REIKI WORLD
UKRF welcomes diversity Hello everyone, I do hope 2022 has seen a much brighter start for all and as we continue to move through the year may there be positive and happy times to look forward to. As we move into the Spring Equinox, where we take time to focus on new life and light, new beginnings, path, and seeds, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a member of the UK Reiki Federation management team and highlight what I will be focusing on in the coming year. I joined the UK Reiki Federation in 2020 after training and certifying as a Reiki Practitioner a few years before. In 2018 I chose to take a career break to enable my path in complementary therapies, and at that time I had no idea which or what therapies I would connect with and want to study. I did a lot of research into which types of complementary therapies were available but most of all which types resonated with me the most, and Reiki was the one I felt most at ease with and more importantly aligned with me and my values and thus my journey into Reiki began. Fast forward to 2022 and I am honoured to be leading the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DE&I) efforts for the Federation, our members and community. The DE&I function has become a critical part of any organisation and at the UK Reiki Federation we want to ensure that we are creating a space and community where our members and friends feel safe, included and trust in our community. Over the coming months I will be looking in detail at how we can identify with our members and community, what we are doing well and what we aren’t doing well and what programmes and initiatives can help us improve and connect with you on deeper level. I would be very happy to hear from you with comments and suggestions on how we can do more to create this space, what topics would you be interested in hearing about, what are we doing well and what could we improve on. Reiki in Your Hands by Dr. Karen Janes
I received my first Reiki attunement almost twenty years ago. Since then I have no idea how many hundreds, or probably thousands of hours I have spent with my hands cupped over mine or someone else’s body letting that wonderful healing energy flow through them. Even with all that experience there are still occasional moments where I don’t feel a huge amount happening in my hands. These days I never doubt that the Reiki is working, but I used to. I also find that most of the questions from my students about ‘not feeling’ Reiki usually relate to what they notice, or don’t notice, in their hands. This article explores some of the reasons why what you feel in your hands can vary, why it doesn’t matter and what can be more useful to focus on instead to help you develop and deepen your Reiki practice, and feel more confident with it. Why you might not always feel Reiki in your hands It is very common when you are new to Reiki to not feel much happening in your hands. It can be hard to trust those somewhat subjective sensations, such as heat or tingling, that you might feel, particularly as they often come and go. Whilst this is probably not that surprising for the newly attuned it may be more confusing to a seasoned practitioner. Here are some of the reasons why this might be:
1 2 3 4 5 6
As your practice develops, the feelings of Reiki flowing through your hands becomes a sort of ‘new normal’; you essentially “get used to it”. This doesn’t mean the Reiki isn’t working but experiencing less sensation can wobble your confidence. Whilst it is wonderful that you can use Reiki, (with one or both hands), while doing other things, you are more likely to be distracted when doing it this way. Again, it doesn’t mean it isn’t working, but you may not feel as much. There can be a natural variation in what you might call the ‘rate of flow’ of Reiki. Many factors, such as how much Reiki you’ve been doing, how tense you feel or how hectic your week has been, can affect the rate at which your body absorbs Reiki and can make it harder to feel. It is also worth noting here that it is practice, rather than more advanced attunement levels, that will best help your Reiki flow. Different areas of your body may have different sensitivities to Reiki and this can change at different times. Getting to know where your body most seems to appreciate Reiki can be really useful when time is short. Warmth in the hands is a commonly experienced sensation when practicing Reiki and it can be easy to rely on this as a guide for how well the Reiki is flowing. If you are feeling cold or tense this can be more unreliable and therefore knock your confidence. When you are unwell, physically or emotionally, it can be harder to do Reiki on yourself and you may feel less going on. If you have someone else who is able to give you Reiki I would always recommend taking advantage of that, but if not, it will still be working, even if you don’t feel much.

