Planning an impromptu getaway, an adventure trip or juggling business meetings in multiple locations? Private aviation has been an answer to many of our readers, choosing to avoid long airport queues and unexpected cancellations. Not all private aircraft are built equal, however, and some jets may offer more freedom needing shorter or even unpaved runways thus bringing you as close to your destination as possible and saving the most precious commodity – time.
GO WHERE NO BUSINESS JET HAS GONE BEFORE
Introducing the Pilatus PC-24, the Super Versatile Jet. It’s named so for good reason, and it is one of the most multi-faceted aircraft around, combining the flexibility of a light aircraft and a medium-sized jet cabin for up to 11 passengers. It’s been engineered to work off-road, meaning unpaved and even grass runways may be considered. A roomy cargo door accommodates even the most
discerning passenger’s handmade baggage or skiing equipment and even allows extra-large items such as motorbikes to be loaded onboard. So what special destinations can this industry-leading aircraft take you to, exactly? Let’s have a closer look at a few options, each just a short hop away from London business aviation airports.
Goodwood:
Flight Time: 00:30 Escape to the countryside and enjoy a stay at the majestic Goodwood Estate. Jet in on the PC-24 and know that you will be the only executive business jet on the grass airfield to enjoy a sunny day, providing direct access to all the estate has to offer. Don’t just beat the crowds, avoid them! With plenty of room
on board for your golf clubs, ensure they’re packed for your round at the exclusive Goodwood Golf Club followed by a spoilt evening at the Goodwood Hotel, all situated within the illustrious grounds of Glorious Goodwood.
Gstaad:
Flight Time: 1:45
With enough room for your ski’s, there is no need to travel light when visiting Gstaad. Land at Saanen with the PC-24 for access to the famous pistes of Gstaad in just 9 minutes! Recover, rejuvenate and, when you’re ready, race around the slopes whilst taking in the spectacular mountain scenery and Swiss cuisine that Gstaad offers.
Venice Lido
Flight Time: 2:40
Jet into Venice Lido and meet your speedboat within minutes of landing. The PC-24 gets you closer to your destination, with Venice Lido’s grass airfield offering better access direct into the heart of the city on water. The flight time’s a little longer than other destinations on this list, but at well under 3 hours, your fellow partygoers will still be stuck at the airport by the time you’ve finished your first glass of Prosecco.

CHAIRMAN’S FOREWORD
Brian Stein looks forward to a busy season of superb polo and excellent hospitality
As we begin our first season under the reign of HM King Charles lll, Guards Polo Club has probably never looked stronger. We are delighted that His Majesty has succeeded his father as Head Ranger of Windsor Great Park, so taking a keen interest in our activities here at Smith's Lawn, a location where His Majesty achieved so much polo success. We reflect on these achievements on page 32. Several new Home Elected Players (HEPs) have enrolled at the Club in time to play this season, no doubt hoping to add their names to some of our prestigious trophies too and we look forward to welcoming them and their teams to Smith’s Lawn this summer. Such depth of home talent can only increase the competitiveness of polo at the Club across all levels.
One of the main reasons that players are wanting to join Guards Polo Club is the successful implementation of our Grounds Development Plan. The redeveloped Princes’ Ground came into full play last season and received plenty of positive comments from the sport’s top players. Now, if the weather stays kind to us, the remodelled Grounds Six and Eight will be slowly introduced into the schedule this season.
On the back of this success the Club’s Chief Operating Officer, James Neighbour, and Director of Polo, Antony Fanshawe, are looking at starting the final phase of the grounds plan this summer. This involves redeveloping Ground Four, the culmination of a huge, £3million project that is creating some of the world’s finest polo fields.
Of course none of this work would have been possible without the unwavering support of Players and Social Members. Our Membership is the lifeblood of this Club and it is what makes us stand out head and shoulders from our peers. So thank you for the incredible support on and off the field of play.
A major change for this season is the arrival of Lush by Tom Kerridge and Searcys to Guards Polo Club. Lush will focus on the big event days while Searcys will manage the Clubhouse on a daily basis. Tom Kerridge already has two Michelin stars under his belt for his restaurant in Marlow and his experienced events catering team, headed by General Manager Tom Duffy and Executive Chef Kieran Reilly, have put together some stunning menus for our big days.
Searcys, the UK's oldest caterer, dating to 1847, already manage the dining establishments at several iconic locations including The Gherkin in the City and St Pancras International in London. Searcys new team includes Head Chef Grahame Wickham, a former National Chef of the Year finalist and Catering Manager for the Irish Guards and the Clubhouse General Manager Harry Wilson. With Champagne Laurent-
Perrier continuing as our official champagne partner we definitely have all the ingredients in place to make some delicious memories.
The Club is fortunate to continue to have a strong group of generous sponsors, creating a strong platform on which we can build and grow this Club. Heading up this enviable group is Laurent Feniou and his team at Cartier, sponsors of the Queen’s Cup for more than a decade.
Out-Sourcing Inc., the Royal Windsor Cup sponsors, have enhanced their sponsorship opportunities at the Club by again generously supporting HRH The Prince of Wales’s Royal Charity Polo Event. So I was especially delighted to welcome David Matsumoto in person to Flemish Farm to attend this wonderful day for the first time. Out-Sourcing’s generosity helped this event raise £1million for a range of charities chosen by TRH Prince and Princess of Wales. With John Collins’s Talacrest Classic Ferrari brand bringing a wonderful touch of Italian horsepower and great prizes to our August high-goal tournament and Clé de Peau Beauté offering gifts to all Clubhouse diners as well as the finalists in our Ladies Charity Polo tournament, the action very much continues all season.
We were delighted to welcome Access Bank back to Smith’s Lawn after an absence of two years, offering their unique blend of polo and fundraising. The 2022 event raised an impressive $1.7million dollars for UNICEF, substantially supporting an education project in the disadvantaged areas of Nigeria.
Fundraising was at the heart of our Charity Shoot, with some £55,000 raised for the Scots Guards Charity and the Household Cavalry Foundation. Even our dog show got into the fundraising spirit and for the first time our annual canine event raised funds for Battersea Dogs and Cats.
Meanwhile Coworth Park, Clinova, Martin Collins and La Martina continue as valued members of our partnership stable. The latter, in addition to sponsoring two tournaments here at Smith's Lawn, also focuses on ensuring we are always looking our best on and off the polo field, thanks to Becky Simpson and her team at the La Martina Store.
So with a packed schedule of matches and hospitality already confirmed your favourite polo club is ready for its 68th season. I hope to meet many of you during the months and would like to thank you once again for your continued support of this great Club. ✸

ROYAL DAY RAISES £1MILLION FOR CHARITY
HRH The Duchess of Cambridge supports her husband at the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Charity Cup at Flemish Farm at the second, successful edition of His Royal Highness’s royal polo day
HRH The Duke of Cambridge, now the Prince of Wales, took to the polo field at Flemish Farm in early July 2022 to play in the second edition of the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Charity Polo Cup at Guards Polo Club. The aim of the day was to raise both awareness and funds for 10 charities supported by TRH
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The event achieved all of its aims brilliantly, raising £1million for a range of charities nominated by the Royal couple.
On the field of play, on the Club’s impressive Castle Ground, the Duke played as part of the U.S. Polo Assn. team alongside Aiyawatt (Top) Srivaddhanaprabha, Amr Zedan and
England team captain James Harper. Their opposition included Monterosso/Vikings, formed by Club patrons Alessandro Bazzoni and Siri Evjemo-Nysveen and featuring Saad Audeh and Juan Martin Zubia. The third team, BP Polo, included Garvy and James Beh, Henry Porter and Oliver Fanshawe.
In an exciting round-robin format, it was the U.S. Polo Assn. team who won the match. HRH The Duchess of Cambridge presented the prizes, including the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Charity Cup to winning captain Amr Zedan. Her Royal Highness also presented the Best Playing Pony, sponsored by the Cox family from Oklahoma, to Siri EvjemoNysveen's Nellie.

