Wonderfully Made From the Beginning

S A NEW YEAR BEGINS, many people feel pressure to reinvent themselves. New goals, new habits, and new expectations are often driven by the quiet belief that who we are right now is not quite enough. But faith offers a different starting point, one rooted not in fixing what is broken, but in remembering who we already are.

Scripture reminds us that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, known by God even before we were formed. That truth does not disappear when life becomes difficult. It does not fade when we make mistakes, struggle, or fall short of our own expectations. Being human means learning, growing, and sometimes stumbling, but it does not mean we are defective or beyond repair.

At the same time, this principle is not limited to people of faith.

No matter what you believe, or even if you are still figuring that out, life itself is precious. Every person has inherent value, dignity, and worth simply because they exist. Across cultures, philosophies, and belief systems, there is a shared understanding that human life matters and that growth is healthiest when it comes from compassion rather than condemnation.

The idea that we must become someone entirely new to be worthy of love, purpose, or peace can be exhausting. Instead, faith invites us to see growth not as erasing ourselves, but as nurturing what is already there. Each person was created with intention, value, and dignity from the very beginning.

This does not mean ignoring areas where growth is needed.

Everyone has moments they wish they had handled better and habits they hope to change. Growth, however, does not come from shame. It comes from understanding that worth is not defined by the worst days, the hardest seasons, or the choices we regret. Even when people do things they are not proud of, that does not make them bad or broken beyond hope.

A new year can still be a meaningful time for reflection, not because anyone needs to become someone else, but because it offers a chance to move forward. Forward with patience. Forward with wisdom gained through experience. Forward with grace for oneself and for others.

This year, perhaps the most important resolution is simply this: remember that you were wonderfully made. Growth is not about starting over. It is about moving forward with kindness, humility, and care.

AKING THE DOLLARS MAKE CENT s does not always mean earning more money. Often, it means being more intentional with what is already coming in.

The beginning of a new year is a natural time to take inventory, ask a few questions, and look for small opportunities that can make a meaningful difference over time.

One simple step many people take at the start of the year is reviewing insurance policies. Auto, home, renters, and even supplemental insurance rates can change from year to year. A quick phone call to ask about loyalty discounts, updated plans, or newly available savings may result in a lower monthly bill without changing coverage.

Subscriptions are another area worth revisiting. Cable or satellite television, cell phone plans, streaming services, music platforms, and gaming subscriptions often have promotions that are not advertised unless you ask. Calling once a year to see if there are better rates or current offers can quietly reduce expenses without disrupting daily routines.

Even modest savings can add up. Saving thirty dollars a month may not feel significant at first, but over the course of a year, that amounts to three hundred sixty dollars. That extra money can be put to work in simple ways, such as setting it aside in a savings account at a local bank or directing it toward a long term financial goal.

For those paying down debt, applying that same amount consistently toward credit cards, vehicle loans, or other balances can shorten payoff timelines and reduce interest. Many trusted financial educators emphasize this approach, focusing on steady progress rather than dramatic changes. Small amounts, applied consistently, often lead to meaningful financial relief over time.

The goal is not perfection. It is progress. Financial health is built through awareness, patience, and small decisions made consistently.

Small Steps, Stronger Days Steps, Sips, and Simple Wins

HEN IT COMES TO HEALTH , the start of a new year often brings pressure to make big changes. New routines, new goals, and new expectations can feel overwhelming, especially for those managing busy schedules, physical limitations, or ongoing health concerns.

The good news is that meaningful health improvements do not require drastic measures. Often, the most effective changes are the simplest ones.

One of the easiest ways to support overall

health is through regular movement.

Walking remains one of the most accessible and adaptable forms of exercise available.

It does not require special equipment or a gym membership, and it can be adjusted to fit nearly any ability level. Whether it is a short walk around the neighborhood, a few laps through a local park, or movement inside a store or community space, every step contributes to better circulation, joint mobility, and overall well-being.

Hydration is another small habit that can have a big impact. Drinking enough water

helps regulate body temperature, support digestion, cushion joints, and maintain energy levels throughout the day. When the body is dehydrated, it is common to experience fatigue, headaches, or difficulty concentrating. Keeping a water bottle nearby and taking regular sips can make staying hydrated easier without much effort.

These habits may seem minor, but over time they add up. A few extra steps each day and a consistent effort to drink more water can support improved mobility, clearer thinking, and better daily comfort.

