Health chief's message to business as Covid cases rise
T
he director of public health in Milton Keynes has urged businesses to ensure their Covid-19 risk assessments are up to date as winter approaches. Covid-19 infection rates are “very high”, are increasing and may remain high throughout the winter, Vicky Head said in an open letter to the business community. “There is a significant risk that this will restrict the ability of our local NHS to deliver some types of routine care,” Ms Head said. “Workplace cases and particularly outbreaks can be very disruptive for businesses.” She urged organisations to insist on face coverings being worn in crowded and enclosed spaces.
With transmission of the virus at home still common despite the vaccination programme, Ms Head said that employers should request that employees take a daily lateral flow test for seven days if someone in their household tests positive. She also advised that the option of homeworking should continue where practical. “It remains one of the most effective measures at reducing transmission,” Ms Head said. Vaccination and testing continue to be critical in controlling the spread of Covid-19 and reducing its impact, she added. Ms Head asks employers to encourage staff to carry out twice-weekly lateral flow tests and, if they develop
symptoms of Covid-19, to stay at home and get a PCR test. “Where possible I would welcome your support to enable employees to get vaccinated,” she said. “Vaccination alone will not be enough to control Covid-19 this winter. Acting early is the best way to prevent disruption over Christmas. As business leaders, what you do makes a difference and I very much appreciate your continued support.” Wearing face coverings in indoor areas, particularly where people are in close contact, are an effective and important way to prevent the virus spreading. “Clear and visible leadership to encourage high compliance with wearing face
coverings is vital,” Ms Head said. “I strongly encourage your business to adopt a policy that expects face coverings be worn in crowded and enclosed spaces.” Face coverings protect both the wearer and those around them, she added. Working from home is no longer formal government advice but it remains one of the most effective measures at reducing transmission. “I would encourage you continue to enable the option of home working where it is practical,” Ms Head said in her letter. “It would also be sensible to review the frequency and size of indoor face-to-face meetings, with a view to scaling these back where feasible.”