Out-Sourcing Inc. focuses on creating platforms to highlight and support charitable endeavors across the world, including here in the UK.”
The day was made possible by the generous sponsors and event partners. In particular the event organisers would like to thank Out-Sourcing Inc, who had assumed the role of title sponsor for the second successive year and has a long association with fundraising events such as this. Grateful thanks also went to the other sponsors and supporters including Guards Polo Club, U.S. Polo Assn., Monterosso/ Vikings, BP Polo, Xerjoff, Audi, Mosimann’s, The Cox Family of Oklahoma and Justerini & Brooks. ✸

HIS MAJESTY FIRST PLAYED PRACTICE matches at the Club as a 15-year-old boy in 1964, supervised by his father and the Club’s Founder, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. What followed was a hugely successful four decades of polo, registering success in some of the sport’s top trophies.
A highlight of His Majesty’s polo career is, without doubt, winning the high-goal Queen’s Cup, the first member of the Royal Family to win this trophy. By now playing off a four-goal handicap, His Majesty was a member of Guy Wildenstein’s Les Diables Bleus team. This quartet – Daniel Wildenstein,
Rodrigo Vial, Memo Gracida, HRH
The Prince of Wales – beat Antony Embiricos’s Tramontana, also featuring Jesus (Chuey) Baez, Carlos Gracida and Martin Brown, 9-8 in extra time in the 1986 final.
Major Willie Loyd, Guards Polo Club’s Polo Manager and regular polo correspondent, wrote the following in Horse & Hound on this 1986 final: “The most exciting finals day in the history of the high-goal tournament.”
This victory was the culmination of an almost decade-long partnership that His Majesty had with the Les Diables Bleus polo team that had started in Deauville in 1977, playing in the French Polo Championships. Guy’s team remained competitive at the top level of the game for the next nine years, reaching the final stages of the UK’s top polo tournaments including the British Open ( cont’d.)

Throughout this time His Majesty also regularly appeared on International Day at Smith’s Lawn. His Majesty first played for the Young England team before competing with his own HRH Team in these competitive and fast-paced international matches. More recently His Majesty has occasionally presented the prizes on this day, continuing to take a keen interest in the games and watching with an experienced eye from the Royal Box.
The Monarch also has his name on
another prestigious Club trophy. His Majesty steered the Windsor Park team to victory in the Royal Windsor Cup in 1984 and then recorded a second success when playing for Galen Weston’s Maple Leafs team in 1993.
Other regular appearances for His Majesty include playing on Varsity Day, donning a Cambridge shirt in the annual Old Blues match. Meanwhile His Majesty would also regularly turn out for the Royal Navy in the inter regimental battles at Tidworth when time allowed.
More recently the Club has been
fortunate to have both His Majesty and HRH The Prince of Wales take to the field on Gulf Co-Operation Council Day. This match was traditionally played on the Wednesday of Royal Ascot Week and regularly featured the Highgrove team.
Although His Majesty hung up his sticks in 2005, at the age of 57, his new role as Head Ranger of Windsor Great Park ensures that the Monarch continues to stay up-to-date with all that happens at Guards Polo Club. His Majesty King Charles lll has always been at the heart of this Club and continues to be so as the Club heads into its 68th season. ✸

Players and friends of the Club swap ponies for guns and raise more than £50,000 for military charities at this unique clay pigeon shoot in the depths of Windsor Great Park

The Eyes Wide Shut team, featuring Gary Short, Andrew Brady, Chris Brown and Simon Ford, came out best in the Club’s Charity Shoot in late June with an impressive score of 503. This was no mean feat as 22 teams took part in this EJ Churchill-managed clay pigeon shoot, created to remember our former Chief Executive Charlie Stisted.
Played in alternate years, the 2022 event was particularly memorable as the shoot featured five drives across two stunning locations within Windsor Great Park, by kind permission of the Crown Estate. The shooters returned to Flemish Farm and, for the first time, competitors were able to also access the magnificent Deer Park. So, not surprisingly, everyone took time out from the contest to pose for a group photo in front of the magnificent Copper Horse, standing proud at the top of Snow Hill.
Other winners on the day included Michelle Short, a member of the Secret Weapon team. Michelle was named Best Lady Shot. Jack Graham Lindsey (Mark Lindsey’s team) was awarded the Best Male Shot prize. The team of AFB2 (Clive Reid, Luke Reid, Paul Knightley and Trevor

This event raised a staggering £55,000 for these two military charities. Of course, such a sum was possible due to the outstanding kindness of everyone involved in the event, including our generous competitors, lunch guests and the donors of some standout auction prizes. Artist Nick Botting’s latest exhibition will feature some familiar scenes to the Members of Guards Polo Club
When I look for a subject to paint it can often be the simplest idea that first engages me. It might be the calmness of the river or the sound of the sea. I start to draw as a way of finding out how I might depict it and the thrill of an idea quickly takes me.”
This is a quote from the artist Nick Botting, an esteemed artist whose work is already well known in a variety of sporting locations around the world. There are Botting artworks in the Museum at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, the Football Association Headquarters, Wembley, and Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. In addition, Nick has undertaken commissions for the Duchy of Lancaster, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Really Useful Theatre Company and Hatfield House.
Last summer Nick turned his
attention - and his brushes – to polo. He became a regular figure on the Lawn at Guards Polo Club throughout several of our key fixtures, capturing not only the action on the field of play, but the many spectators watching the games. Nick’s first experience of polo was some 10 years ago when he painted the Archie David Cup Final and it was wonderful to see him able to add to this area of work in what turned out to be a most glorious summer.
Polo is an ideal subject for the London-based artist as he has an instinctive ability to capture in paint the atmosphere of his subject. Direct experience and careful observation are important themes throughout Nick’s work and are prominent in his wonderful oils of the 2022 season at Guards Polo Club, including the Cartier Queen’s Cup and the Hurlingham Polo Association’s Coronation Cup match.
Nick makes a point of painting directly from the subject, delivering a spontaneity and sense of genuine experience that is often lost in the studio.
Now Members of Guards Polo Club can see Nick’s work for themselves as we are hosting a private view of his latest exhibition exclusively for Club Members. This exhibition will feature a variety of studies from Smith’s Lawn as well as a selection of Nick’s racing images. ACCESS BANK DAY DELIVERS RETURNS ON AND OFF THE FIELD
PLAY
THE VIBRANT ACCESS BANK DAY made a wonderful return to Guards Polo Club in early July, once again delivering some fabulous fundraising accompanied by plenty of polo. The COVID-19 pandemic had forced the Club’s banking partner to postpone their hugely popular annual event for two successive years, so the 2022 Access Bank Day was particularly important.
The Access Bank Cup, which traditionally mixes patrons and some of the biggest names of the game currently playing in the UK, delivered a win for Access Bank Plc. They defeated Fifth Chukker 6-5 on The Queen’s Ground. Ali Albwardy, founder of the Desert Palm Polo Club in Dubai and patron of the
Dubai high-goal team, stepped forward to receive the trophy from HH The 14th Emir of Kano, Sanusi, Lamide Sanusi and HRH The Emir of Zazzau, Ahmed N Bamalli.
Ali, who had scored the majority of his team’s goals, also received the Best Playing Pony prize for Jasmine, whom he had played in the first and third chukkas. Ali’s teammate, and Access Bank Day regular, Adamu Atta was also impressive in this match, delivering some strong runs to goal.
The Most Valuable Player prize though went to Fifth Chukker’s Ryk Neethling. Ryk only took up the sport in lockdown

