Self-love can be defined, as a way of living our life and appreciation for our self through actions that develop our emotional, spiritual, mental and physical wellbeing. 2020, has been a year in which we have needed to practise this more than ever. Self-healing through Reiki allows us to nurture and heal ourselves on a daily basis. Sometimes, in the busyness of life, we forget to self-heal on a regular basis. This winter, let us remind ourselves of the beauty of this wonderful healing practise.

vicechair@reikifed.co.uk

There has been much to celebrate at the UKRF this year. Some of the highlights include our online conference, the growth and contribution of our area representatives, our presence on social media, the sessions with the Reiki lineage bearer, Johannes Reindl and the regular online Reiki shares.

Key Updates: The UKRF team of volunteers continue to strive towards making the organization the best that it can be and are currently refining our vision and values. Since the last publication of Reiki World, we have been busy working on the following:

IHC – Integrated Health Care Collaborative The Integrated Healthcare Collaborative continues to provide support and advice, connecting with Parliament on our behalf. Our links with them have strengthened during this COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time,

new legislation has been created to finally acknowledge accredited complementary therapists as healthcare providers. This is, indeed, something to be celebrated!

COVID-19 The COVID-19 Guidelines continue to be updated on a regular basis. We are working closely with the IHC and CNHC to ensure that all information is correct. This is contributing to raising our professional profile within our industry.

Area Representatives Our Area Representatives continue play a vital role in supporting our members locally. Reiki shares are a wonderful way of connecting with our Reiki community. These wonderful healing sessions have been gratefully received by many members. (continued on page 4) REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

Meet our team...here are a few more of our lovely team members

Ann is a Professor of Physiology at the University of Arizona and Director of Mind-Body-Science. She is also a Reiki Master and has practiced Reiki on both people and animals for the past 20 years. Her degrees are BSc in Physics, University of Bristol, MSc in Radiation Physics and PhD in Physiology, University of London. Ann focuses on reducing the damaging effects of stress using Biofeedback, Reiki and Trauma Release Exercises. Ann bridges the gap between energy healing and quantitative scientific enquiry. Ann Baldwin - UKRF Research Group

I am an Associate Professor (Teaching and Learning) and the director of the Karuna Centre for Reiki Training. My first degree (BSc Hons) was in Psychology with International Relations and it was during my degree I found Reiki and undertook my dissertation on Reiki and Pain management. I have a number of teaching qualifications. a PgCert in Cardiovascular Rehab, and PhD in Education/Medical Education and I am a Fellow of the Society for Education and Training, a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a National Teaching Fellow. Reiki found me in 1998 after I was in a car crash and a friend offered me Reiki for the pain. I had no pain for 2 days and this took me on my Reiki journey. I took Reiki 1 in 1998, Reiki 2 in January 1999 and then undertook a 12 month programme to become a Reiki Master in 2000. I have been teaching Reiki since then and have worked with Reiki in the UK, China, Tibet, and North America.

Duncan Cross - UKRF Research Group Having worked with traditional Japanese Reiki since 2000, I feel privileged (if sometimes a bit overwhelmed) to be able to share my understanding and enthusiasm for Reiki, not only as a Master Teacher and Practitioner but also as a member of the management committee. I host the monthly online Reiki Share, I’m the Distance Healing Coordinator and am the Area Rep for Gloucestershire. Alongside my Reiki practice, I’m also a Yoga teacher (I’m an advanced Yoga Teacher qualified by Yoga Alliance International), Meditation teacher (BSoM qualified) and Sound Therapist (Peter Hess Institute qualified). I very much look forward to sharing my passion for Reiki with you all! Jo Fellows - UKRF Distance Healing Coordinator & Reiki Share Organiser REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

Reiki Share - show compassion to yourself… and others If you haven’t already heard, on the first Monday of each month at 7pm there’s now an online Reiki share for members of the UK Reiki Federation. It’s a perfect opportunity for us to get together, meditate and share the beautiful healing Reiki energy. It’s hosted by Jo Fellows, the Gloucestershire representative for the UK Reiki Federation, and if you’re interested in joining, you’ll find the link on our website and on the members only Facebook page. Jo talks us through the practice as a self-treatment, with the option of sending the healing elsewhere, if you’d prefer. All you need to do is to relax, getting super comfy - maybe lying down with a blanket and eye pillow or seated if you prefer – set your intention and let the energy flow. Because the practice is online, Jo doesn’t play background music, but instead suggests that if you’ve a favourite sound track you play that yourself, to accompany the practice (don’t worry you’ll be muted so that the other participants won’t hear it!)

