Letter from the Chairman
Ayear has passed since my first Letter from the Chairman and in the hope that by the time you read this the sun will be shining (it is raining as I write) the same photo is still being used as it was taken on a day that it was sunny and warm.
Late spring and summer is a time when a number of events take place in the Parish. Earlier this month two events took place. Firstly, we had the Parish Council’s first Green Day. This was well attended throughout the day and featured a number of interactive activities for young and old and ideas on how we can all make a difference (however big or small). Local schools were involved, and it is always a pleasure to see the enthusiasm that the children have in participating.
The second event was the Health & Wellbeing Day. This was very successful last year and proved to be again this year. With the pressures from work, home, and life in general that people experience it was good to see that there are various practitioners who are able to help. These included a Reiki practitioner, Zumba and yoga demonstrations as well as more day-to-day activities. Northamptonshire Walks led a walk from Hunsbury Library, and volunteers took part in a litter pick of the parish.
If you would like to volunteer there are lots of opportunities available, not just litter picking! Pop into the parish office and tell us how you’d like to help. New litter picking volunteers are always welcome, and we can provide you with all the kit you need to get started.
Later in the summer (as you will see advertised elsewhere in the magazine) we are pleased to welcome White Cobra to East Hunsbury with their outdoor theatre production of James and the Giant Peach. Brass in the Park is back this year, and for the younger members of the community the youth club at Danes Camp will be extended into the summer holidays, as well as two play events run by MK Play Association.
On a more general basis residents will be aware of the further planning applications submitted in relation to land opposite the crematorium for 60 dwellings and the application on the adjoining land for 361 dwellings (referred to as the Western Expansion). Representations have been made in relation to both applications. Representations have also been submitted in relation to issues of Air Quality Management, the Northampton Local Plan (draft) and the Flood Risk Management Strategy in so far as they impact upon East Hunsbury.
The Vistry development at Collingtree Park continues to make its way into East Hunsbury. The noise bund is now in place and will shortly be landscaped and have a noise fence erected. The application in relation to the road and reconfiguration of part of the golf course is in, and Vistry expect a decision late summer. If that is the case, then these works will commence early 2025. There will be updates on the development into East Hunsbury as matters progress.
Finally, as in Parish Council terms this is the start of our new year, I would like to thank my fellow councillors for their input and support, but most importantly I would like to thank the Clerk Caroline and her dynamic duo of Liz and Jayne for the tireless work they put in to make East Hunsbury a vibrant place to live. As a friend form Leeds pointed out to me if you Google best areas to live in Northampton, we are top of the tree.
Once again, I have run out of space, but you can keep up to date by checking the website and Facebook page or pop into the parish office.
Have a great summer!

Meet your new Councillors!
Councillor Alison Mahoney
I moved from Canada to East Hunsbury in 2021 with my husband, 3 children and 2 dogs. We fell in love, straight away, with the walking paths, parks and just how green everything was. We loved how there was a post office, surgery, shopping centre, leisure centre and restaurant, all within walking distance. After three years in the neighbourhood, we are settled, we feel safe, we have a great community; this now feels like home. In my spare time, I am an avid cyclist and runner and get by on my swims to make me a triathlete. My kids play hockey, football and rugby locally and we frequent the golf course and the Northampton bike park. After a 20+ years in busy corporate life, I’ve taken a different path since moving to the UK and am excited to be working with the Parish on ways to continue building our community to be a great place to live, work and play.
East Hunsbury Parish Council
Councillor Daniel Soan
I am delighted to be joining East Hunsbury Parish Council and serving the local community.
I am an IT Manager by profession and started my career as a trainee in Local Government here in Northampton. It gave me a great understanding of how our public services work. In the past I have served as a School Governor and a volunteer at Northampton General Hospital.
I look forward to being an active member of the Parish Council.
cllr.mahoney@easthunsburyparishcouncil.gov.uk
My hope is that I will be able to draw on all of this experience to support the aims and objectives of East Hunsbury Parish Council particularly through my membership of the resources committee and the parks and open spaces committee.

