With our 50th year on the horizon, this article provides me with the perfect opportunity to reflect on some of the outcomes and successes for the children of our school.
Success is measured in many ways, but for me, the most important elements are how much the children achieve while here and how happy they are doing this.
It is safe to say that the children I see each day are happy, fun-loving individuals with a real passion for coming to school. Our children here are respectful, polite, caring, and kind, while still having a sense of purpose throughout their day. From this essential starting point, they go on to achieve great things.
A lot of this success can certainly be attributed to our dedicated and inspiring teaching staff. The children start to receive specialist subject teaching from as young as 3, and by the time they are 7, every subject from Art to Music to Maths to Engineering and Design is taught by a specialist. Alongside these knowledgeable, enthusiastic staff, the school has wonderful
subject-specific classrooms that enhance a child’s joy of learning. This enables every child to flourish and find strength and focus in their school day.
This year alone, our Year 6 leavers have broken all records for senior school exam successes, with 36 children reaching the required standard for the 11 Plus Grammar Transfer Test and then gaining places at Sir Henry Floyd, Royal Latin, Aylesbury High,
and Aylesbury Grammar Schools.
Furthermore, the children also achieved 54 exam passes and offers into a wide variety of selective independent schools, including Bedford Modern, Northampton High, Bedford School, and Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys School. This success also included several children achieving scholarships in art, music, sport, and academics.
When the children leave us at the end of Year 6, they are ready for all that life in Senior School may throw at them. They are confident, articulate, and respectful—and ready to lead the way.

Acharity fashion show hosted by Olney’s fashion retailers has raised over £6,000 for Willen Hospice. Guests enjoyed an evening filled with style and glamour, featuring the latest collections from the town’s fashion boutiques. Willen Hospice’s own shop also took centre stage, showcasing a selection of pre-loved occasionwear from its upstairs boutique in the town.
The event was organised by Jane Sumner, from Noa Noa, and Marihelen Esam, a trustee at Willen Hospice (pictured above).
And, said Jane, the event highlights a major reason why the independent traders in Olney continue to thrive. “If you are looking for a generic brand, Milton Keynes is the place to head for but if you
want something more individual, then you’d better come to a place like Olney.
“The brands will not be here and you will find something different, unique.”
Olney boasts seven independent fashion retailers, as well as eateries, bars and businesses. The idea of the fashion show was to showcase the range and difference of the outfits available in Olney.
“There is such a variety,” said Jane. “Everything is here – you just need to be pointed in the right direction. You can get most things you need here and you would have to travel miles before you come across another town like Olney.”
Willen Hospice chief executive Kate Broadhurst was among the guests at the fashion show, held at the town’s Carlton Club. “We are incredibly grateful to our community in Olney for their unwavering support,” she said. “The funds raised will go a long way in helping us continue our vital work in providing compassionate, palliative care to those who need it most.”
The evening concluded with a heartfelt thank-you to all participants, including the models, retailers, sponsors and volunteers who made the event possible. Their combined efforts ensured that the fashion show was not only a memorable experience but also a meaningful contribution to a worthy cause, said Jane.
It was one of a series of events that take place every year in Olney. The most famous, of course, is the Pancake Race, which draws attention from all over the world on Shrove Tuesday. But Olney also welcomes hundreds of visitors for its Cherry fair in the spring, raft
racing and the Duck Race the River Great Ouse during the summer and the Big Olney Food Festival in Market Place every autumn.
The town also hosts its annual fireworks display and the spectacular Dickens of a Christmas.
However, there is something for everyone every day of the year in Olney. It remains a vibrant, busy and buzzy town but is also a place full of history and visitors will make a beeline for the Cowper & Newton Museum.
In many ways, it is the town’s star attraction, celebrating the literary heritage of two men and the place where the hymn Amazing Grace was written.
Cowper and Newton lived in Olney and the museum tells the story of their friendship, documenting their lives in the town.
The museum showcases the life and work of the 18th-century poet and letter writer William Cowper, and his friend John Newton who wrote Amazing Grace.

and a spiritual mentor to slavery abolitionist William Wilberforce. The museum has a display showing the slave trade and the part Newton played in its abolition and has many belongings of the men which show how they lived, worked and about how their fame spread.
The museum also recalls, through a fascinating array of documents, objects and pictures, how Olney has evolved over the centuries - particularly its past as a centre for lace-making and the boot and shoe industry.

The gardens are delightful place to explore too: well tended, with a lovely 18th-century summerhouse.
It is just another reason to spend some quality time in Olney.

Imagine if you could hop in the car and time travel back to the Victorian era. Well, for one weekend this June, you can do the next best thing!
The return of Milton Keynes Museum's Victorian Weekend, on June 8 & 9, is another opportunity to roll back the years and engage with the brilliant Ragged Victorians, a passionate group of reenactors who will show you what life was really like during the reign of Queen Victoria, writes Sammy Jones. They are always a smash-hit with all ages, and they span the generations too, with 35 adults and close to a dozen children who take part, and the Museum will be joined by some of these characters who truly bring history to life.
“The youngest reenactor is currently being brewed and the oldest is 72,” smiles group organiser Lenny, who knows better than anyone what makes them such a success. She founded the group with her husband, Lee and their two children.
“We drift in and out of character, hooking people in with a bit of banter, and then, depending on their interest we flitter between
discussing our character's knowledge of life, and the many changes that were happening in the country impacting the common man,” Lenny explains, “There were some huge changes afoot in the early Victorian period that impacted and shaped the lives of the general public and we try to reflect this using our characters as an example of what was happening to the many people finding themselves in similar circumstances,” she added.
Members of the group have been visiting the Museum to colour up its Victorian Weekend since 2017, pausing for the pandemic, of course.
We didn't think it possible to be charmed by a lady collecting canine faecal matter, but we most certainly were when we met Mama Wag last year!
As a youngster, she relocated to London with her husband in search of a better life, but as time progressed, their family expanded; they produced 10 children, and with so many bellies to feed, riches eluded them.
Her husband had long since disappeared, and when we met her on our time-travelling journey she was living with her daughter, and her grandchildren.
She had a basket of dog poo on display and told us that she is known as a 'pure finder' scouring the streets looking for the waste products of pooches to sell to tanneries.
The poop was used to soften leather pieces and if you worked hard, you could make a nice living gathering up the messes.
Mama Wag survived in the slums of the capital by helping others in need, and by being a woman in the know – dealing in information to keep one step ahead of the law!
Today, the role of a 'pure finder' is obsolete, of course, but it really wasn't so long ago that finding dog mess was a reason to celebrate!
Mama Wag's daughter Kitty was the eldest of the children. As a youngster she dreamed of becoming a doctor, but that could only ever be a fantasy – women couldn't be doctors in Victorian England. Perish the thought!
Instead, while her husband went to seek a fortune in Australia, Kitty helped her fellow childbearing women and the little mites, having absorbed all the information she could from travelling healers.

