.

‘A range of services for the elderly’
50plus began as a handyman service some 21 years ago. Today, the service portfolio has grown to include a broad set of home repair, improvement and commercial services and very much in keeping with the company’s name, a range of services for the elderly.
50plus was originally conceived as a means of providing employment for those aged 50plus and the company continues with this concept. The idea of using mature service providers together with a service orientated structure also chimes with customers who are 50plus and the company reports that the majority of its domestic customers are 65 plus!
50plus is run from a head office in Buckinghamshire with field staff distributed over a wide area including Milton Keynes and the surrounds. In keeping with the times the company offers online services in addition to telephone booking and has embraced technology to provide a range of easy to use technically enabled services for our elderly customers.
Telephones (and today email, text, web enquiries, WhatsApp and more) are answered, advice is provided and appointments are run on a date and time basis. As they say: they are different - it’s all about the service.
In addition to booking and administrative staff, the head office has personnel who provide technical support and advice for both customers and service providers. They also maintain an on-line ‘knowledge centre’ on the company’s web site where hints and advice on what needs doing, what to look for and how long repairs may take.
To find out more about what 50plus does and the services they offer visit the 50plus web site at www.the50plus.co.uk or call 01494 784 448.

Developing life skills in the great outdoors
Youth charity Action4Youth launches £1.4m campaign to create state-of-the-art inclusive adventure centre in Milton Keynes.
A£1.4 million campaign to create a new centre for outdoor adventure education in Milton Keynes is under way.
Plans are being made by the charity Action4Youth to transform its existing Caldecotte Xperience centre, on a 70-acre site next to Caldecotte Lake, into a totally accessible facility for young people aged from three to 24.
The new-look centre is being designed by Milton Keynes-based Benchmark Architects with the aim to repurpose the existing 30-year-old building with state-of-the-art facilities to maximise use of the space. New features will include:
• Wide, welcoming, easily to navigate spaces with wheelchair accessible corridors;
• Multi-functional spaces;
• Fully accessible toilet, shower and changing areas;
• Drying and boot room - essential given the range of watersports on offer at TCX;
• Improved kitchen and catering areas;
• Open plan office space enabling accessible job opportunities.
Action4Youth chief executive Jennifer Cameron says the project will benefit thousands more young people. “Outdoor and adventure education is immensely stimulating for children of all abilities. With the changes we are bringing to the centre buildings, we will be able to provide fully
accessible, practical and comfortable facilities for more young people all year round, particularly for those with special needs.”
“This exciting and vital regional project will open up the exceptional Caldecotte Xperience to many more young people by increasing accessibility across the whole site,” says Action4Youth’s president The Countess Howe.
“It will give opportunity for all to taste adventure and experience the transformational qualities which participation affords.” she adds.
Those experiences can be life-changing, adds Lady Howe who is also HM LordLieutenant of Buckinghamshire. “They build morale, friendships, teamworking and confidence and the values of sportsmanship and working together. I am wholeheartedly behind this project and know that Action4Youth really does give life skills, developing that inner resilience and confidence which helps young people cope with whatever life throws at them.”

Meet £3,000 Willen Hospice Winter Draw winner, 100 year old Joan!
Meet Joan, 100 years old and celebrating after winning Willen Hospice’s Winter Draw.
She is pictured after receiving her £3,000 winnings when hospice staff called into her home in Two Mile Ash to deliver the good news and the cheque.
The centenarian bought her £1 tickets after reading about the draw in the autumn Friends of Willen Supporter Magazine when it dropped through her letterbox.
“It was absolutely wonderful,” said Joan. “I never even dreamt I would win. I’d even forgotten all about the draw so it was even more surprise.”
The Winter Draw takes place alongside the Willen Hospice weekly lottery, in which one person is guaranteed to win £1,000 every week. Tickets are on sale in Willen Hospice shops around the city.
How does Joan plan to spend her winnings? “Well, I am going to give £500 to Willen,” she says. “With the other money I will probably treat my family.”
The draw has raised a total of more than £28,000 for the hospice. The hospice receives less than 25% of it’s funding from the NHS so the draws help raise vital funds to provide specialist palliative care services for local people. Look out for the Summer Draw launching soon.

Cohabitees and Property Ownership
In the UK, cohabiting couples face legal challenges in property ownership due to the absence of automatic rights and legal protections. This article explores the options available for cohabitees to own property and the legal implications of each option.
As the number of cohabiting, unmarried couples continue to grow in the UK it is important for cohabitees to protect their assets and contributions in the event of separation. Cohabitees do not have the protection of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 (MCA) which provides a right to a financial claim against all assets of the marriage regardless of how the assets are held, for cohabitees usually their financial rights are limited to assets that are in joint names only.
In a previous article we explained how cohabitation agreements and declarations of trust can confirm and protect a cohabitee’s interest for assets held in the other cohabitee’s name. In the absence of these documents, a cohabitee can also acquire a beneficial interest in an asset by establishing that a trust exists between the two cohabitees. A trust can arise where one person owns the legal title of an asset on behalf of or for the benefit of another person (the beneficiary).
Resulting trust, constructive trust and proprietary estoppel are trusts that can provide protection to a cohabitee who may be a beneficiary of an asset and not the legal owner.
Resulting trust
Resulting trusts arise where one cohabitee contributes towards the purchase of an asset but is not a legal owner; for example, a cohabitee who has contributed towards the deposit on a property but whose name does not appear on the legal title to the property. It is important for the cohabitee (beneficial owner) to evidence that their financial contribution was not intended as a gift or a loan.
In the event of a separation and dispute over the monetary value or percentage of the beneficiary’s interest, the court will calculate the beneficiary’s entitlement based on the deposit, the purchase price, and the capital appreciation in the property. Prior to any final determination being made, the court will also look at other factors, including any constructive trusts to ensure that each party is awarded a percentage which accords with their true entitlement.
mortgage or paying for significant renovation works. There must be an understanding between the cohabitants and the contributions must be significant so that it would be unconscionable for the cohabitee who holds the title of the asset to deny the beneficial party any interest.
The court will look to see evidence of common intention between the parties to share the beneficial interest of the property based on their behaviours and words. It would be unlikely that a cohabitee who holds no legal ownership, would make significant financial contributions without a common intention and expectation that they will acquire a beneficial interest in the property.
Generally, contributions to household expenses other than the mortgage are much less likely to establish a trust. However, indirect contributions to the mortgage may mean that the court will infer that the cohabitees commonly intended that the non-owning party should have a beneficial interest.
Proprietary Estoppel
Proprietary Estoppel arises when assurances are given by the cohabitee with legal ownership (either verbally or by way of conduct) to the other that they will acquire an interest in the property. The party receiving the assurances must act to their detriment by relying on that assurance to such a degree that it would be unfair and unreasonable to allow the other cohabitee to go back on the promise.
Proprietary estoppel is wider and more flexible than a constructive trust, as it simply requires an assurance to be shown rather than a common intention.
The above information is for general guidance only and does not constitute legal advice.
Heald Solicitors disclaims and excludes any liability in respect of the contents of this article or for action taken based on this information. If you need legal advice, please contact a solicitor.
Resulting trusts can only be established by a direct contribution towards the purchase price by a partner who is not the legal owner.
Constructive trust
For a constructive trust to arise, the cohabitee who is not the legal owner must show that there was a common intention to share ownership and that they acted in reliance on this to their detriment.
The common intention can be established by an express agreement, or it can be implied from the cohabitees’ conduct. The court will generally find that a trust exists based on discussions in the course of which the legal owner agrees, either explicitly or implicitly, that the non-legal owner has an interest in the property. If this instance were to arise, the legal owner, would have to give evidence to show why the equity should not be shared.
Constructive trusts are implied through circumstances where a beneficiary has acted to their detriment, thus leading them to acquire a beneficial interest in the property. For instance, making financial contributions to towards the
If you are not a joint legal owner of an asset, such as the family home, but have made a direct financial contribution towards the deposit, it is always advisable to have a formal document, such as Declaration of Trust, drawn up to ensure that your interest in the property is protected. A Declaration of Trust is usually prepared at the time of the purchase of the property; however, it can also be drafted afterwards, particularly in circumstances where subsequent financial contributions are made towards the mortgage or payments are made for home improvements and so forth, which give rise to a beneficial interest. Similarly, if there is a common intention to share ownership, there is no reason why either party should be resistant to preparing a Declaration of Trust confirming the extent of the non-owner cohabitee’s beneficial interest.
Nevertheless, in the event that there is no Declaration of Trust, and a dispute arises as to ownership, being able to establish a trust based on the parties’ conduct, can also provide a remedy.

