US giant completes purchase of surveillance specialist Acquisition boosts global capability to tackle national security threats

T

he acquisition of a surveillance and countermeasure specialist in Northamptonshire by a leading manufacturer of detection and location systems is set to boost domestic and allied government agencies’ capabilities to deal with threats to national security worldwide.

Enterprise Control Systems, based at Wappenham near Towcester, is now part of the SPX Corporation. SPX, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, expects the deal to generate new revenue of between $12 million and $14 million.

ECS, founded in 1988, is a leader in the design and manufacture of highly-engineered tactical datalinks and radio frequency countermeasures, including jammers to counter drones and improvised explosive devices. The company is expected to contribute significantly to SPX’s

communications technology platform.

Founder Colin Bullock said: “We are very pleased to be part of SPX as it creates numerous opportunities for employees and customers to continue our growth journey. Combining ECS’ expertise in RF countermeasures and encrypted data links systems with SPX’s strengths in RF detection and location systems, as well as its global infrastructure and resources, is a great opportunity to further advance product development and extend the reach of our combined, high-value solutions to a broader customer base.”

The business has invested about £4.5 million in its Daventry site in recent years to support new contracts for both own label lines and retailer products.

The formation of Baker & Baker as a

standalone bakery products business in April this year - following the formal separation of CSM Bakery Solutions provides the foundation for continued investment in the company’s four UK sites.

The Daventry site manufactures a range of bakery products for retailers and food service outlets in the UK and Ireland.

Chief executive John Lindsay said:

“Our site in Daventry is a key asset to our business. Recent business performance means we must go further and we have an urgent need to recruit a significant number of new employees to support our growth ambitions. PR firm thrilled with move to new premises

T

he team at a Northamptonshire PR agency is enjoying life back in the workplace after moving into new premises, a 600 sq ft converted coach house on Lamport Manor near Brixworth.

Ballyhoo PR had been based at the 3e Hub on the Earlstrees Industrial Estate in Corby but terminated the lease in October having worked remotely for six months due to the pandemic.

Specialist targets growth after opening Midlands office

C

ompliance and environmental services specialist Ensafe Consultants has rebranded and opened a new office in the Midlands. The company, based at Daventry, has expanded into premises in Burton-on-Trent after the acquisition in June of geo-environmental consultancy Pam Brown Associates.

It has been serving both regional and national commercial and industrial clients for more than 27 years. Ensafe now plans to build an even bigger presence across the Midlands, said chief executive Greg Kirkman.

Ensafe has more than 250 staff around the UK. Mr Kirkman said: “We are delighted to have rebranded and

opened the new office in Burton-onTrent. As part of our growth strategy, we are always looking to expand into new locations to support both new and existing clients.

“The new office will give us a central base for our Midlands operations as we continue to grow and develop the business even further.”

A CGI of Chancerygate’s £10 million scheme planned for Brackley

roups of high-tech businesses across the region have come together to form a ‘super cluster’ and aim to be a major voice in the government’s plans for the Oxford to Cambridge arc growth corridor.

Nine business clusters including the Silverstone Technology Cluster have agreed to work together as a ‘Super Cluster’, across the Oxford to Cambridge Arc to explore ways to connect the high-tech businesses they represent. Silverstone is joined by clusters based in Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire, Cambridge and Oxfordshire.

Bird, includes the chief executives of all the Arc’s main high-tech networks and will work to create new business opportunities across the region.

Ms Bird said: “I have worked with many of the high-tech cluster chief executives in the Oxford to Cambridge Arc over the years. They inspired me to set up Silverstone Technology Cluster and to establish the business community at Silverstone Park. Developer lodges £10m scheme plan

P

lans for a speculative 55,000 sq ft light industrial and warehousing development within the Boundary Road Industrial Estate in Brackley are being considered by West Northamptonshire Council.

Developer Chancerygate has submitted plans for 14 Grade A units from 2,050 sq ft to 19,125 sq ft on a vacant 2.5-acre site.

The gross development value is £10 million.

Properties at Boundary43 will be available on a freehold and leasehold basis.

Chancerygate, whose head office is in Milton Keynes, anticipates strong interest from the motorsport and high-tech engineering

sectors given its proximity to Silverstone.

Development director George Dickens said: “This will be an exciting development for the town. Grade A supply is very limited in the region, especially on a freehold basis. With planning now submitted, we are looking forward to working with West Northamptonshire Council in bringing forward this exciting development.”

