Letter from the Chairman

Dear Residents,

What a moment in history we have all just lived through, our children and grandchildren will remember this for all their lives. It seems like only yesterday we were celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and now we have a new King, Charles III. The Queen's last act was to invite Liz Truss to form a government, so much change in such a short time.

Even if you are not keen on royalty I am sure that you will agree that there were some beautifully choreographed moments of pageantry, something this country does so well.

We, at the Parish Council, are especially pleased to be planting trees this autumn for the Queen's Green Canopy and we will dedicate a tree to Queen Elizabeth II. We have two projects planned, a cherry tree walk and a community orchard.

The community orchard will be planted in Grangewood Park towards the end of November to give the trees the best chance. The project will involve local schools and a chartered arboriculturist and we hope it will be both educational and fun. Once planted, we will be looking to form a Friends of the Orchard group to help everything thrive.

The cherry tree walk will be planted in December and will form a linear walk through the Granary Road parks and the Blackymore Open Space. I am hoping for something like Japan in the Spring, eventually anyway!

Remembrance Sunday will be marked in Grangewood Park with a secular ceremony to which you are all invited and last year it was very well attended. We will, of course, have a display at

the library of poppies made by local groups. Please let us know if you have a particular story to tell.

And that brings me to Christmas! I know the date is booked for the Festive Fair at the library and of course Santa will be honouring us with his presence once more for the switch on of the Christmas tree. Talking of lights, don’t forget our annual Christmas lights competition! Each year the competition gets stiffer as East Hunsbury rises to the challenge.

This winter will be tough for us all, but hopefully we can get through it and still keep smiling. There are a number of initiatives planned to make warm spaces available during the day so don’t sit at home and be cold and miserable. We will keep you posted.

East Hunsbury Life Magazine does not accept any responsibility for errors and omissions in this publication or the accuracy of claims made by advertisers. Views expressed by contributors are their own and not necessarily shared by the publishers.

Cloudy2Clear, A Local Family Service With A Smile

I think we can all agree that as the weeks and months go by and we move further away from a disastrous 2020, that we can once again start to feel optimistic about the future. Now we are hopefully ready to take on the remainder of 2021 both safely and positively. One thing is for sure though, there have also been some heart warming positives that we can take out of last year. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis. I think few would argue that in this case what has proven to be important is local community and family spirit.

East Hunsburyʼs Parish Councillors

Meet our new Councillor!

Councillor Ken Hodgson

I was born in an east London suburb and moved to Northampton in 1985. I have lived in East Hunsbury for 20 years and have no plans to move on, and I have many friends and acquaintances in this local area.

I am by apprenticeship, then higher education, an electronics and communications engineer. Later in life I became Chairman of a number of European companies with associated businesses.

I am now retired from paid work but do carry out other various volunteer roles. I am, when time permits, a regular at the local Collingtree park gym and also a keen traveller. As an East Hunsbury Flood Warden I help to stabilise our local flood risk, I am also a member of Danes Camp Medical Centre Patient Participation Group striving to make our Doctors' Surgery the best in the area. As somebody who volunteers a lot locally, I was pleased to be able to fill a casual vacancy and become a parish councillor for East Hunsbury.

Ken was co-opted to the Parish Council in June 2022.

Come and meet the West Northamptonshire Council customer services team

WestNorthamptonshire Council has a Customer Experience Strategy which focuses on delivering support to people in a timely, efficient and accessible way, regardless where they live or how they want to contact us.

As part of this strategy, we have set out an ambition to ‘meet people where they are’ – this means working in ways which are already trusted, and being where people need us. The focus is to provide the right support to people in the right location, as early on as possible, and in the manner most suitable to their needs.

One way of achieving this is by being present in person in our communities. Customer Services are now working collaboratively with Hunsbury Library to make our services more accessible with a ‘we are here to help approach.’

Together with library staff and partner agencies, we provide services in a welcoming and informal setting and through two-way conversations, we deal with any queries or requests they may have to prevent concerns from getting worse.

