A

round 250 jobs have been created in Northampton by a world-leading manufacturer of high-quality personal protective equipment.

The Canadian-based Medicom Group has opened a new purpose-built production facility - its first in the UK - on Brackmills industrial estate. The company is already making more than 1.5 million face masks a day, under its internationally renowned Kolmi brand, to help the NHS to combat Covid.

Medicom has an agreement with the UK government to supply more than 600 million clinical face masks for the NHS. The facility represents a multi-million pound investment in Northamptonshire and brings the number of

Medicom’s manufacturing sites worldwide to ten.

The Northampton site was chosen because of its proximity to the NHS supply depot in Daventry. It also reduces the need for imports with a high carbon footprint and there are other major environmental benefits through recycling procedures.

Medicom’s UK managing director Hugues Bourgeois said the new manufacturing and warehouse facility in Northampton is a significant step forward in the UK’s fight against Covid.

he acquisition of a consultancy in Worcester is the fourth in six years for a fast-expanding human resources specialist.

HR Solutions has completed the purchase of Cherington HR. It follows similar deals for Milton Keynes-based Crispin Rhodes last year, HR Services (UK) in 2017 and a merger with Business Human Resources Solutions in 2015.

The move extends Kettering-based HR Solutions’ reach across the Midlands, said chief executive Greg Guilford.

“I am really excited about the addition of Cherington HR as Helen Astill is an exceptional HR professional and we are

keen to have her as part of our growing team,” Mr Guilford added. “Cherington HR has a strong client base, and we are looking forward to continuing to provide excellent HR support to them as part of HR Solutions.”

Panther pounces to order new fleet of vehicles

D

elivery specialists Panther Logistics has placed an order for 22 new TGL MAN 7.5-tonne vehicles to cater to the increased demand driven by the growth in online shopping.

The Northampton-based company is also preparing for 35 new TGX MAN tractor units to arrive later this year as part of its ongoing investment to support growth.

Panther, which was recently acquired by AIT Worldwide Logistics, has invested £1.1 million into the new vehicles in response to the increased growth and as part of a fleet replacement programme. Requirement

for its services has risen during the pandemic - a trend which is showing no signs of slowing down.

Logistics director Guy Burgess said: “As consumers, have spent more time at home, driving up the demand for nonessential items, Panther has looked to find ways to support growth, build sustainability and improve customer experience in order to sufficiently cater to this unprecedented spike.

Have your say on the future of the Oxford-Cambridge Arc growth corridor ‘A golden opportunity for businesses to make the case for a sustainable future’

N

ow is the time to have your say on the future of the Oxford-Cambridge Arc growth corridor.

The government has launched the first of three digital consultations on the development of the Spatial Framework that will confirm the vision for the region up to 2050.

The framework will guide local planning and investment decisions affecting the economy, connectivity and infrastructure, place-making and the environment. It will have sustainability at its core and aims to enhance the entire Arc region, which includes West and North Northamptonshire, Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes as well as parts of Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire.

Ministers have set up an expert panel to advise on sustainable economic and housing growth in the Arc. The panel will be chaired by development and regeneration expert Emma Cariaga and will advise the government on issues ranging from design and sustainability to delivery and investment models.

Businesses have been urged to become involved in the consultation. The board of the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership is also looking for the business view on its sustainability appraisal.

SEMLEP chair Peter Horrocks said: “The spatial framework consultation is a golden opportunity for businesses across the Arc to make the case for a highly innovative and environmentally sustainable future for our area. I urge everyone to get involved to shape an ambitious vision.”

The three consultations will take place over the next two years. Cllr Barry Wood, chair

Peter Horrocks of the Arc Leadership Groups and leader of Cherwell District Council, said: “The bold economic and sustainability ambitions we have set out for our region need to be matched by well-planned, long-term and co-ordinated investment into our towns, cities and rural areas. Inclusive growth, with high environmental standards so that all our residents can benefit, remains at the heart of what we seek to achieve.

“By progressing the Arc Spatial Framework, government will look at how and where we need to connect and build new infrastructure while enhancing our environment to deliver the sustainable growth that our region is capable of. To start, we must shape a shared vision for the type of growth we want to see.

“This is why it is so important for every single resident to be able to have their say directly to government on what matters most to them. How we create opportunities for people to prosper, today and in the future is an important matter for everyone.”

The arc is an opportunity for government to “think differently” on large-scale housing developments, said Clare Walton, chief executive of the charity Community Action:MK which supports the local voluntary and community sector. “The success of the Oxford to Cambridge Arc will be measured by the experience of the communities who live

there. The key to creating inclusive and sustainable communities will be partnership working and investment in community support.

“The Arc offers great potential to innovate and embrace science and technology but our collective prosperity must be paramount. We must create opportunities for all people regardless of income, gender, race, disability, age, and this requires commitment to social infrastructure. Enabling the voluntary and community sector to thrive in these new communities will help create vibrant sustainable places that people feel invested in and a part of.”

The Oxford-Cambridge Arc is set to play a central role in the UK’s economic recovery from the pandemic and the voice of business will be significant in shaping a sustainable economy, said SEMLEP private sector deputy chair Neus Garriock.

She added: “The publication of the first phase of the Arc Spatial Framework is a key milestone for all of us in the region, residents and businesses alike.

“I would urge all local businesses to take this unique opportunity to have your say on the future of the Arc - you can set the agenda and clearly articulate what needs to be in place for you, as organisations, to deliver sustainable growth and opportunity for years to come.