Chancerygate currently has more than three million sq ft of industrial space under construction or ready for development across 23 sites in the UK. Agents for the Boundary43 development are Brown & Co and White Commercial.

Courier franchise dream comes true

A

courier firm in Wellingborough, which has grown rapidly since starting as a one-man band in 2018, has created a UK network of franchisees with the first one launching in Luton.

founded by owner Tony Spooner after he spotted a gap in the market for an ecofriendly, responsible delivery company.

The firm’s first franchisee is Hungarian-born Gabor Szalay who came to the UK in 2005.

Foam firm prepares for new era after sale

F

oam conversion company Technical Foam Services has completed its acquisition by a major foam, latex and flooring products manufacturer.

The company, based in Corby, is now part of the Vita Group. TFS’ former owner and managing director Duncan Geddes will continue to lead the business, which employs more than 50 staff and has provided its products to market sectors including automotive, medical, audio and retail, for more than 20 years.

TFS will bring greater technical foam conversion capacity and capability to the Vita Group, as well as access to product and conversion expertise for customers.

Mr Geddes said: “We are really pleased with the outcome of this deal and I am pleased to be able to continue working with Vita to help continue to grow the business over the next few years.”

The Vita Group’s chief executive Ian Robb said: “We believe this transaction allows Vita to provide a broader range of services and products, as well as the

potential for opening up new routes to market. Duncan is a highly respected leader in the industry and with his experienced workforce has built an impressive entrepreneurial company in TFS. We look forward to working together in the future to support our customers.”

Outgoing TFS shareholders Duncan and April Geddes appointed Northamptonbased law firm Howes Percival as their legal advisers for the deal. Mr Geddes said: “Our deal with Vita happened incredibly quickly and the team were

Rail freight hub plans revealed

C

onstruction is under way to create the connection for the 35-acre strategic rail freight interchange at SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton Gateway.

SEGRO is investing £190 million into infrastructure, including the new SRFI and improvements to the surrounding road network.

New CGI images show for the first time how the development will look once complete. The 450-acre site will house five million sq ft of modern warehouse and logistics facilities next to M1 junction 15. The first plots are due to be available later this year.

SEGRO’s managing director, national logistics, Andrew Pilsworth said: “It will only be possible for people to buy more goods online if they choose to and to have them delivered in a timely manner if we continue to develop highquality warehouse space in the right locations, such as SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton Gateway.”

The infrastructure improvements are planned to be complete by the end of 2023.SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton Gateway is expected to create around 7,500 direct jobs, with around 120 created during the infrastructure construction phase.

Cashflow: The cornerstone of business health

U

nder the shadow of Covid-19 the UK government has swiftly implemented significant changes to insolvency laws, placing potential pressure on companies’ cash flow. This article presents a brief overview of the government measures that have been extended since the start of the pandemic as well as additional considerations to bear in mind when deciding the best approach to manage business finances.

A brief overview of current insolvency measures in place: n On May 4 2021 the Debt Respite Scheme (Breathing Space Moratorium and Mental Health Crisis Moratorium) England and Wales Regulation 2020 came into effect which introduced a breathing space moratorium and a mental health crisis moratorium that will protect debtors from creditors seeking enforcement action for up to 60 days. n Until September 30 2021, under the Corporate Insolvency and Governance Act 2020, creditors will be prevented from issuing statutory demands and winding up petitions and companies will be eligible for a

moratorium even if they were subject to a prior moratorium, administration or Company Voluntary Arrangement in the previous 12 months.

In few cases, winding up petitions and statutory demands can be presented if creditors have reasonable grounds to believe that the inability to pay is not the result of Covid-19. However, a higher burden of proof rests with the creditor to establish, to the satisfaction of the court, that the debt would have arisen even if Covid-19 had not had a direct financial effect. n A prolonged ban until March 25 2022 on commercial evictions and commercial rent arrears recovery will preclude landlords from forfeiting commercial leases and evicting tenants for non-payment of rent. n As of June 29 2021, more people will benefit from a Debt Relief Order by writing off their existing debts, provided that the new eligibility criteria are met: a monthly surplus income of no more than £75, a level of debt up to £30,000 and a maximum property value of £2,000.

With the uncertainty as to how long those measures will last, it is more important than ever that businesses

informed about debtors’ difficulties in making payment. Maintaining open lines of communication will preserve a good business relationship. On the other hand, silence may lead creditors to commence legal action. n Businesses should be aware that the Recovery Loan Scheme will close on December 31 2021.

