Letter from the Chairman

A

vid readers of the Chairman’s letter will recollect that the photo from last summer was used in the Autumn edition of the magazine to try and prolong summer passing. It is being used again this time to give hope that spring and summer will soon be upon us. A number of things have happened since the last letter. On the community front the Christmas Fete at the library was very well supported and those present were treated to the excellent cakes and sausage rolls by the WI and some lovely singing by the children of East Hunsbury Primary School and Simon de Senlis Primary School choirs, as well as a variety of stallholders. On the Christmas theme, 100 seniors attended the Seniors Christmas party. There was a lot of positive response to this event which was held at the Abbey Centre and had games and a DJ to keep everyone entertained. The Christmas events take a lot of time and organisation so thanks to Liz, Caroline, and especially Jayne for organising and participating on the day. As mentioned above warmer weather is on its way (hopefully) and proposals for summer events are currently under consideration so watch this space. What is in the diary for early summer is a Wellbeing Hub and a Climate Hub, and you’ll find save the dates inside. With regard to what has generally been occurring, I am sure you will have noticed the works in Penvale Park. This has previously been mentioned and follows on from planning permission being granted to re-profile the park to seek to alleviate the flooding that has caused issues

in Lichfield drive over the past few years. Whilst the main works have been completed there will be landscaping once the time is right to do so. Schools and volunteers will be invited to take part. On the subject of works you will have seen the resurfacing on the A45. This is a consequence of the SEGRO development at Junction 15 M1. The Parish Council raised concerns over additional traffic on the road. National Highways have advised that the material used (which is a new type of surfacing material) should deaden the noise of cars and lorries so it is hoped that this will be quieter for residents who live closest to the A45. Time will tell. The Vistry development at Collingtree Park is of course on-going and it does seem from the latest information from Vistry that works in East Hunsbury will start in earnest later this year. Residents who have either walked by the golf course or driven past on the M1 will have noticed that they have broken through into the field adjoining the M1 (being East Hunsbury) and works have started on the noise bund and will shortly commence on a new road to join the development already built. Residents will have also seen that there is a proposal on a Western Expansion. The Parish Council are keeping a close eye on this and there will be a full update at the appropriate time. I have once again run out of space (like X, nee Twitter) I am only permitted a certain numbers of characters but you can keep up-to date by checking the website and Facebook page. Councillor Michael Campbell Chairman, East Hunsbury Parish Council

Brockhall Circular Walk Written by Dave Askew

H

appy New Year to everyone and here’s to another fun year of getting out and about. It’s certainly something that we’re finding with more and more people viewing our walks and coming on a group walk for the first time. I must admit, I’m not a great fan of mud so, in winter, tend to stick to good surfaces. Plus a bonus is always finding a café at the end. This month’s wonderful 3.5 mile walk fits that bill perfectly and explores the hidden gem that’s Brockhall. It’s a walk we go back to time and time again throughout the year. It starts at the Heart of the Shires just north of Weedon. Parking is free and the walk starts by 12

The ‘Needs to Know’ Distance: 3.55 miles (5.71km) Time to walk: Roughly 1 hour Difficulty: An easy walk suitable for when the field paths are muddy. Most of the walk is on single track roads with a short stretch along a canal path. Parking: The Heart of the Shires Shopping Village Public toilets: The Heart of the Shires Shopping Village is only a short stroll from the start of the canal section of the walk

descending a track that leads to the canal. It’s a particularly beautiful, short stretch but we soon leave it again at the next bridge. Look out for two characters on the bank. Their ‘attire’ changes frequently! Next we follow a quiet lane that crosses the M1 to arrive in stunning Brockhall. Be cheeky and head down the drive to have a peep at the Hall. In World War II the hall and its grounds were used by the American Office of Strategic Studies, an early predecessor of the CIA. Take your time wandering through this lovely hamlet and make a note to come back in the summer when the cottages are covered in flowers. The villagers are lovely and you may find them sharing their stories with you. From here we follow a gated quiet road through the estate before turning back towards the M1 again. Look out for the humps and hollows that show where the lost village of Muscott once stood. All that remains is the magnificent gatehouse.

The walk skirts the grounds of Brockhall Hall (above). Prepare to meet some 'different fellow walkers' along the routes (left)

Now it’s a simple climb back up the hill to where that warm drink awaits you!

