ow is not normally a word that I would use. It’s more the language of my grandchildren but I think it is apt when I look back on the 2025 season at Guards Polo Club. We played 759 games this season, a recordbreaking number. When you average it out across the season that is just over five games a day – every day! A remarkable statistic and testament to the hard work and focus of the entire team at Guards Polo Club. Highlights for me this year in the Club’s 70th anniversary were many. DREAMING OF ICELAND Glacier Journey’s Adventure of a Lifetime For many, a trip to Iceland is the culmination of dream; a long-awaited journey. And once you are finally here, the daunting task of choosing what to do, where to go and what to see begins. The good news is that Iceland is a fairly compact little country and many of the most sought-after gems of Icelandic nature, particularly on the south coast, are within easy reach of the capital. One of south Iceland’s most awe-inspiring natural phenomena is the formidable Vatnajökull Glacier that harbours no less than six volcanoes within its icy depths. The vast glacier spans a large portion of the south coast driving route and a visit to the glacier is undeniably one of the top “must-do’s” that should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Let the adventure begin Glacier Journey is a small local, family run company that offers a variety of year-round snowmobile and jeep tours to the glacier and has received many glowing reviews over the years. Even if you have never had any experience driving a snowmobile, the friendly guides at Glacier Journey are with you all the way– and learning how to drive a snowmobile is all part of the fun. At the base camp you will receive warm overalls, helmets, gloves and a face mask that you can take home with you as a souvenir and then you’re off to explore the mesmerizing beauty of Europe’s largest glacier by snowmobile.

JUST INCREDIBLE! Doing this trip was one of the highlights of our trip to Iceland. The people are friendly and seeing and driving on the Glacier was just superb. I cannot wait to get back to Iceland and book more trips with these guys. I would recommend doing this to anyone. TravellingOrange TRIPADVISOR
A magical-mystical world of ice The 1st of November to the beginning of March marks a very special moment in the year when it‘s cold enough to go ice cave exploring! Glacier Journey offers a 2.5 hour ice cave tour with a tremendous opportunity to explore the glacier inside and out. Experienced guides will lead the way into one of the ice caves that form at the edge of the glacier when the temps drop down below freezing and these icy-blue, fairy tale caves are safe to enter. The ice caves are ever changing but always remain beautiful and interesting and never cease to amaze.
Small groups and families welcome Glacier Journey caters to all sizes of groups, from company incentive tours to small groups and personal, private tours for the whole family. Glacier Journey has set goals to provide good service and a warm welcome to all guests. That is why it was and is so important to them to fix the access to their base camp. They want to be able to welcome everyone that wants to come and adventure with them despite having mobility issues. They are proud to share their adventures with all their guests of all abilities and hope to encourage others in the industry to do the same. See you soon on a Glacier Journey tour for the ultimate trip of a lifetime!

Guards Polo Club Membership benefits in 2025
T
he Membership team, headed up by Vanessa Cumming, created a varied calendar of events for Members throughout 2025. Exclusive trips this year included a behind-the-scenes visit to the Household Cavalry in Knightsbridge, London, plus lunch in the officers’ mess. There was also an opportunity to visit the Combermere Barracks in Windsor and attend the Commandant’s Parade at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. A couple of visits to Christie’s in London proved popular, while Christie’s expert Veronica Scarpati’s visit to the Clubhouse in late August was a sell-out success. Vanessa has also built up a strong relationship with the events team at neighbouring Cumberland Lodge. The result is that Members receive regular invitations to Cumberland Conversation events with guest speakers. At the time of writing, Members will be heading to this iconic location in the Park to attend an exclusive tour and afternoon
tea. These are just some of the exclusive events that have been created for our Members, running alongside a packed summer of outstanding polo and first-class hospitality. To find out more about Social Membership at Guards Polo Club please email Vanessa at membership@ guardspoloclub.com or go to https://www. guardspoloclub.com/membership/socialmembership S