but put in a sterling performance in this match. His sporting prowess should not be a surprise though as this South African is an Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer!
Juan Martin Nero, Santi Cernadas, Barto Castagnola and Guillermo Terrera brought plenty of pace to the game but this was as much about having fun with friends as playing to win.
The first match of the day was played under a similar vibe and was a contest featuring Malcomines and Delaney for the Khalifa Cup. Damian Duncan’s Delaney team won this match 7-6 thanks to a winning goal off the stick of Marcos Araya in the final 30 seconds of the game. Damian was delighted to be named the Most Valuable Player in the post-match presentations which also included Herbert Wigwe, Group Chief Executive Officer of The Access Corporation Plc, Dr Ajoritsedere Awosika, Chairman Access Bank Plc, Roosevelt Ogbonna, Managing Director/Chief Executive Director of Access Bank Plc and Bababode Osunkoya, Chairman of The Access Corporation Plc.
However, the biggest winner on the day once again was UNICEF. Access Bank Plc guests were so generous with their pledges that more than $1.7 million was raised during the afternoon. This money will go towards a raft of more than 100 new and equipped classroom blocks in the disadvantaged areas of Nigeria, another part of Access Bank Plc/ Fifth Chukker’s impressive fundraising initiatives across Africa. ✸

atmosphere in the Clubhouse was relaxed and good-humoured. With John bringing two gorgeous Ferraris to the Lawn much of the chat was about the Italian horsepower parked outside rather than the thoroughbreds who would be responsible for winning this magnificent trophy in the coming weeks. ✸

HAROLD ROLF BAMBERG CBE TRIBUTE
Harold Bamberg, who died last September aged 98, was known to the wider world as an aviation pioneer. However, to the Members of Guards Polo Club he was better known as a highly regarded amateur player.
The patron of the Eaglesfield Polo team took up polo in 1965, at the age of 39. “My GP told me that I needed to take up more exercise so I went to see Billy Walsh who had stables in Richmond. He asked if I could ride, to which I replied ‘I think I can! I had never seen polo at that stage but was breeding racehorses from my farm at Eaglesfield in Hampshire’, revealed Harold in an interview in this publication in 2011.
Billy Walsh showed Harold how to play and after some years at Ham, he moved to Guards Polo Club. He recalled his first day at the Club in that same interview: “I arrived at Smith’s Lawn, walked into the Clubhouse, met Willie [Loyd], told him I had bought a house nearby, had 12 ponies and wanted to join!
“The next person I met was Claude Pert, the Polo Manager, to whom I said ‘I’m not much good’. ‘Oh, we will soon knock you into shape!’ So I joined.”
Since that auspicious moment the Eaglesfield team registered several successes at the Club, including wins in the Smith’s Lawn Cup (now the Mountbatten Trophy) in 1965, the Duke of Wellington Trophy in ’67, the Committee Cup in ’72 and the Phoenician in ’86. Harold also won the prestigious Harrison Cup at Cowdray Park in his first season at Guards,
playing alongside JJ Alberdi.
Away from polo Harold was an experienced aviator who put his flying experience with the RAF in the Second World War to good use in the civilian airline industry. He set up his own airline company, Eagle Aviation with a capital sum of £100 in 1948. This was the same year as the start of the Berlin Airlift and Eagle Aviation was at the heart of that operation. The airline grew and by 1951 Harold was employing 12 pilots among a staff of 100. Along the way the company changed its name to British Eagle and Harold became a key figure in the privately-owned airlines battle to remove the state monopoly –held by BOAC and British European Airways – across key routes.
He was held in high regard by his employees and when the airline collapsed in 1967 several members of staff pledged their pension funds to ensure the company’s continuity, but to no avail. This respect and affection remained until Harold’s death with one online memorial notice online stating that “[Harold] was a brilliant man who achieved so much, often against near-impossible odds”.
Another link between Harold and Guards Polo Club is Coworth Park. In the late 1950s Harold converted the house, which is now a luxury, country house hotel, into offices for his travel firm Henry Simpson Lunn – which later became Lunn Poly, the first package holiday company to include flights.
Harold retired from polo in 2001, after 36 years in the saddle and at the impressive age of 78. He recalled that “I had a heart attack in 1983 but carried on playing as I never got stressed playing polo.” After hanging up his polo sticks Harold continued to regularly visit the Club and was always happy to talk about his polo experiences at Smith’s Lawn. Harold is survived by his partner Katharina Pfeiffer and his children James, Anna, Jane, Clare and Alex, to whom we send our deepest condolences.

CREATING PERFECTION
Antony Fanshawe, the Director of Polo at Guards Polo Club, takes time out from prepping for the new season to talk to Diana Butler about why Guards Polo Club is proving such a hit with the players
What were your personal highlights of 2022?
“It has to be that it was such a great summer weatherwise. Not only did it mean the Club was able to complete the ground works for Grounds Six and Eight, but it also meant that we could play the same number of games as usual over the whole season. A wet summer would have made the work impossible and would have led to a raft of problems that would have taken us years to recover from. As it is we will be able to gently introduce these new grounds into this season’s scheduling which is remarkable. I would like to thank everyone involved in the project, including Juan Carlos and his team at
White Horse Contracting, James Neighbour for expertly project managing the plan on time and on budget and Paulius Kuklinskas and the ground staff for making sure all the other grounds were in perfect order to take the additional match play.”
How did the Club manage in the excessive heat and what water saving systems are in place?
“We avoided the heat by playing early in the morning on the really hot days. It was very important to make sure that the horses were able to get home before the hottest part of the day – normally around 3pm or 4pm. Of course on those record-breaking couple of days in July
the Hurlingham Polo Association advised that no polo should be played and so we rejigged our matches for later in the week. Fortunately the hottest day of the year occurred on a Monday which is traditionally polo’s day off and so the heatwave did not cause too much chaos in the office. I am fortunate in that I am brilliantly supported by Tara Bown and Shannon Stephenson in the Polo Office and I have to confess that they might have had a whole heap of issues but managed it with their usual calmness and politeness.
“The good news is that the new grounds will improve our ability to manage the amount of water we put on

the fields. For instance, the drains will pick up water and bring it back to a filtration pond (that has been purposebuilt at the bottom of Ground Eight) that then feeds into Virginia Water, which where we get our water from in the first place. The new irrigation system will have new pumps etc which are much more efficient both in terms of diesel use and water power.”
How did The Princes’ Ground (Ground Three) cope with being played for a full season and what sort of feedback did you receive from the players?
“The Princes’ Ground was the best field in the world last year! It played more than 80 games and even at the end was producing high-scoring games. However the first game of the Cartier Queen’s Cup – Park Place Vaara versus Thai Polo - blew me away due to the score – 31 goals (20-11 to Park Place Vaara). The players love it, the horses love it and it’s great to pull up your car and watch the match. It really is the perfect polo pitch.”
What are the plans for bringing Grounds Six and Eight into play this season and how did that development project go?
“The Grounds Development Plan has gone really well so far and we will bring these pitches into action as soon as we can. When you build a field, you move a lot of topsoil and this takes around two to three years to settle and really become organic again. So year one needs careful management. These grounds still don’t have the drainage that The Princes’ Ground has and it is possible we will need to add this, but we cannot add the drains until there is
a decent grass root structure.
“During The Princes’ Ground’s first season we played 45 games on that pitch so I am looking to match this and, from everything we learned from building Ground Three and the extra kit that we now have as a consequence, we should be able to play more polo on them. . .although we need good weather as always!”
When will final part of the Grounds Development Plan - redeveloping Ground Four - start?
“We are looking to start this in early July this year. We will of course keep players informed of our plans throughout this final development stage. The Guards team will be working once again with White Horse

