esa started out as a small farming community settled by Mormon pioneers in the late 1800s. Little did they know that Mesa would fast become an urban nerve center for the Phoenix metropolitan area. Fast forward 120 years, and you’ll see Mesa has grown at break-neck speed and is now the third largest city in the state of Arizona (boasting a population greater than such well-known cities as Atlanta, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Pittsburgh and Miami). The original townsite of dirt streets and family settlements, a one square mile of land in the heart of the city, is now aligned with shops, restaurants and museums and supports nearly 500 businesses. This

vibrant epi-center is also the home of Mesa Arts Center. Like the visionary leaders of the past, Mesa’s residents made history when they built the largest arts facility of its kind in the Southwest. Completed in 2005, the seven-acre complex is home to professional performing arts, visual arts and arts education. The architectural masterpiece and central gathering place was inspired by and reflects the unique character of Arizona’s famous landscapes, a rich mountain, desert and canyon environment. The future is a bright one for tourism, with many more offerings and developments on the city docket over the next decade. Most recently, the expansion of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has helped the city serve as a dynamic reliever destination to Phoenix’s Sky Harbor
International Airport. Now serving almost 20 cities throughout the country with direct, non-stop service via Allegiant Air, the airport serves as a gateway to several East Valley communities including Gilbert, Gila River Indian Community, Queen Creek and neighboring Apache Junction. The 5,000 acres surrounding the facility are already being tapped for tourism, retail and business development. In 2008, Gaylord Hotels selected Mesa as the site for their next destination resort and convention center. In years to come, the development will spur a new urban core in the Southeast Valley at Mesa Proving Grounds, the largest remaining parcel of contiguous land within the Mesa planning area at 3,200 acres. What is “Mesa” doing?

A Numbers Guide to Mesa Mesa takes its name from the Spanish word meaning “table”, a term used to reference land above the bluff. The first known settlement in the Mesa area was about 2,000 years ago by an Indian civilization now called the Hohokam (meaning those who are gone). Long-term residents did not arrive until 1877 as Mormon pioneers settled just below the “mesa” next to the Salt River. In 1878 a second group of pioneers arrived settling upon the “mesa”. The pioneers excavated the ancient Hohokam canals, again bringing irrigation and ensuring the rebirth of a community.

Neighboring Communities
Although only incorporated in 1978, Apache Junction has a long and colorful past reaching back to every element of the American Southwest: ancient Indian cultures, Spanish explorers, the lure of rich gold mines, and open range for the western cattlemen. Add in the local legend of the Lost Dutchman Mine and the deadly hide & seek between the U.S. Military and the indigenous Apache bands, and you have a place that vibrates with history. Within the shadow of the Superstition Mountains and just east of Mesa lies Apache Junction – the trailhead to adventure along the Historic Apache Trail (Hwy. 88). Considered by many as one of the most scenic drives in all the Southwest, Apache Trail takes visitors through canyons of dizzying heights, azure blue lakes, Goldfield Ghost Town and the old stagecoach station of Tortilla Flat before reaching the majestic Roosevelt Dam. Magnificent recreation and leisure activities are everywhere along the way. There is fishing, skiing and boating on Canyon and Apache Lakes as well as hiking and trail rides through the Lost Dutchman State Park or on the Peralta Trailhead.

ven though Mesa boasts a population of more than 460,000 and offers all the benefits of a large city, visitors can take advantage of being close to a recreation paradise as Mesa is neighbor to the vast Tonto National Forest. Tonto is the fifth largest forest in the country and one of the mostvisited “urban” forests in the U.S. There are three lakes and two rivers just outside of Mesa that allow for desert boating, rafting, kayaking and water skiing. who trained in Phoenix. A year later spring training got an additional boost when civic and government leaders convinced more Major League teams to train here. In 1952, Dwight Patterson and members of the newly formed Mesa Hohokams led negotiations as the Chicago Cubs and the City of Mesa signed a multi-year agreement. Other teams soon followed with the Cactus League now serving 15 teams in Arizona. At Pro’s Ranch Market, visitors can immerse themselves in the flavors of Old Mexico, as well as Central and South America,