Club continues to give in 2025 Another fantastic year for Guards Polo Club's charity goals
G
uards Polo Club had a standout season with regard to polo. A record number of games, an impressive number of team entries and an increased cohort of players. The Club also stood out with its charitable endeavours. National and local organisations benefited from a range of events from early spring through to late summer. Not surprisingly the standout event of the year from a charitable perspective was HRH The Prince of Wales’s Royal Charity Polo Day, once again sponsored by Out-Sourcing Inc. This remarkable day raised £1.1million for 10 charities personally selected by TRH The Prince and
Princess of Wales. The charities’ spokesperson, Helen Griffiths of the Fields In Trust charity said on the day: “. . . in a fundraising landscape as challenging as this one the generous support from today’s sponsors will help us all have even more impact in our respective communities.” Out-Sourcing Inc. also renewed its support for Power of Polo during the Royal Windsor Cup tournament. This wonderful charity, whose motto is Change Your Line, successfully uses polo to help improve the lives of both disadvantaged young people and military veterans. Another big fundraiser was the Access Bank Polo Day – see page 68. This remarkable, long-standing, three-way G UA R D S P O LO C LU B T E N G OA L M AG A Z I N E

partnership between the bank, Fifth Chukker and UNICEF generated enough funds in 2025 to support the construction of 60 additional, fully equipped school room blocks at the charity’s school complex in Kaduna, northern Nigeria. The Club’s Ladies Day in early July, saw a welcome return for the cancer support charity Look Good Feel Better. Another cancer charity, Macmillan, was a returning benefactor later in the year when the Club hosted its popular Coffee Morning in the Clubhouse – see page 74. Once again military charities were supported throughout the year. Profits from an exclusive calendar of Members’ events were donated to the Household Cavalry Foundation. Meanwhile both The Not Forgotten Association and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, had fundraising stands at the Club during key events. In addition Searcys continued to sell RV1 gin in the Clubhouse in support of military veterans. The annual dog show on the Lawn raised funds for Dogs for Good, with TV personality Kirsty Gallacher presenting the prizes. Meanwhile, a local Riding for the Disabled organisation, Quest in Chobham, were the recipients of all funds at the Club’s first quiz night of the year. The second Clubhouse quiz of 2025 supported all those living locally to the Club who are battling the effects of a multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Funds were donated to the East Berkshire Group of the MS Society. Next season the Club looks forward to welcoming back many of these charities. We will also have some new organisations joining us, including Thames Valley Hospice – see page 24. S 30

So we were deeply saddened to learn in late October of her unexpected death at the age of 88 following a fall at home. Dame Jilly mesmerised everyone she met on the two occasions that she came to Smith’s Lawn in 2025. Her first visit was as the Club’s guest of honour for the Ladies’ Charity Polo Day. This indomitable Dame was happy to be photographed with young and old alike – the launch of Rivals as a Disney+ TV Series had brought Dame Jilly a new tranche of fans. She didn’t even balk at having her picture taken in our version of Rupert Campbell-Black’s car (if you know you know!). Dame Jilly’s affection towards the players in the 22-goal ladies 32
Dame Jilly mesmerised everyone she met on the two occasions that she came to Smith’s Lawn in 2025 final was evident to all – there were hugs for everyone – and the pictures highlight how delighted the players were to meet this legendary writer. Just a few weeks later the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) extended an invitation to Dame Jilly for their International Day at Smith’s Lawn. There was a real buzz at the Club when she

arrived – stopping to say hello to the brewery’s Shire Horses who had just paraded around The Queen’s Ground before she spoke to any of the HPA’s VIPs. Such an affinity with these animals was not a surprise as Dame Jilly loved animals as much as people. She wrote many non-fiction books including Animals at War and was a passionate advocate of the Animals in War Memorial in Park Lane, London, which was opened in 2004. In fact, Dame Jilly’s love of animals – and people – shone through during both visits. She had a vitality and a zest for life that few of us can replicate. She was a remarkable woman who made a lasting impression, whether you had met her for just five minutes or had known her for a lifetime. Our deepest sympathy to her children, Emily and Felix, her five grandchildren and the wider Cooper family. Our thoughts also go out to Dame Jilly’s many friends within the equestrian world and to everyone across the globe who has so loved her books and her wonderful characters. S

ay Elizabeth Witherspoon is an artist based in Denver, Colorado, holding a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology. She created her first polo painting, titled “Focused”, while attending school and became a certified family counselor upon graduation in1996.
In 1998, Kay Witherspoon made a significant career transition by moving from her counseling profession to focus entirely on her passion for art. She expanded her office into an art studio and classroom, creating a space where she could both create her own artwork, and teach others. This transition was marked by the launch of her website, www.kaywitherspoon.com, which served as a platform to showcase her work and connect with a wider audience. Also 1998, Kay Witherspoon’s painting ”Focused” won the Founder’s Award for oil painting from the American Academy of Equine Art in Lexington, KY. That same year, she was granted permission to photograph the Federation of International Polo’s World Championship in Santa Barbara, CA. To enhance her photography and subsequent paintings she studied the rules of play, deepening her understanding of the sport.