“The Arc gives us all a once in a lifetime opportunity to positively shape our region through its built environment.

‘A great achievement for all stakeholders involved’ Queen’s Award winners reflect on their success and urge companies to enter 2022 competition

inners of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise have urged fellow businesses to fly the flag for Northamptonshire by putting themselves forward.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are seen as the most prestigious awards for businesses in the UK, representing a globally recognised royal seal of approval. A total of 14 businesses across Northamptonshire have picked up awards in the last ten years and HM Lord-Lieutenant of Northamptonshire James Saunders Watson invited winners to Rockingham Castle to celebrate their achievements.

Mr Saunders Watson said: “Achieving a Queen’s Award for Enterprise is an incredible honour.

It has been a great pleasure to meet representatives from a number of the Northamptonshire winners who have received awards over the last decade and to hear what benefits it brought them. This has been a very difficult period for many

businesses but those challenges have also brought opportunities for innovation. These awards offer a chance to celebrate that innovation and the wealth of business talent we have in Northamptonshire.”

First presented in 1966 as The Queen’s Award to Industry, the awards programme today rewards businesses that demonstrate outstanding achievement in one of four categories: International Trade; Innovation; Sustainable Development; Promoting Opportunity (through social mobility).

Winners are invited to a Royal reception, fly the Queen’s Awards flag at their premises and use the emblem on marketing materials. The award also helps to raise profile and boost staff morale.

Farrington Oils, which produces cold pressed rapeseed oil products from its base in Hargrave, won the

Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development in 2021 for its sustainable farming practices.

It became the world’s first food producer to be certified as both carbon and plastic neutral.

“Receiving a Queen’s Award for Enterprise this year was a huge honour for all of us at Farrington Oils,” said marketing co-ordinator Gina Lewis. “The environment is at the heart of everything we do so winning for Sustainable Development meant a lot.”

The application process takes time because it is so thorough, she added.

“But the time spent was definitely

worth it. We were so proud and excited to win and that excitement continued when we were featured on regional TV to share our news.”

Entries are now open for the 2022 awards and Northamptonshire’s previous winners are keen to encourage as many businesses as possible to enter. Businesses can enter in more than one category if they wish. Entry is free and the awards are valid for five years.

Guests at the ceremony also toured the company’s new 600,000 sq ft facility before taking part in a panel

discussion on international growth and scalability.

Mr Hyde said: “We wanted to give guests the opportunity to hear from business experts and to benefit from some of our experiences in scaling up and making the move into new international markets.”

James and James has opened a fulfilment centre in the USA. Its proprietary software previously won a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the field of Innovation and it has joined the Fast Track 100 and FT1000 lists of highgrowth companies.

Business News Tech firm plans expansion as Europe market grows

Pilot probes AI’s potential to deliver competitive advantage

W

ays to leverage competitive advantage from using Artificial Intelligence technology are being trialled in a pilot project among businesses based at Silverstone Park.

The park’s operator MEPC has invested in a 12-month project aiming to help its tenant businesses to gain an edge in the future use of cognitive technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, augmented reality and virtual reality.

It has appointed the organisation MKAI, based in Milton Keynes, to lead the AI In Residence project.

MKAI describes itself as “an inclusive community of diverse thinkers” working to develop the potential for AI in business.

It has begun work with six businesses based at Silverstone Park to explore how emerging technology

can create enhanced customer experience, improved products, services and building management systems and develop new products and services.

MKAI’s executive chair and founder Richard FosterFletcher said: “The Park is a hive of innovation and technological breakthroughs and I believe that this programme shows true leadership from MEPC to help the resident companies to leverage artificial intelligence technologies that create competitive advantages.”

The six businesses taking part in the pilot project are the Digital Manufacturing Centre, run by high-tech engineering firm KWSP; the Silverstone Sports Engineering Hub; Delta Cosworth; Applus+ 3C Test - which specialises in testing electronic automotive components – electric vehicle battery manufacturer Danecca and vehicle

electrification firm Lunaz, which has recently attracted investment from high net worth individuals including former England football captain David Beckham.

The global brand is preparing to expand its premises at Silverstone Park to recruit more staff in marketing, sales and logistics to service the UK and Europe.

The business is also looking to remotely station CNC machine programmers, who set up a manufacturing process using computerised controls to operate and manipulate machine and cutting tools to shape stock material, within its Silverstone facility either on a permanent basis or before moving to roles at its parent company’s headquarters in Queensland or its USA facility in Indianapolis.

PWR is planning to almost double in size at Silverstone, said its Europe business manager Andy Burton.

Plan ahead and save the stress and heartache

W

hen Covid-19 was identified, there was optimism that the UK would be fully prepared for the challenges it might bring.

Never did we expect the virus to have affected us in the way that it did. Hospital admissions soared and, in order to prevent the collapse of the National Health Service, sadly even relatives of those admitted to hospital were not allowed to visit.

It is no surprise that this led to calls from distressed family members wishing to gain access to accounts of their loved ones who were admitted to hospital but were unable to do so as they did not have the required authority under a power of attorney.

Since March 2020, we have been subjected to a series of lockdowns which impacted on the way private client practitioners provide a service to their clients. There were questions as to whether wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney could continue to be completed. In particular, the challenges faced were how a will or Lasting Powers of Attorney could be executed safely while adhering to the government’s guidelines.

On September 7 last year an Order in relation to the Wills Act 1837 (Electronic Communications) (Amendment) (Coronavirus) Order 2020 SI 2020/952 was laid before Parliament and came into force three weeks later. The Order amends the Wills Act 1837 to allow video-witnessing of wills in certain circumstances.