Museum visitors will also make the acquaintance of Jack Hood, who once worked manual jobs in the Bull Ring market, but before reaching the end of his teens, decided he wanted more from life.
Increasingly, he spent time in gambling establishments before sliding into the criminal underworld of Birmingham, where he joined a gang of pick-pockets, but during a prize fight a violent scuffle with a rival gang saw Jack fatally wound one of his rivals.
He then moved into 'coining', making fake crowns, half crowns and shillings, but he swapped the high risks associated with that –and with a pocketful of forged coins, or a piece of jewellery to sell on, he did enough to get by.

Punch and Judy will get physical with a decidedly interactive show guaranteed to entertain. There may also be a flea circus!
Musical entertainment will be provided by the Wolverton Town Band who will take up residence in the Bandstand, while in the barn courtyard, Morris Dancers will be jingle-jangling!
If you fancy it, take the opportunity to get hands-on with a Victorian Laundry session using dolly tubs and a mangle to clean those blouses and shirts. Experience this, and you'll never grumble about your washer-drier again!
The Victorian School Room will be delivering timed lessons through the day – misbehave at your peril.
A Cabinet of Curiosities will include taxidermy animals and all sorts of unusual items to spark imaginations.
Feeling peckish? You can grab a bite to eat in the Granary Tea Room, of course, but during the Victorian Weekend you will also be able to help volunteers cooking Welsh Cakes on the range over in the Museum cottage.

Forget those period dramas showing an altogether more glamorous existence in the 19th century. While riches were certainly the calling of the few, life in Victorian England for the majority was tough, and this awardwinning living history group perfectly portrays those difficult times.

Organisers of Classic Stony are gearing up for their biggest ever event to mark its 15th birthday. Sammy Jones belted up and discovered more about the journey so far...
Classic car fans will be driven crazy with 100s of examples parked up for inspection at the event which unites the community and makes for a fabulous, free day out.
Described as ‘a festival of all things motoring,’ Classic Stony will get everyone revved up on June 2, consuming the whole of the picturesque old town with some wheelie terrific cars and bikes.
“It is a relaxed, informal free day out for the family and car and bike fans, run by enthusiasts for enthusiasts,” said event spokesman Adrian Cole, “There is always something quirky and interesting to see – from a Henry Ford Model T from the roaring 20s to a time travelling replica of the DeLorean car from Back to the Future, which isn’t quite an official ‘classic’ but is great fun and always proves popular.”
The event – a sister to the annual New Year’s Day Vintage Stony show which attracts more than 400 cars and bikes – will be inviting visitors to look to the sky this time too.
“We are mindful that within a week of our event the nation will be coming together to remember the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings so we have asked the Lancaster Bomber from WW2 memorial fleet to fly over the festival as a small contribution towards recognising the importance of the landings to the country,” Adrian said.
Classic Stony was founded by Stony Stratford Business Association members Ray Cobley and Andrew Freestone, themselves keen car and bike enthusiasts and –pandemic aside – it has been a staple event ever since.
Sadly, Andrew passed away a few years ago but his invaluable contribution to the event is remembered with the Best in Show trophy named in his honour. Today, the committee of volunteers is headed by event chair David Storer, and the numbers of visitors and participants keeps on rising.
The event also steers the economy too, with local businesses opening their doors to hungry and thirsty visitors. Whether you want to do a spot of shopping, grab a lunch or have a swift half, you’ll have plenty of choices.
Classic Stony happens as part of the established Stony Live Week of entertainment in the town, and the Market Square stage will deliver live music across the day.
“Stony Stratford is a great place to have a coffee, or something a bit stronger, and a bite to eat, so you can spend the day with us, enjoying all that the event and the town has to offer.
Attending doesn’t incur an entry fee, but everyone is invited to dig deep for loose change and those crinkly bits of paper for charity.
“Thanks to our sponsors and the general public, to date Classic Stony has raised more than £100,000 for Willen Hospice, and we look forward to adding to that figure this year,” Adrian added.
“We can promise you a fun, relaxed time and the chance to enjoy some amazing cars, bikes and military vehicles and you can speak to their owners. A Milton Keynes charity is empowering care leavers to take control of their future through food.
Auntie’s Cookery Academy, a newly established charity dedicated to empowering care experienced young people through culinary education, celebrated its official launch on Thursday, May 9th, 2024, at Milton Keynes Cookery School. The event, attended by esteemed guests including the Mayor of Milton Keynes Mick Legg, Councillor Emily Darlington, High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire Kurshida Mirza, Councillor Shazna Muzammil, local entrepreneurs, representatives from MKFM, MKCTV, Learn Plus Us, and many more, marked the beginning of a transformative journey for the organisation.
Auntie’s Cookery Academy aims to help bridge the gap between being fully supported, and being expected to live independently.
Their approach empowers young people, aged 16 to 24, by equipping them with the vital life skills and employability training they need. Alongside Learn Plus Us, they’ve developed a curriculum for learners to achieve an award - certified by the NCFE - by completing a 12-week course which covers not only key cookery skills, but budgeting and batch cooking, using leftovers, recycling and waste, as well as health and hygiene.
And their commitment doesn’t stop there. The charity places them right at the core of a genuine social enterprise – with the chance to earn a wage on the ‘Food Truck’, gaining work experience to take into hospitality and catering if they choose.
Guests were treated to a delightful evening filled with drinks from the recently renovated yellow horse box donation bar and
mouth-watering dishes, including delicious Thai green curry and the opportunity to make their own spring rolls in the cookery school.
Belle Lawrence, Chair of Auntie’s Cookery Academy, delivered a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support and outlining the charity’s mission to support young individuals with care experience through culinary education to unlock their potential. Lawrence emphasised the importance of community involvement in achieving the charity’s goals and invited attendees to contribute to the cause.
The launch event also featured a raffle, with prizes generously donated by Frosts Garden Centre, Wooden Hill Coffee, Maya Restaurant, Frost Family Van Hire, Auntie Em’s Kitchen, MK Cookery School, Popworld, MKFM, and Fabbi Abbi.
On a delightfully warm and sunny evening, guests gathered in the decorated courtyard to learn more about Auntie’s Cookery Academy’s aims and explore opportunities for the Milton Keynes community to support the cause. The charity aims to raise £5,000 to kickstart its initiatives and is seeking longterm partners to help reach its £10,000 goal to deliver the course to the first cohort.

