          Thirty-four years ago, I found my piece of paradise. I knew I wanted to be part of helping people fulfill their dreams. My family and I moved here in 1989, leaving behind everything we knew to start a new life in this little slice of heaven. We had been vacationing here since 1969, and my wife had spent all her summers here since 1961. We knew that this was where we were meant to be.
           
    In bringing our two youngest children from the Washington DC area, they threatened to possibly run away because of a completely different environment and the loss of lots of friends. Still, they found new friends, graduated from Western Carolina, and are raising families. It would be challenging to get them to leave now. We have grown from a family of 5 to 11 with a new one on the way. WE LOVE IT HERE and have met some wonderful people.
           
     
    One of my passions is gardening, and I love nothing more than getting my hands dirty and creating something beautiful out of nothing. I also enjoy playing golf, but unfortunately, I have had to put that on hold since my spine operation. But I know that I’ll be back on the greens soon enough. One of the things I love most about this area is sharing it with others. I love to give tours of the entire region, showing off our version of paradise and introducing people to all the beautiful things that make this place so unique.
          If you’re considering moving here, my advice is simple: wait to purchase anything until you’ve been shown the entire area. Very few people will decide this isn’t for them, but that’s okay if they do. We want people who love this place as much as we do. So if you’re looking for a little slice of heaven, come visit us.           The Cucumber Basil Lime Gimlet
          Refreshing, tasty, and even healthy. This easy-to-make cocktail will save you time, so you can return to soaking in the summer fun. Make a mocktail by substituting sparkling water for vodka. Clean and refreshing, without the next-day drag.
          INGREDIENTS
          • 2 slices of cucumber cut into 1/4-inch slices
          • 1 and 1/2 fresh basil leaves
          • 1 and 1/2 ounces vodka
          • 1 lemon
          • 1/4 ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice
          • Basil leaf for garnish
          • Ice
          • Sugar
          INSTRUCTIONS
          1. Put the cucumber and basil in a shaker and mix.
          2. Add a squeeze of lemon, vodka, and lime juice.
           
    3. Add ice and shake until chilled.
          4. Take a wedge of the lemon, rim, and dip the glass in sugar.
          5. Strain the concoction into a glass filled with fresh ice.
          6. Garnish with a basil leaf.
          7. Steak cucumber slice.

          • 2-1”-thick sliced country bread
          • 2 clove garlic, minced
          • 1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil
          • 2 medium cucumbers, thinly sliced
          • 4 c. diced tomatoes (heirloom, cherry, or grape)
          • 1 medium red onion, cut into 4 wedges
          • 2 tbsp. capers
          • 3 tbsp. red wine vinegar
          • 1 1/2 c. cubed fresh mozzarella
           
     
    • 1/2 c. fresh basil leaves, small bite-size pieces
          • Kosher salt
          • Freshly ground black pepper
          INSTRUCTIONS
          1. Heat the grill to medium-high and oil the grates. Brush bread and onion with oil and season with salt and pepper.
          2. Grill bread and veggies until bread is lightly toasted, 30 seconds to 1 minute per side, and onions are lightly charred and crisp-tender, 3 minutes per side.
          3. Transfer grilled bread and onion to a cutting board. Rub garlic on both cut sides of the bread, then let everything cool slightly.
          4. Next, cut bread into bite-size cubes, thinly slice cucumber, and chop onion.
          5. Whisk together oil, vinegar, and season with salt and pepper in a large enough bowl. Add bread cubes, cucumber, onion, tomatoes, mozzarella, capers and basil.
          Panzanella is a Tuscan chopped salad. This salad is a delicious summer meal and is filled with ripe, juicy tomatoes and crusty bread. A shower of fresh basil takes it over the top.

          Atrip to the peace and serenity of Montreat, North Carolina, may be just what your soul is longing for, surrounded by the stunning beauty of this little nook of nature. Traveling to Montreat from Cashiers is just under a two-hour trip north and makes a great day-trip destination while visiting the region. The small town is tucked on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Eastern rim of the Continental Divide and located on the western border of the Pisgah National Forest, north of Black Mountain. Montreat is void of any commercial development or traffic signals and where walking is considered one of the best ways to get around town.
           