REIKI WORLD What can you look for instead? Understanding more about why you sometimes don’t feel much in your hands can be reassuring. There are, however, other things that you can look for that are even more important and helpful in guiding you in your Reiki practice than the sensations in your hands. The answer here lies in how Reiki makes you feel. After all, this is really why you do it; however magical and fun the sensations in your hands are, it is the benefits that are important. There are a number of different ways that you might experience Reiki:
1 2 3 4 5
Sensations in your hands whilst practicing – commonly experienced as temperature changes or tingling sensations. Sensations in your body underneath your hands whilst practicing – similar to the first one you may feel temperature changes or movement. More general sensations in your body whilst receiving Reiki – feelings of relaxation, sleepiness, overall warmth and peacefulness or sensations away from where your own or the practitioner’s hands are in that moment. Feelings immediately following a Reiki session: feeling calmer, have less pain or enjoy a better night’s sleep. Longer term benefits: better digestion, ongoing improvement with sleep, feeling more able to tackle life’s challenges or more balanced. This article continues on page 12.

Emotional Techniques: Beyond the Anger by Hilary de Vries
In the Winter 2021 issue of Reiki World I wrote about anger, looking at it from within a Reiki context, as well as a wider perspective, and its negative and positive aspects. As we engage more with anger in a positive fashion, rather than try to shut off from it or negate its existence, we may conversely find ourselves with less of a need for any anger in the first place. How can this be?
Meaningful action can only come about after a degree of clarity is reached. Without clarity, we remain in a reactive and potentially destructive state. We need to take that step back. There is also the effect of tiredness or low blood sugar on mood, often described as being hangry. There is little point in trying to process this as anger when what we need is either a nap or something to eat. Again, clarity can help reveal this to us if we’re not already aware of it.
One reason may be because our anger has been recognised, and, where necessary, safely expressed. We ...there is much are no longer trying to hide from it, and this recognition of it and its to be gained from effects on us can create an inner freedom. Working with it gives us opening our arms to the opportunity to reflect on its our emotions and root causes and instigate change in a more controlled and fruitful accepting them... manner. Another reason may be because the anger is only a mask for or is part of a range of other emotions, such as fear and pain. During autogenic discharge, for example, a technique used in Autogenic Therapy, a person may start expressing feelings of anxiety that then move into anger, and then find themselves crying or feeling frightened as layers and interconnected emotions flow from one to the other. Similarly in a Reiki session emotions may reveal themselves, although this occurrence tends to happen spontaneously, as compared with the more structured approach of Autogenics. Walter Lubeck in the book ‘The Spirit of Reiki’ says ‘Anger or annoyance stops as soon as the hidden intention of the energy …is turned into meaningful action’. In ‘Working With Anger’ Buddhist nun Thubten Chodron describes it as ‘a mind free from anger can more quickly find a good solution.’
14 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF
As Reiki practitioners or those who have been attuned to Reiki, how do we attain that clarity through Reiki for ourselves? Aside from regular self-Reiki, there are a couple of Reiki techniques that are useful. One is the Reiki Gassho Meditation where you bring your hands together and bring your attention to your middle fingers, allowing your mind to settle, which in turn allows clarity to come. A good description of this technique and its benefits can be found in Frank Arjava Petter’s book ‘This is Reiki’. It creates the space for the mind to settle and brings it out of an emotional state that can prevent clear thinking. Another useful technique and one that can, through practice, be used in a wide variety of situations, especially where a longer, more meditative technique isn’t possible, is Hikari no Kokyu-ho/Light Breathing. It can be found in ‘A Modern Reiki Method For Healing’ by Hiroshi Doi. The basic principal is allowing your mind to settle and visualising yourself being filled with the
REIKI WORLD white light of Reiki. It also involves bringing your hands together in Gassho but has a more active feel than the Gassho Meditation above as you are consciously filling yourself with energy. It also shares some of the other technique’s meditative qualities. Filling yourself with light through Light Breathing helps break you out of any focus on your emotions, pulls you out of the focus on self and helps reconnect you to Life, to the bigger reality. Because you are filled with this sense of light, your focus can shift and this shift can reduce what feels like the allconsuming emotion of the moment. Through regular practice it becomes possible to carry out an edited version of the technique, also described in the book, so you can connect to this sense of light quickly and powerfully when you find yourself in noisy or busy situations and can feel difficult emotions rising. This makes this technique particularly useful to call on when there isn’t the opportunity to step out of a situation and find a quiet place to let emotions settle. It can still be a good idea later to take time for longer periods of reflection and calm, allowing deeper emotions or ones that take time to rise to the surface to be processed more fully.