Nourishing Amy and Gina Burgess celebrate the start of the European Picota cherry season with this delicious vegan recipe that showcases the naturally stalkless fruit.
For the Cherry Chia Jam:
200g pitted Picota Cherries (approx. 250g whole cherries)
2 tbsp maple syrup
2 tbsp white chia seeds
For the cookie dough cups:
50g oat flour
60g ground almonds
30g vegan vanilla protein powder
3 tbsp melted coconut oil
3 tbsp runny, smooth almond butter
2 tbsp maple syrup
Pinch of salt
40g dark chocolate chips
For the Frangipane:
2 tbsp (30g) runny, smooth almond butter
1½ tbsp maple syrup
1 tbsp melted coconut oil
30g ground almonds
For Serving:
6 tsp whipped coconut cream or thick coconut yoghurt
6 Picota Cherries, whole 1 tbsp flaked almonds, crushed
Time: 20 minutes plus 1-2 hours chilling Makes: 8
1. Start by making the jam: add the pitted cherries to a saucepan along with the maple syrup and bring to a boil. Allow to summer and bubble over a high heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally and mashing the cherries with the spoon, until juicy and sticky. Stir in the chia seeds, remove from the heat and allow to cool down. Once cool, blend up to a smoother jam. Store in the fridge for 1 week in a sealed jar, until needed.
2. Line 8 muffin holes in a tray with paper cases.
3. For the cookie dough: stir together the oat flour, ground almonds, protein powder, coconut oil, almond butter, syrup and salt to a sticky mix. Now fold in the chocolate chips and divide into 8 equal pieces (about 40g each). Press each one into a muffin case and make a cup shape. I like to press a shot glass (or similar) into the centre of each cookie dough ball to do this. Chill in the fridge while you make the fillings.
4. For the frangipane: stir together the ingredients until sticky. Remove the cups from the fridge and spoon in some of the frangipane and top with some of the cherry jam (you will have extras). Allow to rest in the fridge for1 bour, until they have firmed up.
5. To serve: remove from the fridge and pipe on some coconut yoghurt and top with a Picota Cherry and some flaked almonds.
6. Eat straight away or keep in a sealed container in the fridge for 1 week or in the freezer for 1 month. Allow to defrost before eating.

June might be the hottest month, and watering the plants will be a priority. Feeding productive plants is most important. Read the instructions carefully, pour the concentrate into the watering can then add water from the butt or tap. Stir the mix when the can is full. Water the compost slowly, until it is damp, rather than watering quickly and letting the water run out of the pot into the base.
Damping down the floor of the greenhouse is a must, and good ventilation must be practised as well.
Awell-kept lawn is the motivation for many any hour spent eliminating weeds and walking that mower up and down.
So it can be devastating to watch your green space developing patches of yellowish brown before dying. It makes for a nasty sight, and if you lift the devastated turf you will find the cause of the issue; leatherjackets living – and munching – in the surface layers of the soil. Wormlike in appearance, they are easy to distinguish; with greyish brown bodies which can be up to 30mm in length.
Leatherjackets are the larvae of craneflies. Most get their kicks from algae and organic matter, but some feed on living plants, and those are the ones that could cause you problems.
Veggie plots can also suffer, and larvae numbers can be swelled after a damp autumn.
The problem with leatherjackets is often one that accompanies new build properties.
If you believe your garden has a problem with the larvae, covering the lawn overnight with plastic sheeting will encourage the leatherjackets to rise to the surface. Remove the sheeting in the morning and the birds will have an easy feast, but of course, while being helpful, birds can sometimes make for even more destruction.
Running around with pesticides and nasties isn’t an option. You can remove by hand which will be laborious, but if done regularly will help to control numbers, but introducing nematodes is the smart option.
Why? Because these grey wrigglies are fussy eaters with a penchant for fresh, new turf, and young lawns have particularly sweet, tender roots.
They like their greens – or rather, they like our greens!
So, you know what they are, but how do you eliminate them?
That’s the trickier part. The local feathered population will stick their beaks in, quite literally!
Birds love munching on the jackets, and if your garden is suddenly a haven for crows, magpies and starlings nibbling around the lawn, that’s a good indication you may have an issue.
Nematodes will devastate leatherjackets but won’t harm pets, children, birds or other wildlife.
What is a nematode? In short, they are microscopic worms that enter the grubs, infecting them with a bacterial disease that causes their demise.
The nematodes are invisible to the naked eye, and purchased in powder form which needs to be mixed with water to activate.
When a leatherjacket has been destroyed, the nematodes multiply and head back out to search for more victims. It’s like a real life horror story playing out beneath the soil!
Once an infestation has been dealt with (which will take time), you need to turn all attention to supporting your grass in its recovery – feeding the roots and keeping the grass cut short is perfect. Unfortunately, if it pulls up easily at the roots, you will need to reseed.
To give your grass the best chance of recovery, always act quickly – because infestations are no larvae-ing matter.
The tomato plants are doing well in the growing bag, supported by canes, as are those in large pots and in a raised bed. Side shoots have been removed where necessary and all have been fed with a high-potash liquid fertiliser.
Potatoes in large pots are all growing vigorously and have been gradually filled up with soil.
The celery plants, growing in modules, will be planted out. We will try to grow them properly in a trench, 20 cm (8”) deep and 30cm (12”) apart in two rows, gradually earthing them up to blanch the stems.
The larger sweetcorn seedlings may also be planted now, not in rows but squares or blocks to enable the wind to pollinate them whatever the direction (of the wind).
It will soon be the longest day. Let us make the most of it!