The curriculum at Simon de Senlis and beyond…

A

t Simon de Senlis, we are dedicated to ensuring that the curriculum across all subjects is fantastic! On top of this wonderful curriculum, we are dedicated to ensuring that the children’s learning is enhanced with additional opportunities, working with external professionals and experts in their field. These amazing people who we work with, bring our curriculum to life, inspire our children and offer them so many additional opportunities. We are very proud to share a small selection of the additional experiences that have taken place so far this year.

The Saints Rugby Football Club

We were delighted to be asked to take part in The Northampton Saints Foundation Sustainability Green Game fixture. This involved staff from The Saints visiting school to deliver an assembly on the environment and sustainability, along with two of our pupils being chosen as Sustainability Champions who will join the green game on January 27th on the pitch at half time.

14

This inspiring assembly linked closely to the work our Eco Ambassadors are completing within school to ensure we continue to be a school with sustainability and the environment at our heart.

The University of Northampton

Our close links with the University of Northampton allow us to be a forefront of enrichment opportunities for our pupils. We are currently working with the university on two initiatives

EAST HUNSBURY

which are enabling our children to share their voice, make changes, develop their confidence and enrich their learning. The Changemaker initiative has allowed children across school to propose ideas that will have a positive impact on the school grounds and enhance the learning of every pupil. This has resulted in children presenting their ideas and finding ways to make them happen, all whilst working with staff from SdS and the university. In addition, being invited to take part in the Debating Competition at the University at the end of January has allowed children to visit the University, learn about the complex skill of debating, develop their oracy, build confidence and have fun!

John Bowman and Silhouette Youth Theatre

As part of our superb unit on Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’, we were lucky to work with the composer and musician John Bowman. John worked with our children to write the lyrics and compose the music to a piece of music linked to the play. Silhouette Youth Theatre have worked with our children to bring the play to life through drama and dance. Both of these experts in their field, allowed our children to express their thoughts and feelings around Shakespeare’s play and build confidence and enjoyment to all involved.

Life

We are looking forward to these pieces coming together in a performance at The Royal Theatre for our Year 5 pupils later in the term.

Sport

Working alongside Northampton Sport and taking part in fixtures and festivals allows our children to develop their sporting skills, their team work, their ability to support others and the enjoyment that sport brings. Our weekly swimming lessons within our community at Danes Camp is an event that is giving children a necessary life skill as their grow, along with the happiness and enjoyment that being in the water brings. In addition, we are also currently working with Northampton Tennis Coaching who are developing the skills of children within school to be great tennis players and as they say, ‘helping everyone to become a tennis hero’. Within the coming weeks and months, we are looking forward to working with and welcoming so many more professionals and experts to enhance the wonderful experiences that children receive every day at Simon de Senlis Primary. We say that ‘We are all here to make a dent in the universe’ and we can be guaranteed that our amazing children have been inspired by these opportunities to do just that.

Paired reading at Wootton Park School

H

ere at Wootton Park School we are proud to be an all-through school, having both Primary and Secondary learners. We are passionate about developing opportunities for primary and secondary learners to work together. One fantastic cross-phase activity we offer is our Paired Reading scheme. In a weekly twenty-minute session, learners from Years 1-10 read together, monitored by their tutor and class teacher. The secondary learners listen to the primary learners read and many actively enjoy the responsibility and maturity required for this. Secondary learners are encouraged to ask the primary learner questions whilst/after reading to check the learners’ reading comprehension. We use the FANTASTIC question lens for this to enable a range of questions to be asked. Paired Reading means our primary learners can develop their confidence and reading ability by reading with the secondary learners. Secondary learners also grow in confidence as they learn to coach and encourage the primary learner. The same secondary learners read with the same primary learners each week. This allows the secondary learner to build a relationship with the primary learner and watch their progress with reading develop over time. Secondary learners also write an overview of the primary learner’s reading that week in their reading log, which records all of the feedback primary get on their reading. 16

Secondary learners sit and listen to Primary learners read during Paired Reading - something that is educationally beneficial to both participants

We are incredibly proud of this initiative and know that both primary and secondary learners get a huge amount out of the experience. Below is some feedback we received about Paired Reading from our primary learners. ‘I like paired reading because I get to talk to the Year 9s!’ ‘I like paired reading because the secondary learners give me feedback on my reading.’ ‘My secondary learner wrote in my reading log that I read with confidence.’