It is worth giving ourselves the room to feel and to observe those feelings, because, just like anger, the holding in of other emotions can have a detrimental effect on our wellbeing. Reiki can both help show us the way by encouraging us to work with its energy and can support us as we explore and reveal what we carry inside. Again, as in the article on anger, I would encourage anyone who finds the emotions that rise up to be too overwhelming at times to look beyond Reiki for additional means of support. From health to inner contentment to finding calm in the midst of struggle and a growing connection with ourselves, with others and with life, there is much to be gained from opening our arms to our emotions and accepting them, however difficult that may sometimes feel. To quote Tadao Yamaguchi, ‘Once you start to appreciate the enormity of the blessings that nature provides you will be genuinely filled with joy.’ Ultimately it is that sense of inner joy we seek that makes the journey through our emotions a fruitful one.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SPRING 2022
Reiki Journey, Teaching and Impact Survey by Dr. Duncan Cross
Last year the Research Team had a review of the work we were undertaking and what we wanted to achieve. There is a lot of work being undertaken around the world on Reiki in medical settings, but there is very little research on practitioners’ experience of Reiki. We developed a survey in early 2021 to take a snapshot of the UK Reiki Federation membership and the survey was approved through our new ethics procedure, and launched in April 2021. The survey was in three parts investigating how people came to learn Reiki, their educational journey with Reiki, and finally the impact that it had on their lives. We presented some of the highlights of the survey at the annual conference in September 2021 and we are finalising the report for the Annual General Meeting. However, we are able to share an overview of the survey results. 128 members responded to the survey, though not all 128 responded to all parts of the survey. All participants responded to part 1 of the survey, we saw a reduction to 78 participants in part 2 of the survey and in some questions, e.g. Master level training, this reduced to 59 participants. In part three of the survey 73 participants responded to the questions. Some of the change in number may be because participants found the survey too long, submitted early, or timed out in their response. As an initial survey to the membership this was a useful exercise but there are many lessons to be learnt including: • • • •
Length of survey Number of question areas Promotion of survey Use of Survey Monkey (as a tool for data collection)
A shorter survey may have also gained more responses. The survey did not collect sufficient demographic data, as at the time it was believed it was not needed, however this is being reviewed and shorter surveys in the future are likely to include more demographic data to capture the diversity of the membership. There were some issues in the data collection of what training was undertaken. This section was longer than all sections and had significant repetition to capture what was taught at different levels. In this section there is also a potential bias as we were relying on members to tell us what they had been taught and memory may have impacted on those answers. Data was also collected for multiple styles of Reiki but for the purpose of this report only the primary style of Reiki reported was analysed and discussed.
18 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF
REIKI WORLD
Part One – Reiki Journey The average age of respondents was 55, the average age of first undertaking reiki training was 43 and the average length of practice was 12 years. This presents a picture of an older membership; however, it should be noted that less than 10% of the UKRF membership responded to the survey and we are seeing only a snapshot of the membership. Most people were introduced to Reiki through a friend and undertook training for spiritual development and wellbeing. The vast majority progress to Reiki 2 training ‘to practice’, however it was not clear from the data whether this was to practice professionally or whether this meant enhanced personal practice, and this nuance was not captured in the questions. All respondents were a minimum of Reiki 2 trained with an average gap between Reiki 1 and 2 of 411 days, average time between Reiki 2 and Master level training was 1367 days, and the average gap between Reiki 1 and Master was 1745 days. There was only 1 respondent that undertook all levels of training in a single weekend. 78% of respondents reported another occupation outside of working with Reiki, and there was a wide range of variations that could not be provided in this report but ranged from administrators, to academics, finance directors and complementary therapists. 68.75% of practitioners have met the GCSE level or equivalent vocational level of education. 37.5% of respondents held an undergraduate degree (BA or BSc). A small number of our members (5.4%) hold doctorates (PhD) though subject or title of thesis was not collected. This article continues on page 20.

REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - SPRING 2022
Reiki Journey, Teaching and Impact Survey by Dr. Duncan Cross
...continued from page 19
Part Two – Educational Journey Of the 78 respondents, 60 had learnt only one style of Reiki (Usui Shiki Ryoho), with 72 reporting that Usui Shiki Ryoho was their primary style of Reiki. For Reiki 1, 37% had four attunements with 26% reporting 1 attunement, for Reiki 2, 45% had one attunement with 26% reporting two attunements, and for Master level only 48 participants responded with 69% of those participants reporting one attunement. It was unclear whether attunements were repeated for practitioner and teacher level and this was a design flaw in the survey. Adherence to the Reiki core curriculum across all levels was not strong with Reiki 1 and 2 having 5 of the topics each taught consistently over 90% in courses. For the Master level there was generally higher compliance with the core curriculum but consistency of topics taught did not go above 90%. Anatomy and Physiology, and Red Flag symptoms were the least taught topics across all levels. It should be noted that the data for this section could be compromised as we relied on participants’ memories of what they were taught. Consequently, this may not mean that they do not teach to the core curriculum, but they do not remember being taught these topics. 88% of the respondents learnt 3 symbols at Reiki 2, with 30% of respondents learning 1 symbol for the Master level. 96% reported learning CKR, 97%, SHK, 99% HSZSN, 81% DKM and 47% reported learning other symbols. 96% of respondents were taught about Reiki lineages and 93% were given a copy of their personal lineage. All respondents reported that their training was face to face. 65 participants responded to questions regarding teaching qualifications and professional recognition. This created some confusion as to what was a formal qualification, with a participant believing you only needed a teaching qualification if you taught in a school. 48% of the participants held a teaching qualification recognized against the UK National Qualification Framework (QCF). Six members identified themselves as holding professional recognition in teaching and learning with 1 member holding 5 of the 7 reported recognitions. Other professional recognition related to Reiki was limited with 12 respondents being registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) and 6 with the International Centre for Reiki Training (ICRT).

Part Three – Impact of Reiki on Life 73 participants responded to part three of the survey which consisted of 4 multiple choice questions and an open-ended question. Reiki was reported has having supported mental health (86%) and improved physical health (79%) generally more prevalently than other categories regarding health. In terms of relationships Reiki increased positive interactions (86%), and increased confidence (66%), but also supported practitioners in removing themselves from negative situations (58%). Reiki impacted more generally in life on spirituality (89%) and generally more relaxed (89%). The last multiple-choice question was on spiritual development with 65 (89%) participants reporting that Reiki had made them more spiritual with 20 (27%) reporting Reiki as the basis for their spiritual practice. The word cloud representation (see page 19) of the open question visually represents the positive impact that Reiki has had on people’s lives. Overall participants reported that learning Reiki had had a positive impact on their lives, the data from this research gives an interesting starting point to look at the impact of Reiki on practitioners’ lives and routes into training. The research gives the UK Reiki Federation an insight into current practice and also helps plan for future changes, for example if a standard teaching qualification became a government requirement what support we would need to provide to the membership. We should be cautious about the validity and generalizability of the data as it may well be biased as we collected data through a professional body with engaged practitioners. The survey was long and this may have impacted on the data collection, this data was also collected during the COVID 19 pandemic and participants may well have completed a number of surveys leading to survey fatigue, which could explain the drop off of participants.