The share usually starts with cleansing our energy with dry bathing to clear the meridian lines across the body and down the arms, followed by the start up Reiki technique, Hatsurei Ho. We’re then guided through the self-treatment. After all, it’s important for us to make time to work on ourselves, if we don’t work on ourselves, how can we can be a clear a channel as possible to others we are working with. As an analogy, think of a cup of tea. If I don’t have a cup of tea, how can I give others a cup of tea? Reiki works in this same way. Working together online with intention creates such a wonderful serene, peaceful energy state for us all to enjoy! === If you’d like more details, or have any suggestions for future Reiki shares, please do email Jo at: gloucestershire@reikifed.co.uk

Animal Reiki:

A summary from our september conference + latest news by Sue Malcolm Here you’ll find many of the questions asked at our conference about UKRF Animal Reiki work and our forthcoming Animal Reiki Practitioner membership launch, with summarised answers. I am hoping that when you read this you will find application details on our website …if not they will be coming very soon.

What started your interest in Animal Reiki, Sue? Sitting up in bed one Sunday morning many years ago, I experienced what I could only describe as an epiphany. I discovered my life’s purpose: to help sick, abandoned and cruelly treated animals. Co-incidences followed that led me to hearing amazing accounts of Reiki helping animals. I booked Reiki training and was soon hooked.

How did this lead to you becoming the UK Reiki Federation Animal Reiki Coordinator? Keen to learn more about Animal Reiki, and UKRF plans for Animal Reiki, I contacted UKRF on several occasions. The Chair at the time, Sylvia Clegg, rang me and asked “would you like to join our committee to drive the Animal Reiki agenda? We need nominations for your election within two weeks”.

For some time you’ve been working on a project for UKRF to recognise Animal Reiki Practitioners, why is this important? Lots of members work with animals, interest in Animal Reiki is growing and we regularly receive requests to recommend quality training courses. 10 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

But most importantly, if Animal Reiki is going to become a mainstream accepted therapy it needs to have veterinary support, with scientific evidence & National Occupational Standards. I believe that our work will enable Animal Reiki to be seen as a profession in its own right.

Where is this project up to now? We planned to launch Animal Reiki Practitioner membership at the end of October. However, I have led this project not just for UKRF but for all nine Reiki Council organisations, and the publishing of the book Understanding Animals: A working guide for Reiki Practitioners has unfortunately created unexpected delay. Animal Reiki Master and Teacher membership and Animal Reiki Practitioner course approval will follow, but in all cases, completion of the Animal Reiki Practitioner membership application is the first step.

What does the application entail? There will be a few prerequisites e.g. you must be trained to level II in Reiki and Animal Reiki and your insurance needs to cover Reiki for animals and people. An application form then needs to be completed

ANIMAL REIKI

to demonstrate applied knowledge in Reiki and Understanding Animals. This includes essential legislation and guidance, health and safety considerations, basic body language and offering Reiki to animals in different situations and emotional states.

What if understanding animals wasn’t included within the training of some Animal Reiki Practitioners? I will be running Animal Reiki online events in the New Year to help everyone interested in Animal Reiki membership, whatever your stage in your journey. I’ll go through the application and understanding animals. Understanding Animals: A working guide for Reiki Practitioners describes you all you need to know and I will be running a separate event on this topic to support the publication.

In relation to understanding animals, what is your single most important piece of advice? Let the animal lead … and always start by offering Reiki hands off/remotely or distantly unless the animal straight away pushes his/her body into your hands.