Is a Kitchen re-spray the new way to update and save?
Many of us have thought about repainting our kitchen cupboards as a way of refreshing them without replacing, especially since we have had more time at home. But concerns over the finish achievable and how well the paint would last usually puts us off making a mess of things.
Now local company FX-SPRAY MK is offering a complete professional paint spray service for kitchens. It is a quick and simple process that leaves your kitchen looking brand new, says FX-SPRAY MK. The company removes and sprays 90 per cent of the kitchen off site, which means that very little work has to be done in your home, in turn meaning minimal disruption. An average kitchen can be completed within a week and home owners continue to use it during the process.
FX-SPRAY MK only use specialist products and having the latest spray equipment means the company delivers that brand new factory finish. A colour matching service to all major paint brands gives a huge choice - you can even go with a two-colour scheme.
“Can any kind of kitchen can be refinished or is respraying just for solid wood?” As long as your kitchen is in reasonable condition, FX-SPRAY MK can refinish it., even carrying out minor repairs and changing handles as part of the process.
FX-SPRAY MK also treats doors, windows and furniture. For more information or a free quote, email jason@fxfinishing.co.uk or visit www.fxfinishing.co.uk

I have separated, how soon should I divorce?
When a married couple first decides to separate, they often have several decisions to make:
– Should I be considering divorce? Is it too soon?
– Should I go and see a solicitor yet?
– Should we both remain in the family home?
What shall we do about our finances in the meantime?
The biggest dilemma many people face is the decision about how soon they should be starting the divorce process.
Should I commence the divorce straight away?
For some, the priority is to start the divorce process and tie up any loose ends with their partner at the earliest opportunity, to enable them to move on with their lives.
The divorce system in England and Wales is a ‘no fault’ system, meaning that you no longer have to give any reasons why you are divorcing your spouse. Equally, divorces cannot be defended. Given that it is now so easy to obtain a divorce, the government has introduced a ‘waiting period’ after your application is made before you can progress the divorce. The waiting period is some 20 weeks. This means that divorces are currently taking around 6 months from start to finish.
We are, therefore, seeing that a lot of people are keen to start the divorce process as soon as possible, given how long it takes to conclude. The 20 week wait is an ideal time for separating couples to be having discussions and seeking to agree the terms of a financial arrangement between them. This can include arrangements for the family home, maintenance and pension provision, among others.
Should I delay the divorce?
An early divorce does not appeal to everyone and many people have their reasons for not wanting to divorce straight away. For some, the prospect of reconciliation cannot be discounted. Others have financial motivations for waiting.
There are many reasons why you may feel that an immediate divorce is not appropriate. However, you may be concerned about how this will affect you in the future, particularly financially, if matters are left in abeyance. It is possible to enter into a separation agreement, detailing the terms of your separation. This can be converted into a formal agreement as and when divorce proceedings are underway. Many clients see this as an amicable alternative to an early divorce.
Early advice is essential
Whichever option you choose, we strongly recommend that you take legal advice at an early stage. This will ensure that any decision you take will not adversely impact you in the future. If you would like advice and support regarding your separation, contact our specialist team of family lawyers today.
Our Divorce and Family Law team can assist with all manner of issues surrounding separation.

The Parks Trust is also holding an Easter Eggstravaganza at Ouzel Valley Park on Wednesday, April 5. Themed crafts and activities and an adventure on their Easter trail awaits.

Enjoy an Easter eggstravaganza with The Parks Trust
An Easter Egg Trail around Abington Park Museum will be running between Tuesday, April 4 and Sunday, April 9.
It costs £2 to partake in the hunt and every child will receive a choccie egg prize. Get more details, and book places by visiting northamptonmuseums.com
The hunt will once again be on at Milton Keynes Museum this Easter when the search for hidden eggs begins – all leading the way to yummy chocolate rewards, of course.
It is a cracking way to celebrate the festive period – and the egg hunt ensures everyone wins something. Find the exceedingly rare eggs and you’ll get a bumper amount of chocolate treats, so keep your eyes peeled.
The eggs will be dotted around inside the Museum and around the grounds, ensuring a fantastic time for all as you enjoy a wonderful tour of the history hub along the way.
The Museum is also inviting visitors to get stuck into some Easter themed craft activities.
It’s traditional family fun suitable for little chicks and older bunnies alike, and the four day event (April 7-10) is also choc-full of nonsweetie goodness, with plenty of hands-on interaction getting you closer to the past.
Good Friday will be a great Friday for those youngsters who take part in the annual egg hunt organised by Emily’s Star
The Milton Keynes-based charity is once again inviting children to hunt around Wolverton’s Secret Garden in search of letters to guess the hidden word.
All children will receive a prize of an Easter egg or a non-chocolate alternative, and a personalised certificate.
If you want more than chocolate, you’ll be in luck – a barbecue will be serving up savouries, and there will also be a small number of fundraising stalls to take attention.
The hunt begins at 10am and will wrap up at 2pm (last entry at 1.30pm).
Tickets are £4.50 per little person, with adults going for free. Book by clicking to emilystar.co.uk and click on events.
> A limited number of tickets will be available for children who need a calmer and quieter environment to be able to enjoy the hunt. Those ticket holders can arrive at 9.30am and won’t need to queue in order to enjoy the festive fun.
Will you be able to find the eight decorated eggs that have been hidden in the Walled Garden at Delapre Abbey?
Follow the trail and match the patterns to your bingo card and you’ll be rewarded with a chocolate prize – and dairy free options are available, which is fantastic.
A simply egg-cellent time is for the taking for youngsters and their grown-ups, who will also be able to take part in craft activities, lawn games and more.
While on site you will be able to take a look at the 19th century stables which are due for restoration. What do you think the space could be used for? If you have event
or activity ideas, the Abbey would love to hear them.
Come April showers or shine, the egg hunt will be fine – it takes more than a little rain to stop play at this event, which is recommended for those aged 11 years and under.
The Easter Eggstravaganza runs from Good Friday to Easter Monday, between 10am and 4pm daily, with timed entry.
Tickets are £2.50 per child (babes-in-arms go free) and you would be wise to pre-book –visit delapreabbey.org

The animals will be on their best behaviour and ready to greet you too – it’s a welcome chance to meet the furries and the farm animals and show them some love.
You can pop to the cattery, be social with the doggies when they are out for walkies around the site, and swing by to see the resident farm animals living a safe life in the care of AIN. Entry is just £2 and if you are feeling peckish, the cafe will be open and serving lots of yummy vegan food.
St Peter’s Church in Brackley invites primary school aged children (and their grown-ups) to get in ‘the mix’ and Bake the Easter Story on Saturday, April 8, with an event that will explore the meaning of Easter...but might just include a sprinkling of 100s and 1000s!

Ticket-holders will have the opportunity to meet the guests (in the past, Pikachu, Iggle Piggle, Bugs Bunny, Elsa, Olaf and The Greatest Showman have made appearances) with some lucky youngsters able to join onstage for a really special time. And parents, don’t get pop envy – you’ll be able to get involved too!
Adding to the fun, there will be giveaways and prizes, a face painter, full lighting and laser show, confetti, foam and more.
Little ears are fragile and so the sounds will be monitored and kept at a safe level. The Popkids Neon Rave will run between 1pm and 3pm on Wednesday, April 12. As organisers say, ‘There ain’t no party like a Popkids party!’