In the years that followed, Witherspoon became a Signature member of the American Academy of Equine Art in Lexington, Kentucky and of the Society of Animal Artists. She created ten additional polo paintings, many of which have been featured on the covers of polo event programs across the US or used as polo event awards. Her fine art paper and canvas polo prints have sold globally, reaching collectors and players in Japan, South Africa, Barbados, Canada, England and more.
Including her foray into polo art, Witherspoon broadened her artistic repertoire to encompass landscapes, and a diverse range of wildlife subjects. Her portfolio features mountain sheep, moose, elk, wild horses, and even a dramatic horse stampede in front of a forest fire. In 2005, Kay was commissioned to create twenty-six of her stunning Aspen landscape paintings for installation at the Little Nell in Aspen, Colorado. This project showcased her talent for capturing the beauty of the natural landscape and contributed to her growing reputation as an artist. The installation at such a prestigious location highlights her work’s connection to the picturesque scenery of Colorado.

CELFER REFLECTIONS RG A NO ON A GREAT NOSAES SEASON Sarkis Gabrelian, patron of The Mirror polo team, concluded a remarkable season by winning the Club’s Team of the Year Award. Diana Butler caught up with Sarkis after the awards evening to find out more about his remarkable polo journey IM AGE S : IM AGE S OF P OLO
How did you first get involved in polo? My daughter Ameliia asked me to answer this question in as much detail as possible! My wife and I decided that our daughter should be able to ride as well as [the late] Queen Elizabeth. After talking to friends we were recommended the excellent Cool Hooves Polo Academy, run by Phil Meadows. I would regularly drive my daughter to and from the Academy. Then, one day in 2023, I found myself wondering why I was just sitting in the car reading a book instead of trying a polo lesson myself? Immediately after the first lesson, I booked the next one and the next and so on every day – in the snow, rain, and wind, in all the colours of the beautiful English weather! So, in short, my polo career began thanks to my smart, beautiful, and wonderful daughter, Ameliia.” Were you involved with horses in any
way before you discovered polo and how many horses do you own today? “Regretfully, I can say that I have never had anything to do with horses before I picked up a polo stick. But it is never too late and love knows no age! To answer the second part of your question most people reading this article will know, I think, that the number of horses in polo doesn’t matter if you want to constantly progress. I may want to sell or keep half of my horses for my future polo academy, but to answer your question briefly, there are currently approximately 30 horses in The Mirror stables.” What was your highlight of the 2025 season and why? “Every time I go out on the field it’s a big event because you never know what will happen in the next hour. You can win or lose, but the most important thing is to have fun playing this beautiful game of polo.” G UA R D S P O LO C LU B T E N G OA L M AG A Z I N E

Where does the name The Mirror come from? “When I realised that I was addicted to polo, I realised that I had to be honest with myself and the only way to be honest with yourself is to look in the mirror!” What are your polo plans for 2026? “My plan is simple: to improve my riding and stick and ball skills and play as many polo games as possible with the best players.” Do you have an ultimate polo goal? “I think all polo players have the same goal - to enjoy the game and win as many tournaments as possible.” According to the local paper you have polo plans for Upper Culham Farm in Berkshire. What can you tell us about them? “Yes, it’s true that I purchased a farm in l a te 2 0 24 . I h ave a l re a d y re ce i ve d permission to build stables, polo fields, a 40
“ All polo players have the same goal - to enjoy the game and win as many tournaments as possible” swimming pool for horses, and more.” Will you play polo in the winter or do you focus on other sports? “In the winter I play in various countries where outside polo is possible.” Will you encourage your daughters to play? Do they have ponies already? “I don’t mind girls playing polo, but it’s important to listen to and observe each child individually as they don’t know what they want and their actions are influenced by their parents’ desires. I never push them towards something that I personally enjoy, as I see
G UA R D S P O LO C LU B T E N G OA L M AG A Z I N E
that some children have a natural inclination towards science or music and so certain sports may not be suitable for them. Therefore, it’s crucial to approach each child individually.” Away from polo what does your day-to-day life look like? “After I started playing polo my life changed completely – maybe it even became a little boring – in the sense that I don’t have as many activities as I used to. When you play polo a lot it’s difficult to plan things because you don’t know if you’ll win or lose, or if you’ll make it to the semi-finals if you lose. B u t to a n swe r yo u r q u e s t i o n m o re particularly, I enjoy spending time with my family and now I have a lot of work to do on my farm.” Finally, please can you tell me one thing about yourself that might surprise people? “I sing very well.” S