Contractors and, if the weather is kind, we are looking at having the new ground completed in time for the 2024 season.”
What is next on your agenda from a polo perspective?
“Britain is the global heart of polo in May/June/July/August so if you love polo then you have to be in the UK for a few of these months. So we need to make sure that we are the best – as a Club, as an umpire, as an association, as a country. After the grounds project is complete my focus will be to make sure that we run the fairest competitions in the world AND that we continue to innovate with our infrastructure to ensure that the sport we all love so much is as efficient and sustainable as possible.”
Home Elected Players are on the increase –what is the secret of the
Club’s success?
“I have to admit that location is key. Being at the heart of such an historic park is priceless and Windsor Great Park’s proximity to London definitely helps too. That said, I think the fact that players can see how we invest the money that we receive from them back into Club helps too. Guards Polo Club is a Members club and the Members drive the policies forward. So if the players give us a budget then that budget has to be primarily about bettering the sport. We have built four new, full sized fields in the last 10 years – that is a real statement of intent, especially as the majority have been full-size, high-goal fields. Polo people can see what we are doing and they love it.”
How are entries looking for 2023?
“It is a bit too early to tell [this conversation was taking place in late March] but there is a lot of noise. Polo
in the US has been really strong this winter so I think we will have a lot of teams entering across a range of tournament levels.”
Is there anything new from a player’s perspective at the Club this year?
“I am slightly balder these days and less inclined to agree with everyone! Last year we proved all the doubters wrong and delivered an epic season. So when Grounds Six and Eight come into play, that will change polo for the better.
I would like to see the umpires treated with more respect going forward. Our Chief Umpire Howard Smith does a brilliant job but it is up to all of us to make sure that we are not adding to his stress levels unnecessarily at the peak time of the season. I also think that the Hurlingham Polo Association needs to do more to encourage umpires into the sport. It’s a tough job but excellent umpiring can only improve a game.
Just a few weeks ago I accompanied four of our players on a successful visit to Accra Polo Club in Ghana last month, part of the Ghana Independence Day celebrations. I hope that this will be the first of several overseas visits in the winter months for our players. It's a great way of promoting the Club but also its an excellent way to meet polo-playing Members wherever we may be in the world.
To be honest, I just wish I was 20 years old again, with a string of beautiful polo ponies driving through Blacknest Gate to play a match at Guards Polo Club on a warm summer’s day.”
Thinking ahead to the Royal Windsor Horse Show, what do you look for when judging the polo pony classes? “The horse has to catch my eye and then I look for depth in the girth, balance and agility; the ease with which it does what is being asked to do; general wellbeing, and then how it stops. A polo pony that doesn’t stop is like buying a lottery ticket, you may win big one day with some amazing play when all your stars align but mostly you will be beaten - by the guy who can stop!” ✸

THE 2022 FINAL of the Cartier
Queen’s Cup delivered an epic contest between Dillon Bacon’s Great Oaks LL and Andrey Borodin’s Park Place Vaara. This highly anticipated final, played in front of a sell-out crowd, did not disappoint, going into an extra time and a sudden-death seventh chukka. England international James Beim secured victory for Dillon’s Great Oaks squad by firing through the golden goal; a fitting end to four weeks of breath-taking, high-goal polo.
Setting the tone early from the field, Park Place Vaara’s Hilario Ulloa launched the ball from 60 yards out to score just seconds into the game. This initiated a strong first chukka where Park Place Vaara took a 3-0 lead. With time running out, Cruz Heguy completed a breakaway run to keep Great Oaks within reach, trailing 3-1. That field goal would prove to be their only one of the first half, as both defences provided few opportunities in a tightly marked match.
Ulloa’s second goal pushed Park Place Vaara further ahead in the second chukka. However, penalty goals accounted for the rest of the attacking play, with Juan Britos
and Heguy exchanging penalty conversions to leave Park Place Vaara ahead 5-3 at half-time. Field goals remained hard to come by as neither team found the goal for the second consecutive chukka with one penalty tally for each team. Park Place Vaara’s combined effort defensively allowed them to maintain their two-goal advantage into the sixth chukka, seemingly leaving them just seven minutes from victory. Stealing the ball from a knockin, Britos fought his way to goal and was fouled just steps from the post, knocking in a

Working the ball down the right side, Nero hit a neckshot across goal and with a quick turn of his horse, Heguy gained possession and found the goal to send this match into overtime, much to the delight of the packed grandstands.
Penalty 2 to put Park Place Vaara ahead by three and bring the Cartier Queen’s Cup title to almost within reach.
Time ticked down to less than four minutes left to play when Juan Martin Nero scored from distance for, incredibly, the first Great Oaks field goal since the opening chukka. Scoring his second goal shortly after, Nero brought Great Oaks to within one with just over one minute remaining. Working the ball down the right side, Nero hit a neckshot across goal and with a quick turn of his horse, Heguy gained possession and found the goal to send this match into overtime, much to the delight of the packed grandstands.
Stunned by Great Oaks’ late comeback, Park Place Vaara found the first opportunity in overtime, receiving a Penalty 4 to win the game. Incredibly, this ball was hit short. So when Nero hit a long ball from midfield, this sent James Beim racing towards goal under pressure from Britos. Winning the ride-off and no doubt deafened by the cheering from the stands, Beim picked up the ball on the nearside and ran it through the goal, ensuring Great Oaks LL won this most thrilling of contests 9-8.
Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, sponsors of this 22-goal tournament since 2012, presented the trophy to Dillon Bacon. Juan Martin Nero, thanks to his brilliant play in turning this match around, was named the Cartier Most Valuable Player, while Hilario Ulloa stepped forward to receive the Cartier Best Playing Pony prize for Lavinia Ambar. This pony had also been recognised with a similar award in Park Place Vaara’s semi-final match some

four days earlier.
Earlier in the day last year’s champions, UAE Polo Team, faced King Power on The Duke’s Ground for the subsidiary Cartier Trophy. Initiating a dominant first half for King Power, back-to-back goals from Mackenzie Weisz and Nico Pieres were briefly interrupted by a successful drive from UAE Polo Team’s Bartolome Castagnola Jnr. However, the first half continued to belong to King Power as Pieres took over play from the field, scoring four goals in the first three chukkas, including the only penalty conversion of the match. With Pieres leading a six-goal run, contributions from teammates Weisz and James Harper saw King Power remain in control of the match, holding a commanding 8-1 lead at the break.
Finding their first defensive successes in the early stages of the second half, UAE Polo Team held King Power’s potent field attack to just one goal off the mallet of Pieres as they began to mount a comeback. An early goal in the fourth chukka from Tommy Beresford kick-started the resurgence of Castagnola, scoring four goals from seven attempts.
UAE Polo Team managed to bring themselves within two, but two missed penalty opportunities and that huge first half deficit was ultimately too much to overcome, with King Power holding on to take the Cartier Trophy 9-7. Mackenzie Weisz was named the Cartier Most Valuable Player in this subsidiary final. ✸

