Mowing Tips for Spring There are more than 30 million acres of lawns across the United States. The Professional Landcare Network (PLANET), offers the following mowing tips. Give your lawn mower a check up.

• Once the pool is set up, ensure high levels of supervision.

Make sure the blades are sharp and the oil has been changed. Also, drain last season’s gas and use fresh gas.

• Fence portable pools and encourage your neighbors to do the same.

Don’t scalp your yard.

• Cover larger portable pools and put access ladders away when adults are not present. • Install alarms on doors leading from the house to the pool area that will alert you when someone enters the pool area. • Teach children to swim, float and other basic lifesaving skills; do not consider young children “drownproof” because they have had swimming lessons.

Don’t cut your grass too short, particularly for cool season grass. Taller grass results in a deeper root system and a lawn that is less likely to encourage invasive weeds. It also protects your lawn from scorching.

Avoid mowing when the grass is wet. Mowing wet grass can encourage mold and fungus and will quickly dull your lawn mower blades and chew up your lawn.

Don’t compensate by over cutting. Never mow more than one-third of the grass leaf at a time. If circumstances arise where a lawn gets too tall and you have to cut off a lot, do it in several mowings with three or more days between cuttings.

Be safe. Keep children and pets away. Wear closed-toe shoes and long pants, as well as eye protection. Never cut the lawn when it’s raining, lightening, or when grass is slippery. Do not push a lawn mower onto the pavement. The lawn keeps objects from being hurled at a high speed; there is no such protection on the pavement.

Do your homework. Determine your grass type and the best height for optimal health. Also, read the operating guide for your mower. Make sure you understand all of its safety features prior to use.

If you plan to put your home on the market this spring or summer, you might be looking for the most cost-effective renovations to set your house apart from the competition. Assuming you've already taken care of the two top rooms to renovate - kitchen and bathroom - what's your next move?

Three words: master suite upgrades. Americans spend a lot of time in the bedroom. The master suite is, arguably, the area of the house where you most want to feel like the king or queen of your domain. After you've wowed potential buyers with a great kitchen and bathroom, a beautiful master suite could be the feature that seals the deal. A mid-range master suite addition recoups 67.5 percent of its cost at the time of resale, according to Remodeling Magazine's Cost vs. Value Report. Fortunately, you can create a big impact on a master suite with a modest remodeling budget.

Little things mean a lot Often, sellers focus on big-picture issues and overlook the small details that win buyers' hearts. For example, while it's important to paint the walls a neutral, appealing color, don't forget to repaint baseboards, window trim, ceilings and inside closets, too - all significantly affect the overall look of a room. Even when you account for the extra time and paint needed for trim,

painting remains one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to freshen a room's appearance. Be sure to repaint the master bathroom in a color that complements the master bedroom. Add decadent but cost-effective touches like plush towels, a towel-warming rack and an upgraded shower head and faucets. Consider the shower door. Is it old and shabby-looking with glass that has become hazy? Replacing it is a simple, quick fix that will put a bright face on the shower stall. Swap out a straight shower curtain rod for a curved one that greatly increases the spaciousness of the shower area. Add light, airy curtains to make the room look bigger and brighter, luxurious bedding to impart a restful atmosphere, and you'll have created a master suite that's sure to be an asset when it's time to sell.
