According to Cincinnati Children's, each year in the United States, 15 to 20 children under the age of 11 die, and nearly 15,000 are injured because of falls from windows.
Most of these children are under three years old. Children living in apartment buildings have the highest number of window fall incidents — five times more than children living in other residences.
Window screens are an important part of home comfort during warmer months, but they should never be considered a safety barrier. Many homeowners are surprised to learn that standard window screens are designed only to keep insects out, not to prevent falls or provide security.
One of the biggest risks involves young children. Screens can give a false sense of security when windows are open for ventilation. Standing water is another summertime issue. Birdbaths, buckets, kiddie pools, and clogged gutters can attract mosquitoes and bacteria. Pools and ponds should always be monitored closely around children and pets to prevent accidents.