The real meaning of Easter
There is no shortage of egg hunts to be had in the coming weeks, but in Milton Keynes, Church Without Walls (CWW) will mark Holy Week and Easter with a weeklong series of events planned.
They begin with a Palm Sunday Dinner at Broughton Field School (Sunday, April 2, from midday) where visitors can eat, chat, pray and reflect on the events of Palm Sunday.
The family-friendly opportunity will end with bread and wine shortly before 1.30pm. A day later, the Easter Trail will begin. The fun will run through to Easter Sunday, and if you are up for the challenge, you will travel across Broughton and Brooklands, following the clues in the windows, learning the Easter story as you go.
A Maundy Thursday gathering is being hosted at the Hummingbirds Children’s Centre on April 6 with a shared meal, prayers and reflections.
“As Jesus gathered with his disciples to share a meal on the night before he died, so we gather as a community to eat and pray together during this holy week,” said Ruth Maxey, Community Minister for Broughton & Brooklands.
Byte on this!
The National Museum of Computing has some STEAM Family half term activities in the diary, guaranteed to unlock imaginations, inspire and entertain young minds.
There are three drop-in sessions each day (11am-12.30pm, 1.30pm-3pm, 3.30pm-5pm) meaning that there is plenty of opportunity to explore the Museum too. Sessions on various days will cover robotics, programming, digital music, engineering and augmented and virtual reality.
Those wanting to get a feel for all the activities, but who can only make it along to one event are advised to check in on Saturday, April 8 or 15 for the ‘A Bit of Everything’ sessions which will cover the most popular activities. Visit tnmoc.org to discover what’s on, when.
Easter for Everyone –happening on Good Friday – is a child friendly morning of crafts and activities at Broughton Fields Primary School between 10.30am and midday.
Little participants can get creative making Easter gardens, before a simple service will explain the Easter story. Drinks and hot cross buns will be available.
The Church of St Lawrence in Broughton will welcome you for Good Friday Meditation (April 7, 3pm), but this is one event unsuitable for young children.
The same church invites you to Easter Sunday Communion (April 9, 9.30am) before the focus switches to Broughton Fields School from 10.45am for the Easter Sunday Celebration –enjoy warming, toasted hot cross buns, pasties and coffee, worship and an egg hunt before sharing in communion.
For more information on any of the events mentioned visit the FB page @mkchurchwithoutwalls drop an email to mkcommunityministry@gmail.com or click to mkchurchwithoutwalls.org.uk

You could hold your own chocolate hunt around the house, using own-brand choccies, or sweeties. Kids don’t care where they are searching, just so long as they get the reward at the end!
Be crafty
Arm them with some pieces of coloured paper, some stick on eyes, a couple of pipe cleaners, a few empty toilet roll tubes and some crayons, and who knows what they’ll present you with when they let their imaginations run loose. And they can do it at the kitchen table.
You don’t need to bake it – you can fake it. Kids love being little helpers in the kitchen, and while it can be messy, it doesn’t need

Get outside
We’re now in spring, and signs are everywhere, as the hardiest of flowers dare to bloom, seeking out the early sun. We live in an area bursting with green spaces where you can enjoy the new life, so jump in - connect with nature and fill your lungs with fresh air.
Get busy with the seeds
Little ‘uns love getting grubby, and if you help them plant seeds, they’ll love watching them grow, too – fun and educational in exchange for a few pence. You could even start with something super simple, like cress heads. They don’t have to be grown in egg shells, you could use yogurt pots or even potatoes – once a grown up has scooped out a hollow in the top and made a flat surface at the base - little gardeners in training can get to work. And they’ll sprout in days.

Find some bunny to love
The Easter bunny is one of the enduring images of the festive season, and while the exact origins are unknown, the story of the long-eared lovely who lays, decorates and hides eggs seems to have been popularised in the 1800s. Rabbits are considered a symbol of new life, but all too often these beautiful, gentle creatures are getting a raw deal. It’s enough to make you hopping mad, as Pulse’s Sammy Jones discovered when she spoke with Louise Norman from the local branch of the RSPCA.
Currently there are close to two dozen bunnies in the care of the RSPCA in Milton Keynes, but there are many more on a waiting list with owners keen to give up their pets to the charity just as soon as a space becomes available.
“We take weekly calls from RSPCA inspectors and members of the public needing to re-home rabbits,” said small animal co-ordinator Louise, “We are seeing an increase in people desperate to re-home them due to the cost of living crisis, and not being able to house, feed and keep on top of the vet bills. These are the people we really want to be able to help...”
But, sadly, some owners are simply irresponsible. “Unfortunately, many of our spaces are taken up by rabbits because people have decided to get another pet; some have introduced a kitten or a puppy and so can’t keep the rabbit. Others bought the rabbit for the children but they are now bored and the parents don’t have the time to care for it.”
But the biggest problem of all, are those irresponsible owners who breed them for cash, and then, when these sweet little beings don’t sell, they are ditched.
It’s a cruel practice by people keen to make a quick buck, no pun intended.
And yet, if people chose to bypass unscrupulous breeders, things would change for the better.

FEATURE
The enduring image of the bunny ‘wabbit’ is of a long-eared lovely munching grass contentedly while throwing the odd binky.
Sadly, all too often a rabbit becomes the forgotten pet, locked inside a cage that is too small, being fed as an afterthought.
“Years ago, hutches were only used to keep rabbits in to get them fat before people would eat them!” Louise said, “Nowadays, a hutch alone is never enough. A rabbit needs a cage a minimum of three metres long, by two metres wide and one metre tall – to enable them to do a minimum three consecutive hops and so that they are able to stand up on their hind legs and stretch.
“A shed or a children’s playhouse with a run attached is perfect – and often cheaper than buying a double hutch and a run,” she says.
“Think about how rabbits live in the wild –they need a vast space to be able to display natural behaviour such as digging, running through tunnels, chewing and foraging. They need lots of natural enrichment and toys to keep them occupied and prevent them from getting bored and chewing their home!”
If you are thinking of introducing a bunny into your family, they are wonderful additions, but don’t act in haste; think about those day-to-
day costs involved - unexpected veterinary bills can be a shock to the system, so pet insurance is to be advised. And you have to be sure that you can provide a home for the duration of its life, which on average can be between five and eight years, but could be longer.
“Rabbits need a yearly combination vaccination to protect them against myxomatosis, viral haemorrhagic disease and a second variant (RHD2) which are all diseases that can be fatal to an unvaccinated pet.
“Both sexes also need neutering to prevent certain cancers – females are very prone to uterine cancers. Neutering also helps with hormonal, behavioural and dominance issues, and is important when bonding rabbits.”
That’s right, rabbits. Plural. Because Louise says that one rabbit isn’t a good idea – a pair (or more) is the way to go: “In the wild, rabbits are social creatures and this is no different in domestic rabbits, so they should be kept in pairs, at least. Rarely is a lone bunny a happy bunny. They need species of their own kind to communicate with, and humans can never compare to the companionship of another rabbit to snuggle with.”
You might like the idea of a cuddly, fluffy pet, but they might not be so keen to be grabbed: “They do make great pets, but being a prey species, once they hit their teenage years, they are not always keen on being picked up and cuddled – they much prefer you to get down to their level and stroke them.”
And how about a bunny’s diet? They need special nuggets and herbs, supplemented by large amounts of hay to eat, which isn’t only tasty, but helps to keep their teeth worn down –bunnies teeth grow constantly.
They love their veggies too – we could learn a thing or two from their healthy diet; they are particularly partial to leafy greens, and root vegetables like carrots, which should be given only as a treat.
When I was younger, I would often be seen walking home with a ‘bouquet’ of dandelion leaves. It might have looked odd, but for my pet those leaves were akin to a chocolate bar! It goes without saying that they should always have access to fresh water, too.
So, you’ve thought through the pros and cons and decided that you can provide some bunnies with a loving home. Then what? Have another think. Don’t rush it.
And when you are ready, be smart: “Please adopt, don’t shop,” urges Louise, “By adopting you literally create a space to save another life, and by going to a rescue, you get rabbits that will already be vaccinated, neutered and microchipped.”
And remember, a bunny is for life, definitely not just for Easter.
> Perhaps you aren’t in a position to adopt, but would still like to support the RSPCA

Water Panbrioche
METHOD
INGREDIENTS
Ingredients for 12 small buns or one loaf tin:
280g 00 flour - or plain flour, or any weak flours
125ml warm water
30g vegetable oil
4g dry yeast
5g salt
1. In a bowl place your dry ingredients and mix well. You can prepare this by hand or using a stand mixer. Create a well, and start pouring in your wet ingredients.
2. Combine well and let it rest for about 15 minutes. After this time, transfer to a surface and knead until the dough is smooth.
3. Form in a ball and place back in the bowl lightly oiled, to rise. You can prepare this the night before and leave it in the fridge overnight, or let it rise at room temperature, until doubles in size. After the first proof, it’s time to shape. The quantities will give you 12 dough balls of about 38/40g each. Shape each making sure to twist the bottom, and place them in a muffin tin lightly oiled, for the second rise.
4. After about 2 hours, wash the top with oil and sprinkle some sesame seeds as I did, if preferred.
5. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 190° C / Gas Mark 5 until dark golden on top and sound hollow if tapped at the bottom.