Forest School at East Hunsbury Primary School

H

ere at East Hunsbury Primary School, we LOVE learning whether that is indoors or outside and, as part of our commitment to outdoor learning, we have invested and implemented a very successful Forest School. It is our vision at EHPS, that every child experiences an aspirational, enabling and inclusive curriculum, and we know that in this everchanging, busy world, life skills such as resilience, risk taking, empathy and critical thinking are essential in supporting children to successfully navigate their futures. We believe that Forest School is a brilliant way of helping children develop these skills and that is why it is an integral part of our school curriculum. We offer regular sessions across our Early Years, Mainstream and Specialist Unit classes, as well as 18

part of our well-being and pastoral support team offer. Children are outside, engaging in Forest School five days a week, in all seasons and, in all weathers! You will also find us learning offsite in other woodland areas such as Penvale

Issue 6 | For information about what’s going on in your area visit www.easthunsburyparishcouncil.gov.uk

Park and even our school Houses are named after local forestry areas: Salcey, Whittlewood, Everdon and Harlestone. Our Forest school sessions are always led by fully trained and qualified Forest School Leaders, and we even have a brilliant Forest School Manager who oversees the whole provision.

So, what is Forest School?

Forest school is an internationally recognised innovative approach to education, embracing the outdoors as an inspirational learning environment that facilitates holistic development, where the children are free to explore, take managed risks and drive their own learning at a pace that suits their particular needs.

Why do we do it?

The natural environment stimulates all of the senses and research proves that there are benefits to physical and mental wellbeing, as well as social and emotional benefits to being outside. Forest School suits all learning styles, attributed to its play-based pedagogy and hands on approach.

What will the children do at Forest School?

Activities include: tree climbing, mini-beast hunting, conjuring up magic potions, cooking, firelighting, tool-work, shelter-building, making art from natural materials, exploring and investigating, birdwatching, nature trails and so much more...!

Our Forest School Aims are to: • Create a community of learners where children feel safe and valued, in an environment where we work, play, and learn together. • Create a world of possibilities, where: “Yes you can,” is the answer. • Foster a love of the outdoors and natural environment. • Encourage curiosity, exploration and creativity. • Learn to recognise and manage risk. • Increase co-operation, communication and awareness of others. • Empower children to make their own choices, to initiate and drive their own learning. • Create time, space, and freedom to play. Our rules at Forest School are simple and few: “Look after yourself, look after each other and look after nature.” Forest School is all part of our offer to provide our children with the very best education and enable each and every one of them to flourish whilst in our care. #WeareEastHunsburyPrimary #brillianceisourminimumstandard

A day in the life of an East Hunsbury Litter Picker

W

hen we were house hunting, the first things that attracted us to East Hunsbury were the green spaces and the amenities. Great for convenience and no excuse to drive everywhere. Unfortunately, where there are shops and community areas, litter can accumulate and open spaces surrounded by hedges are the perfect places for it to get caught up. Luckily, in Hunsbury, there is an active Litter Picking community that is well supported by the Parish Council, which provides all the equipment necessary to get started. Regular community litter picks are organised via social media with a meet up point and time signposted. As the saying goes, many hands make light work, and before long the area is spotless again and we regroup to compare notes and report any big or unusual finds. Personal highlights are a sofa, washing line and barbecue! There is often a reward of a drink and snack provided by local businesses such as Tesco and The Collingtree pub, or families with keen bakers at the helm, giving a great community feel! Although the Litter Picking groups arrange community meet ups, there is nothing to stop individuals from doing a spot of litter picking whenever they have time. It is always a good motivator to get the whole family involved and give a purpose to a healthy walk. We have never been on a litter pick where we haven’t received words of encouragement and gratitude, a beep of a horn or a wave from thankful and supportive members of the community. To make it more fun,