Final Bardon, Ainsley Saddlery
Sub-Final Ferne Park/Cowdray Vikings, Four Quarters Black
BARDON ADDED their name to the Out-Sourcing Inc. Royal Windsor Cup thanks to a golden goal from Isidro Strada. Andras Tombor’s team won the UK’s leading 15-goal contest in extra time, beating Andrew Dechet’s Ainsley Saddlery 11-10 in extra time.
Tombor’s squad was eager to avenge its half-goal defeat in last year’s final against Emlor but had to work hard for this victory. Ainsley Saddlery would not give an inch and even when Bardon managed a two-goal lead in the third and again in the fifth, Dechet’s team fought back and closed the gap.
Ainsley Saddlery’s resilience was more remarkable as they had been forced to make a change to their team after Dechet himself was injured in the quarter-finals. The young Jack Whitman took his place, playing in his
first final at Guards Polo Club. Meanwhile the impressive 12-year-old Rufino Laulhe took on number one duties from his brother Beltran in the Ainsley squad and is definitely a player to keep an eye on in the future.
In addition to Strada, who was later named the Out-Sourcing Inc. Most Valuable Player, the standout competitor for Bardon was Teodoro Lacau. This Argentine player, also playing in his first final at the Club, was impressive, including winning several horse races against the always strong Manuel Plaza of Ainsley Saddlery.
In the fifth, and supposedly final chukka, Plaza and Guillermo Terrera stepped up a gear, pushing this game level, 10-10. A penalty for Ainsley Saddlery at the very end of this match to win the game, uncharacteristically went wide for Plaza, highlighting the pressure and tension on the field. Much to the delight of the packed grandstands this pushed the game into extra-time.
A great run by Lacau went wide early into this sixth chukka and the many guests of Out-Sourcing Inc., sponsors of this tournament for the past five years, held their breath. More tense play occurred before a Strada backhand delivered the
GUARDS POLO CLUB OFFICIAL YEARBOOK 2023 127
win for Bardon.
An obviously delighted Andras Tombor received the prestigious trophy from David Matsumoto, Executive Advisor and Partner of Out-Sourcing Inc. and Anne Heraty, Chairman of Cpl Resources Group. Bardon’s team manager Matias Machado’s impressive mare Open Calloway, played by Lacau in the first and sixth chukkas was named the Out-Sourcing Inc. Best Playing Pony. This eight-year-old mare adds this tournament to her best pony prizes in the Indian Empire and Duke of Cornwall finals.
Twenty-six teams had entered the 2022 15-goal contest and so the sub final was equally competitive. Ferne Park/Cowdray Vikings won this tussle 8-6, beating Romilla Arber’s Four Quarters Black. Vere Harmsworth was joined at the presentation by his co-patron George Pearson who had been injured earlier in the tournament and had to be substituted by the South African Benjamin Crowe. Both patrons received the Mountbatten Trophy from Mr Kazuhiko Suzuki, Senior Managing Director of OutSourcing Inc. and Mr Andrew Bentley.
In addition to two thrilling polo finals,
Ainsley Saddlery would not give an inch and even when Bardon managed a two-goal lead in the third and again in the fifth, Dechet’s team fought back and closed the gap

PARK PLACE SUCCESSFULLY defended their Talacrest Prince of Wales’s Championship Cup title in mid-August. Coming from behind, they defeated the Beh family’s BP Polo (received two goals on handicap) in a full-throttle and top speed match.
When these two teams had met in the league stages Park Place had claimed a three-goal victory, and so BP Polo were keen to turn the tables in this final. They showed their intent from the start thanks to some strong play from Joevy Beh. On the receiving end of two passes, Beh converted both attempts to give BP Polo an impressive 5-1 lead just moments into the second chukka.
Faced with a four-goal deficit, Park Place’s attack was ignited by Santos Merlos, who scored three of Park Place’s

goals to tie the match at 5-all. With this game now on an even keel, the two teams exchanged goals in an evenly matched third chukka with Hilario Ulloa adding his third penalty conversion, while BP Polo continued to take advantage of their chances from the field, scoring field goals from Joevy Beh and Rufino Bensadon to leave this exciting final tied at 7-7 entering the half-time break.
Park Place began to generate momentum early in the second half, establishing a proficient attack behind the trio of Ulloa, Santos Merlos and Juan Britos. Contributing a goal each, Park Place raced ahead by two, with Joevy Beh’s fourth field goal providing the only response for BP Polo. Playing at

an electric pace in the fifth chukka, Ulloa singlehandedly scored four goals as part of a 7-1 run for Park Place that began in the fourth. The momentum was now in Park Place’s favour and they began to pull away.
In one of his best showings of the season, Merlos added his sixth goal of the match to complete the run as BP Polo faced a monumental task, trailing by six with time ticking down. Producing two goals, BP Polo brought their total up to 11 which would be a winning score in most games, but Park Place’s attacking play excelled in front of the crowd on The Queen’s Ground as their second consecutive title came within reach. Substituting for Sam Wisbey in the sixth chukka, Andrey Borodin made an immediate impact for his Park Place organisation, scoring the final goal to secure the 16-11 victory for Park Place.

Most Valuable Player. Meanwhile, Hilario Ulloa received the Talacrest Best Playing Pony prize for JB Salsita. This 12-year-old grey mare was bred by England international James Beim and played by Ulloa in the second and fifth chukkas.
There were two further awards at this year’s main presentations. Josh Hyde received a cheque for £15,000 as he was named the Talacrest Young Player of the Year. John has been supporting this award for the past eight years and Josh, a regular member of the Park Place high-goal squad, joins an illustrious group of players, including his older brother Jack , all of whom have been recipients of John’s generosity.
The final award was not for polo but for the best Ferrari at the Club. John Collins presented this to Nigel Chiltern-Hunt for his stunning F40. This was one of an array of fabulous Italian horsepower that had paraded in front of the spectators before the final. The cars had been curated by John Collins and his Talacrest team and the Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain who were attending this day.
Earlier in the day Guards Polo Club
had hosted the sub final for the Talacrest Trophy. This went to Siri Evjemo Nysveen’s Vikings team. They beat Alessandro Bazzoni’s Monterosso Polo Team 10-8 in a six-chukka contest on the Princes’ Ground. Although Bazzoni may not have won the trophy he did head home with the Most Valuable Player prize. ✸

CHARITY MATCH Clé De Peau Beauté, Guards Polo Club
SEMPER ANTICUS added the Clé de Peau Beauté Guards Ladies Charity Polo Tournament trophy to their impressive polo collection on the last Saturday of August. This talented quartet, who had won the British Ladies Open Championship at Cowdray a month earlier, put up an impressive performance to win this prestigious polo trophy 9-5½, beating HH Sheikha Alya Al Maktoum’s young team, AM Polo, who received half a goal on handicap.
The first two chukkas were tense, with Nina Clarkin for Semper Anticus and AM Polo’s Milly Hine trading both tough ride offs and horse races down the Queen’s Ground. Semper Anticus were ahead 5-3½ at half time but this game was still wide open.
Clarinda Tjia-Dharmadi’s team stepped up a
gear in the latter stages of the match though. Nina successfully converted a 60-yard penalty to give Semper Anticus a bit of air in the score (6-4½). She then fired through a field goal from the subsequent throw-in and followed that up with a brilliant pass to Chloe Horswell to give Semper Anticus a strong, 8-4½ lead going into the final chukka. AM Polo stayed focused though, with Olivia Merlos finding the flags in the first minute of the fourth chukka. A minute later though Lucy Coddrington found the flags for Semper Anticus. This gave Clarinda’s team a comfortable 9-5½ advantage and although there was plenty of fast play for the remaining four minutes, tight defending from both sides ensured no further goals.
This was the second year of Clé de Peau Beauté’s sponsorship and Brand Manager Ciara Lynott presented the prizes, including the Lord Patrick Beresford Trophy to Clarinda, while her team-mate, Nina Clarkin was named Most Valuable Player. AM Polo’s

Milly Hine received the Clé de Peau Beauté Best Playing Pony prize for the nine-year-old Morejon Pelikana, whom Milly had played in the first and fourth chukkas.
The sub final, which had been played earlier in the day, saw a decisive win for Maiz Dulce. They beat Polo Performance 6-4.
The third ladies’ game of the day was a charity match featuring Guards Polo Club’s patrons plus one higher handicapped lady player per team. Victory in this match went to the Clé de Peau Beauté team. They beat Guards Polo Club 3½-1. Jushna Begum from Clé de Peau Beauté and Victoria Clare, CEO of Ovacome, presented the charity match prizes. Olympia Paus was named the Most Valuable Player while her beautiful grey, Cevillana, whom Olympia had played in the third chukka, was named the Best Playing Pony and received a stunning flower headcollar.
Away from the field of polo the main focus of the day was substantial fundraising for
Ovacome (www.ovacome.org.uk), the UK’s national ovarian cancer support charity. A live and silent auction, plus a raffle, raised some £15,000 for this incredible charity. So thank you to everyone that dug deep and supported the Ovacome team on the day. ✸