Guards Polo Club brought its 70th season to a close in a real blaze of glory. The Clubhouse was transformed into a mid-West saloon bar that would not have looked out of place in an old-school, Hollywood western. The events team had worked its magic, collating an array of brilliant props, such as saloon bar doors and a dummy shooting gallery, instantly adding to the wild west atmosphere. Guests got in on the act too, with Stetsons and boot lace ties replacing more traditional attire, while cowboy boots paired perfectly with sequins and LBDs. Even the most reticent guest could join in the fun thanks to a box of help-yourself sheriff badges, although everyone knew the Chairman was the night’s chief sheriff! Head Chef, Sam Seedhouse added plenty of cowboy flavours to the menu, ensuring even the fussiest cowboy would ride home on a full belly. All that was missing was a campfire but no one wanted to risk the fire alarm drowning out the DJ! 44

arlier this year Guards Polo Club’s first Indian Polo Day brought a real flavour of Jaipur to Smith’s Lawn. With HH The Maharaja of Jaipur as both the Club’s guest of honour and leader of the Jaipur Polo Team, the result was an evocative day packed full of style, elegance and culture. So what is the story behind this incredibly vibrant Indian city, home to two outstanding polo clubs and centuries of history and tradition. Jaipur appears to rise from the plains of Rajasthan. It is a city awash in blush pink, with its palaces shimmering like rose quartz under a hot sun. Known as the “Pink City,” Jaipur brilliantly blends stunning architecture with bustling bazaars and astounding culture with extraordinary heritage. In fact Jaipur is not just a destination for the traveller; it is an immersion into the soul of India. The city’s story dates back to 1727, when HH Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II commissioned a new capital for his growing kingdom. Dissatisfied with the fortressed
AMBER FORT
Perched atop a rugged hill, the Amber Fort is built from pale yellow and pink sandstone. Mighty walls conceal mirror-clad halls, frescoed chambers, and marble courtyards. This stunning fort is a principal tourist attraction in Jaipur, offering views across Maota Lake.
Jaipur was painted the familiar terracotta pink in 1876 to welcome HRH The Prince of Wales, later HM King Edward Vll hills of Amber, he envisioned a city governed by science and splendour. Guided by the principles of Vedic architecture and the wisdom of Bengali architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, the city was designed with grand boulevards, nine blocks symbolising the planets, and wide avenues. However, this remarkably beautiful city did not start out pink. It was painted the familiar terracotta pink in 1876 to welcome HRH The Prince of Wales, later HM King Edward Vll, who was on an extensive tour of the Indian subcontinent. The colour signified hospitality and it remains a significant feature of the city to this day. The architecture is a blend of Rajput and Mughal influences, with buildings adorned with intricate latticework, frescoes, and domes. Many landmarks in this most breathtaking of cities remain to remind us of Jaipur’s majestic past. 56

CITY PALACE
In the heart of Jaipur, the City Palace complex fuses Mughal and Rajasthani styles. Its courtyards and gateways are perfect blends of marble and mosaics. The Chandra Mahal is still home to Jaipur’s Royal Family, while the Mubarak Mahal hosts a museum featuring royal costumes and artefacts.
HAWA MAHAL
The Palace of Winds is Jaipur’s most iconic façade. A five-storey honeycomb of 953 windows—jharokhas—designed for the royal women to observe street festivities unseen. The pink sandstone glows at sunrise, and the breeze through its latticework provides a cool retreat during the city’s sweltering summers.