Here are some tips to improve cash flow. n Setting accurate terms and conditions in business contracts, including payment dates, interest provisions and penalty for nonpayment. If payment terms are not clear it may be difficult to manage cash and to pursue a debt if, for example, the date for payment is uncertain. n Staying on top of invoices to maximise debt recovery. It is

crucial to create accurate and timely invoicing for cash flow management.

If invoices are issued late or are incorrect, this will cause delayed payments which ultimately put a strain on cash flow.

When chasing invoices become a fruitless effort, a possible solution may be to agree on a suitable payment plan and record this in writing before considering legal action

If there is a lesson to be learned from the financial crisis in the age of Covid 19 it is that effectively managing cash flow is the cornerstone of business health.

While recourse to statutory demands and winding up petitions may not be not an available option for the time being, it is essential that companies act quickly to adopt best practice in order to keep cash flow flowing in the months ahead.

MPs hail ‘a shining example of British innovation’ Manufacturing centre has key role in development of STEM skills

A

production facility that is set to become a world leader in additive manufacturing has opened at Silverstone Park in Northamptonshire.

The Digital Manufacturing Centre utilises state-of-theart manufacturing processes, connectivity and pioneering engineering to work with companies operating at the forefront of their sectors. The centre is part-funded by the government and will play a key role in developing STEM skills along the Oxford-Cambridge Arc growth corridor.

Northamptonshire MPs Dame Andrea Leadsom and Andrew Lewer were joined by Buckingham MP Greg Smith, whose constituency abuts Silverstone, for the official opening.

Also attending were representatives from the South East Midlands and Buckinghamshire & Thames Valley Local Enterprise Partnerships, the

It is also working with industry and technology partners. Aerospace specialist Produmax, based in the north of England, has opened a satellite site at the DMC. Dame Andrea, MP for South Northamptonshire, said: “This facility is a shining example of British innovation and ingenuity, providing future-ready manufacturing capability and jobs to the UK. Investment in leading technologies and processes is at the heart of ‘levelling up’ the country and the Industrial Strategy.

Not only does it add to domestic capability but businesses like this are also an inspiration and valuable educational tool for young professionals and STEM students.”

Mr Lewer, who represents Northampton South, added: “Manufacturing has always been such a critical part of the UK economy and employment and to see businesses like the DMC, in the heart of Northamptonshire investing in stateof-the-art systems is fantastic. It is an incredibly exciting time for STEM professionals, particularly within this region.”

SEMLEP has part-funded the Digital Manufacturing Centre through its Local Growth Fund. The DMC is also providing STEM jobs and training opportunities, Mr Salter said. “We are already working on some very exciting projects and are thrilled to now open our doors to wider industry to help them address their greatest challenges.”

Leisure scheme nears completion

W

ork on Daventry’s £12.5 million Mulberry Place development featuring the town’s new cinema continues to take shape, despite a delay to the cinema’s anticipated opening date.

The cinema’s foyer, which will include the ticket office, concession stands, café, bar and a function room, is close to completion. The new public square with decorative fountains is also taking shape.

West Northamptonshire Council is also in advanced negotiations with operators interested in the development’s two restaurant units.

Work to complete the fit-out of the cinema’s four auditoriums has suffered a setback, after some technical issues were identified Remedial work is under way but operator The Arc Cinema is now planning to open in December.

he Federation of Small Businesses represents its 2,000 members with small businesses in Northamptonshire. While all SMEs are different, together they make up 99 per cent of private sector firms in England and, in every sense, we could not do without them.

people to share and recommend small businesses to visit - you can support #MyHiddenGems by sharing your own, and giving a local small business a boost. We have also launched a Recovery Ready hub on our website www fsb.org.uk/ recoveryready, with information for businesses to start to look forward, manage cashflow and make plans. n Hold larger businesses to account. Please encourage and challenge larger businesses to value and invest in their supply chain, to buy small and buy local and to pay on time.

The next few months, though, will be critical. Seven out of ten East Midlands businesses surveyed said that a fourth lockdown would have a negative impact on their business.

“There is a definite sense that there is light at the end of the tunnel for businesses in the East Midlands as long as the government sticks to its roadmap and there is not a fourth lockdown,” said April. “Local businesses have demonstrated an incredible resilience and adaptability during the pandemic but the recovery is fragile and any reintroduction of Covid restrictions could be devastating.”

he latest research from Moore Chartered Accountants shows that owner-managed businesses are emerging from the pandemic with renewed confidence, with businesses owners feeling optimistic about a better performance in 2021 and increasing headcount in the coming months.