Encourage the minibeasts
The Easter break is coming, which for parents means the headache of entertaining the kids for a fortnight, and you can’t do an egg hunt every day!
But keeping their attention doesn’t need to be taxing, or expensive – we’ve got just the thing to spark their imaginations, and you’ll enjoy it too!
Introducing youngsters to the delights of the garden is a great thing, but while they might not get as excited as you do about pruning trees or perfect edging, all kids love mud, bugs and being creative – so get them engaged in making a minibeast hotel
Bug hotels provide great shelter for many kinds of insects and bugs; woodlice, earwigs, ladybirds, solitary bees, centipedes, snails and spiders will enjoy the accommodation. Your hotel will be unique, of course, but whether you provide them with a budget place to lay their heads, or an insect version of the Dorchester is really down to you, and the choice of materials you use.
You can be as creative as you like, and make good use of items that might well otherwise go to waste.
A simple wooden box or old pallet will provide you with a solid base from which to work –you’ll need to leave it open at one end, and can then begin filling it with natural materials that will be attractive to bed down in.
Try to mix it up when it comes to furnishings; wood and plant matter are all good additions, but the list of materials might also include old plant pots or roofing tiles, woodchips, moss, old cardboard (rolled up) pine cones and bark. Bricks are ideal too; they are weighty and if you use the ones with holes in, you’ll maximise spaces for visitors to utilise.
If you have old logs to put towards the project, drilling holes into them will encourage guests.
Top Tip
Now that you are back outdoors, you’ll be noticing that spring flowers aren’t the only thing popping their heads towards the early sun – weeds are becoming active too. The easiest way to deal with weeds amongst your flowers and veggie patches is to use a hoe, but a fork or your fingers are fine too.
It’s all about providing the little creatures with nooks and crannies, and warm spots where they can snuggle up.
Kids will love creating these little houses, but they don’t need to be petite – if you’ve got the space and the materials, feel free to build a high-rise!
Bug hotels aren’t just about bed spaces though – they’ll be wanting dinner too, and nectar rich flowers planted close by will be appreciated by visiting bees and butterflies.
The only other thing a bug hotel requires is
to be dry, so think about where in the garden you will place yours – it’s best not to pop it straight next to your vegetables or flowers in case the visitors decide on some unwanted snacking, and it obviously needs to be on flat, solid ground.
Then, sit back and wait for the minibeasts to move in.
It’s a great way to encourage children to learn about nature on their doorstep, and a brilliant way to use up some of that school holiday time productively!
Depending on the area you are treating, and the nature of growth, you might choose to use mulch or edging barriers to keep things in check.
Whatever you decide, you need to understand that weeds will always return, and that weed killers are never the best or preferred way to solve the problem.

Is Solar Energy The Right Choice For Me?
With growing concerns about our carbon footprint, and energy prices continuing to rise, many homeowners are turning to solar energy to help power their homes and protect themselves against inflation.
Asolar energy system is made up of panels, which harness energy from the sun, inverters, which convert the current from DC to AC so it’s usable in your home, and battery storage, so energy generated during daylight hours is used in the evening, when more people are likely to be home. Excess energy is then fed back into the grid for which you may receive a small payment from one of the energy companies. If saving money is your priority, the ideal system is one which minimises electricity used from the grid, and maximises the use of energy generated by the installation. If your aim is to help save the planet from carbon emissions you may want to have as large a system as possible, given the roof size, whatever your own energy usages needs are.

Community iniatives aim to assist Milton Keynes residents
Milton Keynes City Council works hard to deliver essential services and provide support for residents. This year, we will be distributing millions of pounds in financial assistance, allocating more money for local businesses and high streets, and investing further in improving the city’s roads, pathways and landscaping. Aside from the core essentials, we will also roll out unique schemes that benefit residents and just some of these are mentioned below.
Making Milton Keynes dementia friendly
The City Council is working closely with local charities, businesses and organisations so that MK can become a dementia-friendly city. This partnership is working on a broad range of city-wide and local community projects including improvements to signage and building design, through to new training and education programmes. We have also just extended a service that offers dedicated to support to people with dementia and their carers. The Dementia Information Support Service (DISS) has helped hundreds of people over the past two years, and it’s proven invaluable. As more and more people are sadly diagnosed with dementia each year, it’s important that the City Council ensures these individuals, and their carers, feel properly supported.
Launching free community clubs in local estates
This year, we’re rolling out new community clubs in Fullers Slade and continuing to fund a scheme in the Lakes Estate so local people can have access to activities that boost their wellbeing and tackle social isolation. Lakes and Fullers Clubs will be run by residents, community groups and
organisations. The free clubs could range from entertainment or skills classes to sports and physical activities. This forms part of our wider efforts to keep people connected and boost wellbeing, especially during the cost-of-living crisis.
Providing support for homeowners struggling with mortgage interest
This year, we will be launching a £250,000 Mortgage Interest Relief Fund to help homeowners struggling with skyrocketing interest rates. This scheme will provide short-term support for people who may be at risk of defaulting, and it will give them extra time to secure their finances. In reality, paying an extra £100 - £200 a month on mortgage payments could be the difference between keeping your home or ending up on the streets. This pot of money will prove a lifeline to those struggling.

MK’s visit from the King
The Mayor, Cllr Amanda Marlow looks back on a busy month which included a visit from HM King Charles III to formally confer city status on Milton Keynes and an opportunity to honour Newport Pagnell’s own sporting heroine.
I’ve had a busy few months since the start of the year, but for me February, was a huge month in terms of there being a wealth of engagements and event to attend.
At the start of the month, I was very lucky to be invited to go along on a Thames Valley Police Ride-along, which is when you are able to accompany police officers on their shift as a civilian observer. I joined a police constable called Joe for his evening shift from 5pm through to 3am. When we started the shift to go out to our first emergency call, I buckled my seatbelt and Joe said to me, “Do you get car sick?”, I replied that I didn’t and with that he flicked on the blue lights of the patrol car, and we drove quickly away to the emergency call. The police officers I met that night were incredible, and I was full of admiration for the work that they do with keeping our city safe. All four calls that we attended to throughout the night were sadly of young people aged between 14 and 17, with three of the calls having a mental health element to them. I witnessed first hand how our local police here in Milton Keynes, treated everyone with the utmost respect and compassion, regardless of whether the person was the victim or the suspect. It was a truly eye opening experience of policing, and the social care and mental health issues that our courageous and compassionate police officers face on a daily basis.
The big news story for February was of course the visit by HM King Charles III, to come to Milton Keynes and formally confer city status. Working with the Palace, the Buckinghamshire Lieutenancy and Milton Keynes City Council; we were given a month’s notice to organise the Royal Visit. We decided that we wanted to showcase how incredible Milton Keynes is, and why we were worthy of being granted with City Status last year. After looking at what information had gone into the City Status Bid Document in December 2021, we invited a mixture of community groups, and charities from the following sectors of; social care, education, heritage, culture, leisure, and innovation, as well as religious organisations to present themselves to The King at Christ The Cornerstone church in Central Milton Keynes. The Rolls Royce arrived slightly late, and those of us in the dignitary line up were all slightly nervous. I shouldn’t have worried, as The King very quickly put me
at my ease, and I had the job of escorting and introducing him to all the exhibitors, before accompanying him on to the stage where I said some words of welcome and then invited HM The King to address the assembled guests. I was left in no doubt, after I said goodbye to him at the church door, that His Majesty left with a very positive and uplifting vision of Milton Keynes, and I would bet money that he will be back again to see us.
The other important event was to bestow Newport Pagnell’s own sporting heroine; Leah Williamson with the Freedom of the City for outstanding sporting achievements. Leah came along to a Special Meeting of Milton Keynes City Council, where the councillors agreed to grant her with the honour of Freedom of the City. She is immensely proud of her hometown of Newport Pagnell and of her city, and is a wonderful ambassador for Milton Keynes. Leah captaining the Lionesses to victory at the Women’s Euros last year, and also to the Arnold Clark Cup this year has shown the world how the England Lionesses are a force to be reckoned with especially with the World Cup coming up in the summer.
Finally, I was very proud to present my Mayors Awards at the annual civic reception, which this year was held at The Ballroom at StadiumMK. It was an incredible evening, and it was also a chance for me to be able to thank those people who had made a huge difference to not only my mayoral year, but also to the people of Milton Keynes. It was an extremely well attended event, and raised a wonderful amount of money for my two charities; Medical Detection Dogs and MK SNAP.