TEMPLES AND SACRED SPACES
Jaipur encourages both reflection and reverence among its many sacred sites. From the tranquil Govind Dev Ji Temple in the City Palace to the ancient Garh Ganesh or the hilltop temples of Galta Ji (the “Monkey Temple”), there are multiple locations for peace and serenity.
JANTAR MANTAR
A UNESCO World Heritage site, Jantar Mantar is an astronomical garden unlike any other. Giant sculptural instruments measure the heavens with startling precision, testament to HH Jai Singh II’s fascination with astronomy. The words themselves translate from Sanskrit to mean calculation instruments. 58

THE BAZAARS
In complete contrast to the peace of the temples, stepping into Jaipur’s bazaars is to enter an explosion of colour and craftsmanship. Johari Bazaar, with its glittering rows of gemstones and gold, is a jewel lover’s paradise. Meanwhile, Bapu Bazaar is a kaleidoscope of block-printed textiles, vibrant saris, leather jootis (sandals) and hand-crafted souvenirs. Of course visitors should not avoid the art of bargaining. Gentle haggling is as much an experience as the shopping itself. Most bazaars in Jaipur are open from 11am – 7pm but do check before you visit as some have specific closing days, eg Bapu Bazaar is closed on Sundays.

CULINARY DELIGHTS
Jaipur’s cuisine is a blend of spices, textures, and centuries-old traditions. Sample the famous dal baati churma—lentils, baked wheat balls, and sweet crumbled bread—or appreciate a fiery laal maas, a Rajasthani lamb curry with red chillies. The city’s sweet tooth is satisfied with ghewar, a honeycomb dessert, and mawa kachori, stuffed with nuts and cardamom. Check out Jaipur’s street food too. Crispy kachoris, spicy samosas, and cooling lassi served in earthenware cups.
FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS
The city’s calendar is filled with vibrant festivals. Two of the most popular are the annual Diwali celebrations (Sunday 8 November 2026) which transform Jaipur into a constellation of lights and Holi (Wednesday 4 March 2026), which erupts in clouds of colour and much laughter.

TENGOAL'S TOP TIPS FOR VISITING JAIPUR Best time to visit: October to March, when the weather is mild and festivals abound. How long to spend there: To fully experience Jaipur, it is recommended to spend at least two to three days in the city. How to get there: Jaipur’s Sanganer airport is 15 km south of the city centre and is served by a number of international or local airlines. Getting around: Auto-rickshaws, taxis, 60
G UA R D S P O LO C LU B T E N G OA L M AG A Z I N E
and cycle rickshaws are abundant. There are 24 hour pre-paid kiosks in front of the railway and bus stations, offering rates much cheaper than you’re likely to get on the street. Many attractions are walkable within the city. Where to stay: Heritage hotels, boutique guesthouses and modern resorts cater to every traveller’s taste and budget. Book ahead: India can get very busy from November to February, so
affordable accommodations are usually swamped in peak season. Etiquette: It pays to know the rules and expectations for visits to temples, mosques, monasteries, gurdwaras (Sikh shrines), synagogues and churches. Check if you are allowed to enter – some temples and mosques are closed to people who don’t follow the faith. Dress modestly, respect local customs and always ask before photographing people. S

The Access Bank Cup combines the elegance of polo with a mission to provide quality education for underprivileged children in Nigeria. Since its inception in 2010, what began with a single school of 400 pupils has grown into a landmark partnership. To date, the initiative has built and equipped 60 school blocks, directly impacting the education of more than 14,000 children. This year, funds raised at the event will support the construction of another 60 fully equipped classrooms, continuing the Bank’s long-term commitment to education and opportunity. “We have used polo at Guards Polo Club as a platform that unites global changemakers around one common cause, investing in the future of Africa through education. The partnership with Fifth Chukker and UNICEF is symbolic and transformative”, commented Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Non-Executive Chairman of Access Holdings Plc. Funds raised on this remarkable day continue to support long-term educational initiatives, ensuring that children in rural Nigeria gain access to quality schooling and a pathway to future opportunities. Roosevelt Ogbonna, Group Managing Director/CEO of Access Bank Plc, explains further. “At Access Bank, we believe education is a fundamental right. By aligning our brand with this purpose, we are proud to demonstrate that financial success and social impact can and must go hand in hand.”

