Letter from the Chairman

H

ello and welcome to the first edition of the East Hunsbury Life Magazine – a Jubilee special!

What an amazing Jubilee weekend we had!

The Jubilee fete was certainly one to remember and we were so pleased to welcome you to Grangewood Park. After the turbulence and uncertainty of the last few years it was just what we all needed. The weather was on our side and so many of you bought your picnics and enjoyed the Bands. There was a lovely community feel, which is something East Hunsbury does so well.

You’ll find plenty of photos of the event in the magazine – maybe you can spot yourself!

We have great plans for the future of our green spaces including a community orchard and a cherry tree walk. We are working with an expert to plant heritage fruit trees in the Autumn, which will include the local schools and will further celebrate the Queens Green Canopy.

Tree planting will form part of our responsibility towards climate change, and we are committed to doing all we can to avert this crisis.

Our Senior’s Club now has several hundred members who enjoy a variety of activities.

Seniors meet twice a month for a coffee morning, but we also have Senior Strollers, an art group, Strictly Seniors dance class, and the popular Tai Chi class in Grangewood Park. The health and wellbeing benefits are well documented, and the social side plays a huge part.

For our younger residents Trilogy run a successful youth club at Danes Camp on a Tuesday night, funded by the Parish Council.

If your child is interested in attending please contact Danes Camp directly, the only criteria is that your child must live in East Hunsbury.

The Parish Council is here to represent the local community, deliver services to meet local needs and to strive to improve quality of life in the parish. We try very hard to fulfil that brief.

We meet every 3rd Tuesday in the month and welcome public attendance. If we cannot provide an answer we probably know a man (or woman) who can!

East Hunsburyʼs Parish Councillors Councillor Maggie Allen

I moved to East Hunsbury in 1991 when the estate was still being developed. It had everything I was looking for – access to the M1 motorway as I was working in London, good housing and a mix of parks and open spaces – essential as I have a dog!

I was elected as a councillor when East Hunsbury Parish Council was formed in 2015 and have served as Vice-Chair and Chairman during my time on the Council. My main interest is bringing our community together in whatever ways we can, and our Summer events are just one marvellous example of that. Although Covid-19 put a stop to many of our plans for the community, we have continued, where possible, to run small group activities, and other projects via Zoom, social media – and even via letter writing!

I am proud to be a part of this vibrant and progressive council and look forward to being able to do more.

Cllr Bob Burnell

Born and raised in the West London Borough of Ealing and moved to Northampton in 1997. He has three children all presently living in East Hunsbury.

Bob is a member of Northants CCC and umpired in the Northants Cricket League for eleven years. He is a member of Greenpeace and a life member of the Selborne Society and CAMRA. Bob is an active member of East Hunsbury Seniors Club.

Councillor Michael Campbell

I have been a resident of East Hunsbury for the past 35 years and have watched East Hunsbury grow and mature in that time, along with many of its residents. I joined the Parish Council in 2017 as having benefitted from living here so long I wanted to put something back into the community that I had spent most of my adult life in.

I am passionate about making East Hunsbury a place that people can be proud to say they live in, and whilst the activities the Parish Council are involved in has expanded significantly in my 5 years on the Committee there are many more projects to be undertaken not least with regard to the parks and open spaces, some of which are now owned by the Parish Council, and climate change initiatives.

On a personal level I am a keen open minded traveller who likes to see how other communities operate and how ideas that they have instigated can be adapted to benefit East Hunsbury. I am also an avid reader and watcher of any type of sport or cookery programme.

Councillor Paul Draper

I moved to East Hunsbury in 2016, having lived in Northampton my entire life.

I made the decision to put myself forwards as a councillor because I really believe in being an active member of my community and doing my bit to keep East Hunsbury a safe, welcoming, and attractive place to live.

Outside of my work on the council, I am a full-time carer and a student of economics with the Open University. I also like many sports, including football and cricket, and enjoy spending time with my family.

Councillor Claire Douglas

I am born and bred in Northampton and have lived in East Hunsbury since the house was built in 1989. I have been a Parish Councillor since 2017 and have just started my 4th term as Chairman.

I worked for Northamptonshire County Council for 21 years and was a Senior Budget Manager responsible for 3 departments and a 5 million pound budget, giving me an insight into public sector finance. The public service ethos has been instilled in me for a very long time!