Celebrating apprenticeships
It has been a productive and enjoyable time since my last article both in Parliament and in the constituency. I wanted to take this opportunity to update you on some of the things that I have been up to.
Prime Minister Visit To MK
In February, it was a privilege to welcome the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, to Milton Keynes College on Milton Keynes’ 56th birthday. At their Chaffron Way Campus, MK College offer a wide range of excellent apprenticeships giving everyone the same opportunity to a good education and I enjoyed showcasing some of them to the Prime Minister on his visit. I am pleased that the Conservative Government has invested in Milton Keynes College through a variety of channels including the SkillsHub:MK at the Chaffron Centre, the Institute of Technology in Bletchley and offering T-Levels, all of which will help students to go on to have success careers.
National Apprenticeship Week
Also, I was delighted to accompany Richard Holden MP, the Minister for Roads and Local Transport, to John Lewis Magna Park at the start of National Apprenticeship Week. It was a great opportunity to meet some of their apprentices who are working their way to becoming an LGV driver or an engineer. It is brilliant news that 11,540 new apprenticeships have been created in Milton Keynes South since 2010 thanks to successive Conservative governments – as part of the Conservative’s drive to improve skills and productivity in our economy. Each new apprenticeship means another student building the skills and knowledge they need for a long and successful career.
Mental Health Facility Funding
I am pleased that Milton Keynes will be getting a brand new mental health facility as part of the latest investment from the Conservative Government into healthcare in the city. I am passionate about ensuring those who need or want access to mental health services can do so to get the right care and support. That is why I welcome the brilliant news that this Conservative Government will be funding a new health-based ‘place of safety’ suite in Milton Keynes for those suffering a mental health emergency.
Community Diagnostics Centres
Milton Keynes is set to benefit from two Community Diagnostic Centres that will have such a positive impact locally, helping constituents to get seen and receive the necessary medical diagnosis. I am grateful for all the investment that this Conservative Government has put into Milton Keynes’ healthcare provision over the last few years including the new Maple Centre Unit, the mobile cancer screening unit and, as previously mentioned, a brand new mental health facility, and I will continue to lobby for more investment into the city. Once fully operational, the Community Diagnostic Centres at Lloyds Court and Whitehouse Health Centre will deliver an extra 221,214 and 52,550 tests, checks and scans a year respectively.
As always, if I can be of any help to you, please do get in touch with me on the contacted details provided.

Further investment for healthcare in the area
Spring is here and I know April is a very important month for religious groups across Milton Keynes. I want to wish a very happy Easter to everybody in the city, as well as wishing members of the Muslim community a blessed Ramadan, and chag sameach to our Jewish community celebrating Passover.
Continuing To Fight For Healthcare Investment
Fighting for better healthcare funding in Milton Keynes is my priority. And I am delighted we’ve secured a significant amount of investment into health in the city in recent months. From the announcement of the mobile breast cancer screening unit at Milton Keynes University Hospital to funding for a new mental health facility, I’m pleased to see Ministers at the Department for Health & Social Care are listening. I recently met with Health Secretary Steve Barclay to continue lobbying for funding and discussing key issues for local people including GP surgeries and the planned new Women and Children’s Hospital in MK. One project I’m delighted to confirm is that Milton Keynes is set to benefit from two new Community Diagnostic Centres (CDCs) which will carry out potentially life saving tests. One will be based at Lloyds Court in Central Milton Keynes, with the other based at Whitehouse Health Centre, in the Western Expansion Area. This is such important news to help ease the burden on our hospitals and get thousands more people screened, checked and tested each year.
Blind Mum Vs The World
At an event in Parliament last year Google Cloud, the FA and Kelly Cates provided me with an England football shirt signed by members of the men’s team to give to somebody deserving in Milton Keynes. I’m thrilled to announce after some amazing nominations, the winner of the shirt was Hannah Burgess, who you may know from the blog Blind Mum Vs The World Hannah set up her blog during lockdown to celebrate her visual impairment, and she now uses her platform to help and encourage children and parents who also have visual impairments. Hannah has also gone into local schools and preschool settings, to volunteer her time to deliver training and support to staff and students to ensure visually impaired people have everything they need, and the confidence to navigate the every day. It was really inspirational to meet Hannah and I was so pleased to be able to present her with the shirt. You can find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ BlindMumVsTheWorld.x
Reach For The Stars With UK Youth Rocketry Challenge
I want to highlight a fantastic opportunity for young people across Milton Keynes who can take part in the UK Youth Rocketry Challenge. The competition provides 11-18-year-olds with a unique opportunity to work together and put into practice key skills in engineering and physics, inspiring and paving the way for them to become the future engineers and scientists our country needs. The rocketry challenge is a one of a kind and a great hands-on learning opportunity for 11-18-year-olds and a lot of fun. Anyone who is an aspiring astronaut, physicist, engineer, or scientist, should enter this competition to gain invaluable experience. I hope local schools in Milton Keynes take part in the competition, and I look forward to supporting and cheering them on as they reach for the stars. It was brilliant to meet young people who took part in last year’s competition at an event in Parliament recently.
Also this month…
• It was wonderful to be invited to Wolverton Mosque to meet with local members of the Muslim community and hear about the issues that matter to them
• Since the recruitment campaign for 20,000 new police officers across the country began I’m delighted to say our local force Thames Valley Police has now recruited an extra 582 officers

Horror ahead for The Craufurd Arms
We bet that Antarctic Monkeys will look good on the dance floor when they kickstart April at The Craufurd Arms. Not that you’ll find out if you are currently ticketless – the top tribute to Sheffield’s sons is a long time sold out.
The UK’s only Tony Hawk Pro Skater cover band clatters into The Craufurd Arms a week later (April 8), and The 900 will deliver ‘wheelie’ smart covers by artists including The Ramones, Suicidal Tendencies, NOFX and Bad Religion.
We don’t want to whip up false hope, but the man himself has showed up and performed with the band before...
Traditionally, Tuesday nights are neither here nor there, are they? Wargasm (April 11) will change all of that, trust us. The noisy electronic duo – aka Sam Matlock and model Milkie Way – are Kerrang! favourites with quite the online following. Will they play their recent cover of the Girls Aloud number, Something Kinda Ooh? Depends how loud you shout.
The return of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (April 13) is all sold-out, but you can still be stage front for post sludge headbangers ((OHHMS)) (April 14) who begin a brace of shows in Wolverton. The quintet has just issued its fourth long-player, Rot, and will be hitting the road with Coldbones and Mountain Caller in support.
The Canterbury noise makers are promising unadulterated filth and horror fuelled songs. Are you in?
We stay with the horror theme for American horror punk icon Wednesday 13 who will wrap up his Halfway To The Grave tour of the UK at the venue on April 15.
The Duke of Spook promised that these dates, their first on our shores since 2017, will deliver “a full set of your favourite songs from the last 20 years,” including material from the latest album, Horrifier.
Platinum-selling Aussie duo Hockey Dad hail from Wollongong and play Wolverton on April 17, with support from Newcastle’s post-punk quintet, Dust.
Graphic Nature arrives on April 19. They are touring in support of their debut album release, A Mind Waiting To Die. The band is securing its space on some meaty summer festivals too, and has already announced 2000 Trees, Slovenia’s MetalDays, Download Festival and Reading and Leeds dates. Nice work from their agent.
You snooze, you lose when it comes to ticket buying, and that is particularly apt with Sleeper (April 21) – Louise Wener’s mob achieved huge success in the 1990s, and when they reformed six years back it became clear that the appetite for their sounds was still there.
You could join the list for returns, but let’s be honest, it’s not likely that you’ll be hooked up.
Gun will be loaded and acoustic (April 22) when they make their return to the new city. We’ve seen them deliver club dates here decades ago, and were there when they played The National Bowl back in the 1990s.
You might remember hits like Better Days, and their cover of Cameo’s Word Up which was a belter. They did well too, rising to support the Stones on their Steel Wheels / Urban Jungle tour. Reminisce with the old tracks, and soak in some new sounds, because Gun are still delivering fresh produce.
The face is familiar and with good reason; Riding the Low’s frontman is acting ace Paddy Considine, and they are Wolverton bound on April 22.
A band since 2006, their most recent elpee, The Death of Gobshite Rambo was cut loose last year, and the collective says it was the one that finally saw them find their studio groove. Just as well, as they’ve a stash of new material needing to be recorded and will be back in the studio environment later this year to lay down the follow-up, Of The World Form Dead Zones
“We have six albums written, all lined up like movies,” Paddy said, “Each has a different theme, but they all seem to link. Lyrically, Gobshite Rambo spoke a little about my childhood, but Dead Zones speaks about the world at large. Particularly what has been happening in the last couple of years or so.” A new single and EP is being readied too. Good times.
William Crighton headlines on April 23 with support from Proteins of Magic and MK’s own Jasmine Burns opening up the billing – get along early. Also coming before April’s end, Chew (April 25), The Bar Stool Preachers (April 26), Ginger goes acoustic with the music of The Wildhearts (April 28, sold-out) and the semi-final of the Metal 2 The Masses competition will roll on April 30.

