A

cross the U.S. tiny homes are making a big impression. Fun designs and personal flair make these houses desirable, and some owners also enjoy the freedom of mobility. But for most, tiny homes are an affordable alternative to owning a traditional home. Despite their growing popularity, many tiny home owners struggle to find a place to park their abode. That’s why Durango resident Bob Lieb is developing Tiny homes are Escalante Village north of Escalante Middle School at 224 Baker Lane for owners to park an affordable their tiny homes. “We’ve had this piece of property for sometime, alternative but didn’t exactly know what type of development to owning a to do on it,” Lieb said. “Developing this traditional home. community in the city gives someone a place to put their tiny home. If you go to the rural setting, there is a lot of infrastructure you might need that just isn’t there, like electricity, water, sewer and road access.” The current plan for Escalante Village has 24 lots for homes, a community garden and recreation space. Each lot will have access to water, sewer, trash and internet services.

[ 12 ]

The community is located near the river along the Animas River Trail, with easy access to the shopping center near Walmart. As an advocate for affordable housing, Lieb hopes this development helps more people reach their dream of homeownership. “One of the aspects of tiny homes is their affordability,” Lieb said. “If someone is going to own something that is relative to a place to live, this is the least expensive option that gives someone the basics of a good home and shelter.” Though there is still some work to do, Lieb hopes that residents will be able to park their tiny homes at Escalante Village by the end of the year. Learn more about Escalante Village online at escalantevillage.com or stop by their outdoor booth at the Home & Ranch Show to tour four tiny homes.