I am very keen to promote and enhance our lovely open spaces in East Hunsbury and to do everything possible to avoid any future flooding issues. I am working with a number of bodies to find solutions to support our residents in this regard. As Chairman, it is my duty to ensure best value for the rate payers.

On a personal note my particular passion is open water swimming and I enjoy a good long walk with my husband.

Councillor John Elliott

My extended family have made East Hunsbury their home for over 35 years, and we have seen it develop from open fields into an established thriving village community with its spacious open areas and parks.

I am now a retired business owner after starting the first of my business ventures in Northamptonshire back in 1983. Your Parish Council has worked tirelessly to ensure that East Hunsbury is one of the best social and safe communities to live in.

I moved to East Hunsbury in 2001 where I have enjoyed watching my family grow and thrive in this community.

Having previously worked in the futures markets and the licensed trade, I then became a London bus driver before training with British Rail as a train driver.

Life Councillor David Lewis

My family and I moved to East Hunsbury in 1988 having relocated from Kent. We have lived in our home for the past thirty three years.

I have been a parish councillor since 2017. I became a councillor to do what I could to make a positive difference to the community and area where I live.

Over the years I have watched the area grow considerably. It's reassuring that lots of people like my family, who relocated here at the same time, are still residents of East Hunsbury as are their children who have married and also remained in the parish.

I care very much about our parks and open spaces and want to ensure these special areas are well maintained and preserved for the benefit and enjoyment of all of the residents who live and work in our parish.

Councillor Kathleen Moore

I have been a resident of East Hunsbury for 34 years and I have loved living here. We are so lucky to have the open spaces, the parks, the birds and other wildlife.

It is like living in the countryside in a village.

I joined the Parish Council to do my best to make sure that East Hunsbury continues to be a wonderful place to live in, not just for the present residents but for the future too.

Councillor Mary Roach

In 1986, and with my husband and two children, we moved into our newly built home in East Hunsbury. Living here happily for the past thirty-six years, I have witnessed the parish grow and develop with the availability of further new homes, new schools, both primary and secondary, shops, churches, GP surgeries, leisure facilities and so much more.

Our community is now well rooted and it is my privilege and gives me great pride to have a role within such a supportive and generous community.

As a Parish Councillor since 2019, I am certain East Hunsbury has a good and well respected Parish Council, one that makes a difference to the lives of the people who live here and is committed to the care of our local environment.

As for me; after a career in Education, I am now retired. I consider myself very active, enjoying my family, and the very many groups and activities in which I have become involved.

Councillor Paul Warden

I have lived in East Hunsbury for nearly 34 years having moved here from Kingsthorpe when we got married in 1987.

One of the main reasons I wanted to become a parish councillor is that I am a very keen runner (you may have seen me on one of my training runs) and we have a dog which we walk all around the estate, which means that I get to spend a lot of time outdoors in East Hunsbury. I therefore really appreciate how many open spaces we have, and I am keen to ensure that we make them all as safe and as clean as we can so that all generations can continue to enjoy these beautiful outdoor spaces.

What’s happening at your local library this summer

O

ur team at Hunsbury Library is preparing months of fantastic events and activities to coincide with the return of the Summer Reading Challenge this July! This year’s challenge Gadgeteers launches on Saturday 9th July, encouraging children to engage with science and unleash their curiosity.

If this is your first time hearing about the reading challenge, the premise is simple; children are challenged to read or listen to six books over the summer holidays. When you sign up at the library, you get a passport to track your progress and meet this year’s characters. For every two books read or listened to, you can revisit us to receive sticker rewards to complete your passport – and when you finish the challenge, you’ll receive a certificate and medal exclusive to this year’s theme!

Our main challenge is recommended for children aged 4 – 12, but we’ll also have a mini challenge for under 5s with special stickers to collect. Taking part in the challenge also helps your child’s school climb the leaderboard, with the winning school taking home the challenge trophy! Signing up is easy, just visit the library from launch and head to our dedicated Summer Reading Challenge desk.

We’ll also be hosting a variety of free children’s events that tie-in with the challenge theme throughout the holidays, so please keep an eye on our noticeboard and our Facebook page for more info and how to book on. As always, signing up for 10

a library membership is free and gives you access to books, audiobooks, eBooks, eAudiobooks, eNewspapers, eMagazines and much, much more.

