The Long and the Short of It Remember when you were a kid counting down the final 25 days of school and they seemed to take forevvvvver? Homeowners, green homebuilders, remodelers, roofers, even environmentalists, now have something in common. They all like bringing passive natural light into homes with tubular skylights that, while inexpensive, are highly efficient and Energy Star qualified. Tim Johnson, product manager with Velux America, says Energy Star qualified Sun Tunnel skylights admit passive natural light (light without the heat emitted by electrical sources) while admitting very little of the heat that windows and other light sources produce. “They capture light very efficiently through a weatherproof dome on the roof,” he says. “The light travels into the home through highly reflective or flexible tubing, which makes it easy to bypass obstructions in the attic, ending at a diffuser in the ceiling that looks like a traditional in-ceiling light fixture.” In many cases, they are less expensive than traditional skylights. They start at about $200. Some “super efficient” models meet the federal government’s energy efficiency criteria qualifying them for federal tax credits of up to 30 percent of the purchase and installation cost. Show Me The Savings The Department of Energy reports water heating can account for 14 to 25 percent of the energy consumed in a residential home. “Green” advocates are touting solar power as a viable option to reduce those costs and applaud Congress’ decision to extend the federal solar tax credit for another eight years. Through the tax credit program, it’s reported homeowners can recoup 30 percent of the total installed cost of a solar thermal water heating system. On average, if you install a solar water heater, your water bills should drop 50-80 percent. Will the general public make the switch? With average installation projected to cost $6,500 to $11,000 - and some complex systems running as much as $12,000 - it’s unclear what percentage of the population Congress hopes will sign up for the tax credit.

‘Air’ On The Side of Safety The U.S. Department of Energy says properly inflated tires can improve fuel economy by 3.3 percent and help you save 9 cents per gallon at the pump. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association estimates that underinflated tires contribute to more than 600 fatalities and 33,000 injuries a year. Fewer than 8 percent of vehicles have four properly inflated tires, according to a Rubber Manufacturers Association-sponsored national survey.

Be tire smart – play your “P.A.R.T.” That stands for pressure, alignment, rotation, and tread, all key elements of monthly tire maintenance. * Pressure: Check tire pressure monthly before you drive with a tire gauge and inflate to vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. * Alignment: Misalignment of wheels can cause uneven and rapid tread wear. * Rotation: Rotate every 5,000 to 8,000 miles to help you achieve more uniform wear. * Tread: Bald tires are dangerous. From October 2007 to last December, the market lost nearly $3 trillion in retirement savings.1 Many who were counting on their 401(k)s don't even read their account statements anymore.

The Truth About Social Security But other factors have muddied the waters for mapping a course toward retirement. People are living longer. An American born in 1955 was expected to live to age 69, on average. Forty years later, life expectancy was 76.2 This is good news; but, we need to prepare for more years of retirement. And, if you thought Social Security would take care of you, think again. Last year, the maximum monthly benefit was $2,1853 — not enough for many of you to live comfortably. While there are no easy solutions, the purchase of a life insurance policy can guarantee4 the protection of your loved ones and additionally supplement your retirement savings,5 if the death benefit is no longer needed. Leaving a Legacy Life insurance’s primary purpose is to provide guaranteed death benefit protection, which can provide a tax-free legacy to your loved ones. But, permanent life also carries many living benefits. Cash value is money that accumulates within the policy, tax deferred. This means you do not pay taxes on any of the accumulation within the policy. In addition, you can access that money tax free though policy loans.5,6 These same funds can also be used for college expenses, as collateral for a small business loan, or any other happily anticipated or unexpected event. In addition to the death benefit protection provided by life insurance, it can also be used to supplement your retirement income. As such, it can be a vital piece of the complex puzzle of retirement planning.