What about members who have offered Reiki to animals professionally for many years but have no formal training? Such members may apply if the criteria are met and at least 100 hours of Animal Reiki sessions have been carried out. Experience and expertise will be clear from the completed application.

Sue, this all sounds very exciting but how does this leave the Reiki Practitioner who offers Reiki occasionally to a client’s animal or the cat next door but isn’t a trained Animal Reiki Practitioner? They can carry on doing this but will find the Understanding Animals book helpful, unless the essential knowledge and actions within it are known.

What is the benefit of becoming an Animal Reiki member or having a recognised course? Two key benefits are credibility and publicity on our website directory. UKRF is the largest UK Reiki organisation and we are regularly asked for details of Animal Reiki Practitioners and Teachers.

I suspect a few of our members may be wanting to apply at the NOS level next year...should they apply for this level now and progress or wait? This will be considered as part 1 of the NOS application so applying now enables a listing on our website but its personal choice. Look out for an email and details on our website…. and book early for the FREE zoom online events. Best wishes,

Sue Malcolm Animal Reiki Coordinator

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - WINTER 2020

Reiki Research at Full Steam We need you to take part in our exciting and ground-breaking research projects! At the UK Reiki Federation Research Group, we have now moved on from mainly reviewing existing scientific publications and started to work on our own research projects. With the help of two new members, Ann Baldwin, Professor for Physiology at the University of Tucson, Arizona, and Duncan Cross, Professor for Education at the University of Bolton, we now have the resources and expertise to take this step. They are joining the existing team of Vicky McLelland, PhD, who has conducted many years of clinical research within the NHS, Anne-Marie Carratu, Chair of UK Reiki Federation, and myself as the Research Coordinator. It is hard to contain my excitement about this big development! Using different methods, from online surveys and client feedback questionnaires to research in clinical settings and specialised laboratories, we are aiming to dynamically increase our scientific understanding of Reiki.

12 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

This research will enable us to quantify and evaluate Reiki experiences and outcomes in a variety of ways. Of course, we will update all members regularly on the new insights. To start with, we will focus on three amazing projects:

1.

A web-based survey focussing on Reiki teaching and learning to establish a better understanding of why people came to Reiki, how they experienced their training, and how this laid the foundation of their individual practice. This will allow us to collect data to subsequently create guidelines and support for future Reiki teaching and get a thorough overview of current standards of Reiki training. Work on the survey has started, and we aim to be able to send it out at the end of January or early February.

2.

A unique ethics form for Reiki research. It will define the standards on which our research is based and be also made available to all members as a guide for their own research and practice. It can be used as a self-assessment form to make sure that professional scientific and ethical standards are met in all our practice.

3.

The creation of a standardised feedback form for Reiki treatments that can be used by Reiki Federation members to collect experiences from their clients. The data will allow us to evaluate the degree of symptom improvement experienced after Reiki treatments on a large scale. Of course, everything will be confidential, anonymised and follow GDPR guidelines. Our aim is to make this one of the biggest surveys of Reiki experiences ever undertaken! Reiki Practitioner members of the UK Reiki Fed can already register to take part - please send an email to research@reikifed.co.uk stating that you would like to be involved and you will be the first to be informed when the project is ready to launch in spring.

REIKI RESEARCH Over time, we will also move into clinical research for which a protocol is currently being developed. All these projects are designed to raise the standards of Reiki training and make it more acceptable within mainstream medical healthcare.

But... none of these projects will work without you!! Being the second biggest Reiki organisation in Europe, we aim to utilize this amazing asset and ask you all to join in the research. So, please make sure to participate in the online survey when we send it out in the new year. And please check out the regularly updated information in the research section of our website - www.reikifed.co.uk - where you can also find out more about the members of the Research Group and find more information on already published scientific research in Reiki. Torsten A. Lange UKRF Research Coordinator

Being the biggest Reiki organisation in Europe, we aim to utilize this amazing asset and ask you all to join in the research.