To make the litter picking more fun this family have a 'Leaderboard'

we have a family ‘Leaderboard’ of the cleanest roads and a ‘Street of Shame’ that we compare each time we go out and about. If you would like to join in with this simple but effective initiative, please look us up on Facebook and visit the Parish Council office at the library. We are a friendly and welcoming bunch who would love to see new faces! East Hunsbury Parish Council have a stock of litter picking equipment and bags. West Northamptonshire Council collect the precept on our behalf through your Council Tax, together with the money they collect for other organisations for services that benefit the whole of West Northamptonshire such as Police and Fire Services. All of the different elements that make up your Council Tax will be shown on your bill, including the proportion of your bill that goes to the parish council. We believe that open communication is key to maintaining the trust and understanding between the council and the community, and in this spirit, we would like to share how the parish council agrees upon its budget and precept demand, and why we have made certain decisions for the 2024/25 financial year. Budgeting for the community's needs is a process that involves careful consideration and thoughtful planning. The parish council is committed to delivering services and organising various activities and events that enhance the quality of life in East Hunsbury but are also mindful of the current economic situation and the financial pressures on the community, together with the increasing costs faced by the parish council. For the year 2024/25 the Parish Council has agreed a total budget expenditure £385,991, with a precept demand of £327,796. This decision was reached after thorough deliberation and analysis of the work we already do, and future need and aspirations. It is important to note that this budget increase is a strategic move to ensure the continuity of the excellent services and events that our residents have come to enjoy. 22

Whether it's maintaining our green spaces, supporting local events, or enhancing community facilities, this budget allocation is an investment in the continued growth and vitality of our parish. We want to ensure that residents are aware of the impact of this budget on their individual contributions. Using these figures, a property in Band D will pay £94.82 towards the precept - that's around 26 pence a day. As we move forward into the 2024/25 financial year, East Hunsbury Parish Council remains dedicated to transparency, community engagement, and responsible financial stewardship. We invite you to join us in shaping the future of our community and appreciate your continued support in making East Hunsbury a better place to live, work, and visit.

The Parish Council has a key role to play in maintaining and improving the local area and engaging the community in its various projects

Natural Flood Mitigation Works – Penvale Park

W

e are sure that many residents have noticed the works underway in Penvale Park. These works began in January to create natural flood mitigation measures which will help with the risk of surface water flooding. They are part of a package of measures designed to build resilience against flooding in our parish. The works carried out so far, include the creation of an earth bund to aid with water storage, and some reprofiling which will direct water into the brook. The path has been slightly moved and raised creating a dry and firm surface to walk on. The nature of the works means that the park is now very muddy but come spring we will be able to grass seed the reprofiled area so that it can be walked, played, and sat on!

Further works to come

As we get into Spring, and once the toads have left the brook, further works will be carried out to dig out the brook to allow it to hold more water and aid flow, and leaky dams will be constructed further down stream to slow the flow of water in the brook – helping to build resilience against flooding. 24

How it was looking in Penvale Park before the work started (above) and halfway through the work (main image)

Once the main scope of the works are complete we will be looking to carry out planting and seed sowing, making the bund a butterfly bank to encourage more pollinators in the park. This element of the project will be organised by RAIN with local schools and volunteers taking part.

Find out more Risk of surface water flooding is an issue for our community. To find out more about flood resilience take a look at the RAIN website: www.rainnorthants.co.uk

How to get a GP appointment

D

anes Camp PPG is the link between the Practice and its’ Patients and tries at all times to work for your benefit. One area that we have recently been working with the Practice on is Patient’s access to appointments and services. Our work shows that most Patients try to contact the Practice by telephone. First thing in the morning is a busy time and you can often end up being placed in a queue because a lot of other people are all trying to do the same thing. The Practice wants to avoid this problem. In the near future they will be installing a new, cloud based telephone system (CBT), designed to eliminate the queues by allowing callers to select their desired service without having to route through Reception. In time that should help everyone. Sometimes it is difficult to fit an appointment to see a Doctor into your work schedule. If this is a problem you face, have you considered an on-line service? Danes Camp Medical Centre has partnered with LIVI®, a service endorsed by the NHS, to make this possible. LIVI® can be accessed on a mobile phone (via the LIVI® app) or on a laptop (at www.livi.co.uk/nhs-appointments/) 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They have access to your NHS records, the same as Danes Camp Medical Centre and your appointment will be in the form of a video call with a qualified GP. If you just want a repeat prescription, you can do that on the NHS app. Once registered with your 28

NHS details, you can also access your own medical history and check a problem with either NHS111 or your GP Practice via another service, AccuRX®. AccuRX® is basically a text messaging system, but can also handle images, so if that itchy spot is bothering you, a picture sent on AccuRX® could be a quicker way of getting an opinion. AccuRX® is also available on the Danes Camp Medical Centre web site (www.danescampsurgery.nhs.uk), where you can also find a lot of other information. Following a recent review by the PPG the Practice has made some improvements to the Site to make it easier to use. If you haven’t already, why not give it a try. So, overall, there are a number of ways to see a GP, make an appointment for a test, sort out a prescription, get help or find information. In addition, the PPG also publishes updates about health matters on its’ Facebook page (look for Danes Camp Surgery PPG Group) – the latest is about Measles and the NHS’ current concerns – so keeping you as up to date as we can. We hope you found this useful.