A wave to Diana
Written by Dave Askew
Hi everyone… isn’t it wonderful to finally see some sunshine and yes, the walking shorts are on again! It is also great to be able to get back to the field paths which are now drying out. I love nothing more than walking through narrow paths in corn fields and letting the corn brush your fingers.
The walk I have chosen this time is a short 4.4 mile classic that delivers every time. It’s also perfect for a summer’s evening stroll and takes in two stunning Northamptonshire villages.
It starts in the beautiful village of Great Brington where there’s a convenient car park behind the church. From there we skirt the village and then leave it to head across the fields towards Little Brington. There are a couple of hills and a few stiles. As you arrive in the village look out for the very big Tiger on the left.
The ‘Needs to Know’
Distance: 4.4 miles (7.1 km)
Time to walk: 2 hours
Difficulty: Mainly off road including across grass fields. There are a few steep up and down hills and it can get muddy in winter, but it’s great to enjoy the changing seasons
Parking: Use the parking either behind the church in Great Brington, or park in the road
Public toilets: Pubs in Great Brington and Little Brington
Issue 7 | For information about what’s going on in your area visit www.easthunsburyparishcouncil.gov.uk 10
If you fancy a refreshment stop we can recommend the Saracen’s Head. To leave Little Brington we follow a wonderful, tree-lined, permissive footpath which is an old carriageway linking the village to Althorp House. After a while we bear left and cross more meadows back towards Great Brington. Look out for the evidence of ridge and furrow farming.
However we have not finished yet… another path now takes us down the hill to emerge right in front of Althorp House. The wall has been lowered so you get an excellent view. Look out for the herd of rare deer. Now for one of the best endings to any walk. Our path is up the amazing tree lined carriageway avenue to the church at the top. Look out for all the wild flowers that have been allowed to grow. It is simply a stunning place
If it is open, the church is well worth a visit. Have a look at the private Spencer Chapel which contains many generations of the family.
Here’s that walk…

Simon de Senlis Primary School rated Outstanding by Ofsted
It has been an extremely exciting time at Simon de Senlis since the last edition as we had a visit from Ofsted. It has been six years since Ofsted last visited the school and we were incredibly pleased to welcome the team of three inspectors as we knew we had so many wonderful things to share. After the twoday inspection, we were exceptionally proud to be judged as Outstanding across all areas, making us one of only a few primary schools in Northampton with this highest grade of excellence.
We are all so proud of our wonderful school which is filled with amazing children, staff and families. Please see some of the quotes from the Ofsted report below which will give you a flavour of life at Simon de Senlis.
"Every pupil knows that they matter, and they can flourish because of the dedicated staff at Simon de Senlis Primary School. An exceptional ethos of deep care and high ambition is threaded through every aspect of school life. Because of this, pupils love coming to a school, where they can ‘believe, achieve, and succeed’."
"Pupils’ behaviour is exemplary. There are many opportunities for pupils to develop their talents in sport, music and the arts. Pupils are supported to be advocates for each other, their community and the environment. Older pupils are role models who responsibly fulfil a multitude of leadership roles. The school is determined to equip pupils to make a positive ‘dent in the universe.'"
"There is a relentless determination by all staff to give pupils the best education possible. The school is particularly determined to secure success for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, those who have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and those who speak English as an additional language."

Plenty to be proud about for pupils and staff at Simon de Senlis primary School
"Children get off to a flying start in the early years. Carefully planned interactions and engaging activities feed children’s thirst to learn. Pupils produce high-quality work and achieve well by the end of each key stage. The school is determined that every pupil becomes a reader, as the key to ‘a world of possibilities.’ The bespoke reading programme ensures that pupils explore interesting and diverse texts that further enhance their learning in different subjects."
"The programme for pupils’ personal development is considered and well planned. It is rooted in the established school values of building resilience, responsibility and aspiration. The school takes every possible step to give all pupils access to rich and wide opportunities. Staff plan many outings for pupils that enhance their learning. Staff are proud to be part of this exceptional school."
In other news, the whole school were thrilled to welcome Northants Sings Out choir who performed their inspirational songs to a hall full of excited and enthusiastic children and staff. The choir raised the roof with their amazing singing; with children
and staff dancing and clapping along to the superb show. The choir have recently performed on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, and we all have our fingers crossed that they get through to the final stages at the end of May.
In the coming weeks we are looking forward to meeting the children and families who will be joining Reception in September 2024 and we cannot wait for them to join our wonderful school family. As always, we are so proud of our wonderful school, the fabulous children and staff along with the amazing families.