Fripping the light fantastic
Toyah Willcox and Robert Fripp will be playing live in The Stables Spiegeltent at this year’s If Milton Keynes International Festival
Both have enjoyed lengthy careers as leaders in their respective packs; Toyah as a solo artist, and Robert as the founder of prog-rockers King Crimson. His other outings include working with artists including Blondie, David Bowie, Peter Gabriel and Talking Heads.
But more recently, they have whipped up the online world with their Sunday Lunch sessions, delivering some of their own material, but largely their takes on other people’s hits; from Motley Crue’s Shout at the Devil to SOAD’s Chop Suey and Metallica’s Enter Sandman
One can only hope that Toyah doesn’t turn her attention to crisping up the roasties fresh from finishing her belting covers – her attire would be ruined by splashes of hot oil!
Their Sunday Lunch sessions have now accumulated more than 77 million views on YouTube, and millions more have viewed on Facebook and TikTok!
The new city date – on Friday, July 28 –will see the partnership breathe fresh life into classic tracks like Rebel Yell, Heroes, Slave To The Rhythm and Are You Gonna Go My Way.

Willen Hospice’s music hub has further expanded its offering, and is now stocking brand new vinyl alongside its pre-loved donated stock.
The new city store – tucked inside the entrance to the iconic Point – has a good selection of re-issued records, so whether you are new to the vinyl buying game and want to introduce some bonafide classics to your collection, or if you had them upon release and lost them (or gave them away), pop to Off The Record and pick up releases like Jackson’s Thriller, Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love and Are You Experienced by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
More reasons to get in a spin while supporting our local charity.
Towersey on the turn(er)
Frank Turner has been announced as a headliner at this year’s Towersey Festival, happening on the Claydon Estate, close to Buckingham.
The English punk and folk singer joins a bill which will also feature fellow headliners The Divine Comedy, The Proclaimers and Nickel Creek over its four days. Other names confirmed to appear include Thea Gilmore, Merry Hell, Urban Folk Quartet, The Shapes and Flook, while local artists on the bill number Solstice, Buckingham Ukulele Group and 3 Sticks
This year’s event is the 59th year of Towersey music, and Joe Heap is the
festival organiser – following in the steps of his grandfather and father before him.
“I’ve been working in the festival for over 25 years and now my sisters, my kids and the wider community are all involved,” Joe said, “But...it’s those that come that truly own this event. Audience, artists, volunteers, concessions. They pass the torch from generation to generation. It’s what they take into the world from Towersey. Community, culture, sharing and learning, growth as human beings that make our legacy so powerful,” he added.

Ugly return for Slowthai
When Northampton’s Slowthai announced his return to The Craufurd Arms, the demand for tickets far exceeded the number available - that was always going to be the case.
Last month’s Wolverton show was part of the Jägermeister Best Night of your Life tour, which saw Slowthai visit six pub venues, giving fans the opportunity to hear tracks from his new album for the first time.
Ugly is Slowthai’s third elpee release, and showcases the rapper’s love for rock, indie and punk, so where better to play than the Wolverton venue?
Slowthai doesn’t need to play grass roots venues nowadays – he’s graduated to bigger things like two-night stays at Brixton Academy. By choosing to return to buzzing small haunts, he’s paying back the early support they gave to him, which demands respect.
“The show was pure adrenaline, excitement and passion,” said Paul Rivers from The Craufurd Arms, as these pictures from Anna Buscaglia demonstrate.
“Watching Slowthai really connect with the next generation of alternative kids was truly
a special moment in live music that you only have the privilege of witnessing a handful of times in your career,” Paul added.
> Ugly is out now through Method/Interscope. Slowthai will play Wembley Stadium this summer as guests of Blur.
Remembering Ace times
Desmond Dekker’s Aces will be among those appearing at this year’s Reggae Land at The Bowl weekender, but the original Aces appeared with Dekker at the first-ever show at The National Bowl in September 1979.
It wasn’t their only visit to the town – Desmond and the Aces played under the Bletchley Youth Centre banner back in 1971.
Dekker passed away in 2006, but his name will
forever be associated with the ska and reggae genres, and for being the writer and performer responsible for one of the earliest reggae smashes, Israelites
Sean Paul, Beanie Man and Barrington Levy are bill toppers at this summer’s event, with more than 80 artists showing across its four stages in all, and an audience of 30,000 is expected to visit The Bowl for the big bash on August 5 & 6.
> Tickets can be booked at reggaeland.co.uk
‘Adrenaline, excitement and passion’ summed up Slowthai’s much-anticipated return to The Craufurd Arms
A moment with Millie
2022 proved a bit of a tasty time for Millie Manders and the Shutup; they toured with Less Than Jake and Ferocious Dog, delivered two headline tours, rocked festivals left, right and centre, and took on Germany for the first time.
So far in 2023, they’ve given fans a new single and chose Valentine’s Day to release the track, Rebound, which is an ode to toxic online dating. Now they are taking to the stage some more, which includes a visit to the new city.
> Millie and Co. will play MK11 on April 14. Get tickets by clicking to milliemanders.com