POLO AND PHILANTHROPY
Not surprisingly, the Access Bank Cup is more than a sporting event; it is a celebration of global talent and shared purpose. Players from Nigeria and beyond compete alongside some of polo’s leading professionals. In 2010, Adolfo Cambiaso, one of the world’s greatest polo players, competed with his 11-year-old son; this year, his daughter Mia, a UNICEF Ambassador, joined him on the Fifth Chukker team, continuing the family legacy of sport and philanthropy.
CSR AT THE HEART OF EVERYTHING
This charity polo day represents a cornerstone of The Access Bank UK Limited’s broader corporate social responsibility (CSR) philosophy. Far from being a single initiative, CSR is embedded in the Bank’s culture, shaping the way it operates, engages with communities and empowers its people. A LEGACY OF PURPOSE
From Kaduna to Windsor, the Access Bank UK Charity Polo Day perfectly demonstrates how sport, corporate leadership, and philanthropy can unite to create lasting change. Beyond the polo field, the event underscores a wider philosophy: that success is measured not just in financial returns, but in the lives transformed and communities empowered. Polo may be the stage, but the real legacy from the day lies in education, opportunity and sustainable impact – a testament to the enduring commitment of Access Private Bank and The Access Bank UK Limited to create a better, more inclusive future.

uards Polo Club hosted another successful coffee morning in late October in support of the Macmillan Cancer Care charity. The staggering sum of more than £7,600 was raised in just two hours in the Clubhouse. Members and their guests flocked to the event, not only wanting to catch up with friends or family over a cuppa and lots of cake, but making the most of the pop-up, independent stalls. This event is the ideal
way to kickstart the Christmas shopping. Stalls by Delilah Cosmetics, Fuchsia Design, Tropic Skincare, British Polo Gin, Denise Vincent, Sarai London, Wendy Hunt and T & Toff ensured there was something for everyone’s Christmas List. In addition, Sue Smith brought her popular pre-loved interiors stall to the Clubhouse, while the Guards team, including Pam Manku, Sophie White, Tissy Sievwright, Jane Hebditch and Sarah Fox, had worked hard to create
an impressive tombola and raffle. The latter was won by a delighted and slightly stunned James Fowlie, one of the Club’s Match Officials. There was also a live auction, brilliantly hosted by our own Major Jamie Hayward. He encouraged the room to dig deep for some superb lots including a week’s holiday for five in an apartment in the English Riviera, donated by Akash Paul, a limited-edition polo print by renowned artist and polo coach Eddie Kennedy donated

SCREEN CHUKKAS Our favourite sport has occasionally made an appearance on the big screen. Probably the most famous is the iconic Pretty Woman moment but there has been an array of polo scenes dating back to the 1930s. So sit back, have your popcorn at the ready and take a look at some of those films that have featured a chukka or two...
Pretty Woman (1990)
The pivotal scene sees Richard Gere’s character Edward Lewis introduce Vivian Ward, played by Julia Roberts, to the world of polo at a charity match. Without doubt the most famous polo scene on film and often used to describe the treading in scenario to new spectators to polo.

The Great Gatsby (2013)
Baz Luhrmann’s luscious adaptation of F Scott Fitzgerald’s novel includes a polo match, featuring the character Tom Buchanan, early on in the film. The scene not only provides a visual spectacle but also helps to establish the social divide between the characters. 82

Polo Joe (1936)
Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
Modern audiences are probably not familiar with this light-hearted comedy which is almost 90 years old. The storyline is that a man, played by Joe E Brown, decides to take up polo to impress a woman! Not surprisingly it doesn’t go to plan, especially as Joe is frightened of horses!
Hollywood megastar Steve McQueen, who was already a keen sportsman, learned to play polo specifically for this role. The polo was shot at the Myopia Hunt Club in Massachusetts, USA, and featured several local polo players as extras. Sadly the polo was changed for a catamaran race in the 1999 version featuring Pierce Brosnan.

The Counselor (2013)