Councillor Marie Bradburn, the new Mayor of Milton Keynes for 2024-2025 tells us a little about herself and outlines her themes of education, young people and active transport for her mayoral year.
My Mayoral Year began with the Annual Council Meeting at the Civic Offices earlier this month, the room was filled with family, friends, council colleagues and not to mention family watching at home from across the water in Ireland, it truly was a very special evening and one I will never forget.
Having lived in Milton Keynes for almost 30 years, I have seen just how much our city has grown and flourished. I am immensely proud of the diversity and rich culture we hold in Milton Keynes, and I am looking forward to working with everyone on the city’s journey as it goes from strength to strength.
For those that don’t know, I come from the west of Ireland from a little village called Kilglass, although I have lived in my ward of Bradwell since 1997. I have been married for 40 years to my husband Robin, I have a son, a daughter, and five wonderful grandchildren.
I have served the residents of Bradwell since 2016 and since have learnt so much, my biggest regret is that I didn’t do it 20 years ago!
I’m pleased to be supporting Sieve MK Gateway, a charity that is dedicated to addressing educational underachievement among young people, particularly BAME students.
My themes for the year are education, young people, and active transport. Throughout my time on the City Council, I have had the privilege of chairing the Corporate Parenting Panel which has held a special place in my heart. When people ask me how many children I have I always respond with 2 biologically, but also the almost 400 children in care, that we as the City Council are the legal corporate parent to. During my term as Mayor, I will be championing fostering recruitment to guarantee a good and loving home for our children in care. Just as we aspire for our biological children it’s equally essential and
our responsibility to aspire for our children in care to guide them into the future, into adulthood, independent living, and beyond.
Earlier this month, I launched the Mayor’s Year of Cycling and over the course of the year I will be attending as many events as possible by cycling or walking. I hope that this will encourage more residents to travel sustainably across the city and ensure we are well on our way to becoming a cleaner, greener, and healthier city.
Traditionally, the Mayor’s consort is a family member but given my chosen themes I am delighted to announce that two young people in care will be accompanying me to events this year.
Finally, a mention to the charity I will be supporting this year. I’m pleased to be supporting Sieve MK Gateway, a charity that is dedicated to addressing educational underachievement among young people,
particularly BAME students. The charity offers tutoring services and mentoring programmes to young people across the city which helps them to realise their full potential.
I have personally had the honour of working with the team in the past and I have seen the vital work they do and how they transform young people’s lives.
The charity, which started in a small room in Neath Hill with a handful of young people is now located within The Point in the city and is now raising funds to build a new learning and enterprise centre.

On Saturday 23rd June, Milton Keynes City Council is holding the city’s first ever, family-friendly Midsummer Festival. Everyone is invited to celebrate the summer solstice with a fun-packed free programme of music, maypoles, magic and more. Midsummer Boulevard is famously aligned with the path of the sun at summer solstice, which in traditional folklore is celebrated on the night of 23 June.
From 10am to 10.30pm, Midsummer Boulevard East will be transformed into Festival central for a free event inspired by traditional midsummer themes of renewal, healing, and health. There will be a wide range of music, street theatre, and folklore-inspired art taking place alongside free making workshops. Pop-up street food curated by local blogger Sophie etc will be available throughout the day and into the evening, with the event ending with a parade to the Light Pyramid in Campbell Park.

Midsummer Boulevard East will be closed to traffic to allow festival goers and event production teams to use the site safely. Road closure signs will be in place to redirect motorists, and buses that usually drop off and pick up on Midsummer Boulevard East will instead do so outside The Point on Lower Tenth Street. It looks to be a great free event for the whole city.

MK City Council is working with a theatre company on an innovative way to help local people share their experiences about living in Milton Keynes. The creative partnership between the city council, theatre company Speak Up! Act Out! and public health experts Ben Caves Associates is part of the development of the MK City Plan 2050, which is an important planning document that will be submitted to the Secretary of State next year.
Each local authority has a ‘local plan’ for their area, to help guide how future development can support the needs of citizens and businesses. One of the topics to be considered is how future changes can have an impact on the health of residents and communities. The city council has been asking local people for their feedback to help shape the Plan, and more than 2,000 have so far had their say through online surveys and face to face events.
Creative workshops run by Speak Up! Act Out! are being planned for June. They’ll be a mixture of practical activities and discussions where local people can share stories and their experiences of life in Milton Keynes, with a focus on their health and wellbeing. Coming together to create a final presentation of the feedback in September which may be in the form of a film, illustrations or even an exhibition – people participating in the workshops will decide.