While this offered some hope that the making of wills could continue, the same could not be said for LPAs. Like wills, LPAs are important documents. They enable a person to appoint another person or persons of his or her choice to act as their attorney. The attorney would assist the person making the LPAs, known as the ‘donor’, with their affairs in the event that the donor is not able to do so himself or herself, for example because they are in hospital.

The LPAs must be signed by the donor or by another on their behalf but in any event, it must be in the

Considering the importance of these documents, it is perhaps surprising that there was no provision which enabled these documents to be witnessed remotely.

While we cannot predict that we will never fall into these times again, Covid-19 has taught us the importance of being prepared, particularly for our loved ones. The gradual lifting of the lockdown is slowly allowing us to meet in person again, enabling us to complete wills and LPAs for our clients without the challenges we have faced.

Being prepared can save a lot of stress and heartache and putting a will and LPA in place is one way of alleviating this. There are two types of LPAs: n A LPA for Property and Financial Affairs, which enables your attorneys to make decisions in relation to your property and financial matters. You can also complete a professional LPA in relation to a business. n A LPA for Health and Welfare, which allows your attorneys to make decisions about your health and welfare if a time comes when you are unable to make these decisions yourself.

t is becoming evident that the large department store names are slowly but surely, leaving our high streets. In recent times, Northampton has seen the departure of Debenhams, Marks & Spencer, British Home Stores and, going further back, Woolworths. Some of these branded buildings have remained empty for some time or had very short-term partial occupation.

The global pandemic in 2020 has exacerbated matters and shifted the social trend of shopping. So where does this leave landlords and commercial property owners?

Online sales have grown immensely as customers have changed their way of purchasing their necessities and luxuries.

This has caused retailers to make decisions as to whether they compete with online sales, join the online sales or give up.

This has then led to the question: “Do we need a retail unit and pay unnecessary rent, maintenance costs and other overheads?”.

A committee report to Parliament in 2019 concluded that “high streets and town centres will survive and thrive in 2030 if they adapt, becoming activitybased community gathering places where retail is a smaller part of a wider range of uses and activities”.

The right location with good connections can attract a wide range of uses. During the last 12 months, there has been a trend to move towards mixed use or community use functions for the town centre and city centre commercial properties. Retailer John Lewis has pledged to convert half of its Oxford Street store into offices, a BHS building in Scotland is being converted into a

With the local university moving closer to Northampton town centre and plans to expand the hospital in Northampton, these applications are seen as attractive to the developers and planning authority.

This can be seen as appealing to the local university (on paper) as the department stores offer plenty of space and can draw in a more visible presence of the student community, who will in turn be seen as bringing a higher footfall into the town centre and boosting the night-time economy.

The recent changes to the Use Class Order 1987, which introduced a Class E in 2020,

is now the most relevant Class Use for retail units. In most cases Class E allows a quick and easier shift within a diverse list of uses - retail, food and drink, financial services, gyms, health services, crèches and nurseries and office uses - without needing planning permission.

From August 1, a new permitted development right will take effect.

Use Class MA will allow buildings within Use Class E to be converted into residential use by way of a prior approval process.

Locally and nationally, the planning authorities may be seeking to meet their development plan targets and welcome the change of an easy shift to residential or mixed use units from commercial Class E. Business News Founder of iconic Dr Martens footwear brand dies

M

ax Griggs, the driving force behind global footwear brand Dr Martens, has died aged 82.

The highly respected entrepreneur, who founded the original Rushden and Diamonds FC, made his fortune with the footwear brand.

Its successor club, AFC Rushden and Diamonds, said Mr Griggs had been a pivotal person in the club’s history.

The boots, branded Airwair, came complete with a black and yellow heel loop featuring the brand name and the slogan With Bouncing Soles.

“Taking its name from date of its inception, April 1st, 1960, the eight-holed 1460 Dr. Martens boot had arrived.”

Changing fashion transformed the brand from a traditional workwear boot to an iconic fashion statement and was the go-to style for anyone from Mods to punks.

But the company saw a dramatic drop in demand in 2000. All but one of the UK factories closed to stave off bankruptcy.

In 2003 Dr Martens was revived by high fashion designers reinterpreting and customising the classic 1460 boot.

In 2007 the firm’s Cobbs Lane factory in Northampton began to resume manufacture of hand-made Dr. Martens Originals.

ork is under way on the construction of the UK’s first carpet recycling facility.

Innovate Recycle won £2.35 million from the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership’s Getting Building Fund last year for the project, which will save thousands of tonnes of carpet waste from landfill and incineration.

The facility, set to be the first on Chelveston Renewable Energy Park in Northamptonshire when it opens in January, will be run solely on wind, solar and hydrogen renewable power produced at the park.

Innovate Recycle’s chief executive Joe Eccleston, set up the business after inheriting his family’s carpet firm and was immediately struck by the scale of waste.

“There is a need for change and the statistics are staggering,” he said. The UK produces around 500,000 tonnes of waste carpet every year, over half of which goes to landfill. Most of the rest is incinerated to produce energy or shredded and used in equine arenas.

“It is a waste of the retrievable polypropylene, environmentally unsustainable and I am determined to change it,” said Mr Eccleston.

