a word from the president Change has been the theme for the presidential candidates of both parties in this election year. They could have visited the PA campus for an excellent example of change for the better and to see how change can be managed effectively and with excellent results.

In the 1990’s, I served on the PA Board and have spent little time on the campus since, except for going through the drop-off or pick-up line to deliver or retrieve my grandchildren.

When I returned to the campus late this summer to assume my role as interim president, I was astonished by the complete physical transformation of the institution I knew as PA.

From two classroom buildings and a gym, PA has become a campus that feels more like a college than a school. In one summer, two separate physical plants that served different purposes became a single institution devoted to educating young people. In a remarkably short time, facilities were renovated and re-shaped to provide teachers who had long worked in cramped quarters with state-of-the art educational spaces. From a school where students from 3 to 18 had been elbow-to-elbow, PA has become a campus where Early Childhood, Lower, Middle, and Upper School students each have their own space—and yet the four entities comfortably share common spaces and interact productively. Seniors easily move to the Early Childhood classrooms to serve as senior brothers and sisters to the smaller children, but each age has wonderful classrooms designed for their particular needs—all on one campus.

PA has made great strides in a very short period of time. For the first time in many years, the school has facilities that are worthy of the quality of the faculty and the academic program. There is still work to be done, but PA has made a quantum leap.

You who are recognized in this annual report for your contributions of time, your work with our students, and your financial support have made these gains possible. The students of PA and all of us who work here on campus with them are grateful to you for your generosity. Yes, there is still work to be done, and we will be calling on you for additional help. We must continue to improve our programs, we must continue to grow the annual fund, and we must provide for additional capital needs. But much has been accomplished, and you can feel great pride in the “new” PA. Sincerely,

The 2007-08 school year was one of excitement, activity, and anticipation like no other in PA history.

After two years of meeting upon meeting with FBC representatives, city officials, architects, Board members,

and PA families, the school was finally ready to break ground on its campus expansion project. Construction crews, sheetrockers, and painters were welcome additions to our little campus community as the school year was coming to a close.

And that’s when the magic really began.

fall 2007 The multi-phased Campus Master Plan was unveiled. Phase One would address campus expansion and renovation to be implemented by Summer 2008. Phase Two would identify additional renovation and campus projects for the future.

The Connor Performing Arts Center houses our 1850 seat auditorium, as well as the Middleton Music Room, the Francie Phelan Art Gallery, and our PATV headquarters!

where we stand now WE’RE ALMOST THERE! With a goal of $5.6 million for Phase 1 of the campus expansion, we are proud to announce that the capital campaign has raised 85% of its goal for a total of $4.97 million to date.

With under $625,000 to go, the finish line for this phase of the campaign is definitely in sight! But we still need your help to go that last mile. We are grateful to two donors who have stepped forward to inspire others to join in on the philanthropic action and see to it that we reach our goal.

THE MILLION DOLLAR CHALLENGE! To help PA reach its capital campaign goal and to encourage families to participate, an anonymous donor stepped forward last spring with a Million Dollar Challenge. This exciting challenge will match every new capital gift or pledge dollar for dollar. To date, the school has received $376,000 in new gifts toward the Million Dollar Challenge, with $624,000 of the challenge still to earn.

The Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC) seeks to identify students with demonstrated leadership potential and a history of academic achievement who will contribute to the strength and character of the JrNYLC. A WAY WITH WORDS! Not only was Katie Lants ‘12 crowned the 2008 Middle School Spelling Bee Champion, she also won first place in the MS division of the CRC National Essay Writing Contest! Katie spelled the final word “obstinate” correctly to earn her spelling bee title, and her winning essay focused on the how U.S. ratification of the CRC would impact the global community.

Each year, two outstanding PA teachers are the recipients of The Meyer Endowed Award for Teaching Excellence. These prestigious awards have come about because of a generous endowment established by alumni parents Chuck and Carole Meyer in honor of their daughters, Marley (Class of 1987) and Carissa (Class of 1990), whose lives were enriched as a result of their educational experiences at PA. Upper School AP Geography teacher Jody Musgrove was one of only twenty Arkansas teachers selected to participate in a month-long study tour of China and Japan.

Art teacher Shirley Howard attended and served as a delegate to the National Art Education Association conference in New Orleans. Ms. Howard is the elected Middle School Division Director for NAEA and sits on the board of directors for the associashirley howard tion. BOOK DEALS AND SEMINARS In addition to being selected as one of only twenty teachers from across the U.S. to participate in the Brown University Summer Program on Iran, Upper School Social Science teacher and department chair Bill Topich also signed a book deal with Greenwood Press to author A bill topich History of Myanmar.

He also had the honor of presenting In God’s Name: Teaching Religious Terrorism at the AP National Conference in Seattle over the summer.

SERVICE learning At Pulaski Academy, community service is an integral part of the learning process. From preschool to graduation, students participate in service learning projects to help them develop a sense of civic responsibility, a spirit of community, and a lifelong commitment to volunteerism.

200708 STUDENT SERVICE interact club On National Philanthropy Day, the PA Rotary Interact Club was named Outstanding Volunteer Youth Fundraiser for the state of Arkansas. Sponsored by Upper School English teacher and Community Service Coordinator Marjorie Wagner, the Interact Club dedicated an average of 4000 hours over the course of one school year to various volunteer activities. Approximately 160 students are involved in the club that has been active in helping the Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock Zoo, Salvation Army, Camp Aldersgate, Youth Home, and many other area organizations.

