The school summer holidays are finally here, bringing six weeks of adventures, memory-making and, if we're honest, the occasional "what shall we do today?" moment. That's exactly what this issue is here for.

We've packed these pages with inspiration to help you make the most of the summer without breaking the bank. You'll find plenty of days out ideas across Essex, beautiful beaches to explore, simple crafts to enjoy at home, and lots of familyfriendly events to check out this summer.

We're especially excited to be working with Essex Wildlife Trust on this special collaboration issue. They do incredible work protecting our local wildlife and inspiring children to connect with nature, and we're delighted to share some of their fantastic summer events and activities with you. We've also teamed up with SNAP Charity to bring you a practical Summer Survival Guide, filled with helpful ideas for keeping everyone happy during the long holidays.

We hope this issue helps you create a summer full of family time and wonderful memories.

From hidden estuary trails and grasslands to magical storybook adventures and dragonfly-filled wetlands, there are wild discoveries awaiting around every corner.

So, pack your binoculars (real or DIY), bring your sense of adventure and get ready to explore the wild side of Essex.

Where stories meet nature One of the most magical ways to get your little ones into nature is through a story and some much-loved characters. Essex Wildlife Trust’s character trails help bring favourite books to life in beautiful outdoor settings.

Langdon Nature Discovery Park boasts everyone's favourite rabbit. Follow Peter Rabbit through the winding paths and rich wildlife habitats and see if you can spot his friends along the way. If The Gruffalo is your favourite, then head to Thorndon Nature Discovery Centre, step into the deep dark wood and keep your eyes peeled for Owl, Fox and Snake ... and maybe even the Gruffalo! Over at Hanningfield Reservoir Nature Discovery Park Nature Discovery Park, Ratty, Mole and Toad await visitors to spot them in the The Wind in the Willows trail. Brambly Hedge fans can explore Abberton Reservoir Nature Discovery Park

Orchid meadows Langdon Nature Discovery Park is bursting with colour during the summer months.

Wander through flower-filled meadows alive with bees and butterflies, then head to the large lake where little explorers can watch swans glide across the water.

Families can enjoy gentle walks through the woodland, take in sweeping views across the Thames Estuary and discover wildlife at every turn. On warm, sunny days, the reserve is full of movement, making every visit feel like a new adventure.

From just £1, families can pick up a trail map from the Nature Discovery Centres and set off on an adventure packed with wildlife quizzes, brass rubbing activities and nature themed challenges.

It’s a wonderful way to encourage little explorers to look more closely at the natural world around them, whilst looking for beloved characters. Children often discover butterflies resting on flowers, birds singing from hedgerows and insects busy working on the ground.

Kaleidoscope of butterflies At Chafford Gorges Nature Discovery Park, butterflies take centre stage in the summer months.

Marbled whites, meadow browns, and common blues are just a few of the butterflies fluttering above the grassland while wildflowers provide an important source of food for pollinators. Trails weave through the woodland, lakeside habitats and meadows, offering plenty of opportunities of exploration with the family.

It's the perfect place for young nature detectives to slow down and see how many different butterfly species they can find and identify.

Dragonfly dances Dragonflies are among one of nature’s most fascinating creatures, and Abberton Reservoir Nature Discovery Park is one of the best places to spot them.

Warm summer days bring black-tailed skimmers, emperor dragonflies just to name a few, plus many other species to the ponds and reed-lined waterways. Seeing their shimmering wings catch the sunlight as they patrol the water’s edge in search of insects is exciting.

Beyond the pond lies the reservoir itself, which is surrounded by open countryside and rich wetland habitats, attracting many different bird species throughout the year.

Little explorers can spot multicoloured living jewels helicoptering across the pond and decide which are their favourites.

For those searching for something a little quieter, Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park is the perfect place to slow down and explore together as a family.

Hidden trails, wildlife hides and beautiful views create the feeling of stepping into another world. Watch paddling ducks up close from our hides, which offers a welcome break from the sunshine. Listen out for birdsong in the hedgerows and see if you can identify the birds you hear. Along with way, challenge yourself to find and name different butterflies and insects.

With plenty of marked trails to follow, little explorers can lead the adventure while the whole family enjoys discovering something new around every corner.

Bring a pair of binoculars or hire a pair for just £5 a day, you never know what wildlife you might discover.

Nature to spot Nature’s greatest summer spectacles Summer is packed with wildlife wonders, and Essex Wildlife Trust reserves provide a front-row seat to some of nature’s most

impressive displays.