We are currently available on the third Thursday of every month following The Big Sing event, from 1-4pm, 20th October, 17th November, 15th December, with the exception of September when we will be joining some of our partner agencies on Saturday 24th between 11am and 1pm.

East Hunsbury Remembers

Each year our community comes together to focus on remembrance, including our community gathering on Remembrance Sunday – this year falling on Sunday 13th November.

In the lead up to that Sunday, we also focus on creating community displays, with hundreds of poppies created by residents of all ages. This includes local crafters, seniors, our local schools, and many families. From wool, to recycled plastic, the poppies come in all shapes and sizes, including our huge community wreath, placed outside of Hunsbury Library. Last year we introduced a small field of wooden crosses and emblems of other faiths, from the Royal British Legion, and this year we will be inviting local school children and other community groups, to help to create this part of the installation. If any residents would like to come to place a cross, please do get in touch. We will be placing them week commencing 7th Nov, please email community@easthunsburyparishcouncil.gov.uk or ring 01604 708429 (office).

East Hunsbury Parish Council

The parish council meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month at Blacky More Community Centre – all of our meetings are open to the public so feel free to come along and find out what we are doing on behalf of residents.

As well as monthly full council meetings, we have three committees with different areas of responsibility who meet regularly throughout the year.

Community Engagement Committee

We are very proud of our community engagement commitment in East Hunsbury. The Community Engagement Officer and the Parish Clerk work to produce a programme of events and activities which is reviewed and agreed by the committee on an ongoing basis. The Committee are responsible for delivering parish events and community initiatives, and ideas from residents are regularly used in developing our programme.

Resources Committee

This committee is responsible for overseeing finance, including regular checks on what we spend, and setting the budget each year which determines how much is collected from residents for services in the parish. The committee also has responsibility for oversight of the running of Blacky More Community Centre and its finances, and for staffing.

East Hunsbury Parish Council

Parks & Open Spaces and Climate Change

This committee started off as two new committee groups, but there is such overlap to the items we discuss that we thought it sensible to join them up as one committee. The Parish Council were transferred three parks from Northampton Borough Council in March 2021, and it is likely that we will be offered more open space in the parish to look after on behalf of residents. This committee is responsible for the financial and maintenance commitments of looking after the parks and open spaces in the parish, and for discussing and delivering initiatives to help make East Hunsbury, and the parish council, more environmentally friendly.

East Hunsbury Orchard Project and Tree Planting for the Queen's Green Canopy

In November, we will be planting two areas of East Hunsbury. Firstly, Grangewood Park will be the location for our Community Orchard, which will feature heritage fruit trees and wildflower planting. During National Tree Week, pupils from all three local schools will be joining the planting team, for the installation. The pupils from their Forest Schools Groups will be invited to be part of the project, as it literally grows!

Funding for the project has been obtained by a Lottery grant by Cllr Claire Douglas, who is leading on this green initiative for the Parish Council. At the other end of the parish, we will

also be planting an avenue of 20 flowering cherry trees, starting in Blacky More open space and going across to Granary Road East and West. They will be planted as part of the Queens Green Canopy Project, dedicated to the memory of the late Queen Elizabeth II. A fitting memorial to her majesty.

Friends of the Orchard

We will be looking for volunteers to support the orchard, going forward. This will include helping with watering, pruning, picking. Volunteers will be given training and guidance. If you would like to become a volunteer, to help us, please get in touch email

Meanwhile… up at Hunsbury Library, the volunteer gardeners will be joined by local school children from East Hunsbury Primary, to plant our spring bulbs. Lots of digging will be rewarded, as per last year, with hot chocolate and biscuits! The Parish Council will be returning the favour, helping with volunteers to create new gardening and allotment space at the school itself. News from Simon de Senlis school

The school seemed quiet over the six-week summer holiday, and it was a pleasure to see the happy, smiling faces of the children, staff and families on Monday September 5th as they walked through the gate to begin the new year. Children love to learn at Simon de Senlis and within minutes there was the usual buzz of teaching and learning taking place across all classrooms. It has also been a privilege to welcome our new Reception children to school and we are so excited to begin their learning journey with them.