How has Reiki impacted on your Health? Reduced alcohol intake Diet Improved blood pressure Increased mobility Supported mental health
We hope to take lessons that we have learnt from this survey and hopefully widen participation beyond the UK Reiki Federation to get a wider picture of Reiki in the UK. We do need you to support our efforts when undertaking research so that we obtain data to provide to scientific and medical communities and we really appreciate your engagement with the research. Moving forward shorter surveys will be presented to the membership so please do look out for shorter themed surveys and the full report after the AGM.

Be-ing Grateful the QiKi Way by Ruthie Moriarty and Alan Sanson
The Reiki Principle we are basing our article on this time is Being Grateful for all that you have. We would like to start with thanking those of you who have shared such positive comments on our previous articles. We offer you all a deep bow of Gratefulness. Being Grateful is a positive daily practice which can be performed in many ways. Writing down a few things for which you are grateful at the beginning or end of each day; calling or writing to someone to say thank you; simply saying thank you. Be-ing Grateful is a two-way street, it is infectious. Think about a time someone genuinely thanked you and
how that made you feel, most times that begins with a smile. For when we are Grateful, negative feelings are eliminated and we are in a state of Grace. In being Grateful for all we have, we continue the cycle of the exchange of positive energies, with love for our world, for each other, for our own amazing uniqueness. Your Inner-Be, (a QiKi Gong term), is a deep inner part of your Be-ing which is always calm and gentle, irrespective of what is going on around you. You can go to your Inner-Be anytime. This inner feeling drives your Inner-QiKi (inner energy) and inner smile. This extends to a real smile and out it goes to others. You can add anything to your Inner-Be.
Let’s add Be-ing Grateful... Now Gratefulness is always there deep inside you – a part of you - consciously and subconsciously. This relates to Reiki at a fundamental level. We discovered a paper by Maria Kuman researching how energy was proven to be enhanced in the Reiki receiver and in the Practitioner during and after a Reiki treatment. It also said that if there was a weak energy spot in the Practitioner then that same area would not be treated in the receiver; and this explains why part of the original teaching of Dr Usui was - balance [all aspects of] yourself first before doing any Reiki healing. As everything is energy – including emotions and feelings - you, as Practitioner, have to open all parts of you to allow the Reiki energies to conduit through to your client. Have calm, gentle, Gratefulness in your Inner-Be and that, through Reiki, will be enhanced in your client. Use Qiki Feelmoves to focus on your Inner-Be, Gratefulness and light-heartedness. Allow these feelings to flow outwards, to an individual, to our beautiful planet, to the Universe. Then gather in fresh positive energies, replenishing your Inner-Be. Maybe share the feelmoves with clients, spreading the ripples of love and of Be-ing Grateful ever wider. Play your way – as always with QiKi feelmoves. A link to Be-ing Grateful the QiKi Way – The Movie is at this end of the article.
1 Sharing QiKi
Be as the Trees - Grateful for our sun, rain and wind for all they provide. Draw the Earth energy up your sides, to your Heart, expand your arms out in front of you to share. Lift the energies up to and above your Star chakra, release out as you lower your arms. 22 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF
2 Offering Out
REIKI AND QIGONG
è
From your Inner-Be, feel your power flow out as you extend your whole body forward, with one foot in front of the other for stability. To enhance your offering, as you expand out, say “Just for You” with a wonderful smile and sincerity.
3 Gathering in
è
Such a glorious feelmove - expand out to your sides filling your aura with beautiful Gratefulness of all that is around you. Filter it through you, invigorating every fibre of your Be-ing, right into your Inner-Be.
4 Fun with QiKi Foam rulers è
No words can describe this – best to watch, join in, Be In-Joy and Be Grateful for what others and you can share.
We are so very Grateful to You and to be part of this loving community.