The MK City Plan 2050 will take forward Milton Keynes City Council’s Strategy for 2050 which set out a bold and ambitious vision for MK over the next 28 years, including equal opportunities for all, ‘lifelong’ homes that suit people at all stages of their life, and a pioneering mass rapid transit system.
A first draft will be published in July for comments. Once approved by the Secretary of State, it will take over from the city council’s award-winning previous local plan.

Her debut single has been viewed millions of times on TikTok, Meghan Trainor called on her talent for a collaboration, and she has stage-shared with P!nk. Not bad for a girl who was the target of cruel bullies and told she would never amount to anything. As she prepares to play for the home crowd with a summer festival billing, Pulse’s Sammy Jones checks in with Kettering’s sizzling hot pop success, Mae Stephens.
The past 18 months have been a blur of bonkers experiences for Mae who left her role in a local supermarket at the start of last year, and before the summer was out, was stage sharing with P!nk.
Oh, and let’s not forget a Glastonbury appearance, that single collaboration with Meghan Trainor and the track that started it all, If We Ever Broke Up
It was the second most popular song on TikTok globally in 2023 with millions of views. And counting.
“Even now, I’m wondering where in the universe they decided to give me this opportunity,” she says, although it feels a little bit like a question, “I will always be so thankful to be able to pursue something I’d dreamed about since I was a little girl. I feel very lucky...”
On paper, Mae has it all going on, but the colourful, confident girl who strutted her very unique style on the red carpet at this year’s Brit Awards has had more than her fair share of difficult times to deal with.
If school was a jigsaw, she was the bit that didn’t fit, and her learning days were miserable.
“I had a crappy time, kids can be horrible and being the weird kid meant immediate social outcast. I didn’t really have many friends and was floating between friendship groups,” she says.
“If you weren’t wearing the same thing as every other girl, or you didn’t have that River Island bag, or that specific lipgloss you weren’t even remotely relevant,” she recalled, “I had my shoes filled with water, my hair cut, my bag nicked, stuff nicked out of my bag, toilet doors kicked down on me... it was a difficult time.
“I was brought up in a family that believed in proper values; in kindness, respect and sharing. To other kids being nice was a sign of weakness.
“You had to be mean to get anywhere and so I found myself in this situation of not
being able to hold a friend group because I was too weird, or too loud, or too extravagant to fit in. I never really had a solid group of friends until I went to college.”
There are specific memories that stand out against the backdrop of daily difficulties. Being at school on her birthday is one of them.
“I spent the whole day being berated and belittled. I went home, cried and then wrote a good couple of songs and it made me feel immediately better. It was therapy.
“Every time I came home from school my mum would say, ‘You’ve got a year left, you’ve got six months left, you’ve got three months left...’
“The only reason I had to keep going was my mum giving me that countdown and my brother speaking to me after school.
“It was a difficult time, but I never let it beat me down.”
During our chat, Mae’s parents, both exsoldiers, and brother are mentioned more than once. Family means the world to her, and their belief and support kept her solid and focused.
“My mum got diagnosed with MS a couple of years ago, and she has always been an incredibly strong role model in my life. No matter what she is going through, especially with a massive autoimmune disease, she is still enjoying her life. I took a massive leaf out of her book to understand that stuff in my life is going to go wrong, and there will always be people that don’t like what I’m doing, but as long as I enjoy it and I am helping people, then I am doing something right.”
As a youngster, music became her passion and her friend, even though it took a while for her to realise as much.
“Music would become this after school therapy,” she says with hindsight, “I didn’t really notice it become a hobby, but I was playing four or five hours a day, seven days a week for about four years; “I was playing after school, in the mornings and whenever I got a spare moment to sit down and give myself some self therapy with this piano, it kept me going in my childhood.”
Diagnosed with ADHD (her recent single about living with the condition is catchier than the common cold, but decidedly more pleasant) she had struggled to find that thing that would ignite her: “I’d done martial arts clubs, arts things, I did loads of different outside hobbies.
“Then I played this song to my dad that I’d written on guitar about a mother wolf and her cubs and my dad turned around to me and said, ‘I think we’ve finally found what you’re good at.’
“Those words solidified in my brain and altered my brain chemistry,” she remembers, “It gave me that drive to succeed and from that point on my parents were the most incredible... They are the most incredible people, they took on everything.
“I could have said ‘I want to be a doctor’ or ‘I want to be someone academic.’ I said, ‘I want to be a musician’ which felt like chasing an impossible dream, but my parents both went, ‘Yeah, OK. If that’s what you want, let’s do it.’
“I am so thankful to have two people like that in my life. They made it possible, and I would not be here without them.”
Writing and playing was her outlet, her safe space and expressive place, and the more she practiced, the more Mae shone.