Time for change and some much-needed R&R: Rescue & Recovery A Company Voluntary Arrangement may be the answer to a company’s post-pandemic recovery prayers, says Lauren Auburn of BRI Business Recovery & Insolvency.

ith the temporary suspension of personal liability for wrongful trading having ended on June 30 this year and with the furlough scheme being wound down, it is no surprise that a number of business owners are thinking about what changes need to be made in order to survive and avoid any personal risk.

In some cases, a restructure may be appropriate. However, a restructure can potentially be expensive, especially if you are considering staff redundancies and vacating units that are subject to lease agreements.

For those businesses that have not been able to trade due to the pandemic, it is unlikely that there will be sufficient surplus funds available to cover these costs.

If this is the position you find

yourself in, a Company Voluntary Arrangement may be appropriate.

Essentially, a CVA is a bespoke legally binding agreement between a company and its creditors that outlines how the debts of a company that cannot be immediately paid will be settled, either in full or in part from future trading profits over a period of time.

It is true that a number of CVAs fail and they can fail for a number of reasons, some being: n The business was not viable to begin with; n Overly optimistic financial forecasts; n Company underestimated the impact of the CVA on working capital; n Post CVA creditors are not paid, which can lead to enforcement action;

n The existing management team failed to learn from previous mistakes; n Customers withdraw business.

Therefore, any proposal for a CVA will need to be considered very carefully in order to guard against these issues and to ensure a successful outcome for all stakeholders.

It is key to seek professional advice from BRI in relation to a CVA. We can assist with reviewing business plans and forecasts to see if a CVA is the best option. ‘Thrilled to put the county on the winemaking map’

W

ine-making in the county dates back to Roman times but today Northamptonshire is more renowned for its beer and gin production.However, in a field in the village of Blisworth, wine producers have started the fightback.

A small family vineyard is marking its tenth anniversary in the best way possible after winning the Best Sparkling Blend award from Wine GB, the UK body for grape growers and winemakers.

Stonyfield Wine also received the Dudley Quirk Trophy for its sparkling wine, made from grapes grown in a single field on a southfacing slope of spoil left behind after the building of the Grand Union Canal and nearby Blisworth Tunnel in the late 18th century. The first vines were planted in 2011 and Stoneyfield Wine partner John Vaughan is delighted that the wine has been recognised at national level alongside wines from larger vineyards in the south of England.

“We are flattered and frankly amazed to be both the first small and only Midlands-based vineyard to receive this national trophy and all the more so when you appreciate that the land on which the vines now

The award celebrates the Best Sparkling Blend, a category for wines made using the traditional champagne method but not restricted to classic champagne grapes.

Stonyfield grows both Pinot Noir, a traditional champagne grape, and Seyval Blanc, a variety which thrives in England.

Blended, they produce a wine with complexity, depth and quality.

Mr Vaughan and his wife Prue manage the vineyard with Belinda Brown, whose late husband Mick had encouraged them to plant vines on the site. He died in 2010 and the vineyard was planted a year later as a memorial to him. The first harvest was made in 2013.

“The field has been in our family for generations,” said Mr Vaughan.

“It has been a steep learning curve but we love what we do and are always delighted by the positive feedback we regularly receive for our wines. We have won awards every year since we started but winning this trophy is the pinnacle.”

The annual harvest is small, as low as 500 to 600 bottles but there are 2,000 bottles of the Stoneyfield Sparkling White 2017 that won the trophy for the vineyard. It will sit

alongside the gold in the Artisan Local Drink of the Year category in the Weetabix Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards 2020-21.

“The vines flourish on this terroir and our grapes are consistently of a very high quality,” said Mr Vaughan.

The wine is made in partnership with wine-maker Halfpenny Green, based at Bobbington in Staffordshire. “We are hugely grateful to them for all the advice and support they have given us since we started.”

The WineGB Awards are judged by a panel headed by wine expert Oz Clarke and Master of Wine Susie Barrie. She said: “It is wonderful to bear witness to an industry that is now consistently producing wines that really are world-class.”

Mr Clarke added: “We are all really excited about the potential that Britain is rapidly developing, and we saw it this year. You can only be at the birth of a new wine region once - and that is where we are now.”

Mr Vaughan said: “While Northamptonshire may be better known these days for beer and gin, we are thrilled to think that, even with our humble one acre, we are helping to put the county firmly back on the winemaking map.”

Review must reflect change in way business works HM Revenue & Customs’ latest consultation on the Research & Development Tax Credits has now closed. Tax specialists MPA bring us up to date with the review and share their opinion about what changes we might expect to see.

T

he purpose of the consultation was to undertake a fundamental review of R&D tax incentives. It covered all aspects of the regime, including how the two main initiatives - Small and Mediumsized Enterprise and Research and Development Expenditure Credit - support R&D in the UK, whether they are still internationally competitive and whether the scope of what qualifies as R&D within the schemes remains fit for purpose.

As well as that, respondents were also asked for opinions on the difference in rates between SME and RDEC, how the roles of HMRC, agents and businesses can be improved and whether the regime should be more targeted at specific sectors or regions.

The government’s aim is to raise the total investment in R&D in the UK to 2.4 per cent of UK GDP by 2027. R&D tax incentives are seen as one way of achieving this and therefore it is important this incentive remains fit for purpose and value for money for UK taxpayers.

The 2017 Budget promised to simplify the R&D claim process, which is often thought overcomplicated due to the two overlapping different regimes: SME and RDEC. While SME is highly valued by businesses due to the high rates of tax relief it provides, a recent study found it created a smaller amount of investment than the less generous RDEC scheme.