Despite challenging conditions, sentiment has improved over the past three months, with nine out of ten businesses in the East Midlands anticipating their revenue to grow in 2021/22.

However, overall confidence remains low with only three in ten local businesses saying they are feeling highly confident about the general outlook for the next 12 months.

April Foster, partner at Moore, said: “Although business confidence is still low, these figures are an

improvement on the results we saw in our previous survey carried out in February this year. Back then, business confidence was at an alltime low with just over ten per cent of respondents saying they were highly confident about the future.”

And businesses in the East Midlands are noticeably more confident than those in the rest of the UK. 34pc of East Midlands businesses said they were highly confident in the general outlook for 2021/22 compared to a national average of 23pc.

In a boost for the local jobs market, local firms are more likely to be recruiting in the next three months than in other parts of the UK. More than six out of ten East Midlands businesses say they are planning to increase their headcount over the next three months, compared to just over four in ten nationally. Only 8pc said they were likely to decrease

Hotelier fined after felling protected trees Owner admits error in bid to stop fly-tipping

ew jobs are on the agenda at specialis electrical EPC contractor H&MV Engineering after the company opened an office in Northampton. The office, at Queensbridge on The Lakes, will house staff from across the business.

“This office is ideally located and we are excited to be expanding our reach across the UK,” said UK

managing director Asad Babadi. “Our Northampton base is viewed as a major conduit for our growth strategy plans for the next three to five years.”

The company works with clients in sectors including utilities, renewables, construction and data centres. H&MV Engineering is part of a global brand, with offices in Ireland, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.

he owner of a grade II listed hotel and restaurant has been ordered to pay £4,471 in fines and costs after allowing protected trees on his property to be cut down.

Mahmoud Keder Agha-Hjrous, owner of The French Partridge in Horton pleaded guilty to two offences under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 at Northampton Magistrates’ Court.

The hearing followed an investigation by planning enforcement officers who are now part of West Northamptonshire Council.

The court heard that Mr Agha-Hjrous had employed a contractor to clear a patch of land in front of the hotel which had been subject to fly-tipping. However, he had presumed falsely that, if any trees had to be felled, the contractor would seek the necessary permissions if they were subject to Tree Preservation Orders. Through his solicitor, Mr Agha-Hjrous agreed that he had made an error.

Care firm admits dumping waste

After the hearing Cllr Rebecca Breese, WNC’s cabinet member for strategic planning, built environment and rural affairs, said: “Trees are an important part of our environment and our communities so we have laws which allow us to protect them.

“In this case not only were the trees part of a prominent landmark on the main road through the village but they also acted as a noise and visual buffer between homes and the road.”

Fines for damaging trees, hedges, shrubs or bushes protected by a Tree Preservation Order can range from £2,500 to £20,000. The landowner is obliged to replace the lost trees at their own cost.

“It is a mistake we could not overlook and I would urge landowners to contact us if they are in any doubt over the status of a tree before they allow any work to be carried out on them,” said Cllr Breese.

Profad Care Agency admitted flytipping waste including confidential and personal information on Queen Street in Rushden.

Council officers were called to deal with around 20 bags of waste which had been left on Queen Street in November 2019. Their investigations led to Profad Care Agency, which provides care for disabled and vulnerable clients in their own homes.

Officers spoke to the company, who were unaware of the correct disposal arrangements.

A second incident in February 2020 involved material including sensitive and confidential papers related to the vulnerable individuals in Profad’s care and confidential employee information.

The company’s director and secretary Damilola Adeniyi pleaded guilty on behalf of the company at Wellingborough Magistrates Court. Profad Care Agency was fined £1,000 and ordered t to pay costs of £500.18 and a victim surcharge of £100.

Having worked in PR for more than 19 years across in-house and freelance roles,

Warm up for winter: The energy-efficient solution to the rising cost of heating

W

ith the summer drawing to a close, heat of a different kind needs to be thought about now. The heat that will keep our business premises and homes warm during the winter months.

Pub prepares for the national spotlight

BID promotes ‘a brilliant place with a fascinating story to tell’ Art trail highlights heritage in campaign to revive town centre

V

inyl window displays charting scenes from the rich history of Northampton have been installed in vacant shop units in the town centre.

The murals were originally designed by the renowned theatrical designer Thomas Osborne Robinson and displayed in the Grosvenor Centre from 1976 to 1999.