UKRF Animal Reiki updates by Sue Malcolm
UKRF Animal Reiki team
We’re creating an Animal Reiki team and have two new members, we are also looking also for a Canine Reiki Master Teacher to provide expertise for Canine Reiki developments. Welcome to Laura and Wendy, our two newest UKRF team members: Born in Scotland, Laura began whispering with and healing horses and other animals at a very young age. While searching for a healing modality that would enhance her natural abilities she was guided to learn Reiki and began her Reiki journey in 2001 and moved to England with her partner David McCarthy who is also a Reiki Master Teacher and together they set up a Reiki and Equine Facilitated Learning Centre. Wendy is a Reiki Practitioner and Teacher based around the Nottingham/Derby areas, trained in the Eastern Japanese Style, Laura Barbour & two mustang friends Reiki Ryoho and runs training workshops in Ilkeston (Derbyshire). Wendy has completed Level One Animal Reiki, and is building experience in the treatment of animals too. “I look forward with excitement and joy to the next chapter in my role as a Volunteer for the Animal Reiki Team at UKRF”.
Animal Reiki insurance
Did you know that Reiki insurance does not necessarily cover you for Animal Reiki? To be insured for any therapy you need to be suitably qualified and there is no regulated definition for ‘suitably qualified’ in respect of Animal Reiki which creates uncertainly, and at times confusion, for both Reiki Practitioners and Insurance companies. Insurance companies typically ask/ expect that Animal Reiki training has taken place or the practitioner has suitable expertise for cover to be offered (as an Animal Reiki Practitioner) and student insurance cover is available if Animal Reiki learning is underway but are themselves unclear on what this should include. We will therefore be looking into this matter over the coming weeks/months with the aim of creating clear guidance. Members who offer Reiki to animals other than those of friends and family should be insured and clearly we wish as many members as possible to be insured.
What the small print says
Whether it’s Reiki or Animal Reiki insurance, are you aware that the small print of your cover is likely to say that notes should be written up for each and every ‘treatment’ or ‘session’ for Animal Reiki for insurance to be valid and the notes need to (i) include stipulated information and (ii) be suitably stored. Data Protection applies for Animal Reiki just as it does for Reiki. Please check your policy if unaware of this. Sue Malcolm, UKRF Animal Reiki Coordinator 26 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF

Mindfulness in Nature Modern life is more unconnected from nature than ever. As motorways split up forests and housing estates break apart fields, it can seem difficult to remain mindful of nature when progress is intent on reducing it. However, it doesn’t take a forest for us to practice mindfulness in the environment, it can be as simple as noticing the spring flowers. The Japanese practise of ‘Shinrin-Yoku’ is an act of bathing in the forest itself, absorbing the energy from trees and nature, and giving back your own appreciation and respect. Forest bathing can have wonderful effects on the mind and body, such as relaxation, calmness, restful sleep and more. As somebody who has practiced this without realising, appreciating your natural surroundings gives a feeling of invigoration, as well as a deeper connection to nature. Some ways that I have practiced mindfulness with nature is during my travels to work and university. A cramped bus ride into town may not sound very spiritually charged, however, if you look for the pieces of nature along the journey, you’ll be surprised how much more enjoyable it can be! I find myself tuning out from the noise and noticing every tree that whips past, looking at the leaves, their colour and shape. I notice the grassy verges, the clouds in the sky, birds flying past and flowers in people’s gardens. Being aware of the nature that surrounds you in your daily life is a great way to be more mindful, and to be more thankful of the Earth. Houseplants are another way of being mindful towards nature, as nurturing and caring for a unique plant in your home provides a sense of tranquility, and happiness when your efforts are rewarded with a flourishing plant. Although sometimes temperamental, ferns are beautiful and whimsical plants that remind me of nature’s skill every day. For less experienced plant-carers, a snake plant is a lowmaintenance plant similar to aloe vera that could give your home a touch of the natural environment. Although we may not all have a forest on our doorsteps, everyone can appreciate the pockets of nature scattered around our lives. From inspecting random leaves to nurturing a plant of your own, acknowledging and respecting the natural life on this Earth can be achieved every day, giving us all a greater connection to the environment. Preparing To Give Reiki To Others by Giancarlo Serra
“Everything that exists in the Universe possesses Reiki. Reiki is the Universal energy, the source of all existence, the hado of Love and the pure Light that comes from a higher dimension” - Usui Sensei Reiki has its roots in ancient Buddhism and Shintoism. Many consider that Mikao Usui was the creator of Reiki and that the word Reiki applies only to the healing system that he created and developed. However, research found that prior to Mikao Usui developing his style of Reiki, there were at least four other styles of Reiki healing that were being practiced in Japan (William Lee Rand, Reiki: The Healing Touch). Mikao Usui developed his system of healing in 1922 and called it Usui Reiki Ryoho (Usui Reiki Healing Method). In Japan, the ‘Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai’ founded by Mikao Usui has been teaching his system ever since. Reiki is practiced by millions of people worldwide and there are over one hundred styles that have evolved from the system developed by Mikao Usui. The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council in the United Kingdom defines Reiki as:
...to help others heal you must have the discipline to put in the time and practice to heal yourself.