It was one of those gigs when I walked off and went, ‘That’s why I do it’.
And while she might be young, don’t confuse her current standing with overnight success – she’s been writing her own songs for nearly a decade and was a fixture on the pub circuit in her area.
It’s hard work fused with talent that has got her where she is.
As we mentioned earlier, it’s not so long ago that she was still working a job in her local ASDA – she inked a record deal on January 25, 2023 and then worked out her notice. By the summer she was performing on the Main Stage at Hyde Park.
“That was insane,” she says, with a little laugh, “I’d not been on a stage that big so it was very nerve-wracking but the crowd were amazing. It was one of those gigs when I walked off and went, ‘That’s why I do it.’
Glastonbury and Reading and Leeds also received her.
“To spend the first year of my career carting around the UK doing all these events was the best season of my life.
“I was told for many years that I was never going to amount to anything and I got told by a teacher or two that I wasn’t going to pass my GCSEs and wasn’t going to get a good job, because I wasn’t going to University. At college they said there wasn’t much hope.”
So says the girl who Meghan Trainor got in touch with because she wanted to work with her.
“She commented on a TikTok I had posted,” Mae says, still buzzing at the recollection, “It was so quick. The next thing I know I’m texting her and then I’m on a call with her.
“It was the biggest shock of my life, you don’t think you are going to be sat on a FaceTime call with Meghan Trainor, let alone doing a song with her!
“It was one of the best things to come out of last year. She is an incredible artist and made my year.”
I don’t want to leave my home just yet, I love it. A lot.
While clearly holding her parents up as heroes, this rising Queen of pop looked to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury for further inspiration.
“I just fell in love with Queen through my teenage years and Freddie became a massive idol, not only for his voice, but also his attitude as a person.
“All he wanted to do was help people and he did not care what people thought of him; he was unapologetically him, and that is what I am trying to instil in me.
“I have only just got into a period of time where I feel confident wearing what I want to wear and being the artist I want to be.
“Freddie Mercury is such a timeless role model for those kids to say, ‘You shouldn’t listen to what other people say, you need to be yourself and be unapologetically you’ – as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, be you.”
Mae’s music is upbeat and fun, but doesn’t shy away from serious subjects – and her words are resonating with others.
“I had a lady message me not long after If We Ever Broke Up had come out to say she had gone through quite a rough break-up and the song had given her a reason to feel empowered, and basically hold her crown up.
“I said to her, ‘this is the secret message behind the song.’ Yes, the song has got those jokey aspects – but the hidden reason behind it was a way to tell people that you shouldn’t walk out of a relationship feeling deflated, or that you’ve lost pieces of yourself.
“You need to walk out feeling strong and that you are going to move forward and feel happy again. That’s all I ever wanted people to feel with the song – enjoy the jokey side of it, but understand that it’s a song of empowerment.”
If the music ever goes quiet, there’s a therapist in the making right here, I venture.
“I would love to. I’ve always said to my friends, ‘If you ever need to talk about something, even if I’m uneducated in that situation, I will help as much as I can.
“All I want to do is help people,” she says, resolutely, “I’m not money driven, and I didn’t have much when I was a kid, so I’ve never been money orientated.
“I’m here to show all those kids that don’t feel like they fit anywhere, or feel like they can’t sit in a friend group, or are being cyber bullied... I want to show them that I came from being a weird kid, and came from the bottom. No matter where you come from or what background you are from, you can shine – you can get there, and you can achieve what you want to achieve.”
With so much on in Mae’s world, questions are being asked about her making the move to the big smoke, but she is in no rush to swap Northamptonshire for London.
“So many people have said to me ‘Are you going to move away? Are you going to move to London?’ but I want to hold off as long as possible.
“I’ve grown up here, and it’s my small town and it’s home for me. I don’t want to leave my home just yet, I love it. A lot.”
And she wants to delve deeper into the music scene that she inhabits: “In the midst of the chaos I’ve not had a moment to sit down and get into the scene properly, but this year is my year to show Northampton that I am a great supporter of their scene and that I want to be a part of it.”
Fans can expect to learn more about Mae too, who will be revealing more of herself through her new material.
“Over the past year I have been able to introduce my story to people, but this year I need to show the fans a little bit more of who I actually am, so I think there will be some ballad releases.
“I have shown I can do funk, but I’ve written ballads since I was 12 and I’ve got all these songs sitting in my catalogue. Why not release them and allow people to learn a bit more about me and what I stand for and where I came from?
“I’ve struggled to do that before, but I think I’m now ready to show the world.”
Oh, and there is a message for those bullies who made school difficult.
“Thank you for not believing in me,” she says, quietly, but firmly, “...because you gave me the determination to succeed.”