World Book Day celebrated in style at Wootton Park School
At Wootton Park School we celebrated World Book Day 2024 in style, with a range of fantasy themed activities, including guessing games, a fantasy themed English lesson and a short story competition. All learners were invited to dress up and staff surprised learners with dressing up as Where’s Wally! There was even a Where’s Wally scavenger hunt for learners to engage with, where they had to find every member of staff dressed up.
We believe it is so important to engage with World Book Day to promote a love of reading to our learners. Regular reading has many benefits, including improved concentration and memory, heightened understanding of the world and the past, vocabulary expansion, and improvement of writing quality. We are proud of our school library, the Knowledge Hub, which houses a range of genres and is open every lunchtime as a quiet reading space for learners to enjoy.
We are also pleased to announce the winner of the World Book Day short story competition as avid reader Ava from Year 7.
Here’s what Ava had to say about World Book Day and the importance of reading...
Hi Ava! Well done for your win. Why do you like World Book Day?
‘Because I love books!’
What book genres do you enjoy and do you have any book recommendations?
‘I really like dystopian books and my recommendation would be The Hunger Games series.’
What can reading add to someone’s life?
‘Reading can help you with your knowledge and imagination. It makes me chill out and feel happy and when there are big moments in my book I’m really engaged.’
Congratulations Ava!

Ava with her certificate and prizes won on World Book Day at Wootton Park School
A day in the life of a reception teacher at East Hunsbury Primary School…
In reception, no two days are ever the same!
After the children say goodbye at our little gate in’ the morning, they come into the classroom independently. They wish their friends and teachers good morning, put their belongings away and begin the day with a morning activity which gradually progresses and changes throughout the year. After registration, we start our day with our rhyme of the week and a song or two. This is then followed by a fun handwriting and phonics session – these are important lessons where we start to teach the children how to read and write.
After this, the children are ready for some: ‘Discovery Time.’ Discovery time makes up a large part of the timetable in reception and we make sure our environment is as rich as possible for children to play and learn in. During this time, children can choose their activities depending on their own interests and enthusiasms.
Due to our brilliantly big learning space, there are always lots of choices for the children during their Discovery Time. There are: stories to read, a stage to perform on, construction to build, sand and water play, gross and fine motor activities, small world toys and lots of role play resources plus arts, crafts, mud kitchens, bikes and trikes, music and so much more – there really is something for everyone! Using the knowledge and interests of the children, the adults guide the children to try new things or develop their passions.
Before morning play, the children all come back together again for a story. We know that books and rhymes are so valuable to support language and communication skills as well as igniting creativity and sparking imagination in young children.
After play, it’s time for English. It’s not unusual to find us on a boat trip to the island where the wild things are or discovering video evidence of the gingerbread’s man's whereabouts in our provision! We love to excite the children’s imaginations as we find this really helps them with their writing.
Issue 7 | For information about what’s going on in your area visit www.easthunsburyparishcouncil.gov.uk 16 EAST HUNSBURY Life
Following our English, it’s time for some more Discovery Time and then lunch. During lunch they get the opportunity to play with some of the children from the other year groups. It’s a lovely chance for the children to see siblings and try out our new equipment.
After lunch, it’s maths and then even more Discovery Time.
Finally, it’s tidy up time and an important opportunity to come together as a class once again. This final part of our day often includes learning around our ‘Understanding the World’ or PSHE topics as well as weekend news, celebrating birthdays and singing and signing with Blue Class (our link class from our Specialist Unit.) You will often find us singing just one more song or reading a final story.
And that’s not just it - there is even more! Every week, we also:
• take part in Forest School - Who doesn’t love toasting marshmallows around a campfire or jumping in muddy puddles?
• Have our music and PE taught by specialists
• Attend assemblies, events and play with Blue class (our link class from our Specialist Unit).
As the children grow and their capacity to concentrate and complete certain activities develops, their timetable changes. For example, more formal periods of learning are added, and longer tasks are expected to be completed.
To conclude, a day in reception is never the same but we do ensure that the children’s experience is always a brilliant one filled with laughter, love and smiles.
The early years is an exciting time in which the foundations of knowledge and positive learning attitudes are built – as a teacher, it really is a privilege to be part of this.
Our pledge to you and your child:
‘We promise you every day your child will learn something. Some days they will bring it home in their hands. Some days they will bring it home in their heads and some days they will bring it home in their hearts.’
We have very limited spaces still available in our Reception 2024 cohort. If you are interested in joining our school family then please contact the school office via email office@easthunsburyprimary.org or telephone 01604 677970 for more information and advice.