They were subsequently presented to the University of Northampton on indefinite loan following the centre’s redevelopment in 1999 and have now been brought back to life by Northampton town centre Business Improvement District as part of plans to enhance the visitor experience.

The displays form an art trail around the town centre across six vacant units. It has been funded by the BID in partnership with Grosvenor Shopping, as part of a campaign to improve the look and feel of the town’s main shopping streets.

Mark Mullen BID operations manager Mark Mullen said: “The heritage and proud history of Northampton is something to be celebrated. It is a brilliant place with a fascinating story to tell and we wanted to bring that story to life for visitors to the town centre.

“For many shoppers, Thomas Osborne Robinson’s mural was part and parcel of any visit to the Grosvenor Centre so we are thrilled to be bringing it back to the town centre in a new format, brightening up empty shop fronts and improving the look of our streets.

“The art trail is further proof of our efforts to work together with businesses to get the town looking its best, helping

His association with the Northampton School of Art began as a student in the 1920s and culminated in the donation of the Osborne Robinson Poster Collection in the 1970s. He began work on the Grosvenor Centre Mural, a series of 11 wooden panels depicting scenes from the history of Northampton, in 1973. A blend of group discussion and structured learning, the Peer Networks programme is an opportunity for business

During the final meeting, each group member will draw up their individual Action Plan, based on what they have learned during the course of the programme.

On top of this, each participant gets two 90-minute one-to-one sessions; the first during weeks one and two and the second during weeks three and four. Each group member will then receive a final 30-minute one-to-one catch-up session before the Action Plans cohort meeting.

This marks the end of the structured Peer Networks cohort. However, as the participants implement their

actions plans and take their businesses to the next level, the group members can continue to stay in touch with each other. By doing so, they can carry on providing and receiving the support, advice, knowledge and accountability that they each benefited from during the course of the programme.

£11m automation investment meets boom in demand New system boosts efficiency at £60m plant

logistics provider is to spend £11 million bringing in state-of-theart automation systems to its facility at Corby.

Europa Warehouse, part of the Europa Worldwide Group, is working with German company psb intralogistics GmbH to implement the new automation technology at its plant in Plantation Lane.

Europa completed the £60 million facility last year, doubling its logistics portfolio. Now Europa is preparing a major investment in automated systems - the first at one of Europa’s facilities.

The new technology will create increased efficiencies for Europa’s customers, including e-commerce and blue chip online retailers most of which have experienced vast growth following the e-commerce boom.

The new automation includes the use of goods-to-person technology

to eliminate time-consuming and unproductive activities, said Europa Warehouse logistics director Maria Torrent March.

“After a whirlwind year in 2020 where resources within logistics companies were pushed to their limits, we are delighted to announce a major investment into automation at our largest warehouse in Corby,” she added. “The new technology will allow us to fulfil our commitment to our customers, improving efficiencies to cater for the increase in demand.”

Europa Warehouse provides services including e-commerce fulfilment, production services, inventory management, packing, labelling, special deliveries, final assembly, quality control and critical parts management. The anticipated efficiencies include an automated storage and retrieval system enabling Europa to pick up 136,000

‘Significant’ interest as scheme nears completion

he steel frames are erected and the work to clad the units is under way. Warmflame D e v e l o p m e n t ’s i n d u s t r i a l scheme is gathering apace at WD.BOXHUB moulton park.

The scheme, a total 58,913 sq ft of industrial and warehouse space in nine units, is on schedule to complete in mid-November.

Already interest from potential

tenants has been “significant”, say agents Prop-Search. Three of the units are already under offer and solicitors have been instructed.

The world of planning never stands still: The verdict on the government’s amendments to the National Planning Policy Framework

Planning changes prioritise quality and environment

K

ey changes by the government to the National Planning Policy Framework

have seen a greater focus on building design, quality and the environment.

The NPPF was first launched in 2012 and sets out the government’s planning policies for England and how these are expected to be applied. It must be followed by councils when they prepare

local plans, against which local planning applications are judged.

The main changes in the 75-page framework include: Longer-term plans by councils. Strategic policies

should look ahead over a minimum 15-year period from adoption, to anticipate and respond to longterm requirements and opportunities. Where largerscale developments are taking place, policies should be set within a vision that looks further ahead to at least 30 years.