The Importance of Gassho Breathing by Ann Baldwin PhD - Professor of Physiology, University of Arizona, Director of Mind-Body-Science This is an excerpt (slightly modified) from Ann Baldwin’s new book, Reiki in Clinical Practice. A Science-Based Guide, Chapter 4, Optimizing the Use of Reiki with your Patients. Published by Handspring Publishing, UK, February 2020. ISBN13: 978-1-912085-36-1. https://www.handspringpublishing.com/product/ using-reiki-in-clinical-practice/

Practitioner: Regulation of Breathing Mikao Usui taught breath control to his Reiki students in the form of the “Gassho” breath, where the term “Gassho”, as used in Usui Reiki Ryoho, means “palms placed together in front of the chest” or “prayer position”, and is often thought of as bringing unity to the body. See steps below.

The Gassho Breathing Technique is very simple: •

Sit either on the floor or upright in a chair in a relaxed position with your hands in prayer position.

Concentrate on breathing in and out slowly through your nose.

With each in breath, imagine that Reiki energy is entering your crown and filling your entire body.

With each out breath visualize that you are exhaling Reiki from every pore in your body and off out into infinity.

Practising the Gassho Breathing Technique before giving a Reiki session brings with it many benefits: • • • • •

Makes one relaxed and calm but alert Makes one think clearly Improves one’s memory Helps one see things in perspective Is healthy for the heart

14 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

It is fascinating that Mikao Usui realized a century ago before the advent of physiological monitoring technology, that this type of breathing has such farreaching physical, mental and emotional benefits. In addition, he understood that practicing the Gassho Technique prior to giving a Reiki session would bring stillness to the practitioner’s mind and body thus enabling them to open up to the Reiki flow. During the last twenty years or so, it has been discovered that breathing a little deeper and slower than usual (at about 6 breaths per minute) while recalling a pleasurable sensation (such as Reiki flowing through the body), or experiencing a positive emotion, such as appreciation, gratitude and compassion, profoundly alters the autonomic nervous system (ANS) (Moss, 2004. Psychophysiology Today: The Magazine for MindBody Medicine. 2004; 1: 4-11). The ANS is the part of the nervous system responsible for control of the bodily functions not consciously directed, such as the heartbeat and digestive processes. The practice of Vinyasa yoga, which involves slow, deep breathing, affects the ANS similarly (Tay and Baldwin, 2015. Yoga & Physical Therapy, 2015; 5(4): 214. doi:10.4172/2157-ˇ7595.1000214).

‘...breathing a little deeper and slower than usual (at about 6 breaths per minute) while recalling a pleasurable sensation (such as Reiki flowing through the body), or experiencing a positive emotion, such as appreciation, gratitude and compassion, profoundly alters the autonomic nervous system.’ The ANS consists of two components; sympathetic nerves that speed up heart rate, and parasympathetic nerves that slow it down. During mental stress the sympathetic nerves are highly activated and heart rate increases, whereas during relaxation parasympathetic nerve stimulation predominates and heart rate decreases. Respiration rate is closely coupled to the relative degree of stimulation of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves. Breathing at 5-6 breaths per minute, such as during Gassho meditation, creates a balance between sympathetic

REIKI WORLD and parasympathetic stimulation that maximizes coherence, or synchrony between respiration and heart rate. When a person is in a state of coherence, their heart rate increases as they breathe in and decreases as they breathe out. The sympathetic/parasympathetic balance that is created during coherence leads to optimal cardiac function, improved oxygenation of the blood, enhanced cognitive ability and focusing skills, and a broadened emotional perspective. These are all qualities that aid a Reiki practitioner in providing a caring, compassionate and effective Reiki session to their client. By contrast, research has shown that mental stress and negative emotions such as frustration, anger, anxiety, and worry lead to heart rhythm patterns that appear incoherent—highly variable and erratic. Overall, if a person is feeling negative emotions there is less synchronization in the reciprocal action of the parasympathetic and sympathetic branches of the nervous system. This de-synchronization, if sustained, taxes the nervous system, impeding the efficient synchronization and flow of information throughout the brain, making it difficult to remember things and to make rational decisions.