THE HURLINGHAM POLO 1875
Coronation Cup returned to the famed Queen’s Ground on the penultimate Saturday in July and appropriately delivered a stand-out match befitting such a prestigious international test. This contest was the showcase match in a packed itinerary of sport curated by the Hurlingham Polo Association (HPA) highlighting every generation playing polo in the UK today.
England, captained by James Harper, delivered an impressive and cohesive performance to defeat a strong Uruguay squad (receiving a goal on handicap) 11-9. The visiting team, led by Alejo de Taranco Stirling, might have been making their debut in this match but put up a strong opposition, staying very much in contention until the final whistle.
This was one of the best Coronation Cup matches in recent years as the teams were so evenly matched. England may have finished all but the first chukka ahead, but the margin between these two teams was so small that neither side could relax for a moment. Accurate goal scoring, be it from the field or from penalties, by England sevengoaler Tommy Beresford was instrumental in keeping England ahead, especially in the

later stages of the game when the home side managed to create and then maintain a twogoal lead. Tommy finished the match as the home side’s top goal scorer, firing through five goals and so was named the Corpay Most Valuable Player. Uruguay’s Ignacio Viana finished as the visitors’ top scorer, also with a five-goal tally.
England captain James Harper was at the top of his game, while James Beim, who had a standout season in the high-goal, was an expert in running through traffic, including scoring a crucial goal at the start of the sixth to give England a three-goal advantage (10-7) at a key moment. Meanwhile Louis Hine, who at the age of 16 was the youngest player to represent England in the Coronation Cup, played with a maturity well beyond his years.
Pony power is often an issue for the visiting team but this was not a problem for Uruguay. Taranco Stirling works for La Dolfina and so it was no surprise to see him ride seven Adolfo Cambiaso horses. Juan Martin Nero provided the majority of Santi Stirling’s string while Santi’s brother, Pelon, who was coaching the visitors, offered several of his
string to Viana and Juan Enrique Curbelo. It was Pelon’s Maserati, which had been made by former England team captain Luke Tomlinson, who was named the Derby House Best Playing Pony.
The second pony prize – the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) Champion, went to Harper’s Lobster, whom he had played in the second and fifth chukkas. Beth Howlett from the RoR presented the prize to the delighted England captain and his grooms.
Ned Hine – Louis’s older brother – may not have been playing on this day but did head home with a trophy. He received the Ferguson Trophy as he was named the HPA’s Best Young English Player of the Year, receiving the impressive cup from Andrew Barlow, Chair of the HPA’s Development and Coaching Committee.
The day had started with two games featuring the next generation of polo players. The Colts Cup featuring the under 17s was a win for the Hurlingham team (rec ½ goal). Sixteen-year-old Will Millard, who already plays off two goals, was the standout player, ensuring Hurlingham had a comfortable 3½

- 0 lead at half-time. They went on to beat 1875 5½ – 3. Next up were the under 14s in the Stagshead Trophy. The 1875 team (rec ½ goal on handicap) took this win, beating Hurlingham in a closer game, 3½ – 3.
These junior matches were followed by chukkas from the Pony Club “Fluffies”. The blue team dominated this game, beating the red team 4-0.
The day concluded with a University Challenge match featuring the Hurlingham Academicals v the SUPA Stars (rec ½ goal on handicap). The Hurlingham Academicals won this four-chukka contest 7 – 4½. The winners’ Dom Lodge was named the Most Valuable Player and received a pair of handmade knee pads from The Prime Warden The Hon Mark Maffey of the Worshipful Company of Saddlers.
The Coronation Cup’s packed programme of sport highlighted the depth and strength of polo in the UK. The England’s team victory was not only an inspiration to all those up-and-coming players but the perfect platform to welcome this mighty cup back to Guards Polo Club. ✸

OXFORD KEPT HOLD of the La Martina Varsity Trophy, adding their name for the eighth successive year. The dark blue shirts beat their long-standing rivals, Cambridge University Polo Club 8-2 in a fastpaced game under a scorching sun. Oxford has dominated this annual match, which was first played for in 1878, in recent years –Cambridge last took the trophy home in 2014 – and the 2022 fixture was no exception.
Thomas Gordon-Colebrooke and Matthew Burns Barnard kicked off Oxford’s campaign, firing through four goals between them before the half-time bell. Cambridge kept themselves in contention in the first half thanks to a goal from their captain Tony Finch, but any hope that this might be Cambridge’s year was short-lived.
Both teams found the flags once in the third chukka but Oxford emphasised their ability in the fourth. Thomas and Tamara Gibbons, who was later named the Most
Valuable Player (pictured left), fired through three further goals – to none in reply from Cambridge – to secure this convincing win. Thomas, who also had a standout game for Oxford, later received the La Martina Best Playing Pony prize for Bella from Rowing Blazers' founder and CEO Dr Jack Carlson. In the annual schools contest, which dates back to 1989, Harrow again defeated Eton but the contest was a much closer affair. These teams were so evenly matched that the game went to extra time on a score of 3-3. Hector Rogberg, distinctive in his red helmet, fired through the winning shot for Harrow in this fifth chukka, ensuring the Middlesex school keeps hold of Jenny Walton Masters Trophy for another year. Harrow’s Shrey Rawal (pictured bottom left) was named the Most Valuable Player while Eton’s Oliver Drewitt received the Best Playing Pony prize for Bienvenida.

Saddlery squad added their name to the prestigious Archie David Cup for the first time. Sadly their patron was out of action due to an earlier polo injury but cheered his team on from the side-lines. Such encouragement paid off as Ainsley Saddlery defeated Philipp Mueller’s Wascosa team 6-5 in a tight final, played on the last Sunday in June.
It was Lottie Lamacraft, substituting for her injured patron, who scored the winning goal. Not only did Lottie win the match but was later named the Most Valuable Player. Meanwhile, Wascosa’s Pierandrea Mueller’s Fax Secretaria was named the Polo Times Best Playing Pony.
Ainsley Saddlery’s win was even more impressive as 32 teams had entered this
eight-goal contest, considered to be the UK’s leading low-goal tournament. So with such a strong field it was no surprise that the final was not the only competitive game on this day. This included a win for the Arber family’s Honesty team in the sub final for the Caterham Cup. They beat Quel Domage 5-4 in another close game.
Meanwhile, the Club teams that had been knocked out after the league stages had the opportunity to play for the Claude Pert Trophy. Honours here went to Mindi Byrne’s Tex8n Polo. They beat Tchogan 7-5. ✸