    The small town is where Billy Graham, the well-known evangelist, lived until his death in 2018 at the age of 99. Graham and his late wife Ruth raised their five children in a 2,500-square-foot home purchased in 1940 on Mississippi Road. The home, currently on the market, has been made available as a vacation rental in recent years. Once Graham gained national and later international notoriety, the family built another home in Montreat to have more privacy.
          Montreat got its start over 125 years ago as a mountain retreat formed by Congregationalist minister John Collins, with funding for the project coming from candy manufacturer John Huyler. The town was incorporated in 1967; however, the name Montreat which sounds similar to the Canadian city of Montreal, actually has more humble origins as a blend of the word “mountain” and “retreat.” The town holds up to its moniker as it reflects the area’s majestic landscape while also serving as an ode to the lineage under the ownership of the Mountain Retreat Association.

          The Montreat Conference Center is a popular destination in the area hosting an estimated 30,000 visitors each year. The center stages more than 400 events annually. The property encompasses over 2,500 acres of protected wilderness. While exploring Montreat, most will encounter the property of Montreat College or the Montreat Conference Center. Visitors can navigate by following the signs; green signs on sites denote ownership by the conference center, while blue signage marks property operated by the college.
          Montreat is the main campus of Montreat College, with other campuses in Asheville, Charlotte and Black Mountain. The private Christian college, founded in 1916, offers four-year liberal arts degrees. Montreat College is home to one of more than a dozen frescoes by Benjamin Long throughout North Carolina. The “Return of the Prodigal” fresco is housed in the Chapel at Montreat College.
          Nature surrounds this small community which is perfect for hiking or camping. The Flat Creek flows through Montreat, where visitors can follow the Flat Creek Trail. Montreat has a network of an estimated 30 miles of trails, including the Graybeard Trail Hike. In addition, Lake Susan is owned by the Montreat Conference Center and is a picturesque backdrop in the middle of this beautiful town.
           
    Montreat is known for hosting a yearly festive July 4th parade through town. The small town of fewer than 2,000 people experiences a swell in population during the summer as vacationers spend time relaxing and enjoying the slower pace of this tranquil environment.
          While in Montreat, check out Ten Thousand Villages to find hand-crafted goods from artisans worldwide. The town’s motto, “a place set apart,” is certainly something all will find rings true in Montreat.

        How is the WiFi in your rentals?
          Local infrastructure is not the same here as it is in metropolitan neighborhoods. There area several communities that are impelenting fiber optic internet services, but most of our properties use wifi, which tends to be slower than the wifi in urban areas. We encourage our guests to take full advantage of the mountains and get out to explore and enjoy.
          Do you offer petfriendly rentals?
          Yes! We welcome dogs at many of our rentals. Please see our website for specific properties. There is a non-refundable pet fee.
          Are there any amenities offered?
          Yes, we have several properties that provide our guests access to community amenities and close proximity to public access activities.
          What activities are there nearby?
          There are many hiking trails for everybody - not to mention the waterfalls in the area and the unique shopping. Ask our rentals team or check out our blogs at landmarkvacations.com for more suggestions.
          What should I bring?
          Your toothbrushes and personal care items. Landmark Vacation Rentals prides itself on its professional laundry service, which provides bed linens and bathroom towels. A starter kit is in the home when you arrive that includes coffee, dish soap, dishwasher pods, a scrubbing sponge, laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, and hand soap.
          What about wildlife?
          Western North Carolina has abundant wildlife (bears, deer, turkey, snakes, and more). Please do not feed the bears! Garbage disposal instructions are provided for each property. Garbage needs to be properly bagged; most homes do have garbage pickup. Please help us keep you and our wildlife safe by following our instructions.
          What is your cancellation policy?
          Please refer to our website for exact details - these may vary from property to property.
          What if I arrive late for check-in?
          If you are staying at a property with keyless entry, you will receive a text with your door code when your rental is ready and you can go directly to the property. If you are staying at a property with a keyed entry, we provide three after-hours check-in locations. You will be directed to the most convenient location for your rental property, where you will pick up your check-in packet. Your packet will include printed directions to your rental. Please follow the provided directions as GPS isn’t always reliable on the mountain.