Kevin Clifton, Strictly ace turned star of the theatre stage, is joined by Faye Brookes in Strictly Ballroom at MK Theatre (April 3-8) .
Baz Luhrmann’s masterpiece follows the arrogant, rebellious young ballroom dancer, Scott Hastings (played by Kevin) who has to dance with beginner Fran when his daring dance style sees him fall out of favour with the Australian Federation.
Together they find the courage to defy tradition and discover that to win, your steps don’t need to be strictly ballroom.
In his day job, Craig Revel Horwood would take exception to that last comment, but when it comes to this touring show, he’s cool with it –Craig has directed and choreographed the work.
Seven Drunken Nights – The Story of The Dubliners (April 9) promises big portions of music and humour if you are up for the craic?!
Alpha’s The Best of the West End has already sizzled at the Royal Albert Hall, and on April 12 it’ll be our turn, when Lucie Jones, Ben Forster, Matt Henry MBE and ‘Wicked’ local lady Louise Dearman will be hitting the right notes.
Ministry of Science LIVE delivers Science Saved The World (April 14).
This family show’s presenters will take an anarchic approach to science communication. Expect loud bangs, 20ft liquid nitrogen clouds, exploding oxygen and hydrogen balloons, fire tornados, hydrogen bottle rockets, ignited methane and a self-built Hovercraft. Obviously.
If the government’s latest antics have left you steaming, you need to find the funny – and Sara Pascoe delivers her Success Story (April 15).
In her time, Sara has auditioned for Barrymore, scared Pete Burns (no mean feat) and ruined Hugh Grant’s birthday. Oh, and she delivered a self-penned sitcom, has hosted The Great British Sewing Bee, a Radio 4 series and is a bonafide author. The girl with the lot.
Jon Richardson’s mind and mine are similarly wired – I don’t mean that I would ever be a threat on 8 Out Of 10 Cats, but when it comes to questions like, ‘Will the recycling be put out on the right day?’ and ‘How many lights are on upstairs when everybody is downstairs?’ I’m with him. He visits the theatre on April 16.
We explored A World Divided in feature form in Pulse last month, but a reminder the local production with a pedigree to match the national shows has its premiere at MK Theatre (April 17).
Producer Christopher Edwards says it best: “It’s the epic storytelling of Les Mis meets the intensity of War of the Worlds with all the fun of Rocky Horror!” he promised.
Step into a land of mystery, magic and adventure on the quest for truth and discovery when Welsh National Opera stages The Magic Flute (April 19-21) and Blaze of Glory! (April 22).
The former is a show for all ages, and a great introduction to opera – it’s an enchanting fairytale with a modern twist and Mozart’s glorious music.
Blaze of Glory! will take you to the 1950s Welsh Valleys’ community, and follows the fortunes of a small group of miners who hit upon the idea of a musical escape to raise spirits following a mining disaster, so how better than to reform their Male Voice Choir?
Last up this month is Wish You Were Dead (April 25-29), starring Giovanna Fletcher, Clive Mantle and George Rainsford.
When Detective Superintendent Roy Grace and Cleo Morey take their first holiday together, they hope for a few days away from their dark worlds of murder and the mortuary.
But with this coming from the pen of bestselling author Peter James, that’s simply not possible. A holiday from hell is about to begin...
Over at The Stables there is comedy from Simon Evans (April 1), Marcus Brigstocke (April 14), The Scummy Mummies (April 20 & 21) and Carl Hutchinson (April 29).
Mark Thompson’s Spectacular Science Show (April 11, 2.30pm) is an interactive, family friendly way to spend the afternoon in Wavendon, exploring the strange and magical properties of matter with exploding elephant’s toothpaste, vortex-generating dustbins and howling jelly babies. Film Reviews

THE LAST WISH
Easily one of the best animated films in years, and not just from Dreamworks, Puss in Boots’ new adventure The Last Wish is a very pleasant surprise. More than a decade since the feline swashbuckler’s first spin-off outing, The Last Wish proves that franchise outings, even this far (far) away from the original Shrek film series, don’t have to be perfunctory distractions for kids.
Puss in Boots is living it up as everyone’s beloved, invincible hero – that is, until his latest daring escapade leaves him on his ninth and last life. After a chilling encounter with a bounty-hunting wolf forces him into hiding (in the most depressing cat shelter, no less), he quests to claim the wish from the dark forest to restore his lost lives – before his competition gets there first.
There’s plenty of familiar elements for fans old and new, not least the modern takes on fairy tale characters like Goldilocks and the Three Bears reimagined
DEMON SLAYER: TO THE SWORDSMITH VILLAGE
Star Rating: 3/5
If you haven’t watched or even heard of Demon Slayer before, watch this anime from the start for its astonishing animation and ongoing saga of Tanjiro and his fellow heroes slaying the demons haunting Taisho-era Japan. Even more than Demon Slayer’s last cinematic outing, To the Swordsmith Village is strictly for fans as it packages the last episodes of the heroes’ glorious battle in the Entertainment District, remastered in glorious 4K, before the story journeys on to the secret village where the demon slayer corps’ swords are made. It barely counts as a film but if you’re already on this journey you’ll be hooked. This franchise is truly a global phenomenon: watch it and you’ll find out why. ✪
MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON
Star Rating: 2/5
The odd title doesn’t lie: Marcel is a sentient shell with shoes on, living in an Airbnb with his ageing grandmother, where a filmmaker documents their lives. The stop-motion animation, how the shells interact with human objects and how it’s all incorporated into a mockumentary handheld filmmaking impresses… at first, anyway. But it’s not surprising to learn that the film was originally a series of short films that’s been stretched to feature-length. The novelty of seeing how the shells live inside and outside the house quickly wears off, with the dry documentary style laying bare a thin story about Marcel longing for his community that left the house without him, while becoming a viral success leads to him appearing on an American talk show. ✪
as a crime family, and Puss himself is once again perfectly voiced by Antonio Banderas. But what’s most surprising is how well rounded the film is. Nearly the whole cast of characters, including the all-new, lovably goofy survivor Perrito, go on meaningful journeys and connections with each other. That’s especially true for Puss as he’s suddenly forced to reckon with his mortality and failing to live up to his legend. Pretty heavy for a kids film? Good thing that this one balances tones very well between the gags and one-liners (funny for all ages though) and the more serious moments, all tied into the theme of learning to live your best life – all in about ninety minutes. The animation style diverges from the usual 3D perfection to include 2D effects and changing framerates during the action, not unlike the great animated Spider-Man film Into the Spider-Verse, creating something both familiar and yet very refreshing to watch. ✪
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA
Star Rating: 1/5
In a couple of months, it’ll be 15 years since the first Iron Man film kick-started the Marvel Cinematic Universe – to look back on the excitement and promise of that film, how it led to the amazing heights of the Avengers films, then compare it to this film or indeed almost any recent MCU instalment? Disappointing is an understatement. Paul Rudd returns as Ant-Man along with Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer, but the sad truth is these MCU films have long since blended into awfully similar experiences, like eating lukewarm fast food each time. Instead of quantum mania, we get predictable mediocrity, grating main characters, barely coherent action scenes, utterly contrived plot beats and terribly mismanaged tone just to cram in yet more flat deadpan “humour”. ✪
COCAINE BEAR
Star Rating: 1/5
There’s no highs with Cocaine Bear, only lows. Loosely based on a true story in 1980s America, a bear accidentally ingests wads of smuggled cocaine and promptly goes berserk. Somehow this film manages to have no fun whatsoever with that premise. Oh, the grisly CGI bear mauls lots of people but it’s nowhere near wellscripted or executed well enough to be the rip-roaring comedy it clearly wants to be, while also being way too silly to ever be actually horrific. The kills, the bloody gore and gags are cheap and lacking invention and it’s not like there’s human element to compensate either. It’s also inadvertently morbid that this posthumously stars Ray Liotta and it shows him getting torn apart before a dedication message appears at the end credits. ✪

FILM
OF THE MONTH - Star Rating: 4.5/5
Cate Blanchett in the movie “Tár.”(Focus Features)
The MX-5 is coming along at a gallop
FACTS AT A GLANCE
Top Speed: 136 MPH
Performance: 0-60 in 6.3 secs
Power: 181 BHP
ADAM TUDOR-LANE
reviews the Mazda MX-5
If one thing always crops up regarding criticism and the Mazda MX-5, it’s power. ‘Oh, if only it had another 20 or 30 more horses’, I’ve been guilty of it myself. But finally, power has been bumped to 181 BHP, up from 157 of a few years ago.
Prices start from £30,350 with the 2.0-litre engine as it’s only available from ‘Exclusive-line’ trim upwards.
The 1.5 litre starts at £25,800; you can also opt for the RF if you’d prefer a more solid roof above you.
While the MX-5 is still the sweetest handling roadster on the market, as previously mentioned, it always felt like it needed more power to really come alive.
That high revving 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engine is the perfect match for some spirited back road driving, especially due to the slick short-throw six-speed gearbox.
Gearing feels a little longer thanks to the extra horses, the torque delivery continues to the red line, and the sound throws you back to cars of yesteryear. 0-60 MPH has dropped by 0.8 of a second thanks to an increase in revs, topping out at 7,500 instead of 6,500 in the old 2.0 litre. Now you’re looking at a 60 sprint in 6.3 seconds, and it feels every bit as quick as that. While the Abarth Spider nailed it in terms of exhaust note, that’s still something I think Mazda could improve on. An active flap wouldn’t go a miss, especially on a car costing £30k+.
The 2.0 litre benefits from a limited-slip differential, which helps fire you out of corners and effectively deploy all those horses.
Economy: 40.9 MPG (claimed)
Switch off the traction control, and the MX-5 will teach you all you need to know about car control. Exclusive-line and above also gain a front strut brace and Bilstein dampers all around. The differences are subtle when driving the 1.5 and 2.0 litre back to back, but the 2.0 litre feels like the slightly stiffer, more driver-focussed MX.
Inside hasn’t changed all that much. The new Light Stone Nappa leather on the range-topping Homura trim is light grey in appearance. It’s utterly gorgeous and really finishes off the inside of the Mazda nicely, lifting the interior from being quite a small dark place to something a lot more premium in feel.
The Bose system comprises nine speakers; again, it’s a worthy upgrade over the standard stereo, with clear, crisp vocals while giving enough of a bass kick without a sub as you can expect.
It may be seven years old, but the MX-5 still concocts the perfect driver’s car, it has all the right ingredients, and that stronger core finally gives it the extra ‘oomph’ it’s always deserved. On the other hand, if you want a nice convertible to potter around in, the 1.5 is ideal; its softer ride is equally delightful for the right driver. When driven on the limit, it can also be a hoot without feeling ‘kill yourself quick’.