There is no need to compare progress to others or aim for perfection. The goal is consistency and care.

Health does not have to be all or nothing. It can be built gradually through small choices that fit your life and your body as it is today. By focusing on simple movement, steady hydration, and realistic goals, small steps can lead to stronger days throughout the year.

“H

OW DID YOU FIND a HAPPINESS?” younger man once asked me.

I paused before answering. The curiosity on his face made me stop and think.

So much of our time is spent chasing happiness, pursuing it, or running from the idea of it altogether. But why?

As I considered his question, my mind filled with memories of the work I had done and the roles I had taken on throughout my life. I thought about the people I had helped, the lives I had touched, and the challenges I had faced and overcome. At no point did I ever set out to find happiness.

Instead, it seemed to find me.

It found me in the quiet stillness of a sleeping baby. It appeared in the simple wave of a passing stranger. It showed up in the laughter of a coworker after a shared 6

joke. So when I returned to the question, “How did I find happiness?” the answer became clearer.

My life was never easy, but I did not dwell on the hard parts. I learned to focus on whatever task was in front of me. Whether I was scrubbing toilets or standing on a rooftop with unsteady legs, I chose to engage fully in the work and leave negativity behind.

I believe that was possible because the work mattered to me. The task, the goal, or the event I was part of always carried meaning. I did not commit myself to things I did not believe in, and I worked to keep negative thoughts from overtaking my mindset while I was doing the job.

The people beside me were never just parts of a system. They were individuals with lives, struggles, and hopes of their own. I wanted to see them succeed, even

when it required sacrifice. I found joy in doing life alongside the people around me.

Perhaps that was the key.

Enjoy what you do, and do it well. Know your purpose and remain rooted in it. Slow down just enough to let happiness catch up, instead of chasing it endlessly like a dog chasing its tail.

So how did I find happiness?

I stopped long enough to recognize it when it came into view.

Taking Care of Your Smile, One Habit at a Time

S THE NEW YEAR BEGINS many people focus on fresh starts healthier routines and better habits. Dental health is often overlooked yet it plays a major role in overall well being and quality of life.

One of the most common mistakes people make at home is not brushing long enough or thoroughly enough. Brushing should take at least two full minutes and be done twice a day. Many people fall short without realizing it. Cleaning between the teeth is just as important. A toothbrush alone cannot reach below the gumline where bacteria and food particles collect. Flossing helps keep gums healthy and reduces the risk of decay.

Brushing should be done after meals when possible but at a minimum every morning and every night. There is no required order but flossing first can help loosen debris under the gums making brushing more effective. Slowing down and focusing on each tooth improves results.

Fluoride toothpaste plays an important role in protecting enamel and preventing cavities. Cavities are caused by bacteria and fluoride strengthens the teeth against that damage. While concerns about fluoride safety are common it would take an extremely large amount to cause harm. Used as directed fluoride toothpaste is safe and effective for daily use.

Fluoride free toothpastes can clean the teeth but they do not

provide the same cavity protection. For most people a simple fluoride toothpaste with basic cavity protection is the best option. Toothpastes with added whitening agents peroxide baking soda or tartar control can be harsh and are not necessary for everyday use unless recommended by a dental professional.

Electric toothbrushes such as Oral B or Philips Sonicare are highly effective when used properly. Technique still matters. Each tooth and gumline should be brushed for two to three seconds to allow proper plaque removal. Whether manual or electric brushing too quickly reduces effectiveness.

Toothbrushes and brush heads should be replaced every three months. Over time bristles wear down and lose their ability to clean properly even if they appear fine. Continuing to use an old brush can allow plaque to remain and increase the risk of gum disease and decay.

Diet has a direct impact on dental health. Sugar is a leading cause of tooth decay especially when teeth are not brushed afterward. Coffee soda and acidic drinks can weaken enamel over time making teeth more vulnerable to damage. Moderation combined with good oral hygiene helps protect the teeth.

Certain warning signs should never be ignored. Bleeding gums ongoing bad breath and toothaches often indicate underlying problems. Regular dental visits every six months along with routine X rays can help identify issues early and prevent serious complications.

For those looking to improve their dental health this year the best place to start is scheduling a full dental exam and X rays to understand where things stand. Investing in a quality toothbrush learning proper brushing techniques and committing to brushing twice a day can make a lasting difference.

Dental health does not require perfection. It requires consistency.