“Reiki” (ray-key) is Japanese for ‘universal life energy’, a term used to describe a natural system to help bring about an improved sense of wellbeing and a positive feeling of spiritual renewal. This tradition was founded by Dr Mikao Usui in the early 20th century and evolved as a result of his research, experience and dedication. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system and benefits may include deep relaxation and the promotion of a calm peaceful sense of wellbeing.”
Healing and Curing Physical symptoms are the results of something that is happening on a much deeper level. They are the ‘tip of the iceberg’. Western medicine aims at relieving these symptoms, which often brings results. However, western medicine is often concerned with removing the symptoms rather than dealing with the cause. Releasing or eliminating the symptoms often leaves the source of the problem untouched. How medicines work often equates to covering a pot of boiling water with a lid. We all know that the pressure generated will soon be too much to be contained inside the pot. The only way is to turn the gas down, reducing pressure.
28 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF
REIKI WORLD The first difference between healing and curing is that curing is more concerned with physical, emotional, and mental symptoms, while healing focuses on the cause. Healing is not concerned with the symptoms, because as soon as the cause of the illness is understood and healed, the symptoms often (but not always) disappear. Caroline Myss is a world-renowned medical intuitive, author, and speaker in the field of health and healing, writes in her book Anatomy of the Spirit: “Healing begins with the repair of emotional injuries. Healing is an active and internal process that includes investigating one’s attitudes, memories, and beliefs with the desire to release all negative patterns that prevent one’s full emotional and spiritual recovery.”
How to prepare for a Reiki Session There are many ways to prepare for a session and I would certainly encourage you to find your way. Here is a list of ideas to take into consideration based on my own experience and training received. It is important to know how you can best prepare for a Reiki session so that you are grounded, centered and your client can receive the most benefits. This preparation involves your own preparation as well the preparation of the space where you are going to have the Reiki treatment. Give yourself at least 30 minutes prior to the session to sit, meditate, give yourself healing and prepare the room. If you are the beginning of your working day and you are getting ready for your first Reiki treatment, you probably need more time, perhaps one hour or even more. In between sessions you still need time to make notes in relation to your previous session, to clear your energy and the energy of the space, and to prepare for your next client.
Give Yourself Reiki Healing Takata Sensei always taught her students to start their healing practice with themselves, providing Reiki self-treatments daily. Before you can help others to heal, you must first heal yourself. Even if you only have five minutes per day, use that time to place your hands on yourself and allow the Reiki energy to flow. This will not only help you master the skills needed for Reiki, but it will help to keep your energy flowing freely and improve the health of your body, mind, and spirit. Whenever possible, perform a full Reiki self-treatment, which includes 16 hand positions. Hold each hand position for three to five minutes. Therefore Reiki is a discipline – because to help others heal you must have the discipline to put in the time and practice to heal yourself.