School congestion action Dear Residents, I wanted to take a moment to update you on some enforcement action that has taken place over two days on 24th and 25th January in the East Hunsbury parish regarding bad parking around schools. This is an issue that I know is of concern to the residents of East Hunsbury and as your policing team we have seen an increase in reports of inconsiderate and poor parking by motorists around schools over the last few months. In conjunction with West Northants Council enforcement officers we have carried out enforcement and educational activity over the last two days focussing around East Hunsbury Primary School following concerns raised at this location.

A number of motorists were spoken to and educated around their parking. This joint working between the police and WNC is ongoing activity and further days of action will be taking place throughout the school year. Road safety is a locally identified priority within the community and the safety of children attending schools within the community will always be a priority for Northants police. I would urge all motorists at school pick up and drop off times to think carefully around their parking ensuring they comply with the law and put the safety of pedestrians and children first. If any residents have any concerns they wish to raise with their local neighbourhood team then please get in touch with us. Kindest regards, Sgt Danny Morris Email: NeighbourhoodTeamNorthampton@ northants.police.uk

News from King Richard Court

S

o many activities have taken place, and so much to cover. Here are a few. Remembrance was marked by a fantastic display of poppies and the silhouette of an armed soldier in the entrance, which was most effective and moving. A few residents joined together for the two minutes silence. The end of November brought the start of the many Christmas events. The HUG Ukulele Group played for our Carol singing. Lights inside and outside the Court were switched on. An absolutely brilliant display again. Once the singing was over we had hot chocolate with cream, all helped down by a mince pie. We then had the Dexterity Dance Group giving a wonderful dance display. Random Notes Singers came for a fantastic afternoon of music. Christingles were made in the morning and a service was held in the afternoon led by Sue Padington, who had put a lot of effort in making it a very memorable event £162 pounds was given for the work of the Far Cotton Boys Brigade of which Sue is an officer. A Christmas Jumper afternoon was held with a raffle, and of course food and hot chocolate.

Remembrance Day was suitably marked with an excellent display in the entrance

The KRC Christmas party

The HUG Ukulele Group dropped in for carol singing

A Christmas Party was held with Denise Hutchinson entertaining, along with food and drink of your choice. Yet again. We had our Christmas Service along with all the other regular events such as Christmas Bingo, Carpet Christingle candles Bowls, Beatle Drive, Wine and Cheese Evening, Discussion Group, Prevention of Falls Class. Ray of Light Support Group, Card games afternoon and much needed Relaxation Group. We then had a “group escape”. We went to the Collingtree Pub for a fantastic meal, great thanks to the staff. On New Years Eve, a social night was enjoyed with games chat and beautiful nibbles and desserts. The New Year has started with plenty of activity. Bringing the month to a close will be an “Evening with Olivia Hulley” and her delightful singing. Geoffrey Goswell

The Welcome Space on Wednesdays! The Parish activity room at Hunsbury Library 10am – 2pm

W

ednesdays at the Parish Office – are slightly different to other days… In a good way! Whilst our door is open for the community to come in, meet with us, Wednesdays sees our parish activity room transformed. Each Wednesday, we set up the space as your own front room! The kettle is on, the radio is on, and people can help themselves to a cuppa and a biscuit. There are magazines and newspapers, board games and a chance to sit and chill out. The idea was born out of Warm Spaces, which were funded by WNC, to help people during last winter. At East Hunsbury Parish Council, we now intend to keep the space open to the community throughout the summer. Thanks goes to local volunteers who help with this project.

So just pop in, meet up with friends. We are currently looking at requests from residents for using the space for smaller groups, chess club, art sessions etc... (n.b. one Wednesday per month, we give the space to a new art group. On those days, the Welcome Area will move and be signposted in the main Library room).