Small daily habits practiced over time can protect your smile for years to come.

A First Step Into the Future: Highlands Virtual School FBLA Hosts Student Pop Up Shop

ALKING INTO OUR FIRST ever FBLA student pop up shop at Highlands Virtual School, I felt a mix of nerves and pride. As an FBLA student who was part of the event, I watched weeks of planning turn into a room full of creativity, conversation, and community support. What started as an idea became a real world experience that showed what students can do when given the opportunity.

The pop up shop featured eleven tables in total, ten student run tables and one FBLA table. Each student business brought something unique to the event. Visitors browsed baked goods, hot foods, candy, handmade bracelets, bookmarks, custom cups, button pins, books, and more.

Every table reflected effort, imagination, and a willingness to try something new.

It was not just students selling items, it was students learning how to present themselves, manage money, and interact with customers of all ages.

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was seeing who showed up.

Our superintendent, Brenda Longshore,

attended alongside Highlands Virtual School teachers, academy teachers, fellow students, and friends. Watching adults and peers stop to talk with student vendors made the event feel important.

Conversations about pricing, products, and ideas turned the pop up shop into a shared learning experience rather than just a sale.

From a fundraising perspective, the event was a success. FBLA raised about 200 dollars in total. Of that amount, 100 dollars came from students purchasing their tables to participate in the pop up shop. The remaining funds were raised through raffle ticket sales, which added excitement and encouraged even more involvement from visitors. These funds will help support FBLA students as we work

toward attending conferences that offer competitions, leadership training, and career focused experiences.

The memories of the day were beautifully captured by Mr. Belanger, who took the photographs provided from the event. His images help tell the story of our first pop up shop and preserve moments of creativity, connection, and pride that filled the room.

For me, this event felt like a glimpse into the future. It showed how skills we are learning now can carry into careers, small businesses, and leadership roles later in life. For visitors ranging from teenagers to senior citizens, the pop up shop offered proof that the next generation is already learning how to step forward.

Our first student pop up shop was a success, and it is only the beginning.

Plans are already in motion to do it again next year, with hopes of expanding and reaching even more of our community.

As FBLA at Highlands Virtual School continues to grow, donations and support are always appreciated to help get our students to conferences and future opportunities, where today’s ideas can become tomorrow’s success stories.

Tropical Winery Christmas Wine Run 5K Celebrates Fitness Music and Community in Lake Placid

HE HOLIDAY came SEASON alive at Tropical Winery on December 20 2025 as 93 runners and walkers gathered for the Tropical Winery Christmas Wine Run 5K turning the winery grounds into a joyful blend of fitness music and community celebration.

Participants of all ages and abilities took part in the scenic 5K while friends family members and spectators cheered them on. The event went far beyond the race itself offering a true Heartland experience filled with laughter conversation and connection.

Following the run guests stayed to enjoy live music with many taking to the dance floor while others relaxed with a glass of wine shopped and socialized throughout the winery grounds.

The atmosphere reflected exactly what the event was designed to promote healthy activity paired with fellowship and fun.

Tropical Winery continues to serve as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike hosting events that encourage connection and celebration. The Christmas Wine Run 5K was a reminder that in the Heartland community is just as important as competition.

From runners crossing the finish line to guests dancing shopping and enjoying the winery’s offerings the Christmas Wine Run 5K showcased the spirit of Lake Placid active welcoming and community focused.

Wreaths Across America Honors Service and Sacrifice at Sebring Medal of Honor Park

A

S PART OF THIS YEAR’S WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA observance, the community gathered at Sebring Medal of Honor Park to honor all veterans who have served and sacrificed, taking time to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the value of freedom. The ceremony recognized service members from all branches and eras, with wreaths placed in remembrance throughout the park a site dedicated to preserving the legacy of America’s Medal of Honor recipients.

Among those honored was U.S. Army Specialist Four Ardie Ray Copas, a native of Fort Pierce, Florida, who served with the 25th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War. Copas was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism in May 1970, after sacrificing his life to shield fellow soldiers during intense enemy fire near the Cambodian border an act that saved lives and embodied the highest ideals of military service.

During the Sebring ceremony, Copas’s wreath was laid by his family his daughter, Shyrell Jean Copas, and his widow, Betsy

Copas Cintonz. While the event honored all veterans, their participation created a deeply personal moment, reminding those in attendance that behind every name remembered is a family that continues to carry that sacrifice forward.

