Tempe Local Favorites Light Rail Destinations

METRO light rail provides a convenient way to travel through Tempe and access downtown Phoenix and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. METRO light rail and local buses share the same fare structure. So, a pass purchased for light rail can also be used for a bus. One ride is $2.00 and an all-day pass is $4.00. Multiple day passes are also available. More details about how to plan your trip, fare options and schedules can be found at the Valley Metro website: www.valleymetro.org. Bicycles are welcome on board. Here are a few ideas of what you can explore from several of Tempe’s light rail stops.

Mill Ave./Third St. Station: Mill Avenue District (Mill A Avenue and adjacent streets between Tempe Town Lake and University Drive; 480) 355-6060; www.millavenue.com) The Mill Avenue District is a pedestrian-friendly historic downtown, with more than 100 shops, restaurants, taverns, hotels and activities. Once on Mill Avenue, you’re steps away from Tempe Town Lake, a hike up “A” Mountain and the Arizona State University Tempe Campus.

Tempe Town Lake is the perfect place to walk, jog, ride a bike or just relax. More than five miles of pathways surround the lake. the water by renting a kayak, hydrobike, paddleboard or boat from Tempe Boat Rentals. Tempe Beach Park is also home to many annual festivals and events. “A” Mountain (Third St. and Mill Ave.; (480) 350-4311; www.tempe.gov/amountain) Located across the street from the light rail stop, look for the trailhead near the surface parking lot and light rail tracks. “A” Mountain is a popular spot for a quick, scenic urban hike. The gold “A” stands for Arizona State University. While on the trails, look for petroglyphs (rock art images) created by the Hohokam, prehistoric inhabitants of this area. Flour Mill (SE corner E Hayden of Mill Ave. and Rio Salado Pkwy.; (480) 350-4311; www.tempemill. com) The Hayden Flour Mill is one of Tempe’s oldest buildings. The Mill ceased operations in 1998 but visitors can now walk the grounds and see historic photos of the mill and Tempe, view equipment or attend an event. Veterans Way/College Ave. Station (at the Tempe Transportation Center): Devil Stadium (500 E.