Woodland wonders Woodland become natures playground during the warmer months.

Sunlight filters through the leafy canopies, creating beautiful patterns of light on the ground and welcome shade along the winding paths. Birds fill the air with song whilst squirrels leap from branch to branch overhead.

Ancient woodland habitats support a huge variety of wildlife, including butterflies, beetles, fungi, and wildflowers.

Turn your walk into an adventure by collecting different shaped leaves for leaf rubbing, seeing who can give the widest tree trunk a hug, or listening out for birdsong as you explore. Keep your eyes peeled for butterflies, beetles and other woodland wildlife along the way.

If you are lucky, you might even spot one of Britain’s rarest butterflies, the heath fritillary, at Pound Wood

nature reserve. Thorndon Country Park, Hanningfield Reservoir Nature Discovery Park, and Pound Wood nature reserve all offer wonderful woodland experiences for any families looking for cool, shady summer walks.

Adventurous coasts Essex has over 350 miles of coastline, making it one of the country's greatest wildlife treasures.

From wide-open estuaries to peaceful saltmarshes, there’s plenty for families to discover along the coast. Look out for your sheep and cow superstars, who help care for our nature reserves simply by grazing and wandering through the landscape, creating the perfect conditions for wildlife to thrive.

Keep an eye out for wading birds searching for food and enjoy the ever-changing views where no two visits are ever the same.

Essex Wildlife Trust's wilder holiday clubs give children the chance to spend their days outdoors exploring nature, making friends and learning new skills.

Led by experienced members of the Wilder Learning Team, activities might include den building, nature crafts, wildlife discovery, bug hunting and outdoor games.

Shell Painting Butterfly

Steps 1. Firstly, paint your shells using pastel acrylic paint.

You can create an ombre effect by blending 2 colours together.

2. Create dotted patterns using acrylic paint and cotton buds.

3. Stick the shells onto a mini canvas in the shape of a butterfly. Place a turret shell in the middle for the butterfly’s body.

Transform ordinary shells into charming pastel-coloured butterflies. With a palette of soft hues and a touch of imagination, children can breathe new life into these natural treasures, creating fluttering works of canvas art.

This enchanting craft offers a wonderful opportunity for kids to explore their artistic talents while celebrating the beauty of nature.

Jump Into Summer at the UK's Biggest Bounce Adventure in Braintree If your children have endless energy to burn this summer, this could be the ultimate day out. Mega Bounce, the world's largest touring inflatable playhouse, is making its UK debut at Braintree Village – and it's only a short drive away.

From 18 July to 31 August, families can bounce, climb, slide and explore an incredible inflatable world covering 2,500 square metres and standing more than eight metres high. Packed with giant characters, huge slides, obstacle courses, sports challenges and dedicated bounce zones, there's plenty to keep little adventurers entertained.

The fun continues beyond the inflatable too.

The festival-style event space will be filled with music, delicious street food, giant garden games, table tennis and family entertainment, making it easy to spend a whole day enjoying everything on offer.

To ensure everyone can join in, there are different sessions throughout the day. Quiet Sessions run from 10am to 11am, offering a calmer experience with reduced capacity and no loud music or announcements. During the day, All Ages Sessions bring the full festival atmosphere, while evenings are reserved for Adults Only, with DJs, karaoke, a licensed bar and even foam parties on selected Saturdays.

Each ticket includes a 60-minute unlimited bounce session, giving visitors plenty of time to tackle every corner of the giant inflatable attraction. Spectator tickets are also available for those who'd rather watch from the sidelines.

Children must be at least five years old and one metre tall to take part, while under-fours can attend free as spectators.

Tickets start from £18 per person, with discounts available for groups and members of Braintree Village's PLUS+ rewards programme.

Seaside Gems for the Perfect Day Out this Summer When the sun makes an appearance, you don't always need to travel far for a memorable family adventure. Walton-on-theNaze and Frinton-on-Sea are neighbouring seaside towns that each offer something a little different, making either a fantastic choice for a summer day out.

If your family loves a traditional seaside atmosphere with plenty to keep children entertained, Walton-on-the-Naze is hard to beat. The wide sandy beach is perfect for paddling, digging and shell collecting, while the impressive pier is packed with family fun. Children can enjoy mini dodgems, trampolines, teacup rides and more, with a £10 wristband giving unlimited access to the rides throughout the day – a great option if you've got little thrill-seekers.