Mickey’s Polo Team (1936)
Another star from the big screen, Mickey Mouse, takes up polo in this 1936 short animation. Mickey’s team was made up of some very familiar faces - Goofy, Donald Duck and the Big Bad Wolf. It is not surprising that Mickey Mouse picked up a polo mallet as his creator, Walt Disney, was a keen player of the game.
Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)
Matthew Lopez’s directorial debut included a polo match and plenty of off field drama. Based around Casey McQuiston’s novel of the same name, it explored the relationship between a fictional son of a fictional king of England and a fictional son of a fictional female President of the USA. The boys’ parents were played by Stephen Fry as King James III of the United Kingdom and Uma Thurman as Ellen Claremont, the USA’s first female Nicholas Galitzine and Ellie Bamber in Red, White & Royal Blue president. TRUEFIT T & HILL
THE SMELL OF SUCCESS Joanna Broughton heads up Truefitt & Hill, an inspirational British brand in the world of men’s grooming. Diana Butler talks legacy, gender and inspiration with this remarkable businesswoman who is successfully balancing history with modernity to ensure the brand stays relevant to the modern man while remaining embedded in the ‘fabric of British heritage’ IM AGE S : TRUEFIT T & HIL L
How long have you been involved with Truefitt & Hill? “For rather longer than I care to admit! It has been a richly rewarding journey, both professionally and personally, marked by the deep satisfaction and privilege of seeing Truefitt & Hill flourish while remaining true to its 220-year heritage. Honouring the brand’s remarkable legacy, while ensuring it stays relevant to new generations of young men is a constant and delicate balance of stewardship and evolution; one that sits at the very heart of everything we do. Our long history has woven Truefitt & Hill into the very fabric of British heritage, a legacy that I am certain will continue for generations to come.” What first sparked your interest in the company? “I was immediately drawn to Truefitt & Hill’s extraordinary past and the unique place it holds in British history. Our authenticity and remarkable continuity afford us a legacy that very few businesses can claim. I saw enormous potential in the combination of impeccable craftsmanship and timeless elegance, qualities that set Truefitt & Hill
apart from other grooming brands. The company felt unique, too precious not to nurture. Truefitt & Hill isn’t just a firm; it continues to be unfolding of history and must be preserved in every detail.”
“ Guards Polo Club epitomises the quintessential gentleman’s lifestyle, celebrating sport, camaraderie and refinement”
Did you know about the company’s remarkable history before you worked for them? “Absolutely. Truefitt & Hill’s unique history is one that cannot be overlooked, with every chapter contributing to the remarkable tapestry of our story. For more than two centuries Truefitt & Hill has remained a constant companion to generations of men – from serving as wigmaker to King George III, admired by Thackeray and mentioned by Dickens, to earning the patronage of a young Queen Victoria as her personal head-dresser. Our tradition of excellence continued through being of service to icons such as Winston Churchill, Hollywood legends and the great and the good alike. It even extends to artifacts bearing our brand and name discovered on the Titanic. Carrying forward that inheritance is bo t h a p r ivil e ge and a pro fo u n d responsibility.”

TRUEFIT T & HILL
What is your background – did you already have knowledge of the grooming and fragrance industry? “No, my experience lies in business, lifestyle branding, interior design and publishing, all of which instilled in me a deep appreciation for product and service quality, brand storytelling and the importance of understanding the psychology of one’s customers. These, I feel, are important aspects when working with a brand of unparalleled heritage, exquisite craftsmanship and a deeply ingrained culture of service.” Were people initially surprised to find a woman at the helm of Truefitt & Hill? “That question always makes me smile, as it is asked almost every time I am interviewed. To some extent, the answer is yes. Traditional industries like men’s grooming can be perceived as male-dominated, but I think that leadership must be about vision, passion, authenticity and the ability to connect, rather than about gender. I have focused on what I bring to the table, not on meeting expectations. Today’s discerning consumer seeks integrity, product honesty, sustainability and leadership that adds true value. I think that the gender of the CEO is simply irrelevant to the quality of the products and the customer experience.”
“In essence, Truefitt & Hill is a dialogue between past, present and the future. It is the balance of blending tradition with demands of modern lifestyle. We honour the rituals and refinement of the past while innovating to meet the expectations of the modern man. We embrace our history not as a constraint, but as a foundation, as a bedrock of timeless values and craftsmanship upon which every new idea is built. Our products carry names that evoke a bygone era and whisper of classic British elegance, yet beneath that exterior lies meticulous, modern formulation. Every

shaving cream, oil, balm and fragrance is crafted to deliver the performance and efficacy that satisfy the discerning needs of contemporary clientele.” How important are heritage brands in today’s society? “I think that in unsettled times we look for things that endure. Heritage brands provide continuity, authenticity and craft – qualities that last. In a world dominated by fleeting trends and constant change they stand as bastions of timeless quality, craftsmanship, integrity and stability. I see them as anchors in an ever-shifting landscapes, reminding us that true value endures. Consumers are increasingly discerning, they no longer measure luxury by price, but by provenance, ethics and workmanship, all of which make
How do you personally engage with Truefitt & Hill clients? “I believe in the power of personal connection and attentive listening. Staying engaged at every opportunity allows me to understand what today’s men truly need and how we can deliver it while, at the same time, remaining faithful to our identity. Direct contact is invaluable as I think it is the only way to truly understand what men value, what they feel is missing and what they expect from a grooming ritual. We are very fortunate in having clients who have been with us for decades, whose opinions are priceless, yet it is equally important to listen to our rapidly growing younger clientele, who bring fresh perspective. Our customers’ insights inform everything we do – from product formulations to the in-store ritual. Heritage gives us authority; conversation keeps us honest and current.” How do you balance Truefitt & Hill’s remarkable heritage with the modern consumer’s demands?