One of the options available is to have a ‘RDEC for all’, administered with one set of rules but with two different rates of relief depending on the size of the company. This would certainly make it easier for businesses to understand, particularly as they grow and their businesses develop.

Another question put forward is whether different rates of relief should apply to different industries or sectors. While this could help to grow investment in those areas, it is also possible that this could provide an added layer of complexity which is not necessarily needed. Also, what happens if a business does not fit neatly into a particular category?

For us at MPA, it is important that the regime recognise the changes in how businesses operate. Green technology, the use of cloud computing, data and information technology, for example, are all playing an ever-increasing role within R&D and scientific and technological advances generally.

Extending the categories of qualifying expenditure to include these could help to boost investment further in these areas. Clarifying other areas such as Software as a Service and how it fits with R&D would also help.

HMRC already recognises that many businesses which could claim relief under the R&D regime currently do not do so simply because they do not understand the relief or recognise that what they are doing is indeed R&D. One of the key developments in R&D in recent years is the ever increasing number of fraudulent claims. Currently there is no requirement for a firm advising on R&D tax credits to be regulated. In 2019 it is believed that unregulated

ver the past six years, the South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership has invested £265 million into 55 projects designed to benefit you. By 2030, more than 40,000 new homes will be built, 22,000 people in new jobs and at least 9,000 more learners qualified across Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and in Milton Keynes.

The Local Growth Fund has been used to support business growth and productivity, fund new transport schemes and homes and generate new jobs and opportunities for students.

As the Local Enterprise Partnership, our role has been to hold rounds of open bidding in order to identify the best projects to receive this investment and determine which will create the biggest economic impact on our area.

Why? We want to make our home, the South East Midlands, a place where people want to live, work and visit. The Local Growth Fund programme has transformed - and continues to transform - the area, not only significantly boosting the economy but also creating new jobs, innovative testing facilities, green growth facilities and commercial floorspace.

At SEMLEP, we pride ourselves on being transparent and accountable throughout everything we do.

This is why, earlier this year, we commissioned Focus Consultants to conduct an independent programmelevel evaluation on the Local Growth Fund programme.

The evaluation looked at the impact of the programme on the South East Midlands as well as identifying lessons learned and areas of improvement for future delivery.

We are delighted with the findings of our programme. The report demonstrates that with clear strategic direction, vision and collaboration, fantastic results can be achieved.

Business innovation: £57 million In Charwelton near Daventry, Catesby Aerodynamic Research Facility is turning a former 1.7 mile railway tunnel into a fully controllable vehicle testing facility, while at Millbrook in Bedfordshire a new 4WD heavy duty vehicle emissions facility will test buses, trucks and off-highway vehicles for emissions, fuel and lubricant performance and climatic performance.

In Raunds, Northamptonshire, the new Enterprise Centre: East Northants now offers business units of all sizes, to nurture start-ups and business growth. The centre opened mid-lockdown, creating more than 60 new jobs and supporting 20 new business start-ups. The centre is now an Economic Recovery Hub for North Northamptonshire Council.

EVALUATION REPORT HIGHLIGHTS Economy n At the end of 2020, the new homes and households created as a result of LGF-funded projects were generating an annual increase in local spending of around £25 million. By 2030 this is likely to be nearer £186 million a year. n At the end of 2020, the annual increase in gross value added (GVA is a measurement of productivity) was around £173 million, while in 2030 it is projected to be £656 million a year.

Education n At the end of 2020 more than 5,500 learners had been trained or were mid-training. Their increased wages due to new qualifications will result in an estimated £5.9 million more being spent locally every year.

By 2030 this rises to 9,000 learners and 8.5 million local spending every year. n 484 apprentices had started their placements at the end of 2020, likely to increase productivity in the area by around £3.8 million every year. By 2030 this increases to over 1,360, who will have the potential to increase productivity by £9.5 million a year.

Business n Investment in business growth and expansion created increased floorspace to accommodate around 3,500 more employees in 2020. By 2030 this is set to increase to nearly 4,000. n £5 million of private sector funding was invested in research and development as a result of the LGF projects in 2020, expected to rise to £26 million by 2030.

Entry deadline looms for Northamptonshire’s annual business awards

he premier awards competition for businesses in Northamptonshire is open for entries.

Firms across the county are being urged to enter the Northamptonshire Business Awards 2021. A total 11 awards will be presented at the ceremony and awards dinner in November including two new awards: Best New Business Award and the New

Property Portfolio Investor buys freehold of law firm’s office unit

n unnamed investor has paid £830,000 to acquire an industrial unit with twostorey office block in Daventry.

The unit pictured below, in Caxton Close, is the head office of Simply Conveyancing Property Lawyers. The new owner purchased the building from vendor Sippchoice Trustees Ltd. The deal was secured by commercial property specialist Bromwich Hardy.

Founding partner Tom Bromwich said: “This is an excellent property in a good location and we are delighted to have been able to secure it for our client. It offers all the potential to realise a healthy return on the investment.”

The tenant is occupying

ork is set to start on new highspec industrial premises on the site of an unused car park in Northampton.

Developer Warmflame Developments has secured investment in the form of a £3.9 million debt funding package from Frontier Development Capital’s FDC Debt Fund for the scheme.

Warmflame acquired the 2.5-acre site in Deer Park Road on the Moulton Park industrial estate last year. FDC’s investment enables it to develop the second of its WD.BOXHUB schemes to provide two terraces of high-quality starter units and a single detached unit.

The whole development comprises nearly 60,000 sq ft of high quality industrial commercial space.