Forgotten the bucket and spade? Don't worry.

The lovely Walton Beach Toy Library lets families borrow beach toys. When it's time for a break, you'll find ice cream kiosks, cafés, chip shops and picnic spots dotted along the promenade.

If the British weather has other ideas, the indoor arcade offers 2p machines, claw grabbers, air hockey and

a small soft play area, making it an ideal rainy-day backup.

Just a few minutes down the coast, Frintonon-Sea offers a quieter pace. Known for its beautiful golden sands and colourful beach huts, it's the perfect place for families looking to spread out and enjoy a more relaxed beach day. Even during the school holidays, the beach feels wonderfully spacious, giving children plenty of room to run, play and build sandcastles.

One of Frinton's biggest advantages is how easy it is to visit. There is free parking along much of the seafront, helping to keep the cost of a family day out down. Public toilets are available (bring a 20p coin), and the gentle promenade is ideal for scooters, balance bikes and pushchairs.

Whichever beach you choose, it's well worth checking the tide times before setting off.

Both beaches are at their best around low tide, when the sand stretches out and there's plenty of room to play.

Summer fun is blooming across Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone Looking for free family days out this summer?

Brentwood, Shenfield and Ingatestone are packed with activities, colourful displays and plenty of reasons to spend time exploring your local high streets.

Ingatestone in Bloom A brand-new event, Ingatestone in Bloom, will transform one of Essex’s prettiest villages with beautiful floral displays from Friday 17 July, continuing throughout the summer holidays.

Animal Adventures Await at Colchester Zoological Society We love a family day out that keeps everyone entertained, and Colchester Zoological Society is one of those places that never disappoints. Young Photographers Wanted Looking for a free summer holiday activity?

The Week Junior Science+Nature has launched its annual Scavenger Hunt Photo Contest, encouraging children under 16 to head outdoors, discover the natural world and get creative with a camera.

Running from 17 July to 22 August, this year's theme, Focus on Nature, challenges young photographers to find and photograph 10 natural objects while exploring the outdoors using all five senses.

Free Swim Safety Sessions in Clacton This Summer Swim Safe is coming to Clacton-onSea’s Martello Bay on various dates throughout the summer holidays.

For children ages 7-14, these fun, free outdoor sessions teach children vital water safety skills. Delivered by Tendring District Council, sessions are available for schools and the public.

Public bookings open six weeks in advance. For those who are travelling into Suffolk this summer, they are also available in Lowestoft.

Planning Ahead for a Stress-Free* Summer If your child thrives on structure and routine, the summer holidays can feel like an endless stretch of uncertainty. While it's impossible for busy families to plan all 42 days in detail, having some routines and rough plans can make a real difference.

SNAP Charity partners with parents to provide compassion, guidance and hope for the whole family. Working across Essex, Thurrock and Southend, SNAP supports families who have a child or young person, aged 0-25, with any additional need or disability. There is a variety of services and resources and no formal diagnosis or professional referral is necessary to access SNAP services.

Where to start?

It can help to visualise the six weeks as a whole. Use a calendar or print a simple grid with a square for each day of the holidays.

Add in any events or activities you've already booked, such as holidays or day trips, and look for weeks that may already be busier than others. Your child may like to see the full calendar, or you may prefer to break it down into a visual day or weekly timetable.

Filling in the rest Summer activities can soon become expensive, especially with more than one child. It can also be difficult to think of ideas on the spot, so creating a list of free or lowcost activities in advance can really help.

SNAP's Summer Survival Guide includes plenty of suggestions, alongside lots of inspiration available online.

Depending on your child's preferences, you could offer a choice of two or three activities, let them choose from a list, or even make it into a lucky dip using folded pieces of paper or lolly sticks. Repeating favourite activities each week can also provide a reassuring routine.

Plan B British summer weather isn't always predictable, so it's worth having an indoor backup plan for outdoor activities. Letting your child know in advance that plans may change—but that an alternative is already in place—can help reduce disappointment and anxiety. For example: "On Tuesday we're going to the seaside, but if it's cold and rainy we'll go to the library's craft session instead."

Returning to familiar bedtimes and mealtimes before term starts can help make the transition back to school much smoother. *Although SNAP can't guarantee a completely stress-free summer, these tips—and the full Summer Survival Guide— should help make the holidays a little more enjoyable for the whole family.