Lack of coordination between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous branches also leads to imbalanced emotions, reinforcing the existing negative emotions that first triggered the imbalance. Remembering to practice the Gassho Breathing Technique before providing Reiki will ensure restoration of an optimal autonomic balance in the practitioner as shown by the heart rate variability recordings of a person when they practice Gassho Breathing (Figure 1) and when they do not (Figure 2). The Gassho HRV recording shows a waveform typical of a coherent state, whereas the no Gassho recording demonstrates the much more random pattern associated with normal breathing. Recent research from the Institute of HeartMath strongly suggests that if a person is in a coherent state when they interact with another individual, then that individual will also become more coherent (McCraty 2017, Hypothesis and Theory, 2017; 5: article 267). Therefore if a Reiki practitioner becomes coherent by practicing Gassho Breathing prior to giving a Reiki session, their client is also likely to benefit from increased coherence. Visual Note Taking by Hilary de Vries

I’ve always found that trying to take purely written notes that would both reflect the sessions with a client and help build up a picture over time really didn’t work for me. The words didn’t seem to express what I wanted to record and I looked to see if there was maybe another way. That’s when I hit upon the idea of doing it visually. I created a sheet with the outline of a figure that could be used to draw the areas that had been worked on on both the front and back of the body, but still leaving room for written notes where needed (diagram 1). I use a red pen to contrast with the black and white of the page, which keeps things visually clear. Areas where either a lot of time is spent or there is a lot happening are solidly coloured. Where a good amount of time is spent but the energy is less intense are striped, with the distance between the lines reflecting a greater or lesser amount happening; this offers a great level of subtlety where required. And areas that are only lightly worked on but worth noting have a line drawn around them to mark out that area (diagram 2). Any extra written notes to either clarify the drawing or that isn’t covered by it can be written to the side, including recommendations and client experiences. I find through using the sheet that note taking is much

easier and more concise yet also far more detailed and better reflects the session. Another useful thing is that by taking notes this way it’s easier for any patterns between sessions to become apparent. In diagram 3, showing a series of appointments over a few weeks, it can be quickly seen that an area in the small of the back is consistently marked as a solid coloured area. Other areas tend to be more variable, but there are still some themes emerging (note: these drawings were made to illustrate this article and are not taken from actual client notes). The basic sheet can be used in the way that reflects your own style of working. Instead of red, for instance, you might want to colour different areas using chakra colours, indicate areas with labels or arrows, or draw hand placements and colour them to reflect the temperature you feel in an area; all are possible. Not everyone maybe has the confidence to draw their own figure, so I’m happy to send a pdf of my sheet on request. The sheet is useful if you keep paper notes, but you may need to find a way to adapt it to be able to use on computer. Hopefully those of you who have struggled like me with the standard approach to recording notes will find this visual approach both easier and more natural. To request a copy of the sheet for your own use contact me via my website at simplyreiki. scot Hilary de Vries Reiki Master Practitioner, UKRF member and composer/musician near Inverness

What happened when I got Covid... by Alistair Elliott

My daughter, who lives with us and works as a secondary school teacher, got Covid first. Then her boyfriend, then my wife, then me. Within days, and 4 positive test results later, all 4 of us in the house were under a legal duty to self-isolate, as instructed every day by calls and texts from NHS test and trace. Fortunately I had Reiki in my toolkit to help get me through, but at times when I felt very rough it felt like too much effort to give myself Reiki, as I lay in an inert, apathetic, weakened state.

long-Covid, featuring people still not remotely their usual selves 6 months after contracting Covid. Then I started thinking that I may not properly recover. This was when the Reiki principle, ‘just for today, do not worry’ really came into its own. I combined it with affirmations like ‘I feel well…. I feel limber’. These helped me shift my focus to the future I wanted rather than imagining the worst. One of the beauties of the Reiki principles is that in whatever situation I use them, they always have something relevant to say.