Apache Trail: A Place Full of Legends and Lore the Valley. As you pass the mysterious Superstition Mountains and head into the foothills of the Tonto National Forest – the fifth largest forest in the United States, the area continues to pay homage to its Western roots which took shape in the late 1800s. Sonoran Desert Secrets • The Sonoran Desert is located in two states, Arizona and California, and two countries, Mexico and the United States. • The Sonoran Desert boasts the richest diversity of plants and animals of all the world’s deserts - well over 3,000 different plant species. This diversity provides habitat for an even greater richness in animal life including more than 500 species of birds that migrate and nest through the region, as well as more than 550 species of fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. • More rain falls on the Sonoran Desert than any other desert on earth. • The saguaro is the largest cactus in the United States and can only be found in the Sonoran Desert. It takes 50 years before the plant blossoms with the beautiful state flower of Arizona and approximately 75 years before appendages (arms) sprout. • With the right growing conditions, it is estimated that saguaros can live to be as much as 150-200 years old. They can grow to be between 40-60 feet tall and when fully hydrated weigh between 3,200-4,800 pounds.

ecognized by the Arizona Office of Tourism as one of the most scenic byways in the state, the historic Apache Trail, just east of Mesa, was built more than 100 years ago serving as a main access way to the Roosevelt Dam construction site. Named for the crews of Apache Native-Americans who helped pave this treacherous path, the Apache Trail was completed in 1905 at a cost of more than one-half million dollars. Even though Mesa is in the heart of a desert, visitors can take advantage of the city’s close proximity to a water recreation paradise – the Tonto National Forest. There are three lakes and two rivers within 30 minutes of Mesa that allow for desert boating, rafting, kayaking and water skiing. Or, partake in the ever-popular activity of “tubing”, a leisurely float along the cool waters of the Salt River via inner-tube. Popular are tours of Canyon Lake to the east with more than 28 miles of cactus-dotted shoreline. Guests can cruise the lake’s secluded inner waterways with Dolly Steamboat and photograph desert bighorn sheep and other wildlife. To the north, visitors can also hit the water at
Saguaro Lake. Campgrounds and Butcher Jones Beach make the area ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Or, take a more scenic route on a Desert Belle paddleboat cruise. The lower Salt River is a birder’s paradise with scenic offshoots like Coon Bluff that promise solitude. Flyfishers here appreciate the calm, cool waters stocked with rainbow trout. The river is also the place where guests can frolic and have fun aboard a Desert Voyagers guided raft or kayak tour while getting an indepth guide to the area’s history. No matter how you explore the many waterways east of Mesa, guests are guaranteed numerous (and memorable) ways to cool off in Mother Nature’s playground.

Before You Go Tips for the Trail…
Before heading out to explore the vast Sonoran Desert, take caution. While the desert offers breathtaking scenery, it can also be unfamiliar territory for out-of-town guests not acclimated to the varied temperatures and rugged terrain. Below is a list of tips before hitting the trail. pack water. Avoid dehydration by Never stray from the designated trail. Desert 1 Always drinking water often throughout your hike. A 5 terrain is rugged and unpredictable. Most good rule of thumb is to pack one gallon of water for a full-day of desert exploring. Dress appropriately. Desert temperatures can hit extreme highs and extreme lows in a 24-hour period. Wearing layers helps slow dehydration and limits your sun exposure. Always wear closed-toe shoes. Wearing a hat and sunglasses are also recommended. Apply sunscreen – often. Even in the winter months, Arizona’s direct sunlight can cause severe burns. Hike with a friend or in a group. If heading out solo, let someone else know of your plans or alert the ranger where you plan to hike.

Be mindful of their surroundings and treat them with caution and respect. It is very common to pick up cactus needles during your hike.