Restricted use of Article 4 directions. Local councils should only use Article 4 directions to prevent the conversion of non-residential property to homes under permitted development rights if it is ‘necessary to avoid wholly unacceptable adverse impacts’. It must also apply to the smallest geographical area, where possible. The revised framework states it is unlikely an Article 4 direction could now extend to a whole town centre.

It will be necessary for local councils to respond positively Model Design and National Design Code. These national documents should be used to guide decisions on applications in the absence of locally produced design guides or design codes.

Flood risk classification.

This categorises different types of development into Essential Infrastructure, Highly Vulnerable, More Vulnerable, Less Vulnerable and Water Compatible Development

Tree planting. Planning policies and decisions should ensure new streets are treelined, and opportunities should be taken to incorporate trees elsewhere within the development. Trees within development sites should be retained where possible.

Protection of historic statues. In applications wishing to remove or alter a historic statue, local planning authorities should have regard to the importance of their retention in situ and, where appropriate, of explaining their historic and social context rather than removal.

Creation of design codes.

All local planning authorities must create design codes in line with the National

‘It is good to see new occupiers having the bravery to start in the town’

I

n the commercial property market, business is starting to take up again after 18 months of turmoil.

Kettering, like many towns, has seen a slow return in commercial units being occupied. Industrial stock has been hard to come by with a growing number of enquiries but not enough availability to meet them. As a result, competition is fierce, with multiple offers often being received for the same units.

Berrys commercial agent Kevin O’Dell said: “We have seen several offers being received for the same units at Telford Way, with other sites such as Cransley Park showing the 50,000 and 70,000 sq ft units as under offer and at least one of the 25,000 sq ft units let recently.

“There are sites available, such as Pytchley Lodge Road which has some larger 20,000ft plus units available with yard space and two more light industrial units remaining at Trafalgar Road. However, if you require space do not delay getting in touch as demand is rapidly outstripping supply.”

One of the biggest casualties of the

pandemic has been the office market.

Although many office workers continue to work from home or have adopted a more flexible working policy, office space is slowly being taken up again. Space at Brooklands Court has received greater interest in the past two months than in the previous 12 and occupiers from a range of sectors are actively seeking premises, said Mr O’Dell.

Availability for offices remains high in Kettering but may start to tighten, Mr O’Dell warned. Berrys has put under offer two small office units at Cherry Hall Road near the Police Hub, The Coach House in Rothwell next to Woodlands, a first-floor suite at Bath Road in the Timsons Business Centre and joint agents have placed Unit 3 Brooklands Court under offer.

Offices are also under offer in Thrapston and Stuart House, Corby.

Retail is another hard-hit area. The larger retail brands continue to focus on their online offering, out of town retail parks or larger towns and cities with a guaranteed footfall. Many larger units in Kettering remain vacant, including the former Bon

Marche, Burtons, M&S and New Look - all over 2,500 sq ft. Kettering continues to lose the larger names but welcome more independent retailers. “It is good to see many new occupiers having the bravery to start a business in the town,” said Mr O’Dell. “Hopefully, some of these independent retailers can grow into household names in Kettering like Jamie Cooper who has established himself through hard work and innovative marketing.”

Berrys still has retail units such as 48 High Street next to Nationwide, Bon Marche and New Look with first-floor space of 2,500 sq ft available at 57-61 High St above Greggs, Ladbrokes and VPZ. Rental is £1,250 per month.

Kettering has suffered like the rest of the UK but interest has risen significantly across all sectors, stock is low and there is not as much available as it may seem once you drill down your own specific requirements and preferred locations, Mr O’Dell said. n Berrys provides both agency and valuation advice. Nursery firm secures £7.5m funding deal Expansion plans on the table after triple acquisition

rowth is on the agenda for a group of children’s nurseries after it acquired three new businesses in Cambridgeshire The one-off deal takes the portfolio of Kettering-based Kindred Education to 21 after it completed the purchase of nurseries in Huntingdon, St Ives and Girton.

The deal was supported by a £7.5 million funding package from bank Santander, which will also support Kindred education’s future acquisition strategy. Kindred already has nurseries in London, Essex, Bournemouth and Salisbury.

It is planning major expansion over the next five years. It is looking to acquire 30 new nurseries and expand its staff from 450 to 750.

Chief executive Ruth Pimentel said: “Santander UK quickly proved invaluable when it came to supporting

Kindred Nurseries, whose head office is in Kettering, has plans to more than double in size over the next five years our growth plans, with its strong expertise in the nursery sector and knowledge of the challenges we would face with acquisitions.