We had all made it through the spring and summer, but we were early casualties of the second wave in October. My daughter and boyfriend bounced back quickly “ ...the Reiki principle, but my wife and I, both in 60‘just for today, do not plus age group, took a week longer before we started to feel worry’ really came into anything like our normal selves. its own” We were all fortunate that our symptoms were unpleasant rather than critical – headaches, brain fog, bodily aches, sore throat, cough, no energy, diarrhoea. They prevented me from working as I couldn’t concentrate and had no energy. The main recommended treatment was rest and lots of warm fluids. My herbalist also sent me a special warming tea mix of licorice, ginger and thyme, which I drank gallons of. She also prescribed a herbal tincture echinacea and boneset which I took 3 times a day. For the headaches, I took paracetamol. I spent a week lying mostly in bed or on the sofa. To encourage my body’s healing I lay on my back with one hand on my chest and one hand on my stomach and gave Reiki to myself. Sometimes I visualised holding a coronavirus in the palms of my hands and blasting it with Reiki so it became a ball of healing light that I then imagined inserting inside my body. Keeping positive was a challenge. In my head I kept seeing those images we saw on TV every night in the spring, of people in hospital on ventilators. Although I had no breathing problems, I worried that I would develop them. One day I made the mistake of listening to a radio programme about

It has taken my wife and me longer than the isolation period to recover. It was such a relief to get to the end of isolation and be allowed to go out again, that I overdid it by doing too much too soon and I had to spend the next few days making sure I continued to rest. I will also continue to be vigilant about not getting infected again. Once is enough. As I write this, over 3 weeks after my first symptoms, my energy levels are at 80% of normal, and I still have an increased tendency towards getting headaches. I’m grateful to come out the other side of this illness unlike the tens of thousands in the UK not so fortunate. Reiki was my loyal companion along the way, always there when I needed it, as it has been since I was attuned over 7 years ago. Normally I have focused on Reiki as a form of hands-on healing for others and as a form of spiritual practice for myself. During this Covid episode, physical self-healing came to the fore. REIKI WORLD

Positive outcomes by Lisa Pryce-Jones

During the pandemic Reiki was introduced into the leading disability charity Leonard Cheshire’s six care homes in Wales. I had been working part time for the charity and had resigned to enable me to focus all of my time in my established business based in South Wales as a Hypnotherapist and Healer (Reiki Master, Spiritual Healer and Crystal Healer) and to start teaching both Reiki and Hypnotherapy. However, when the lockdown happened I asked if I could use my complementary therapy skills to help both staff and residents. Fortunately, Leonard Cheshire Wales Management were receptive to all the help that they could get and agreed. We offered staff Hypnotherapy and Healing sessions and residents Reiki sessions. All sessions were carried out using Zoom which I was both unfamiliar with and unsure of at first. However, the technology was completely reliable and the sessions were conducted effortlessly. In addition to myself, my partner David Muzzlewhite, who is also a Reiki Master and Spiritual Healer, carried out Zoom healing sessions for residents. Additionally, I organised for a further nine voluntary Reiki Healers to join us in sending distant healing to all of the Leonard Cheshire care homes across Wales. The residents at Leonard Cheshire have very complex and long-term disabilities which often makes communication very limited. It was so wonderful to receive feedback from the residents such as seeing various colours and feeling sensations such as floating.

I suggested to my partner that we could start to raise money towards this by him making bird/ squirrel picnic benches. He could not wait to get started and allow his creativity to flow. We set an ambitious target of £1,000 and as at the time of writing we are delighted to share that we exceeded the target and have raised £1,027 so far. Hopefully this will contribute to providing the first healing room very soon. If you would like to purchase a bird/ squirrel table for the nutty price of £15 plus £3 P&P please visit https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ lisa-pryce-jones1 Additionally, we prepared two fruit hampers for the two homes that were local to us. Over 80 pieces of fruit, which were energised with Reiki, were provided in each hamper and placed in the staff rooms to encourage staff to eat more fruit. Whilst the care homes in Wales have had some staff and residents affected directly by the coronavirus, compared with other care homes, Leonard Cheshire have been extremely fortunate. Whilst very strict hygiene measures and using satisfactory PPE is a huge factor I am sure that our contribution of sharing universal Reiki healing energy certainly helped too. Lisa Pryce-Jones UKRF Member Hypnotherapy & Healing www.hypnotherapyandhealing.co.uk

As at the time of writing Leonard Cheshire staff had 74 therapy sessions (Hypnotherapy and Reiki), residents had 82 healing sessions and a further 549 sessions of distant healing was sent to the care homes. The residents’ healing sessions were held in their bedrooms. We thought it would be wonderful for the residents to have a healing room within each care home that could be beautifully decorated with a large screen so that residents could see us rather than using an ipad or mobile phone. This would also enable the residents to feel like they were going out for their Reiki treatment.