Rookie men’s choir stuns audience in prostate cancer fundraiser
Apopular singing project, launched earlier this year, has produced a brand new men’s choir with 46 highly motivated, Northamptonshire-based men all aiming to raise money in support of Prostate Cancer UK. The project – ‘Men United in Song 2024’ - is part of a National Programme, funded by Arts Council England, involving five existing Male Voice Choirs: Northampton, Peterborough, Radcliffe on Trent, Welwyn Garden and Worcester.
The majority of the men in the Northamptonshire ‘Men United in Song’ choir are totally new to choral singing and
performing in public. They nevertheless took on the enormous task of learning ten songs in just ten weeks to perform at a Rotary Club of Rushden charity concert as special guests of Northampton Male Voice Choir (NMVC). To prepare for their debut concert the men worked hard in rehearsal each week under the leadership of NMVC’s Musical Director, Stephen Bell. And, at its first ever concert - on 11th May in St Mary’s Church, Higham Ferrers - a ‘sell out’ audience was blown away by the new choir’s amazing performance.
Speaking after the concert, MD, Stephen said ‘What a journey it’s been. The ‘Men United in Song’ lads did a really great job.
EAST HUNSBURY Life Issue 7 | For information about what’s going on in your area visit www.easthunsburyparishcouncil.gov.uk 22
Zero to performance - 10 songs in 10 weeks –unbelievable! They just didn’t know that it was impossible! And now they go on to take part in a concert in Nottingham as part of a huge massed choir with upwards of 400 other men from the five areas involved in this project.’
Reflecting on the new choir’s performance NMVC Chairman, Mark York, said ‘Despite my having been involved with these guys since the outset of the ‘Men United in Song’ project, I was completely taken aback by their energy, enthusiasm and fantastic singing. I can’t congratulate them enough. One of the main objectives of the project is to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK in support of its fight to combat this terrible disease. We’ve already raised in the region of £3000 and our efforts are ongoing.’ Anyone wishing to help can donate via www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ great-north-run- 2024-55960 or scan the QR code
While sharing their experiences in the ‘Men United in Song’ project, these are just a few of the comments made by the Northamptonshire-based men involved:
• Terrifying and awesome. Sign me up for more.
• The whole experience has just been amazing. I’ve really loved and enjoyed every bit of it.
• My 17 year old lad said ‘proud of you dad’. Not sure I’ve heard that before. How satisfying was that?
• I'm so pleased to have been part of this whole experience and look forward to taking 'next steps'.
• This has been a massively positive experience for me, throughout.
• When we were waiting in the wings and could see the audience I felt like a gladiator getting ready to enter the arena. The whole experience from day one has been very special for me.

Local author launches debut crime novel
As a child, Roxie Key dreamed of seeing her name on the cover of a novel. Now that dream has become reality.
The 35-year-old crime writer has just published her debut crime novel, with a plot praised by book bloggers and fellow authors as “gripping” and “remarkably polished”
The Deadly Spark is a tale that combines psychological suspense and police procedure. It tells the story of an arson attack that leaves a woman dead. Within hours, the victim’s girlfriend Anya kills herself by jumping off cliffs at Sleaford Head. In the book, we meet detective Eve Starling who must establish the cause and

circumstances of the fire and whether the suicide was motivated by grief or guilt.
Roxie lives in East Hunsbury with her wife and daughter. Driven to turn her writing dream into reality she studied creative and media writing at Middlesex University and worked as a copywriter at Avon Cosmetics in Northampton before taking the leap as a novelist.
She penned her first book in 2019 and secured representation and book deal two years later.
“Publishing a book has been my lifelong dream and I am so excited to finally be sharing the story of Eve Starling with the world,” Roxie said. “I cannot wait to see it on the shelves, and to hear what readers think.”
The Deadly Spark was published on May 23 by HQ (an imprint of HarperCollins) and is available in paperback, eBook and audiobook format. It is available in book shops, in store and online, such as Bookshop.org, Hive, Waterstones, WHSmith, Foyles, Blackwells, Amazon, Amazon Audible, Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play and Kobo.