Seniors collected 26,016 cans. Juniors brought in 16,680 cans. Sophomores donated 14,989 cans. And freshmen followed with 7,044 cans for a total of 64,729.

School students must complete a minimum of fifteen hours of community service per year, though most far exceed the minimum. Seniors must, therefore, accumulate a total of sixty hours to receive their diplomas. Students who double their hours each year graduate with honors.

green club Green Club members were not only responsible for paper recycling and for spreading awareness about environmental issues across campus, but they also took to the street and helped clean up Highway 10.

amnesty brings awareness Led by US Social Studies Department Chair and AP teacher Bill Topich, PA’s Amnesty International group works to promote human rights through education and public awareness efforts.

The group devoted three years to raising funds and awareness for the crisis in the Darfur region. Under the leadership of 2007-08 co-presidents Matt Swaim and Leslie Golden, the group brought the Darfur campaign to a close. The $6,000 raised will go to the International Rescue Committee, which helps to feed and house refugees from war-torn areas.

PA’s LS and MS teamed up to provide Thanksgiving dinners for Central Arkansas families in need. In the spirit of giving, the MS Student Council sponsored a food drive, with donations going to Potluck Food Rescue for Arkansas. MS students brought dollars for turkeys, collecting enough money to purchase 91 birds. LS students brought specific food items based on grade level and, in total, collected 615 items.

BLUE & GOLD CHALLENGE GRANT PROVES SUCCESSFUL! The Blue & Gold Challenge Grant was a huge success with over 40 new $500 gifts. Challenge grants have been the springboard to the Annual Fund’s success for the last eight years, dating back to when PA received its first anonymous grant. pa faculty endowment fund This endowment was established by PA families dedicated to teaching excellence through supporting faculty salaries.

meyer endowed awards for teaching excellence The Meyer Awards were established in 1993 by alumni parents Chuck and Carole Meyer in honor of their daughters, Marley Meyer Jones ’87 and Carissa Meyer Pereira ’90, whose lives were deepened and enriched as a result of their educational experiences at PA. The awards are given annually to two teachers who represent exemplary service to PA and teaching excellence.

pa financial aid endowment fund The Financial Aid Endowment Fund was established to support the general financial aid program. Local businesses and PA families have generously contributed to this fund to help make a PA education available to more students.

merrill lynch minority scholarship fund Established by Merrill Lynch and Crews & Associates, this fund was established to provide increased educational opportunities for minority students at PA.

game announcer for many years. The scholarship is given annually to a graduating senior athlete who made a significant contribution to the team effort and who exhibits leadership, dedication, respect and encouragement.

connor endowed scholarship fund

william r. “bill” smith endowed scholarship

The Connor Scholarship Fund was established by former Trustees Robert and Sandra Connor, whose children attended PA and whose grandchildren currently attend. Proceeds from the fund are used to support the general financial aid program, providing assistance to students who might otherwise be unable to attend Pulaski Academy.

The William R. “Bill” Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2005 in memory of Bill Smith, a former trustee and PA parent. A scholarship is given annually by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees at graduation to memorialize Bill’s contributions to PA and to honor a graduating senior who demonstrates four of Bill’s most abiding attributes: faithfulness, integrity, character, and service.

carl w. lindell endowed scholarship fund The Lindell Scholarship Fund was established to honor and recognize Mr. Carl W. Lindell’s distinguished career and life’s work helping young people. The fund provides financial assistance to qualified minority applicants who might not otherwise have the opportunity to obtain a PA education.

murphy scholarship funds The Murphy Scholarship Funds were established by former PA parents Chip and Cindy Murphy, with additional funds provided by the EE Ford Foundation. The funds provide assistance to families with financial need, including one fund providing financial assistance specifically for a minority student in Upper School.

SCHOLARSHIPS rachel rutherford endowed scholarship The Rachel Rutherford Endowed Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of Rachel Allison Rutherford, a member of the Class of 2009. The Fund has been made possible by the many friends and family members who wanted to honor Rachel’s life and memory with a gift to her school. Beginning with the Class of 2008, the Fund will provide assistance each year for a student with academic promise who otherwise might not have the financial resources necessary to obtain a PA education.

john p. sawatski endowed scholarship The John P. Sawatski Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 in memory of PA parent John Sawatski. A dedicated volunteer, John served as Bruin Backer President and as PA’s beloved

christopher michael toulson memorial scholarship The Christopher Michael Toulson Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Chris Toulson, a member of the Pulaski Academy Class of 1998. The award is presented annually at graduation to a student who exhibits many of Chris’ same characteristics: well-rounded, exemplary citizenship, concern for other students, respect for others, and a joy for life.

mary grace tucker endowed scholarship The Mary Grace Tucker Endowed Scholarship was established in 2006 in memory of PA student Mary Grace Tucker to commemorate her life and her contributions to PA. The financial aid award is given annually to a student of academic promise with financial need.

SPECIAL PURPOSE FUNDS hellmuth endowed travel award Mr. James G. Hellmuth established the Hellmuth Travel Fund to reward exceptional teaching and to encourage professional development and lifelong learning.

pa distinguished lectures series fund The Pulaski Academy Distinguished Lecture Series was established in 1999 by a grant from the EE Ford Foundation and matching funds from local donors. Speakers have included Harvard professor Dr. Sara Lawrence Lightfoot, the Chicago Lab School’s Dr. Lucinda Lee Katz, and Pulitzer Prize winning author Clifton Taulbert.