BLACK BEARS’ Guy Schwarzenbach lifted the mighty Indian Empire Shield on the Castle Ground in mid July, but only after a thrilling, seven-chukka, widened goals drama against Emlor Black. Guy himself fired through the winner and received the trophy from Coworth Park Hotel Manager Rowan McFeat. Meanwhile, James McCarthy’s squad were distraught as they thought they had won on two previous occasions, only for both goals to be disallowed.
Both teams delivered some superb match play in this thrilling, 18-goal final, producing one of the best games of the season, if not the decade. Black Bears and Emlor Black were firing on all cylinders from the first
whistle and although the Bears took an early 2-0 lead, it was not long before Emlor Black got themselves back on terms. Richard Tyrone converted a penalty and team-mate Juan Ambroggio scored to bring the scores level as the bell rang for the break. Black Bears dominated the second with Patrick O’Dwyer successfully converting a penalty and then following up with a field goal. The roles were reversed in the third with Emlor Black scoring almost back-toback goals from Jose Araya and Ambroggio to put McCarthy’s team ahead for the first time. Although James Fewster, who had a stand-out game for Black Bears and was later named the Most Valuable Player, saved the Bears’ blushes on the half-time bell by firing through a beauty to level the scores (5-5) at the break.
The tension increased in the latter stages of the game with both teams desperate to put some air in the scores. O’Dwyer uncharacteristically sent a penalty wide in the fourth before converting another, ensuring Black Bears had the narrowest of leads going into the fifth. Three minutes
INDIAN EMPIRE SHIELD GUARDS POLO CLUB OFFICIAL YEARBOOK 2023 152
into this chukka McCarthy levelled the score and some great defensive play from Tyrone stopped Black Bears from finding the flags. The tension was palpable. So when Ambroggio left the ball almost in the goalmouth everyone watching this game held their breath; although nobody was able to connect with the stranded ball and score. Then with only nine seconds left of this match Araya picked up the ball from a melee and fired it through the goal. Unfortunately the whistle had gone so the goal was disallowed.
Now into extra time, there was plenty of fast play, including a terrific ride-off between Tyrone and Fewster which thrilled the spectators but failed to reveal a winner. So the goals were widened and a seventh chukka began. Emlor Black were the first team to put a goal through, again from the stick of Araya and the team started to congratulate each other but heartbreakingly for Emlor Black the goal was disallowed. So, when Guy Schwarzenbach found himself unmarked just a minute or so later he was able to fire through the winner.
A small consolation for Jose Araya was that he received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize. This went to Pire Blanca Nieves, a 14-year-old whom Jose had played in the third, fifth and seventh chukkas.
Twelve teams had entered this 18-goal contest in a bid to win this huge shield, which was first played for in the 1920s. The sub final trophy, which is an equally impressive piece of silverware, was won by Romilla Arber’s Four Quarters Black. They beat Adriano Agosti’s Altamira K 10-6 in just five chukkas at Coworth Park. ✸

MADAMS FARM delivered an impressive performance to win the Duke of Cornwall’s Trophy at on the last Sunday in August. This 16-goal team led from the first chukka and never relinquished their advantage. Bardon, who were competing in their second successive Duke of Cornwall’s final, were eager to go one better this year but had to settle for the runners-up spot, going down 11-6 after four, fast-paced and thrilling chukkas. The winning team inflicted the most
damage in the first chukka. Some brilliant team-work, a hallmark of Madams Farm’s play on this day, ensured they headed into the second chukka with a 5-1 scoreline. Ollie Cudmore, Sam Browne and Jack Richardson all found the flags to only one goal in reply from Bardon’s Alfredo Bigatti.
Bigatti started the second with a big hit to goal to add another for Andras Tombor’s squad. Richardson then successfully converted a penalty to keep Madams Farm ahead by four goals (6-2). With tension rising on the field – the penalties increased. Richardson sent one wide while Bigatti successfully fired through two to bring Bardon back into this game at the half-time break (6-4).
This was now anyone’s game, especially when Bigatti successfully converted his third penalty to bring Bardon to within one of Madams Farm. Penalties though became Bardon’s undoing. Richardson made

Such was Ankora’s strength that they were 7-0 up at half-time. However goals from Jose Araya and Lucas Monteverde Junior in this same chukka
maintained Ankora’s substantial advantage and secured their victory.
Jose, who had scored six goals in this match, was later named The Most Valuable Player. Meanwhile, his equally talented team-mate, Lucas received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prizes for Nova.
As this tournament is a qualifier for the Hurlingham Polo Association’s 12-goal Victor Ludorum, the Club recorded a strong entry. Some 13 teams took part in 2022 and so the sub final was a tough and competitive affair. Rashid El-Ashkar’s Limitless won this tussle, defeating Max Sponer’s Amos 7-6. ✸

SPENCER MCCARTHY’S EMLOR retained the La Martina Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’s Centenary Trophy in mid-May but had to secure a golden goal first. Max Charlton, who was later named Most Valuable Player, did the honours, firing a ball through the flags in the extra, fifth chukka to ensure Spencer McCarthy headed home with the trophy for the third successive year.
Romilla Arber’s Four Quarters Black made Emlor work hard for this win though. They put up a strong fight, staying in contention every step of the way. So when Benjamin Urquiza fired through the equaliser in the fourth chukka nobody off the field of play was disappointed that such an exciting game was heading towards extra time. Both sides did have further chances in the fourth to close this match but sent their chances wide.
Those spectators who had defied the weather, showers were the order of the day, were delighted with such a competitive, 15-goal final. Twenty teams had entered the contest, so just reaching the final was an achievement in itself.

La Martina, Guards Polo Club, Flemish Farm
THE MOST OUTSTANDING player of his generation, Adolfo Cambiaso, was on hand to inspire some of the youngest players of the game at Guards Polo Club in June 2022. These 12 young players had taken to the polo fields in Windsor Great Park to compete in the Club’s annual Youth Tournament.
Adolfo was actually there to support his youngest daughter Myla, who was competing for the La Martina team but was happy to offer encouragement to several other players too. Every competitor also had the opportunity to have their own personal
moment with this 10-goal legend when he presented the prizes, alongside La Martina’s Phoebe Leake.
Cambiaso was not the only high-goal name in the team lists. Teams featured Toccalinos, Neros and Merlos’s too, plus an array of familiar Club names. The players, ranging from eight to 16, were divided into three teams – Flemish Farm, Guards Polo Club and La Martina – in a round-robin format of four chukkas of four minutes each. La Martina came out best of the competition and Lorenzo Nero, playing for La Martina, was named The Most Valuable Player. ✸

Sub-Final Tex8n Polo, Harum Scarum
ALAN FALL started his 2022 season in impressive style, winning the Valerie Halford Final and the Spring Tournament in the same weekend (read about the Valerie Halford match on page 171). On the Sunday afternoon Alan teamed up with Heiko Voelker, playing as Tchogan Dogs, to win the Club’s Spring Tournament.
However the Dogs had to dig deep to win this trophy, only beating Henry Lunn’s Bel Polo Team in a sudden-death, extra chukka. It was Alan himself that fired through the
golden goal, winning the match 6-5. There was nothing between these two teams for all four chukkas. Bel Polo managed a narrow, one-goal advantage going into the fourth (5-4) but Tommy Severn’s equaliser for Tchogan Dogs in the fourth pushed this match into extra time.
Tommy later received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony prize for Lovelocks Chechnya, while team-mate Will Drewitt was named the Most Valuable Player.
The sub final of this six-goal competition saw a more comprehensive win for Mindi Bryne’s Tex8n Polo. They beat Melanie and Jonathan Hare’s Harum Scarum 7-4 in four strong chukkas on the Castle Ground. ✸

MAD DOGS STARTED their 2022 campaign with a brilliant double. First Alan Fall’s squad claimed the 12-goal Valerie Halford Memorial Trophy. In this competitive final Mad Dogs beat Maximilian Kirchhoff’s Snake Bite 9-5 across four chukkas at Coworth Park. This was just the start of a winning weekend for Alan as 24 hours later he won the Club’s Spring Tournament when teaming up with
Heiko Voelker under the Tchogan Dogs banner (see page 168).
Will Emerson was named the Most Valuable Player in the Valerie Halford Final while Snake Bite’s John Paul Clarkin received the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony prize for Sophie.
Ten teams entered the Valerie Halford, ensuring plenty of strong sport early in the season at Guards Polo Club. However the sub final was guaranteed to be won by a member of the Arber family as Simon Arber’s Four Quarters Orange (rec ½ goal) found themselves in action against his wife Romilla’s Four Quarters Black. Romilla’s side came out best in this family tussle, beating Simon’s squad 4-3½. ✸