Graham Hulbert is a familiar face on the Milton Keynes music scene; fans of the hardhitting and alternative will know him most recently as the frontman with Our Man in the Bronze Age, and Broken Castles.
When not delivering the musical drama with them, he has discovered another way to get his kicks – exploring with the new solo project, Renormaliser
“It started life as me just noodling around in my basement with no real focus or goal, making new sounds, learning new instruments and doing whatever came to mind,” Graham told Pulse Music.
And with no creative restraint he didn’t know where it would go: “It was strange being creatively free to do anything I felt like but I also needed to self assess and then confront notions of what is subjectively ‘good’. I enjoyed the idea of a lack of restraint but at the same time wanted to make it engaging and listenable as opposed to just descending into self indulgent chaos,” he paused, “... that’s for album Number two!” he laughed. It was the challenge that made equal parts interesting and daunting,” he admitted.
“A few of the tracks are older ones I had knocking about and never had anywhere to put them but most of it was written in December and January, then I spent a month refining the songs and mixing it all.”

When we spoke with him earlier this year, Graham was still debating releasing Dwellings, but in time he parked his anxieties and went for it.
“Usually, you have the safety of a band behind you with a new release but when it’s just you it feels somewhat more vulnerable,” he reflected.
But while this was never meant to be a live proposition, Graham is eyeing up the stage from a distance.
“Now it’s here, it does feel like it would be fun to explore...”
32 Minutes
It’s me experimenting with drums, beats and synths to see what I could make. Coming from a heavy guitar rock band background, for me it was a different approach with sounds I hadn’t explored before. The song loosely deals with the concept of the last half an hour of your life, but it’s more out of curiosity and fascination than something depressing.
Bodies In Motion
I’d spent the evening trying to learn piano theory, but after hours of that relatively fruitless excursion, I heard the bassline in
my head, abandoned the keys and just went with it. It’s got a Battles-ey vibe and I deliberately wanted to add some wonky guitars and oddly placed drums to accentuate the almost funk feel of the track.
Maybe an anti-love song. It is quite cynical and about superficiality. A lot of the songs on this album started life as a bassline and an underlying rhythmic idea. Little One is definitely in that category. I liked the idea of a dark ballad with some grimey-ness and groove to it.
Waiting For
This is probably my favourite track on Dwellings, I just like the combination of floaty instruments and a fairly driving beat with loads of little percussion-ey things coming in and out.
Never Better
I chucked in some Gilmour-esque guitar rhythm parts here, which I wouldn’t normally do. The title is a little sarcastic and perhaps more truthfully tied into mental health issues that I’m interested in and also suffer from!
Killter
I set out to write out something that would suggest one rhythm at the beginning and then resolve in a different one as I love little musical tricks like that.. I wanted to keep things sparse and predominantly led by melody and rhythm which became the approach I took to most of the songs on Dwellings
Don’t Be Afraid
It’s fairly obvious that I take a lot of influence from Radiohead, and this track wears that on its sleeve. I wanted something floaty and sombre that was piano led with a dreamlike feel to it. I’m not a very proficient piano player and really just fumble around until I find chords that sound good. This was one of those happy accidents!
A really old song of mine from my solo acoustic days in Brighton, I’ve always really liked it, but questioned whether to include it as it’s a markedly different sound to the rest of the tracks but I also don’t like to feel that I ‘should’ stick to a particular style I like the sort of bluesy roll of it which to me is reminiscent of Fink, another big influence of mine.

‘The void he has left can never be filled’
When the news broke that Milton Keynes had lost one of its dance music innovators, it was a blow not just to his many friends, family and collaborators, but also to the scene he had been active in for so long.
Spatts, aka Ian Allen, one of lauded hip hop mob The Criminal Minds, passed away on December 30, 2023. His passing was unexpected, and he was taken too soon.
It’s perhaps not surprising that his friends have responded to the devastation in the most obvious of ways – with music, and lots of it.
“We first met at one of my Gauge gigs at The Pitz alongside Tuesday Strange and Able Mesh,” recalled Craig White, who became a friend and longtime collaborator of Spatts, “I was coming to the end of this industrial tinged project with Magic Alec, and Spatts stepped in and did a remix for us - from there SIR-VERE was born and we worked together on all the early band recordings.”
Fans can temper their sadness at Spatts’ loss by revelling in his work with a mighty feast of sounds just cut loose for you; Three EPs by The Secret Screens featuring SIR-VERE are yours to engage with.
My Dark Places, Mind Bomb and Brain Drain have been out for a couple of weeks now, and the long-players Relics 1 & 2 have just followed, all available through Worldsound/Virgin Music.
All of the tracks have been available previously, but in decidedly limited numbers.
“This is the first time the whole collection is available at the same time on the same label,” Craig told Pulse Music, “All 46 tracks have been remastered and a couple reworked from the demos I did with Spatts. It was a direct
collision of all our combined works into one big collective project showcasing our hip hop, breakbeat, twisted house, funk and lots of post punk vibes.”
These releases are part of a huge SIR-VERE catalogue reissue series through Virgin Music, with these particular choices being brought forward following the passing of Spatts.
We had fun and we laughed together. We both wanted to push boundaries in the electronic world and not be scared to throw all the styles into the pot.”
Craig reflects on his union with Spatts as a period of creativity that knew no bounds – there was no being held back when the two of them let their musical minds roam.
“We had fun and we laughed together. We both wanted to push boundaries in the electronic world and not be scared to throw all the styles into the pot,” Craig said, “His incredible ear for music was truly unique – he had the creative power to make whatever I threw at him musically, work.
“The Secret Screens will carry on pushing those boundaries and sonics of electronic music, with Spatts’ heartbeat at the core,’’ Craig promised, “The void he has left can never be filled. It’s still not real and I still think the phone may ring with him suggesting more ideas.
“I will always miss him, but will keep his legacy, his beats, and his soul alive in whatever we do.”

Not ‘just’ a cover band, these guys are an injection of the feel-good with the musical prowess to deliver some big songs.

Cool vibes will roll when Oddisee visits the Kiln Farm haunt on June 15, bringing elements of jazz, funk and go-go together in his hip-hop rooted production which ‘tackle the human condition with unwavering conviction and candour.’
Oddisee is wrapping up an extensive tour here in the Keynes, a trip that started in Adelaide at the start of last month and aside from taking him through Australia, the trek has visited New Zealand and Hong Kong (to name a couple) before running all over the UK.
Make this night a corker for him and fellow music man DJ Unown, who is out on the road with him.
The Great American Hootenanny on June 21& 22 will be bonkers busy with two days of plentiful action.
On the Friday: The Smashed in Pumpkins and Pearl Scam will be joined by local players Lurch in the venue, while in the bar, house band Francis will roll out the best in rock, pop and country.
Taking care of business on the Saturday will be something quite different – with a country DJ club night courtesy of Kickin’ It Country. Free cowboy hats and cornhole, and confetti showers are promised. You simply park the motor, erm we mean horse, and let your cowboy boots lead the way!

In the video for the banging rocker –also featuring their label mates The Blue Stones – the band are chased around various ski slopes by the ‘famous Yeti of Hemel Hempstead.’ Not be confused with the elusive Yeti of Milton Keynes. More than two decades since the delightful Chitty Chitty Bang Bang first premiered at the London Palladium, a brand-new scrumptious production will hit the stage of Milton Keynes Theatre for a flying visit in July.
Ian Fleming wrote the book more than 50 years ago, and the version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang soon coming to town will be an amalgamation of his original story, the film version by Roald Dahl, and the previous stage production.
“For me, Chitty is like an old friend,” said director Thom Southerland, “I used to watch it as a child and was in fact in the audience at the very first preview of the Palladium production, so it’s a show that has always stuck with me and it now feels very special to be putting my own stamp on it.”
Olivier-nominee Adam Garcia is taking on the role of Caractacus. A stage favourite, he has previously delivered the goods in Saturday Night Fever and Kiss Me, Kate, and on the big screen his appearances include Death on the Nile, Murder on the Orient Express and Coyote Ugly
The role of Grandpa Potts will be played by Liam Fox, who spent a fair amount of time supping in The Woolpack - well, he did appear in more than 1000 episodes Emmerdale, after all. He also has a long list of other TV credits – from Cold Feet and Corrie to Dinnerladies and Clocking off Charlie Brooks is the Child Catcher, and she knows a thing or two about playing a villain – having made the role of Janine Butcher one of soap-land’s best known baddies.
It’s a solid cast, but just how do you set about bringing a fresh look to such a beloved show?

