Let’s create a powerhouse, MPs urge Tesla founder County MPs Andrea Leadsom and Andrew Lewer have written to Elon Musk outlining why he should base a manufacturing plant in Northamptonshire.

esla chief executive Elon Musk, who has been in England scouting potential locations for a future manufacturing plant, has had a timely reminder from MPs about why Northamptonshire would be the ideal location. A flying visit to the region has fuelled ongoing rumours that the billionaire entrepreneur is considering setting up a battery manufacturing plant with potential sites in the region. His visit prompted a letter to Mr Musk highlighting the county’s assets from former Secretary of State for Business Andrea Leadsom and Northampton South MP Andrew Lewer. Mrs Leadsom, MP for South Northamptonshire, said: “Northamptonshire, at the centre of ‘Motorsport Valley’ is a global force in high performance engineering. We

have the talent, the infrastructure and the cutting-edge research architecture in high end manufacturing and battery technology that makes Northamptonshire a very attractive proposition for global leaders like Tesla.” Motorsport Valley has around 4,300 companies and employs 41,000 people, the letter added. It spends almost twice as much of its turnover on research and development than the pharmaceutical industry, in places like the Silverstone Technology Cluster in Mrs Leadsom’s constituency. “Forward thinking and innovative automotive and mobility businesses would come here to benefit enormously by being so near such a powerhouse of research and high-end engineering capability,” she said.