Copas’s bravery was formally recognized on the national stage in March 2014, when President Barack Obama presented the Medal of Honor on his behalf during a

White House ceremony. The medal was accepted by his daughter, Shyrell, who was only about five months old when her father was killed in action. During the ceremony, President Obama spoke of Copas’s selfless courage and the nation’s enduring responsibility to remember those who gave their lives for others.

As evergreen wreaths were placed at Sebring Medal of Honor Park, the ceremony reflected the core mission of Wreaths Across America to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach future generations the value of freedom.

The quiet moments shared at the memorial served as a powerful reminder that while time passes, the legacy of America’s heroes endures through remembrance, gratitude, and community.

Bringing Main Street Back Home Jane Benham’s Vision for a Thriving Downtown Avon Park

W

HEN JANE BENHAM talks about Main Street, it is not just a program or a title. It is personal. Her journey to becoming Executive Director of Avon Park Main Street began not in her hometown, but in Bartow, where a simple farmers market opportunity sparked something much bigger.

While working to expand her downtown farmers market, Benham learned firsthand how powerful the Main Street model could be. A grant she qualified for was administered through Bartow’s Main Street program, and a visit there left a lasting impression. Seeing the impact, the organization, and the leadership in action, she knew immediately that Avon Park could benefit from the same structure and support. That moment planted the seed.

From then on, her goal was clear. Bring Main Street back home to Avon Park.

Benham’s background made her a natural fit for the role. For years, she has owned and operated farmers markets, managed events, and handled marketing while consistently supporting community initiatives. As a business owner and an active member of the local Chamber of Commerce, she understands both sides of the table. She knows what members expect, what communities need, and how to connect the right people to make progress happen.

Looking ahead, Benham’s vision for downtown Avon Park is rooted in both growth and preservation. She envisions a vibrant Main Street where history lives on, businesses thrive, and the community naturally comes together. One year from now, success looks like new businesses opening downtown, quality events the community looks forward to, increased grant support for existing merchants, and visible improvements such as banners, signage, and enhanced lighting that reflect pride in the heart of the city.

Her first priorities focus on building a strong and sustainable foundation. That starts with strengthening the Board and committees, completing all required Florida Main Street trainings and reports, and ensuring the organization remains compliant and on track. Just as important is educating the community on who Main 14

Street is, what it does, and why it matters.

Having seen the program deactivated in the past, Benham is committed to making sure this time it is strong, sustainable, and built to continue for generations.

Community involvement is at the core of that mission. Benham emphasizes that Main Street only works when the community is engaged. Volunteers are always welcome on the Design, Economic Development, Organization, and Promotions committees, and she wants residents to know there truly is a seat at the table for everyone. The organization actively meets with individuals and partners at the local, regional, and state levels, prioritizes using local businesses for projects, keeps downtown merchants informed, and hosts Community Chats so residents can learn, ask questions, and get involved.

Events and festivals will continue to play an important role in drawing people downtown, but Benham is intentional about how they are planned. The goal is not to compete with downtown businesses, but to complement them. Events are designed to encourage walking, shopping, dining, and extended hours through merchant participation and specials. While events may look simple on the surface, they are carefully planned with one core priority in mind, economic vitality. Each gathering is meant to support downtown merchants while also attracting visitors who experience Avon Park’s charm and want to return.

That charm is something Benham believes truly sets Avon Park apart. Known as the City of Charm, it is something you

feel the moment you turn onto Main Street, even if it is hard to put into words. The challenge and opportunity lie in clearly identifying what makes Avon Park unique and finding creative ways to highlight, brand, and better showcase its history, identity, and people.

As she steps into this new chapter, Benham has a simple but powerful message for the community. This is a program where you can truly see the impact. Every membership and donation creates visible change in the heart of the city. You do not have to live in Avon Park or own a business to be involved.

New Stand-Alone VA Clinic in Sebring Expands Care and Access for Veterans

ETERANS IN HIGHLANDS COUNTY are now being served at a new, stand-alone VA clinic in Sebring, marking an important step forward in local veteran health care.

The new facility, located behind Bob Evans Restaurant just off U.S. 27, replaces the previous clinic location and offers expanded space, updated amenities, and improved access to services.

For years, the former Sebring VA clinic provided reliable care to local veterans while operating out of a smaller, leased space along U.S. 27. Staff at that location worked diligently to serve the community despite space limitations, building strong relationships and a legacy of care that veterans came to rely on. The new clinic builds directly on that foundation.