Warmflame managing director Paul Hodge said: “This is Warmflame

Developments’ third financing with FDC and we are very excited to get our second WD.BOXHUB scheme under way.”

The scheme will create highspecification micro and small box units to meet the needs of smaller businesses seeking good-quality accommodation, he added.

Moulton Park, one of the key industrial and distribution estates in Northampton, has attracted national occupiers from the industrial, food and distribution sectors but there is growing demand among regional small and medium-sized firms for high specification smaller industrial units.

Gerald Gannaway, FDC’s investment director - property, said: “There is no doubt that this will be yet another firstrate development meeting a crucial need among SMEs.”

The FDC Debt Fund supports SMEs in the UK that need flexibility in their debt funding structure. The fund can provide loans of up to £7.5 million to support trading businesses and property developers throughout the UK. Mr Gannaway said: “The deal encapsulates how the flexibility of FDC’s debt funding can benefit a wide array of sectors, including developers seeking property finance for commercial real estate projects.”

Site delivers for haulage and logistics sector

D

emand for warehousing and storage space has soared since the pandemic in response to the increase in online retail. Figures for 2020 and the first quarter of 2021 have seen a record takeup in warehousing space, cementing the East Midlands as a key logistics location.

However, growth has led to a shortage of commercial space for the sector and land agents expect keen interest

in a four-acre storage site near Kettering that they say is a perfect opportunity for a haulage company, retailer or logistics business.

The site, pictured, is at Cranford, just off the A14.

It includes 6,685 sq ft of buildings suitable for a range of uses and a surfaced storage yard for up to 55 HGVs. The site is on the market, as a whole or in lots, with land agent King West.

Director Ben Ainscough said: “Despite considerable

efforts by developers, there is a significant gap between the supply and demand for warehouse space and HGV storage in the Midlands.

A creative future beckons for a bastion of the past

ew plans for an historic grade II listed former military base in Northamptonshire include a mixed-use creative and care hub.

West Northamptonshire Council is considering plans for the refurbishment of The Depot at Weedon Bec. But the owners and architect have produced an explanatory paper outlining the future plans while the council decides on whether to give the goahead.

As well as the refurbishment of current buildings into flexible workspace targeting creative and tech businesses, plans for the 15acre site include a boutique 35-room hotel, 12 apartments, 16 low energy family homes, retail units and visitor centre, a 84-bed care home and 17 ‘close care’ homes where the elderly or disabled can live independently with care resources close at hand.

Architect Paul Vick said: “We are really keen to take on board the input of local stakeholders at this stage.

This is the first comprehensively mixed-use plan submitted for the whole site and we believe it will meet a range of strategic requirements and

Workshops are the single biggest business use on the site but the current round of building refurbishments is aimed at tapping into the potential for The Depot to be reinvented to meet the evolving needs of business and the local community.

If the council gives the green light to the plan, the boutique hotel will be created by reusing the burnt-out remains of the Wagon Shed. Four large buildings currently used for

storage and distribution will be adapted for other employment uses. Mr Vick said: “We know from the council’s own strategic plans that more residential care places are needed locally while enabling older people to downsize into the close care units will release family homes.”

“While occupiers are undoubtedly looking to shrink their staff-to-space ratios, they all want higher quality space, with greater flexibility and enhanced wellbeing amenities,” he said. “Workspace should never confine or act as a brake on a company’s ambitions but provide a platform for it to evolve and flourish.

We see The Depot fulfilling that function for enterprises of all sizes and at all stages of development in the years ahead, creating workspace for the future from great buildings we have inherited from the past.”

here are three new signings for Northampton Saints Foundation.

Scotts of Thrapston, TMI Foods and Meridian Audio are supporting the Foundation through their Founder15 and Sponsor a Student scheme which aims to change the lives of young people.

The Foundation’s Social Inclusion and Education departments work with ten to 19-year-olds.

Jordan Letts, head of foundation and social inclusion lead, said: “Our aim is that each student on our programmes is able to identify a positive pathway into their future, enabling them to make better life choices, which is made possible by these valuable partnerships.”

Scotts of Thrapston, timber products manufacturer, celebrated its centenary in

2020. Managing director James Scott said: “At Scotts, we always look at ways to give back to the local community and so we are delighted to partner with Northampton Saints Foundation and support such an amazing programme. We hope our partnership with them over the next three years will change even more lives and create many more positive and successful futures.”

Meridian Audio has joined the Foundation’s Sponsor a Student scheme. This allows individuals and businesses to provide financial support to help the Northampton Saints Foundation deliver one year of learning.

Each of the students at Northampton Saints Foundation has struggled within mainstream education for reasons tsuch as academic or behavioural difficulties, experiencing trauma

at home, or becoming involved in anti-social behaviour or crime.

Its aim is that each of its students enjoys a better future.

Heritage stars shine bright at forum’s annual awards

urs is a county steeped in history. And the very best of Northamptonshire’s heritage has taken centre stage at the Northamptonshire Heritage Forum’s annual awards.

Ten projects received awards, headed by the newly reopened Northampton Museum & Art Gallery which won both the Heritage Organisation of the Year and for the Best Project Under £500 - a short video filmed on a mobile phone showing the museum team undertaking installation work during the second lockdown period as a teaser for the museum’s reopening after a £6.7 million redevelopment.