Science and Trust: Distance Healing with ‘QiKi Gong’ “What we have called matter is energy, whose vibration has been so lowered as to be perceptible to the senses. There is no matter.” Albert Einstein

Alan -

I started to wonder about Distance Reiki and other forms of non-contact help we all offer to others. I love playing with concepts and feelings. What might tie Distance Healing, Quantum Mechanics, Entanglement, Music, Merging of Vibrations, Primal Movement, Law of Vibration?

For me Reiki works with and through all of these frequencies and Distance Reiki would seem to be focused in the Delta frequency / state.

Ruthie -

In the 20 plus years that I’ve been a Reiki Practitioner I have sent Distance Reiki hundreds of times, usually from a quiet, reflective space in the traditional way I was taught. I am sending Reiki even more often now as I made the decision a few months ago not to do any contact Reiki until the end of this year.

Everything in the universe is vibrating at a particular frequency. Our thoughts, feelings, emotions all transmit a particular vibration. Quantum mechanics has demonstrated how a wave frequency can be altered. When different waves meet they start to vibrate together at the same frequency. They “sync However, since we’ve been playing with QiKi up” in ways that may seem mysterious. Identifying Gong I’ve been sending in a different way. I find an exact opposite positive thought every fibre of my body engages to counter a negative thought is “Everything in the and resonates as I let the Reiki using this principle. If you think energies guide me and I move with about the word “stress” then think universe is vibrating them intuitively, so the movement about the word “relax”. REIKI AND QIGONG Now for our QiKi Distance Healing, powerful, vibrational movement, which we call: “Lighting Up the Universe” https://youtu.be/aj7DDTZ39rs Draw the distance symbol into your hands and/or in front of you then step into it. Take time to breathe and relax, mentally completing any other preparatory steps you would normally take. Stand comfortably with your feet about mid shoulder width apart and slightly bouncy knees. Hold your hands softly in front of you at about sacral chakra level. Slowly raise your hands to about chest height, then palms up open out to the sides, focusing on the Reiki energies and your intention.

As you lower your hands, gently turn them to have palms outward facing and bring back to your centre line until the backs of your hands touch. Raise your hands up your centre line, unfurling them to the level of your face until your fingertips are touching.

Now with complete sensitivity and awareness of your intention flick your hands away from each other sending the Reiki energies and intention flying out to their destination as they light up the Universe. Feel the whoosh of energy as you release. Bring your hands around in an arc and then slowly lower to your sides and relax. You may choose to repeat the same intention or to change to another as you float through the beautiful movements a number of times. When you have completed your intention/s, slowly bring your hands to Gassho, give thanks, complete your send as you would normally, and go gently about your day.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - WINTER 2020

The Distance Between by Warren Shwartz

Many of us have no doubt been affected by the distance that has been enforced for our own wellbeing by the government. Distance between ourselves and loved ones and distance between ourselves and our clients. As the days, weeks and months tick by a question that still remains but now seems to be pushed to the back burner is ‘when will this be over, when will things return to normal?’. The question I pose or return to as somebody who works with internal and external energy is ‘why, or perhaps what are we waiting for?’. The opportunity of more time to devote our energies to that which serves us and work on transmuting that which no longer serves us has personally been a gift enabling me to finish off and publish my first book, undertake further training in my field as a Shibashi Qigong instructor and Reiki Master and really look within through my meditation practice to find resilience and adaptability. A kind of evolution I feel. We are faced with uncertainty, but as Master Mingtong Gu says ‘The biggest factor affecting our immune system and in turn our vulnerability to a virus is stress, anxiety and worry’. So with this in mind while many allowed internal turmoil to take hold, I took to moving into the flow.