Unlike the previous location, which was housed in a strip mall setting, the new Sebring VA clinic was constructed from the ground up specifically for veteran care.

The increased square footage allows for better patient flow, additional exam rooms, and a more efficient layout designed to serve a growing veteran population.

Veterans who previously visited the old clinic should note that the former location is now closed. All services previously provided there have transitioned to the new facility behind Bob Evans, which is now the primary VA clinic serving Sebring and Highlands County.

The new clinic is designed to improve both access and efficiency. By expanding local capacity, it helps reduce the need for long-distance travel to larger VA facilities in Orlando or Bay Pines for certain services.

This is expected to result in smoother scheduling and quicker movement through appointments.

Additional features include dedicated space to assist veterans with telehealth appointments, particularly helpful for seniors or those without reliable internet access at home. The clinic also includes a conference room intended for group meetings and support programs, such as PTSD or peer support groups, offering veterans a consistent and appropriate place to gather.

Beyond medical care, the clinic brings multiple veteran support services together under one roof. Representatives from the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs are available one day each week to assist with benefits-related questions.

representatives are on site four days a week to help veterans with claims, paperwork, and navigating the VA system.

The clinic also serves as an important access point for Disabled American Veterans transportation services. DAV courtesy vans help veterans get to appointments at larger VA facilities such as Bay Pines, Cape Coral, and Orlando, and they are also available for local community care appointments when those services are coordinated through the VA. This transportation support plays a critical role for veterans who may face mobility challenges or lack reliable transportation.

By moving into a purpose-built facility while continuing the mission of the previous clinic, the new Sebring VA clinic represents both continuity and growth. It provides veterans across Highlands County with improved access to care, expanded services, and a clear, centralized location designed to meet their needs now and into the future Pulse of the Heartland.

It is a steady and reliable presence in the community, offering support, space, and partnership for those who work year-round to honor veterans.

This year’s Wreaths Across America ceremony at Memorial Gardens brought together volunteers, veterans, and families

to honor service members with dignity and care. The setting provided a meaningful space for reflection, allowing attendees to pause, remember, and recognize the sacrifices represented by each wreath placed.

Beyond this annual ceremony, Memorial Gardens has consistently supported a wide range of veteran-focused events throughout Highlands County. While some observances take place in public spaces

across the community, Memorial Gardens is frequently involved behind the scenes, offering assistance, coordination, and resources to help ensure these events are carried out respectfully and successfully.

Over the years, Memorial Gardens has worked alongside many different veteran groups and community partners, adapting to the needs of each event without seeking the spotlight. Their involvement is marked not by leadership titles or public recognition, but by a willingness to show up, help where needed, and support the mission of honoring those who served.

The grounds and staff have also played an important role in Memorial Day observances and other remembrance events, as well as initiatives that provide meaningful experiences and connection for veterans and their families. During her time in the program, Lilia has made a lasting impact by expanding opportunities for fellow cadets, introducing archery and orienteering, and helping lead numerous community service initiatives that strengthen both the unit and the greater Sebring community.

Lilia’s journey is especially impressive given her transition from an Army-based school to an Air Force JROTC program.

She adjusted quickly and confidently, transforming foundational leadership skills into well developed strengths marked by discipline, resilience, and professionalism.

Those who have worked alongside Lilia describe her as a leader who leads by example adaptable, driven, and committed to excellence. It is hoped that her story inspires others to embrace challenges, persevere through change, and step forward when opportunities to lead arise.

ETWEEN THE FINAL SCHOOL BELL and the moment parents return home, many teens are left navigating one of the most vulnerable parts of the day. For hundreds of local youth, The After School Spot Teen Center has become the place that fills that gap. A place where teens are welcomed, protected, and valued without cost or condition.

Founded on the belief that every teenager deserves a space to simply exist, The After School Spot serves middle and high school students by offering a free, safe environment focused on connection, dignity, and growth.

The After School Spot exists to engage, enrich, and empower youth. Through free or low cost programming, teens have access to youth development classes, creative outlets, peer engagement, and practical life skills. Beyond programming, the center also supports families by providing food, hygiene items, school supplies, and gently used clothing.

