Alive with History Experts believe that the Tubac region has been inhabited continuously for over 10,000 years. Prehistoric hunter-gatherers; Pima, O’odham, and Apache cultures; Spanish explorers and clergy; Mexican ranchers; Mormon farmers; and American settlers have all made Tubac their home. In recent centuries, the Tubac area has been governed by four different countries. This amalgam of cultures continues today, resulting in a town that is both steeped in history and forward-looking. OR I GI N S The name “Tubac” likely stems from the Pima Indian words tu, meaning “black”, and ba’a, meaning “pool of water”. Another possible derivation comes from the Pima word tuva meaning “low place”, a fitting name for this river valley region. Eleven thousand years ago, Tubac was populated by prehistoric hunters that thrived in the then-forested ecosystem. The prehistoric Hohokam peoples inhabited the area between 300 and 1500 AD, and are believed to be the ancestors of the Pima and O’odham people that still live near Tubac today.

S PA N I S H COLONI AL PE RI OD, 1691-1821 In 1691, Jesuit priest Francisco Kino arrived in the Santa Cruz valley, intent on converting the indigenous people to Catholicism. Father Kino built farms, rancherias, and missions to sustain the Indians both economically and

spiritually. For the next half-century missionary work thrived, with the missions functioning as both spiritual centers and industrial complexes. Cattle ranching, food preparation, and construction operations were all under the purview of the church. Although the Spanish believed their works were for the good of the indigenous cultures, many native people had a different perspective. Fueled by five decades of Spanish occupation, the Pima Indians rebelled against the Spanish in 1751. Many lives were lost and all the Tubac area settlements were destroyed during the uprising. In 1752, the Spanish managed to gain the upper hand when Spanish troops defeated a 2,000-man band of Pima warriors. To quell any further uprising, the Spanish Viceroy established the BY A . ST E E BY Presidio of San Ignacio de Tubac. This presidio was the first permanent European settlement in what is now the state of Arizona. Encouraged by the cessation of hostilities, colonists returned to the area to farm and seek work constructing the presidio. Unfortunately, peril plagued the new settlers. The Apache, who were relative newcomers to the Tubac area themselves, raided the colonists mercilessly. When the presidio at Tubac was moved to Tucson in 1776, residents of the region were left completely unprotected against Apache aggression. Eventually, the ravages of the Apache drove out the remaining farmers, leaving Tubac a ghost town. The presidio was revived by the Spanish in 1787 and renamed San Raphael de Tubac.

Once Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, Tubac came under Mexican rule. During this time, presidios in the region were strapped economically and they instituted rationing of goods. Apaches that had been living peacefully resumed raiding when the rationing made supplies scarce. These attacks caused over 5,000 settler deaths during the 15-year period of turbulence. Apache violence and economic challenges notwithstanding, the Tubac fort garrison’s minimal protection was inducement enough for farmers to stay in the area and eke out a living. The 15-year period of 1833-1848 was arduous for Tubac residents by any measure. In addition to the relentless Apache raids, inhabitants of the region were plagued by virulent outbreaks of smallpox, measles, and cholera. 1848 served as the death knell for the tiny Tubac community. After the United States-Mexican War ended in that year, troops providing protection to the settlers were removed by the Mexican government. Once the California Gold Rush began some months later, the last colonists left as well. Tubac was once again completely abandoned, although thousands of travelers passed through the area on their way to California. Mexico established a military colony in the region in 1851. The colony’s commander convinced Mormon pioneers to irrigate and farm the unused riverbank land, but the Mormon crops ultimately failed and the farmers moved on.

The United States’ Gadsden Purchase in 1853 brought the Tubac region under U.S. possession, where it was considered part of the New Mexico Territory. In 1856, the Sonora Exploring and Mining Company was formed in the area and an agent for the company, Charles Poston, refurbished the headquarters of the abandoned military colony. The village quickly grew to over 1,000 people and businesses, a newspaper, and stage services sprang up.

These buildings are still in business today. The far adobe “Brunel House” was built in 1913, while the closer adobe “were built in 1910.

The third church to occupy this site was build in 1920. Local tradition says that three ladies named “Ann” raised funds for the new church and the name “St. Ann’s” was chosen in their honor. Masses are still held there.

C IVI L WA R PE RI OD, 18 61-18 63 Federal troops that had been stationed in the Tubac area were reassigned once the Civil War fighting began. The lack of a military presence again left the settlement vulnerable to opportunistic Apache raids. In August, 1861, the Confederate States of America seized the region, but the fragile government lost possession of the territory several months later.

Enterprising souls, such as rancher Sabino Otero, established the official site of the town of Tubac in 1882. Arizona was officially admitted to the union as the 48th state on February 14, 1912. Homesteaders who had been granted land during the Arizona Territorial period were evicted from their homes during a land dispute. The displaced homesteaders relocated from what is now considered Tubac’s Historic District. A new chapter in Tubac’s history began in 1948, when artist Dale Nichols opened the Tubac School of Art. Twelve years later, the annual Tubac Festival of the Arts began, further cementing the

area’s reputation as an important art center. The Tubac Center of the Arts opened in the early 1970s. Today, visitors and residents alike enjoy the village’s many attractions, including golfing, birding, hiking, and of course, the arts.

HISTORY F OR F UTUR E GEN ER ATIONS

Despite the trappings of modern life in Tubac, the area’s rich tapestry of history remains alive and well. Much of the credit for preserving these memories goes to the Tubac Historical Society. The Society’s passionate volunteers work to preserve the knowledge of Tubac’s remarkable history. They maintain an extensive library and provide a heritage center and gift shop for the public.

The Tubac Presidio was established in 1752 and was the first European settlement in what is now Arizona. The Tubac Presidio State Historic Park is located on the original site and features preserved structures and a museum. A living history group, Los Tubaqueños, performs each Sunday afternoon October through April. Other historical areas nearby include the Tumacacori National Historical Park and the remains of Forts Buchanan and Crittenden.