For teenagers and adults there’s still plenty of reasons to visit the library this summer, whether it’s for our hugely popular Big Sing events, our Mindfulness Mondays sessions, our Crafty Bees group, or to browse our fantastic selection of books, regularly updated with new releases and staff recommendations. Our doors are open Mon – Fri 9am – 5pm and Saturdays 10am – 2pm.

East Hunsbury Jubilations

W

hat a party we had! East Hunsbury certainly celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in style, as an estimated 3,000 people attended the Jubilee Fete and Picnic across the day.

Grangewood Park played host to brass and jazz bands, our East Hunsbury WI pop up café and bake off, workshops from East Hunsbury Seniors and Schools, face painting, magician, balloon modeling, and much more.

The community stepped up to dress up, including mini prince and princesses, picnics were themed, glasses were clinked and much fun was had. See if you can spot yourself in the wonderful photographs from our volunteer community photographer, Rob Boler.

A huge thank you also to the volunteers and partner organisations, who worked tirelessly for months planning the event. We are so fortunate to have such dedication from the local community, to really bolster our parish team.

New Headteacher for East Hunsbury Primary School

N

ew Headteacher appointed by East Hunsbury Primary School as tributes are paid to retiring Head after 21 years’ service “Be kind, work hard, believe” – that is the message to children at East Hunsbury Primary School from new Headteacher Kathryn Pennington, who has taken over from Rita Arundel following her retirement after 21 years in post.

Kathryn, who joined the school as Deputy Headteacher in June 2020 before assuming a dual role as Acting Headteacher alongside Rita from April 2021, began her tenure as East Hunsbury’s permanent Head in April. Having previously been Assistant Headteacher at Bridgewater

Kathryn Pennington, Headteacher at East Hunsbury Primary School Primary School in Northampton and PE Lead at Nicholas Hawksmoor Primary School in Towcester, Kathryn is a familiar face across the Northamptonshire education scene.

“I am proud and privileged to be Headteacher of East Hunsbury Primary School,” Kathryn said. “I always wanted to be a teacher from a very young age, and as my career has developed I have always wanted to be a leader. My vision is for us to be a community-driven, familyfocused school that delivers an ambitious, inclusive and enabling curriculum in which all children achieve exceptionally high standards from their given starting points. We want to be a school where everyone wants to be because they feel happy, represented, valued and prepared 18

for every stage of their lives: the village school in a town that achieves the same as a private school.

Children only get one chance at primary education, and it is our responsibility to make their education the best it can be.”

The 429-pupil school, which includes a 47-placed specialist unit for children with significant learning difficulties, is part of Northampton Primary Academy Trust – and both share a common vision of ‘Extraordinary Children doing Extraordinary Things’. “We are one school, mainstream primary and specialist unit aligned, a flagship school for our successful inclusive practice where children all learn from each other and a community in which diversity is embraced and celebrated,” Kathryn said. “With the uniqueness of our staff and quality of teaching, together we can be the greatest school.

As Headteacher I will always act with all children at the centre of my decision-making.”

Kathryn also paid tribute to her predecessor and vowed to build on her legacy. “I get very emotional talking about Rita – we both share a love of East Hunsbury – and she believed in me, guided me, listened to me, has been a big support in the transition, and I am so grateful to her,” she

said. “The foundations laid by Rita are really solid. She has, and always will be, at the heart of the school’s DNA. Under Rita’s leadership the school has offered a wealth of experiences which inspire the children – and we will strive to develop opportunities further across areas such as the arts and sports.”

At her final assembly, Rita – who has given 40 years’ service to education – was presented with a jug made emblazoned with children’s fingerprints and a quilt they had made. She has since donated some money for a reading chair in the school. “It has been an absolute privilege to lead such a vibrant school with such enthusiastic and engaging children, supported and challenged by caring, dedicated staff,” she said. “In Kathryn, I am delighted to be placing the school in such skilful, ambitious, caring and enthusiastic hands.

I look forward to watching the school continue to improve and excel – and I know that the school will continue to make memories for generations to come.”

Blacky More Community Centre

F

or some years Blacky More Community Centre was run by the parish council under a lease from Northampton Borough Council. We had always hoped that the centre would be transferred to the parish council one day and were pleased that this was finally able to happen on 31st March 2021.

The Parish Council maintain and look after the Centre so that it is a clean and welcoming place for residents to meet, take classes, hold parties, or attend groups.