Houses that stay true to themselves while evolving thoughtfully are more relevant today than ever.” The Highgrove Collection is a wonderful range. How long did it take to create – from initial idea to product launch? How involved were the Highgrove team? “Yes it is a wonderful story and like so many great things, it began with a simple conversation: ‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful if…?’ From that moment to the final launch, the Truefitt & Hill Highgrove collection was developed over a year. It was a carefully considered journey where every detail was guided by a commitment to excellence and our determination to do justice to the privilege granted to us by His Majesty in permitting us to support His charitable endeavours. We plan to launch new product ranges while evolving our existing lines, further cementing our position as the gold standard in male grooming. It will be a year of both consolidation and expansion, punctuated by introduction of product ranges that marry tradition with modern sustainability. Away from work, how do you relax? “I enjoy nature. I love hiking, photography and time surrounded by my family. I think that being outdoors offers a sense of calm and a change of perspective and I often find that my best ideas crystallise during these moments. I also enjoy socialising, reading, theatre and art.” And finally, what is your favourite Truefitt & Hill product? “That’s not an easy choice! There are so many products I love. The Highgrove range is a natural favourite since it is truly exceptional in every respect. I am very fond of 1805 Cologne as it honours the date of our establishment and captures the essence of the brand: refined, timeless and undeniably British. Our Mayfair fragrance is wonderful and I do love its playful and beguiling notes! Of course our shaving creams and soaps have a reputation of being the very best and have a huge following amongst the gentlemen – they certainly deserve a mention as favourites, and that’s perhaps where my gender plays a role in not mentioning them as first in line!” S

uards Polo Club once again hosted the Lycetts Thoroughbred In Sport (TIS) Championship. The 2025 event was the third edition of this remarkable day and is the brainchild of professional player Jack Richardson. The aim of the event is to continue to highlight the ability of those thoroughbreds which have transitioned from the world of racing into the sport of polo. Today many players compete on ex-racehorses and there are several best retrained racehorse pony prizes in key matches which recognise the development in the game. The entries were divided into three classes – three-year-olds, four-year-olds and five-/ six-year-olds. The UAE team dominated the early classes, winning both the three-and four-year-old entries. Eireann Bologna, a non-runner by Acclaim out of Approachable 94

The UAE Polo Team’s Eireann Modena went on to take the four-year-old class, the best of eight entries. This unraced filly by Poets World out of Billythefilly headed home with a cheque for £3,500 thanks to the class sponsor Convex. The judges, including David Woodd and David Morley, remarked that Modena showed “exceptional schooling ability and balance”.

After all the entries had been put through their paces, the focus moved to some exhibition chukkas at Smith’s Lawn, again highlighting the thoroughbred’s agility on the polo field. The day concluded with a polo pony auction and a Searcys BBQ on the Clubhouse Lawn. Rajasthan Polo Club, Jaipur, India Created in 1918, this club was originally known as Jaipur Polo Club. However the merger between Jaipur and Rajasthan States in 1957 resulted in this name change. This club boasts an impressive alumnus. Past members have included HH Maharaja Sawai Man Singh ll of Jaipur and Rao Raja Hanut Singh, whose Ratanada team won the first Royal Windsor Cup at Guards Polo Club in 1955. Earlier this year we welcomed the current Maharaja and his Jaipur polo team to Guards Polo Club for the inaugural Indian Polo Day, perfectly highlighting the close ties between these two remarkably polo-playing nations. www.rajasthanpoloclub.co.in 106
Singapore Guards Polo Club has once again been delighted to welcome members of Singapore Polo Club to Smith’s Lawn this summer, highlighting the success of this reciprocal agreement. Singapore Polo Club is one of the oldest sporting and social clubs in this city-state, having been founded in 1886 by the officers of the King’s Own Regiment. Polo is played for almost 12 months of the year in a club which nestles among acres of tropical grounds. This green setting belies the fact that the club is just moments from Singapore’s busy business and commercial centre. www.singaporepoloclub.org