Leading dignitaries from across the county attended the event - held virtually via Zoom - to present the awards, including Northamptonshire’s Vice Lord Lieutenant James Lowther of Holdenby, Heritage Forum patron Earl Spencer, MPs Dame Andrea Leadsom andAndrew Lewer and the respective

MEET THE WINNERS Best Volunteer Project: Rockingham Forest Trust The Heritage Garden & Wellbeing Orchard, part of the Settlers project at Stanwick Lakes, was developed to showcase heritage plants grown by the settlers in an authentic setting. It also provides hands-on volunteer opportunities to learn more about ancient plants and garden maintenance.

Best Event: 78 Derngate A fundraising event hosted in conjunction with Northampton High School which used to occupy the Derngate location. Heidi Thomas, creator of the BBC’s Call the Midwife series, and her actor husband Steve McGann wrote and presented the entire evening about the making of the BBC series.

Best Project under £500: Northampton Museum & Art Gallery NMAG’s video of the museum team carrying out installation work was distributed via the museum’s social media channels and on the museum’s new website. The judges were impressed by the highquality and high-impact production.

Best Response to the Covid pandemic: Daventry Museum Staff and volunteers used the lockdown to test new digital technologies to display the museum’s exhibitions, stay in touch with each other, research the collection and engage safely in person and digitally with audiences old and new. Judges commended the museum for its work in keeping parents and children engaged through home schooling and making an important contribution to family life.

Heritage Forum vice-chair Laura Malpas said: “It has been hard for us all to keep going during the pandemic but imagination, passion and commitment have enabled many to find new ways of working together and produced wonderful results that have kept spirits high both within the team and the communities they serve.”

Forum funders the Arts Council, Museum Development and the National Lottery Heritage Fund also presented awards, as did Kate Dent of the county’s official tourism body Northamptonshire Surprise for the county’s excellent promotional website Ceremony compere John Griff, a Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the county, presented the People’s Choice award for the most popular organisation featured on his BBC Radio Northampton show. The winner was

Art Works, Friends of Kettering Art Gallery & Museum - voted for by 31% of listeners.

Mr Lowther told the ceremony that Northamptonshire’s heritage is something to be proud of. It plays a significant part in the county’s multi-million pound tourism business and is essential to the hospitality sector.

Northamptonshire Heritage Forum is a volunteer organisation run by an elected committee and funded by membership subscriptions. It provides access to training, marketing and funding advice via Museum Development East Midlands and supports the county’s museums, historic houses, galleries, outdoor sites such as battlefields, churches and local history societies and groups.

Ms Malpas said: “New skills have been learned by many, especially increased familiarisation with the digital world. The innovation demonstrated by the winners has been an inspiration for us all.”

Best Exhibition Award: Nenescape Reusing a former railway line, Nenescape decorated a tunnel with a mural, inscribing benches, celebrating both the social history of Rushden and its connections with the natural heritage of the Nene Valley. Residents and schools contributed words and pictures of what Rushden means to them. Creativity and the natural open space coming together was a wonderful concept, the judges said. It ticks all the boxes that an outdoor exhibition should.

Best Special Project Completed over 5 Years: The Sikh Museum SCCYC A new museum developed from scratch by the Sikh Community centre & Youth Club in Northampton to explain and promote the Sikh heritage and contribution to Britain. The value of the project – an important resource for the future - shone through with big community support, generating a sense of pride and achievement, said the judges.

Highly Commended: Sywell Aviation Museum Operation Moonraker was a two-year project to introduce the museum’s second complete aeroplane, a 5,000kg twin turboprop. It required researching, dismantling, transporting 25 miles, rebuilding and restoring into a new Museum Classroom. This was ‘every little boy’s dream’, the judges said, a true labour of love.

Best Community Project: Rushden Museum A small exhibition, community engagement and events to celebrate 110 years of the Scouting movement in the town. It included images, artefacts and memories from the museum collection and borrowed from the wider community. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from many generations shared reminiscences and memories. The high levels of

Hindsight Award for Best Published Work: Northampton, 5,000 Years of History by Mike Ingram The story of Northampton from its millennia-old origins through to the 70s and a tribute to the late historian Ron Greenhall, to whom the book is dedicated. A solid read that includes a good index and glossary and an essential reference work for years to come, said the judges.

People’s Choice Award: Art Works, Friends of Kettering Art Gallery & Museum Creative space has brightened up the Newlands Centre in Kettering, displaying paintings, sculptures and ceramics.

Judges Choice Special Commendation: Northamptonshire Battlefields Society Despite the pandemic, the society has continued to write, model, plan and deliver great engagement with their public digitally, via social media, and face to face when possible. It delivered much to appeal to a wide variety of interests and the judges said its contributions to the heritage life of the county cannot be ignored.

Heritage Organisation of the Year: Northampton Museum & Art Gallery The museum and art gallery reopened in July after closure for refurbishment. Its many entries to the awards showed new digital engagement, collection of new material for future social historians and maintaining morale of the volunteers and staff throughout. The judges felt that NMAG is demonstrating well what Northamptonshire’s flagship museum should be doing.

eading grant-making charity Northamptonshire Community Foundation has launched its first funding programme focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

The fund aims to help build a sustainable and safe future for Northamptonshire communities and has been made possible thanks to the generosity of the Constance Travis Endowment Fund.

The fund is a rolling programme, meaning that community groups, organisations and charities can apply for funding at any time, with a maximum grant award of £3,000. The fund priorities are based on the Foundation’s series of Community Conversations and focuses on goals one to five addressing poverty, hunger, health and wellbeing, quality education and gender equality.