Many of you will know children who have attended Puddleducks Day Nursery over the years - you may even have attended yourself!

- Puddleducks use the Centre every day during term time and have been residents at the Centre almost since it first opened. There are Rainbow and Brownies groups, a dance school, and an art

Your community fridge

F

ood waste is a big issue in the UK. The average household throws away £700 worth of food every year and at the same time 4 million people in the UK are living in food poverty.

Most food waste in the UK is avoidable and could have been eaten had it been better managed.

You can help combat food waste in your area by visiting your community fridge.

What is a community fridge? It is a space where everyone can share surplus food including donations from local businesses, producers, households and gardens. The main purpose of the community fridge is to reduce food waste going to landfill.

Northampton’s first community fridge opened at The Abbey Centre in January and runs 3 sessions per week. Part of Hubbub’s national network of community fridges which works in partnership with Fareshare, Neighbourly and the Co-op.

The community fridge is run by a group of volunteers from the local area.

Our current opening hours are: Tuesday 10.30am-12pm, Wednesday 4pm5.30pm and Friday 10.30am-12pm.

We are located at The Abbey Centre, 10 Overslade Close, East Hunsbury NN4 0RZ. How does it work? All donated food is checked and weighed and then put out for redistribution.

The food is free and for anyone on a first come, first served basis until all food has been redistributed, or until the session ends. The amount and type of food varies from day to day. Some foods may be limited to ensure there is enough for everyone.

Introducing your new neighbourhood police constable

M

y name is David Okere and I am your new neighbourhood police constable.

I have just joined the neighbourhood policing team after working for two years on general incident response covering the entirety of Northampton. Prior to joining the police, I worked in project management for several years and I joined the police in the hopes of making a difference and I am passionate about helping people in any way that I can.

I am based out of the Mereway Fire and Police station and cover seven parishes. Collingtree, East and West Hunsbury, Hardingstone, Great Houghton, Wootton and Brackmills.

I am lucky to work alongside a team of very hard working and able police community support officers who also cover the above seven parishes as well.

I am really looking forward to working in the community and I am also very keen to get involved with community events and to meet as many of you as possible soon.

My overall aim is to reduce crime and problems within the parishes and to increase community engagement and involvement. To do this effectively I need your help, I am unable to be everywhere at once or to see everything that goes on so this will need to be a team effort from all of us. I have included my direct e-mail address on this introduction so that anyone within the community can contact me with information or intelligence they feel they would like to share with the neighbourhood policing team. This will then enable me to focus my efforts into any emerging problems and tackle them head on. All information shared will be handled confidentially.

Please note you should report general crime via the usual channels – 999 in an emergency or 101 in an non-emergency.

s your local Councillors we are delighted to be out and about helping you wherever possible with matters that are the responsibility of the Council.

During this first year of West Northamptonshire Council which has replaced all the local district and strategic Councils in West Northants, we’ve worked hard through difficult conditions dealing with Covid restrictions etc to ensure that all services have been delivered safely and effectively in our area.

All the Council’s responsibilities include services across West Northamptonshire and in setting the priorities the Council is reaching out to the whole community to stay in touch and up to date. • Improved Life Chances including supporting all residents and businesses through the Covid pandemic. Helping the most vulnerable young and seniors together with resettling Afghan and Ukrainian nationals as new citizens temporarily and permanently.

• Connected Communities - Embarking on major road improvements, shaping and progressing future highways maintenance services and transport infrastructure.

• Thriving Villages & Towns - Localising Planning arrangements, supporting community and voluntary groups with grant funding, showcasing our heritage and opening the newly transformed Museum & Art Gallery in Northampton.

• Economic Development securing £37m funding towards regeneration of Northampton Town Centre and the Market Square, supporting businesses and start-ups with funding advice and support and also submitting the bid for City status.

• Robust Resource Management, capping Council tax rises, managing a balanced budget and working hard to join up local services across the whole of the West Northants area to make them better and more cost effective.

The Council presently receives approximately £342m to run the day-to-day services for all the area with approx. two thirds of this from Council Tax. The top three services by cost are Adults, Communities & Wellbeing, Children’s Services and Place & Economy handling everything from Trading Standards, waste collections and recycling to Highways and Planning. Whilst transformation actions bring as much running of services together which will take considerable time in completing,
