EMCEE - TANYA M. ACKER A co-host of the twice Emmynominated Hot Bench (CBS Television Distribution), Tanya Acker is also host of The Tanya Acker Show podcast. Tanya is an experienced civil litigator who has represented a wide array of clients, from major automobile manufacturers in high stakes product liability litigation to media companies in hotly contested trade secret disputes. She has been a featured commentator on various broadcasts (Good Morning America, Entertainment Tonight, The O’Reilly Factor, Larry King Live, CNN Reports, Anderson Cooper 360, Your World With Neil Cavuto, CNBC Reports, HLN’s Special Report, Great Britain’s GMTV and Sky News, among others) and has guest co-hosted CNBC’s Power Lunch. C Magazine included her in an election season profile on noteworthy California women in politics and Women Inc. recently named her one of 2019’s Most Influential Corporate Board Directors. Tanya also has contributed to the Huffington Post and served as a Temporary Judge in the Los Angeles County Superior Court Temporary Judge Program. While a student at Yale Law School, Tanya represented low-income women in family law cases and served as a teaching assistant in Constitutional Law and Civil Procedure courses. She also worked at the Office of White House Counsel, the Civil Rights Division in the United States Department of Justice, and the private law firms Irell & Manella, O’Melveny & Myers, and Williams & Connolly; at Williams & Connolly, she assisted President Clinton’s personal lawyers with press interviews, worked on the preparation of Congressional testimony for pending product liability legislation, and researched First Amendment issues. After graduating from Yale, Tanya served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Dorothy Wright Nelson on the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. After her clerkship, the Office of the Solicitor General in the U.S.

Department of Justice awarded Tanya a Bristow Fellowship. While working as a Bristow Fellow, Tanya drafted Supreme Court briefs and helped prepare the Solicitor General for oral argument before the High Court. Among the cases on which Tanya worked was Clinton v. Jones, where she assisted both the Solicitor General and President Clinton’s personal attorneys in preparing for oral argument. In private practice, Tanya’s legal work spanned a broad variety of matters, from civil litigation involving public and private entities, to various constitutional cases, to the provision of business counseling and advice. She also maintained a commitment to pro bono work, receiving the ACLU’s First Amendment Award for her successful representation of a group of homeless individuals against the City of Santa Barbara. Tanya later worked in entertainment industry outreach for the Kerry/Edwards presidential campaign and as Deputy Campaign Manager for the Los Angeles mayoral campaign of City Councilman Bernard C. Parks. After that, she worked as the General Counsel of a company that manufactured emissions control products. Tanya received her B.A. degree from Howard University in 1992, where she graduated summa cum laude and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She was awarded a Luard Scholarship for study at St. Anne’s College at Oxford University, and served there as the coeditor-in-chief of the Oxford University Women’s Magazine. At Yale Law School, she was awarded an Earl Warren Scholarship by the NAACP and a Coker Fellowship by the Yale faculty. Tanya maintains an active involvement in various philanthropic, civic and business organizations. A volunteer with Love Takes Root, she has traveled to Haiti to work in a clinic and orphanage founded by that organization. She is a member of the Beverly Hills West (CA) chapter of The Links, Incorporated and additionally serves on the boards of Public Counsel; the Western Justice Center; the Boy Scouts of America; PacWest Bancorp; and also as a trustee of the Pacific Battleship Center, which operates the Battleship USS IOWA Museum. She is also a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy and the Yale Law Fund Board.

BUILDING STRONG Through direct services, legal action and advocacy, Public Counsel defends the vulnerable, shapes just policy, and advances civil rights. Our multifaceted approach allows Public Counsel to stand as a force for justice in California and nationally. Founded in 1970, Public Counsel works to protect the legal rights of disadvantaged children; represents immigrants who have been the victims of torture, persecution, domestic violence, trafficking, and other crimes; and fosters economic justice by providing individuals and institutions in underserved communities with access to quality legal representation.