“The bank’s help and guidance are beginning to open many opportunities for us and we are excited to be growing into a sizable nursery group with Santander UK right beside us.”

2015 and currently runs a total 18 nurseries. torytelling is an incredibly powerful PR tool. Sharing a personal story or journey that resulted in a new business venture, innovative product or award win will always engage the media and its audience.

While statistic-led stories and survey results will always have a place on the news agenda, there is a growing trend for personal stories in the media and in marketing materials and other platforms such as podcasts, blogs, vlogs and social media.

When blogs emerged as a chance to journal an experience or share knowledge or opinions, they were seen as revolutionary as they were a more informal way of writing and it gave people a platform to publish their own articles. As time has evolved, the way we market ourselves has become more personal through the daily use of social media, which gives us a ‘behind the scenes’ glimpse into the lives of the people we follow in various forms - text, photos, video, audio, the list goes on.

We have even seen the rise of the ‘personal brand’ and becoming an influencer is a job role.

A word of caution though.

Sometimes posting on social media when you feel emotional might not be the best thing to do.

But there is definitely a place for using emotions in your PR and marketing to connect with your audience. Why do you do what you do? Who are you helping and how? Why is there a need for your products or services? What have your learned as part of your journey?

Could you offer valuable advice to anyone who is a few steps behind you? Why does your business support a particular charity?

Think about how you could connect with your audience and potential customers on an emotional level. Do not be afraid to bring your personal life experiences into your business communications if they are relevant. They could really help bring your message home.

Mental health support that packs a punch U niversity academics are set to give better mental health support for their students and members of the community after getting ‘in the ring’ with a boxing charity.

The first group of people to go through the Frank Bruno Foundation’s health and wellbeing programme went to the Waterside campus of University of Northampton as part of their FBF learning.

The Foundation provides a 12week programme of exercise, advice and coaching for those who are struggling with their mental health and/or might be at risk of gang and crime influence.

Lecturers from Children’s and Young People’s Nursing gave workshops and discussion forums to support FBF’s work by helping the attendees understand skills of basic life support and first aid.

The academics spoke about their professions and gave tips about dealing with common physical injuries such as fractures and burns to help the participants gain awareness of the initial management of accidents and injuries. They also spent part of the day demonstrating essential skills that could help save a life, such as what to do if

someone is choking and giving resuscitation.

The event is the first of several planned collaborations between the university’s Children and Young People’s and Mental Health Nursing team and the Foundation.

Bally Sandhu, senior lecturer in children’s nursing, leading the team behind developing the working arrangement with FBF, said: “We have been in talks for the past three months with the Frank Bruno Foundation to understand how we can support those persons undertaking the first 12 programme to develop skills in steering themselves away from a previously difficult period in their lives.

“We have just kicked off with what I hope will be the start of a relationship

with the foundation which perfectly illustrates what we do at the university. That is using our expertise and knowledge to help people to help themselves and supporting community projects and charities.

“This collaboration with the foundation is exciting because as there will be ample opportunities to give UoN nursing students an ever better learning experience. Nursing is such a rewarding profession but not without its pressures and at Northampton we are committed to ensuring our students have the best support we can give them.

“This includes making sure their mental health is ‘tip-top’ so having the Frank Bruno Foundation ‘in the ring’ as we support their programme should make for many winning bouts.”

aCancer charity The Lewis Foundation has received a £720 donation from medical equipment manufacturer ASAP Innovations.

The money will go towards provision of care packages for adult cancer patients in the area. The Milton Keynes-based company has also provided protective gloves for the charity’s volunteers.

The Lewis Foundation, based in Northampton, delivers by hand a variety of care packages for adult cancer patients receiving treatment at Milton Keynes Cancer Centre. The donation has helped to fund 200 packs, which are being gifted to patients over the next two months.

The foundation’s co-founder Lorraine Lewis said: “Adults are having to go through cancer treatment alone during this challenging time and that is why it is more important than ever for us to continue to deliver our free gifts and support packs to patients in hospitals and the community. We have continued to adapt throughout this period to ensure this is done safely.

"It has been a very difficult period for people in hospital not being able to be supported by their family and friends.

Helping us to provide a gift helps to support people from a distance and let them know they are not alone. The items may be simple but, when in hospital, they make a huge difference to brighten people’s day.”

Items donated to patients include toiletries, puzzle books and miniature radios. Lorraine and husband Lorraine and her husband founded The Lewis Foundation, which is based in Northampton, in 2016 after Lee’s mother was hospitalised with cancer and saw the fear, upset and loneliness faced by individuals undergoing cancer treatment and their loved ones. They sourced donations then packaged and delivered gifts for patients on oncology wards, donating more than 21,000 gifts last year.