Create the right atmosphere Creating the right atmosphere in which to give Reiki does help to enhance the experience. Ideally, when you are giving someone else a Reiki treatment you should have a quiet, comfortable and soothing environment in a designated room or area and find somewhere you will not be disturbed. You might want to make the experience special by having a candle burning there, and playing appropriate music to suit the mood. Some people like to burn incense or use essential oils, but it’s probably best to make sure that your client actually likes the smell of the fragrance before you fill the room with it. Using a space clearing spray before a Reiki treatment is also recommended and it’s a good, easy way to improve the energetic quality of the space in which you are working.
Make sure you are comfortable It’s a good idea that both the Reiki practitioner and the recipient should wear comfortable loose clothing, take off their shoes, their watches and remove any jewellery that might inhibit the free flow of energy. If the receiver wears glasses, ask them to remove them before the treatment. Hygiene is also important, especially if you are treating someone you do not know. Always wash your hands before and after a Reiki treatment. Try and keep your breath fresh, so maybe suck a mint or clean your teeth beforehand, especially if you have been eating spicy or garlic laden foods, or are a smoker.
Reiki treatments Treatments can be given with the recipient either sitting in a chair or lying down on the floor, a mattress, a futon or even a treatment couch. Make sure they are comfortable by placing pillows under the head of the recipient and also under the knees if they find this a comfortable way to relax their legs. Some people may want a blanket as there are often variations in body temperature when receiving Reiki. It is also very important for you as the practitioner to be comfortable as well. Pay particular attention to your posture. If you end up giving a few treatments a day and are not taking care of your spine, then you will notice it very quickly. For the treatment itself you should take a few moments to prepare yourself energetically and mentally. You might wish to spend a few minutes doing the shower of light technique (details of this technique will follow in a future article). Alternatively you can simply carry out another simple grounding exercise by imagining your feet firmly rooted to the floor and feeling your connection with the planet (it doesn’t matter if you live on the fifth floor of a block of flats as energy follows thought). Then imagine a beam of light extending from your heart chakra down your spine, out of your body and all the way down into the Earth, going all the way down into the very centre of Mother Earth. Feel or imagine that energy anchoring down in the centre of the Earth and bring it all the way back up into your heart chakra and feel the grounding energy coming up into your body.
30 REIKI WORLD MAGAZINE - UKRF
REIKI WORLD
Imagine or see a beam of light extending from your heart chakra up your spine and out the top of your crown chakra, up through the ceiling, up through the rest of the building and then out through the sky and the Earth’s atmosphere and out into the Universe.
Connect and ground Intend to connect with the Highest Source of Reiki, feel or imagine and then intend the connection and allow the Reiki energy to come back down your beam of light and into your heart chakra and allow it to mix with the grounding energy. You might like to say a prayer and/or call upon the assistance of Dr. Usui, Dr. Hayashi, Hawayo Takata and other high level Reiki guides to help making this treatment a success for the receiver’s highest good. Then, feeling grounded, protected and connected with Reiki you can begin the treatment by brushing down the receiver’s aura from the head to the feet two or three times. Whilst doing this keep your fingers together to keep the energy focussed and intend to clean the recipient’s aura. Proceed with giving them Reiki. Whether you use Reiki in a hands-on or hands-off method is a matter for your discernment and you and your client to discuss. You can either touch the receiver lightly or hold your hands a few inches above their body, staying in each position for between one and five minutes. At first, you might find some of the hand positions a little tiring, so you can start off with a shorter amount of time if you need to and progress upwards. Both the recipient and the practitioner should keep their legs and arms uncrossed to ensure the free flow of the energy and the practitioner’s feet should always be connected to the ground. During the treatment, no conscious effort must be made. You have already intended that the treatment is for the recipient’s highest good and just maintain this intention throughout the treatment. You can also “tune in” to the recipient if you like and notice what you notice, but always without judgement. If your mind wanders off, just gently bring it back to your present experience of the flow of Reiki. Giancarlo Serra UKRF Member, Master Teacher www.giancarloserra.org