GER COMMUNITIES Through a pro bono model that leverages the talents and dedication of thousands of attorney and law student volunteers, Public Counsel builds stronger communities in Los Angeles and throughout the nation. In 2019, Public Counsel provided legal services to 15,000 people and 300 nonprofit organizations. Of the 5,700 people to whom we provided full representation, 3,800, or two-thirds, achieved legal successes, resulting in $10 million in revenue and savings for our clients. We also obtained positive outcomes for millions of people through our class action lawsuits. Our staff of 130 achieved these results in partnership with 5,800 volunteers.

CONS UM ER RI GHTS A N D E C O N O MI C JUSTICE Public Counsel’s Consumer Rights & Economic Justice Project champions the rights of consumers, including representing families who risk losing their homes and livelihoods to fraud and providing legal help to people facing bankruptcy. The project assists with a wide variety of consumer matters, including consumer fraud, unfair business practices, foreclosure and real estate fraud. The Debtor Assistance Project is part of Consumer Rights & Economic Justice, and assists with several types of bankruptcyrelated matters.

Dante Venegas struggled with student loans for 27 years, with his original $28,000 loan ballooning to over $300,0000. Despite his tireless efforts – following job opportunities to cities across California, including the Bay Area, Sacramento, San Diego and Los Angeles – he was unable to make a dent in his student loans. Earlier this year, attorneys from Public Counsel and Greenberg Glusker helped to relieve the 55-year old substitute teacher of $327,000 in student loan debt in his bankruptcy case!

C HI L D REN ’S R I G H T S PR O JE C T

Public Counsel’s Adoption Project recently celebrated the 20th Anniversary of National Adoption Day! Public Counsel was instrumental in helping to create the very first Adoption Day in Los Angeles County, before it became a national event. For the past 20 years, judges, social workers, attorneys, adoption advocates and policy makers across the country have come together to help nearly 75,000 children find their forever homes.

Public Counsel’s Children’s Rights Project expands children’s rights through litigation, lobbying and direct services – serving hundreds of foster youth, students and adoptive children, and fighting for educational equity for students of color in underresourced schools. The project works to empower children, youth and families and meet their wide range of needs in civil matters, with a multidisciplinary staff providing free legal and other advocacy services.

C OM M U N I T Y D E V E LO PME N T Public Counselâ€™s Community Development Project builds strong foundations for healthy, vibrant, economically stable communities, particularly in lowincome communities of color in Los Angeles, by supporting neighborhood nonprofits and small businesses; supporting early care and education providers; strengthening the health care safety net; building foundations for financial independence; advancing affordable housing and tenant protections; and supporting community-led efforts to advance racial and economic justice.

Public Counsel supported our partners in the LA Street Vendor campaign to win the passage of a resolution at the LA County Board of Supervisors to create a Sidewalk Vending Pilot Program for LA County. The program includes a $1 million investment in the needs of vendors, the equipment they need, and appropriate education and outreach. The initiative was championed by Supervisor Hilda Solis and passed unanimously in September 2020.

HOM EL ES SN E SS PR E V E N T I O N Public Counsel’s Homelessness Prevention Project serves individuals that are at highrisk of becoming chronically homeless. Through services such as tenant counseling, eviction defense, fighting fines for quality-oflife infractions and misdemeanors, and government benefits advocacy, Public Counsel contributes to the creation of a strong social safety net in our local communities.

For twenty years, Maria Escobero (right) always paid her rent on time and never had any issues with her landlord. But when a new owner bought the property, he informed her that he had not received her last two months of rental payments and gave her three days to repay the rent or face eviction. Fortunately, Ms. Escobero always took a photo of her rent payment before submitting it, and with the support of Public Counsel Staff Attorney Alisa Randell (left) she refused to repay the rent and went to trial – giving credible testimony and convincing a jury that she shouldn’t be evicted!