News from King Richard Court
When a new owner arrives at KRC, it is our hope that they will join in with some of the events which take place all through every month. This way they meet new people and become part of our wonderful community. Of course, if this is not their wish, then they can live their own life in their own flat.
Over the last few months we had a Marie Curie Coffee Morning and Chocolate Tombola Stall, raising £465 for Marie Curie.
On Good Friday we had a Hot Cross Bun Morning and Raffle. We were reminded of Good Friday by a simple, but outstanding Cross, along with the lighter side of Easter.
We had a brilliant and captivating talk on the Antics of the Cold War Spies. The audience demanded a second talk by Nigel.
May 1st was a very special day. A group of us met around May's flat to sing Happy Birthday to a wonderful lady, May Grimley who celebrated 100 years of age. Later in the day her family gave her a wonderful party to which everyone was invited.
May still takes part in a number of the monthly events, even Balance Class, where she raises her legs higher than anyone.
As Easter approached we had a very successful afternoon making an Easter Wreath. My family would never accept that I had made mine.
In the coming weeks we look forward to Random Notes with their selection of well known music.
The big event in June will be a D-Day Celebration along with a 1940s themed Street Party. More next time on that.

Do more with the NHS App!
The NHS is still coping with the aftermath of COVID and waiting lists are often in the news. GP Surgeries are the on the front line and pressures are acute and rising. Did you know, for example, that Northamptonshire GPs see about 400,000 appointments a month, equivalent to half the number of people in the County? More surprisingly they do this on only 8% of the NHS budget! The Service is labour intensive and challenging.
COVID drove that message home better than any publicity campaign and also accelerated change. Surgeries had to close their doors to survive and remote services were quickly developed or improved to fill the gap for routine matters - and Patients learned to adapt.
Today you don't need to visit a Surgery or make a telephone call to sort out some of life's everyday health challenges - you can now do it on your mobile ‘phone using the NHS App, or on a PC at https://www.nhsapp.service.nhs.uk/login. If you are over 16, resident in the UK and a Patient at a GP Practice you register for the service, create a Log-in and then have access to all your confidential health data and records. Need a repeat prescription? Need to organise a blood test? Need to look up your NHS number? Need to check your health record? Morning, noon and night – just tap the App! But the biggest tick of all?
When you do these things on the NHS App or online on a PC, you are reducing the load on your GP Practice and letting their Clinicians spend
more time with their Patients. And that might be you one day!
The NHS has a ‘Help’ page for beginners at https://nhs.uk/helpmeapp. Danes Camp Medical Centre is also fully committed to the NHS App and PC programme and has appointed a Champion for this service to help and support you with any other questions or queries you may have. Send your name, mobile number and questions to danescamp.k83610@nhs.net and their expert will be in touch.
This article was contributed by Danes Camp Patients Participation Group (PPG). PPGs are volunteers who offer help and advice to their Medical Practice and contribute experience and skills from the wider world as well as being a conduit for Patient's experiences and opinions. Danes Camp PPG is open to all Patients registered with the Practice.
We meet with the Practice Team four times a year, occasionally carry out short surveys to try and help the Practice understand certain issues and communicate important information via our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/danessurgeryppg/ For people who wish to take part in the PPG but cannot find the time for meetings, we also have a 'virtual' PPG on WhatsApp. If you are interested, contact the Surgery on 01604 709 426.

The Welcome Space on Wednesdays!
The Parish activity room at Hunsbury Library 10am – 2pm
Wednesdays at the Parish Office – are slightly different to other days…
In a good way!
Whilst our door is open for the community to come in, meet with us, Wednesdays sees our parish activity room transformed.
Each Wednesday, we set up the space as your own front room!
The kettle is on, the radio is on, and people can help themselves to a cuppa and a biscuit.
There are magazines and newspapers, board games and a chance to sit and chill out.
The idea was born out of Warm Spaces, which were funded by WNC, to help people during last winter. At East Hunsbury Parish Council, we now intend to keep the space open to the community throughout the summer. Thanks goes to local volunteers who help with this project.
So just pop in, meet up with friends. We are currently looking at requests from residents for using the space for smaller groups, chess club, art sessions etc...
(n.b. one Wednesday per month, we give the space to a new art group. On those days, the Welcome Area will move and be signposted in the main Library room).