Children love to read at Simon de Senlis and everyone was excited to see the development of our school library and class libraries over the summer, where books are available for all to enjoy. Our reading and writing after school clubs are another way that children can share their love of reading.

The environment is a key focus of school life at Simon de Senlis and our focus on teaching and learning in the outdoors can be seen through the use of our Forest School. The Forest School is a large expanse of woodland with learning zones and resources, where learning through investigation, problem solving, and experimentation takes place. This learning covers all areas of the curriculum and more than anything, we see children develop their collaboration and cooperation skills, along with their development of the use of language to ask

enquiring questions and discuss their findings with each other. Across school, our School Council members and our Eco Ambassadors ensure that environmental factors are at the forefront of the school and that we all understand the positive impact we can make on the school and wider environment. This includes litter picking and the collection of crisp packets to turn into blankets for the homeless. Last year, our Eco Club enabled children to share their positive messages to classes across the school, built bug hotels, planted seeds and positioned bird boxes around the school grounds.

It has been a wonderful start to the new school year!

A bright future for Wootton Park

Newly elected learner leaders

Krystelle Meyers-Netty and Ellis Phillips, share their thoughts on Wootton Park School as it reaches a key milestone. This year our school has reached a key milestone in its short history - that of finally being at full learner capacity with a full cohort of EYFS through to Year 13. Back in September 2016, when our small school opened to a mere 180 learners in a small white building outside the Police Headquarters, we couldn’t have predicted the transformational impact it would have on our lives. As either an original learner at the school, or having joined at the start of Year 12, one key ethos has remained constant for us both, that of the importance of community.

The sense of family the school has offered us and our peers, has enabled us to grow as young people, to the point where we are now - 7 years later - looking to be the first cohort of Year 13s to move onto new post-18 opportunities.

Along with its obvious changes – that of our relocation to our new state of the art build and expansion of learner numbers – we have also been able to engage in a range of leadership opportunities, with our recent election as Head Boy and Head Girl coming as a true moment of privilege for both of us. One aspect of our leadership we will strive to realise over the next year, comes in our willingness to reach out to the local community and connect with the people that our school serves.

We believe that our school has the potential to become central to our community and by looking into learner volunteering schemes, we can create strong connections. One key area for us as Sixth Formers, is that of recognising the wealth of careers knowledge we have on our door step. Since the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions, we have been able to host some local businesses as part of our careers fairs, but we would like to widen our reach and encourage anyone in the local area to make contact with the school if they have some expertise to share.

Early Years improvments planned for East Hunsbury Primary School

Starting school is undoubtedly a huge step in a child’s life and, at East Hunsbury Primary School, we are committed to giving every child the best possible start to their education. We know that children get ‘one chance’ at a primary education and that is why we are undertaking an extensive renovation project throughout our Early Year’s environment.

We are working with the award winning Timotay Playscapes to transform our Early Years’ provision. The purpose of this work is to ignite creativity, independence, innovation and happiness from the moment that the children start with us.

This exciting renovation will include:

• a large construction area consisting of pullies, cranes and diggers;

• a purpose-built sand and water area;

• a performance area and creative studio;

• music equipment, a mud diner and learning shack;

• a role play village.

With the opportunity to write, read, create and challenge themselves woven throughout.

This work is part of a longer-term, whole-school renovation project which will also include a brand new all-weather pitch to enhance their sporting facilities and it all builds upon the school’s recent glowing Ofsted report which you can by scanning the Ofsted Report QR code below.

Choosing a school is an important moment in any family’s life and we have spaces across our school. If your child is due to start reception in September 2023, or you are thinking of changing schools, you are warmly invited to attend one of our tours which you can book by clicking the School Tour QR code below.