With a background of working with plants and nature. I had in the past put to the test the power of words and intention as I witnessed different outcomes and ratios of flowering from sweetpeas planted in consistent conditions, with the only changing variable being the words, utterances and energy given to them. As a father with young children I acknowledged this is a unique time to raise our vibration, through our thoughts, words and what we surround ourselves with both visually or mentally. While more and more people seemed to be struggling with the required adaptability of the times, I saw this as an opportunity that I feel deep gratitude for, that being: working distantly. The backbone of my business really began flourishing after the American Journal of Psychiatry and Geriatric Studies published a recommendation that people take up Qigong as a conjunctive and preventative practice against Covid-19 and due to my willingness to turn to the medium of Zoom. Working in front of a screen was something I never thought would work for me, indeed I had previously thought it was against my flow, but I embraced it and for now feel it is a real blessing. No combustible engines, no traffic, no travel, no small talk, no rental costs for therapy rooms or studios - for me this was wonderful.

26 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

REIKI WORLD After some time and now running 6 weekly sessions sharing this, equipping others with the tools to open their internal energy channels and to feel their external Qi field (EQF) my enquiries from people aligned to Reiki began to come in. Again, I was initially reluctant but I soon allowed any resistance to pass. We are all different and all run our businesses in a way that resonates with us.

What I have chosen to do and which works for me when giving Reiki is: • I offer a discount from face to face contact sessions • Set up a Zoom session • I light a candle • Take a face to face consultation • Take five minutes for a short, guided body scan meditation (as a British school of meditation registered teacher I find this has become a useful part of every Zoom session I run) • Allow my client time to lie down and put their own music on • I then turn the volume down and place my own music on • I sit, feet flat on the ground connected to Earth energy • I face the client and palms facing them set my intention and evoke the symbols • I focus my intention and energy towards them rather than particular hand positions, for fifty minutes

While this will not be for everyone it has certainly enabled me to keep a stream of income through challenging times and feedback has been nothing but positive. I have found having a visual connection seems to keep my clients feeling they are connecting in a physical capacity. Warren Shwartz UKRF Member

REIKI SHARES

What is a Reiki share?

Holding or attending a Reiki share is a wonderful way of meeting other Reiki students, Practitioners, Teachers and all those interested in finding out more about Reiki. The concept of a Reiki share is for everyone attending to both give and receive Reiki healing in a supportive and loving environment. There may be three or more people to each treatment couch, and whilst one person is laying on the couch everyone else is giving Reiki to them. When that session is finished someone else will then be treated. This rotation continues until everyone has received a treatment. Please observe social distancing measures in place at the current time and wear appropriate PPE.

Reiki share benefits For those who may wish to build their confidence in giving treatments or for those who have little or no experience of using Reiki, the shares are a good way to build their confidence and knowledge. Reiki Practitioners can also benefit enormously from attending Reiki shares as by nature they are very giving people and wish to heal others, sometimes forgetting their own needs. Reiki shares are an opportunity for them to receive Reiki themselves. Reiki shares are also a good way to meet other like-minded people and discuss experiences of using receiving or training in Reiki. The UK Reiki Federation holds a list of members who currently hold shares in that area so if you are interested in attending a share then do please see the list and contact the member holding it. If you hold a Reiki share, please contact the office to get your share added to our list. Reiki shares are usually held once a month and serve to be a focal point for ongoing contact and support. Participating in a Reiki share is very beneficial to the individual and to the whole group collectively, it is an amazing experience to be part of a group meeting together to heal and be healed.

Reiki Principles The UK Reiki Federation prides itself on working to these principles and values.

The Reiki Principles To bring the spiritual depth into everyday life, Mikao Usui, the founder of the system of Reiki, created a set of five principles (or precepts). They can be found on his memorial stone in the grounds of the Saihoji Temple in Tokyo. He called them...

‘The secret method of inviting good fortune. The marvellous medicine for all sickness.’ Just for today: Do not anger Do not worry Be grateful Work with diligence Be kind to others Every morning and every night sit in Gassho (palms placed together) and speak these words out loud in your heart - Mikao Usui