“One thing we definitely won’t be changing, though, is Chitty herself,” Thom promised, “She will be as spectacular as ever and I can’t wait to see her take flight.”
Audiences are in for a treat, the director promises: “This is a wildly entertaining show which all the family can enjoy. It has beautifully lavish sets and costumes, phenomenal special effects and, in my opinion, one of the greatest musical scores ever written.

There is much that could be written about the wonder of this show, but if Thom had to pick just three words, which three would they be?
“...extravagant, joyful and, dare I say, fantasmagorical!”
In Chitty Chitty Bang Bang you will meet absent-minded inventor Caractacus Potts who restores a broken-down old racing car with the help of his children Jemima and Jeremy. Soon the family discover the car has magical powers, and along with the delectable Truly Scrumptious, they end up on a hilarious fantastical adventure to far-off lands.
“Although this is a story that is very well-known and loved by audiences, there are also aspects of the original story which are lesser known and which we will be showcasing in our version,” Thom explained, “Of course, our show will still have all the wonderful parts that we remember from the film. Caractacus Potts will still have his bamboo stick to dance to Me Ol’ Bamboo, and we will be dancing through Scrumptious’s Sweet Factory to Toot Sweets, but we will also be bringing something that feels fresh and new within this story and have even added some new songs.”

Ihad had a great idea while down the pub the other night, and on sober reflection, I feel it warrants serious consideration: especially as it could make me very rich.
HS2 is still ongoing. As the arguments for and against it continue to rage, I note that it doesn’t serve Northampton or Milton Keynes. I am sure some commuters eager to save a dozen minutes to their destinations will be happy to spend an extra hour or more commuting to the nearest station. However, given the unpredictability of such a commute on local roads, perhaps a train into London will facilitate better access to HS2 and be less time consuming?
Back to the pub. A question had come to me after the first pint or three. How does HS2 benefit our area (and more specifically, Northampton and Milton Keynes)? It was then that the great idea (or errant pool ball) struck me. Super-quick travel between the two places would benefit everyone. That argument, originally made in favour of HS2, must be equally valid for a NorthamptonMilton Keynes link. Businesses and people would share in the generated wealth. Everyone could buy bigger cars.
Naturally, a suitable name had to be given to the enterprise. As I downed my fourth (or was it fifth?) pint of Old Irksome, I had realised there was, or had been, an HS3. The following day, while recovering from a mysterious headache, checking revealed that the term, ‘HS3’ has been attached to a variety of links and formats covering an area up north. However, no one had used, HS4
A straight route is shorter and faster. At the Milton Keynes end it makes sense to terminate near Milton Keynes Central. That would
entail the demolition of a few dozen houses in Bradwell, Bancroft, Blue Bridge and a bit of New Bradwell near Wolverton. In Northampton, in keeping with the idea of linking to the existing railway station, the proposal only requires a small part of the town centre to be demolished, but Delapré Abbey would have to go. On the plus side, the University of Northampton campus would hardly be touched.
Of course, so that we all eventually get to buy bigger cars and enjoy greater business success in the area, the project would need to be properly funded and lead by the correct person. That leader would have to focus solely on our area so as to realise the goal and maximise

all the benefits it will surely bring.
We need someone who will ignore all the objections from the NIMBYs living in the path of the line. I can do that. I also know a couple of chaps with shovels. A bloke living down the road from me has a lump hammer, which looks like a miniature sledgehammer. Therefore, I think we are good to go!
All we need do next is agree my remuneration. Somewhere in the region of £400 million seems reasonable. I’ll supply my Caymans account number when I get the nod…

Flavour of the Times - There’s quite a feel-good factor as this month opens. There’s lots of communication going on – a bit too much, actually – at least in the first fortnight, and friendly feelings are definitely there. Saturn, however, is the party pooper in the mix, which means that you can’t really just throw all caution to the winds and abandon your responsibilities. This is all about the polarity between duty and responsibilities (such as your work life) on the one hand and connectedness on the other, to your family and home. You may like being the center of attention, but with several planets in Gemini this month, sharing and communicating with others is emphasized. It is perfectly possible to be a leader within the team, but you may have to do a bit more listening than you might otherwise do and bite your tongue at times. The first half of June will be sociable with lots being said with all those planets in communicative Gemini. This might feel rather overwhelming, and your capacity for analysis may lead you to (quite rightly in some cases) distrust and ignore a lot of it. Luckily, the sun changes signs into Cancer on the 19th, followed by the full moon, which will restore some balance.

It’s a generally agreeable month, and relationships should go fairly smoothly as long as you accept that it’s not a time for intensity and passion. Sure, there are some roadblocks along the way, and you may experience some limitations to what you thought you could achieve with a particular person you may have pinned your hopes on. You don’t really like trivialities, and this is a time when there is an awful lot of sociable chitchat, but you will probably conclude that most of it is just talk with no real substance. It’s all a bit parochial this month, isn’t it? Everyone seems like a local gossip when you want to be jetting off to faraway lands. On the other hand, your local contacts and social groups are important, so try not to appear too offhand with them. The full moon will be in your sign around June 22nd, which will challenge you to be a bit more emotionally connected than you sometimes are.