Rachel McGrath, Grants Director and Deputy CEO of Northamptonshire Community Foundation, said: “As a place-based funder, we are committed to supporting the global goals here on our doorstep by working with our generous donors to help tackle some of the key challenges of our time and to ensure that we leave no one behind in our local communities. “We welcome a broad range of projects including those that help support residents in financial hardship, projects that address food poverty, initiatives to support wellbeing and address health inequalities, tackling digital poverty in education, promoting lifelong learning and helping to build a gender equal Northamptonshire.”

Lawyers put their best feet forward to raise £1,500

heers all round as participants in the annual Northampton Legal Walk celebrate raising almost £1,500.

The ten-kilometre walk, organised by Northamptonbased law firm HCR Hewitsons, is an annual event that raises funds for local charities delivering legal advice on matters such as housing, employment and domestic abuse.

Northamptonshire’s High Sheriff Amanda Lowther joined the walkers, also led by Dominic Hopkins, joint head of the HCR Hewitsons office in Northampton and a Deputy High Sheriff of the county.

Mr Hopkins said: “There has never been more need for the services of the local charities we support, due to the pandemic, and while some support has been received from government, much more is needed. By taking part in the Northampton Legal Walk and seeking sponsorship from friends, family and colleagues, those who took part helped to secure vital funds needed for this important cause.”

Northampton: ‘A melting pot that showcases the positive impact of integration’

ommunity leaders in Northampton have hailed the ‘impact of integration’ as part of celebrations to mark 50 years of Bangladeshi independence.

As part of an event held at the University of Northampton’s Waterside campus to honour the sacrifices of the three million Bengali people who lost their lives as they fought for independence from Pakistan in a nine-month guerilla war in 1971, community groups recognised the positive role Bangladeshi residents now play in Northampton society.

The university’s vice-chancellor Nick Petford said: “Northampton is rich in diversity and culture, a melting pot that showcases the positive impact of integration as communities come together to fortify the fabric of a town.

“The role our Bangladeshi community plays cannot be underestimated, creating employment to boost the local economy and inspiring others with their generosity and commitment to charitable causes.”

The event - part-organised by Northampton restaurateur Tipu

Rahman - was staged by Freedom50, a new project which aims to celebrate the heritage of British Bengali people and their role in modern British society.

As part of a £100,000 fundraising mission, the group is taking part in a charity bike ride from Oldham to London, connecting the six cities where British-Bangladeshis first settled.

Money raised will be used to raise awareness of the impact of global warming, support vulnerable children and build a school in a part of Bangladesh where severe flooding regularly displaces people. It will also fund a a focus on the importance of physical and mental health.

Shale Ahmed, chair of the Freedom50 Charity Bike Ride, said: “We need to highlight the impact of global warming both here in the UK and Bangladesh and what we can do in our communities to play a part in reducing our carbon footprint. The pandemic has also shone a light on mental health and wellbeing, and we are committed to supporting everyone in our communities to live a healthier life.

“Freedom 50 is going to provide an amazing start for young children from extremely poor backgrounds in our homeland, many of whom

Charities celebrate share of £1 million fund

F Pedal power leads celebrations of hospice’s 45th anniversary

ack on two wheels, the biggest fundraising event of the year for Cynthia Spencer Hospice is gearing up to welcome cycle riders to Lamport Hall next month.

The hospice’s annual Cycle4Cynthia event was able to take place only virtually last year due to the pandemic. But it is back in physical form - as well as virtual - in time to celebrate the hospice’s 45th anniversary this year.

“We have 50-mile and 25-mile routes all planned out for riders leaving from the stunning surroundings of Lamport Hall which, as usual, take in the very best of the Northamptonshire countryside,” says organiser Sarah Denston. “And for those who fancy a different route, our virtual event lets riders choose their own distance and route from their own front door plus the flexibility of riding any time over the weekend of September 18-19.”

Cycle4Cynthia is supported once again this year by gold headline sponsor law firm EMW. Its chief executive Joy Vollans says the firm is thrilled to be extending its long-standing support of the event.

our charities based in Northamptonshire have received donations of £1,000 each as part of Ecclesiastical Insurance Group’s Movement for Good awards.

For the third year running, Ecclesiastical Insurance Group is giving away £1 million to charities through its Movement for Good awards. Members of the public were invited to nominate causes, with 500 awards of £1,000 available for donation.

Bansang Hospital Appeal, Motor Neurone Disease Association and Greens Norton Scout Group are some of the Charities set to benefit from the money, following overwhelming public support in the county. More than 2,000 Northamptonshire residents voted.

EIG’s group chief executive Mark Hews said: “We have seen an overwhelming public response to our Movement for Good awards for a third year in a row and I would like to thank every single person who took the time to nominate a good cause. It is clear that people care deeply about those in need in their region during what has been an incredibly testing time for many.

“We know that £1,000 can make a huge difference to the incredible work that charities do and we’re looking forward to seeing how this financial boost will change lives for the better.

Retailer goes back to nature with the Forest Trust

ockingham Forest Trust at Stanwick Lakes near Wellingborough is the chosen charity this year of the M&S store at nearby Rushden Lakes.

The store chooses a different charity to support each year and M&S has pledged to raise money for the 750-acre countryside attraction and nature reserve through donation boxes at every till in the store. Staff will also volunteer at the site for events and practical conservation days to help maintain the flora, fauna and community facilities.

In return, Rockingham Forest Trust staff will volunteer at Rushden Lakes M&S over the busy Christmas period and at small fundraising events. All funds donated will directly go into looking after Stanwick Lakes for both people and wildlife.
