ilton Keynes is to throw its hat in the ring as the base for the national headquarters of the new Great British Railways organisation, which will take over rail transport across the UK from next year. GBR is seeking to commission its national headquarters in a location with a railway heritage and strong links to the network. The body will be searching outside London to ensure skilled jobs, investment and economic benefits are focused beyond the capital. The search is expected to start shortly. GBR has been set up by the government as part of its plans to bring the UK rail network under single national leadership for the first time in 25 years. The organisation will replace Network Rail - currently headquartered next to Milton Keynes Central station and will award new contracts with the
Government’s new body due to take over from Network Rail next year emphasis on improved performance and services, better value fares and clear leadership and real accountability when things go wrong. Milton Keynes Council leader Cllr Pete Marland said: “Milton Keynes is an obvious contender to be the home of Britain’s railways. As well as our rich railway heritage we have so much to offer a modern organisation, as evidenced by the sheer number of successful firms who have made their home here and who continue to invest in their future here.” The city sits at the heart of the modern network midway between London and Birmingham on the line developed by Robert Stephenson. Wolverton became
Britain’s first ‘railway town’ when The Wolverton Works opened in 1838. Royal Saloons have been built at the works for 150 years, which remains the home of The Royal Train used by the Royal Family when travelling. The Varsity Line through Bletchley connecting Oxford and Cambridge was a key reason Bletchley Park became the base for the codebreaking work said to have shortened the Second World War by two years. Now Bletchley is to trace that line again with East West Rail, which moved its headquarters to Milton Keynes in 2019. Around 5,000 people already work at Network Rail’s £107 million national centre the Quadrant:MK next to Milton
Keynes Central rail station. The council says that Milton Keynes’ “enviable” location, large skilled labour pool, young population, available land and supporting knowledge industries make the city an exciting prospect for large organisations. Cllr Marland said: “We hope to welcome Great British Railway as they explore their options, to show them the talent and skills they can access in Milton Keynes as well as our brilliant urban and green spaces.” GBR confirms the government’s commitment to rail, ministers say. GBR will drive significant efficiencies in the railways’ inflated costs, reducing complexity and duplication, increasing flexibility, changing working practices and making it easier and cheaper to invest. Reform is the only way to protect services and jobs in the long term, the government says.