The charity received a Prime Minister’s Points of Light Award, made The Independent Happy List 2020 Covid Heroes, and was a finalist in Hello Magazine's Hello to Kindness Award.

Party marks Foundation’s anniversary

rant-making charity Northamptonshire Community Foundation has hosted its first ‘face-to-face’ event in over year to celebrate its 20th birthday.

Their garden party is a chance for donors along with community groups and organisations funded on their behalf to come together and celebrate the year’s successes. The annual event was put on hold last year due to Covid-19 restrictions but this year’s event provided the perfect opportunity to celebrate the Foundation’s 20th birthday at Kislingbury Hall. a particularly challenging year for everyone.

Northamptonshire Community Foundation has distributed £17 million to over 4,000 projects, charities and community organisations across Northamptonshire during its 20 years. It has paid tribute to the support of donors and fund holders who work with the Foundation to ensure their time and donations make a sustainable impact on local needs.

As part of their birthday celebrations, the Foundation has produced a 20th anniversary book, highlighting some of the key milestones and achievements of the last two decades. Pets in the frame for charity fundraiser

et your pets posing for the fabulous University Hospitals of Northamptonshire Online Pet Show. The virtual event is raising funds for Northamptonshire Health Charity, the independent charity supporting local NHS hospitals and community services across the county. There are 15 categories, from Cutest Baby to Golden Oldie; Handsome Boy, Pretty Girl and Best Lockdown Buddy. There’s even a category for your beloved pets who have passed as you can enter them for the Rainbow Bridge award.

Last year’s NGH Online Pet Show raised £1,000 for the Our Space room at Northampton General Hospital. This is a space offering 24/7 support for staff wellbeing that was initially set up thanks to funding from NHS Charities Together and local donors to the charity.

The money raised from this year’s event will go towards projects that enhance patient care and support staff wellbeing across both Northampton General Hospital and Kettering General Hospital, which make up the University Hospitals of Northamptonshire group.

“Last year’s pet show provided so many of the cutest photos in existence, they must have melted the hearts of everyone who saw them,” said Rob Powell, Charity Fundraiser, “The event was so well-received by hospital staff as it was a welcome escape during the height of a challenging year with the COVID19 pandemic. It’s great the online pet show is returning again this year to raise smiles as well as money for our local NHS hospitals.”

Back of the net: Football tournament nets a boost for hospice

fundraising football tournament has raised more than £2,000 in aid of Northampton’s Cynthia Spencer Hospice.

Teams from 12 businesses across Northamptonshire took part in the five-a-side charity competition at Daventry Football Club, organised by the car and van leasing specialist Silverstone Fleet Management.

More than 150 people turned up to enjoy the football and support the fundraiser, which also featured an inflatable dart board game and a raffle with prizes including signed Northampton Town FC shirts.

The event, first staged last year, was the brainchild of Silverstone Fleet Management sales manager Ryan Bishop. He wanted to use his local business contacts and love of football to raise money for the hospice, the company’s Charity of the Year for the past five years.

Before the event, Silverstone Fleet Management set up a landing page for registrations and Ryan contacted numerous local businesses who all paid to take part.

The overall tournament winners were Euro Building and Maintenance Contractors Ltd. YMD Boon Architects were runners-up.

The event raised a total £2,096, almost three times the £732 raised at last year’s event.

Silverstone Fleet Management managing director Scott Norville said: “We are thrilled at the success of the second Silverstone Soccer event. Cynthia Spencer Hospice has been our charity of choice for the past five years now. There is a lot of members of the Silverstone Fleet Management team who have had personal involvement with the hospice. We are very lucky to have such a wonderful charity local to us in Northamptonshire and we want to do our bit to support it.

“This event was about raising money for a fantastic charity but also about getting people together after all the restrictions of the pandemic and having some face-to-face interaction. The level of play was amazing, a lot of the teams had been training for months so the standard was really good.”

Cynthia Spencer Hospice’s corporate partnerships fundraiser Nina Gandy, who joined the teams and supporters on the day, said: “The tournament proved a great success once again. There was a really great atmosphere on the day and everyone seemed excited to be back at a proper event again.

“Everyone who played, attended and donated raffle prizes will be making a huge difference to our patients and their families.”

Plans are already under way for the 2022 tournament.