The program is guided by three core pillars: KYOTS, Keeping Youth Out of the Streets; L.E.S.S., Life Enrichment and Self Sufficiency; and C.A.R.E., Creating Available Resources Everyday. Together, these pillars create a foundation that prioritizes safety, belonging, and long term stability.

Looking back on the past year, one thing became clear to Regina Nicolis, the heart behind The After School Spot. This work is not being done alone.

One of the most meaningful moments came during the holidays when Whisper Lake Retirement Community reached out to make sure local teens had a Christmas to remember. While toy drives often focus on small children, teens are frequently overlooked. Whisper Lake changed that by adopting more than 30 teens and ensuring they were not forgotten during the season.

In total, 61 teens submitted wishlists which were shared with local businesses and sponsors. By Christmas morning, gifts were provided to 143 children and teens.

One generation showed up for another, creating an impact that reached far beyond the holiday.

While keeping teens safe after school remains essential, Regina hopes to expand the mission even further in the year ahead.

Plans are underway to launch an evidence based 12 week Life Skills Training Program as part of the L.E.S.S. initiative.

This program is designed to reduce risky behaviors, strengthen emotional health, and equip teens with real world tools. From financial literacy and basic car maintenance to mentorship and entrepreneurship, the goal is to ensure every teen who walks through the doors leaves better prepared for adulthood.

When asked what teens benefit from the most, the answer is simple. Belonging.

In a world where nearly everything costs money, The After School Spot offers something rare. A place teenagers can go without spending a dime.

With over 20 amenities including arcade games, a library, recreation spaces, and creative rooms, teens are free to relax and be themselves. They can attend a class, play pool, create art, or simply sit without pressure or expectations. There is no transaction attached to their presence, and that sense of acceptance is often the most powerful thing the center provides.

Regina’s passion for this work comes from her own life experience. By sixth grade, she was a runaway, sleeping on trains, staircases, and park benches. She learned early how few safe places exist for kids who do not have money or support.

The After School Spot was created to be the place she needed as a child. A place that tells young people they matter and they are welcome. Her faith continues to guide the work, trusting that when something is called into being, provision will follow.

Like many grassroots nonprofits, the center faces ongoing challenges, from rising costs to constant resource needs. Yet time and again, the community has stepped in to help. Each challenge has reinforced a powerful truth. This center belongs to the community.

Looking ahead, Regina hopes to expand mentorship opportunities by connecting teens with local business owners and leaders. Plans are also underway for a small food trailer project that will allow teens to learn job skills, earn community service hours, and help generate revenue for the center. Creative outlets such as gardening and hands on self expression activities are also being introduced to support mental health and confidence.

Success is not measured only by numbers or programs. To Regina, success looks like a teenager walking out the door with their head held high. Knowing they are loved, supported, and believed in.

If a teen leaves with more confidence, new skills, stronger friendships, and the knowledge that they matter, then the mission has succeeded. And when that happens, the entire community wins.

New Florida License Plate Law Leaves Drivers Scratching Their Heads

ALLAHASSEE, FLA. — Since a new Florida law took effect October 1, drivers across the state have been grappling with questions about when a license plate is legal and when it could land them in trouble.

The law, aimed at making sure license plates are fully visible at all times, makes it illegal to cover, obscure, alter or hide any part of a vehicle’s plate that is needed for identification. Under the statute, anything that blocks the numbers, letters or registration sticker could lead to a seconddegree misdemeanor charge.

The confusion started almost as soon as the law took effect. Social media and local news feeds filled with questions about whether popular decorations like license plate frames were suddenly against the law. In one South Florida town, a misunderstanding over the statute even led to a mistaken arrest before police released the driver and cleared up the situation.

Law Designed to Help Law Enforcement

State officials and law enforcement agencies say the intent of the law is straightforward. Officers need to be able to read a plate clearly, whether it is for identifying a vehicle involved in a hit and run, tracking a stolen car or processing toll information. An obscured tag can make that much more difficult, they say.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has issued memos to law enforcement and clarification notices to the public to explain what’s allowed and what isn’t. According to the state’s guidance, basic license plate frames are still permitted as long as they do not interfere with the plate’s primary details — the number and the registration decal in the top right corner. Frames that touch the bottom of the plate or partially cover decorative wording are typically acceptable so long as officers can still read the essential information.

Some drivers have told reporters they were unaware of the changes until they got pulled over or read about it online.