We look forward to welcoming you to our extraordinary school.

Be Kind. Work Hard. Believe.

Year three children learn the three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

AtEast Hunsbury Primary School, the children in year 3 have been learning all about the three R’s. Not just the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic but how to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Why should we recycle resources? This was the geographical question that underpinned their learning back in July.

They were taught:

• What it means to recycle and why it is important.

• How we can reduce the amount of waste we throw into landfill sites.

• What happens when we recycle and should everyone have to it.

• How we can reduce waste by reusing or repairing items.

It was during this last key learning point that we thought about how much plastic is used nowadays. Despite recent incentives, plastic bags are one of the worst sources of plastic pollution. They’re very difficult to recycle and not accepted in home recycling bins. Since they are so lightweight, the wind often picks them up and blows them into the environment. This made us think about trying to reduce our usage of single use plastic like plastic bags but also about reusing and adapting something old to use instead.

The idea of T-shirt shopping bags was born! We asked for donations of old t shirts and the children were able to make trendy, hardwearing shopping bags – no sewing skills were required. All they needed was an old t shirt, a pair of scissors and fingers that can knot.

The children in year 3 learned a valuable lesson is reusing and recycling whilst making the T-shirt shopping bags

They took pride in their creations, and it was encouraging to see how many children used their ‘new’ bags to carry everyday school essentials.

How to make your own T-Shirt Shopping Bag:

1. Turn your T- shirt inside out.

2. Fold the T-shirt in half so the sleeves line up.

3. Cut off the sleeves inside the seam.

4. Unfold and cut around the neckline to make a U shape (don’t go past the bottom of the sleeve).

5. Cut strips across the bottom, about 2.5 cm wide and 10cm deep.

6. Tie the strips together with a tight knots and then diagonally for added strength.

7. Flip the bag the right side out and TA-DA! Your very own bag is ready to use.

Blacky More Community Centre

Forsome years Blacky More Community Centre was run by the parish council under a lease from Northampton Borough Council. We had always hoped that the centre would be transferred to the parish council one day and were pleased that this was finally able to happen on 31st March 2021.

Many of you will know children who have attended Puddleducks Day Nursery over the years - you may even have attended yourself! - Puddleducks use the Centre every day during term time and have been residents at the Centre almost since it first opened. There are Rainbow and Brownies groups, a dance school, and an

art class for young artists, all booked in on a regular basis – plus lots of other groups that use the Centre for occasional bookings for yoga or puppy training. There’s lots going on!

Blacky More Community Centre is also available for private hire and is ideal for children’s parties, meetings or training sessions.

History comes to life at Delapré Abbey

At Delapré Abbey, just South of the river Nene, Northampton, something unique is happening to the visitor experience.

History comes to life, in partnership with a unique group of living history specialists. Delapré Abbey is recreating for visitors the experiences of every day Mediaeval lifestyle of a religious order. The group, named Revelation, offers a unique historical experience for visitors.

On your visit to the Abbey, you will experience 900 years of living history. Founded in 1145, Delapré is undoubtedly a secret jewel in Northampton’s historical crown.

There has always been a warm welcome at Delapré. Now with the addition of Revelation you will experience far more than ever before.

“The whole family loved it”, “at school, history left me cold, at Delapré hot posset by the fireside, certainly warmed us up to the historical experience”, said one recent visitor.

A wonderful place to live!

Icame

to live in East Hunsbury 22 years ago.

For most of that time I lived with my wife on the Grange Wood Estate. I soon realised how fortunate we were to have such good neighbours, wonderful areas to walk in and a handy bus service.

By the time of the second Lockdown my wife had died, I was not in as good a health as I used to be. The garden and fencing were becoming more than I could keep up with. So what to do?

With my son we looked at a couple of modern Sheltered Housing Complexes. We both agreed they were soulless and more like morgues, not places I would like to be, or be happy in. I had lived here all this time with all the benefits I so appreciated, as well as friends in the area.