Grandma
Ah, grandma, where would we be without it? It?
Sorry, grammar. Grammar, grammar, grammar! I must get my smell-checker working butter.
Back to the important things in life. Consider the following question: What do you like? If you answer: I like eating grandma and watching television, then you may either have missed a very important comma from your reply or are a crime waiting to happen.
Sure, grammar can be seen as a hindrance, such as when trying to rapidly send someone a text message advising that you will be late, dead or both… However, the subtleties can clarify meaning or add a context that isn’t apparent upon casual reading.
It can be the same when considering the totality of sentences. Here’s an example of it from a classroom of English language students of a very Catholic country. On the board the question: Should a man be allowed more than one wife? was written, with answers and comments in English being invited. Unanimously the class response was, No!
Then the teacher added the words, at a time. He asked whether the class now had a different opinion regarding the original words. What if the man from the first form of the question had become a widower?
Suddenly it was not so clearcut. The emphatic no was now firmly applied to the completed question while the previous, truncated version now had all sorts of discussion taking place. The teacher was happy because, with a little prodding, he had
everyone seeking to offer their views, in English.
We meet every week on a Thursday evening, at seven o’clock.
The following Thursday, the hapless teacher turns up at the advised time and is greeted by an empty meeting room. Enquiry revealed that the words, except next Thursday, were omitted. It is possible that the speaker merely stopped talking once the teacher had nodded and indicated their understanding. Whatever the reason, a trip across town on a rainy evening could have been avoided with the addition of that simple three-word clause.
Rightly or wrongly, grammar can suggest things about the speaker.
I is not happy with what you is doing.
A simple substitution of am and are with is and a prejudice begins to form in the head of the listener.
Oh, you think you are better than what I am?
What? Now the listener is convinced. However, what if the sentences were delivered with perfect grammar by an otherwise drug-addled junkie who hadn’t seen the need to wash for years?
Things I like at the coast? White horses wearing swimming trunks and waterproof sunscreen. There’s that missing comma again, and this time it changes the white horses from the foamy crests of waves to those of the equine variety. Worse, it isn’t something a spell-chequer will correct.
Fast! My own spelt-chucker is useless. Soggy.
In my head I am seeing a little old lady with a shock of white hair, effortlessly lifting a lorry above her head – such is the power of grandma.

Your stars
Flavour of the Times - Spring, which begins with the equinox (equal day and night) on 19th March, provides the impetus for the season moving significantly forward at this time of year. Astrologically, a lot is on the move too. Several big planets are changing signs which introduces a huge element of the unknown into the flavour of our lives. Pluto has shifted into Aquarius which heralds massive changes spread over the next 20 years but this month other planets are in Aries giving a lot of energy to the month. Mars shifts into Cancer which makes emotional anger something to contend with.
ARIES
March 21 – April 20
Even with your levels of positive fiery spring energy, March may sometimes feel too much to handle. The full moon may give you a chance to stand back, breathe and consider for a moment (if you’re wise). More hard-to-handle energies may be released by the new moon that follows on 20th (Hitler’s birthday, I notice!) as things come down to earth in Taurus (not necessarily good at all)
TAURUS
April 21 – May 21
Are you standing in the way of a tsunami heading your way? Can you resist it? Maybe because the Taurus bull is one stubborn strong beast, but you may still be overwhelmed by the power of the waves coming at you. If you weather the storm, the new moon on 20th will be welcome because you can now get some of this under control. Hang on in there!
GEMINI
May 22 – June 21
Venus enters your sign on 11th of the month and immediately pings against Pluto who has just arrived in Aquarius. Conversations may be flirtatious and fun at first but don’t be surprised if some of them take a darker turn and get into some deep territory that you may feel reluctant to enter. There’s lot of positivity around but beware of folk with sensitivities who you may upset by mistake.
CANCER
June 22 – July 23
Domestic violence and misogyny are likely to be a theme this month as Mars enters Cancer. There may be people in your life who are vulnerable who need more looking after than usual. But be aware that some of them may not necessarily respond all that well to your caring nature. This may come out as hurt anger.
LEO
July 24 – August 23
You might be getting early hints of some fundamental changes that are starting to be made in your world, things that you have never really considered before. Over the next few years, you will be led away from some of the selfindulgence that you may have enjoyed, perhaps towards a more humanitarian approach to life. Service to others rather than to yourself?
VIRGO
August 24 – September 23
Following the rather directionless Pisces energy of recent weeks, you are probably being thrown into action now and dragged along with events taking place around you, slightly against your will. You will find it hard to maintain the sense of order but after the new moon in Taurus on 20th, things come back down to earth, and you can get space to do some planning again.
LIBRA
September 24 – October 23
You may be trying to hold people back for most of this month. Many of them are feeling a bit hyped up and headstrong without considering the down sides of their actions. If some of them just aren’t listening to your advice, you should probably leave them to their own devices, even though you know you may end up picking up the pieces later.
SCORPIO
October 24 – November 22
It will be crazy at the start of April, but you are going to feel the energy that kicks in after 20th at the new moon in Taurus. Lots of planets are also queueing up in that sign which may feel. Your health and daily routines may be a strong focus for you now but maybe you already know deep inside what needs to change and when. Consequences next month!
You are bound to be affected personally by some if not all of the massive changes that are taking place this year. An astrological reading of your chart can forewarn you about how these changes might affect you. To really understand what they mean for you on a personal level during 2023, I would recommend that you consider booking a comprehensive personal astrological consultation with me. This is completely specific to you and your life. This will illuminate many things that you may not have considered up to now and it will enable you to really take advantage of the positive energies and avoid the negative ones throughout the year.
SAGITTARIUS
November 23 – December 22
Things may get overblown this month. Your ruling planet, Jupiter is pulling everything else in its wake at speed and at times the energy is going to get a little crazy. It’s exciting and while it’s fine to feel optimistic and energised, don’t forget where the brake pedal is as you accelerate because there are slower vehicles ahead of you!
CAPRICORN
December 23 – January 20
Pluto’s time in Capricorn is done now and we are entering a new era which will require a radical reappraisal of where things stand. Still, the Pluto in Aquarius tsunami is slow even if its relentless, so no quick decisions are necessary yet. Perhaps the focus should start on your home base. It’s a good idea to get this in order before venturing out.
AQUARIUS
January 21 – February 19
You will be in pole position for the change to Pluto in Aquarius, but will you be ready for it? Big opportunities will be presenting themselves between now and June this year. Radical, humanitarian and community matters will all be coming into focus and influencing us for as much as 20 years from now. It may not be quite the Age of Aquarius yet, but it may feel like it for you!
PISCES
February 20 – March 20
This month will feel a bit harsh and aggressive and folk around you will be getting caught up in the crazy power of the spring Aries energy thrusting forwards. This characterises the first half of the month but there will be some fallout when things inevitably come back down to earth as the new moon occurs in Taurus. This is whole new ball game and should settle your nerves.
