Trailblazers Meet the People who Shaped Tubac

Inhabited for over 10,000 years, Tubac has been home to many different cultures: prehistoric hunter-gatherers; Hohokam and their descendents the Pima and O’odham; Apache cultures; Spanish explorers and clergy; miners; Mexican ranchers; Mormon farmers; and American settlers. In the last 325 years, five separate flags have flown over Tubac: Spain, Mexico, United States of America, Confederate States of America, and State of Arizona. Although all who attempted to make a living in Tubac were pioneers, a few great leaders stand out in Tubac’s history as those who melded the town into what it is today. We call these folks the Tubac Trailblazers. Fat he r Ki n o

Luis Oacpicagugua

In 1687, Jesuit priest Eusebio Francisco Kino came to the region that is now Sonora, Mexico to establish a Catholic church in the area. He arrived in the Santa Cruz valley in 1690s. Unlike many of his Spanish contemporaries, Kino fervently opposed forced labor by the Sonoran people in the Spanish silver mines. Instead, Kino believed that he could improve the lives of the native people in the region both economically and spiritually by establishing farms, rancherias, and missions.

Despite Father Kino’s kindness, most colonial Spanish leaders were cruel: forced labor was the norm for five decades. In 1751, Pima leader Luis Oacpicagugua rallied a rebellion against the colonial Europeans, mainly by promising plunder seized from Spanish rubble. B Y A . S T EE B Y The uprising was brutal: Most of the Spanish settlements around Tubac were razed. Despite Oacpicagugua’s early successes, the Spanish managed to regain control when their troops defeated a 2,000-man band of Pima warriors.

Captain Juan Bautista de An z a II One of the most famous former residents of Tubac, Juan Bautista de Anza II’s main claim to fame was his trailblazing efforts to establish a route to link the Sonoran Desert to the California coast—a path Spanish explorers had been coveting for over 200 years. Anza joined the Spanish army at 16 and rapidly ascended the ranks to become a captain in 1760. From 1760 to 1776, he was stationed in Tubac. In 1774, he was ordered by his superiors to uncover a route through the desert to California. He assembled a massive expedition of 245 people, 302 head of cattle, 340 horses, and 165 mules at Horcasitas in 1775. The party reached Tubac in October of 1775, their last stop before the great desert. After a treacherous journey and a challenging winter, the party finally arrived at the California Coast. In February of 1776, the party trekked north to what is now Monterrey, California. Although Anza left Monterrey to return to Tubac, the remaining colonists continued traveling and went on to found San Francisco.

C h a r l e s Poston Tubac declined throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries, due to the lack of a consistent ruling nation. In the late 1700’s, Spanish rule became weak and supplies became scarce. The Mexican Revolution eventually ousted Spain’s control of the region in 1821 after bloody fighting. The period from 1821 to 1853 was tumultuous, with economic hardship, aggressive Apache raids on settlers, the Mexican-American War (1846-48), and outbreaks of disease. Only after the United States’ Gadsden Purchase in 1853, did the Tubac region become US land, in the form of the New Mexico Territory. Even with this transfer, Tubac was essentially a ghost town: its remaining inhabitants were wooed away by the promise of gold in California. Tubac was fairing badly in 1856, when Charles Poston blazed into town. Another pioneer, he is often referred to by historians as “The Father of Arizona” for his lobbying to create the Arizona Territory. Before his political days, he was a mining man, looking to find the next big rush. In 1856, Charles Poston and others formed the Sonora Exploring and Mining Company. Unafraid of Tubac’s hazardous and battle-torn past, he traveled to Tubac and refurbished the headquarters of the abandoned Spanish military colony. Thanks to Poston’s efforts, Tubac saw a rebirth. The transformed village grew to a population of 1,000 and saw the development of local businesses. Unfortunately for Poston, his success was short-lived. The Civil War in 1861 made his investment worthless.

T. L illie M ercer and Sabin o Otero Modern-day Tubac was established in 1882 in large part due to the efforts of T. Lillie Mercer and Sabino Otero. They organized the town, built the first school in what became Arizona in 1885, and established the Tubac Scouts in 1886. The Scouts were formed mainly to combat the Apaches, who surrendered in September of that year. Their defeat ushered in the current age of peace that Tubac has experienced. Mercer and Otero helped bring education to Tubac, eventually allowing it to grow into what it is today.

Dale Nichols Although Tubac is naturally beautiful, it has not always been a center for the arts. All that changed with the arrival of Dale Nichols. His establishing of the Arts School put Tubac on the map for its art. The first Tubac Festival of the Arts took place in 1960, with great success; the Tubac Center of the Arts opened in 1972. His efforts helped to make Tubac the renowned art hub that it is today, home to hundreds of artists and galleries.

We remember their names, grateful for their contributions as Tubac continues to thrive in the 21st century. Outdoor sy Week end Do you and your sweetheart prefer to share your quality time in the great outdoors? Then lace up your walking shoes and grab your floppy hat. Tubac’s location in the high desert of the Santa Cruz river valley means that back-to-nature opportunities are plentiful. For hikers, don’t miss the Anza Trail, a 3.2 mile desert riparian hike between the Tubac Presidio State Park and the Tumacacori National Historical Park. Nearby Madera Canyon also has birding, hiking trails and camping. While outside, you can commune with our feathered friends.