Others question why such strict rules are being enforced, especially on vehicles that have never been in trouble. Law enforcement officials respond that the law is not intended to target ordinary motorists but to close loopholes used by people trying to hide plates from cameras and license plate readers.

The most important rule for drivers to remember is this: the plate’s identifying information must be completely visible at all times. New Beginnings, Faithful Foundations

S A NEW YEAR BEGINS, many of us feel the quiet pull of reflection. We look back on what the past year held such as joys, losses, prayers answered, prayers still waiting and we look ahead, wondering what it means to step forward with faith.

For some, new beginnings feel hopeful. For others, they feel complicated.

There can be a sense of guilt that rises with hope. A question whispered in the heart: Is it okay to move forward when parts of my past still ache? Can we embrace something new without dishonoring what came before?

Scripture reminds us that God is a God of continuity, not erasure. He does not ask us to forget the past in order to walk into the future. Instead, He redeems it.

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past,” Isaiah writes, not as a command to dismiss our story, but as an invitation to trust that God is doing something new even while honoring what has been. God never wastes a season. Every chapter, especially the hard ones, shapes us for what is next.

Moving forward is not the same as moving on.

Faith allows us to carry memory without carrying shame. To grieve without losing hope. To honor what was while trusting God with what will be.

There is no requirement in Scripture that we remain stuck in sorrow to prove love or faithfulness. Healing is not a lack of devotion; it is often the fruit of it. Choosing joy again does not diminish the significance of what we have lost, it reflects confidence that God is still writing our story.

New beginnings are not about becoming someone else. They are about becoming more fully who God created us to be.

As the new year unfolds, perhaps the question is not, “What must I leave behind?” but rather, “What is God inviting me to carry forward?” Wisdom. Gratitude. Lessons learned. A deeper reliance on Him. We can step into the future with open hands, trusting that the same God who walked with us through past seasons will walk with us into new ones. The old does not disappear, it becomes part of the testimony.

And there is no guilt in that.

Only grace.

Sebring Celebrates 75 Years Since Its First Sports Car Race

EBRING — Downtown Sebring came alive on New Year’s Eve as residents and visitors gathered to mark a milestone moment in motorsports history. The community came together to celebrate the seventy five year anniversary of Sebring’s first sports car race, originally held on December 31, 1950.

The celebration transformed the city circle into a tribute to racing history, drawing steady crowds throughout the afternoon. Families, longtime racing fans, and visitors filled the downtown area to experience an event that blended history, classic cars, and hometown pride.

More than fifty vehicles were on display, including classic automobiles and race cars that represent the foundation of Sebring’s motorsports legacy.

The anniversary commemorates the race that eventually led to the creation of the world renowned Sebring International Raceway, now one of the most respected endurance racing venues in the world.

What began as a local race on former military airfield pavement grew into a global motorsports tradition that continues to define the city.

The downtown event featured live music, local vendors, family activities, and a kids car race that brought smiles to both children and parents. A Legacy Show and Tell area allowed longtime enthusiasts to share stories, memorabilia, and personal memories tied to Sebring’s racing past.

Seventy five years after engines first echoed through Sebring, the city continues to honor the race that helped shape its identity. It remains not only a destination for motorsports fans, but a community proud of its history and committed to preserving its legacy.

S THE CALENDAR TURNS and familiar rituals begin to fade, twinkling lights are packed away, resolutions are drafted, and thank you notes are written. Christmas slips into memory, New Year’s fireworks dissolve into ordinary evenings, and life resumes its steady pace. Somewhere between wrapping gifts and wrapping up another year, the sense of wonder can feel thinner, like a song played too many times to stir the same delight.

As children, wonder came easily.

Christmas felt endless and electric. Small traditions, special plates, familiar songs, and the glow of lights against winter darkness carried a sense of magic. New Year’s Eve felt like a doorway, not just to another date on the calendar, but to possibility itself. Time felt spacious, and joy felt effortless. Then we grew up.

Responsibilities multiplied. Grief visited.

Disappointments accumulated.

We learned efficiency, productivity, and survival. We learned how to manage life, but not always how to marvel at it. Having seen many holidays come and go, we assumed wonder had worn out through repetition. Yet wonder was never meant to be consumed and lost. It was meant to be practiced.

Growing older does not take the wonder of life from us. Busyness buries it.