I M M I GRA NT S’ R I G H T S PR O JE C T Public Counsel’s Immigrants’ Rights Project is fighting for a world where all (im)migrants live with dignity, power, and opportunity. Its multidisciplinary team collaborates with clients and communities to fight fearlessly for legal protections and a just immigration system. The project represents individuals seeking asylum, children who have been abused and neglected who qualify for special humanitarian relief, deported veterans who have been unjustly removed from the U.S., and detained immigrants facing deportation. Over the past four years, its staff have been on the frontlines responding to the harmful policies of the Trump Administration – mobilizing to LAX in response to the Travel Ban, holding emergency legal clinics to support DACA recipients, and assisting families who were torn apart by the family separation policy.

Earlier this year, Public Counsel helped Joel Diaz Rincon, a 51-year-old deported U.S. veteran, re-enter the United States after nearly 20 years of being separated from his family, including his children and grandchildren, based on a legally erroneous immigration court decision. Joel is the second veteran to return home as part of Public Counsel’s Deported Veterans Project since its recent launch. Blaine Sullivan is a veteran who faced unimaginable physical injuries after an IED blew up near him in Afghanistan. For the last 10 years, his mother Stacey has been his primary caregiver to him through dozens of surgeries and limb reconstruction, and to his child, as a result of the Veteran Administration’s Caregiver Program. Despite his ongoing physical challenges, Blaine and Stacey lost their status in the program and Public Counsel, along with Paul Hastings, is fighting to ensure they get an opportunity to appeal their case and get the support from the VA that they clearly deserve.

Public Counsel’s Center for Veterans’ Advancement, a national leader in veterans’ advocacy, is driven by its core mission to uphold our nation’s promise to veterans and their families. CVA provides direct representation, or representation through pro bono partners, to veterans and their families. CVA provides legal representation at both the local and national levels, and coordinates its work with efforts underway to establish special “Veterans’ Courts” in Northern and Southern California designed to meet the unique needs of returning veterans. CVA also manages legal clinics, including one of the largest pro bono advocacy programs in the United States.

Public Counsel’s Opportunity Under Law uses a model of community-based impact litigation to develop campaigns to eliminate the major barriers to opportunity. Using a combination of litigation, organizing and outreach, and communications strategies, OUL seeks to push the law to advance and vindicate affirmative rights – the right to education, housing, fair employment, necessary services, and equal treatment under the law. Too many communities face barriers that cut their members off from opportunity and place them at risk of poverty, incarceration, and life-long struggles for basic sustenance. We fight to ensure that every person has the chance for a meaningful, safe, productive life.

Over the past two and a half years, Public Counsel has been honored to represent a group of courageous DACA recipients who fought the Trump Administration’s cruel and unjust decision to end the DACA program. Their suit, filed as Garcia v. United States, resulted in a nationwide injunction that blocked the Trump Administration from ending DACA for over two years. This June, they achieved their ultimate goal - victory in the United States Supreme Court.

W OM EN A N D G I R LS’ R I G H T S

Rosie is an administrative assistant who faced discrimination at her workplace after having a child. She was written up for absences and threatened with firing if she took any more time off for medical appointments. Upon returning from leave, the company refused to allow her access to the lactation room, to work from home part-time despite continuing complications from childbirth, and denied her the standard annual salary increase. WGR intervened and got her the accommodations she needed at work and a settlement to compensate for their discriminatory treatment and retaliation based on sex.

The Audrey Irmas Project for Women and Girls’ Rights was created thanks to a generous grant from the Audrey Irmas Foundation for Social Justice. The project aims to advance equality, economic justice and opportunity for low-income women and girls by utilizing direct legal services, policy advocacy, impact litigation, and community education. The project is currently focused on three key areas – workplace justice, supporting women entrepreneurs, and opportunity for girls in K-12 education – and works in partnership with Public Counsel’s other program areas to address the unique vulnerabilities and challenges facing female clients and to deepen Public Counsel’s systemic work on gender issues across program areas.

In a class action brought by three refugee mothers, a federal judge orders the government to provide immediate mental health treatment to immigrant families torn apart by the Trump Administration’s family separation policy.

Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals issues a groundbreaking ruling that all children have a constitutional right to a “basic minimum education” ensuring that they have access to literacy. The class action was filed by Detroit public school children in 2016 against the State of Michigan.