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE Bel Polo Team, winners of the Club’s Committee Cup. This team, patroned by Henry Lunn, joined the Club at the beginning of the 2022 season but quickly made their mark. In the final of this tournament, played in late May, they held their nerve to beat the experienced Club team AFB 7-6. Cata Lavinia was named Most Valuable Player and Chapelco, who was played by Ed Banner-Eve, received the Polo Times Best Playing Pony Prize.
This popular, eight-goal competition, often a warm-up for Club teams going into the Archie David Cup competition,
always delivers tough matches. This year’s tournament was no exception and the winners had to fight hard to win the game. They were trailing 4-3 at the end of the third chukka but rallied in the fourth to win thanks to a quartet of goals.
The sub final was equally competitive, going into extra time. Conosco came out best in this battle, narrowly beating Tchogan/ Libertine 9-8 thanks to that all important golden goal. ✸

MARCHFIELD/TAHANTO put in a successful claim for the Coworth Park Challenge Trophy in early July. They beat Four Quarters Orange 9-7 across five chukkas but were in command of this game from the first whistle. Such was their dominance that the scoreboard read 8-3 at half-time.
Four Quarters rallied in the second half, surprisingly preventing Saad Audeh’s Marchfield/Tahanto from scoring at all in the fourth. Simon Arber’s team then fired through three further goals, two from penalties, to only one in reply from Marchfield/Tahanto in the fifth to get them very much back in the game. However this improvement of form came too late to stop Marchfield/Tahanto from winning this important, 15-goal final.
Manuel Plaza, who scored six of his team’s nine goals, was named the Most Valuable Player. Meanwhile, his team-mate, Guillermo Terrera, received the Images of Polo Best Playing Pony prize. This was awarded to his Extra Ajo.
The sub final was a tighter affair, also across five chukkas. Maximilian Kirchhoff’s Snake Bite won this battle, beating Noor Khadra’s Green Gates 9-8. ✸

BEL POLO/SEGAVAS WIN PHOENICIAN GLORY
SUNDAY 10 JULY 2022
PHOENICIAN CUP
TEAMS
Final Bel Polo/Segavas, Polo Performance
Sub-Final Tchogan, Lemonade Club/ Delaney
BEL POLO/SEGAVAS claimed the final of the fast-paced Phoenician Cup, putting in a polished performance to win this 12-goal tournament 9-5. Ebe Sievewright, Director of the Guards Polo Academy, scored the first goal for Bel Polo/Segavas in the first 30 seconds of the match and the team never looked back.
Jonathan Hare’s Polo Performance remained in contention every step of the way, ensuring a thrilling game for players and spectators alike but they could not find a way to get themselves in front.
Some great play from Tommy Severn, who was later named Most Valuable Player, ensured Bel Polo/Segavas were 4-2 up at half-time. However this was still anyone’s game and with Manuel Plaza on firing duty
for Polo Performance nobody could relax for a moment. In fact, every time Bel Polo/ Segavas found some air in the score Manuel would successfully convert a penalty to bring it back to just a one-goal advantage.
The dynamic changed in the fourth though when Manuel uncharacteristically sent a 60-yard penalty wide. This was followed up a great run to goal by Ed Banner Eve to give Bel Polo/Segavas a three-goal lead with three minutes left to play. Tommy then confirmed this team’s superiority by successfully converting a 60-yard penalty in the final moments of the match.
The Cool Core Best Playing Pony prize went to Manuel Plaza’s Roger, a seven-yearold Argentine whom Manuel had played in the first and fourth chukkas. This rug, which was presented by Sarah Walker of Cool Core, is an innovative cooling and thermo regulation rug that stays 30% cooler than the horse’s body surface temperature. With the thermometer registering more than 30 degrees Celsius on Sunday this prize came into its own on The Queen’s Ground.
Guards Polo Club’s Chairman Brian Stein presented the prizes, including bottles of Lebanese wine which had been generously donated by the family of the late Eddy Arida, the founder of this tournament. Eddy was a life-playing member of the Club for more than 50 years and sponsored this 12-goal tournament for almost four decades.
With 12 teams entering this popular domestic tournament, the sub final was an equally competitive affair. Heiko Voelker’s Tchogan won this battle, beating Lemonade Club/Delaney 10-8. ✸

The damage was done in the third chukka. Two goals apiece from Khalid and Segundo Darritchon, plus a goal from Jose Araya, who was later named the Most Valuable Player, gave Ankora a 7-5 lead going into the fourth and final chukka. Further goals from Jose and Segundo sealed the deal and ensured the tournament’s impressive silver samovar headed home with Khalid. Meanwhile his team-mate Jose went home with the Images of Polo Best Playing pony prize for Nevada. The sub final, played earlier in the day, was a win for Mo Ladan’s Maidabino. QRH WIN BATTLE AGAINST RAF
SUNDAY 10 JULY 2022
INTER REGIMENTAL FINAL TEAMS
Final The Queen's Royal Hussars, The Royal Air Force. United Services Cup US Military, Armed Forces Polo Association
THE QUEEN’S ROYAL HUSSARS
(QRH) remained dominant in the annual Inter Regimental Polo tournament by winning the historic trophy for the second year in succession. In 2022, the army team overwhelmed The Royal Air Force (rec 1 ½ goals) 8-1½ to win the oldest polo trophy still played for in the UK. The Hussars team delivered plenty of strong play throughout all four chukkas and some excellent team-work ensured they were 4-1½ up at half time. Brigadier Nick Cowley, the youngest Brigadier in the British Army,
was always in the right place to push the Hussars team forward and some great runs from Captain Henry Amor ensured the Army team were in control from the first whistle. The result of such impressive, four-man play resulted in Captain Jamie Fry receiving the magnificent trophy, which was first played for in 1871, from Air Commodore Tim Brown, Director of the Armed Forces Polo Association.
The final score however does not do justice to the RAF team, who were making their debut in this Inter Regimental final. Officer Cadet Jonathan Perry, who was playing his own ponies, worked tirelessly under a scorching sun to keep the RAF team in contention and all four RAF players continued to battle until the final whistle. The RAF players did not go home empty handed though as the Pringle Cup, originally donated by Major Jack Pringle of the 8th Hussars, who dedicated his life to military polo after serving in the Second World War, was presented to the RAF’s Wing Commander Ed Whitechurch.
The other key trophy from this match was the Forbes-Cockell Award, for the unique moment of the match. Played in memory of Major Iain Forbes-Cockell, his daughters, Annabel and Emma, presented the prize, donated by La Martina, to the Hussars’ Lt The Hon William Cecil. Although he had a stand-out game, including scoring the final goal of the match, the Lieutenant’s unceremonious bucking off in front of the grandstand in the first 30 seconds of the match won him this trophy!
Earlier in the day a visiting US Military Team won the United Services Cup, played as part of the three-match Chapple Cup Series. Their opponents, the Armed Forces Polo Association may have lost the day here at Guards Polo Club, but won the Series, 2-1. ✸

THE ARMY TEAM won the Major General’s Cup for the second successive year but had little time to celebrate. Just four days later HM Queen Elizabeth ll died and so all four members of this team found themselves standing vigil at Her Majesty’s catafalque in Westminster Hall. This was a stark reminder that these players are soldiers first and polo players second.
Her Majesty’s death also meant that this tournament was the final competition to be played at Guards Polo Club in 2022, as the Club entered into a period of official mourning. So what a game to close the season on. There was little air between the Army squad and Edward Horswell’s Sladmore team, equally no stranger to success on this day, for all four chukkas.
Many had hoped that this game would go to extra time but the Army were able to conclude the battle in four chukkas,
winning 4-3. Sladmore’s Lord Milo Manton received the Most Valuable Player Prize, while the Polo Times Best Playing Pony rug was awarded to Monty. This pony had been played by the Welsh Guards Captain Oliver Powell for the Army team.
Six teams had entered this three-day contest and everyone had a chance of heading home with a prize. The Sub Final was won by Major Jamie Hayward’s Stable Cottage. They defeated Port Kiln Wink 6-3. A sub sub final saw a win for a Limitless Dogs team, who had a convincing 10-4½ win over the Household Cavalry team. ✸