Awe does not disappear with age. It simply grows quieter when unattended, 26

waiting patiently beneath routines and deadlines, beneath the rush to get through days instead of living within them. Joy does not vanish because we have lived longer. It asks to be reawakened in subtler ways.

moments: warm light on a kitchen counter at dusk, laughter that escapes unexpectedly, the familiar comfort of a well worn sweater, the sound of rain when the world finally slows. It lives in the courage to begin again after a difficult year and in the quiet dignity of finishing one that asked much of us.

Christmas and New Year’s remind us that endings and beginnings are always intertwined. We are constantly closing chapters and making room for new ones, not just once a year, but every day. The loss of wonder does not come from repetition, but from forgetting to pause and be present. To rediscover awe, we must choose attentiveness over autopilot.

Wonder does not require grand gestures or dramatic change. It begins with permission. Permission to notice, to linger, to feel without rushing to label or explain a moment. It begins with allowing ourselves gratitude without irony, hope without embarrassment, and joy without apology.

Delight is not childish. It is a gift meant for every person, at every age.

When we intentionally slow down, we see that wonder was never seasonal. It did not belong only to childhood Christmas mornings or first New Year’s celebrations.

It lives in resilience. It lives in renewal. It lives in the quiet realization that we are still here, still capable of love, and still able to imagine something better than yesterday.

The new year does not demand reinvention. It invites renewal, and renewal does not come from pressure, but from presence.

As one year closes and another opens, perhaps the most meaningful resolution is not to do more, achieve more, or fix more, but to notice more. Life is not meant to be endured between milestones, but experienced in the spaces between them.

The wonder you fear you have lost is simply waiting for your attention.

S THE CALENDAR TURNS TO A NEW YEAR, high school seniors across the community are deep into college applications, a milestone that marks both excitement and uncertainty. With deadlines approaching, many students and their families are also focusing on one of the most important questions of all: how to pay for college.

Scholarships and grants, which typically do not need to be repaid, can significantly reduce the cost of higher education. These opportunities are available to a wide range of students, including veterans, service members, and their families.

One of the most important first steps for any student is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as the FAFSA. This form opens the door to federal grants and is often required for scholarships offered by colleges and private organizations. For students with financial need, federal aid can make a meaningful difference.

The Federal Pell Grant is one of the most well-known programs, providing need-based assistance to undergraduate students each year. Because it does

not have to be repaid, it offers longterm value to recipients. Additional aid may be available through the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, which supports students with the greatest financial need.

Beyond federal grants, national scholarships can further reduce the cost of college. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program awards $20,000 to high-achieving seniors recognized for leadership and service.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation offers substantial scholarships to academically strong students with financial need, while the Horatio Alger Scholarships support students who have overcome significant personal challenges.

Merit-based awards are also available.

The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes top PSAT performers and connects them with scholarship opportunities nationwide.

Students pursuing specific fields such as science, technology, the arts, education, or public service will find many targeted scholarships available. Free search tools like Fastweb, Scholarships.com, and the Federal Student Aid website can help students identify opportunities that match

their interests and qualifications.

Grants and Scholarships for Veterans and Military Families Students connected to military service have access to additional resources that recognize the sacrifices made by service members and their families. The Post 9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon Program remain cornerstone benefits, often covering tuition and living expenses for eligible veterans and dependents.

Beyond those programs, many organizations offer scholarships tailored specifically to military families.

ThanksUSA provides scholarships to spouses and children of service members attending college, technical schools, or vocational programs. The Fisher House Foundation awards annual grants through its Scholarships for Military Children Program.

The Wings Over America Scholarship Foundation supports dependent children of Navy aviation personnel, with some awards renewable over multiple years. The Special Operations Warrior Foundation provides scholarships and educational support to surviving children of special operations personnel who were killed in the line of duty.

Additional opportunities are offered through organizations such as the Army Nurse Corps Association and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, along with unit-specific funds that help veterans, spouses, and dependents pursue careers in fields ranging from healthcare to logistics. Veteran service organizations including AMVETS and the Veterans of Foreign Wars also provide scholarships and emergency grants to help reduce financial barriers.

As the new year unfolds, seniors are encouraged to view the college application season as more than a race against deadlines. It is an opportunity to explore financial resources that align with their talents, backgrounds, and goals. Applying early and applying broadly can open doors that might otherwise be missed.

New beginnings often require effort and persistence, but they also bring opportunity.

For students entering their final months of high school, the right combination of grants and scholarships can turn the goal of higher education into a reality in 2026 and beyond.