Above: Midsummer Night Event.

Right: Two ladies taking part in a day workshop to prepare banners for our Medieval event this month.

Above: The view of KRC not seen from the outside.

Left: Olivia Hulley, entertaining at an evening concert.

Rather in desperation we went to look at King Richard Court, of which I had been aware of, but like so many in the Hunsbury’s, I knew nothing about.

As soon as we entered the door people were laughing, the staff were so understanding and loving, the rooms bright and spacious. Still unsure, I visited twice more before I said “YES”.

Having been here ten months I am so pleased I came. So I would like to share with you, over the next few months some of the many activities that go on in KRC.

Our flats are reached along open balconies and not along dark corridors. We have a planter each, so grow what we want, with a courtyard below.

We have an excellent bus service outside, taking us toTesco, town and hospital. I can enjoy the lovely areas for walking.

At the back of the building there are all the major shops you need plus also a pub for a drink and a meal when you don’t want to cook or eat in the restaurant in our building.

Reuse and Recycle

Recycling

in West Northamptonshire

is Easy! Please reuse and recycle as much as you can. Every bit of recycling counts!

Each home in Northampton should have access to a recycling bin or box; a general waste bin or green sack and a food waste recycling bin (not available for all flats). Please contact the council if you are missing any of your bins.

Here is a handy reminder of what to put in each bin to avoid putting the wrong things into the wrong bins. If the bins are contaminated with the wrong waste unfortunately it may not be able to be recycled.

Remember to rinse your recycling to remove any food before throwing it loose into the bin. Please don’t use plastic bags.

New Website for West Northants:

Our new waste management section on the West Northants website will tell you everything you need to know about our waste services in Northampton. Go to www.westnorthants.gov.uk/ bins-recycling-and-waste

Did you know...?

You can also recycle batteries and small electrical items. Batteries can cause fires in bins and so we are asking everyone to ensure that any old batteries are placed in a small clear plastic bag and placed on top of your recycling bin for recycling. Please don’t dispose of your batteries in any bin. Small electrical items can also be placed on your recycling bin for recycling. Just remember to remove the batteries first.

Household Waste Recycling Centres:

In Northampton we have 2 HWRC’s based at Sixfields and Ecton and another at Brixworth. As well as accepting bulky waste and recycling some sites accept other hazardous and waste which isn’t collected at kerbside. Find your local HWRC and what you can take to it. www.westnorthants.gov.uk/ bins-recycling-and-waste

Coming Soon:

Watch out for the new West Northants App available to Northampton residents soon. This app will tell you which bins are due each week, what can be recycled, where your HWRCs are, how to report fly tipping and much more. This will replace the Northampton Borough waste App.

Don’t forget!

Garden Waste Collection subscriptions will reopen for 2023/24 collections in February at £42/year or 80p per week! Go to www.westnorthants.gov.uk/ bin-collection-services to subscribe.

Waste collections and HWRC Opening at Christmas: Some collection days may change over the Christmas period. To find out if your collection is affected go to www.westnorthants.gov.uk/ bin-collection-services. There is also a calendar (available to download) which will show you any changes and collection dates for next year.

All HWRC sites will remain open as usual until 2pm on Christmas Eve and will be closed for Christmas day, Boxing day and New Years Day only.

New Welcome Guide for Northampton residents:

If you have recently moved to a brand new house in Northampton and are unsure about our waste collection service don’t panic! West Northants has been working hard to produce a new Welcome Guide which will be sent out with your new set of bins to provide you with essential information and waste management services. If you are moving into an older property you should already have a set of bins to use. If not please contact the council and click on www.westnorthants.gov.uk/bincollection-services for all collection information.

Make your Sustainability Pledge:

If you would like to contribute towards a more sustainable Northampton make a personal pledge at www.westnorthants.gov.uk/sustainable-westnorthants. The website also contains other tips to help reduce your impact on the environment.
